The AK in Tyler AK stands for Alaska, originally out of anchorage the warm hearts and minds of the valley have kept the original rock and blues musician grounded neatly in the south. Tyler had plenty to talk about his journey from the far north all the way to the valley including his time playing in Seattle, his favorites spots to gig down south, names for his many guitars and some ways to cook Alaska's favorite fish Halibut. Last year we had the good fortune of interviewing a passel of local jazz legends about their jazz-funk project titled Groove Yard. Chip Gulbro, Keith Taylor, Chris Ferguson and Bryan Williams all make up the masterful squad that brought four live tracks to Spice Rack Studios. At the Bell Tavern on the evening of August 7th 1820 Reuben Turner and Thomas Logwood were drinking heavily. A horseback battle later that evening ends with one man mortally wounded and another barricading himself in the courthouse, but don't worry EVERYONE get's to wave a knife. The story became one of the first big news stories of the day with a special running in the Alabama Republican Newspaper focusing only on this case.
We also get a peak into Tennessee Valley resident's menu of the time which consisted of a pile of bacon, salted pork and you can polish that off with whiskey soaked bread and a tall glass of milk.

October is domestic violence awareness month and this episode of Red Magic Imports features music from 3 bands participating in a fundraiser on Oct 25th at Shagnasty's for Crisis Services of North Alabama which helps victims by providing shelter and legal aid. Sound Science is a new mini-series distributed by Spice Radio where we interview veterans, visionaries and professionals about the science and functionality of sound design.

James G. Birney is one of the few self-professed abolitionists from the Deep South and specifically Alabama. His life and work provides an insight into the evolving American attitudes towards slavery and its moral failings from the 1790’s to his death immediately prior to the Civil War. Birney was a deeply imperfect man and his path from slaveholder to first Presidential candidate for the anti-slavery Liberty Party traces a strange path across American politics in the Antebellum.

If Walter Cagle were alive today he might have had something to say about this week's "Snowpocalypse". The headline "500 Pound Weather Prophet of Boaz Dies" was the first clue that pulled John into the fascinating story of Walter Cagle. After suffering a mysterious illness that left him in a temporary coma Walter began observing local wildlife and predicting the weather, priceless information for farmers of the Tennessee Valley. Walter's fame grew readily with the help of newspaper stories. He eventually shared front page with the Spanish Civil War and the succession crisis of the English Empire.

On August 13th, 1828 11 enslaved people sued two white men for their freedom in the court of Huntsville Alabama. This was one of only two court cases John O'Brien has ever found that included enslaved people as litigants and not as property.
Today's case covered a vast expanse of 1800's civil rights including a women's right to property and "Manumission" -where a slave owner willingly frees their slaves usually upon their death. We also discuss the documentation required of free black people during the era.

By All Means performed a rare feat for us at the Spice Rack stripping down their big arena sound to a powerful acoustic performance. Hearing these guys in a different light than their normal electric stage show was one of our most interesting recordings of the year!
By All Means did not disappoint on the interview front either we covered eating at "Golden Coral" seafood restaurant and Justhrine's simultaneous trucking and vocal writing system. We also hear three tracks "You and I", "Tightrope", and "Seasons".

Her first novel, The Elect, focuses on a former child soldier embroiled in a struggle with an oppressive totalitarian government. She is currently working on the sequel to the elect as well as another book set in modern day Alabama.
In tonight's episode Laura speaks to us a lot about the surprising challenges of bringing a book from an idea to modern publishing, as well as some tips for getting started in writing.

Joel Elliott was one of our very first guests on the Spicecast in 2014. Back then, Joel was known as Huntsville's #1 homeless stand-up comedian. Since that time Joel found a home in Huntsville's arts and entertainment community and has expanded his creative output to include filmmaking, poetry writing, and songwriting. He calls his unique style of guerilla performing, Entertainorism.

What do elevators from the future sound like? Funky! Michael Shackelford and the rest of Birmingham’s Future Elevators were kind enough to drop into the studio before their gig at Copper Top last Saturday to talk about their music and upcoming tour.
Their sound ranges from the poppy to the surreal. His self-titled debut as Future Elevators expertly mixes whimsy and gravity, the fantastical with the everyday. Even as he grounds his lyrics in real-world issues, Shackelford fills his songs with new and improbable combinations of familiar sound.
The Wolves are back in the studio this week to talk about their kickstarter campaign and upcoming album! You can also vote for The Wolves in the Que The Music competition to decide the opening act for the headliners at this year’s Whistle Stop Festival.
Justin Tidwell from Rocket City Sounds sat down with us to talk about Spring Fest 2016 this Saturday at Yellowhammer Brewing! In it’s second year, Spring Fest is bringing in the new park at Campus 805 in the best way possible. There’ll be food trucks, vendors, and some amazing music from the likes of Aaron Lee Tasjun and The Whigs. Inside Yellowhammer there’ll also be an acoustic stage featuring a slew of local talent like Josh Allison and Steven Brian. Salina Brilla is originally from Chicago where she got her first taste booking for venues and has brought that passion and skill to the valley where she helps book bands and musicians for The Copper Top and Maggie Meyers and has just started booking some shows at Hops Wild.

-Hailing from different parts of North Alabama The Wolves of Chernobyl is a bluegrass band that takes a shotgun approach to entertainment. The core band of Banjo -Jonathen Seals , Guitar -Michael Hauser, Bass -Ben Jobe, Drums -Sean Fungafat and vocalists -Tyler Nafe and Victoria Olivares also have their alter egos as Horn, Ambrose, Twill, Happy, Constant and Daisy respectively. The Wolves performed their first “Stage Show” featuring live music and drama at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, and are working on a podcast radio drama as well as playing local venues. The Wolves’ next big step is a Kickstarter Campaign starting this coming month.

Local Orbit has been on the North Alabama Music scene for 16 years. Over that time the band has gone through may mutations but current members, Anthony, Scott, Wes, and Guza are still dishing out their signature hard rock, punk sound, served up with plenty of attitude.

Straight outa 5 points, The raucus and rowdy Do Nuthin’s are a punk-folk trio with some interesting instrumentation. Patrick jams out on the Acoustic Guitar while Drew wields a rusty bow saw tied up in chains and Zach with the washtub bass is the cherry on top. -Before All About the Tones even got together as a band they set one thing straight. They were going to make great music and they weren’t going to let egos, space, time or anything else imaginable get in the way.
Composed of Sean and Jason Lowery and John Birdsong these once metal-heads are now cranking out a sweet hybrid of Jazz infused prog rock that sticks in your brain. The guys dropped by Spice Rack Studios armed with never before heard tracks off their new album, Prodigious, coming out this month, September 18th, everywhere.
We hear “McFly” and “There It Is” off of their first album Demo Dayz, “Shia Labeouf” and “Perfect Day” off their new album, Prodigious.
Madison artist Float first picked up the can in Amsterdam to do his first Graffiti pieces. Now he’s on the other side of the fence and turned to mixed media of all types. Floats art combines strong colors, distinct contrast and iconography all inspired by his love for street art.
Float’s art table can be found all sorts of places, from the Huntsville Library, a variety of pop conventions and holiday markets around the valley. We talk to Float about his journey from street art to adapting his style to find a place inside the buildings he used to tag.

Chris’ music combines classical guitar styles with hand percussion techniques all with the aim of producing songs encapsulating atmosphere and nostalgia. -After many bloody battles and thumb wrestling Huntsville Band Thompson M.T. finally settled on their name. If you’ve seen their shows at End Zone or Copper Top you know all about Thompson M.T.’s crazy energy! Spice Rack Studios was lucky enough to lasso Thompson M.T. into some live recordings and an interview, even with a special guest appearance of their co-founder and constant canine companion Thompson. We hear “Claps”, “Cold Water”, “Growing Up Poor in Dubai” and finally “Sugar Lump”.
John Carroll a Texas native comes to us by way of Hendersonville Tennessee. Previously playing with Man & the Mountain, Carroll is now setting off on his solo career with a new EP coming out this summer. Carroll recorded 4 songs live at Spice Rack studios including debuts off his new album. We hear “September”, ” The Curse”, “Paper Boat”, and ” March of the Giants”.
Jackson and Lawson Beasley (Guitar and Bass), Austin McBride (Lead Guitar) and Joshua Bolding (Drums) make up the Beasley Bro’s. Launching from middle school, to bridge street, and now playing to thousands at whistlestop this year, the Beasley’s popularity continue to grow.

Travelling all the way to California, Benny Pitsinger honed a solid solo act with his southern sound. Back in Huntsville you can hear him live at Green Street Market May 28th and on an upcoming songwriter documentary series Rocket City Songwriter’s Club. Benny plays three tracks live for us right here at Spice Rack Studios we hear “Don’t Need No Shoes”, “The Music Tree”, “Walmart Fashion Show”-recorded, and “Medication Vacation”.
Len Bullard and Rick van Nostrand first chance meeting at a bank brought them together for a long lasting creation of music as a band first with JumpStreet. Now together as Dawghaus they bring Len’s talent of songwriting together with Rick’s vocals and instrumentation.
We hear Len Bullard on Guitar, Curtis Zimmerman on String Bass and Ben Jobe sitting in on Drums with “Morenita Do Brazil”, “Hey Bus Driver” and “Why Do Babies Love the Beatles?”

Josh Allison, a long time musician of Huntsville, recently completed a successful kickstarter campaign to finance his first EP “Hold You” We sat down with Josh and Judy Allison and Jason Humphress of King’s Haze to talk about how the album came together and their journey through song writing. On the interview we hear “Hold You” and “Pieces Together” recorded live right here at the studio as well as a clip off the new album “Satisfy”.
