This week on The Movie Power Hour, we're diving into everyone's favorite film, Obsession! It's rare to see a movie make such a massive cultural impact, and it feels like you can't go anywhere without hearing people talk about it. We owe so much of that to 26-year-old creator Curry Barker and his incredible cast. Inde Navarrette delivers a truly unforgettable performance, and Michael Johnston is fantastic as well. In the year 2000, John Cusack was still relevant and making decent movies. Let us travel back to that magical time with High Fidelity, based on a novel by Nick Hornby. Directed by Stephen Frears and co-starring Lisa Bonet and Jack Black, the movie follows Rob, a man not dealing with a breakup in the healthiest of ways. In July of 2018, Disney decided to fire James Gunn over tweets he made a decade prior. In October of that same year, DC invited him to come and direct a movie for the dark side and handed over the reins to The Suicide Squad. It is the equivalent of sleeping with someone who your ex hated. We talk about the film and James Gunn as a director, the far inferior, and David Ayer directed Suicide Squad from 2016 and, of course, sharks.
America: The Motion Picture has been ravaged by the critics, so the Movie Power Hour is here to shine a light on this hilarious gem. Released in 2004, James Wan's directorial debut helped change horror movies for the better part of the 2000s, with critics coining the term "torture porn." The Fincher/Nolan-off continues!! In our first Fincher episode, we talk about every misguided teenage boy's favorite film, Fight Club. Released in 1999, this was David Fincher's fourth feature film and perhaps second good one? Brad Pitt's body is perfection in this flick, can David Fincher's directing match that?

Christopher Nolan's fifth movie, released in 2006, pits Christian Bale against Hugh Jackman in a tale of dueling magicians. This film was Nolan’s follow-up to Batman Begins. Our inability to go to movie theaters has taken us to some weird places, but we think we finally found a happy space. David Fincher and Christopher Nolan have made some of the most impactful movies of our lives. From now until March 16, we will go through their filmography. First, we will dedicate full episodes to their best couple of films. After that, we will cover their films before the final episode, where we decide who is our favorite director out of these two iconic people.
In David Fincher we trust. Be it Facebook, serial killers, or Ben Affleck. So when we heard he directed a film about the making of Citizen Kane we were puzzled. We had no idea it was about a drunk writing genius who was soon to become one of our heroes. Or is he the villan? This is an unlikely story about how we came to idolize a man named Mank.
As we were preparing this episode, HBO Max blew everyone's minds and announced a tremendous deal. As soon as we mentioned this tremendous deal, we had an unexpected visitor who we thought was busy at the moment. Once we get our visitor off the mic, we go on to discuss Andrew Patterson's excellent debut film, The Vast of Night.

The Spooktacular is reaching its third act, so we had to make this one special. Electro and Banno take you back to the horrific 60s portrayed in Alfred Hitchcock's horror classic Psycho.Make yourself a couple of peanut butter sandwiches and tuck yourself into bed because this is a scary one.
The spooktacular blasts ahead with 1997's Event Horizon.Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, whose filmography can be best described as "interesting," to say the least. This was his effort to make "The Shiningin space." Did the guys think he achieved that? Listen to find out!

We had low expectations for this film, yet it still disappointed us. Parasite won Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay over the likes of Martin Scorcese and Quentin Tarantino, has the Academy lost its mind? Apparently not because we talked about Bong Joon-Ho’s movie for so long that we had to slice the episode in half like a fierce Jaguar attacking its prey. Part one gets through most of the plot, and we went through most of the pot.
For the time being, movie theatres are a thing of the past except in Scandanavia for some reason? Luckily we have Netflix who is continually releasing new movies. This episode we talk about Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s directorial debut The Platform. Electro and Banno found the film to be deliciously disturbing. Lil’ Lil is also back again and she has more than a ‘lil to say about the film and her official nickname. Oz didn’t watch this one but was more than high enough to be a part of the conversation.
We’re sick about all this pandemic talk, and the cure comes in the form of this podcast. Movie theatres seem to be a thing of the past at the moment but before the outside world was shut down we were able to make it out to one more movie. The Hunt is the latest film to come out of Blumhouse Productions which Electro and Banno really enjoyed. Oz was not really convinced of the story except for the excellent acting delivered by Sturgill Simpson. This time director Leigh Whannell takes a shot at The Invisible Mandoes an acceptable job, at least according to Electro. The guys also go on an extended conversation about the history of the universal monsters leading to an inevitable discussion about The Mummy.
This week, Electro and Banno try to figure out if they should ditch the podcasting game and instead start a boy band. This episode is what is called in the movie biz a "double-feature." We had to include a review of "Bad Boys' because "Birds of Prey' was so bad we could not dedicate a whole hour to it. The way we see it, Ethan Hawke is the only bird of prey we need!

All we need is Electro, and his list of 48 movies he saw in the theatre last year ranked from worst to first. We couldn't dare unleash the whole episode at once, so we broke it down into two parts. Our second ever Hawke Talke has Electro and Banno talking about First Reformed. This 2017 film features Ethan Hawke playing a pastor that has his life turned upside-down when a pregnant Amanda Seyfried shows up at his church. His boss is Cedric the Entertainer, which further complicates matters for him as he deals with an existential crisis. It was written and directed by Paul Schrader, who wrote other great movies like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

This movie is so influential to the guys that it is the reason this podcast exists and a movie the regularly watch to this day. In this episode oh the Movie Power Hour, Electro and Banno discuss one of Hollywoods most famous directors, M Night Shyamalan. Specifically his last two films "Split" and "Glass." Electro talks about his excitement, both mentally and physically, when he saw the ending to "Split" in 2016 which hinted at a sequel to "Unbreakable." That sequel was finally released this year as "Glass" and it left Electro feeling a little unsatisfied. The trilogy did leave Electro with many questions. Mostly of the "Am I into older phycologists" and " Why do James McAvoy's abs do that to my pants" kind.
