Guest Bio:

Tahiirah Habibi is an esteemed Sommelier, Founder and Executive Director. In 2012, Tahiirah opened the prestigious St.Regis, Bal Harbour. Her career ventured through many leadership roles to include, Micheal’s Genuine. Frustrated with the lack of diversity in the industry, she uses her skills to bridge the intersection of wine and culture. In 2017, she launched Hue Society as a safe space for the community to learn, commune and find resources in one place. She had created a cultural space for the Black community to share their developments and experiences in wine. Tahiirah is the first Black woman to grace the cover of Wine Enthusiast 40 under 40 list and has been featured in Ocean Drive as one of the top 5 female sommeliers, VinePair, Wine Enthusiast, Upscale Magazine, and Imbibe Magazine to name a few.

Guest Bio:

Iyeshima started her journey in the food justice movement over 10 years ago as a Green Guerillas Youth Tiller. A Jamaican native, she struggled with the process of assimilation into a new culture. Through farming she found great comfort in her community. Throughout her involvement in the movement, Iyeshima has taught food justice, advocated for universal free school lunch, assisted in the development and sustainment of youth-led organizations, and is now the Project Director of East New York Farms! She is dedicated to integrating youth empowerment and leadership into adult dominated sectors. With a double major in Political Science and Sociology, Iyeshima wishes to combine her passion for food justice and her knowledge of American politics to drive the importance of food in people’s everyday life.

Guest Momologist, Meet Darnetta Forteau, Director of Admissions . After 18 years in retail leadership and training, Darnetta transitioned into non-profit work and has spent the last 5 years as an Admissions Director. New to St. Philips School and Community Center, she works with an array of different families and genuinely enjoys spending her days helping parents make important educational decisions for their children. Her career shift was born out of her desire to be living a more purposeful life and she sees how God opened many doors to allow for that to happen. Darnetta Forteau lives in Dallas, TX with her husband of 17 years, Damion, and their two little girls, Quinn (10) and Margot (9). They love to travel and are big fans of Korean culture.

Guest Momologist, Kellee Murrell received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History Education from Clark Atlanta University and a Master’s in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. She began her career in Dallas at Tyler Street Christian Academy as a history teacher then continued her passion to educate children at Richardson West Junior High in Richardson ISD. It was there that Mrs. Murrell’s role in education was expanded, serving as the 7th grade girls basketball coach, 21st Century after-school program coordinator, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) campus coordinator and teacher. Mrs. Murrell, a native New Yorker, is married to Mark Murrell, Deputy Chief of Community Prosecution and Community Courts for the City of Dallas, and has two wonderful children, Eden and Mark Jr., both students of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

Child Obesity has been on a steady rise over the last 5 years. Childhood obesity in the Black population in the US has climbed to 22% versus 25.8% in the Latino community. Today, we have a guest Momologist and mother of 2, Vanessa Rissetto, to discuss obesity and more.

Meet Vanessa Rissetto

Vanessa received her MS in Marketing at NYU and completed her Dietetic Internship at Mount Sinai Hospital where she worked as a Senior Dietitian for five years. She is certified in Adult Weight Management (Levels I & II) by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her work in private practice also includes treatment of GI disorders, bariatric surgery, weight management, PCOS, and family nutrition. She is mostly interested in helping clients to take an active role in their health journey, any of her clients can tell you she motivates and ensures that they always achieve success. Vanessa was named by Essence magazine as one of the top 5 black nutritionists that will change the way you think about food.

Vanessa lives in Hoboken NJ with her husband, two kids and their new goldendoodle, Freddie. An exercise junkie she is always up for any class as long as it's after she rides her peloton.

She has worked at the Department of Veteran Affairs as a clinical social worker for 13 years. In April of 2019, she opened a private practice called Tomorrow and Beyond PLLC in Desoto, Texas. The mission of the practice is to normalize mental wellness for black and brown families. Her specialty is in assisting individuals process traumatic experiences that hinders them from being their best selves. She’s a current professor at Texas Christian University where she sees herself as a catalyst to mold future social workers. LaTisha Thomas does all of this in hopes to live out the legacy of her parents and to ensure her four children have the lives they deserve.

Meet Inger Shaye Colzie is an ADHD Coach and Psychotherapist specializing in making a difference for Black woman executives and entrepreneurs, supporting women through clarity, empowerment and resilience. She has successfully run her practice, Alchemy Coaching & Counseling, as a therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 15 years in spite of being undiagnosed until in her 50s. She offers the benefits of professional expertise with a lifetime of experience.

Topic: When Black women are the token minority in the workforce, we attempt to seek out other Black women co-workers within the office environment. We give the extra inner ‘black fist’ when she is in a higher, executive position. But what happens when that sense of pride and #blackgirlmagic turns to misery and dread the hands of said Black woman? Recently, a collective group of women, called #BlackFemaleAnonymous, wrote a piece in Medium entitled, “The Truth About Essence”, in which they discussed intimidation and possible retaliation upon the demand for resignation of CEO Richelieu Dennis, Michelle Ebanks, Joy Collins Profet, and Moana Luu. It does bring up an interesting discussion of working under black women in leadership positions. Topic: Menopause affects all women regardless of race or socioeconomic background. However, recent studies have shown that the experience of menopause is different among different racial groups. African Americans have more estrogen related symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urine leakage) than all the other ethnic groups. Additionally, African Americans are less likely to have somatic symptoms (headaches, difficulty sleeping, racing heart, stiffness and soreness in joints) than all other ethnic groups. Unfortunately, when it comes time for menopause, you're also likely to have more intense symptoms than your white peers. She’s been named North Carolina’s Mother of the Year 2020 by American Mothers, Inc.!⁣ Aviva currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, two cats, and four wild animals who sometimes pretend they’re well-mannered children. Food deserts tend to be more populated by low-income residents, who are not as attractive a market for large supermarkets, and have reduced mobility. Food deserts lack suppliers of fresh protein sources such as poultry, fish and meat, along with fresh fruit and vegetables, instead, relying on convenience stores, which provide processed and sugar- and fat-laden foods, which are known contributors to the United States' obesity epidemic.

Mahogany Moms of the Week: This Momologist of the Week is Dr. Raissa Ferron. This wife, and mother of two is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate coursework within the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. Her accolades are too much to mention for our hour-long podcast, but prominent notables include being the first African-American woman to earn tenure in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Engineering News Record 2016’s Top 20 under 40, and American Concrete Institute (ACI) Young Member for Professional Achievement Award in 2018. Can we talk finances and money management?!? As a mom, I always feel like I’m ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. This becomes a bit challenging as a budding entrepreneur. The constant shift our finances may leave one to wonder if this entrepreneur journey is right for them. Only one in 10 African Americans work with a financial professional compared with one in four white Americans, according to the 2015-2016 African American Financial Experience Prudential report said. I get it-- we don’t want everybody to know our financial business. It leaves us open and vulnerable to criticism in how we should be handing our life….not that we should be having that line of thinking. With such a taboo topic (especially in the African American community), we will discuss the factors contributing to the lack of financial confidence in daily living and our small business, with Dorinda Walker.

Topic: Black hair and hair culture has been a form of political activism for centuries. When black women were forced to cover our heads, we wore beautiful headwraps, highlighting our beauty. But penalized for the creativity and originality. To the 1960’s, when certain types of hairstyles were pictured equivalent to resistance. The advertising presence shifted in the late 1960’s- 1990’s, emphasizing black hair care be relaxed. Black women once again are resisting the traditional relaxed look, to its natural and cultural representation of curly/kinky hair and braids/cornrows. The US government isn’t too keen of black women being autonomous of our hair and bodies--some can make the argument about this overseas too. Schools and the military have placed discriminatory hair policies, due to lack of understanding (and cultural insensitivity) to black/brown individuals. The battle between our autonomy and black hair care remains. We will discuss the most recent piece of legislation, called the C.R.O.W.N act, which was created in support of banning these hair policies. How does this act translate to us as success in the workforce? What are we teaching our daughters about their hair? And what are teaching our sons as acceptable beauty?

Mahogany Mom of the Week: Our Mahogany Mom of the week is Karen Griffin. Karen constantly teaches the community about the history of jazz at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City. Her daughter says she worked full time and took care of two girls as a single mom. Karen, as her daughter praises "Is an angel, loving, giving, and God-fearing". Season 2 | Episode 21: Midwifery

Every August, U.S. Breastfeeding Committee marks this as National Breastfeeding Month. The World Health Organization (W.H.O) encourages breastfeeding for at least 6 months, with numerous benefits to the growth and development of you child. Specifically, in the last week of August, black mothers celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week. Why do back moms need a week to celebrate aside from the masses, you ask? Black Breastfeeding Week was created because for over 40 years there has been a gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates. The most recent CDC data show that 75% of white women have ever breastfed versus 58.9% of black women. The fact that racial disparity in initiation and even bigger one for duration has lingered for so long is reason enough to take 7 days to focus on the issue. We will dive into these factors with our guest Momologist, LaQuita Brazile.

We create versions of portray to the outside world, when deep down, we are suffering. We act out of character. We are tired. Hopeless. Overwhelmed. Moody. And we can’t quite put our finger on why we act this way. Today we are exploring postpartum depression as an African American mom.

Marvelous Mahogany Mom of the Week: Azure Saunders Dillion. A mom of a young son, she is an advocate for all things mental health, and is working with the community in bringing mental health awareness as well as brick/mortal structures to the southern Dallas area.

Symptoms:

Feeling sad, hopeless, empty, or overwhelmed

Worrying or feeling overly anxious
Feeling moody, irritable, or restless
Oversleeping, or being unable to sleep even when her baby is asleep
Having trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions

Topic: Did you know African Americans make up more than 40% of the homeless population?! Nearly half of homeless are families with children. Specifically in the Dallas and surrounding counties, these numbers are growing, even in cities that previously sighted no homeless populations. While cities boast of resources to assist providing shelters, the tone of ‘our neighbors’ are vastly different than what we see and hear. The challenge to overcome the odds is an uphill battle. The struggles with infertility are not new in the medical community. Technologies in science have allowed success in assisted reproduction. However, the process can be traumatic and isolating. Gladys Mae West. She is an American mathematician known for her contributions to the mathematics underpinning Global Positioning Systems. In 1956 West began to work at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, where she was the second black woman ever to be employed. West began to collect data from satellites, eventually leading to the development of Global Positioning System. West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018 one of the Air Force Space Command's highest honors. She has 3 adult children and seven grandchildren.

In recent weeks Instagram star Blac Chyna caused an uproar with her endorsement of a skin lightening cream. Getting paid for promotional products and services can come at a cost to one’s audience and followers. Frequent use of bleach whitening creams can be interpreted as self hate. Replace bleach whitening creams with weaves or having blonde hair, and one can argue the same premise. What long term outcomes do we see with our children (particularly black/brown girls) with the media diminishing our natural appearances? “Impostor Syndrome” is all about not feeling confident about your accomplishments, skills, or capabilities, especially when you’re setting off to do something new in your career or life. The term was first coined by clinical psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes, in 1978, who described individuals who had a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud.” This concept has always been a discussion among successful women, and it is gaining more traction as girls outperform boys in the classroom, more women graduate college and are obtaining executive positions typically held by men. Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In” comes to mind with Impostor Syndrome. Let’s discuss Impostor Syndrome and what it means as a mom and especially as a black woman.

Topic: The Effects of Unresolved Trauma on Parenting

Parental emotion regulation and coping skills in dealing with stressful events in life have a significant impact on the child’s emotional and social development, especially during infancy and early school years. Children typically learn to regulate their emotions better if their parents manage their own stress well. In contrast, unsupportive, distressed parenting can induce less effort in children to regulate their emotions and use effective coping skills in response to stress. Guest Momologist: Marcella Tarpley

A native Californian and educator for over 20 years, Marcella Ann Tarpley is currently a Behavior Support Specialist for the Moreno Valley Unified School District. She holds two Master’s Degrees, one in Special Education and the other in Teaching. She has taught students with disabilities in grades 3-12 and has also had various positions outside the field of education as a restaurant manager, nanny, secretary, and mail handler. She currently is working on her doctorate degree and a license in clinical psychology. To continue her efforts on behalf of foster youth, she currently serves as a board member for Kamalii Foster Family Agency where she donates her time and resources teaching foster youth how to sew. She was the recipient of the 2015 Riverside County Office of Education Site Support Staff of the Year Award. In the community she is well known for her advocacy efforts in training parents, social service professionals, and educators on how to maximize student success. In her spare time when not advocating for students, Marcella enjoys quilting, road trips, and listening to books on tape.

LaHeather Wilson is native of Longview, Texas. LaHeather is inspiration speaker, certified peer recovery specialist and advocate. She is also the owner of Peace Buy an interior consulting company. Her 2014 award winning documentary “I AM MORE” won a Lone Star Emmy Award and was nominated for a National Emmy Award. Her inspiring documentary depicts her heartfelt journey from tragedy to triumph. Her documentary is currently being used as an educational catalyst within law enforcement, reentry court and at the city, state and government official level. Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. Wealth is directed correlated to he level of giving. Although the level of wealth is far less than the white household, African Americans have a long standing history of providing to philanthropic causes. We (Black/African Americans) don’t consider ourselves as such. Blacks and African Americans actually donated a higher percentage of their incomes to charity than any other ethnic group in this country. Most notably the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) was constructed in part by fundraising and established philanthropies. Today, we will discuss the state of philanthropy among African American women. Welcome our guest, Akilah Wallace.

Akilah is Executive Director for Faith in Texas, a multi-racial faith based, social justice organization. She has 17+ years of experience as a relationship manager, with expertise in fund development, event planning & promotions, marketing, multicultural media sales and project management. Akilah’s love for connecting community organizations with financial and in-kind resources has resulted in over $5 million in revenue support. She is currently pursuing a degree in Human Services Management & Leadership at the University of North Texas at Dallas, and has earned a Nonprofit Management Certificate from the Center for Nonprofit Management.

In 2013, Akilah launched Distinguished Ones: A Philanthropic Initiative, respectfully known as #BlackDFWGives, an educational and inspiring, online initiative seeking to heighten the platform for philanthropy education and the next generation of philanthropists of color throughout North Texas. Her philanthropic leadership includes the founding of Texas’ first Black/African-American giving circle HERitage Giving Fund at Dallas Women’s Foundation, awarding nearly $30,000 in grants to Black and women-led organizations. A 2018 Dallas Public Voices Greenhouse, Op Ed fellow, Akilah is a Dallas Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree and recipient of The Dallas Foundation Top 10 Good Works Under 40 Award. She is a charter member of The Golden Circle and Dallas Women's Foundation’s XIX Society and former “Big” with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She currently serves on the board of directors of Trinity Commons Foundation, Seeds to STEM and Southern Dallas Progress Community Development Corporation.

Research shows that black women are at greater risk than white women of developing or dying from a handful of cancers, including those of the breast, colon/rectum, lungs, and cervix. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. in 2014. From an Ebony Magazine article, according to ACS’s Cancer Facts & Figures for African American’s 2013-2014, approximately 27,060 new breast cancer cases were expected to occur among African American women. Breast cancer incidence rates are higher among white women for most age groups. However, among younger women under age 40, the mortality rate of breast cancer is higher in African Americans than in whites. While October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness, we will chat with one mom is not only surviving cancer herself but so is her son.

Guest Momologist: Stephanie Cooksey

Stephanie Cooksey is a native of North Texas and currently lives in Allen, TX. She has been married to Marcus Cooksey for over 17 years and is the mother of two boys, Cameron (15yrs old) and Evan (12yrs old). She began college at the University of Houston and graduated from the University of North Texas. Stephanie is a “Momtrepreneur” and is currently the COO of LUI Transport, LLC, which she started with her husband a couple of years ago. Stephanie has a passion for education and spends a major portion of her days volunteering at her sons’ schools in the PTA and on the school’s PTA board. Because of her family’s personal experiences with childhood leukemia and breast cancer, they spend most of their volunteer time volunteering and advocating for organizations that support families experiencing the same fight and for organizations that provide monies for research for the cure and treatment of cancer. Stephanie loves to travel with her family and experience life as “the natives” do in the places that they visit.

In 2017, she received the honor of Region 11 (Tarrant County) Educator of the Year for the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) for her service to the staff, students and community of Tarrant County. Keonna is currently employed as an educator at Janet Brockett Elementary School in Mansfield Independent School District. In addition to her years of service in education, Keonna has served in professional educational organizations including Jack & Jill, Inc. of Fort Worth Chapter, a member of the Fort Worth Alliance of Black School Educators (Local & State member), Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, and a Lifetime member of the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association. Episode 15: The Black Mom Midlife Crisis/Moment

Research suggest and age difference between the genders. For men, the ‘crisis’ begins roughly late 40’s-early 50’s, while women start their internal struggle between 35-44. What does the struggle consist of?--is it a feeling of being stuck, personally and professionally? Today we will explore this and what this looks like for black women/mothers. Even the term ‘crisis’ will be explored too.

Examples of Midlife characteristics:

Feeling discontent with one’s life or lifestyle including people and activities which may have, at one time, provided more fulfillment
Questioning decisions made years earlier
Confusion about one’s achievements and questioning why “I failed to manifest the life I thought I would have by now”
Confusion about “who am I” beyond the roles assigned by others, both in the workplace and in one’s personal life.
Anger, expressed or hidden, over trying to fulfill the expectations of others or wanting their approval, in lieu of pursuing one’s own wishes or dreams
Yearning for the early years, wanting to retreat rather than move forward

Here are questions to ask (based on the Psychology Today article):

What do I feel I should have done by this time in my life?
Is there something more important and fulfilling that I can focus on now?
What do I want more of in my life? What have I imprisoned that is crying to be free?
How can I ensure a commitment to living a significant life?

Postpartum health is just as important (if not more important) as prenatal health for new and expectant mothers, especially for Black women. If you listened to our 3rd episode, entitled, The Black Maternal Birthing Experience, with our guest, Jen Sarduy, we discussed many factors contributing to the disparities of healthcare among black women during pregnancy. This serves as the second part from our Black Maternal Health episode. According to Psychology Today, black mothers endure twice the risk of depression, and anxiety compared to our white counterparts, that often go untreated. Episode 12: Adopting While Black

From 1999-2017, the total number of adoptions in the United States totaled 271,831, with most adoptions being from birth up to 2 years old, and more girls being adopted than boys. In 2016, 9988 Black or African American children were adopted in the US, compared to 27776 children identifying as White. Over a 13-year period, from 2009-2012, Texas remained one of the top 5 states for adoption, having 13920 adoptees. In 2017, the number of adoptees in Texas was 406. Today, we will be talking with one mother who adopted two African American children, from different states. We will discuss her choice behind adopting.

Shannon Powell Hart has lived throughout the United States, sharing stories as a journalist. Hart’s career began at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she studied radio, TV, and film. Episode 10: Black Surrogacy- Redefining the Norms

Surrogacy first went public in the US during the late 1970's. The surrogacy didn’t involve a financial compensation, otherwise known as traditional surrogacy. A team made up of Noel Keane and Dr. Ringold introduced the first surrogacy clinic — Infertility Center — making history with artificial insemination. Surrogate pregnancies have doubled since 2015. We most often hear of other ethnicities becoming surrogates, and seldom in the AA community (not that it doesn’t happen). Why is that?!? Most recently, Kim Kardashian delivered her third child, via a (young) Black woman surrogate. Today’s topic will discuss about what it means to be an African-American surrogate and it’s perception within our community.

Episode 9: Black Families and Homeschooling

In the last 15 years, the number of black children in homeschool has doubled from 103,000 to about 220,000. Black parents cite a number of reasons for homeschooling children, including concern over peer pressure and drugs at school -- but increasingly, they are also citing school-related racism as a reason to keep students at home (PBS News April 2018). Mel and Tash will chat with an African-American Mom on how she is balancing homeschool, philanthropy, and self-care.

Episode 8: The Rise of Black Women and Gun Ownership

Upon the inauguration of President Trump, we have seen an obvious surge in African American gun owners, and one can question if the increase we’ve noticed has been trending upward over the last 30 years. The most dramatic increase we’ve seen are those of women. Black women are among the higher rated individuals of gun ownership. In addition to political uncertainty, there are other reasons behind an individual owning a gun, from personal safety to self-empowerment. We will discuss the rise of Black women gun owners changing the narrative.

Guest Momologist:

LaTasha Oliver is the Chief Operator for Body By “O” and Body By “O” Tactical. She began her endeavors as a personal trainer with the organization in December 2014 alongside her now husband Oliver Kingdom. Her experience as a firearms instructor began in August 2016. LaTasha is still in training to become an effective and proficient firearms instructor. Her current title with Body By "O" Tactical is Range Safety Officer (RSO). Her role in Body By “O” operations include the developing and evaluation of programs on both the fitness and firearms side. Her focus in the organization is geared toward the Black women coming for services. LaTasha is also a currently enrolled in the graduate Social Work program at University of Texas at Arlington. She specializes in macro social work and is scheduled to graduate in December 2018. Her passion for the well-being of the Black community, with emphasis of Black women drives her work with Body By “O” and her future plans as a macro practice social worker.

LaTasha is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, born and raised. Business opportunities for Body By “O” and her choice in graduate school influenced her decision to leave Shreveport and move to Dallas. Outside of work and school, LaTasha spends time doing things she loves like reading, cooking, date nights with her husband and being a tv junkie. LaTasha has been with her husband for 4 years and married 2. She recently celebrated her 2-year anniversary, 34th birthday, and son’s 10-year birthday all in the month of June.

In the age of social technology, sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein, R.Kelly and Bill Cosby are no longer hiding their "Hollywood celebrity insider” behavior. It’s disgusting and has been acceptable behavior. Women are now more empowered about themselves, and their future to hold men accountable for their behavior. Strained relationships: the mental stress can be just as detrimental as the physical. One can argue it leads to physical ailments. Women are likely to carryover this mental stress than men.
