The Fruit of the Spirit, Episode 6: In this week’s study of the fruit of the Spirit, we look at goodness. This is maybe the hardest quality to define from the list. Many people have many ideas of what is actually good. Before we can define goodness, we will first determine what and who is truly good. We must ask ourselves, does anything good come from us? Are my works pleasing to God? And do our good deeds matter for today? For eternity? Knowing God and knowing ourselves will help us answer these questions. And seeing the goodness of Christ and the indwelling work of His Spirit should be a source of gratitude not guilt for all believers. The Fruit of the Spirit, Episode 2: Common sense and our own experience tell us that it’s much harder to feel joy when you’re in pain—whether it’s a chronic or life-threatening illness, betrayal, a broken relationship, financial calamity, or an existential crisis. But God offers a transcendent joy that does not depend on our circumstances. That’s why Scripture can say outlandish things like, “Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds;” why Paul “delighted” in his thorn; and why Jesus said, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” But isn’t this exactly the kind of pollyannish talk that makes non-believers smirk and sneer? And even if you are a believer, doesn’t it sound too good to be true? The Wisdom of James, Episode 14: No one really wants to be a jerk. But what comes out of our mouths can just as easily burn the house down as build it up. Whether we say things we shouldn’t out of pain, pride, selfish ambition, lack of empathy, or for whatever other reason, we’re not predestined to stay that way. With God’s help, we can each improve and become a kinder, more predictable spouse, father, friend, and co-worker. Jesus identified the problem. It’s not that men don’t want to meet Him. But there are just not enough men to make a credible introduction. There seems to be a remarkable lack of grace in a world that claims tolerance as its highest value, doesn't there? That's because tolerance isn't really the value; autonomy is. But autonomy, we'll see, is a dead-end street.
Grace, on the other hand, is a breath of freshness in a rotting world. When grace is your highest value, rather than tolerance or autonomy. It brings a restoration of order and harmony in the midst of corruption and chaos. Grace brings you strength when your own strength fails you.

Scripture is God’s story and replete with how he worked in the stories of his people. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and then God used him to rescue those same brothers (Gen. 37-50). Psalm 78 tell us to recount the wonderful deeds of the Lord and tell the coming generations. Daniel and the Hebrew boys speak of God’s faithfulness and we can trust Him. The Samaritan woman at the well kick-started a revival with her testimony.
Stories are powerful and as God’s people we have the promise that He’s working through the big and small details of our lives (Romans 8:28). Frederick Buechner said that we find our stories in others' stories. Said plainly, our journey can be an encouragement, build a bond or provide wisdom to another if we share it. Paul was near the end of his life. He lived in a shame-based culture. From the outside, it looked like he had plenty of reason to have lost face. He was suffering in prison, likely to be executed. His messages were being mocked and torn to shreds. The churches he had started looked like they were falling apart. Many had deserted him. And then there was Timothy. “I have no one else like him” (Philippians 2:20).

There's suffering, and then there's suffering. Your favorite team might suffer a loss. You might have to suffer through your kid's piano recital. Or I might feel like the summer heat in Florida is insufferable. But these are truly temporary afflictions. There is a deeper and more soul-testing suffering that comes when your life will truly never be the same again: perhaps the hope you had for a certain future becomes impossible, or your assumptions about the world and the people closest to you prove false.
At some point in life, we all suffer. And if suffering seems pointless, life can feel hopeless. But suffering doesn't have to be that way.
