The Pulse of AI podcast: Joining host Jason Stoughton on this podcast is Yonatan Geifman, CEO and co-founder, of Deci AI. Deci recently raised $25 million in a series B to support their ongoing R&D and go to market efforts.

As AI becomes more ubiquitous across companies systems there are two big elephants in the room: One is the black box and bias issue, which we talk about a lot on this show, and the other is the big cost of training AI models.

Solving the cost problem is a billion dollar business, which is why I had Yonatan on the show, because he believes that his company has the answer. I love what they are doing and I think you will as well.

As crypto has fallen from its previous perch high up in the atmosphere where the air gets a little thin back down here to earth where us mere mortals live it is an interesting time to say the least. Everyone is trying to figure out where we go from here. In a lot of ways this reminds me of the dotcom crash where afterwards many people walked away and said “well that whole internet thing was fun but time to get back to reality”, while others kept working at it and well we know the rest of the story, right?

So the existential question is whether or not we will look back in 5, 10 or 20 years and see this as just the beginning of a multi trillion dollar market with applications for every area of our lives, or if there is something to it, which there obviously is, but maybe the opportunity isn't as big as the hype has suggested?

To talk about and unpack all of this I invited Brad Newman from Baker McKenzie back onto the show. If you are interested in this topic than you are going to really enjoy Brad's insights.

On this podcast Jason Stoughton is joined by Brad Newman. Brad is a litigation partner at Baker McKenzie and leads the firms North America Machine Learning and AI practice and is the Chair of the American Bar Association Business and Commercial Litigation AI subcommittee.

It is hard to find a company today that does not use AI within their recruitment, screening and hiring process. It has almost become ubiquitous within the hiring industry. However, brad argues that companies are potentially putting themselves at legal risk by using these systems because bias is sometimes unintentionally built into the algorithms.

And in fact, regulatory agencies have announced that they will be taking a hard look at these practices going forward.

But interestingly, Baker McKenzie recently sponsored a survey of C-suite leaders and few felt that there was a significant risk involved with their practices around AI in recruiting and HR. So obviously there is a disconnect in the marketplace.

We unpack all of this and more in the podcast. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

As adoption of AI increases so do the concerns around potential bias in the systems. But what do we mean when we talk about bias in AI? And how do we know if our algorithms exhibit bias? And perhaps most importantly, how do we eliminate bias from our AI systems?

On my latest podcast I dig down into all of these issues with one of the foremost authorities on bias in AI, co-founder and Chief Scientist at hot AI start-up Truera, and Carnegie Mellon professor Annupam Datta.

TruEra provides the first suite of AI Quality solutions that help enterprises analyze machine learning, improve and monitor model quality, and build trust.

In many ways the future of AI depends on opening its blackbox and understanding how to make the systems fair and transparent. Failure to do this will put the brakes on AI adoption.

I believe that TruEra is positioned to be a leader in this space.

In addition, Annupam is a really smart and interesting person and I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did!

It is a hot space, they have a great bunch of people on board, they have a desire to advance AI in a very thoughtful way and they are growing fast. In my opinion this is one of the most exciting companies in the space today.

We dig down into a wide range of topics including the challenges inherent in NLP, the opportunities it presents to business leaders, how companies should look at implementing and deploying AI in their company, where NLP is going and more.

When we talk about life sciences and healthcare it really is the tale of two cities. Life sciences was an early adopter of AI and analytics and the results have been fantastic. But healthcare has been slower to the game for a number of reasons that we will talk about in this podcast.

The reality is that once AI in all of its forms is deployed across the entire healthcare ecosystem we will see lower costs, better patient outcomes and an ability to treat more people at scale. So it is important that those in AI help drive these changes as quickly as possible….for the good of society

I hope you enjoy this podcast as much I did. Let’s get to it!

LATEST PODCAST: My guest is Sean Gourley, Founder and CEO of Primer AI.

Joining me on this podcast is CEO and Co-Founder of Primer, Sean Gourley.

As you know I cover AI in all of its various forms and for me NLP is and always has been one of the most exciting areas within the field of AI. And over the past several years the advances we have seen in NLP have been phenomenal and yet business leaders are just now beginning to see the potential that NLP represents. But this is quickly changing as companies like Primer begin to release powerful yet easy to use tools that bring NLP out of the research department and place them in the hands of business users.

Primer recently released a new product line called Primer Engines. These are pre-trained engines that can be layered over your data allowing you to do the types of things that just a few years ago were plot lines in Hollywood movies.

And just as importantly, or maybe even more so, they are designed so that even non-technical business users can easily use them. What used to take months and a significant amount of investment in terms of people and money can now be done in a day. Literally. As Sean likes to say they are reducing the cost of curiosity. All of this makes his company, in my opinion, one of the most exciting players in the space.

I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.

Snorkel AI is unlocking a better, faster way to build applications With Snorkel Flow, the first truly data-centric AI platform. Snorkel AI is solving a real problem that has been holding back AI adoption by simplifying data labeling and making AI projects look more like software development efforts. Delivering both successfully will encourage companies to more fully embrace AI by removing some of the barriers and hassles that make “doing AI” so difficult.

On this podcast we talk about Braden’s journey to entrepreneurship, the origin story of Snorkel, how their approach to data labeling works and how it helps unlock the power of AI in the enterprise, why SME’s are the key to data labelling and why Snorkel’s approach empowers them, why you should drop what you are doing and immediately send in a resume and much more.

I am excited for this conversation because Snorkel AI is solving a real problem in the industry that has been holding back AI adoption and I am just really impressed with their team. In my opinion this is definitely a company to keep an eye on.

Countries are rushing to create national AI strategies that will ensure that they dominate the field of AI for the foreseeable future. This involves investing in research, fostering and encouraging partnerships between government, academia and business as well as making sure that we train our current workers, as well as our young people, in the skills they need to fill the well paying jobs of the future. AI is built on data and so we also need to find a responsible way to collect and use data which respects the privacy of US citizens while allowing breakthroughs in AI technologies. In short, we have some heavy lifting ahead of us to make sure that we get it right.

  • Embracing an AI-driven economy
  • Preparing the workforce for a transition to AI

Bret Greenstein is the Senior Vice President and Global Head of the AI & Analytics Practice at Cognizant, leading over 26,000 associates worldwide focused on Data and AI based transformation

  • How do we develop a national AI strategy that allows us to compete against countries that have different views and restrictions around the collection and use of data?
  • How should we protect data privacy?
  • How do we address bias in AI algorithms?
  • How do we encourage and develop public/private partnerships to further our national strategic AI goals?

Ever since the Covid pandemic spread across the globe many have asked the question “where is AI in this fight”? And it is a valid question because many of the techniques used in AI require large amounts of training data, which a new pandemic like Covid simply lacks.
