Try This to Make Learning Easier No Matter Your Age Lifelong learning is good for our brains and bodies, it may even help us live longer, but learning is about more than rote memorization. We not only have to take in the information but be able to retrieve it and apply the knowledge. Retrieval practice is a powerful tool that involves unaided recall of the stuff we are learning. Whether it's about how to use our streaming devices, or understanding climate change or learning a new language, we are more likely to retain information we can use to enhance our lives by using this practice. Polly explains it all in this episode and talks about how it has helped her in her writing and when helping her daughter study for anatomy. Though this strategy came too late thought to bale her out of the Greek Gods and Goddesses lessons from seventh grade. Retrieval Practice for Lifelong Learning right here, right now on Polly Campbell Simply Said. You Write the Definition Is it possible to live a life of meaning and purpose even if we are in a dead-end job? Yes. And doing that might be the secret to a happy life. When we live a life of meaning and identify with our purpose, research shows we live healthier, happier lives. Yet, we all have roles and responsibilities that may feel less than fulfilling. Even then it is possible to connect with our purposes and find meaning by looking at the patterns in our lives and recognizing the times we feel devoid of purpose and connected to it. Our purpose doesn't diminish based on our jobs or responsibilities, but how we express it will change throughout our lives. By reframing the moments of our lives, evaluating our values, and defining what success means to us we can create meaningful, satisfying, purposeful lives in even the most difficult circumstances. In this week's episode, Polly explains how using questions to prompt reflection can help us move closer to the meaningful lives we want to live. What Happens if We Change the Way We Think About Aging and Caregiving? How we think and talk about getting older changes how we experience aging and care for those we love. Too often the narrative focuses on the negative aspects of aging. Caregiving and care receiving are seen as a burden or problem when loved ones who need our help can still live a life of meaning and engagement and so can their caregivers. Caregiving can be stressful but also a love-filled, interesting time, says gerontologist Dr. Sarah Teten Kanter, but that all depends on how we think of it. When we focus on positive emotions like awe, gratitude, empathy, forgiveness, and love we can change the caregiving and aging experience, she says. "Aging is not a problem to be resolved," Teten Kanter says. "The narratives around caregiving and aging in America are often once sided and talk about the caregiver and the caregiver burden and all the things that go along with adapting to that. But there are many things to enjoy and many experiences to be had even with the challenges that come with aging and caring for the loved one. "With the right tools and the right mindset we can create an opportunity to deepen our relationships and for our own growth wisdom and resilience for a lifetime."

It's easy to get locked into the daily routine and lose track of what makes us feel good, the things we enjoy doing. Whether is baking or learning a new language, going on a solo hiking trip, or taking a deep dive into music, whatever it is, the way back into life is to start exploring to discover what we love to do now, no matter our age or stage of life. It's O.K. to have fun, though we might have to experiment with new things to find what feels good now. That's the good part though, because that growth is expansive, exhilarating, and revitalizing. In this episode, Polly Campbell talks about how a recent transition in her life has her wondering what she likes NOW, and what we can all do to step out of our comfort zones and grow as a way of rediscovering what we enjoy. Some things we discuss? Daydreaming, mind mapping, and experimenting with activities we've always thought about but have been afraid to try--hello, kayaking. In the end, whether we enjoy the activity or not, the adventure and discovery help us grow and that always feels good. What Voice Are You Listening To? Are listening to the fear or the voice of love? One keeps us stuck in trauma, anxiety, upset and has us reaching for things that temporarily make us feel better like food, alcohol, drugs, technology. The other helps us acknowledge our pain, so we can resolve it and past traumas and live in a place of compassion, growth, and peace. So what voice are you listening to? In this conversation addictions expert, psychotherapist, and author of The Healing Moment : 7 Paths to Turn Messes Into Miracles of Love, Dr. Donna Marks talks about the voices we all hear of fear and love and how we can choose which ones we listen to, transform our negative experiences, and live with greater self-love. When we do that, compassion, forgiveness, calm, and joy emerge and we take back control of our lives, instead of giving it up to negative thinking, actions, and addictions. Then, we begin creating the lives we want. In this conversation on Polly Campbell Simply Said with Dr.Donna Marks you will hear:

How the voices of fear limit our growth and happiness.

How we can identify the things that dim our ability to love ourselves and others so we can learn to soothe ourselves?

How our relationships with others are a result of how we love ourselves and how we can replace our need for control--the voice of fear--for love.

Why We Must Protect the Rights For All to Direct Their Lives We want to be in charge of our own lives. Or at least feel like we are. That sense of autonomy motivates us to do purposeful things in our lives, create things that matter, and contribute to our communities. When we feel like we are in charge of how we live and work, we are also more productive, resilient, confident, and happier. Polly has been thinking a lot about our personal freedoms and autonomy this July (Happy Fourth peeps)and how essential those things are to our individual actualization. While living cooperatively in our societies according to our unique cultures, it is important that we subscribe to some social norms, like not running red lights and stealing from others. Those things aren't good for anyone. But we must also be on the side of protecting personal autonomy where we can. We cannot be in the business of compromising the personal freedoms of others by adopting legislation that dictates who people choose to love and marry and what medical care and options they have available. When we limit personal autonomy we limit the health and well-being of an entire population. We diminish motivation and increase apathy. Come on, this is something every parent knows. When you tell a teenager "No" that they can't do something, they are going to find a way to do it anyhow and that puts them and their family at risk. We don't have to do it this way at work or in our communities. We can honor people and allow people to have a say over their own medical care and work hours and still have systems that support our communities. It's worth thinking about. Because personal freedom is essential to our happiness and that kind of autonomy can't be limited to only the people we agree with. Managing Difficult Interactions Have you had enough of the difficult people in your life? You know those who are always gossiping, or making you the brunt of every joke, leaving you or others out of conversations or bossing you around? Yep, we all have our share of difficult people, but when we are regularly required to work with difficult personalities, it adds to the stress and exhaustion at work and in our everyday lives. Polly discusses what we can do about the difficult people in our lives. Ideally, we can avoid them, but we won't get away from all of them so here are some tips for managing. In this episode, we cover approaches like:

Taking a deep breath. Relax before you react. Then you can choose to move away or opt for an appropriate response.

Getting curious. People are fascinating. Release stress and anger to curiosity.

Identifying what it is you are feeling when you are around a challenging individual.

Seeking the things we hold in common.

And finally, remember, we can all be the difficult person at one time or another. It's worth slowing down and evaluating the circumstances to understand what we are adding to the situation so that we don't add more difficulty to an already challenging situation. What Happens When We Pause for Wonder? Consultant, teacher, and author of Tracking Wonder, Jeffrey Davis says curiosity, innovation, and wonder will not only lead to more joy and satisfaction but also help us through adversity, raise the level of our productivity and creativity, and help us flourish and it all starts with a mindful pause. Wonder, Davis says, is the ability and willingness to "heightened state of awareness. Instant mindfulness is brought about by something unexpected that either delights us, disorients us, or both. " Jeffrey Davis explains how we can track wonder by defining and detecting the downer pattern, opening up to the world, and feeling the patterns that hold us back, keeping us from curiosity and wonder, then seeking out wonder and expanding into it. When we do, we can recognize the elevating moments, the higher experience we also experience in life and that, changes how we think, behave, and create.
