On this episode of Fitness Unfiltered we welcome Dr Annice Mukherjee, Consultant Endocrinologist to talk about Menopause and HRT. We delve into the truth about menopause and HRT and explore the benefits, risks and the wealth of misinformation out there on the topic. We look into the nuance behind recent headlines and documentaries, discuss why tides have changed so much on this topic, and also discuss the caveats and worries about overstating potential new developments in research and evidence. As ESG has said previously, if you are a woman, or if you know any women, this is a really important subject for you to know about.

From the questionable beliefs and biases we all have, the ‘web of beliefs’ this evolves into, how spreading disinformation and flawed logic puts us all at risk and social media’s role, to vaccines, herd immunity, propaganda potentially fanning the Covid-19 flames of fear, David’s ‘favourite’ falsehoods, and how critical thinking can save the world.

This week team FU were delighted to be joined by the Director of The Institute Of Performance Nutrition (www.theiopn.com) and host of the ‘We Do Science’ Podcast, Dr. Laurent Bannock.

Laurent shares with us the distinct differences between sports nutrition, performance nutrition and translatable nutrition information that’s most relevant for the general population. We have a candid conversation around the minutiae many focus on (and whether they need to at all), scope of practice and evidence-based practitioners.

We also discuss the current educational structure of courses relating to nutrition in the UK and the proposition that has been put forward the AfN (Association for Nutrition) to become a regulatory body. Graeme’s informative and entertaining food infographics are ubiquitous in the Instagram fitness and nutrition space, and through his myth busting and easy to understand posts he has amassed over half a million followers on the platform.

Having spent the last few years helping people understand the basics of nutrition and fat loss, he has recently released a book, "Eat What You Like and Lose Weight For Life - The Infographic Guide to The Only Diet That Works".

This week the Fitness Unfiltered team (sadly missing Mike) were fortunate enough to be joined by Rachel Hobbs RD PDip MBDA (IG: rachelannehobbs) to explore her fascinating work with, and around performance sport and her specialist eating disorders clinic. Rachel outlines the distinct differences between eating disorders and disordered eating patterns and what's almost become acceptable norms in certain populations. Are there links between addiction, perfectionism, preoccupation with food, certain sports and our bodies?

Rachel shares her wealth of experience with some real pragmatic tips for health professionals and listeners outside of fitness and health alike, in terms or when to refer out, where to seek help and advice, and maintaining a level of self care so signs are recognisable.

Gamechangers. We have spent the last couple of weeks on social media hearing every side to every argument when it comes to this controversial film from Netflix. So rather than rehash the same information you already know (TL;DR: biased discussion, cherry picked science and unconvincing experiments), we thought that we would come at the vegan discussion from a totally different angle by inviting an environmental scientist, Hannah Ritchie, on to the podcast to talk about the evidence for plant based diets, with a heavy emphasis on the environmental impact of the diets we choose to follow on a population level.

Hannah is one of the authors from ourworldindata.org, an incredible website which collates existing research and data in an attempt to make knowledge on major issues accessible and understandable, to help us make progress against the world’s largest problems. Her main area of research has been on finding the perfect diet to sustain us both nutritionally and environmentally, so this made her the perfect choice to tell us all about the science. Unsurprisingly, just like how nutrition is often poor represented in the mainstream media, other hot topics like climate change, sustainability and yes, plastic straws, suffer a similar fate at the hands of those who may have loud voices but may not have a grasp of what the evidence tells us. We explore all these topics and many more in this episode.

2/3 of Team FU recently attended the International Fitness Summit in Barcelona; 3 days of talks, training workshops, panel discussions, poolside bants and parties. This was a fitness event with a difference, the content of which has been driven by James Smith and Diren Kartal’s vision for a new direction for the fitness industry; one where inclusivity, health and happiness are far more important than bodyfat percentage and ab definition. In this episode we talk about what we learned and what we thought of the event and its impact on the industry, as well as addressing some discussion points that arose from it.

The Team are joined by Luke Hoffman of The Muscle Mentors. Luke and the gang are physique coaches who are often seen advocating training methods and lifestyle suggestions that may seem a little unorthodox to many, particularly those who advocate more traditional "lift weights and eat well" approach. We thought it would be interesting to chat to Luke to delve deeper into the reasons behind his interest in things like sleep optimisation, blood pressure and heart rate variability monitoring etc. We also discuss where these factors fit in the hierarchy of importance when it comes to training, and their applicability to day to day people vs competitive bodybuilders (natural/assisted). We also clarify the correct pronunciation of GIF, and argue about cats. If you are interested in chatting more to Luke about this you can find him at @luke_themusclementors . You may also notice that this episode may sound slightly less audiotastic than usual. This is because Joe Brumby, our Sound Engineer, has had a baby this week, and due to Fitness Unfiltered’s good nature, we have decided to give him some paternity leave. This episode is therefore dedicated to Hallie Rose Brumby, particularly 51-53 minutes where Luke went to get his charger and we discussed our laptop woes. Fitness Unfiltered ep. 38

On this episode we are honoured to be joined by Ben Mudge. The word inspirational is often banded around the hallowed ground of social media, but there are few people who deserve the description as much as Ben does. Ben is a coach from Northern Ireland who has made huge waves on social media with his positive approach to life, health and self improvement, not to mention the fact he looks like Thor. He also happens to have Cystic Fibrosis, and has used his platform not only to raise awareness of the condition, but also to inspire and help people with CF to improve their health and lifestyles. He’s also one of the nicest people we’ve ever met, and we couldn’t be happier to share his story with you on this episode. Except Dr Mike, who is furious about not getting the chance to host it.

On this Episode of Fitness Unfiltered, in the wake of widespread internet commentary on Cancer Research UK’s recent ad campaign linking Cancer to Obesity with imagery that appears to compare it to smoking as a risk factor, we are lucky to be joined by Director of City Dietitians, Sophie Medlin, who helps us dissect the adverts themselves, and the reasons that so many people have had such strong reactions to them. We talk about the reasons for people disagreeing with the campaign, and whether these reasons justify the intensity of some of the reactions to it. Both obesity and cancer are both particularly emotive topics, and it can be particularly difficult to put aside out biases and pre-formed opinions when discussing topics like these, but hopefully we have managed to do this in a sensitive and balanced way.
