Drinking Local - See how many different local breweries you can buy beer and food from by the end of the month. Without question, this is the best way to ensure we do our part to save craft beer. Post a pic on social media, tag us, and we’ll pick some winners during our weekly raffle!
We invite you to be part of our virtual community here at the Oregon Brewery Running Series and experience the beauty of encouraging one another to achieve our running and walking goals. Set a specific number of miles to run or walk this month, then push yourself to hit that number!
Despite these challenging times, we hope this experience will be yet another reminder that #lifeisbrewtiful with good friends and good beer.

We have taken a couple of weeks off from the podcast because, our events have been postponed for a but due to the coronavirus. We've been scrambling a bit to communicate with everyone and figure out what this means for us and the 2020 season.

Today on the podcast, we’re getting to know Tom Cook, the founder of Von Ebert Brewing. We'll talk about the people, the passion, and the philosophy that’s driving this relatively new Portland Brewery. Cook used to operate a Fat Heads Brewing franchise out of the same location. They have now split ways, and attempting to make Von Eberts and "All-Around World Class Brewery." No small task, but Cook is up for the challenge as we discuss.
We're running at Von Ebert at February 9, 2019. Click the link above and join us for a fun 5K that ends with great Von Eberts beer! We sent a few people from our team to test drive the food and beer. It's excellent, and here's their writeup.

Today on the podcast we are exploring the Barley, Barrels, Bottles, and Brews exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society. On the show today, I'll be sharing some of my favorites, and a few points in Oregon beer history that you need to know.
We're excited to be hosting our kickoff event on Saturday, January 19, from 6 - 8 pm at the Oregon Historical Society. Register now and join us for a remarkable run through the Buckman and Laurelhurst neighborhoods of Portland.
On this episode of the podcast, Ross and I dive into a bit of Base Camp’s history, as well as his peculiar path to co-found the brewery in 2012. During our chat, we tasted four Base Camp beers. Ross also shares what he views the true meaning of Base Camp to be; the causes they care about, what that looks like in their business, and how all of that informs the beer they make and the vibe their going for in the taproom.
I’ll be sharing a promo code at some point in this conversation, so keep listening then join us for our final run of 2018 at Base Camp Brewing in SE Portland on November 3.

Today on the podcast, we’re learning a little bit about one of the most iconic craft beverage, hotel and music venue institutions in Oregon, McMenamins. We’re running at the historic Kennedy School on October 27, and rather than just tell you about that location and brewery, today’s episode is going to be a sort of brief overview of the company, from the perspective of Conners McMenamin, son of Brian McMenamin, one of the two McMenamin brothers who founded the company back in the early 80’s.
Conners and I will talk a bit about his memories of growing up while this great company was being built, as well as the role McMenamins has played in shaping the craft beer world. We’ll also give you a very brief history of the company and talk about just a few McMenamins properties, and some fun tidbits about the company, so keep listening.

Laughing Planet is one of our event partners, giving out free goodies to participants at (almost) each and every one of our events. Mark is in charge of their fresh juice program. His title is 'Jucifer' meaning, he's the one making all that delicious fresh pressed juice! These juices, made primarily from vegetables, are incredibly healthy, and in a 12 oz bottle, contain three full servings or vegetables. In this episode, Mark and I talk all about the benefits of drinking fresh pressed juice, what makes the Laughing Planet Juice special, where you can buy it, as well as a deep dive into the various health benefits of each of their different juice offerings.

Today on the podcast, I sit down for a chat with John Frausto, one of the Pub Managers at Fort George Brewery in Astoria Oregon. In our conversation, John and I talk all about the ethos and culture of Fort George Brewery. As best I can tell, they’re really only about two things; the community and the beer. Everything else is secondary. We talk about what they’re doing to invest in the community of people at the brewery, which includes everyone from their team, residents of Astoria who frequent this fine establishment, as well as the thousands of tourists from all over the world who stop in for a beer. And of course anyone lucky enough to live in the radius where Fort George Beer is distributed. You might just learn a thing or two, so stick around.

Today on the podcast, we’re talking all about Laurelwood Brewing. We’ll be running there on August 11, 2018, for the third year in a row, and hope you’ll join us! Laurelwood caters to families, and as you'll hear from co-founder and co-owner Mike Dekalb, that was 100% intentional, and part of the driving motivation to open the brewpub in the first place. But Laurelwood isn’t only about dinosaurs, Little Tikes play kitchens, and being cool about continually cleaning up ketchup explosions. They also serve delicious food and award-winning beers. We’ll dive into some of that, and talk about the new beer they have on tap, with their brand new brewmaster, Eric Ebel. While Eric is new to this position, he's been at Laurelwood for four years and was eager to talk about what they’re brewing.

This episode of the podcast was recorded live at the 3rd Annual Oregon Brewshed Alliance Brewfest on May 16th, 2018. We had a table at the event where everyone was there to celebrate "Oregon craft brews and the forest watersheds that make them possible!" Hosted by Brewshed® Partner McMenamins Kennedy School, over 30 local Oregon breweries and other businesses poured great brews and donated great raffle prizes for this great cause. We talked to several of the brewery reps, Marielle Cowden, (who heads the Alliance), as well as some volunteers and other partners. It's a quirky little episode, but we think it will give you a fun sense for the event.

Today, Shasta and I talk about RCTC and explain why someone, at any level of running experience, but especially those with specific time or distance goals, might be interested in joining the club. They are taking new members starting this summer. We also talk, and about the inaugural Rose City Mile, which is a one mile race happening on June 30, 2018 at Dunniway track in Southwest Portland. I ran the mile in high school, I wasn’t very good, but I have always been fascinated by the distance. Shasta and I contemplate the significance of this distance, and share a few reasons why this is such a great distance for any and all runners to truly see what they’re made. Even the very casual 5k beer runner will find this an exciting distance.
Today on the podcast, I’m talking with running coach, Greg Mitchell.
REGISTER FOR OUR NEXT RUN HERE!
Greg has been a runner since 1995, and a coach almost as long. Currently, he is the head cross country coach at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, and also the coach of the Rose City Track Club. The bulk of the conversation in this episode between Greg and I is an excerpt from a longer talk I heard him give a while back at Portland Running Company. The idea is that by following these five simple principles, anybody can become faster than they think they can. There are no shortcuts here, and it involves some hard work, but if you’re serious about accomplishing your running-related goals, this is how to do it. The content is timeless, and relevant for new runners and seasoned vets alike, so pay close attention.

Today on the podcast, we’re getting to know John Harris, owner, and Brewmaster at Ecliptic Brewing. John is an icon in the world of craft beer, and while he might not use that word himself, the beer he is known for certainly fits that definition. After spending nearly 30 years working for some of Oregon’s most iconic breweries, in 2012, he took a leap and started a brewery of his own.
In today's episode, we talk with John about the very first beer he ever brewed, (an English Ale), and walk through his brewing journey from McMenamins, to Deschutes, to Full Sail, and now, starting his very own brewery, Ecliptic. He’ll also share a bit about what makes Ecliptic Brewing innovative, tasty, and oriented around community, so keep listening!
Today on the podcast, I’m talking with Scott Brown from Tandem Personal Training, about the convenient and affordable way they can connect you with local personal trainer to accomplish your health and fitness goals. Since 2014, he has been focused on helping anyone on a health or fitness journey through the development of digital fitness, performance, and health training tools. Happy New Year! Today on the show, I’m talking with Matt Rasmussen from the Run Oregon Blog. Matt is an expert when it comes to finding races around Oregon and SW Washington. Part of our mission is helping people to Get Active, so our first show of 2018 is intended to help you better plan your year of running and racing. We’d love it if you participated in all of our 2018 brewery running series events, but that still leaves a whole bunch of free weekends. Today on the podcast, Matt and Nathan talk about which races are on their calendars, and a few others worth checking out.

Welcome back to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast. Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries.
In today’s show, Nathan reflects on our 2017 season, thank a bunch of people who made it happen and hear from a few of our participants. We'll also give you a sneak peek into the 2018 season!
2017, By The Numbers In 2017, we hosted 18, 5k fun runs, at 16 different breweries. We were at Portland Brewing twice (once for the Hoppy Earth Day Brewfest), and at two of the Hopworks locations (Powell and Vancouver).
In 2017, we had 2,061 participants, and based on our best guessitmation, nearly 1,300 different people ran at least one event, meaning, a whole bunch of you ran more than one. People like Kim C, Kim W, Mark (there are three of them, you know who you are), Robert, Chris, Bill, and Laura (to name a few), ran in 5 or more events, which is pretty impressive.
We also kept track of the number of pints of beer you all drank, or at least the ones we purchased. Between all participants, volunteers, partners and our musical guests, that number is, approximately, 2,466. You also ran 5,111 miles or 8225.4K. We raised just over $4,000 for the Oregon Brewshed Alliance, The Portland Parks Foundation, and Life Vest Inside.
Thank you for making our second season such a memorable one. The participants, you, are indeed an inspiration. Hearing some of your stories helped Drew and I realized the diverse backgrounds we all have. From those working in the medical profession to creative types, teachers, lawyers, insurance providers, entrepreneurs, active military personnel and so many more. We all share a deep love for running and beer.
But it’s not really about the beer and running for us. It’s about bringing people together as part of a community. Many of our participants ran their very first organized 5K this year, and we feel so honored they did so with us. Whether or not they run in a whole bunch more of our events, we hope that running and being active becomes a lifestyle for all of you. We also know that some of you are hardcore runners, doing other timed races in the area. We appreciate you too and love that you chose one of our events to take it easy for a day. We hope that bringing together these two different types of runners inspires everyone to stay active, have fun, and give back as we all discover and enjoy the intricacies of craft beer in this great state of ours.
After our last event of 2017 at Stickmen Brewing in Tualatin, Oregon on November 11, I walked around and interviewed some of our participants. I wanted to get a sense of why they decided to spend a Saturday morning with us. Here are a few of my favorite quotes:
It's laid back, low key, no pressure!
Running and beer...what else is there to say?
Easy way to get back into running after an injury.
Feel like family..like that it's a small group of people.
It's just really fun!
And a lot more, so listen now!
We’re taking a break from the podcast this week. We’ve been hard at work getting all of our 2018 event registrations up, and combined with the Thanksgiving holiday, family gatherings and some travel; it seemed like a wise time to take a break to relax just a bit. We’ll be back next week, but we do have a quick announcement about something new we’re trying; Since it’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday and all of that, we thought we’d offer you the chance to get your holiday shopping done early. Rather than buying your beer and running loved ones one of those beer guzzling helmets, or another pair of running socks, we have a better idea. We now have gift cards to our upcoming season of beer run fun!

Welcome back to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast. Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries.
Today’s show is a rerun of an interview I did back in April of 2017. You may not know this, but before we started the podcast, I was interviewing people live on Facebook, and then posting that video to our YouTube channel. It was a little clunky, and not super easy to listen to. And from a production and interviewer perspective, well, let’s just say we’ve learned a lot.
Anyway, I’m resharing my interview with the legendary brewery, John Harris. You may not know who that is, but you probably know his beer. John is a hero in the beer world, and after spending almost 30 years working for some of the most prolific breweries in Oregon, he decided to start his own brewery, one of our favorites, Ecliptic Brewing.
A quick summary of his background, John began as a brewer at McMenamins’, then moved to Deschutes in Bend, where he created the recipes for Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter, and Obsidian Stout to name a few. In 1992, he was the brewmaster at Full Sail where he was in charge of creating the Brewmaster Reserve line of beers.
After three decades of brewing for other people, he decided to take on the ambitious challenge of opening his own brewery and restaurant. Ecliptic Brewing began in October of 2013, just off Cook and Mississippi Ave in a booming area of North Portland. They have quickly become one of the hottest breweries, winning a lot of awards for their beer, including being named the fifth top brewery in the country for 2017.
Talking to a Legend When I sat down to talk with John, I have to admit I was a little intimidated. Here’s a guy who created some of the most iconic beers in Oregon, and influential in the success of multiple breweries. I rarely get starstruck, but I guess I sorta was, as you’ll see, from my rambling question asking. We get to sample three of John's Ecliptic beers, and hear some of the backstory about what went into making them.
John was nothing but kind, and incredibly gracious with a few of my oddball, newbie beer questions and attempts at humor. A big thank you to John Harris for taking time away from his crazy schedule to chat with me. When we talked, Ecliptic had just installed a canning machine, and it wasn’t going well Not sure if you noticed John’s comment, but I know it was causing him headaches, yet he still found time to chat. That’s a solid guy.
And thank you for listening to the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast! Part of the reason I’m sharing this again now is that we just found out Ecliptic is on board for one of our runs in 2018 and we're incredibly excited! If you want early access to that event, register here and get $5 off for a limited time.
Today on the Oregon Brewery Running Series podcast, we’re talking about one of my favorite places to eat in the whole world, Laughing Planet. If you’re not from the Portland area, Laughing Planet is a small chain of local, quick service restaurants in the Portland Metro (also with locations in Bend, Eugene, Corvallis, and Reno, Nevada).
Laughing Planet is hard to classify as one particular food category. They offer burritos, bowls, and salads, but it’s not Mexican food. You have to experience it. Michael Firth, the General Manager at my local Laughing Planet location, in the Hollywood district of NE Portland, describes it this way.
You can get this legitimate farm-to-table, nutritious meal made by happy people that give a damn about what they're doing. You know and how they like, just influence this world in their daily lives by doing the right thing. But you get that for like 25 bucks!
In today’s episode, we’re going to be talking to Michael and the owner and CEO of Laughing Planet, Franz Spielvogel, about what makes this place so unique. You'll get to learn:
Why We Love Laughing Planet Laughing Planet holds a special place in my heart. When we moved to Portland from Minneapolis, our stuff was delayed, and I swear we ate at Laughing Planet for a week straight. It never got old, and we continue to eat there around once a week. Part of what keeps us going back is not just the delicious, healthy food, or the fact that my kids love it (which is a huge bonus), but also the friendly people who work there. They never even let us clean up after the kids have thrown a ton of food on the floor!
Laughing Planet is one of the Oregon Brewery Running Series small business partners in 2017. We reached out to them because they are a company we aspire to become. Their values seem to align with our own, and with what we hope to grow into as an organization that gives back to the community. Consider all the good they do the next time you eat there.

Today on the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast, Nathan sits down with Orly Wahba, the founder and CEO of Life Vest Inside a non-profit organization focused on empowering and uniting the world through kindness. Last week, I talked with Jason Hattrick, who is the local Kindness Ambasaddor with Life Vest and has been and a few of our recent runs. Go back to listen to that episode for more ways to get involved locally.
Orly and Nathan chat at The Pie Spot over on NE 24th and Sandy Portland on the first day of her six-week kindness boomerang tour. Her goal with the trip is to engage people in positive dialogue around kindness. Click the links below to learn more about Orly and Life Vest. This episode is a little long because I left our conversation mostly unedited. I want you to hear Orly’s passion as I think it will challenge you to think differently about how you interact with those around you.
About Life Vest Inside In 2010, Orly set out to create a film, the Kindness Boomerang, about the power that each one of us has to make a difference in the lives of others through merely spreading kindness. That video went viral, being viewed over 100 million times and landed her a TED talk as well as appearances on The TODAY Show, NBC, CBS, ADWEEK, International Business Times and more. She also has a book, the Kindness Boomerang, and a host of other resources.

A date you may want to get on your calendar is November 12 for the Dance for Kindness, a global freeze, and flash-mob. Yeah, it sounds crazy, but Orly swears it’s super fun. Theme music, "The Oregon Song" by James Hoffman.
The Oregon Brewery Running Series is about three things: Getting Active, Having Fun, and Giving Back. Our name may lead you to believe it’s all about beer and running, but that’s just how we accomplish it.
We get people active by hosting 5K fun runs that start and end at great breweries. These are family-friendly events where people can run as fast or as slow as they want. It doesn’t matter, partially because it’s not timed, but also because the idea is just to get your body moving. A lot of good comes from that.
The second thing, having fun, also doesn’t need an explanation. Yes, our runs involved craft beer from some of the best breweries in Oregon and now Southwest Washington, but the fun doesn’t simply come from what’s in your pint glass. There’s something inherently enjoyable about getting together with like-minded people. Runners and craft beer enthusiasts are some of the nicest folks you’ll meet. The runners high is real, and we have a blast celebrating the accomplishment of finishing a 3.1 mile run by pairing good beer with great people.
The third thing, giving back, is less obvious, but no less important to us. When Drew and I started this in the summer of 2016, it was important to us that we partner with non-profit organizations doing good in and for our community. We wanted to help, to give back to the great communities we live in. Currently, 10% of our proceeds go to help the work of The Oregon Brewshed Alliance through Oregon Wild, and also the Portland Parks Foundation, the fundraising arm of the incredible Portland Park and Rec department.
We’re proud to announce a third non-profit partner. Life Vest Inside is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that inspires, empowers and educates people of all backgrounds to lead a life of kindness.
Today on the Oregon Brewery Running Series podcast, you’ll get to hear my conversation with Jason Hattrick, a local volunteer for Live Vest. He’s also a Kindness Ambassador and a Dance for Kindness Group Leader. We talk about the movement that is Life Vest Inside, what exactly Kindness is, why all of us need more of it in our lives, and a few tips for quickly showing the next person you see a random act of kindness.
We’d love to invite you to one of our next 5K fun runs that start and end at great breweries in Oregon and now a few in Southwest Washington. November 4 we’ll be at the Hopworks location in Vancouver, and next week, November 11, we’ll be in Tualatin at Stickmen Brewing. Use promo code LVI5, for Life Vest Inside to save $5 on your entry.

In 1984, BridgePort Brewing (initially Columbia River Brewery) opened in an old rope factory in what is now the Pearl district of Portland, Oregon. Back then, they produced a whopping 600 barrels (these day’s they have a capacity around 100,000). This was shortly before the law changed allowing brewpubs to sell alcohol in the same place it was made.
Dick and Nancy Ponzi, BridgePort’s founders (who you may recognize more for their vineyard), teamed up with a few other local brewing legends to get the law changed. Names you may recognize like Kurt and Rob Widmer, Mike and Brian McMenamin as well as and Art Larrance, Fred Bowman, and Jim Goodwin, of Portland Brewing. Their goal was to legalize the brewpub, a place where breweries could make and sell their beer, something not happening at the time in the United States. Well, good news, it passed! The rest is history of course and the craft beer revolution had begun, with BridgePort sitting at the center of it. No matter what you think about BridgePort today, the significance of their role in helping to establish Oregon as a beer mecca is undeniable.
On this episode of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast, I’m talking with Jeff Edgerton, Brewmaster at BridgePort Brewing. If this is your first time hearing about what we do, we host 5K fun runs that start and end at Oregon’s best breweries. Register here and join us for our next run!
Back in February of 2017, we hosted a 5K fun run with BridgePort as part of our winter series. At that time, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff and pick his brain about all things BridgePort beer. He’s been there since 1998 and has been in the beer business longer than that, so there was a lot of wisdom to absorb.
Jeff and I talked about a bunch of topics related to BridgePort, as well as what’s changed over the years in the craft beer scene here in Oregon. He also shared some beer tips with me, like why you shouldn’t drink it too cold, the reasons they choose specific ingredients for their recipes and some of the science behind it (Jeff's background is in biology). Jeff also describes, in detail, the stories behind the three beers we shared together.

Hopworks Urban Brewery, based in Portland, Oregon, believes that creating world-class beer and food doesn’t have to come at the expense of maximizing profit over sustainability. They believe in using business practices that improve the environment and inspire the community.
And that’s more than just a marketing thing. Their founder, owner, and brewmaster, Christian Ettinger, believes deeply in the idea of using beer as a source for good.
Christian asks himself, What do I need to make a respectable living, to treat my employees and the external community properly, and not pillage the planet while sourcing?
Today on the show, I’m talking with Christian Ettinger, from Hopworks Brewery. I sat down with Christian over a few beers, three to be exact, a while back, and got to know more about his passion for creating world-class sustainably produced beer and doing good for people and the planet.
In this episode of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast, we’ll dig into how he became interested in beer at a young age, and some of the ways Hopworks is utilizing their platform to invest into green initiatives. We will also chat about the organizational culture at Hopworks, and perhaps most importantly, listen to Christian describe the flavor profiles of the beer we tasted, and where those ingredients come from, so keep listening!
Before we get to all that, however, here’s a plug to signup for our next 5K fun run! We’re going to be running at the Hopworks location in Vancouver Washington on Saturday, November 4th. Running takes a toll on the body, and runners are notorious for not taking care of the inevitable aches and pains that come from training. Too often, we push ourselves too far or ignore lingering pain until it’s too late. This pain sometimes results in physical therapy, or even worse - being forced to stop running altogether, something runners HATE!
I know this cycle all too well. About three years ago, I was battling some of those injuries, while preparing to train for a marathon. I wanted to find somebody to help me “fix” those pains. But more than that, I tried to figure out how to eliminate them forever. This quest led me to massage therapist, injury prevention specialist and strength coach, Amy Brown.
That’s Amy, she’s worked with a plethora of athletes from novices like myself, to elite runners and other endurance athletes across the board. Olympians like Kara Goucher, Shalane Flannigan, and Evan Jager, to name a few. She’s a master when it comes to helping athletes of all levels, perform at their best.
Today on the show, we’re talking about injury prevention and strength training with Amy Brown. Amy and I talk about how she can help prevent injury, and she also shares four simple exercises ALL of us can do at home to stay injury free and run stronger
Today’s show is very practical, and no matter if you’re a hardcore runner, training for a big race or someone who just runs our 5K fun runs for beer, there’s valuable information here for everyone, so keep listening!

Baerlic brewing is the best small brewery in Oregon. That’s not just our opinion; they won the award in February at the Oregon brewers awards. Rik and Ben have created not only some incredibly tasty and unique beers but a taproom where people want to hang out. They started brewing back in 2004 in a series of friends kitchens, basements and eventually a garage. In 2012, they decided to jump in with both feet and do it for “real.”
Join us at Baerlic Brewing on October 21, 2017 for a 5K fun run/walk through the central Eastside industrial area. Live music, giveaways, cool swag and of course fantastic beer from Baerlic Brewing for all participants!
