Minding My BLACK Business is a podcast exclusively for Black Entrepreneurs who are looking to engage, inform, and support other Black Entrepreneurs as they manage the business of work! Working for someone else can be hell. As Black Entrepreneurs we can experience being targeted, feeling taken advantage of, or worse being made to feel invisible. Yet the road to self-employment for us isn’t easy. It’s filled with hurdles, such as identifying your audience, managing others' racial biases, while remaining dedicated to your vision and your products. Where do you turn when you’ve experienced self-doubt? How do you manage stress and worry that stalls your projects? When is it a good time to step back and address fear about what you’ve created? Well this is THE SPACE; this is OUR SPACE as Black Entrepreneurs to get those needs met. This movement is both professional and oh so personal. I’m glad you’ve found us. Welcome to the family!
I called in my business accountability buddy for this one. In working on business self-care, it’s always a good idea to get support. Andrew and I discuss what we’ve learned about ourselves in this stage of our businesses and what areas of our selfcare need improvement. We both took the selfcare assessment and implemented strategies in the selfcare workbook to address our selfcare needs. Check out our selfcare workbook!

Entrepreneurs let’s have a real talk about how managing our need to rest. How often do we sacrifice our rest to just “get the job done?” Chavalia shares her experience and provides guidance on how to improve our relationship with sleep.
Chavalia Dunlap-Mwamba founded Pink MahogHany in 2005, when she noticed the scents of once favorite fragrances changing without notice. Amidst these changes also came an influx of complaints from those whom she conversed with. Frustrations from an inability to wear or use certain fragrances due to adverse reactions such as headaches, rashes, and other allergy-like symptoms places urgency on her quest to create a line of products that gratify the senses without the addition of some of the less desirable ingredients.

Are we destined to be Entrepreneurs? Latricia shares how she fulfills her destiny and the triumphs and challenges she’s met along the way. This episode is filled with smart and savvy ideas about how to stay encouraged and brave day to day.
Latricia Clark Letsinger is a wife, mother, and Gigi from rural North Carolina who always had a passion for fashion. She has long been donned a Fashionista; receiving Best-Dressed superlative honors in both High School and College. Studying Business, Fashion, and Retail Management sparked, even more-so her love of clothing and desire for her own business.
Latricia believes in the power of “writing your vision and making it plain.” Over 15 years ago, while caring for a paralyzed and incapacitated mother, she named her business and perfected her business plan. This was the conception of what it is now, Elegant Occasions Limited LLC the world’s first and only mobile formal wear boutique that she began with her husband. Latricia sits at the helm as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer.
In August 2018, Latricia published her first edition of Designing Women Magazine. Having experienced tough times as a child and throughout adulthood, she wanted to create a platform where she’d divulge her lifelong struggles and pains in hopes of helping someone else dealing with issues of their own. Latricia began writing in high school and continued throughout college. She would journal her experiences, which ultimately, led to her creating poetry. She always felt destined to publish, and her peers encouraged her to write a book. Designing Women Magazine is Latricia’s creative heart to women all over the world; her way of rallying others to find their “WHY” in life that leads to living their best lives!

Representation matters. As Black Entrepreneurs we may find that our audience may be comprised of people that look just like us. What ways are you catering and considering your audience? Lisa gives us solid advice on how to prepare for and maintain our ideal audiences.
In the recession of 2009, Lisa Phillips lost her job and home to foreclosure. She was left with a 35k condo and only enough money to renovate the place doing the work myself to stretch my unemployment check. She reached the bottom; an electrical engineer with no job. Coping with my new reality, she came upon a strategy of owning inexpensive rental properties for cash flow that was possible, even when a traditional mortgage wasn’t obtainable. As her strategy started to show consistent results, she started teaching others about it on her platform Affordable Real Estate Investments.
Now, Lisa hand walks working professionals through creating their own passive income portfolio to $2,000 - $4,000 a month in income, which gives them the starting point to financial freedom. From there, Lisa always encourages her clients to think about what happens after they reach their target goals, and what their higher calling is after using properties as a tool to make that dream a reality.

Imagine building a business all while parenting. The potential hardships are numerous. Keisha teaches us on what to look out for, how to address those issues, and how to support fellow Parentpreneurs.
Keisha Reaves is a licensed professional counselor with a specialty in maternal health owns a private practice in Dunwoody, Georgia. Serving women with life transition issues, postpartum depression, infertility issues, and women who have experienced recent miscarriages has become her specialty and passion. She likes empowering women of all sorts and encouraging women through holistic practices, physical health and talk therapy. Being a new mom herself and hearing from clients and friends about the difficult transition into motherhood, she felt like there was a need for support. Often when people come to the hospital after a baby is born they go straight to the baby and ignore the lethargic, worn mother that just gave birth to the bundle of joy. She found that there were so many items and resources for women who were pregnant, but not much for women after they have the baby during those crucial months of transition. Keisha obtained her bachelor's degree in Psychology and Human Services from Clayton State University. She then completed her master’s degree in counseling and Psychology at University of West Alabama. She is a wife and mother to almost two-year-old, Ezra.

Family, I bet you’ve never met a Black female beekeeper. As Black Entrepreneurs we can find ourselves in industries that we don’t traditionally occupy and yet we flourish. Judith shares how she has been successful in doing so all while taking care of her community and herself.
Judith’s love of agriculture began at six years old. As a little girl, she always wanted a little red tractor. She wasn't raised on a farm but our family had hogs, a small cotton field beside our home. As a teenager, she worked with family members on the farm priming tobacco. On her journey in life, she continued to come back to agriculture, living on the land.
In 2003, she began to work for a nonprofit that provided resources for minority farmers and landowners. She worked as the project manager helping farmers get their produce in markets. She educated youth on agriculture-related careers and to create school gardens. While working with the nonprofit she noticed they had a beehive. She inquired about how bees make honey. She attended beekeeping school and continue to learn about bees from her mentor John Alston. She fell in love with bees and agriculture. As she continues to grow in her business, Hampton Roads Honey, she shares her love for bees and agriculture with schools, networking groups, and businesses in the form of honey products, agri-related workshops, and online classes. Her goal is to bring FUN BACK INTO AGRICULTURE.

No one should approach entrepreneurship without wisdom and connection from others. This episode I get the wisdom of a local entrepreneur who has been in business for 22 years, and is seen as a staple of our community. Brett teaches us what he’s learned and continues to learn in how to build a sustainable business that positively impacts your community.
Brett Hewitt’s life’s journey was changed when a stranger walked up to him and handed him a book to read, Visions for a Black Man by Dr. Na’im Akbar. While Brett was volunteering in a mentorship program, he realized how important it was for us to learn our history and culture and be proud of who we are and later he became a public speaker at local schools, prisons and churches.
While traveling to bookstores throughout the United States, Brett couldn’t find literature that pertained to the Black struggle, the large bookstore chains, who had Black literature sections, would put it way back in the back. He thought it was a disservice. Those observations provided the spark for his business, Positive Vibes, which he started in 1992 by selling books from the trunk of his car. In July 1996, he opened his first brick and mortar store in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through word of mouth, and plenty of community support, he’s proudly celebrating 22 years in business.

For those who have ever been curious about how therapists train, take a listen. The road to becoming a licensed mental health professional can be filled with bumps and hurdles. Deseray and I discuss the training involved to provide quality mental health services and she shares her journey.
Deseray is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern in the state of Florida, on her journey towards full licensure. She’s a mother, pain to purpose pusher, and entrepreneur! After having a former clinical supervisor go MIA without signing off on her clinical hours, Deseray was forced to restart her supervision process, delaying her time to become a fully licensed clinician! From this experience, she created Supervision Support. Her company connects professionals seeking supervision with supervisors who are ethically grounded and are willing to mentor, guide, and develop new clinicians who are on their way to becoming fully licensed. Her hope is that what happened to her never happens again and she can build a community of mental health professionals who are passionate, honest, and committed to bettering the field.

One in four of us meet the criteria for having a mental health disorder. As Black Entrepreneurs we are not immune from this. Do you have a plan in place when you need to improve your mental health? Listen as T-Kea shares her journey in managing her mental health disorders while running her business.
T-Kea Blackman is a mental health advocate, speaker and writer who lives by the Toni Payne quote, "I rather be living my truth happily than living a lie miserably.” She is the creator and host of the Fireflies Unite Podcast, a weekly podcast dedicated to bringing light into darkness (just like the fireflies) by sharing the stories of individuals thriving with mental illness within communities of color despite the disadvantages and racism that negatively impact their mental health. T-Kea’s articles have been published on The Mighty, Urban Faith, Blavity, and 21 Ninety.
Making a digital footprint, her articles have garnered over 45,000 views and encouraged individuals to seek treatment. Described as an inspiration, her heartfelt and powerful story is a testament that you can thrive despite having a mental illness. T-Kea was diagnosed with major depression and generalized anxiety disorders and is a suicide survivor. She previously worked in the television industry as a publicist and production/talent coordinator. Within her career, she provided support to TV One’s signature award-winning shows Unsung and Unsung Hollywood, BET’s Black Girls Rock!, The Soul Train Awards and BET X Youth Experience. Her diagnosis led her to use her entertainment background and communications skills to raise awareness for mental illness within communities of color.
She earned a master's degree in public relations and corporate communications from Georgetown University, and a bachelor's degree in radio, television and film production from Howard University.
