On Episode 129 of Punk Rock Pariah, Greg & Grendel have an hour-long conversation with “Mira” from the street punk band Bezlad from Kharkiv, Ukraine, about their journey to escape the bombing of their city by Russian forces. Mira offers insights into the day-to-day experiences of people amidst the ongoing war.
A call to aid from Greg:
My dear Ukrainian friends in the band Bezlad from Kharkiv have written five songs during the war while fleeing the bombings in Ukraine. These songs have been written about the war and what it has been like for them. Having gotten to relative safety, they are looking to record these songs near Lviv, Ukraine. I asked if it was safe to record there, and their reply was, “Yes, the bombs only fall here every week or two.” I feel that their songs, written in the midst of war, are some of the most essential songs hardcore/punk could possibly produce right now. The rest of us can write ABOUT war, but Bezlad has been living it. As fellow artists, I want them to be supported as they create these new recordings. I offered to pay for the first ten hours of their recording session ($20 per hour) and am looking for donations to cover the rest. Recording, mixing, and mastering the entire record will cost $1200 total, so we are seeking $1000 in total donations. Since the band can’t receive PayPal payments, and as a single bank wire would be easiest for them, we agreed that I will accept donations via Paypal and Venmo (donation info is in the comments below). Then I will send receipts for every donation to the band along with a bank wire for the total amount. BLACK LIVES MATTER. PERIOD.
This is an unparalleled time in modern history where the masses are standing up against the systemic racism and white supremacy upon which our country has been built.
The question we must all ask ourselves is whether we are part of the solution or part of the problem. We must be consistently listening, learning, educating ourselves, and acting upon what we have learned. In her book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?, Beverly Daniel Tatum says, "[A] genuine commitment to interrupting racism is a long-term commitment...We all need community to give us energy, to strengthen our voices, and to offer constructive criticism when we stray off course." So we call upon all of our listeners to be that energy.
The best way to work towards being that energy is to start by educating ourselves. Even the most learned among us must be constantly evolving, which is part of the "lifelong commitment" that Beverly Daniel Tatum mentions above. In light of this, we wanted to share some of our favorite resources we have come across:
1) Black Lives Matter Resources are available HERE;
2) The Black Lives Matter At Schools 2020 Teaching Curriculum Resource guide for teaching K-12 is available HERE; and
3) The Social Justice Film Festival has put together a list of films, books, and resources that you can access HERE.
We also wish to share a few book recommendations of our own. Below this message are six of our favorites for learning about being anti-racist and/or a better understanding about the conditions against which the Black Lives Matters Movement is currently fighting. Please try to seek out a black-owned bookstore to purchase them. We recommend L.E.M.S., located right here in Seattle, or take a look at this list put together by the African American Literature Book Club.
In the words of Ibram X. Kendi, from his book How to Be an Antiracist, "One either allows racial inequities to persevere, as a racist, or confronts racial inequities, as an antiracist. There is no in-between safe space of “not racist.” The claim of “not racist” neutrality is a mask for racism."

Beforehand, I think is important to generate a political context of Chile in order to understand a little what is happening here. Chile is a South American country, the longest in the world, and with very varied climates, its capital is Santiago de Chile, it is in a valley in the central area of the country, basically it is the city where 80 percent of the population lives. Is country with an economy based on raw materials, mining, agriculture, services but industry destroyed over the past 30 years. A country where immigrants from different sides are conjugated, mostly descendants of Spanish and native people, with some important migratory waves, English, German, Italian and Croatian and new ones coming from the same American countries as Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Haiti and Venezuela, who escaping from the their contingencies or looking for better life opportunities. Believing this is a kind of social-economic paradise but founding many problems and dichotomies of a neoliberal system where the basic needs of people are not met.
Historically, had a dictatorship imposed in 1973 with the help of the administration of the United States shift and ended in 1990 through vote. This regime consisted of the overthrow of a legitimately elected socialist government imposing the foundations of what we know today as a neoliberal model. I have the impression of Chile; it was and potentially until today a field of experimentation and social laboratory for neoliberalism. So, from 1990 to date, we have had several governments with different political prisms that have only perpetuated the social differences between a political-economic class and the base and middle classes.
While it is true throughout these years there have been concrete experiences of social improvements that can meet the basic demands of the people. Simultaneously and in parallel, the perpetuation of the benefit of a few over many is present, where we have millionaires to the German standard and poor to the Mongolian standard.
Where the middle class lives to solve their problems through the capacity of indebtedness for life We have the worst statistics related to mental health, the highest rates of suicide in adults older people in the world, because they cannot pay their cost of living with the current pension system
In summary, we have a constitution established in dictatorship in 1980 and the perpetuation of benefits to a privileged class supported by a benefactor state that does not make relevant investment in socially relevant sources of concern.
Currently, as a result of a popular uprising that began with the demonstrations of secondary students who massively began to evade the payment of the subway ticket, It began a spark of a general social uprising, full of demonstrations that has spread by almost four weeks and that has a percentage of the population manifesting in the streets for different demands, but with a common denominator a system that for 30 years has failed to meet or meet the basic demands of the people: Quality Health, Decent Wages, corruption cases of the political class have real sanctions, the usurpation of natural resources, among others.

On episode 15 of PRP, Grendel heads on down to the Occupy Seattle site and delivers a field report from the movement. The first in a series of short "Sounds of Occupy Seattle" podcasts, you get to hear the protesters in the raw, and the commentary of both those present at the protest, as well as Grendel and his friends! On Episode 12 of the PRP Podcast, Grendel welcomes in fellow fatty food lover Rev from the band Success! The two sit down to an intimate conversation about being in a punk band from Seattle, touring with Nothington, and why Rev has chosen to become a vegan. Along the way, we learn that Rev has his own hot sauce (REV'S NORTHWEST HOT SAUCE...Many burritos were harmed during the making of it), that Grendel doesn't believe that Episodes 1 and 2 of Star Wars exist, and that the two of the are giant nerds who hang out at the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas. In Episode 10 of PRP, in this first of an (at least) two part series, Grendel celebrates the AMR15 Festival that took place June 15-19 in San Francisco, CA. Along with playing music from some of the bands that performed, Grendel interviews Mike Park (of Skankin' Pickle, The Chinkees, and B. Lee Band and founder of Asian Man Records) and plays part of the set he recorded from I Sing the Body Electric (a.k.a. Morgan Herrell of Pteradon, Hard Girls, and Classics of Love). Dig it!
On episode 9 of the Punk Rock Pariah Podcast, Grendel is joined by Adam Brown, one of the visionaries behind the award winning documentary film Sonicsgate. The two talk about the film itself and why you should care about the documentary even though you may not be a sports fan. Adam also unveils plans for a new nonprofit called the Green and Gold Community Coalition that brings together people from all segments of society who support creating a non-taxpayer funded multi-use facility in Washington State to help build tourism and create jobs. Grendel waxes philosophical on where we've been and where we are going as a nation. Hello Folks! First and foremost, sorry about the absence from the podcast for awhile. In the last month I have been in a car accident (just hours before the show) and had to do a speaking engagement when I would have otherwise been producing this podcast. Now that I have my own recording equipment at home, I hope that if something like that happens again, I can put together a shorter version of the podcast.
This is episode 4 of the podcast. It is called "The Alcohol Talking" after the song by Short Round (the final song on the podcast). There is no guest this week, but I hope you will enjoy it all the same. At just over 90 minutes, it is packed with punk rock awesomeness that you will enjoy the shit out of!
For episode 3, Ryan Koreski of The Damage Done and Jefferson Death Star came in to the studio and we spent a long time talking about growing up with punk rock, kids music, star wars, and the punk rock scene. Grendel is back with another punk rock podcast, this time with a very special guest...Chris Crusher of Smokejumper / Better Half Records. We sat around and shot the shit, spun some jams, and Chris played a bunch of live acoustic songs.
