For the people hearing this, family meant everything: identity, security, and belonging. Yet Jesus calls us to put Him above all else.
This message challenges us to ask: are we truly following Jesus, or just a comfortable version of Him that never disrupts our lives? Following Christ fully may bring tension, but the promise is worth it. Whatever we lose here, we gain eternally in the Father’s house, where our true belonging, identity, and inheritance are found.

In John 6, Jesus says, “eat my flesh and drink my blood,” not to promote cannibalism, but to show that He is our source of true life. Just as our bodies need food and water, our souls need Jesus daily, not as an occasional supplement, but as our sustenance.
The sermon compares our physical need for nutrients to our spiritual need for God’s presence, prayer, and Scripture. Studies even show that engaging with Scripture four or more times a week reduces loneliness, anger, and spiritual stagnation while deepening community and faith.

Like Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, unbelief can limit what we experience, but humble, unwavering faith opens the door for God to move.

This exploration of forgiveness highlights one of Christianity’s hardest teachings: forgiving without limits. In Matthew 18:21–22, Peter suggests forgiving seven times, but Jesus responds “seventy times seven,” meaning forgiveness should have no limit. Forgiveness reflects God’s character and is both a spiritual command and a path to healing, reducing anxiety, anger, and depression while increasing hope.
Biblically, forgiveness means letting go, intentionally releasing bitterness and surrendering hurt to God. It doesn’t mean denying harm, removing consequences, or reconciling. Instead, it’s choosing not to hold someone’s offense against them. Holding onto unforgiveness, however, only harms us, like drinking poison and expecting someone else to suffer.

The call is to identify your “one thing” what you’d struggle to give up, and begin releasing it. Surrender isn’t instant; it’s a process of grace, choosing daily to let go of what competes with God.

Original created design for people is to represent God’s will and way to His creation. Choosing our way over God’s way changes the order of life. The mission of Jesus saves…delivers people from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of God, and destroys the devils works in our lives. The saved are sent to live their lives with Kingdom authority to spread the kingdom of God to other people and places. Brings us full circle, back to representing God’s will and way. Jesus promised that His followers would come full circle back. John 14:12 says “…anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works because I am going to be with the Father.” We can multiply Kingdom works all over the world spreading His kingdom rule. God wants to take our broken life… restore us to His purpose to show the world His will and way in Christ.

We begin a new study, examining the backstory of John Mark. He is mentioned about a dozen times in the New Testament but we don’t know very much about him. But his path to get there has a lot to teach us about our potential and making our own mark in life.

This week we wrap up our study in Ruth. Chapter 4 details the actions of Boaz to be the family redeemer, restoring life and hope to Naomi’s family. Today we wrap up our stuck study on the life of Joseph. For this last message we will look at Joseph’s journey toward getting unstuck from some of the hurt in his past. Previously, he thought that he had put this matter to bed (Gen 41:51) but seeing his brothers again caused hurt to resurface. This is the third week in our Joseph study called Stuck. This week will analyze the part of his story that shows him settling into his life in Egypt. We’ll refer to this season as being “stuck with a new normal.” Sometimes life throws us a curve and we end up where we end up. For Joseph that was in Egypt – a place he never imagined being with people he didn’t want to be with. But as we observe his life, we see how gave himself, even in Egypt, to serve a higher purpose. This is week 2 in our series on the life of Joseph and we will be studying the cycles of betrayal and injustice that lead to him to encounter extreme disappointment. There is no clearer indication of that, than how Genesis 40 concludes by saying that Joseph had been “forgotten.” When we are stuck in disappointment we feel forgotten. However the Midrash (Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament) states about Joseph: “You may have forgotten him, but I the Lord have not.” In light of that certain fact, we want to focus on some ways that we can redirect our hope and faith to the Lord in times of disappointment. We’ll land on a few practical things we can do to be faithful in those seasons of distress.

Today we focus on Joseph’s dream (Gen 37) and learn about being “stuck with a promise.” The Bible offers over 7,000 promises from God to us. Nothing can burn brighter in our heart than to have a hopeful promise to cling to. But, the heart can become sick when hope feels deferred (Proverbs 13:12). From the opening of Joseph’s story we are going to learn how to handle promises with humility – giving God the room to fulfill promises in His way, in His time, and in His strength.

This Sunday we are exploring the difficult truth of Psalm 23:5 which deals with living our lives for God “in the presence of our enemies.” That means we have, and will have enemies – people who oppose and attack us. Across Scripture there are some different responses toward our enemies that are mentioned; but as followers of Jesus we have a high and holy obligation to follow in His steps and live a “laid down life.” That doesn’t mean we are indifferent, weak, or a doormat for those who oppose us, but that we practice a life habit of trusting God to deal with our enemies and make the powerful choice to extend grace to them.

Even though there’s a lot about this passage that is familiar, we are making new discoveries and finding fresh ways to make this Scripture useful in everyday life. Today our section of Psalm 23 brings us to a much-needed conversation about valleys, low points in life. When you envision “valleys” maybe you think in terms of serene valleys with lush landscapes which is often the visual subject of a Bob Ross painting. But valley references in the Bible, especially those mentioned by David in Psalm 23, are rugged, shadowy, dangerous places.

In week 3 of our PS 23 study, we focus on vs 3 and the crucial pivot point every believer faces - will we trust in the Lord by allowing Him to lead us through life. As Psalm 23 promises, the Good Shepherd will revive us and get us back on our feet so that we can follow Him down the right paths. We’ll isolate the first half of verse one and concentrate on the meaning of “the Lord is my Shepherd.” We will take a cue from one of my favorite resources on Psalm 23 a classic written by Phillip Keller “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.” As a career shepherd and someone who knows what it takes to care for sheep, he challenges us to answer the question: “Does the Lord have adequate credibility to by my shepherd?” As we track some of the roots of the Psalm aligned with the revelation of Jesus, we’ll discover that He surely is a praiseworthy shepherd!

Because if we don’t, who are we going to tell we don’t have room for you?” Today, August 21 is an important day for Turning Point because we are kicking off an important initiative called Making Room. Making Room is an initiative through the end of the year to take some action steps to make room for more people at Turning Point.

When brokenness happens, it can be a shock to our system. One thing that can result from the disorientation of brokenness is getting stuck in the pain, held in place by the disappointment. Like a commonly experienced nightmare…we can’t move, can’t scream. We’re just there, a victim of our brokenmess. But from the story of Jonah, we will learn some actions we can take to help us move forward out of our brokenmess.

Take a hard honest look at why brokenness occurs with the goal of understanding what to do when it happens. From Hebrews 12 we’ll see how Jesus pressed through the brokenmess of the cross to get to the other side. So we need to gain a fresh level of confidence from Hebrews 4:12-13 and recognize that we are increasingly accountable for incorporating the living and powerful Word of God into some of our conversations.

During this three part mini-series “Why Not Me?” we are looking at some ways to train our faith family on what to do to make a ministry impact in someone’s life. These are “easy” and accessible things we all can do. This week our focus is on practicing hospitality. While that sounds like something out of a page of a Martha Stewart book, there are actually several commands and examples given across the New Testament of how people can be impacted by simply opening our home and heart to people. But admittedly, things have changed a little since Biblical times. However the mandate to practice hospitality hasn’t been lifted. May is National Fostering Month and we wanted to have a Sunday to feature the ongoing work of SAFE – our in-house ministry that supports adoption and fostering efforts. Psalm 68:5 says: “God sets the lonely in families.” That divine work includes seeing spiritual orphans brought into God’s forever family and the cause of the fatherless in our world. We will be challenged to consider specific actions steps in taking up that cause.

We finished up Elijah’s story last week, but we’re going to put a punctuation on the series by reflecting on one of the New Testament points of emphasis on Elijah. We will breakdown the role of Elijah as a forerunner of the Messiah. Jesus clearly pointed out that John the Baptist plays a role in that. But there is a question about whether he fully assumed all of that responsibility. While it is certain that John was a voice to announce readiness for the coming of the Lord, there is an open door for who might be a future forerunner for the return of Christ. Who might step into that space and be a witness to the coming of the Lord?

This is the last chapter of Elijah’s story. As many of you may know, he was one of only two people to never die but go straight to heaven from life on earth. His exit was pretty spectacular. There is clearly an effort by the Scripture writer to draw attention to the event surrounding his “translation” to heaven. So while our eyes are on that unusual event, there’s a pretty important point of revelation happening with Elisha who is left behind. There’s an important feature in this hand off of prophet to protégé – he has to “pick up” the mantle. We are going to make some observations about living with our own degree of readiness to pick up the things God has for us to do.

As we are winding down our study of Elijah, we are going to reflect on one of his final chapters – time spent in leaving a legacy of faith for others. One of the most disappointing passages of Scripture is found in Judges 2 and it records that “a generation arose who did not know the LORD or recognize His works.” If there is anything that would break a mother’s heart, it would be seeing a generation come after her that doesn’t know her God and is unfamiliar with the kinds of things that the Lord has done for her in her lifetime. From Elijah we want to learn about leaving a legacy of faith. We want to gain a new vision of our life race…one that includes not just reaching the finish line but hands the baton of faith to others so that they can run the race God has set before them.

In week 10 of our study of Elijah, we learn to walk in the supernatural by following the playbook of Elijah. Elijah soaked in the presence of God and sought the provision of God because God always provides for his people. There is a supernatural spiritual war going on in our lives and our world. Week 9 in our Elijah study brings us across one of the strangest and goriest parts of the prophet’s life and work. 1 Kings 21 details a conspiracy for murder and theft, along with God’s harsh penalty for the sinful actions of the king and queen of Israel. These are individuals who have seen the miracles and heard the messages of the prophets but they have “stiff necks” and won’t surrender to God’s way. We are going to dial into how people can ignore and disregard the things God is trying to teach them with an emphasis on keeping our hearts tender and responsive to the prompting, direction, and conviction to instruction the Lord is offering.

In 1 Kings 17, Elijah faced an impossible situation, bringing life back to a dead son. As far as we can tell, there had never been anyone before Elijah to see someone brought back from the dead. Without a blueprint or instruction manual to follow, Elijah did something strange – he laid on the lifeless boy and prayed. That is a very weird prayer posture! But it reveals something important that marks a huge difference in this event and the one we celebrate this weekend.

Today we are continuing our study on the life of Elijah. There’s a trend in entertainment called the reboot…when a past program gets another run. Elijah took a serious downturn in his life. Both debilitating depression and a spiritual attack brought Elijah down. But in the spirit of a reboot, God wasn’t done with Elijah. He gets a reboot, a second act.

In this week’s study of Elijah we find out that this extraordinary prophet is an ordinary person and hits rock bottom in his life. It will be surprising for people to see this hero suffering with a significant bout of depression and sinks to a low point in life. There are several lessons we will pick up about hitting rock bottom in our own lives, but we’ll make no greater observation that how Jesus shows up and offers amazing affection and support to Elijah. We will learn with fresh wonder how Jesus will be there for us in life’s low spots. I have a deep suspicion this will be life altering for some who feel down, forgotten, beat down, and heavy hearted.

As we continue our study of Elijah, this week we’ll take a closer look at how to operate in the prophetic. Rather than this being a weird and/or a select practice for a few, operating in the prophetic is a grace afforded to every willing follower of Jesus. Operating in the prophetic is about speaking into people’s lives and situations with inspired truthfulness that encourages, brings clarity, and invokes the faithfulness of God’s promises. From Elijah’s life and example we’ll learn how to increase our spiritual sensitivity and become persistent in speaking and praying the promises of God.

Surrounding Elijah's life is some of the most incredible stories loaded with the most crucial lessons for navigating life: courageously, prophetically, supernaturally. Up until now, we have seen God preparing Elijah for an epic battle, as we come to week 4 in our study of Elijah.

In Week 3 of Days of Elijah we learn that Elijah needs refining. Maybe we don’t see it, but the Lord doesn’t see things the way we do. The Lord sees in Elijah and knows what needs refining. His heart and his faith have some impurities and a refining fire is needed to purge his resentment. When God switches our seat, sometimes He is heating things up so that our hearts and our faith can be refined.

In week 2 of our Elijah study, we will circle back to take in Elijah’s prophetic challenge (“no dew or rain…until I give the word!”) and trace what happens next – that God leads him to a purposeful place where is cut off from all others and isolated where the Lord can protect him, prepare him, and provide for him. From all angles, this looked like a bad idea (desolate, dangerous, dumb) but Elijah fully surrendered in this place and was made ready “there” for maximum fruitfulness. Likewise, God is going to lead us to our own purposeful places and He will do for us what He did “there” for Elijah. May the Lord give to each of us the foresight and hindsight to appreciate His great work that He does in each of us “there.”

We will get our introduction to Elijah (1 Kings 17:1) and see how God used some things to shape him with readiness to step into a troubled time. When life is a mess, God is still God! He is ready and able to act. But often, how the Lord involves Himself in a mess is through a person who He’s prepared to be His voice to speak into that situation, and be His hands to act in what needs to be done. God prepares each of us, as followers of Jesus, for “now” moments – opportunities when Christ seeks to do something in the problems around us.

This week we are wrapping up our Walk this Way series. For our last point of study in our pursuit of God will, we are going to tackle the question: what am I doing wrong? There are some who have taken the teaching to heart, but feel like they are not getting any direction from God OR they’ve stepped out in faith to follow God’s plan and they are not seeing it come together. So the obvious conclusion is must be: “I’m doing something wrong.” In Hebrews 10:35 we learn about the “patient endurance” we need to “continue to do God’s will.” We might feel tempted to give up on God’s plan, but we will pursue a higher level of persistence and patience as we go after God’s direction for our life.

Week four of our Walk This Way series will lead us to study a signature statement Jesus makes about our connection with Him - “Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!” (Matthew 12:50). This is a throwdown moment and one of the strongest statements Jesus offers on His expectations for His followers. The more deeply connected we are to Him, the more committed we must be to finding and following God’s will. Our aim this week is to consider some actions that may help us take forward steps in walking in God’s will for our life.

In our discovering God’s will study, we learned last week about God’s availability for approaching Him with any need for direction. But we also learned that there are many times He will leave a directional decision up to us, which underscores the need to grow and mature spiritually so that we have the wisdom to make those choices. This week, we will focus on cracking the code of God’s will – meaning when He does have something specific He wants us to do how do we discern what that is. We will direct our attention to the Apostle Paul’s discernment factor of being “compelled” or “bound by the Spirit.” We will learn ways that we pick up on the prompting the Spirit and how we can be convinced of the Lord’s direction.

In week 2 of our discovering God’s will study, we are going to talk about approaching God for direction. As part of God’s care for us, He directs our lives. Psalm 37:23 tells us “The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” When it comes to seeking God’s direction, we often divide our lives into the bigs and the smalls = big items (career, choice of spouse, house purchase, etc) seem like we need God’s direction. But the smaller decisions (what we wear, when to schedule appointments, what to order off the menu) seem like our decisions to make. One assurance we get from Scripture is that there is no category of life that is off limits for seeking God’s direction. BUT at some point we have to wrestle with the responsibility of what it looks like to live wisely by maturing in faith and making some directional decisions. I’ve found that sometimes we are “waiting on God” to make some of our directional decisions for us, when maybe God is “waiting on us” to pick a direction wisely. We are going to process this tension along with learning how “asking for wisdom” (James 5) and walking in God’s will require some next level maturity, trust, and relationship with God.

I’m really excited about pacing us through this next study on finding and following God’s will for our lives. The second most commonly asked question I field is: How do I know what God wants me to do? I know for certain that learning to discover God’s plan is a felt need for many right now. This Sunday we step into that with a message on opening our heart to God’s plan. As strange as it seems, there are many who are afraid to discover God’s will out of fear over what He may ask or where He may lead. We are going affirm His good intentions (Jeremiah 29:11) and we are going to uncover some of the boundaries of His good, pleasing, and perfect will (Romans 12:2).

Snow has a connection with us. Snow covered peaks are regal and inspiring. When snow falls, it comes down in such an elegant way and graciously covers the bareness of winter under a blanket of white snow. Then throw in how much fun that can be had in the snow. People have a positive attachment to snow and Scripture leverages those good snow vibes to reveal how great God is. But there was no clearer demonstration of that fact than what Jesus did for us.

For week two of our Let It Snow Christmas series, we will focus on a principle found in Proverbs 31:21 that deals with the issue of readiness. There is a picture in the proverb of living ready and wise – being prepared and responsive to responsibilities and obligations in front of us. God is looking for ready people to favor them! When we do our part, then God will do His part adding favor to our readiness so that we reap a reward. Psalm 90:17 “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” Living ready and wise will put us on course for confronting two common tendencies: procrastination and presumption. It is unwise to delay doing what we know we need to do.
This week – we’ll see what a guy fighting a lion on a snowy day might have to tell us about how we approach opportunities that are presented to us. We’ll learn things like God-given opportunities can happen anywhere and that obstacles to opportunities draw out our faith.

This weekend we wrap up our study of 1 Peter. We’ll look at the encouraging and hopeful conclusion provided in chapter 5. After pressing in on some heavy themes of difficulty and suffering, Peter closes on an upswing by assuring that in God’s time, He will lift you up. This is the truth - hardships won’t last forever. The Lord will “restore, support and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.” (vs10) We’ll close by remembering together Peter’s own life story, it is living proof that restores.

Today we finish up chapter four of 1 Peter in our sermon series we’re calling “Church in the Wild.” Suffering can come upon us without asking for it. So don’t engage in something that will likely put you in a situation ripe for suffering! Your life’s not going to be perfect. But we do get to choose. When you are gone, will the major theme and actions of your life be those that are obviously inspired and fueled by Jesus Christ?

This Sunday we take a closer look at some of the direction Peter offers for valuing a life “squeeze” – situations/seasons when we feel hard pressed on every side. Many of us are aware of God’s providential work in the pains of life. But can you imagine enduring struggles without the nuggets of truth you’ve received from Scripture and from wise encouragement? That was the situation for the people that first received Peter’s letter. They’d never heard “God works all things together for good.” They just assumed they suffered because God had abandoned them or was mad at them. And, eventhough we know better…sometimes we get confused by what we are walking through to. It’s good to be reminded that there’s a juice worth the squeeze.

We are still in the section of the letter that prioritizes living “properly among unbelieving neighbors.” The key to that challenge is found in 3:15 which addresses “setting Christ apart in our hearts.” The more Jesus is elevated to His rightful position in our heart, the more capable we are to interact with each other and our world.

Are you sure you are where you need to be in your relationship with Jesus? We don’t have to turn to addictions and sin for comfort. We have Christ, and that brings Joy to our lives knowing that we have a home in heaven. But we need to turn and pray for lost people who don’t have that Joy and Peace of assurance of everlasting life with Jesus.

1 Peter 3:1-7 presses into some issues relating to marriage. Peter is aware that the external pressures felt by these immigrant Jewish Christians would add stress to their marriages. And he considered how Christians navigated marriage to be part of his caution to live honorably in front of unbelieving neighbors (2:12) – the world is watching. With the extra pressures that are inescapable in life, couples can easily turn away from one another and abandon their responsibilities to each other. That plays right into the hand of the devil who is working to steal their marriage and wreck their witness. We want to draw upon the Lord and faithfully adhere to the unique responsibilities that are set to husbands and wives. Let God redeem and renew couples.

As we continue our 1 Peter study, we are going to look at God’s grace to help us navigate some of life’s “extra” situations and “extra” people. If you need help understanding the idea behind extra, the urban dictionary defines it as “dramatic, excessive, over the top, way too much.” Anybody know any “extra” people??? Thankfully God has grace to give us for the “extras.” We will look at two every extreme extra situations cited by Peter to help us guide us for walking out extra grace: submitting to governing authorities and how slaves had to endure cruelties (1 Peter 2:13-25). In our own hard situations that seem almost impossible to cope with, God gives us grace. Part of His grace is the example of Jesus. We’ll learn about walking in His steps as we handle the extras in our life.

To boldly go where no man has gone before to build God’s kingdom. Using 1 Peter, Chapter 2 as our guide we find that we need to be packing for a mission trip, not a vacation as we walk on the wild side to share Christ with the world.

The wrap up message in our Under Construction series will focus on this aspect of faith: Believe through Something. We have to build our faith by continuing to believe God as we go through some of life’s hard turns. This represents some of the grind of faith. It’s keep moving forward through difficult seasons is one of the most amazing expressions of faith. God works by using what we go through to create some of our greatest growth. I’m captivated by the way Peter describes this fact: “what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace.” (1 Peter 5:12).

Week 3 in our Under Construction study brings us to the challenge of building our faith by asking in faith for God to do bold specific things. We are going to learn to believe FOR something. Matthew 17 includes a rare look at a side of Jesus’ humanity we don’t think about…experiencing – frustration. The disciples’ revealed a fault in their faith, they had “little faith” or more specifically “poor faith.” What made it poor and frustrating to Jesus was its lack of complete reliance on Him. As we learn to ask in faith, we’ll unearth some important rhythms to direct our full reliance on Jesus as we believe for bold and specific things.

This message will center on building our faith to believe on Jesus – is Jesus the only way of salvation? While there are some aspects of truth and select beauty found in some rituals of the world’s religions, Paul rightly concluded, “they have enthusiasm for God but it is misdirected zeal” (Romans 10:2). Jesus made it very clear in John 14:6 that He is the only way to the Father. Our aiming point is to be humbled and compassionate – joining Jesus in a mission to reach the utter lostness of our world and putting our continuing trust on Him as Lord.
