Craig Fisher is, by most accounts, one of the most influential people in the world of HR and recruiting and is a much sought-after speaker at conferences. Currently, he’s the head of recruiting innovation for Allegis Global Solutions. In this episode of The Lorne Epstein Show, Fisher talks about some of the latest innovations in digital branding. As a founder of TalentNet, he was involved in the first Twitter chats for recruiters, which took place more than 10 years ago. “Everyone would have their cocktails and we’d tweet about what they’re drinking.” And another participant would tweet out a playlist from Pandora “so that we could all listen to the same music at the same time.” The chat eventually became a podcast and “then it also became a conference,” according to Fisher.

It’s your dream job. The pay and benefits are good. But you aren’t sure about the workplace culture. What do you do? David Rivel, co-founder of PathMotion, figured the best messengers are company employees. PathMotion is a platform that allows prospective employees to engage with current employees to learn about the workplace and to hear about their career stories. David Rivel’s advice to employers is to “be open and honest and speak [to prospective employees] about the challenges” your company faces. He drives home the point that “at the end of the day when you think about employer branding” it should be “about convincing the right people that you are the employer of choice [while] repelling the wrong people.” Rivel believes authenticity is critical to these goals, and that “candidates are going to trust a company’s response with some mistakes” over “a nicely crafted corporate answer.”

In 2006, when Andrew Gadomski realized how much time companies wasted on using data analytics they didn’t understand, he founded Aspen Analytics (then known as Aspen Advisors). Now the firm’s Managing Director and Chief Advisor, Gadomski says, “We've surrounded ourselves with data so much that we naturally want to analyze it, even something as simple as how we manage our fitness, how we manage our eating habits, how we travel,” adding that “the ability to capture said data and visualize it has become a lot easier in the past decade.” He says this is the type of work most analysts do for marketing, operations, advertising around making spend decisions, making larger decisions around production. We just don't tend to do it that often in recruiting and it's harder to do in employment after someone gets hired, but the velocity of data inside recruiting is big and fast.” Gadomski says one key to successful recruiting is knowing the best time to approach people, whether it’s a job anniversary or after they received a bonus at their current job. The Wall Street Journal regularly calls on Gadomski for his on global employment and labor issues and he is a regular speaker at conferences worldwide.

Peter Hinssen is a thought leader about radical innovation, leadership, and the impact of digital on society and business. He lectures at various business schools such as London Business School (UK) and MIT in Boston. Peter founded nexxworks to help organizations thrive in The Day After Tomorrow.
Peter said, "Neither technology nor the disruption that comes with it is an exogenous force over which humans have no control. All of us are responsible for guiding its evolution, in the decisions we make daily as citizens, consumers, and investors." Peter said, "Budgets is my favorite time of the year; it is a yearly sadistic ritual where people put in fake numbers into Excel, which is consolidated into a budget which never is true."
In his book The Day After Tomorrow, Peter wants us to grasp the opportunity and power we have to shape the Fourth Industrial Revolution and direct it toward a future that reflects our common objectives and values. Peter said that "In the end, it all comes down to people and values. We need to shape a future that works for all of us by putting people first and empowering them. The Fourth Industrial Revolution may "robotize" humanity and thus to deprive us of our heart and soul. It can also lift humanity into a new collective and moral consciousness based on a shared sense of destiny. It is incumbent on us all to make sure the latter prevails."

Gioscia says their goal is “to create a good story around [a client’s] brand,” adding that “anything that makes you stand out from the crowd because right now you're dealing mostly with passive candidates.” Gioscia has worked in strategic marketing for more than 10 years, working with clients involved in health care, hospitality, retail and engineering.

To call Gerry Crispin a leader in the field of recruitment and human resources is akin to saying the sun is hot. On his LinkedIn page, Crispin describes himself as a “life-long student of hiring with a passion for conversations” about the recruiting process. Crispin and his business partner, Mark Mehler, founded CareerXroads in 1995. He has long been interested in building communities and in this episode of The Lorne Epstein Show we talk about his experience at “Burning Man,” a cultural event every summer that brings tens of thousands of people to the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada to build a community in a just a few days. He says he went to burning man “trying to figure out how to articulate better how community forms (and) what does it form around?” Crispin says every November he travels to other countries, including Japan, Eastern Europe, Cuba, and India, to “step outside…(his) box”, engaging with employers, professors, students and governments about how their communities hire and manage workers. After 50 years in the field, Crispin says he is as curious about the world as when he was a graduate student.

When an employee tells Josh Gampel, the CEO of Recruitics, that he or she is leaving the agency, he may go out and celebrate with them. Sometimes he’s happy that they have been able to use the skills they learned at Recruitics to find another job; sometimes he’s happy that someone who wasn’t a good fit for his company has found a work situation that may be a better fit. On this episode of The Lorne Epstein Show, Gampel says he believes in “purpose” on the job. “I think purpose is the key driver of everything we do.” Recruitics is a recruitment marketing agency that specializes in using data and analytics to help companies recruit more effectively by giving them a better idea of how effective their ads are. He says, “When we started the company there was a vision and a mission and a hope that we were going to become something that could make a meaningful difference.” Gampel also gets great satisfaction out of watching Recruitics employees stay with the company and advance in their careers. As an added episode bonus, Gampel and Lorne discuss some of their favorite movies.

Lorne and Abby Cheesman, co-founder and CFO of Skill Scout, talk about how you can make free videos that will engage job candidates and help them learn about your workplace by bringing jobs to life. And it’s relatively simply. Abby says all you need is “a smartphone, a microphone to get good audio, a way to stabilize your shot, and then you can produce videos that are much higher quality than you might think". Here’s one of her pro video tips: "flip your camera horizontally as it captures double the resolution." Abby says that "Candidates want to hear stories from behind the scenes; they want to see a typical day," she says. Lorne and Abby also talk about the best questions to ask employees when creating videos. Her favorite question, she says, is "what surprised you most about this job?" Abby says based on their research "people watch the video for about a minute and 36 seconds" so the stories need to be short and concise. You can email Abby at Abby@SkillScout.me to get her slides about producing inexpensive, high-quality videos for free. You can follow Abby on Twitter at @AbbyNeilson

Lauryn Sargent loves a good story. Who doesn’t? So, in 2011 she co-founded Stories Incorporated, a marketing firm that helps companies recruit by using the company’s employees to sell their workplace to job applicants. Stories uses multiple platforms, including videos and blog posts, to get the word out. The key, Sargent says, is to tell a story that is “not generic.” Sargent says they want to “highlight the moments that matter to employees”. Among those moments, she says, they ask current employees to talk about the moment they knew they made the right decision to work at that company. Sargent says they look for stories that are not about the “mechanics of the (work) day” but that reflect the company’s culture to give prospective employees a good picture of the workplace. @laurynsargent

When asked about the return on investment for diversity and inclusion, Torin Ellis says, “I tell them…that the ROI for pursuing D&I is Greater Humanity. That greater sign and then the word humanity and if that's not enough to move you then I'm not really sure what's going to move you to build better high-performing more diverse representative teams.” Torin Ellis Ellis is a Human Capital Strategist and the host of “Career Mix,” a weekly show on Sirius XM. He also runs a “progressive” boutique firm that focuses on D&I. He says, “Too many people feel like D&I is only an HR issue or D&I is only a talent acquisition issue. D&I is an issue of you and I working with one another. And if you and I…do not have the same fervor the same desire the same drive to create that inclusion and belonging…then it doesn't even matter.” Ellis also says D&I is more than an HR issue; companies need to look at every single Value Point, including supply chain, logistics, accounting, and corporate governance. @torinellis

“It always comes down to process,” according to Kara Yarnot, Vice President of Strategic Consulting Services at HireClix, a boutique recruitment advertising and consulting firm. Yarnot says “Time to fill is one of the most [evil] metrics we have in talent acquisition. The primary reason is that it actually drives the wrong behavior…” because recruiters are evaluated on how long it takes to fill a position, rather than on filling positions that are “going to have the biggest business impact.” Yarnot says HireClix focuses on evaluating the total talent acquisition process for companies because all the areas “play off each other…It always comes down to process…if your process is broken, or misaligned, it doesn’t matter what amazing technology you pick, it’s not going to solve that problem.” Yarnot has worked with a number of Fortune 50 companies, including SAIC, Boeing, and Intel, and is a frequent speaker at HR conferences. @klyarnot

George Zarkadakis leads Willis Towers Watson’s consulting practice in London on the Future of Work and the impact of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace and is a leader in digital innovation on Artificial Intelligence and analytics. For the past twenty-five years, George has been providing leadership in management consulting, media, marketing, and communications, digital strategy and innovation. George holds a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence and is the author of In Our Own Image: will Artificial Intelligence Save Us or Destroy Us. You can follow George on Twitter at
George said “automation, machines doing what humans do, only better and [using] augmentation as cognitive multipliers, [is] making us superhumans.” George continued saying that “Analytics can now predict the future, add rules and have prescriptive analytics, and tell us what the best actions are to take to have the best results.”
What questions should HR leaders ask when using AI? “How do you understand data now?” and “How do you create dashboards?” “HR leaders need to understand that data is at the heart of everything. AI is the means to derive value from the data.”
What steps should HR leaders take? “Start with a real business use case, like culture, people are leaving the company. Start with the business problem. What data do we need and where can we get it? What questions do we want this data to answer? What do I need to solve this problem in a new and innovative way quickly?”
George said that “In the past, it was hard to connect disparate data so it can speak to each other and that predictive analytics allows you to run different scenarios.” His program at Willis Towers Watson is addressing how companies are sharing data. What companies are sharing data? “Some airlines are working with hotels. Companies are working with companies in their supply chain.” George believes that “We are in the age of the humans. AI takes out things from the workplace that are boring and tedious, [AI] takes away many of the tasks to make us more human. How we relate and mentor and lead these are the things that will shape our future.”

I asked Pernille how her transition from C level executive to executive coach is going, she said “I love the life I have designed for myself. Pernille said she could not imagine what is happening now 5 years ago and that “We are facing a decade of the unknown, which can be scary and exciting.” And that her focus is to be “comfortable with this unknown.” I asked how she gets comfortable and she said: “Compassion for one another is the way to figure this out.” I asked her what has been men’s roles in the board room, she said “Men on boards and the top management are holding back men. Men are afraid of their own position in power. They think that one woman is a token and two are a conspiracy and three is a breakthrough.” She continued that “CEOs are worried about succession and including more women will mitigate this concern.”
I asked her what were some of the surprises with working with her daughter Sina and she said she knows how to “handle a lot of things and multi-tasks and has an openness to new things, they comprehend more than I did when I was at that age. They learn on their own.”

What does microlearning mean: “Micro is a methodology that maps to how the brain works, in short bites.” When I asked Leaman the best way for the brain to learn, she said “The brain is good at remembering 4 to 5 new things in one condensed period of time. Brain Attention span is about 11 minutes. The best way to train is to keep it short and convey 4 to 5 new ideas in each session.” She continued to say that “The brain needs a break. We are overwhelmed. The brain is not wired to stay alert and on to work this way.”

Janet is a networking expert both through academic research and in real-world practice, and she has recently published a book entitled Networking: Coffee not Cocktails. Dr. Shaner said “Networking is more complicated than just meeting people” “When I am new in an organization, I am not considered legitimate, so I find mentors, as I go up I have more flexibility as to have an open network and contact a whole range of people.” When I asked her what she would do first Shaner said “Ask yourself what your objective is? The answer “will tell you how to leverage your network.”
She went on to share that “If innovating is my objective, I will use the part of my network outside of my network, new thoughts.” I asked Shaner what tools you can bring to understand your network and she said “you can draw a map, look at your map and see what its characteristics to what I want to accomplish” “Your LinkedIn network may or may not be your close network. We connect on LinkedIn and don’t connect with people who are closer.”
Shaner said that “We associate networking with cocktails, one-off, transactional when you look at the research it is about building relationships and bringing energy to that relationship.”
When asked about minorities finding a mentor she said “The research shows that there are differences between men and women at the beginning of their career when you are a minority you have more difficulty. They need to go to the majority group for support or advice. Women are an example of this; they need men to mentor them.”
When asked how companies can make a difference Shaner said: “It is important for the organization to establish a culture to reward performance and deal with issues around mentoring and development of people.”
Any company looking to get in on the ground floor of quantum computing should ask itself three questions, advises Chad Rigetti, CEO of Rigetti Computing, which is building the first cloud service powered by quantum computing. 1. Does your organization use advanced computing? 2. Do you know what your unmet computing needs are? 3. If you could meet those computing needs, would it grow your top line revenue? “If the answer to three of those questions is yes, then the time to start thinking about doing something in quantum is now,” Rigetti concluded Monday at the Forbes CIO Summit in Half Moon Bay, California. On today’s show our guests will start to answer these questions. Michael Brett is Chief Executive Officer of QxBranch. QBranch is a start-up technology company solving data analytics problems for finance, insurance, pharmaceuticals, media, and energy customers worldwide. Founded in 2014, QxBranch specializes in developing algorithms for predictive analytics that support businesses with decision making on pricing, risk and user behavior. Today we continue our conversation about B-Corp and Benefit Corporation with experts Rick Alexander and Ben Garthwaite. We will touch on the differences between operating a typical corporation and B-Corp certified corporation. We will also explain what it takes to start a Benefit Corporation.
Rick Alexander has practiced law for 26 years at Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell and has been a managing partner for the last four. In 2015, he became the Head of Legal Policy at B Lab, where he is currently working as a Fellow, creating a framework to support responsible corporate ownership. Rick prepared the initial drafts of both the Delaware and the ABA model benefit corporation legislation, and is author of the first comprehensive book on benefit corporations, published in 2018. @Rick__Alexander
Ben Garthwaite is a Senior Vice President and Co-Founder of Fors Marsh Group. Fors Marsh Group is a research-first company that understands influence and measuring the way people and organizations think to make choices. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) represents Maryland’s eighth district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2016. Prior to that he served as a member of the Maryland State Senate for three terms. He has also taught constitutional law at American University’s College of Law in Washington, D.C. Jim Epstein is the Chairman of EFO Capital Management. As a philanthropist, he has been a supporter of the benefit corporation movement and has worked with non-profit groups. He is also a founder of Blue Ridge Produce in Virginia, which sells regionally gown produce to local wholesalers.
In this show, Lorne speaks with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Jim Epstein, author, entrepreneur and philanthropist, about benefit corporations, which are required by law to consider both long-term financial benefits and impact on society, including impact on workers, the community and the environment. In 2010, as a state senator in Maryland, Raskin was a sponsor of a bill establishing benefit corporations in the state. Jim Epstein has spent decades supporting mission driven investing and social entrepreneurship. One day in 2010, Raskin invited Epstein to take a walk. It was on that walk that Epstein told Raskin about benefit corporations and shortly after Maryland became the first state to pass benefit corporation legislation.
Jerome and Tracey discuss ways to capture great talent in today’s
candidate driven market. “The war for talent is over and the candidates have won,” Jerome shares. “Today is about how you attract talent to your organization with the culture and the value proposition, and how you match that talent to the needs of your business. You are marketing candidates and bringing talent in, rather than, ‘I have a job, who wants to apply?’” Tracey shares that to hire talent in today’s market, recruiters must “have a seat at the table at strategic discussions.” She offers an example of the critical role that finders of talent should be playing within companies. “If I know that we are building new production facilities–I’d like to think I have a voice, there is a talent pool–let’s build the facility there.” To make the best hires, recruiters and hiring managers need to work more closely together. In the interview, Jerome explores how new technology platforms support stronger collaboration through shared data. Instead of a relationship of, “‘Send me the resumes and they better be good ones,’ now you have both people in the system. . . . shoulder to shoulder.” It creates a culture of, “‘We work together. We will be successful together.’” Yet those in talent acquisition too often don’t have the tools and resources they need to be successful. Companies must recognize that digital technology is now fundamental to recruiting.

According to Gartner, 75% of digital transformations are going to fail.
One of the main reasons is that new technology implementations are ineffective in large part because the employees using the technology do not know HOW to use the technology, even after being trained.

This week we hear from Allison Pugh on her experiences of how people adapt to economic trends such as insecurity, commercialization, overwork, and risk impacts their relationships at work and in intimate life.
There has been a trend towards “Othering” – that is, identifying people we deem “not one of us”. We make them seem so different than ourselves, making it easier to dismiss them as being in some way less human, and less worthy of respect and dignity, than we are.
Allison Pugh is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. Her teaching and research focuses on the emotional cultures of capitalism, particularly how trends in work and inequality affect intimacy and selfhood. In 2015 she published The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity, a study on the broader impacts of job precariousness. @allison_pugh

The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated that there are now more jobs than there are working people. So why are there still so many people unemployed? How can we solve it?
A major blocker for people is the skills gap, which means many people don’t have the skills needed for today’s available jobs. There is another blocker that those of us with first world problems don’t see. There is a culture bubble that these people live in which prevents them from finding out how to get the skills they need. This is demonstrated by the students who participate in programs such as YearUp and Genesys Works.
In today’s show I speak to two experts on the subject of how to bridge the skills gap and what is happening now to get more people employed. Journalism is being attacked as “fake news” by American’s who do not believe that the media should be trusted. This is a problem for democracy. The purpose of the press is to act as a check on the power of politicians, corporations, and those with influence. They can be the linchpin to uncovering criminal and unethical behavior. Consider how the free press covered these events and brought reform and justice to government and business.
