This is our long-awaited ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP broadcast, this year pitting Black River High School, last year's runner-up that battled its way to the final rung for a second consecutive year, against Elyria Catholic High School, from which an excellent team is seeking the school's first championship. This program concludes the 36th season of "Scholastic Games," the weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio.
The show is produced from January through May of each year, though we do plan some reruns of past years' programs during the summer months. We hope our loyal fans will keep checking us out as we plan to sprinkle in a classic "blast from the past" or two from a few years ago.
This is semifinal #2, to determine the team to face Black River in the county academic championship, which will conclude the 36th season of "Scholastic Games," the weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. The teams in this playoff are Avon High School, the defending hampion, and Elyria Catholic High School. which like Avon, has been taking in all comers in this year's playoffs. If Avon wins today, the two schools in the championship will be the same two schools as last year with most of the same competitors, as both teams had majority junior class members last year. Counting last year and this year the teams have met three times, always with very high scores, but with Avon winning each time.

The teams in this playoff are Olmsted Falls High School, a five-time championship-winning school, though it has been several years since their last championship, and Black River High School, which was the runner-up in last year's championship broadcast. Both schools take academic competitions seriously, so this should be an exciting matchup. The winner of this contest will face either Elyria Catholic High School or Avon High School, whichever wins next week's semifinal no. 2. Avon is the defending champion which defeated Black River last year. However, Elyria Catholic has a strong team that could well knock them out of contention!

Needless to say, both have potential to "go all the way" but only one will emerge from today's program as a semifinalist!

Since Lake Erie College opened as a women's college in 1856, this institution in Painesville, Ohio, has been an important asset to the state of Ohio. The guest on this week's program is Ashley Mayse. Vice President for Enrollment. She describes how LEC serves student needs of today while maintaining the kind of small college environment that has enhanced the learning experience for generations of students.. Some of the college's buildings, like College Hall, have been around since the school's first classes were held in 1859, while others provide every necessary ingredient for preparation toward a twenty-first century career.

The teams in this playoff are Elyria Catholic High School, the only Catholic high school in the county and Firelands High School. located in Oberlin, Ohio, which serves a large mostly rural area in the county. Both of these schools have top academic teams this year and high hopes to reach our championship for the first time.

The guest on this week's offering is Tim Bulware, coordinator of online learning programs at Tiffin University, located in Seneca county, to the west of Cleveland and Lorain County. He describes how the campus is growing, even as the university's online access is expanding exponentially, as this institution which has served the region since the nineteenth century now prepares students for careers in the twenty-first. He describes programs ranging from the university's excellent courses in criminal investigation to A.I., sports programs, and online services from the bachelor to doctoral levels.
The playoffs begin! This is quarterfinal #1 between two of the highest-scoring schools in our first rounds of competition! This begins the final series of programs in our 36th season of "Scholastic Games," the weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. The teams in this playoff are Vermilion High School, and Avon High School. Avon is our defending champion, the team that, last spring, became only the fifth area school to have won the championship five times in our program's history. Vermilion is a two-time winner of our championship.

We periodically interview individuals at our supporting institutions for an update on programs and opportunities offered to students. Bob Tayek's guest is the Associate Dean of Admissions, Ryan Mann, who details not only some aspects of its history, but a number of the current activities at this dynamic, growing university.

On this Dialogues on Education interview, Bob Tayek speaks with author Namwali Serpell, a Harvard professor, whose book "On Morrison" is a comprehensive analysis of the writings of Lorain native Toni Morrison, the late novelist, editor and winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. Serpell offers unique perspective on Morrison's writings both in comparison it to literary classics and as interpretation of African American experience.

It is a 17-program weekly series produced from January through May of each year. We continue the rebroadcasts of this year’s programs. Each of the schools represented on this particular show have produced five championship-winning teams in past years. They are northern Ohio’s Elyria High School and Olmsted Falls High School. Both have large enrollments with veteran teachers advising the academic teams. We hope you enjoy the program. Remember new episodes are released each Monday around 6 p.m. Eastern Time (USA).
Welcome back to this program featuring the schools of Lorain county, Ohio. Here begins the program season that began early in 2025. Originally released at the end of January, it pits Firelands High School against Lake Ridge Academy. Lake Ridge is a private school in North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Firelands, located in Oberlin, represents the area of the historic Firelands of the Connecticut Western Reserve established in Northern Ohio in the nineteenth century. The schools have similar enrollments but Lake Ridge is among the schools that have won our championship five times. Don’t count Firelands out, though; they have an excellent team this year. This was the year’s first show, and the “Current Events” round actually focused on looking back to 2024, so it isn’t that current. It’s round two, about six minutes into the program, and asks for names of famous people who died that year: gone but not forgotten….well perhaps by some high school students. Listen and see if you remember them all. It follows the initial round that starts things off with general knowledge. We hope you enjoy this competition from Lorain County, Ohio, here in mid-America. Welcome to another of our summer series of reruns, so far all from our school year broadcasts from 2024, This one aired in February of that year so the current events round cill sound a little non-current. This summer is the program’s first release as a podcast. The teams are from Lake Ridge Academy, a prestigious private school in North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Vermilion High School, a large public school that straddles Lorain and Erie counties. Both schools have won our Scholastic Games championship in past years.

Naturally the current events round (Round 2) is "old news." How much do you remember from about seventeen months ago. It was way back during the Biden administration, and of course, if you're not from northern Ohio, some of it will be foreign to you, but it will be fun nonetheless.

See if you can remember back that far! It's amazing how much things have changed considering the beginning of that election year was just some seventeen months ago.
It's the program we've been waiting for! This chanpionship is the end of our 2025 season, but watch this space for reruns from last year that have never been available as podcasts before! Meanwhile, if you haven't heard the show...here it is.
It's the first rematch in the 35 years of our competitions. The teams are from Avon High School in Avon, Ohio, and Black River High School in Sullivan, Ohio, the school district of which extends from Medina county into Lorain County, making it eligible to become our Lorain County champion, an honor they deserve if they can beat the mighty Avon team.
Avon's team members are Aditya Rao, Jackson Cellura, and team Captain Mark Carney. For Black River the competitors are Josh Adkins, Stryker Charlton and team captain Nick Obarski. Both Carney and Obarski are former winners of the program's "Standout Scholar Award" which is presented each week to the team member, win or lose, who contributes the most to his or her team.
In the first round, Avon achieved the second-highest score of the season defeating Black River, but Black River lost with the highest losing score of the season, surpassing several of the winning scores and thereby earning a "wildcard" slot in the playoffs. Both teams defeated all of their opponents in the playoffs to arrive at the championship for a rematch. It's worth noting that in the first round, the one winning score higher than Avon's was that of Vermilion High School which lost to Black River in the quarterfinals!
Be sure to keep listening after the final score because there is a ten-minute interview with the winning team and their advisor following the program.
If Black River wins it will be its first Scholastic Games championship, rising to 13 the number of different schools that have won over the years. Avon has won four championships in past seasons, and if they win, the school will be added to the elite list of five-time winners, consisting of only Elyria High School, Olmsted Falls High School, and Lake Ridge Academy. This bout will be a part of the program's notable history either way!

Competing are quarterfinal winners Avon High School and Brookside High, of the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake, Ohio, school district.
Competing for Avon are Isabella Gigliotti, Jackson Cellura, and team captain Mark Carney. The Brookside team consists of Carter Grega, Simon Kramp, and team captain Elliot Rion. Both Carney and Rion are past winners of the program's "Standout Scholar Award" which is presented each week by scorekeepers who vote for the student who contributes the most to his or her team during the program.
As next week's program concludes the season for the current school year, watch for"reruns" of last year's programs during the summer months. The programs have not been presented as podcasts previously so they may be new to you (except for the content of the Current Events round).

This is the last of the quarterfinals, determining the last of our semifinalists for our Lorain County 35th annual academic championship to be presented the week of May 19th, 2025. Today’s competitors are the winners from the playoffs from our last two programs, Brookside in the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake district versus Grafton’s Midview High School.
Representing Brookside are Carter Grega, Simon Kramp, and team captain Elliot Rion. The Midview team consists of Percy Rose, Riley Mjolnir, and captain Reuben Greenly. Greenly is a past winner of our program’s weekly “Standout Scholar Award,” presented to a member of one of the teams judged by scorekeepers to have contributed the most to his or her team.
The winner today will face Avon High School in second semifinal on the May 12th broadcast, the week prior to our championship.

The school district in the city of Elyria, Ohio, was honored recently by special recognition from Governor Mike DeWine for the excellence of its reading program in the primary grades. Describing the innovative program is the Assistant Superintendent of Elyria Schools, Natalie Matthews.

This is the second of two playoff programs of which the winners will compete in the last of the quarterfinals leading up to our county academic championship. These playoffs are among the lower-scoring winning teams and a high-scoring “wildcard” team that must compete again, unlike the highest-scorers which go directly to that level.
This thirteenth show of the season will bring luck to one of today’s two teams. Both teams scored 240 points in their first visit to the program, Elyria’s Open Door Christian School with one of the lowest winning scores and Sheffield-Sheffield Lake’s Brookside High School with the second-highest of the losing scores. Only one of them will advance this time.
Open Door’s all-girl team, a rarity on our program, consists of McKenna Moore, Georgia Schmitkons, and team captain Molly Felty, today’s only competitor who is a previous winner of the program’s “Standout Scholar Award,”: which goes to the student judged by scorekeepers to have contributed the most to his or her team. From Brookside the team members are Carter Grega, Simon Kramp, and team captain Elliot Rion.

This program is our THIRD QUARTERFINAL, with teams earning sufficient points in the first round of competition to move directly to this level. The teams include the winner of last week’s program which ended the first round of team competitions. Elyria Catholic, Lorain county’s only Catholic high school, and Avon High School, winners in our third broadcast back in February,

This competition will determine the third of four semifinalists. The next two programs will determine the teams for the fourth quarterfinal. They will be among the lowest scoring winning teams from the first round (Elyria High, Grafton Midview, and Open Door Christian School), plus the second-highest losing team (Sheffield Brookside) which is designated a wildcard.

This week we present details of statewide action in the state of Ohio on a controversial topic. By July 1, 2025, all Ohio school districts are required to have a student cellphone policy in place. In this Dialogues interview Jessica Horowitz Moore of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce discusses some of the things that districts are mandating and some of the reasons the policies being put in place have been determined to be necessary.

On this week’s program, Jennifer Harmon, Community Engagement Director of the Elyria Public Library, one of the region’s largest, discusses what’s new at the library, including many programs serving readers from the very young to the senior set. Among them are the 1000 Books program for pre-schoolers and advances in technology to serve modern readers in many ways. She also gives start dates for the popular summer reading program. The Elyria Library system is the oldest in Lorain County, dating from 1870. Today it has several branches and the new headquarters facility in downtown Elyria where our Scholastic Games broadcasts are produced.

The teams this week are Brookside High from Sheffield Village, Ohio, and Elyria Catholic, Lorain county’s only Catholic high school and the fourth non-public school represented in this year’s competitions. The Brookside team consists of Carter Grega, Simon Kramp, and team captain Elliot Rion. From Elyria Catholic, the team members are Vito Careno, Noah Hanlon, and team captain Ryan Manville. Victims of early postponements, these teams are the last to compete in the first round of competitions.
This is our tenth program, but actually the eighth as it ends our set of first appearances. As playoff qualification is based on comparative scores, we were able to hold our first quarterfinals prior to this program. This show will determine the rest of the playoff teams. If the winner scores higher than 270 points it advances directly to quarterfinals. If the losing team scores higher than 230 points it may become a “wildcard” and earn a playoff position.

School security is a vital concern these days and one Lorain county district has taken a significant step forward. The Vermillion school system has installed a first-of-its-type school security system with direct links to law enforcement in the case of an intruder to any of Vermillion’s three campuses. In this interview, details about this cutting-edge electronic system are provided by the Vermilion Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Wes Weaver.

This ninth program of our 35th season is our SECOND QUARTERFINAL. Even as two postponed first-round competitions have yet to take place, the scores of this week’s teams, like last week’s were sufficiently high to qualify them for quarterfinals, so joining Vermilion High School as the second of our four semfinalist schools will be one of today’s high school teams, one from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio, and the second from the district the stems from Sullivan, Ohio, to the southwest corner of Lorain county, Black River High School.
The Amherst team consists of Nathan Stewart, Tony Davis, and team captain Aiden Workman, who won the program’s “Standout Scholar Award” in his first appearance on the program. Black River’s team is unique in that it lost in its first competition, to an outstanding team from Avon, Ohio, but its losing score of 300 was higher than most of our winning scores, earning it a “wildcard” slot in the quarterfinals. In fact, its losing score was slightly higher than the winning score of its quarterfinal opponent. (Weeks ago, Amherst defeated Avon Lake 280 to 180!) Their similar performances earlier virtually guarantee a competitive program.

Two postponed first-round competitions have yet to take place, but the scores of this week’s teams were sufficiently high to qualify them for the quarterfinals, so our first semfinalist school will be determined in this week’s broadcast. Our first quarterfinal teams are from the highschool in Vermilion, Ohio, and Keystone High School in LaGrange, Ohio.

It is a comprehensive interview with the grandson of Garrett Morgan, a significant figure in Black history. Morgan was an Ohioan who achieved success as a prolific inventor. His most notable innovations were the first three-position traffic signal, the first step in the development of modern traffic lights. He also devised an early form of gas mask, which saved lives following a disastrous Cleveland explosion in 1916. Memories about Morgan’s life include both his successes and his experiences with racial discrimination.

Concluding the 33rd season of the high school quiz program in Lorain County, Ohio, the annual championship features quiz teams from Marion L. Another record to be matched is of "Standout Scholar" Awards. On each week's quiz show, one student is nonored for "contributing the most to his or her team" and presented a $50 prize. When teams return for playoff eliminations, the same student may be honored additional times. A student may star in the academic team up to five times in any given year, and may win as a sophomore, junior or senior. Out of hundreds of student participants in 33 years, three students have achieved the record of eight such awards. This year, each of these two teams enters the championship with a student who has won seven "Standout Scholar" awards. Will one of them equal the record? It is a truly unique situation making for a highly competitive contest.

This year's academic championship is between the winners of our semifinals, following eliminations among our eight highest-scoring winning teams. Amherst Marion L. Steele High School is in competition with Lake Ridge Academy of North Ridgeville, Ohio. In our program's history, both of these schools have won the championship twice in past years. This program also includes a "Dialogues on Education" interview with the members of the winning team and their faculty advisor.
