We may not have the classic “loud” addictions of alcohol, drugs, sex, or porn, but most of us fall into the trap of the more dangerous and devious ones. Series: Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?
Central Focus of the Series: I want to connect with the real Jesus. I don’t want to settle for someone else’s ideas about Jesus. I don’t want to settle for MY ideas about him. And I believe every human being wants to connect with Jesus in a relationship that shapes their lives for the better. (We might use different terms to describe this inner drive, but I think our spirits were created to connect with Jesus.) So, we will study Jesus’s statements about himself. Because if you want to know a person you need to hear what they say about who they are.

Discovering and discussing the secrets to a great, lasting "Christ Centered" relationship or marriage.
Learning how to break free from debt, and experiencing the "debt-free" life God wants us to have.
It’s really easy to hang out on the fringe of the crowd around Jesus. You could settle for being a spectator merely watching Jesus work in and through others. Or you can experience an exciting life of significance as you follow Jesus and see him work in and through you!
Many people settle for the cloak of respectable religion. They claim to believe what everyone else believes – no more and no less. But Jesus came to call us into a growing relationship with him.
Most Americans tend to believe a relationship with God is primarily about going to heaven when you die. Plus, they think that all good people will go to heaven. But the truth is that your relationship with God in this life will determine your destination in the next. Plus, moral living will not and cannot make anyone’s relationship right with God.
Telling people God loves you seems tired and pointless. Most of our friends and neighbors act as though that's his job. I have to respect the doubters who say it's arrogant to believe a Supreme Being would care about us. They get it. The idea that God would voluntarily bind himself to us in a covenant is truly awesome.
Human beings have a strong tendency to live life in their own individual ways. We bristle at the idea of anyone – even God telling us how to live. But when we see Jesus' obedience on the cross it can motivate us to obey God.
Jesus, the Son of God, became the Son of Man that we, the sons and daughters of man might become the children of God.
So many people are under the impression that there are simply no negative consequences for their sins. But our sins deserve judgment and punishment. Jesus took that punishment for us on the cross when he suffered and died. We need to trust God when he declares we are pardoned because of Jesus.
We often feel trapped and out of control when we try to live according to Jesus' teaching. But Jesus died on the cross to defeat Satan and to set us free to live for God.
Most of us hate the idea of being called a slave to anything especially sin and Satan. However, Jesus died to set us free and we cannot receive it until we admit our need.
In a culture that sees sex as a recreational activity like tennis or as a benefit of being good friends, God calls his people to a life of purity. In a society where sex has become both a form of entertainment and a multi-billion dollar business, God calls us to maintain a pure lifestyle.
Singles are complete in their relationship with Jesus and can build God's family as well as, or better than married couples.
We often act as if the cure for greed is more money. If we have enough money then we will stop being greedy. However, the only way to overcome greed is with contentment. When we are satisfied with what the Lord provides we will have enough.
You can live an exciting life of expectancy if you begin each day asking God to lead your steps throughout the day.
We need to develop the attitude of contentment in all situations. It begins when we look up to heaven and thank God for what we have.
We hear countless promises every day. But when God makes a promise we can count on Him to keep it. He does not lie. We can trust the Lord's promise completely.
God calls us to a hope that grabs hold of his grace in order to change. Hope-filled Christians exchange sinful habits for Christ-like habits.
The Bible exposes the only way to deal with our pasts -- real forgiveness. First we need to receive God's forgiveness. Then, we can seek to forgive those who hurt us as we seek forgiveness from those we’ve hurt.
Jesus is bigger than any box we try to confine him to -- he is bigger than any problem we think looks too big to handle.
Jesus Christ is more than a good teacher or great human being. He is the Son of God, our Lord.
Most people go to one of two extremes with creation. Some people simply take it for granted while others take it so seriously that it seems like they worship it. Christians should learn to see God in creation.
Too many people, even faithful church attending Christians, suffer from "Santa Claus Syndrome." They asked God to do something for them or to give them some other thing and it did not happen. So they began to act as though God either does not care or cannot help. They confused controlling God with trusting God. We need to dump the doubts because we will never understand God
We tend to avoid saying and doing things that will make us stand out from the crowd. We are afraid of what others might think of us. However, Jesus calls us to follow him and when we do we will stand out. There will be people who don"t like it. When that happens, Jesus calls us to rejoice.
We hide our fear of finding peace in our relationships behind all kinds of excuses. But Jesus declares that God's children are to take the first step every time. We are to follow his example and seek ways to intentionally initiate peacemaking activities in our relationships.
We've become hard hearted because we tried to heal and protect our broken hearts in our own ways. However, God invites each of us to allow him to heal our broken hearts and to take away our hard hearts.
We tend to find ways to ignore, deny, dull, or remove pain in our pursuit of happiness. But, Jesus says happiness is found in sharing our pain with him and then sharing the pain of others.
Jesus says happiness belongs to those with self-control. We cannot control our reactions but God's Spirit can help us bring them under the control of his love.
Comfort is available, not in pills, booze, sex, movies, books, whatever, but in God Himself. If you will turn to Him, you will make it through the pain.
Why can't I catch happiness? Why am I always chasing after it and never grabbing hold of it?
Telling the story of how Jesus changed your life opens the door for God's power to change the lives of others.
Everyday God is working to draw men and women to Himself. However, we play a vital role in his plan. We will see God do "even greater things" as we make the most of opportunities he brings to us.
We humans enjoy our "Comfort Zones." We have our circle of friends and family - people like us. We go to the same stores almost all the time. However, God uses unexpected relationships to do greater things in our lives when we are open to them.
We tend to think people who do and see great things from Jesus are lucky. It's as if we believe they won some kind of heavenly lottery but God uses people who personally prepare their spirits and get ready for more of him.
Why do wise people earn all they can and save all they can? So they can give all they have.
We know that saving is important. We all know we should do it. So why don't we save more? Each individual and couple must decide to live on less than they make and to save the rest. We need to decide to do what we know is right.
As long as we submit to God's will, we have authority and power in prayer because of the convenant.
We are heirs to a great covenant between God and Abraham. It is a covenant relationship we should enter and enjoy with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. God presents us with a power for living in his new covenant that far outshines anything the old covenant of rule keeping had to offer.
The problem is that we are comfortable in our "Lo Debars." Moving up to the King's table frightens us. We fear the unknown; and we don't know what will happen if we claim more of God's covenant promises. So many of us willingly choose to live in spiritual, emotional, and physical poverty, but we are heirs to a great covenant between God and Abraham.
God established a covenant with Abraham that still blesses us today. The key question however is will you trust him enough to allow him to shape your life?
We do not understand covenants because they are not part of our culture. However, God chose to bind himself to humanity in a covenant. We should seek to understand and to experience the power of the covenant.
We often think of God as absent from our lives and our world. We know he sits on the throne of heaven but where is God when you need him? Isaiah declares the Lord is in the high and holy place as well as with the broken hearted. There is no middle ground. We can find God in the high place that emphasizes his holiness and in the low places that emphasize our brokenness.
In our highly individualistic culture, we resist the idea of confessing the sins of some other person or persons. We struggle with the idea the idea of corporate sin. However, the Bible makes it clear that nations, communities, even congregations can worship idols. The only way to deal with these corporate sins is "identificational confession."
Many people make the mistake of assuming the gospel is a command rather than a free invitation. Jesus came with an invitation not a list of religious rules and rituals. Accepting his invitation is like traveling to a new city with a friend who knows the way.
We often seek restoration for our weary souls in the very things that tear us down -- alcohol, relationships, food, drugs, entertainment, sleep. These things are not evil in themselves; however, when we expect them to do what only God can do they let us down painfully. We need the Lord to restore our souls.
There are many distracting and competing ideas urging you to build your life on them. But God can only renew, refresh and transform your life if you will invest time in understanding and obeying the principles of his Word -- the Bible.
We often wonder what one person can do. In a world ruled by greed, hunger for power and dishonesty, what difference can one person make? BUT God says one person's intercession can change the course of history.
Anxiety is an attack on the heart thorugh the mind with physical manifestations. The Bible tells us how to treat and prevent anxiety.
We tend to approach end of life issues from a personal and individual point of view. This is my life and this is what I want to happen. But the Bible tells us our lives belong to God, our Creator, Judge, Redeemer and Resident Spirit.
When does life begin? This is the key question in the abortion debate. A person's DNA remains the same from conception to death. This fact is a good place to start our discussion.
Some people reject Christianity because they feel the Bible is too restrictive in regard to sexual behavior. They want lots of freedom to satisfy their "sexual needs." It seems as though they equate sexual desires with hunger or thirst. If you are hungry and thirsty, go somewhere to get a hamburger and pop. If you have a sexual, urge act on it. However, sex is more than that. It is a sacred activity involving not only our bodies but spirits and souls, as well.
I cannot change the entire worldwide church and guarantee there will be no more hypocrites. I cannot change the Wesleyan denomination and drive out all the church people who are behaving badly. I cannot change this congregation making us all perfect. I cannot even change myself. Only God can make individuals and the church holy like Jesus. I cannot change anything or anyone, BUT I CAN PRAY, "Change my heart, oh God."
We need not face the future with fear, anxiety or worry. We belong to the God of miracles. Just as surely as he raised Jesus from the dead, he can lift us out of the pits we fall into.
The point of the sermon is to show how believers may want to see God working in their lives, but without a substantial, deep hearted, life-changing shift in the way we think, act, and treat others, then God will not hear us.
How can Christians say Jesus is the only way to God? That's not 'tolerant.' But there are reasons to determine that Jesus is your way to God, the sacrifice for your sins, your King and Lord.
Some Christians avoid talking to others about Jesus because they are afraid the topic of hell will come up. But we need a healthy fear of living forever without God -- to spend eternity alone filled with grief and regret.
God came into this world as one of us to experience and to overcome pain and evil. He will never leave us even though it may feel as though he has. We can trust him to never forsake us.
In a universe that exists simply because it can, humans have no purpose, no freedom and no value. I cannot accept that idea. I believe God gives us purpose, freedom and value.
This practical message draws heavily from one by Rick Warren about following God's financial plan.
In tough economic times, we often strive to hold onto all we can grasp. However, as managers of God's resources we need to keep on giving the tithe and acting with generosity. When we do, God can restore our fortunes.
Too many people face life alone. Their theme song is "I Did It My Way." But we cannot accomplish anything of eternal importance in life without Jesus and other Christians. We need each other to become and to do all God planned for us.
Every person struggles to beleive God can make a difference through his or her actions. We have all kinds of reasons to avoid working with Jesus to build God's Kingdom. However, we are created and called to serve God and His people. We can make a difference because God will work through us.
Too often we face the future with white-knuckled fear. We do not know what tomorrow will bring but we expect the worst. God has better things in mind for us. We can grasp the future with gratitude because each day, whether good or bad, is part of God's plan to help us thrive in His Kingdom.
Jesus calls us to make cross carrying commitments. These are not resolutions that can be broken and forgotten in a matter of days. When a person picks up a cross, it's a one-way trip. No one expects to come back.
We tend to underestimate God. We fail to appreciate his divinity and his humanity. We need to keep these realities in balance. Jesus is the infinite, immortal, invisible Immanuel.
The problem is that we want Jesus' peace without recognizing Jesus' authority in our lives. We want to live our way and escape the negative consequences. We need to surrender to the Prince of Peace in order to experience his blessings.
Some of us are trying to earn God's love and acceptance. Some of us are afraid he's angry with us. Some of us wonder if he even exists. But Jesus comes to each of us this Christmas assuring us of God's unconditional love, his wonderful care and his constant presence. We need to relax in our Eternal Father's love, care and everlasting arms.
We all are very independent individuals. Some of our first words, perhaps even our first sentence, expressed that self-reliance. "I can do it myself." This is healthy when we're dressing and cleaning up. It becomes unhealthy when we try to control others and to make decisions for them. We need to release our lives and others into Jesus' care and to receive the peace he gives. He is the Mighty God who can fight all our battles and overcome all our troubles.
Many people don't do what their doctors or counselors suggest. It's a terrible mistake to treat Jesus in the same way. Whenever he gives advice it is for our healing. From now on we need to listen and do what our Wonderful Counselor says.
It is time to trade in our childish view of Jesus, meek and mild, for the adult vision of Jesus the conquering King.
We tend to see the life of faith as a series of 100-yard dashes - short emergencies requiring bursts of faith. For example, an illness crashes in on a loved one and we try to summon up faith for healing. However, the life of faith is a life-long marathon calling us to believe in Jesus' power and wisdom, to trust in Jesus' character and love as well as to follow Him loyally.
We come to Jesus with our list of recommended solutions and timetables for each impossible situation. We act as though He needs our advice, as though we have the wisdom and He has the power, as though we're the brains and He's the brawn. But that's crazy talk. We create many of the impossible problems we face with our shortsightedness and mistakes. We can no more be the brains behind solving them than we can be the brawn. We must come to Jesus with Mary's attitude. “Lord, I am your servant. Meet this need with your wisdom, power and love.”
Every single human being is spiritually dead. In our self-sufficient delusions, we think we can make things right. But dead people don't accomplish anything. Our only hope is God's simple promise of forgiveness for all our sins.
Some doubts lead to deeper faith. This kind of doubt is acceptable to God. It asks, "How can this happen?" However, we must avoid the kind of doubt that leads to disbelief and sin. It asks, "Why should I believe you?" Doubts and questions that deepen our faith (creating greater belief and trust in, as well as loyalty to the Lord) are good for us. Doubts and questions that decrease our faith (creating greater disbelief, distrust and disloyalty to the Lord) are spiritually deadly. The difference is whether we are willing to come under God's authority with our doubts and questions unanswered or not.
We like to think we are playing the ball game of life on our terms with our own team. However, there are only two teams in life- God's play by the rules team & Satan's make up your own rules team. These are our only options. God invites us to sign up with his team.

We always underestimate the deceptiveness of our hearts. We live in denial all the time. We assume that since we feel good about our lives then we must be doing OK. But "The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I know! I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve." (Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT) We must ask the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and allow Him to expose all our secret offensive, hurtful, wicked ways.
We humans tend to think of heaven as a vastly improved earth with all of the fun and none of the problems. We seldom mention God in our descriptions, but He is the focal point of heaven. It is God' perfect holy place, designed for His global family reunion. We will meet brothers and sisters from "every tribe and language and people and nation" (Revelation 5:9 NIV).
We tend to think heaven is a place to go when we die - that it's all "by and by in the sky". However, we can begin to experience heaven here and now because it is wherever God is; and Jesus said, "All those who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and live with them." We can also share a little bit of heaven with others.
God wants us to look inside ourselves because there's something going on beneath the surface. If we're going to find the joy of the Lord, we're going to have to look inside. We often try to avoid the pain, shame and/or guilt we might uncover but if we want to experience joy, we must take a hard look at our hearts. It may be painful to look at the parts of our past we want to ignore and avoid, but honesty is the gate to the joy of the Lord.
God urges His family first of all to pray. But He doesn't make prayer easy. His instructions specify that as Christians we are to pray for everyone.
You can learn to let go by giving God your desire for comfort, security and control. Let Him replace it with the reality of His presence.
No matter how strong our faith may appear and no matter how firm our commitment feels, our faith can be shipwrecked. That is Satan's goal for us. He wants to destroy us. But God has exposed our enemy's plans and purposes.
We are powerless to achieve the “extreme make over” of our characters that is necessary. We cannot change ourselves and win the spiritual battles we face. We need to surrender our self-sufficiency and declare our God-dependence. However, we can be “strong in the Lord"s mighty power.” We can take our stand in these battles and we will stand in all the blessings Jesus provides.
We can enjoy a victorious life with Jesus. We can choose to live out the Lifestyles of Victory. These are relentless daily decisions. They are habits we develop and deepen over time.
The rest of your life can be the best of your life because of God's wisdom, power and love.
Jesus' sacrifice purchased our pardon but we must accept it in order to enjoy the benenfits of being pardoned.
God can give us enough peace (release from our guilt and shame) that we can forgive even while we are being attacked.
God invites you to receive Jesus so you can become a new creation filled with His presence. He wants you to enjoy his presence. He longs to share his love with you. Will you accept his invitation?
Like the disciples we want peace FROM the storms of our lives because we feel like they will destroy us. But Jesus will give, us peace IN our storms because when he is with us they cannot destroy us. We want to think that if we are in the center of God's will we'll have smooth sailing - but sometimes storms of fear hit even in the center of God's will. We want to measure God's love for us by how comfortable we feel - but we need to remember that even when He seems to be asleep that we are safe. We want to escape difficult and scary circumstances - but God wants to give us peace in our storms.
We dare not settle for mere forgiveness of our sins when Jesus died and rose to totally transform our lives.
Is there a haunting echo in your life? Is there a sight, sound or smell that reminds you of some failure? Is there something that repeatedly floods your heart with shame? Then this is the time and place to turn all that over to Jesus. From now on the very things that condemned you, can remind you of Jesus' love and forgiveness. Inspired by a sermon entitled "Barnyard Echoes" by Robert Holland who was Pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (c) 1987 Preaching Today.
Pentecost draws a bold line and calls you to make a decision this morning. Now that God's Spirit has come, you can face life in one of two ways: like a bump on a log, or a lump of coal. A bump on a log does nothing and is good for nothing. A lump of coal is ready to burn. It is ready to receive power. The only way we can have a healthy self-image is to tell ourselves the truth about ourselves. The truth is found in the Bible.
Jesus is to our spirits what bread is to our bodies. Our bodies cannot live more than a few weeks without food. Our life expectancy without fluids to drink is only a few days. Jesus is the Bread of Life who connects our spirits to God. He is not an option we can take or leave. Jesus is absolutely vital to our spiritual health.
We all need love but we look for it in all the wrong places and persons. No human being or activity can fill our hearts with love -- only God can.
Jesus is not detached, indifferent or separated from us. Instead, he identified with us, so now he can sympathize with us and help us to conquer our pains too. We can trust him completely.
You cannot follow Jesus and continue with the same old behaviors. Like all other relationships, your relationship with Jesus will transform your life focus and desires. As a result, you will begin to act more like Jesus. Your behavior will change. If it doesn't, there is a problem.
People who are dying recognize what we often forget, that we are standing on the brink of another world. (William Law)
You can move from fear to freedom in our efforts to talk to others about Jesus because you are not the one responsible for convincing them to receive His love. The Holy Spirit carries that task. You are free just to tell them what He has done in your life.
God wants to use us, outside the walls of this church building, to be people who will lovingly interact with men and women who have not experienced His love firsthand, and to invest ourselves in relationships with them.
"If it is to be it is up to me" does not apply to our efforts to share Jesus' love. If it is to be, it is up to me to pray, to plant and to water BUT God must give the increase.
