I am Ashley - Your Reading Tutor - and my experience as an online tutor, classroom teacher, and the mother of a reluctant reader, has allowed me to bring a fun and effective approach to building stronger and more confident readers. I created The Reading Project after working with dozens of families in my business that needed support in helping their readers at home. In this episode, I'm joined by Mindy VanZuiden, an educator and tutor who places the importance of rapport with students at the top, knowing if the relationship is in place everything else can then fall in line. Mindy is passionate about learning and encourages her students to not only learn to succeed in the academic world but she teaches them important life skills as well.
Mindy knew that she wanted to become a teacher so that she might have the opportunity to change the course of a child’s life by helping them reach their full potential.
Mindy taught in the public school system for over 15 years. Her Undergraduate degree is in K-12 Physical Education, her Master’s Degree is in Education Leadership, and Mindy is a Certified Dyslexia Specialist through the University of Florida. Mindy has taught in Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa.

In this episode, I'm joined by Melquea Smith, a Black, Queer, multi-award-winning children’s book illustrator based in New York, for a discussion about filling your home library with black books!
Melquea is an active member of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and a committee member of #BlackCreatorsHeadquarters.
Certified kid at heart, she provides positive and joyful imagery of Black kids and Black families through her art and children’s books. She specializes in illustrating little Black girls of all shapes, colors, and sizes.
When not illustrating, you’ll find Melquea watching the newest animated shows and movies, learning all about Japan, studying Spanish with her cat Kilala, and giving her other cat Bumblebee pit-pats on her super fluffy tummy.

In this episode, I'm joined by Heather O’Donnell for a conversation about writing skills that will help your kids and students improve their comprehension.
Heather O’Donnell MS.Ed and Ed.M began her career as a classroom teacher. Working in both special and general education classroom settings, she left the classroom in 2018 to open New Paltz Multisensory, an online and in-person tutoring practice in New Paltz, NY. After identifying a need for private multisensory reading instruction in her community, the practice has grown to include a team of 13 tutors providing online and in-person multisensory reading, writing, and math instruction to students in over 10 states.
Heather uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to diagnostically provide explicit instruction so that kids learn to love learning again!

In this episode, I'm happy to share a conversation with Lisa Parnello.
Lisa is a dyslexia expert with over 15 years of experience including public schools, and private schools, with a primary focus on students with learning differences such as dyslexia, and dysgraphia. She started her career teaching general education students and discovered her heart was set on helping the children who struggled the most.
She earned her M.Ed. in special education and has since dedicated her life to helping the most struggling learners. She is a certified Wilson Dyslexia Therapist and a Wilson Credentialed Trainer. Lisa served as the Lower School Director of Sand Hill School at CHC in Palo Alto before expanding Parnello Education Services.

It was created to give both kids and caregivers a tool to discover awesome content. Storitopia's goal is to create a community where stories are shared, discovery and learning are encouraged, and storytelling is used as a way for kids to make connections, create togetherness, and foster empathy and understanding.
Merideth left the traditional workforce pre-pandemic. She always dreamed of building her own business with an impact that she could be proud of. So, she designed and created the Storitopia app. This has been a huge project for her and she is incredibly proud of the work she has done!

Let me introduce you to Laurie Molnar. Laurie is a certified Level OG (Orton-Gillingham) practitioner with over 35 years of experience teaching students in public, private, and homeschool settings. She is also a learning disability and dyslexia specialist.

In this episode, I'm joined by Josh Mann. Josh is very passionate about helping students succeed. He has a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in writing and also studied at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and Oxford University. He has extensive experience tutoring and teaching at many private schools and homeschooling organizations in the Los Angeles area.

He also specializes in helping students who have learning disabilities and behavior challenges, such as Dyslexia, Autism, ADD, and Asperger's syndrome.
Josh incorporates life coaching skills into his process of working with students, in order to assist with organization, scheduling, executive functioning, time management, social skill improvement, and motivation.
In this episode, we discuss whether or not children with learning differences should take a break in the summer or keep tutoring. We also discuss what parents should look for in a tutor for their child and what tutors should know about working with learning disabled children.

It's that time of year - back to school! Let me ask you a question... do you know if your child is learning structured literacy or whole language in their classroom this year?

I'm so excited for you to meet Dr. Terica Butler. She is a former teacher and believes literacy is a tool to build student identity and ignite in them curiosity about themselves and the world around them.
She spent most of her career supporting literacy initiatives in large urban school districts before creating her business, Apex Education Consulting Solutions, LLC, in 2018. She started her company to meet the professional learning needs of teachers and leaders. Then she decided to add a student solution service during the pandemic. And here we are two years later, she has refined the model into virtual literacy learning pods for grades 3-5.

Today, we have Kristin Dwyer on the podcast, from Brain Friendly Reading! Her literacy background is simply amazing and she's using it to create products, resources, and trainings that she putting into the hands of educators, homeschoolers, and parents everywhere.
Kristin combined her background in Montessori and Orton-Gillingham to create a new approach to teaching reading - a unique sequence of instructional strategies. This new approach has already achieved tremendous success for students from kindergarten through middle school. Today we're interviewing Meagan Beam. Megan has a love and a passion for teaching literacy with a multi-sensory approach. And I'm not kidding when I say passion, you're gonna hear it in her voice!
Meagan majored in Special Education at Clemson University and has a Master's Degree in reading with an elementary focus from Grand Canyon University. She also has two certifications in Orton-Gillingham through the Orton-Gillingham Academy.
Out of her passion for phonics and creating she's crafted and patented an engaging phonics tool called Phonics Builders to support teachers in their instruction and students in their learning.
She loves sharing her passion for literacy with other teachers and caregivers in hopes that it makes a difference for that one student who desperately needs that phonics instruction intervention.

In this episode, I have a really special guest, my friend Amanda! She joins us to speak about Speech and Language Pathology.
Amanda is a mother of two kids, ages six and nine. She is also a licensed speech and language pathologist living in the Burlington, Vermont area. Amanda and I first met and I got to know her because we are both writers at Vermont Mom. It's always a fun time to have someone I actually know in real life come on as a guest!
Professionally, Amanda spent seven years working with children from birth right on through 12th grade as a speech and language pathologist, both in schools and in home-health before she had her second child. While she still loves and takes every opportunity to grow her knowledge in all things speech and language, she's changed career courses so that she can focus more on being a mom.
She's currently beginning her fourth year working at her daughter's elementary school. which serves students in preschool through 3rd grade. There she applies her professional knowledge in her role as a substitute teacher, three or more days a week. That school is so lucky to have such an amazing substitute teacher on its roster!

Growing up, I always went to the library. My grandmother even worked at our little library in town. I remember getting off the school bus or walking to the library after school and getting my homework done, checking out new books, or just hanging out. The library was definitely a big part of my life growing up! I love that now I get to share that love of the library with my students and my own children.
November is Family Literacy Month, so it seemed like the perfect time to do an episode about the library. And November 7, is picture book day, so it's a great time to head to the library as a family and check out some picture books. Michelle is passionate about teaching others how to teach a structured literacy lesson online with limited technology and engaging students through independent, online activities that involve movement and games. Michelle was teaching online for over a year before the pandemic and during the pandemic, she supported the transition to online teaching with free resources and webinars for educators.

If you've got middle and/or high school-aged kids, this episode is for you!
Let me introduce you to Christine Ducz. Christine has taught in public and charter schools as a middle school English teacher for five years and has spent time as a literacy coach in a K-8 school district.
After she had her daughter in 2016, she transitioned to a virtual educator working with students in grades 6-12 and serving as a reading specialist for students with learning differences. And later in 2019, Christina launched her own online tutoring business serving students in grades 6-12. She tutors students who need support with reading, writing, and home-based learning.
She also has a literacy blog with resources for parents and teachers, along with book reviews. In 2019, she launched two monthly membership programs, Little Reading Coach Academy School of Literacy for students in grades 4-8, and an educator series for teachers working with students in grades 4 through 8.
I'm super excited to interview Christine in this episode. We talk more about her membership program and how she supports parents/caregivers and educators with students in middle/high school grades. She has so many great ideas and so much passion for reading aloud!

In this episode, we have a great interview with Heather O'Donnell from New Paltz Multisensory and we're talking about writing and dysgraphia. Heather was determined to find a way to provide instruction and intervention rooted in the science of how the brain works. She feels strongly that kids struggling with academic skills need this kind of support, so she opened her own practice. New Paltz Multisensory has grown to now include a talented staff to reach even more students.
Heather is a certified dyslexia practitioner through the Wilson Reading Program, as well as structured literacy, dyslexia interventionists certified by the Center of Effective Reading Instruction. She's passionate about reading and writing instruction and loves watching kids develop confidence in these important literacy skills when given the right instruction.

It's August so many of us are getting into the Back-to-School groove. One thing that comes along with back-to-school is homework. In today's episode, I'm joined by Elizabeth Keenan of Keenan Education Consulting and we're talking all about homework. We'll cover how Elizabeth supports families with homework, setting up a great homework space for your kids, routines, and what to do if homework isn't going so well in your home.
Elizabeth is a good friend of mine and a former neighbor! She's been in the classroom as a student or a teacher for the past 30 years. She's worked as a professional educator for 12 of those years and her experience has ranged from teaching kindergarten students through seniors in high school. She has worked in a Therapeutic Day School, a residential treatment center, an independent College Preparatory School, and is currently at an independent school for pre-k through eighth grade. She holds a master's degree in special education and is a licensed special educator in Massachusetts for students with mild to moderate disabilities, as well as in Vermont for students in kindergarten through age 21. She also has a bachelor's degree in psychology. She has her own business called Kenan Education Consulting LLC formed in 2017, and she works to support students with a variety of learning needs. In addition to providing in-class support to students in independent schools around Vermont. Elizabeth works with faculty and staff to teach how to support diverse learning needs. She is amazing. I have always learned from her and the ideas she's shared with me.

Today, we're going to talk about independent reading and how and WHY you should work with your child to develop this habit.
You may be wondering what I even mean when I say independent reading. Independent reading is when your child is reading on their own with no assistance from you. Oftentimes, students who independently read are stronger students overall. There is a connection between independent reading and reading excellence.
Not every child is going to begin to independently read by choice on their own. It is a skill and habit that we need to help them develop. I can say from personal experience that the more your child develops a habit of independent reading the more they are going to read. The more a child reads and practices their reading skills the better they are going to become at reading. And, the more a child reads the more exposure they have to the way words are spelled, the way language works and is used, and it gives them the opportunity to learn new vocabulary. This is why it is so important for us to help our children develop an independent reading habit.
So, today I am going to give you a couple of tips that you can do at home to help your child develop an independent reading habit.

And it really is important for them to be reading just the right books. Just right books help to build confidence, reading skills, and fluency as a reader.

We can't deny the COVID pandemic has changed the landscape of your child's education in the last year. Maybe, your kids have been in and out of school. Maybe they haven't received the same services they were getting previous to this. It is different. And a lot of families are wondering what impact those differences are going to have on their children and their educations.

Today I have Beth from Days with Grey on The Reading Project podcast. I have been following Beth on social media for quite some time and using her ideas with my own children. I have a really fun episode for you today. I actually have my husband stand with me, and we're going to talk about storytelling. Sam has practiced improvisational storytelling since he was a teenager. First through playing Dungeons and Dragons and then later storytelling with our children. I've personally witnessed his ability to make up stories spontaneously that are both engaging and enriching to our children. I know some parents are intimidated by storytelling. So I'm really excited for this episode, and I hope we'll be able to give you some tips to make it easier.
