I have a goal of being in great shape when I’m 50, but if you saw me yesterday you wouldn’t have known it.  I didn’t get out and exercise, and I ate a steak at Texas Roadhouse for dinner.  I may have that goal, but the direction I took yesterday will never lead me to that goal.

The same lesson applies to businesses across the web.  We set huge financial goals, but we spend our days learning little SEO tricks instead of just writing good content, we never launch the product because we’re afraid of what people will think, we are too afraid to negotiate a deal, etc.

In this episode we take a step back from the “quick, practical” tips taught in other episodes and we focus on a more important, fundamental aspect of your business–your direction.  In the episode I talk about how important it is to track your ACTUAL RESULTS toward your financial goals, and refer to this free spreadsheet that you can download to track your net worth.

In this episode I interview Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Shane was a football coach and Jocelyn an elementary school librarian when they heard about creating an online business and dove in head first. They quit their jobs within a year and now make over six figures every single month.

What’s in this episode

  • Exactly what to do to go out and find your audience and drag them back to your website
  • How to create a network of smaller sites
  • How to use a forum to create the content on your site
  • Pricing digital products

Resources Mentioned

  • Flipped Lifestyle
  • USHistoryTeachers.com
  • CoachXO.com
  • ElementaryLibrarian.com

Note: At one point Shane accidentally said they were earning high six figures per month. Slip of the tongue. He meant low six figures per month and emailed me to make sure I mentioned this in the show notes so he wouldn’t be misunderstood. But seriously, after $100,000 per month… who really cares?!?! 🙂

The business breakdown is a new feature on the Income School Podcast.  In my opinion, most business podcasts are too philosophical and don’t have enough actionable, practical tips.  The business breakdown solves that by taking ideas and theories and helps listeners to see how to build a business in a practical way.  I think you’ll love it.

Optin Monster – It’s just a simple popup, but with a twist that makes it incredibly powerful. It only shows the popup when someone is rapidly scrolling to the top of the page (as in when they are about to hit the back button and leave your site forever anyway). When I get about 5 people per day to join the email list without a popup, and then I switched to Optin Monster and started getting over 100 people per day joining my email list. The coolest part? Those are 100 people who were leaving my site anyway, and they didn’t get bothered with the popup until they were done reading the post. Pretty sweet. Check it out here.

One of the keys of developing a community is to manage customer expectations.  If you splash your email address all over your website, then you need to respond.  If you ask for comments, you better read and respond.  If you ask for sales, you better help your customers if they have trouble.

But the truth is that website owners often deal with millions of customers and potential customers.  In this episode, I show you how to manage relationships with your visitors in a reasonable way so that you can give them what they expect, without overpromising on the time you can give them.

No business tip has been more beneficial to me than a lesson I learned on a podcast 3 years ago.  The podcast was an interview on Smart Passive Income about writing helpful blog posts.  Pat Flynn wrote an article about me and the success I had following the advice from that podcast.

The suggestion that helped me so much was that the interviewee mentioned that he sometimes spent 2 or 3 days on a single blog post.  This blew my mind, because before then I had not spent more than 45 minutes on a blog post, and most of my posts were a measly 500 words long.  As soon as I implemented the “shockingly helpful content” rule in my business, it immediately took off.

In today’s podcast, my goal is to inspire you to create something shockingly helpful on your website.  It’s the best marketing you can buy.

But the reality is that tools like WordPress and a quality hosting company make running a website incredibly easy. In fact, I find that the dips and plateaus in my business are usually caused by me spending too much time tweaking the technology I use to podcast and create my website, and not enough time simply recording videos with my cell phone for youtube, opening up a word processor and typing a blog post, or firing up the mic and recording a podcast.

Business coaches talk about “finding your niche” like they would finding your soulmate–as if there were only one “right” one out there, and you just have to find it.  It isn’t true, and it keeps thousands or millions of people each year from starting businesses that could have been successful.

The truth is that to be successful online, you simply have to ask yourself one question: “What is one way I can be helpful to others, that I could do by sharing information on a website?”  Answer that, and you have a business.

Now that you have that business, will you spend the next 6 months thinking about it, second-guessing yourself, or will you throw down all out thermo-nuclear war on that topic until you have the best resource on the web for that topic?  If you choose the second option, you’ll likely be rewarded with income.

Business advice is everywhere.  It’s in my earbuds, my RSS feeds, on my Facebook newsfeed–and constantly on glossy ads in my mailbox.

The most popular bits of business advice are those which require the least amount of work and expertise, and yet produce the quickest and most dramatic hockey-stick-graph results. I love quick fix business advice.  I’ve implemented many of those techniques and some have actually produced results. But the truth is that tricks only last a short time.

To truly succeed, there is a business lesson that must always be applied.  It’s desperation, and it’s the business lesson nobody wants.

In this episode of the Income School Podcast, I set a framework for your mind to follow in starting your online business.  I explain the mindset you have to have to win.  The mindset is one of never turning back, never second guessing, never wondering.

Just going out and throwing down all out thermo-nuclear war every day until you succeed. Once you have this mindset, it will prevent you from quitting–ever.  Because failure is not an option.  Your income controls an incredible amount of your lifestyle, and you can’t risk losing that. Now that you have your head on straight, we’re getting into the nuts and bolts of online business–starting with episode 3.

Hope you enjoy the episode, Jim
