I will be leaving soon for my fifth visit and pilgrimage to Nepal. This is what I have to say.
s Nest Monastery -- a sacred Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhist temple located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan
s Historic North End community, a young Japanese lady walked through the door. Her name was Junko Ikuta. From the moment she arrived until the moment she departed, she left an indelible mark on our dojo, our dojo community, and on me. For the past 15 years I have thought about her often and certainly every year on May Day, my favorite holiday. After she left our dojo and Idaho we would communicate a few times a year through social media. Then one day it stopped and I heard the news... Junko left the party of life.

of 2024. This is a catch-up podcast about my most recent run at the olives for 2024. I am even discussing some of the Family Stuff that can arise with this work and the Sci-Fi overtone of the labels.
In this podcast I am share my thoughts, feelings, observations, perspectives, and contemplations about being in the middle of my decade if my 50s.
This story is simply about the changes and transformations I am feeing within myself this year, the year of the Wood Dragon 2024. This year I truly transformed in a number of ways and for a number of reasons. I can honestly say I could feel the power and energy generated by The Wood Dragon.
s North End. I have wanted to podcast about this experience and memory for quite some time. And now is the time.
These are some of my memories of Lisa Bufano. At the time she and I were both living in Boise and doing a lot of performance art. She was doing much more and more disabled performance art. She had all her fingers and legs below the knees amputated due to a staff infection from a previous surgery. A mutual artist associated recently passed away and Lisa has been on my mind a lot of late. She died about 10 years ago and I do think of her often.
This is a story about another one handed moment with children.I just got home from Winco, a grocery store here in Boise, Idaho. After paying for the food, I was waiting by the restrooms for my mother. As a young boy was leaving the "boy's room" he noticed I do not have two hands. That starting a funny, beautiful, and special one-handed moment for all.
One of the longer standing students in the Boise Dharma Center moved to Port Orchard, Washington a while back. When he proposed to his wife he asked me of bestow the wedding vows in (somewhat low-key) Buddhist wedding ceremony on a boat on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington.
When I attended Indiana University I truly wanted to expand my experience of knowledge. I did not really want good grades. I sincerely wanted to learn and grow. Therefore, I took many odd, unique, obscure, and personally challenging classes. I was also required to take two years of a foreign language. I chose to study the African foreign language of Bambara.
I have been practicing and studying the martial art of Aikido since 1997. I have been teaching Aikido since 2002. It is hard to do Aikido that long and that deeply without knowing the name of, watching the movies of, and knowing the Aikido history of Steven Seagal. I have never trained with Seagal Sensei. But I, and two of my Aikido students, did get see his as the "Mojo Priest" when he and his band came to Boise, Idaho.

It is hard to believe it has been 8 years since I began podcasting. Especially with taking almost a year off and not posting a 7-Year Anniversary podcast last year. However, here I am not and catching up!!
I took a long break. My last podcast posted on June 21, 2023. Pretty much 10 months.Life has a way of changing for us. Or should I say changing us. An old friend of mine once said, "It is funny how life gets in the way of life." But sometimes life unfolds in ways that redirect us. Many times in goods ways and in many ways there are bad times. Life took a turn for me and I simply had to stop broadcasting my podcast. Many times I wanted to record and post. But I just was not feeling it. The other times I thought I would stop podcasting all together. Even as I write this and record the podcast, I am not really sure what the future will bring or what I will do. I know I am not ready to stop broadcasting. And at the same time, I am not sure how my podcasts will evolve and transform in the moments I am here. All I can really say right now is things will be different with my podcast. This is regarding when I upload and broadcast, how often I do it, the overall length, I plan on changing the website, and of course the content. But for now... Here is podcast number 321.
This past late March and early April I returned to Nepal for my third Buddhist Pilgrimage. This year my main intention was to visit the small town of Halesi and the famous and sacred Maratika Cave. This is a very special place for Tibetan Buddhists. The journey there from Kathmandu is a minimum of three days by car both ways. But it is said to spend at least two days there which makes it a four day trip. The drive is brutal. However, a pilgrimage should not be easy.
Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment or leave some feedback.
Show Notes:
The brutal (yet beautiful) drive from Kathmandu to Halesi, Nepal. Visiting Maratika Cave. My home stay was a special blessing. Everything was better than expected. I want to return.

I came up with an idea that is not new while interacting with my mother. She wanted to do something that I thought was not worth her time. I even offered her some money not to do it. But she refused. Later that day she told she should of took what I had offered. And it that moment, the "Tin Can Theory" was coined.

Over the past three visits to Nepal I have had a number of interesting interactions with monkeys. The first year I was pretty sure I was going to have to do battle with a gang of Monkeys at Swayambhunath Stupa. Last year I saw a monkey bully a young lady and take her fruit drink. I actually saw him decide he was going to take advantage of her and then he did it. This year I saw the usual monkeys at the usual places of The Monkey Temple, within the city of Kathmandu and Pashupati Hindu Temple, and many more monkeys in Lumbini than I remember from last year. But this year I started to see the monkeys of Nepal in a different way.

I decided to spend one full day at Boudhanath Stupa. Most of my time in Kathmandu and at my hotel (near Boudhanath Stupa) was usually in "home base" mode. Meaning I am generally spending a number of hours at Boudhanath but not all day. I typically leave to go to the Monkey temple, to shop in the Thamel District, or am off to visit one of the many Buddhist sites in the city or in a small city close by. I am either waking up to do practice at Boudhanath, or I leave for the Swayambhunath in the morning and return for the afternoon, or I am gone most of the day and swing by late night for my night time practice. After spending 5 days on the road visiting municipality (city) of Halesi and the Maratika Caves, the city of Timal and Yarinak Cave, and the famous Stupa in the city of NamoBuddha, I was ready for a day of non-travel rest. This meant I was going to spend a full day at Boudhanath Stupa practicing, shopping, and site seeing. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment or leave some feedback.Show Notes: I finally spent one full day at Boudhanath Stupa. It felt good not to get into a taxi for that one day. There are times indeed when traveling to remote Buddhist locations in small villages that Western conveniences fail to exist. Or at least in the way we want them to. These are the simple things like coffee, a soft bed, heat, and a hot shower. This year I traveled to the small village of Halesi, Nepal to visit the caves of Maratika. I went five days with no shower. Well, I was able to take a shower. Or at least get close to something I can call a "shower." This was a shower in a bag. Pilgrimage should not be easy. Not having a shower was only one part of this 5 day trip. It was certainly an experience worth podcasting. Thanks for listening! A sitting toilet is not very common in the general public space of Nepal. And certainly not outside the city of Kathmandu. This means there is a lot of squatting and pooping in Nepal. Additionally, there is a cultural non-use of toilet paper. Also, public bathrooms tend to be pretty gritty overall and the desire to put one's bag or backpack on the floor does not exist. Therefore, it takes a bit of work drop the pants, squat, and poop. Did I mention that soap is not a commonly found liquid in Nepal's (hard to find) public bathrooms. Add the one handed thing to this process and we have a podcast worth sharing. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment or leave some feedback.Show Notes: Squatting and pooping is the main theme in Nepal. Most public bathrooms are very gritty and unsanitary. There is no desire to put one's bag or backpack on the floor in most bathrooms. Toilet paper and soap are not common (if at al all found) in Nepals public bathrooms. An interesting thing has started to unfold in Kathmandu, Nepal. I had a similar experience in Tibet. However, I am starting to use this "trick" more and more in Nepal. This most recent visit had this gestured interaction truly take hold for me. I call it the "Beggar's Pass." It is a one handed thing and worthy of a podcast. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment or leave some feedback.Show Notes: So much of this gestured interaction is the result of the cultural perception of one handedness in Nepal. This will be my third pilgrimage visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. Each time I go I have very unique one handed experiences based on the Nepali cultural perception of not having two hands. Most of the time it is not a big deal. But sometimes it kinda is a big deal. Either way it is good practice in not clinging to what other people think. And it makes for some pretty un and enjoyable experiences. (Here are five short one handed stories from Kathmandu, Nepal. (And maybe a bonus 6th super story.)Thanks for listening! In transition and floating from airport to airport with many layovers going from Boise, Idaho USA to Kathmandu, Nepal. Way back in the early 90s during my "Seattle Days" I earned the nickname of King Floater. I was sleeping on people's couches and working full time waiting to leaving Seattle for Boise. I cannot say I was homeless but I was certainly in vagabond mode. The nickname came about when a person I did not know well put me up for about 3 weeks. As an authorized Dharma Teacher and long-time leader of the Boise Dharma Center, I have been called upon for some of life's bigger moments. I have bestowed wedding vows and married couples. I have been asked to speak and eulogize at people wakes and funerals. My name is on a list at my local hospital if someone wants to speak with a Buddhist. I have a few very clear memories of Jimmy Carter. Not so much his actually presidency. It was all the fervor and excitement leading up to his election. When I was in the first few years of primary school, something extremely uncomfortable happened to me and another student born with disabilities. I attended St. John The Baptist, a private Catholic Elementary (grades 1 to 8) school in South Bend, Indiana. When I look back on it I can understand the intention of what they were doing. It does seem like they were trying to do good. However, it was incredibly uncomfortable for me as a one handed very young child. That experience had an impact on me then and still does in some way now. I say this because the experience is one of my early memories of one-handedness that I have never forgotten and comes up in my thinking enough to notice. Seems like a good topic for a podcast. Thanks for listening! The beginning of twenty years seems so long. At the end of twenty years, the time passed seems so short. Such a milestone is twenty years of anything. For me it is twenty years of doing Aikido (a bit longer) and teaching Aikido. Twenty years (also a bit longer) employment at the Bureau of Reclamation. Twenty years since my father passed away. Twenty years (more like twenty three) a Buddhist in both the Rinzai Zen and Tibetan Dzogchen Vajrayana. All this arose when I realized I have been a direct student of Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche and Tibet Buddhism for twenty years. Twenty years... What a milestone!!

What an amazing week of family, reunions, and a beautiful wedding. It was such a much better time than I had expected.
I had no idea the olive business was so tough. This year was a mad scramble of uncertainty as we tried to find an olive dealer who had them in stock and who would ship the olives.
Family matters... As does the matters of a family. This week I am heading back to Indiana for a family reunion and to attend my brother's son's wedding. I have not really seen a lot of my extended family in an incredibly long time.
I have been looking at a number of more comfortable mouse options at work. This Logitech mouse is really making a difference in my one-handed life.
I have been riding my bicycle to work a couple of times a week these past few months. It has been a bit more challenging than I thought it would be.
As I was watching her make one of her favorite meals, I was reminded of the story she loves to tell about growing up in Oaxaca, Mexico eating grasshopper tacos. Yes, I said it... "Grasshopper Tacos!" Also known as "Chapulines." There are a prominent part of life where my mother grew up.

This year when I went back to Nepal for my second visit and Buddhist Pilgrimage, I was speaking to a local who told me Nepal just passed a law allowing non-residents to own a condo.
Seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers live in concert in California this past weekend was worth the wait. I grew up with this band in the soundtrack of my life. I had a most incredible experience. And they opened up with the song I wanted to hear the most!!
I am going to see and hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers live in concert in California!! This is a life long concert dream about to come true!
So I almost got stranded in Kathmandu, Nepal after my Buddhist Pilgrimage was completed. At the time I was returning from abroad back to the USA, a negative Covid Viral Test (CVT) was required to to return and enter the United States.
"From the beginning..." is a phrase describing being born with only one hand. I heard for the first time in Kathmandu, Nepal while I was in Nepal this year on my Buddhist Pilgrimage.
Just a quickie podcast about my last couple of days in Nepal. In my last days in Kathmandu, Nepal I actually started to feel like a tourist... And it felt pretty good.
This short story is about a short conversation a one handed guy struck-up with me a couple of days ago about his life, and all the physical pain he has been experiencing since he lost his hand in a car accident.
This question came up many times and I have been telling these stories since I returned. I had dinner with a good friend today in Boise and I shared these interactions and my response of, "I am not a tourist. I am a pilgrim."
There are usually all kinds of scams being run no matter where you go in the world. Especially if you are a "tourist." And certainly in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The one handed thing in Nepal is a thing! I get a lot of stares and looks of contemplation. Sometimes it is confusion. Other times my one-handedness bring people into shocked self consideration.
I think it is so interesting, cool, and special I would such sweet experiences with children right as I am walking away from of the most sacred places for Buddhist in Nepal.
I have finally arrive back in Kathmandu, Nepal. It is the 2022 and I have returned for my second pilgrimage.
Today's podcast celebrates my 5 year anniversary with a short story that happened today and a thank you to all my listeners and supporters.
Last week I went back to a routine I did almost everyday before the pandemic. "It's been two years" was the phrase I heard a lot that day.
I love May Day!! What can I say? It is my favorite Holiday. In the year 2000 I had my first May Day Celebration in my back yard
I have spoken about the differences between how little boys and little girls respond to me and my one-handedness.
After "Pandemic-ing" for the past two years and staying at home "quarantining," like most of the world, I have purchased a plane ticket back to Nepal.
It takes a different kind of effort and process to get back into shape after 50 years of age and 15 months of injury.
As we entered the security screening area I noticed "Hotel California" playing on over the sound system. That is all I needed to hear!!
I am now starting to experience long periods of time without an extreme pain in either arm!! After 14 months, this is a welcome experience.
One of the many hard things about having arms that hurt so much is the difficulty getting dressed. It was hard to tie my shoes, buckle my belt, and put on a jacket.
I totally was shocked and surprised to see on March 10th of this year (just a few days ago), Nepal opened up to tours with a negative covid test with no restrictions. Additionally, you can also get you visa to enter the country at the airport after you land.
This is just another slice of my life podcast. This one kinda revolves around me being hurt, the war on Ukraine, the pandemic, quarantining, and how all that affects my mother.
What now? World War 3? I have heard so many people say the phrase "World War 3" since Russia invaded the Ukraine.
Something happened to my left arm. I have been in sone extreme pain. It does not move well and hurts when I lift, rotate in both directions, and press it against my body.
This is an interesting situation for a one-handed guy. I am trying to have fun seeing how much I can do without using my right hand so much and only using my left arm.
"Drive like you are in China." This is my daily driving mantra right now. With all the craziness in the world, driving with more of a mediative quality is making a huge difference.
This month I will be undergoing a small medical procedure on my right arm. Since I only have one hand, there will be very little I will be able to do on my own. I am not really ready for that!!
I am offering this very short and spontaneous podcast as the first day of 2022 comes to a close for me.
The Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Church of Bones is one of the most unusual chapels you will ever see. I had the great fortune of spending a full day there when I was in Europe on a professional speaking and dharma teaching tour.
When I was about 10 years riding the big yellow school bus to school with all my friends, we would see this middle-age woman bicycle commuting to work.
2021... What a year it has been. Certainly some of the most crazy times in the past 100 years some would say.
Here is a "slice of life" podcast about how I am feeling right now in these current crazy times.
This a a feel-good short story about the time at my 3 Shapes Aikido dojo made the UPS Guy feel like a million bucks.
The olives are all pressed and jarred. We have 82 jars total split in 16, 8, and 4 ounce jars of three different flavors.
To experience large amounts of pain on a consistent and long term basis has been quite the life experience and lesson.
In my home growing up we watched a lot of Television and we cooked a lot of food as Family Traditions.
One night I went out to a casino to shoot a bit of dice. What happened on that dice table can be considered a miracle!!
After a 5-day 1600 miles round trip rode trip to get raw olives, all I have done in my spare time is crack and pit olives, look for the supplies we need to process this amount, and try to live in an apartment that now looks like an olive factory.
A simple interview with my mother about why we drove 1600 miles roundtrip to pick up 100 pounds of raw olives.
Right now it is Tuesday night, October 12th. As I get ready to upload this podcast I am also preparing to go on "An Olive Road Trip" with my mother.
Since I do not have a two handed way of thinking in a two handed world, I can think more freely and creatively about solutions.
This is a story about the true joy of laughter with good friend and its healing qualities.
This podcast is about a night I spent in Cesky Krumlov. This is a small tourist city of about 30,000 people. It is famous for its 13th century castle and 17th century Baroque theater.
A most fantastic day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with some friends of a one-hand guy (Raj) I meet online.
A most fantastic day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with some friends of a one-hand guy (Raj) I meet online.
It is amazing what can happen at the moment of birth. For me there was something there that had an impact on me.
I was thinking about the Dalai Lama. Then my thoughts jumped to this young girl in my old martial art school. Then I thought of Aikido and my old dojo. Then I thought of the history of how she came to the dojo.
When there is a "free day," my thinking opens and expands in areas I normally cannot engage. The more creative part of my mind has some breathing room. I think thoughts supported by thinking not pressured by the weight of daily life. It is in these timeframes when I have a lot of random one handed thoughts.
Sometimes people stare at me. In fact, it happens often. I have gotten so many types of stares and "looks," I have noted then in numerous podcasts.
I had to visit the dentist today. Not my favorite place to visit. This was my quarterly visit for cleaning. It always hurts.
Here is a short, funny, and certainly one of the craziest moments and questions I have been been asked and had in a bar in Boise, Idaho.
I had many a wild nights at this place drinking and doing other other miscellaneous drugs. But this one night toped them all.
One of the benefits of isolation due to the pandemic was a more-than-appropriate amount binge watching science fiction. And I do mean a lot.
Born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico my mother would tell us stories of her childhood eating grasshopper tacos. We found a connection here in Idaho and now I eat grasshoppers!

A common question asked to people is, "if you could change anything about your body what would that be?" This is a question I get asked not so often. I think people are concerned they might offend me.
For as long as I can remember I have always been a fan of belt buckles. The funny thing is putting on a bely buckle with one hand can be a bit more challenging than one would thing. Who would have thought belt buckles and one handedness had a a funky quirky relationship?
Not much I can do when you pass to my left side. Such a weird and true occurrence in my life. Though I must say it does not happen too often.
This story is about the lengths Deadheads will go to sneak drugs into a Grateful Dead Show.
This week I am going to break down the movements that cause a lot of pain in my arm regarding my Tennis Elbow. It is very simple and straight forward. Three words... Life. Pull. Squeeze.
I have not said much these past few months regarding my extreme tennis elbow. Of course, having just the one hand does not give my arm time to rest as I have to do everything with this one hand.
One late night in my apartment upstairs after all my classes were taught I was sitting very still. It was then I noticed a mouse casually walking across my living room into the kitchen.
This past week a friend from my childhood asked me if I would podcast on why I am a Buddhist. So I did.
Once, after a late night movie, I came around the corner of a street walking to my car. I noticed two people noticing me as I approached. Then one of them said, "I would know that silhouette anywhere!"
One of the first jobs I had in Seattle, Washington at a group home for mentally disabled people. I created a very special bond with the residents during my short employment that left a life-long lasting impression on me.
Today I had to get a Covid-19 test. It is an interesting process to actually get set up for the test. It is also a unique process trying to decide in my head to get a test.
Once in Tibet at a large Buddhist gathering at one of the Sakya Monasteries I made a connection with a local lady. She wore a very beautiful mask. We noticed one another. We only had non-verbal communication and it was for a very short time. But I have never forgotten the girl in the mask.
This short podcast is really about my one handed contemplations regarding how much my right arm has been hurting me.
"You never complain," was what my mother said to me. It was her body language that expressed so much more.
Yes it is true. I almost cut my hand off. I was not paying enough attention while using and holding a very shape knife. I just remember hearing a unique sound. A sound I would later realize was the sound of a knife cutting through human flesh.
Offering a part two relating to Podcast OHS 189 about the large amount of pain in my right arm.
Despite being one of the craziest and most bizarre years of my life 2020 had a number of bright spots.
When I was in my late teens and early twenties I knew my spine would be affected by the unevenly developed muscles on each side of my upper body.
It is true. I bit my middle fingernail off. Not in the way you might imagine. Not all at once in some crazed fervor of self torture by a temporarily insane one handed man. No no... this was a bit more long and drawn out. This is the result of a bad habit.
This is a story about cheating. When I was younger I often engaged in the act of cheating.
Life with one hand is certainly a rollercoaster of experiences and emotions. When I was younger I had many extremely ugly experiences feeling the discrimination of others.
One not-so-great quality to the going-online global pandemic situation is there are now way too much stuff to be a part of and attend online.
This is just a funny and martially humorous story that happened to me while I was on a medical mission in Tibet in 2017.
My early love of military and the armed forces has led to many a great one handed experiences.
Often people I meet ask me what happened to my hand. These interactions have a flavor all on their own. It is a more detailed and refined view of other people's perception of why I am the way I am.
Some one handed moments changed my life in beneficially profound ways. Others are hard to forget because they had such a horrific negative impact on my life. Some are just funny and enjoyable.
What would you do? What would Buddha do? What would Jesus do? What would anyone do is the question?
All the things we do not know about how and why we interact with the internet and social media are the things we should know.
It is the day-to-day moments that can truly make having one hand enjoyable. Especially around Halloween and when children are present.
I often tell people there is not a day that goes by when I am in public and I do not get some kind of interaction with children because of my one handedness.
I believe miracles happen everyday. Big miracles and little miracles. One reaction I get when children see me or someone like me for the first time is sadness. Time to activate miracle powers!
I am always hoping when I hear the phrase, "we're looking for a one armed guy," it does not mean what it meant the last time I heard it. I want it to be asked by the film crew of Star Wars because they need extras as Jedi Knights in the next movie.
Traveling If you were ever going to take advice about how to ride a bicycle one handed, it would be wise to listen to that advice from a one handed bicyclist. I have had too many friends and met too many people with chipped teeth do to riding a bicycle one handed.
When I was a child I did not truly understand what it meant to have one hand in a two handed world. One of my early dreams was to play the Saxophone. As much as I expressed my want and desire to play the Saxophone my parents signed me up for Trumpet lessons.
"Can you give me a ride?" As odd as this may sound I do get asked this question more than you would think.
This is a personal contemplation about the life long costs of buying prosthetic arms and my my perception of those costs. I am mostly referring to my parents and how they were able to buy my artificial arms.
Here is part #2 of my story for this week. This half is more about my excitement in getting my old prosthetic arm upgraded and potentially about getting a brand new arm. I kinda feel like a young boy about to get a new toy.
Three years deep and still going strong! This is my 3rd Anniversary celebration podcast. It was May 19, 2017 that my first podcast hit the airways. I have been putting out a podcast a week for the past three years and have truly enjoyed myself while sharing my stories (mostly) about my one handed life. I have also learned many things about who I am and how I share my life. Additionally, I hope you, the listener, have enjoyed, learned, and laughed along the way. For this podcast I am going to keep it simple and kind of short with a story in there about a recent interaction with a 5 year-old and her family I recently met at the park. I will also share some of my visions for where I will be taking the One Hand Speaks Storytelling Podcast. Changes in the production, the stories, and the direction of my one handed podcast. I might even give some thanks and shout-puts and maybe even drink a beer.
Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment or leave some feedback.

I have destroyed countless Zip Fly buttons on my blue jeans over the span of my one handed life. Those are the buttons at the top of jeans that keep the fly fastened. It took a moment of contemplation just before standing in front of a toilet to realize an interesting truth about my one handed life.
Traveling a planet of over 7 billion people with countless countries and I run into this same person twice is the most unique of places. I love solo international travel. There is such a beautiful possibility to meet all kinds of people from all different places and cultures. Not just the people who live in a particular country. But also the people who are also traveling from other countries. It is one of the true joys for me as an international traveler of one. I recently returned from a two week trip to Nepal. While I was there I had some very interesting encounters. A person I know from my home town of Boise, Idaho. A lady I met once at a dinner in Malaysia in 2014. Two different guys who saw me online who were also in Nepal. But then there was this one lady who I could not believe we saw each one another again along our travels. First in the United States. Then a few years later in an isolated area of Eastern Tibet. Then just six weeks ago in a small town in Godawari, Nepal. Such a small world for such a big planet.

We are all learning things about ourselves living with this global coronavirus pandemic. One thing I have heard a number of people say is, "I cannot believe how many times a day I touch my face." For me and my one handed life I must say it is how many things I put in my mouth and use my mouth to do things. I have become so aware of how often I use my mouth as a substitute for the left hand I do not have. We do not pay as much attention to something we do all the time until we cannot do it. Touching our face, staying inside, and keeping 6 feet apart are just a few of the things. I use my mouth to hold things, to open bags of potato chips or candy, and even to help zip up my coat. One day I realized when I was about to use my mouth to manipulate something, my one-handed life can make me more prone to get "The Rona!"

I arrived back from Nepal on March 14, 2020 and the United States was making extreme Covid-19 social changes. Two weeks earlier (when I left for Nepal) the feeling in the United States was a "not-so-concerned-about-the-Coronavirus." All that changed incredibly fast. I cannot express how weird it was to leave under one social consciousness only to return to the frenzy of transitioning in a global pandemic restructure. Three days before leaving Nepal I heard the United States was starting catch up to the pandemic situation after a late start. Then three days after arriving the entire Federal Bureau I am employed with went into "Max Telework" status. We are not allowed to gather in groups, large events are being canceled, activities are going online video, and we all are in a "stay-at-home" quarantine day to day lifestyle.
I recently met a good friend of mine and we discussed the current coronavirus situation. We had a very candid conversation in the backseat of his car. We went to get some coffee and decided to record what we think about what is going on right now in our worlds.

When I was departing the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal I had a one-handed experience with a number of Nepalese people. As I have done a bit of international travel I have podcasted and spoken about a number of positive experiences. I have also spoken about some somewhat negative experiences based on a nation's cultural perspective of my one-handed life. International travel with one-handed life has shown me many different aspects of many cultures. It is one of the great qualities about living life with one hand, I get to see a side of people and a culture most people do not see.
Amidst the current global pandemic I recently spent the first two weeks of March 2020 traveling, shopping, and engaging in Buddhist pilgrimage activities in Kathmandu, Nepal. My flight was at 11:30 pm in the evening. I was a tired from my travels and a bit haggard with the Covid-19 overtone. Not to mention I was carrying home more than I came to Nepal. I was a bit disorganized and not well packed with something special happened to me as I entered the final security line in the Kathmandu airport.

Kathmandu, Nepal is a beautiful city. But as one local girl was telling me, "There is no shortage of grit in Kathmandu!" She said this to me while slightly laughing with a tone of experienced acknowledgement. She was a local who grew up in Nepal and was a friend of a friend of a friend. She wanted to show me a bit of the "real" Kathmandu. As we were eating she asked me what I thought of Kathmandu. I told her it was a beautiful city and culture especially being Buddhist. But after spending four days in the Thamel area, I told her that, "Kathmandu can be a little bit 'gritty' at times." That is when she laughed and said what she said.
This podcast is about some of the uncool and "gritty" experiences I had in Kathmandu. Overall I had a great time and felt very safe. And in general I am a very positive person and look for the good in all situations and people. However, some weird experiences did happen and they are kind of funny and therefore worth sharing. I thought it best to put them all in one podcast.

Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal is so much different at night than in the day time. I had a very uncomfortable experience with a Tibetan beggar at Boudhanath Stupa An enraged young woman who seemed mentally unstable almost hit me with a huge piece of concrete. I was almost attacked and assaulted by monkeys on two occasions at Swayambhunath Stupa AKA The Monkey Temple.

Basically I heard this was the Monkey Temple for good reason. There are a lot of Monkeys at this stupa/temple. I visited Swayamdhunath Stupa the day after I first visited Boudhanath Stupa and booked my next three nights at the Bodhi Guest House. Once I arrived at this temple I knew this was something special about this temple. So much so I thought I should get a hotel on near this location because I know I would be spending a great deal of time in at this holy Buddhist stupa. In the end I realized my best place to stay is near Boudhanath Stupa and at the Bodhi Guest House Hotel. The Monkey Temple is so much different than Boudhanath Stupa. It is more than the monkeys. It is the energy, the people and the general size of the complex. I was completely stunned by it all. The more I go the deeper I go into the coolness of Swayambhuanth Stupa. There is something very special for me at this temple. I knew it the first time I arrived. Each time I go this realization is only deepened. Despite staying near the Boudhanath Stupa I have actually spent more time at the Monkey temple.

Show Notes:
Known as the Monkey Temple, it is the oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples in Nepal. I spent most of my time at this temple. It is much larger than most people know and is worth exploring. The monkeys can be very aggressive. But when they not, they are very cute and human like.

In March of 2029 I spent 14 days in Kathmandu, Nepal. My original intention was to go there for a week long Buddhist retreat with my Buddhist Teacher, Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche. However, due to the increasing spread of the Covid-19 virus around the world my retreat was canceled. I had already paid for the entire trip and booked the needed flights and hotel stay. I would lose about the same amount of money I would spend if I canceled my flight or if I went. In the end it did not take me long to decide to go on a solo Buddhist Pilgrimage to Nepal despite the (at that time) increasing situation with the now global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus. This trip was an experience I will never forget and I am so glad I. decided to go. I left the United States at just the right time (February 29) and I was able to return at just the right time (March 14). I am looking forward to visiting again.
