Through the Living Unleashed podcast, Jeremy will awaken you to the reality of a passionate life of seeking God that is filled with hope, joy, peace, and freedom—in short, the abundant life Jesus promises. He will help you purposefully shape your life to experience this abundant life and live unleashed.

In this week’s podcast, we are looking at the question “What Is Discipleship?” This will be the first of a series of episodes that will dive into this topic to see the importance of discipleship as we walk with Jesus.
It is officially spring. The grass is getting greener, the birds are singing, and the squirrels are playing in my backyard. Spring is filled with signs of new life and God’s new work. What new thing is God doing in your life this spring season? Are you ready to embrace it?
I start every podcast describing the abundant life that Jesus offers as a life filled with hope, joy, peace, and freedom. In this podcast episode, we dive deeper into the passage from John 10:10 where Jesus says he has come to give us this abundant life to see what that looks like.
This past week Christie and I had the opportunity to go to the movies with a couple of friends to see “Jesus Revolution”. I am amazed at the many parallels between that time period of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s to the historic movement of revival and renewal that is playing out today before our very eyes. But while all eyes are focused on the various locales where God is moving that continue to make the news, I would like to pose a question for you—Is God prompting you? As God moves, is it possible those little nudges you have been sensing to either re-engage with God or go deeper with Him are actually His invitations for you to join in on this historic movement? In our last episode, I shared my upcoming trip to visit the Asbury revival. In this episode, I share the impact the revival had on my journey. It can be summed up in the following five effects:
- A Deeper Thirst for Jesus.
- Greater Hunger for God’s Word.
- A Renewed Richness In My Prayer Life.
- A More Profound Compassion For Others.
- Clearer Vision To Discern the Spiritual Nature of Distractions, Misunderstandings, and Trials.

I am headed on a road trip. Revival has broken out at Asbury University and has spilled across the street to Asbury Seminary and onto other college campuses around the country. On this episode of the podcast, I discuss the plans for this road trip and what I hope to gain from the experience. I can’t wait to share that experience with you all in future episodes of the podcast.
In our previous episode, we looked at what Jesus described as the one thing that is the most important thing of all—loving on God with all that we are. But he didn’t stop there. The second part is to love others in the same way that we love ourselves. In this episode, we explore what that looks like in our everyday lives. Join me for the journey and keep on Living Unleashed!
If we want to live unleashed, then it would make sense that we would look to the one who demonstrated the type of life that we want. He is also the one who offers us this life. So when someone asks him a question about living, we definitely want to pay attention to what he offers. He is asked what is the most important thing, the greatest commandment. What he says in response to this question is the key to living unleashed.

This is a new start to the Living Unleashed Podcast. In this episode, we discuss the journey I have been on during the break from podcasting and how that journey will bring structure to and fuel for the journey ahead. I can't wait for you to join me as we embark on this new adventure.
We have a choice to make. What are we going to think about? What are we going to focus on? This choice affects whether we experience peace and joy or chaos and fear. Paul says that we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. He also tells us that when we focus our minds on the Spirit and allow him to control our minds, we will experience life and peace. We can change our lives by changing our minds.
In L. Frank Baum’s classic story, The Wizard of Oz, we discover that the Great and Powerful Oz is merely an old, wrinkled man behind a curtain. All of the smoke and mirrors and booming voice are only a show. Once the curtain has been pulled back, Dorothy and her companions discover the Wizard isn’t so great and powerful after all. Fear works in much the same way. It blusters and blows and puts on a big show, but in reality has no power at all other than what we give it. As Zach Williams writes in his song—“Fear, he is a liar”. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul writes, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Through the Holy Spirit we have a spirit of power and not fear; a spirit of love and not timidity; we have a spirit of self-discipline so that we need not be controlled by fear.
In today’s podcast, you will learn how to get your “gratitude vaccination”. Studies have found not only a correlation but an actual causal link showing that increased social media use brings an increase to feelings of depression, loneliness, anxiety, and envy. According to Dr. Frank J. Ninivaggi, “Unconscious envy prompts one to feel inadequate, incomplete, impotent and missing out.” Gratitude reduces our tendencies to compare ourselves to others. “Comparison is the thief of joy,” as Theodore Roosevelt once said. When we practice gratitude, we are better able to celebrate the accomplishments of others in place of feeling bitterness and resentment towards them because of what they have or what they have accomplished. Proverbs 14:30 says, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Do you have a heart that is at peace? Gratitude is the antidote—or vaccine— to envy and a whole host of other negative emotions. Paul encourages us in Philippians 4:4-7 with these words: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We had our first Live Feed worship service on Sunday due to the restrictions in place to attempt to flatten the curve of the coronavirus pandemic. Today's podcast is the message that I shared during that Live Feed. In this time of crisis, we are invited to remember that God is with us, therefore, we can be strong and courageous (Joshua 1:1-9). The title of this podcast is actually the final words of John Wesley before his death. I hope you find some encouragement with these words. As always, Keep on Living Unleashed.
Has life made you tired and exhausted? Especially during this time of crisis with the coronavirus pandemic, you may feel overwhelmed and beat. Jesus offers us a real rest--one that we can't find anywhere else. With him, we can live freely and lightly even in the midst of crisis and tough times. Listen to today's episode to find out how to take a real rest.
How quickly everything has changed. Ten days ago, the coronavirus seemed to be something that was still effecting “them” (with “them” referring to someone else but us). The major headline in the news cycle was the primary elections that had been dubbed Super Tuesday II. Yet, as each 24 hour cycle passed, the news continued to get worse, until large portions of our communities were shut down in an effort to “flatten the curve” of the progression of this virus. To look back and review all of the changes that have happened in a little more than a week can make one’s head spin. And to attempt to look forward can seem to be an overwhelmingly scary and hopeless task. How much more will everything change? I have good news for your today. No matter how much or how quickly the world around us changes, one thing holds true—“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”. (Hebrews 13:8) Nothing on earth can change that and that is good news. The Psalmist says, “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:1-2) Jesus promises to be with us always. (Matthew 28:20) He even tells us we can find peace in him even though in this world we will find trouble, but we are to take heart because he has overcome the world. (John 16:33)

I love the season of Christmas. It is a wonderful reminder of how far God is willing to go to demonstrate his love for us. It is also a reminder of how he can use the most marginal people of society to impact the entire world. Just think of all of the characters that show up around the birth of Jesus. You have a teenage mom and a blue-collar dad, shepherds who were considered by society to be dirty and religiously unclean, and outsiders from a far-off land bringing him his first gifts. Each of these folks saw that God was doing something amazing in the world and responded. As we journey together today on the Living Unleashed Podcast, we will be exploring Mary’s response to God and how we choose to respond to him each day. I hope you will join us for the journey. How far does sharing go in community? Community draws us to share all that we have to care for the needs of others. Community leads to our needs being met. We are not talking about unhealthy, narcissistic needs, but genuine human needs. When a group of people gathers together with the same servant attitude that places others first, it results in a community where everyone is cared for. This can never happen in a group of people where everyone is looking out for their own needs. How do we know what love is? How can we recognize right passion? John tells us in this short letter that he has written. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” (1 John 3:16) Love and passion can only be experienced within community and relationships. Love and passion require a target. There must be someone to receive that which is offered. It always takes place in the context of community. The writer of Deuteronomy encourages us to impress the ways of God upon the hearts of our children. It says that we should talk about God’s ways when we are at home or on the road. Even to the point of hanging them on our doorframes. Think about that for a minute. Whether we are at home with our children or running around town doing errands, we are to be teaching them the ways of God. Our homes are to be such environments that express the passion of God and that express passion for God. On today’s episode, we look at how passion for God affects our relationship with our children. To bring the act of creating humanity to completion (and thus taking care of the “It is not good…”), God creates Eve. Before God does this though, he demonstrates that there is nothing else in all of creation that will fill the need for relationship like another human. Adam could not find completion in any of the animals that God had created. The most intimate of these human relationships is the one between a husband and wife. What does God’s passion for us tell us about our relationships with our spouses? One of God’s great acts of passion was the creation of the world. Genesis 1 records for us the great care and creativity that God put into bringing all that exists together. In Genesis 2, the focus turns from the world in general to humanity in particular. As we watch the creative dance unfold before us, we see the need for relationships. After creating Adam, God declared, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” It has often times been pointed out that God’s declaration of “It is not good…” is in direct contrast to the repeated chorus of “And God saw that it was good” that we find in Genesis 1. As a matter of fact, throughout the creation narrative, this is the only time that there is a statement of incompletion. Something is missing. We need relationship. It can be easy to confuse passion for God and passion for religious things. The church at Ephesus ran into this problem. If you read the first three verses of chapter two, it seems to describe the model Christians: hard-working, perseverance, defending the truth, and enduring hardships. All these are admirable traits. We would feel pleased if Jesus described us in such terms. But the Ephesians were missing something. This something was so important that Jesus said it threatened their identity as the church. If the world cannot seduce our passions away from God, it will attempt to distract our passions with busyness. It is a much more subtle tactic. We don’t really view that we are doing anything wrong. As a matter of fact, we convince ourselves that we are being good, responsible people. Now, there is nothing wrong with responsibility and a good work ethic, but if our passion is not first of all for God, it can lead down some dangerous paths. The world constantly begs to be the focus of our passions. And before we become a passionate Jesus-follower, it usually succeeds at getting our attention. We are continuing our journey together on the Living Unleashed Podcast as we look at living out our passion for God by seeking His Kingdom. Matthew 6:25-34
God’s heart is for the world. Ever since the beginning, when Adam and Eve first rebelled by giving into the passion to be like God, God has been wooing the world back to himself. God’s passion for us is so great, that he has gone to the ends of the earth for us–defeating death itself. It is because of God’s great passion that we can experience true life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Jesus says that we will be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11). As with service, carrying the message of Jesus and his kingdom to the world is an integral part of being a Jesus-follower. The most effective way of introducing others to Jesus and fanning into flame a passion for God within them is through relationships. As we focus our passion on God and invest in relationships that are built on loving others as God loves us, we place ourselves in a position to be a mentor. We mentor by being involved in others’ lives and inviting them to be involved in ours. On today’s podcast episode, we will discover how we can be a mentor to others. The scriptures describe the movement of God throughout history as he is on mission to redeem humanity. The climax of this movement is the death and resurrection of his son Jesus. But the movement and mission does not stop there. Jesus reminds us that no servant is greater than their master. Jesus served to further the mission of God and bring glory to the kingdom. He expects the same from you. Service is not an option to exercise when you feel like it or have time. It is an intricate part of who you are in Jesus. Individual growth. God expects that our results will be in line with the gifts he has given. Notice in Jesus’ parable the owner did not dictate how each of the servants was to invest their talents. However, he definitely expected that they would invest their talents and produce results. God does not just expect that we will accept who we have been created to be, he also expects that we will live it. You will not be judged on anyone else’s scale of talents, but you will answer for your own. What have you done with the life that God has given to you? Keep on Living Unleashed!
Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus tells us that the way the world will know that we are his is by our passionate love. Our interactions with our spouse or children will reflect the heart of God. Our attitudes and words towards our co-workers will reflect the passion of God. The time we take for neighbors and strangers alike will show the passion that has been placed in us by God. Our relationships make all the difference in the world as we strive to change the world for Jesus.

Passion for God. This is the fuel of our life. It is what gives you energy for each new day. It affects your attitudes and your actions. It is the path through which we find the “life to the fullest” which Jesus promised us. There is an exchange that takes place in Mark 12:28-34. Jesus is discussing with a teacher of the law concerning which commandment is the most important. Welcome back to another week of the journey here at Living Unleashed. This week is Thanksgiving, so we are going to have a special series of Thanksgiving episodes on the Living Unleashed Podcast. Today, we are giving thanks for the new life we have in Jesus. Lamentations 3 tells us that God’s mercies are new each morning. He is passionate about us and offers us his love and mercy anew each and every morning. Everyday I can live powerfully in the new life that I have in Christ Jesus. Lamentations 3:22-26 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. The Lord is good to those who hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”
What is discipleship? Discipleship is making decisions every day to intentionally follow Jesus. Another way to say it is discipleship is following Jesus on purpose. Now, to do this we must take Jesus and his words seriously. Dallas Willard writes of Jesus and his words, “They are essentially subversive of established arrangements and ways of thinking. … He himself described his words as ‘spirit and life’ (John 6:63). They invade our ‘real’ world with a reality even more real than it is.”
To understand discipleship, we must examine the life of Jesus and his words to see what it takes to follow Jesus on purpose. We have to dig together to discover how those ancient words are full of life for us today. How instructions for living that were given over 2000 years ago–halfway around the world–are still just as relevant as if they were spoken directly to us today. As a matter of fact, they are spoken to us right here–right now–if we will only listen. When we go to the Lord in prayer and prayerfully read his Word-we are listening. We are listening for the Word made flesh to speak into our lives through his living word that we might each be better equipped to follow Jesus on purpose as disciples.
As we listen, we discover that when we miss out on learning to follow Jesus as a disciple we are actually missing out on the promises of peace, joy, life, and power that he offers to us. As Dallas Willard writes in his book The Divine Conspiracy, “Nondiscipleship costs abiding peace, a life penetrated throughout by love, faith that sees everything in the light of God’s overriding governance for good, hopefulness that stands firm in the most discouraging of circumstances, power to do what is right and withstand the forces of evil. In short, nondisicpleship costs you exactly that abundance of life Jesus said he came to bring (John 10:10).”
Who is controlling your story? As we hear God’s story, we find our identity within it. We now belong to Jesus. “It is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). I give up all attempts to find my identity in my own good deeds, my accomplishments, or possessions. There can only be one master story-teller speaking over my life—and that is Jesus. In today’s podcast episode we consider the account of the rich young man that is found in the Gospels (Matthew 19:16-30; Mark 10:17-31; and Luke 18:18-30). I offer you the following prayer to help you weave the message of this passage into your own story.
Jesus, as I come to you this day, I give up all of my attempts to make myself good in your eyes or the eyes of others. Instead, I rest in your love as the free grace that it is. I take you and you alone as my Lord, Savior, and King. I relinquish all my efforts to find my identity in what I attain or hold onto—power, money, possessions, and position. I declare that you are my only Master. I look to you for guidance, direction, and strength. I want to hear your voice over the clamor of the world around me. I receive my identity of being yours. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, make me more like you today. Amen.
What do I most want for my children? What do I want to pass on to them? I love how Eugene Peterson translates Deuteronomy 6:6-9 . It draws out the importance to have Jesus inside of us before we can get him inside of our children. If I am not living in the power Christ, how can I teach my children to live in his power? I want my children to live a life filled with joy, hope, peace, and strength. These are qualities that God gives us as we live our lives in Jesus. This makes it all the more urgent for me to intentionally shape my life so that I am experiencing these qualities so that I can pass them on to my children. As we journey together on today’s podcast, we will explore how we have to have it to give it. Why don’t you come and join us?
Pray continually. Whatever is true, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Seek first his kingdom. Seek him with your whole heart. Love him with all you are—heart, soul, mind, and strength. Should our thoughts not always be on the Lord and on his kingdom? As we fall deeper in love with God and come to better understand his heart, we are prepared to come before God boldly with our requests, because our longings and desires will be in line with the heart of God. I am an extrovert. I love to be where the action is. But every now and then, I need some peace and quiet to be able to think and process information and ideas. This is the 50th episode of the Living Unleashed Podcast! I just want to thank each of you for joining me on this journey and helping Living Unleashed to reach this milestone. I am so pumped! I think it is fitting that today we are talking about joy. I have been producing the Podcast for five days per week for almost two months now, and reaching this marker on the journey brings me an immense amount of joy, accomplishment, and a sense of achievement. However, I can tell you that producing this podcast is not always a joyful experience. It is just one small thing that I do in a week that is filled with the responsibilities of being a husband, dad, and Pastor. If I were dependent on the podcast to be the barometer of my joy, I would be in serious trouble. I would have more emotional ups and downs than the average roller coaster. Hope. What is hope? If we defined hope based on how we use the word in everyday conversation, we would say that hope is merely another word for “wishful thinking.” We say things like “I hope to get to go to the game on Friday night.” or “I hope they have spaghetti at the new restaurant we are going to for supper.” We are communicating what we want the desired outcome to be, but are uncertain as to whether or not that will be the actual case.
Our scriptural hope is not wishful thinking, but a hard reality that is grounded in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

One of the unique things about him was that while he was a wonderful writer, he also remained a practitioner–serving the church he planted for around 30 years. Another voice was added to the “great cloud of witnesses” this past Monday, October 22, 2018. Eugene Peterson, best known for his paraphrase translation of the Bible called The Message, passed away. He was often called the Pastor of pastors. A life-long pastor himself, he authored more than 30 books over the course of his life. This three-part series of podcasts looks at a few of the passages of scripture from The Message Bible that have most impacted my journey and I hope they will have an impact on you as well. There is a lot of uncertainty in today’s world. All one has to do is scan the news headlines to know that this is so. We can also go through uncertain times in our own lives. Sharing our story doesn’t have to be elaborate or difficult. It is simply a matter of having eyes to see an opportunity that your story speaks to. I had such an opportunity recently with my seven-year-old son on our way to the dentist. We all wear many different “hats.” Some of mine are husband, dad, son, brother, friend, pastor, counselor, speaker, writer, and a podcaster. There are other hats that I put on from time-to-time as well. Sometimes I have to put on the Mr. Fix-it hat to take on a repair or the referee hat to take on my kids’ disagreements. The point is, we each have different hats that we wear in different situations. The question then becomes, what is the common thread that weaves through all of those different identities? Some of you may have noticed that I did not include a Christian hat. That was not an oversight. My identity as a follower of Jesus Christ is not a hat that I put on to come to church on Sunday and Wednesday. Do you struggle with focus in your prayer time? I know that I do. My mind can jump from topic to topic faster than a bunch of kids running around at a birthday party filled up with sugar-laden cake and kool-aid. I have to employ some intentional practices to help me to stay in the moment in my conversation with God. In today’s podcast, I share one of the practices that I use to guide my time of prayer and keep me focused and present. I hope you will join me on the journey as we continue to live unleashed.
I gained a new insight into the dynamics of worship one summer while teaching at a Youth Leadership Camp. The environment we found ourselves in played against the stereotype of how to set up for great worship. First, we were a small group-only 34 of us on most nights. Some might have said that we did not have critical mass. We were in an outdoor tabernacle that was simple and even a little cluttered. The seating was homemade wooden benches that were moderately comfortable. The tabernacle was open sided which added to our attendance in the form of gazillions of mosquitoes and other pests. It also helped us to fully experience the heat and humidity. This definitely wasn’t a new, air-conditioned building with individual padded seating. We had two worship leaders who each played an acoustic guitar. No drums, no keyboards, and no backup singers. Listen to today’s podcast to see what happens next.
Rain can interfere with our plans—plans to mow the yard, plant the garden, go for a walk, play golf, or go fishing. The kids get stir-crazy when they can’t go outside. We have all had times when we have had to change our plans due to a rainy forecast. On one particular occasion, I remember being particularly frustrated when my plans were interrupted, but, in the midst of my sulking, I recalled a trip to Mexico. That memory helped me to adjust my attitude and gain a new perspective. Join me on the journey as we discover how attitude is important when you are living unleashed.

Recently, as I was meeting with a group of folks, I asked the question, “What is prayer?” After some discussion, we came to a consensus that prayer is a conversation with God. However, after further discussion, we all admitted that most of the time our conversation is pretty one-sided with us doing most (if not all) of the talking. So the question becomes, how do we listen for the voice of God, especially in the midst of the chaos and competing voices that are all around us. Titus 3:8b,14 And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. … Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.
Paul wants to make a point as he wraps up his letter to Titus. He emphasizes and stresses not only the importance of doing what is good but the need to be devoted to the good. We must be intentional about doing good. It is something we learn and practice doing. Unfortunately, we do not always do all the good that we can. We have an enemy who is determined to keep us from the good. But, when we fail to do the good, we have a gracious God who will pick us up and set us back on the path once again.
Jeremy tells a story of his own determination to do the good, his failure to accomplish it, and the grace of God that sets him on the path once again. Join him on the journey and keep on living unleashed.
In this episode, Jeremy shares a story of a friend who helped out in a camper refurbishing project. Even though some of the jobs were overwhelming, the skills and knowledge this friend brought to the task caused Jeremy to be confident and relaxed while tackling the job. We can have confidence every day in life because we have a friend and his name is Jesus.

Why the Windmills?

This is the first episode of a two-part series of Origin episodes. These two episodes take the time to explain what the purpose and mission of Living Unleashed is and what value it can add to your life.
There seems to be such a disconnect between the life of the early church and our present-day experience of church. The life that is described in scripture is a life that is filled with joy, peace, hope, love, strength, and freedom, yet these words do not seem to accurately describe the lives of many followers of Jesus today. In fact, followers of Jesus seem to be just as worried, stressed, and angry as the rest of the world around us.
I want to discover and live this life that scripture describes. I have been on this journey for over 13 years. I am no guru. I don’t have it all figured out. I am merely a journeyer who is still on the journey, but I have tasted this living unleashed life and I want to experience more of this life every single day until the description living unleashed comes to characterize my life.
I invite you to go on this journey with me as we discover more of this life together as we purposefully shape our lives to live unleashed.
