With Pesach break over, the Spring seasons are winding their way down toward the playoffs. Straight ahead on Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Varsity Girls Hockey sees a 36 hour shakeup out West, Division leaders collide this coming weekend in Boys Varsity Softball and the longest current win streak in Yeshiva League boys sports is no more. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We start off today's update with a Jeopardy question. The category: Boys Volleyball, Answer: June 12, 2022. The correct question: When was the last time that the Ramaz Rams suffered a loss? Or...it was the correct answer until this past Sunday. The Rams entered their contest with the SAR Sting riding a 24 game winning streak. In the majority of those contests, Ramaz was the recipient of several sweep victories. On this day, the tables would turn and the Sting would sweep Ramaz 21 to 12, 14 and ultimately 18 to put an end to the longest active winning streak in Boys sports. SAR now sits atop the West at 5-1 with Ramaz behind them at 4-1. Some added insight on that last Ramaz loss, it was to the same SAR Sting in the 2022 semifinals. So for those curious, the last time that Ramaz lost a regular season contest? Pre-covid.
In Boys Softball, DRS made a statement this past Friday dominating Nishmas HaTorah in both contests to improve to 4-1 and drop Nishmas to 3-3. The Wildcats will gear up to face their biggest challenge so far when they meet May this coming Friday. May sits at 2-0 and will start the heart of their schedule with either a win that could propel them toward a division crown, or give DRS a heads-up in that race. Out West, Hillel stays undefeated drubbing Frisch this past Sunday to improve to 4-0. They'll square off with Shaare Torah tomorrow night, but the real contest for them will be this coming Sunday when they host Central division leading YDE, also at 4-0.
In Girls hockey, a mad 36 hour stretch saw quite a few changes in the top 6 slots. Sunday saw the Frisch Cougars extend their lead in the West with a 5-1 win over Heschel who entered the day in the 2nd slot in the West. Meanwhile, Frisch's rival Ramaz took a 6-1 victory over SKA to improve to 4-1-0-1 and last night Ma'ayanot shutout East leading HAFTR 2-0. So the West leading Cougars are now a point away from clinching the Top seed in the playoffs and can do so against HAFTR who at 4-1-0-1 look to have the East all but put away themselves. Behind Frisch, Ramaz jumps to 2nd place, Ma'ayanot to 3rd and Heschel drops to 4th, only one point ahead of SAR and 2 ahead of Kushner with all teams still in play for the 4 wildcard spots over the next week.
Finally, we are very proud to announce that the Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament is back and ready to roll with its 18th tournament on June 15th in HAFTR. Middle School teams will do battle in the longest-running hockey tournament in the Yeshiva Leagues while raising money for Hatzolah. Of course this also means the return of the amazing memorabilia raffle, which has seen items signed by present and future hall of famers, including Gordie Howe, Mark Messier and new goal-scoring king Alex Ovechkin. We will announce teams, prizes and schedules over the next few weeks on our website at MWTournament.com.

Thanks Nachum,
Spring is in full swing and all sports are officially underway. Straight ahead on Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the defending varsity, softball champs open the season on a run, two championship contenders put on a classic in Boys Varsity Soccer and Solomon Schecter storms to the top of the Volleyball boards. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
One of the many great things about Spring Sports is that we get to start talking about teams that don't usually get much positive coverage during the Winter Season, and in some cases, no coverage at all. One of the teams that we don't get to talk about at all is Netzach Hatorah. The Knights, not a winter sport participant, made everyone take note last year with their dominance on the softball diamond, climbing all the way to their first school championship. The 2025 season would start off with more of the same. The Knights took two wins this week, reaching double-digit runs in both contests, defeating DRS 10-8 and Rambam 16-6. The loss, DRS's first knocked them from the top of the standings board in the East which now sees MAY at 2-0, newcomer Nishmas Hatorah at 3-1 and the Knights in what has arguably become the most competitive division in diamond sports. In other action, Hillel opens up at 2-0 with wins over SAR by a collective 19-0 margin, and YDE has taken charge in the Central, jumping out to 3-0 with wins over each team in their division.
A school that we get to talk about a bit on the hockey end, but a rarity to the positive is Solomon Schechter. The Volleyball Storm are looking to even the field and have done a spectacular job thus far, undefeated 3/4 of the way through the season. A day after picking up their 5th win against TABC in a battle of the Storm, SSLI defeated DRS in straight sets to improve to 6-0. The wins give the Storm a 2-game cushion over 4-2 HAFTR and a 3-game cushion over North Shore. Solomon Schechter will have a month break before they face Magen David and HAFTR in their attempt to finish undefeated. A team who knows a thing or two about being undefeated, the Ramaz Rams are on the road to another title defense, now at 4-0 halfway through the year, picking up a dominant win over Kushner this week. They can be joined by SAR who sit at 3-0 but face North Shore tonight.
Moving over to Boys Soccer where we were treated to a possible championship preview and every bit an instant classic. The last two champions, Kushner and SAR squared off and made the most of every opportunity with SAR pulling out an 11-10 win over the defending champions. SAR stays undefeated at 5-0 while Kushner slips to 3-2, with only Frisch, Kushner's only other loss, separating them in the standings. Frisch took on TABC last night in their last action before the Pesach break. Speaking of Frisch, over in Girls varsity, it's been all Cougars who took two large wins to improve to 5-0. The Cougars will gear up for the main part of their schedule on the other side of the break where they meet up with defending champion Ma'ayanot, currently in the running at the top of the West at 4-1.
With Pesach up ahead, we will be taking a break until action picks back up. We'll see you for our next update on April 29th. Chag Sameach everyone.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
hanks Nachum,
No fooling folks, it's April as the Yeshiva League turns the corner into Spring. But first, straight ahead on Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Yeshiva League holds court at the 2025 Red Saracheck Tournament. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
From beginning to end, the 2025 Red Saracheck Tournament held an extraordinary amount of suspense, excitement and, of course, upsets. The Granddaddy of all Yeshiva League Basketball took place this weekend at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University with 21 teams vying for the most prestigious title and for the first time in a long time Yeshiva League teams were in command of the action for the Tier I and Tier II championships...just not the ones that would be believed. The afternoon session on Monday started out with the Tier II championship featuring two highly ranked teams, semifinalist North Shore and league-Champion DRS Wildcats, both teams were relegated to the lower bracket following stunning Thursday upsets, for 3rd seed DRS, it would be the 14th seed Frisch Cougars pulling off the upset on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Nathan Neufield for Frisch in the 45-44 victory. North Shore would also fall to a Yeshiva League foe, Magen David, who gained the 10th seed by virtue of their play-in win the night before over Flatbush. More on them later. The Wildcats and Lions would rebound with wins Saturday night to advance to the semifinals and narrowly advance to the finals, with DRS needing an overtime miracle buzzer beater three by Joe Aaron to send their game with Hebrew Academy of Montreal to Double OT and then a superb second extra session from Aaron to seal the deal to move on. In the finals, it seemed as if the totality of the last two weeks had finally caught up to the Wildcats. North Shore took a two-point lead with under a minute to go in the first and never trailed the rest of the way, opening up mid-teen leads at several points. DRS would make a charge late, though and would pull within two and with 7 seconds to go, Aaron would go to the line for two shots. Aaron would only make 1 of two shots to trail by one. With the Lions hitting a free throw at the other end, DRS would have one last chance to tie as Aaron burned his way up the court cutting through to the basket, but could not get the running jumper to fall at the buzzer, giving North Shore the 49-47 Tier II victory.
In Tier 1, two more Yeshiva League teams squared off in the unlikeliest of finals. 4th seed TABC busted through Fasman, SAR and top ranked YULA to head back to the main stage at the MSAC where they fell short only a handful of days earlier in the Yeshiva League Championship. Their opponent, the 10th seeded Magen David Warriors. Following their wins over Flatbush and North Shore, the Warriors knocked off #2 Shalhevet 58-51 and #6 Berman by 1 to become one of the lowest seeds to ever advance to the Sarachek finals. The teams would trade runs and keep a close game until midway through the 4th when the league runner up took over and finished off the game on a 17-7 run to take the tier 1 championship for TABC 61-49. Eyal Kinderlehrer saved the best for last, putting up a 24 point, 13 rebound double-double to lead the Storm to their first-ever Saracheck Tournament Championship.
The final winter sport event will take place this coming weekend as the 2025 Rabbi David Beitler Memorial Tournament will take place in HAFTR for Varsity Hockey.
Moving over to Spring Sports, in Girls Hockey, HAFTR has opened up a sizeable lead in the East at 4-0-1, taking a 5-point lead over second place HANC. Meanwhile, in Boys Volleyball, Solomon Schechter took a straight set win over YDE to improve to 4-0. In Boys Soccer, Westchester continues their impressive season, downing Flatbush 12-5 to match DRS at the top of the East with 4 wins and Frisch took a 5-4 win over defending champion Kushner to remain undefeated out West.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Thanks Nachum,
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a week delayed, the JV Basketball championship receives a fitting ending, we release the schedule for the Saracheck Tournament starting tomorrow night and, we open up the Spring Sports Season. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The final 2024-2025 Winter sports championship, the JV Basketball final took place this past Sunday as Flatbush and Ramaz, the two division champions squared off at the Max Stern Athletic Center. The Falcons took the lead early and held leads close to and into double-digits until the closing minutes of the third, when Ramaz cut a lead that only 8 minutes earlier was 11 down to 4 at 35-31. Flatbush would try and pull away, but Ed Ash would keep Ramaz in the running and eventually tie the game at 41 with 2:37 left in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately for both teams, the lids would close on the baskets the rest of the fourth would go scoreless and we would go to Overtime still knotted at 41. The first points of the extra session wouldn't come until around the 3 minute mark when Noah Hiltzig, the overtime hero in the semifinal game against DRS drained a 3 pointer, giving Ramaz a 44-41 lead. Ramaz, though would only hit one more field goal the rest of the way and allow Flatbush to take control in what many would call appropriate fashion. Down 45-43, the ball would find its way to Louie Franco who would drain a three with a minute to go that would give Flatbush a lead it would not relinquish. Franco, clearly playing with a heavy heart following his loss last week, had a career night coming off the bench and sparking the Falcons, reaching double-digits in the first quarter and scoring 5 in the overtime session, including the last two foul shots to push to the final 51-47 score, earning him MVP honors in the Falcons Championship victory.
Action now turns back to varsity with the Saracheck tournament, which we touched on last week. Flatbush and Magen David kick off the action tomorrow night with a play-in game. Other Yeshiva League teams in action will be North Shore taking on the winner of the play-in game on Thursday morning, while SAR takes on Hebrew Academy of Montreal, MTA squares off with Berman, TABC matches up with Fasman and League champion DRS will meet up with Frisch for the mid-afternoon to evening action on Thursday. Macslive will take you through the weekend into semifinal Sunday and Monday Madness as the three tier champions will be crowned.
While that all takes place, the rest of the schools have already turned the corner to Spring sports. DRS finds itself in familiar position this year at the top of the boards in varsity soccer where it's currently 4-0 and looking to add more hardware. However, they are one of five undefeated teams on the early season. Heschel and Frisch remain undefeated in Girls Hockey as the Cougars look to hang up their third banner in a row. Those are just two of the leagues that we will cover over the next few weeks, including girls soccer, boys volleyball and, of course, our diamond sports, boys and girls softball and boys baseball. All that and more, straight ahead as the 2025 Spring Season kicks into high gear.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Varsity Basketball completes DRS's "triple crown" and we preview the 2025 Red Saracheck Memorial Tournament. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The 2024-2025 Winter sports season will be known as the "Year of Green" in DRS. One week after knocking off TABC for the JV Hockey championship and HANC for the Varsity Hockey championship, the Wildcats completed the trifecta taking the Varsity Basketball championship with a 66-63 Overtime win over the TABC Storm. Overtime did not seem in the cards early on at the Max Stern Athletic Center as DRS opened up a 16-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. TABC would chip away at the lead and close the gap in the 3rd before Joe Aaron and Tzvi Tsaidi opened it back up for DRS and then again in the 4th behind Eyal Kinderlehrer's 15 point frame and Yonah Mandel's 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go to tie the game at 55. In the extra session, DRS scored the first 8 points, and despite a run at the line for TABC to close to within one possession, a pair of free throws from Aaron, his 23rd and 24th points of the night would be the finisher. TABC would hit a 3-pointer as time wound down, but without needing to inbound the ball, DRS ran the clock out, taking home their first title since 2016.
The Wildcats will now set their sights on taking home the grand prize as, YU will be home this week to the 2025 Red Saracheck Memorial Tournament. 20 teams will converge at the MAC to vie for the crown including 9 from the Yeshiva League. Fresh off their win, DRS will be the highest ranking from the Metropolitan area at #3 behind two California teams, YULA at 1 and Shalhevet at 2. Action starts tomorrow night when Brooklyn rivals Flatbush and Magen David compete in a play-in to enter into the tournament. The rest of the action will start Thursday and can be seen on Macslive.com.
On a down note, the JV championship between Flatbush and Ramaz that was supposed to precede the Varsity championship has been postponed due to unfortunate circumstances within the Flatbush basketball family over the weekend. We here at the Sports Update send our condolences and secondarily, will keep everyone updated as to when and where the game will be played.
Next week, we'll recap the Saracheck tournament and turn our calendars over to the Spring sports that are already in the thick of the action.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, buzzer beaters are the theme of the week along with near dominance by one powerhouse school as JV and Varsity hockey crown its victors and JV and Varsity Basketball get ready for their finale this coming Sunday. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
JV and Varsity Hockey took center stage this past Sunday with two thrilling championships, both decided in the waning moments. The JV championship started off the day as DRS and TABC squared off with HAFTR playing host for the early festivities. The Wildcats, victors in their regular season meeting would draw first blood and take a 2-0 lead, but TABC would erase the deficit with two goals under a minute and the score would remain deadlocked late into the third. Overtime looked to be on the horizon as the teams lined up for a faceoff in the TABC zone with 3 seconds to go, but in an instant, Eitan Rogoff turned the tide, slamming home an Ethan Lieber faceoff win for the buzzerbeater goal and DRS's 6th championship victory. The DRS faithful would then make their way over to North Shore for a battle of the top 2 Eastern schools, DRS and HANC in the Varsity championships. DRS, the defending champions and HANC in their first hockey final in school history. The Hurricanes jumped on the board mid-way through the first as three seconds into a powerplay, HANC's super-scorer Eliya Yizhaky sniped one into the DRS net. HANC would carry the lead through the second period, but 90 seconds into the third, DRS's Yitzy Yudin got a stick on a bouncer in front of the net that made its way over the goalie and into the goal to tie the game at 1. Much like the JV game, the course of play looked very much like there would be extra sessions to decide the winner, but with just under a minute and a half to go, DRS's Max Pockriss took a pass wide open in the slot and drilled the game winner into the net, sweeping the day for the DRS faithful and giving the Wildcats back to back championships.
If locking down 2 championships isn't enough for DRS, they'll have the chance to capture yet another one on Sunday evening when the varsity basketball 'Cats battle for the crown after holding off defending champion Magen David in a thrilling two-point win 60-58 in the Greenhouse Saturday night. Josh Chabbott's 26, not enough for the Warriors, as Joe Aaron's 23rd and 24th points broke the tie with under 10 seconds to go, pacing the East top seed DRS who will now advance to play West top seed TABC. The Storm took a 46-35 victory over North Shore behind 16 points from Akiva Borrgen to set the stage for a matchup usually reserved for the hockey court now taking center court at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University.
While a clean sweep would have been an extraordinary feat for the Wildcats, not all last second shots fell in their direction this past week. The JV Basketball Wildcats and the Ramaz Rams would go to double overtime where DRS held a 1 point lead over Ramaz with under 5 seconds to go, when Ramaz's Noah Hiltzik was fouled while taking a desperation three-pointer. Hiltzik would miss the first shot, but nail the next two giving the West top seed Rams the 62-61 win, spoiling a 41 point performance from DRS's Elisha Tsaidi. The Rams return to YU after a one-year hiatus having appeared in a losing effort two years ago. They will square up with the East top seed Flatbush Falcons who survived a thrilling battle by Frisch 47-44. The JV Falcons have spent quite a while away from the Max Stern Athletic Center but will look to make the most of it as they ride a 10-game winning streak into the finals, this coming Sunday.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Thanks Nachum!
The playoffs continue on as we March toward the championships. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the first of our Winter championships are set, nail-biters across the board in basketball and DRS and SAR may as well just consider this a rivalry week. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The first championship games are set, as Girls Varsity Basketball will have an all-West affair this Sunday following two nail-biter semifinals. The defending champion Frisch Cougars will return to defend their crown following a 53-50 win over East top seed North Shore. Standing in their way, though, will be the only team to defeat them this year. The West top seed SAR Sting needed overtime to knock off the defending runner-ups SKA Sonics 58-56. SAR comes in with two wins over Frisch this season, but the Cougars have been to the big game before and that could be the great equalizer. In fact, the Cougars will hope for not one, but two wins on the day against teams who have handed them a loss as the Cougars JV squad will face the Ma'ayanot Rapids in the early game. The two teams split their season series, but the Cougars are looking to pen their 4th straight championship season. Ma'ayanot hopes to raise a banner for the first time in a decade.
Moving over to Boys Varsity where the quarterfinals were made complete following SAR's 50-41 victory over Ramaz. After dropping both regular season games to the Rams, the Sting buzzed when it counted most and will now advance to take on East top seed DRS this Thursday night with the winner to take on the winner of tomorrow night's contest between Magen David and West 2 seed MTA. On the other side of the bracket, a thriller in North Shore that went down to the final few seconds with the home team Lions pulling out the victory over West 3rd seed Hillel 58-56. North Shore wont get much of an advantage, though, as their opponent will be decided tomorrow night when Flatbush travels to TABC with a ticket to the semis on the line.
Meanwhile, JV Basketball is one step ahead of their varsity brothers as one half of the semifinal bracket was filled in. The first berth was earned by the East 1 seed Flatbush who withstood a good fight from the West 6 seed Hillel but downed the Heat 64-56. Their next opponent, the Frisch Cougars did not have any such scares as the 2nd half lead never really dropped below double-digits in their battle with East #3 HANC, knocking off the Hurricanes en route to a showdown with the Falcons with a spot in the finals on the line. On the other side of the bracket, Magen David will meet up with West #1 Ramaz tonight, while SAR and DRS will follow their varsity brethren and battle in the quarters this Thursday night.
Over in JV Hockey, yet another DRS- SAR matchup this postseason. In a rematch from an earlier contest this season where SAR went into the Greenhouse and knocked off DRS, the Wildcats gained a measure of revenge as Max Isaacs kept the Sting off the board in a 1-0 victory. Josh Steinman's rebound goal late in the first, the only tally on the night for either team and it would stand, sending DRS back to their 4th straight finals where they will meet up with one member of the Route-4 Rivalry matchup as TABC and Frisch will battle this Thursday night with the ticket to the finals on the line. Frisch won both matchups by a combined 6-1 and the Western Champs will have a decided edge as they look to get back to the finals for the first time in just a bit over half a decade.
Finally, in Varsity Hockey, the semifinals are set. A trio of games on Wednesday night got things kicked off as two shutouts set up one half of the bracket. East top seed DRS disposed of Kushner 7-0 and will enjoy a semifinal home game against...who else...SAR! The Sting rode a Nate Zitter goal to a 1-0 win and a date with DRS, where two years ago, as a JV team, the Sting were 5 minutes from a Final berth. That game will take place tomorrow night. On the other side of the bracket, TABC put an end to Flatbush's season with an 8-1 drubbing, closing out Joe Catton's stellar season for the Falcons, the Senior putting an exclamation point on his career, putting up 54 goals including playoffs, setting the new regular season record at 46. The Storm will take on HANC, who knocked off Frisch 3-1 Saturday night. They'll face off this coming Saturday night in Teaneck in a rematch of a contest from a few weeks ago in a 5-2 TABC win.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Good morning and welcome back to the stretch run of the 2024-2025 Winter Sports Season. Straight ahead on this edition of the JM in the AM Sports Update, a ton of movement in the postseason brackets. We'll let you know who is in, who is out, and what to look for in the upcoming last week of all regular seasons. All that and more, good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start in Varsity Basketball where HAFTR after going 2-5 in the first half of the season has worked their way back to clinch a playoff spot after a 22 point mashing of Rambam last night. The Rambam loss eliminates the Ravens and sets up the bottom of the East bracket as #6 HAFTR and #5 YDE will go on the road. DRS will earn the #1 seed with North Shore as the front-runner in the 2 spot and Magen David and Flatbush hosting first round contests after their losses last night, seeding to be determined. Out West, TABC and MTA are virtual locks for the byes while SAR and Hillel will host first round contests against either Ramaz who has an edge following their win over SAR while we were all away and Frisch and Heschel who will be facing each other to end the regular season, with 1 of those 3 not making the postseason.
JV Basketball had one contest thus far, a major one in the West as SAR upset Frisch 66-53 Monday night behind a brilliant 40-point, 10-rebound night from Max Weiss. Frisch has now lost their last 2 contests and potentially fallen out of a first-round bye. The Cougars now 7-3 will need to wait and see whether Ramaz or TABC, both at 7-2, slip up against MTA and JEC respectively. Wins by both will relegate Frisch to the 3 seed where their opponent will be #6 Hillel. On the other end of that contest, SAR now jumps from the 6 spot into a first-round matchup with JEC in the 4-5 contest. The host will be determined by JEC's contest with TABC tomorrow night. In the East, no results so far, but by this time next week, we will know which of DRS, HANC and Magen David, all at 7-2 will join Flatbush with a first-round bye and which will be hosting first round home games against #5 YDE and #6 North Shore.
Action has already started in varsity hockey where SAR barely outlasted Kushner 6-5 Monday night. The win gives SAR the advantage in the race for the West #2 seed with only a game against Ramaz up ahead. Frisch has the tiebreaker with SAR, but to get there, will need to face HAFTR and DRS. Kushner needed last night to hope to keep ahead of MTA to host a first-round contest, but, MTA is 2 points behind Kushner with only Ohr Yisroel and Hillel to go, while Kushner will need to beat TABC to maintain their advantage. Regardless, Kushner-MTA will be the West 4-5 contest, while Ramaz will be the 6 seed and take on the loser of the Frisch-SAR race for the 2 seed. Meanwhile, out East, behind DRS, it's a mad scramble for the 2nd seed involving HAFTR, HANC and Flatbush. Right now, the HAFTR has the edge with 18 points, but right with them is Flatbush who defeated Rambam last night to move into a tie with HAFTR at 18 points and a contest with YDE remaining tomorrow night. A Flatbush win would put the pressure on HANC and HAFTR. HAFTR would need a win over either HANC or Frisch to end the season in order to overtake the Falcons while HANC would need wins over both HAFTR and TABC to do the same.
Three games remain in the JV Hockey season, with only two making a difference. Frisch and DRS have won their divisions but will do battle on Saturday night to see which team will get the #1 seed going into the postseason. The loser of the contest will host #3 SAR while the winner will find out Monday night whether they play HAFTR or TABC. The Storm can clinch a playoff berth with a win over winless Rambam in Teaneck. Otherwise, the 4th spot will go to HAFTR.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Straight ahead on this edition of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, as we head into winter break, varsity hockey crowns a new goal scoring king. All that and more, good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
It's been nearly two decades since the goal scoring record in the varsity hockey league last fell. In that time a small handful of people have reached the 30-goal plateau in sight of the mark. Two players came close last year, one of them finally succeeded, and for the first time in Yeshiva League history, the 40-goal plateau is in sight. The Flatbush Falcons kept their hopes at a First-round bye alive with a win over Solomon Schechter Thursday night. But, the story of the evening, was Joe Catton etching his name into the Yeshiva League record books. As a Junior, Joe Catton came within a few goals of breaking the scoring record. This year, Catton not only eclipsed the mark, breaking the record and finishing the game with his current total at 39 goals, but Catton has done so in only 11 contests, having missed one, and still has two games to pad the number on the other side of the break against Rambam and YDE. We'll be sure to keep everyone updated as to the final number and the new Yeshiva League mark. In other action, SAR took two wins on the week following up on their comeback win over TABC. SAR sits at 9-2-1 after wins over Kushner and Magen David, tied with Frisch who defeated Ohr Yisroel Sunday. And Ramaz and MTA worked to a 2-2 tie. The result locks Ramaz into the 6 seed for the first round of the playoffs where they will either play SAR or Frisch and also confirms that Kushner and MTA will square off in the 4/5 contest, with the host to be determined on the other side of the break.
JV Hockey saw no games on the week and will see its final 3 contests in February.
Moving over to varsity Basketball where the dogfight continues at the top of the West. TABC and MTA are still attached at the hip following wins by both teams on Saturday night. TABC took a trip to Brooklyn where they upended Magen David 62-48. The Warriors have now lost 3 of their last 5 contests to drop to 7-5, and all but fall out of the race for a First-round bye. TABC improves to 11-1 where they sit tied with MTA who gritted out a tough contest with Ramaz winning 55-53. The two teams are still the front-runners for the bye slot, but SAR is still within distance, taking two wins on the week to improve to 9-1. On the other end of things, Ramaz started off the week hot, taking wins over Ohr Yisroel and Kushner, but the loss to MTA on Saturday night and an 11-point defeat to 9-3 Hillel have now put the Rams in a strange position at 5-6. For Hillel, Eli Braha dropped 30 in the win, as the Heat lock up a First-round home game. Only two contests on the week ahead. Ohr Yisroel will take on Frisch on Tuesday, where the Cougars are tied with Ramaz who will be in action against SAR on Thursday. Both Frisch and Ramaz now look to keep themselves clear of 5-7 Heschel who is their main competition for one of the last two playoff spots
Finally, in JV Basketball, only a handful of games on the week, only one in the East, as Magen David wallops North Shore to move into a 3-way tie for 2nd place at 7-2 with DRS and HANC. Of the 3, the Warriors control the terms as they hold the tiebreak and a contest with winless Rambam on the horizon after the break. Out West, 3 more teams are 7-2, as Ramaz, TABC and Frisch currently sit tied for first at the mark. The Rams entered the mix after taking big wins over RTMA and SAR. Two of the 3 will earn a first-round bye once play resumes for them on the other side of the break.
With only two games on the slate across all 4 leagues next week, we at the JM in the AM Sports Update will take a break of our own next week to gear up for the mad rush that will begin in two weeks' time. Enjoy your break; I know we will.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, six games go to overtime across both JV and Varsity hockey, creating some interesting marks on the leaderboard, Ramaz and Frisch battle at the top of Varsity Basketball's Western conference and Magen David pulls DRS from the ranks of undefeated and into a mess in JV Basketball's East. All that and more, coming right up. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in JV Basketball where Magen David bounced back from a heavy beatdown by HANC to defeat the DRS Wildcats 61-55. As a result, DRS drops to 3-1 and into a mix of 5 teams with 1 loss at the top of the East. Presently that HANC team leads the pack at 3-0 following a win over Rambam, but behind the Hurricanes, Flatbush sits at 5-1, taking two wins this week, DRS and North Shore at 3-1 and, Barkai and Magen David at 2-1. YDE sits in the mix at 2-2 after a win over HAFTR. It appears that the playoff combatants will come from those teams as the bottom falls out of the East after that as the Hawks, Rambam and Westchester all sit winless around the half-way mark. Meanwhile, out West, a similar story, as 5 teams sit at 3 wins, led by TABC and Frisch at 3-0. Frisch kept perfect taking out two previously undefeated teams, SAR and Ramaz.
Speaking of Frisch and Ramaz, the two teams put on a showcase this week in a home and home battle at the top of the West. Frisch was the venue for the first end of the showcase, but it would be the visiting Rams holding off the Cougars 58-54. Asaf Seinfeld paced Ramaz with 15 points in the win. The Cougars, however, would return the favor last night, knocking off the Rams in Ramaz, by 3, 50-47. The split keeps the Cougars at .500 at 2-2, while Ramaz gets win #3 but drops their first on the season as well. On the bright side, both teams walked away with victories, but on the other hand, in a division where TABC and SAR presently sit undefeated at 4-0, any loss takes a team further away from the top spot in the division. In other action, Joe Aaron gets half of DRS's points and keeps the Wildcats perfect with a 46-39 win over Flatbush and Yosef Bruckenstein's double-double lifts Rambam over HANC 56-50 to get the Ravens back over the .500 mark.
Moving over to hockey where nearly a third of the games played on both levels this past week gave fans more for their money. On the Varsity end, three games went to overtime, all ending with the same score. Saturday night saw Frisch and Kushner go to an extra session where Eli Kahn put home the game-winner for the 2-1 Cougar victory. Sunday saw North Shore squeeze by Hillel in extras by the same result, and last night YDE hosted Rambam and dropped the Ravens by the same score. In other action, TABC takes control of the West dropping SAR 2-0.
In JV, SAR and HAFTR could not escape the extra period. Wednesday night saw HAFTR score 2 goals in 20 seconds to erase a 4-2 deficit to YDE in what would end up being a 4-4 tie between the two East teams. The next night SAR overcame an early deficit of their own to tie TABC at 2-2. Last night both HAFTR and SAR met up, with another come-from-behind result as SAR erased a 2-0 and 3-1 HAFTR lead to head to OT where Jonah Nayowitz slammed home his second of the night to give the Sting the win and keep them undefeated in the West. Elsewhere in the West, Frisch pulled away from TABC in third period with a 4-1 victory to stay undefeated and knock the Storm to the third result in their first four games without a win.
Generally the week of Thanksgiving is usually a quiet affair and we here at the JM in the AM Sports Update take a week to let action kick back up, but with the amount of action happening between tonight and next Monday night, it would be doing a disservice to fall behind. So, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, but in a positive break with tradition, we'll see you right here next week at our regularly scheduled spot.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
We are more than halfway through the month of November and already some major matchups have sent shockwaves through the early season. Straight ahead on the JM in the AM Sports Update, HAFTR throws JV Hockey into a storm, Varsity hockey's West is breaking into playoff form already and Frisch varsity basketball looks to end November on a better note than it began. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Starting out in Varsity Hockey where a divide is working itself out in the West. TABC, SAR, Frisch, MTA and Kushner have all established themselves ahead of the pack. The five teams have a combined 3 losses and have gone 6-1 over the last week, including MTA taking two wins over Flatbush and Magen David and TABC taking two wins over Hillel and JEC. The only one of the teams to take a loss on the week was Kushner, a 5-2 defeat to HAFTR, who is in the running at the top of the East. Contrast that with the remaining 4 teams in the West who all have 4 losses each. Given that 5 teams make the playoffs, the West berths may be clinched before the middle of December. Out in the East, DRS, HAFTR and North Shore have created a gap. All 3 have at least 4 wins, with DRS taking wins over Rambam and Solomon Schechter and HAFTR also taking care of Flatbush last night. North Shore's resurgence has been a breath of fresh air after a few down years. The Lions took 3 wins on the week, are now 4-0 and have a schedule that will give them a chance to return to the varsity postseason for the first time since the 2019-2020 league.
Moving out to JV where HAFTR bounced back from their overtime loss in Frisch last week with a major 3-2 win over TABC. Tied at 2-2 midway through the 3rd, Drake Spodek gave HAFTR the upper hand and Sam Spira shut the door for the Hawks and handing TABC their first loss of the season. TABC would rebound with a win over MTA on Sunday but will truly have the chance to show that they've turned the page when they take on undefeated SAR on Thursday with a chance to climb back into the top of the division.
Over in varsity Basketball YDE has kept pace the top of the East, taking another win to push a 3-0 start. The Thunder join DRS, also 3-0 following a narrow 37-35 escape over fellow contender Frisch last Tuesday night. The Wildcats will take on another challenge on Sunday with a mid-afternoon battle in Flatbush. The Falcons are looking to rebound from their first loss on the season to TABC 79-55, which dropped Flatbush to 3-1. Out West, a major double-battle this week as Ramaz and Frisch will play a home and home starting tomorrow night in Frisch and Sunday in Ramaz. Frisch will then follow that up with a game next Tuesday night against SAR. If Frisch plays their cards right, Thanksgiving break could be a chance to rest, relax and revel in a position atop the West heading into December.
Finally in JV Basketball, DRS and HANC both improved their standing this week, each taking two wins. The Wildcats knocked off Rambam and Westchester to improve to 3-0 while the Hurricanes locked up victories over YDE and Magen David. The two are barreling toward a showdown next Tuesday in DRS with each having one game in between, but with the halfway point extremely close, that game will be the opportunity for one team to break away towards the top of the division.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back everyone to another season of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update! The 2024-2025 season is off and rolling and we'll break down the first two weeks of November straight ahead. Good Morning, back for yet another yeshiva league season with you, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Varsity Hockey and nothing like a good "Route 4 Rivalry" matchup to kick things off in the early season, unless you're a Frisch fan. The TABC Storm opened up what they hope is a rebound season, coming off of a defeat in last year's final with a 5-1 victory over the Cougars, Senior Aiden Rauzman with the hat trick for the Stom. TABC is currently 2-0 and in a tie with Kushner and SAR. The Sting took a key victory last night at home over HANC 3-1 to keep clean in the loss column. Scoreless into the 3rd period the two teams traded quick goals in the period and remained tied until Senior Bennett Burgida put home the game winner for SAR. The early season has not been kind to HANC at the moment, having dropped their 2nd in three nights after a 6-3 loss to DRS on Motzai Shabbos. DRS opened a 4-0 lead and although HANC was able to bring the game to within 1, DRS popped home two goals in the third to improve to 3-0.
In JV Hockey 7 of the 8 teams have kicked off their season. Out West, Frisch and SAR are 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, after knocking off Eastern conference teams. Frisch and HAFTR went to overtime Saturday night in Paramus with Charlie Butler ending the contest for the 3-2 Cougar victory and then continuing with another home win over YDE, and in a statement win, SAR went into DRS last night and doubled-up the home team Wildcats 4-2. The last team to get into the mix this season will be TABC who kick off their season tomorrow night in HAFTR.
Varsity Basketball has some unfamiliar teams at the top in the early goings. The East sees Rambam at 2-0 after home wins over Magen Abraham and Kushner. Their schedule will get a bit tougher, though, starting this week with a Thursday night contest in Flatbush. Out West, MTA is 2-0 after wins over Kushner and JEC. They'll get to revel in their current position for a bit as West teams have a fairly light schedule over the next week, but the inter-division contests are powerful ones as tonight sees Frisch travel to DRS and HAFTR host SAR and Monday night, Flatbush and TABC will tangle with one team being excused from the ranks of the undefeated.
Finally in JV Basketball, most teams have opened up their season with no team playing more than 2 games. Barkai, DRS and Magen David are all 1-0 in the East, while JEC out West is 2-0 with dominating wins over MTA and Heschel, followed by TABC and Ramaz at 1-0. With 14 contests between tonight and our next update, there should be plenty of movement around the leaderboards.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Before we begin, I want to take a moment to wish a happy 7th wedding anniversary to my loving and amazing wife Amanda.
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we finish up the indoor sports with a repeat champion then head out to the baseball field a for a three-peat champion, each by the same two schools, and two other schools spoil each other's repeat bids in Softball. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The final game of the indoor sports season for us to report sees the SAR Sting repeating as the 2024 Boys JV Soccer champions. SAR went through the season and post season undefeated, knocking off Frisch 13-8 behind 6 goals by Noam Davies. The offensive output in the final was typical Sting, as the team went through their 10 games averaging just a little over 14 goals on their way to the crown.
Moving outdoors where things were a bit better for the Frisch Cougars who complete the 3-peat in Baseball, defeating the SAR Sting 4-1. The Cougars 3rd final in a row came in major part to a dominant playoffs by Akiva Rotenberg. The Junior pitcher posted 3 wins, giving up only 3 runs while striking out 28 opponents in the knockout stages.
Moving over to JV Softball where the Hillel Heat blanked the Netzach Hatorah Knights, 4-0. The win ends Netzach Hatorah's bid at a repeat, and finishes off a perfect season for the Heat, while also avenging Netzach's 2-0 win over Hillel in last year's semifinal. Ironically, the two schools would then meet in a semifinal on the varsity stage where Netzach would return the favor, and end the Heat's chances at a repeat in a dominant 10-3 result. Netzach will now move on to face fellow Eastern Conference rival Darchai in the finals. Both schools finished the season 7-1, with each taking a 1- run loss to the other over the year. The rubber match will come with the last championship of the 2024 Spring Season on the line.
Next week: the final sports update of the 2023-2024 school year.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we near the end of the 2024 Spring sports year, and have crowned most of our indoor champions in the process. Boys Volleyball, Girls Hockey and Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer have reached their conclusion and the remaining sports are right behind them. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Soccer where the Ma'ayanot Rapids pull off the upset and stifle the dominance of the defending champions. The Rapids edged Frisch 2-1 not only ending Frisch's chance at a repeat, but also puts an end to Frisch's 21 game win streak, with their last loss coming almost 2 years to the day in the 2022 semifinals. The win marks Ma'ayanot's first championship since 2019 and their 4th in the last 10 years.
Moving over to Boys Soccer where Kushner Cobras are kings for the first time in 7 years following their 3-1 victory over Ramaz. The battle between the 3rd and 4th seeds in the West proved to be a classic but Ramaz could not muster enough offense to keep pace with the champions.
We now leave the world of surprises and experience a bit of Déjà vu. A year ago, the Frisch Cougars found themselves locked in a heated overtime battle with SAR when Emma Hornblass tallied the championship winner to put Frisch back on top of the hockey world 1-0. This year, it would be Ramaz and it wouldn't take overtime, but a second period goal by Hornblass would prove to be the difference in a 1-0 final while Sophomore goalie Lily Acton posted her 8th straight shutout periods in the finals, capping off a season where the Cougars yielded only three goals. Frisch has now gone back to back for the first time since 2014-2016 in a playoff season where all games in the knockout rounds were determined by a single goal.
While the Ramaz girls could not break through, the Rams varsity volleyball squad put a capper on their perfect season sweeping SAR in straight sets by identical scores of 21-13. The crown puts a no-doubter on likely the most dominant performance in boys volleyball history, with the Rams demolishing opponents 27 sets to 1 over the course of the season. Their only dropped set, the third set of their regular season contest with the Sting. Ramaz wins their 2nd in a row their 3rd in 4 finals and account for more than half the championships in the last decade.
Heading outdoors, Darchai has punched their ticket back to the varsity softball championships. The 2021 winners defeated YDE to return to the finals where they await the winner of this Sunday's contest between Netzach Hatorah and defending champion Hillel. In Girls Varsity, there will be a new champion as the Bruriah Lightning shut out the defending champion Frisch Cougars 1-0 to advance to the championship. They'll face Ma'ayanot who outlasted Hillel 13-9.
Finally, it'll be the top 2 teams in the West fighting for the title in Baseball. Top seed Frisch doubled up Heschel 4-2 while SAR drilled Kushner 8-0. This will set up a repeat of last year's final and give Frisch its chance at winning its third banner in a row.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Chag Sameah everyone, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Ramaz looks to Ram through several finals, upsets litter the knockout stages in all sports and mostly familiar names find their way through on the diamond. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We open serve on today's update with Boys Volleyball, where we have an upset on the way to the finals. Two days after knocking off HAFTR in straight sets in the quarterfinals, the SAR Sting upend the East top seed Flatbush Falcons in straight sets, 21-13, 14 and 16 to advance to their third straight final where they will meet up with the winner of TABC and the season's freight train, Ramaz in their contest on Wednesday night. Should Ramaz win, it would set up a rematch of last year's final and would also pit Ramaz against the last team to hand them a defeat.
Moving over to soccer where the upsets continue. Within a matter of minutes of each other on Sunday night, Bergen County saw two surprise results as Ramaz knocked off TABC and Kushner upended Frisch, both by 4-3 margins. This will mark the first final that has not seen either TABC or Frisch compete since 2017 when the league was won by the Kushner Cobras. Over in Girls Varsity, the Cobras were not as fortunate, getting walloped by Frisch by the score of 8-0. The defending champions will now await the winner of tonight's contest between Heschel and Ma'ayanot to determine their last obstacle to a repeat.
Continuing with the Ramaz theme, the Rams will find themselves in another final, but not one that would have been anticipated a year ago. A 4-4 squad barely qualifying for the playoffs in 2023, Ramaz now finds themselves fighting for a Girls Hockey championship for the first time since 2019 following a 3-2 overtime win over East champion HAFTR. Standing in their way will be the defending champions, Frisch. The Cougars, 1-0 winners over SAR in last year's final, walked away with a victory by the same score last night to head back to the championship game.
Heading outdoors to the diamond, and Boys Softball where the favorites ruled the week. Top seed Hillel blanked TABC 4-0 and will advance to take on Netzach HaTorah, winner of the 4-5 contest over Heicher HaTorah by the same score. On the other side of the bracket, #2 Darchei Torah squeaked by HAFTR 8-7 but will move on to face YDE, winners of an easier contest, a 10-3 victory over MAY, ending the Eagles hopes of heading back to the finals.
Finally, in Baseball, a crushing defeat for the East top seed DRS Wildcats who were unable to keep the Kushner Cobras from steamrolling them 17-7. The 4-4 Cobras advance to the semis and will be joined by Frisch, 2-0 winners over TABC in the last route-4 rivalry matchup of the year, and Heschel, who doubled-up Hillel 6-3 to return to the semifinals and the SAR Sting, 10-0 winners over HAFTR last night. The Cobras are the only new face to the semifinals preventing a repeat of last year's final 4 by knocking out DRS.
Starting next week, we'll hand out hardware and begin the countdown to the wrap-up of the 2023-2024 Sports Year.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
We have reached the end of May, which signals the beginning of the end to the 2023-2024 school year. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a horrific week for teams East of NYC in soccer, familiar foes get set to meet up in girls varsity hockey and a dominating upset in girls softball. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Varsity soccer, where it was a terrible week for the East, as neither Boys nor Girls soccer had a quarterfinal winner outside of the Western Conference. In Boys Varsity dominant wins by Frisch, Kushner and TABC eliminated HANC, North Shore and Rambam, respectively, and, in a major upset, West #4 seed Ramaz went into the Greenhouse and knocked off East champ DRS 4-3 to advance. The semifinals will see TABC host Ramaz this coming Sunday and Frisch and Kushner within the week.
The Frisch-Kushner contest will also occur between their female counterparts, as the Girls Varsity playoffs saw Frisch blank Central and Kushner dominate HAFTR. Much like in the Boys Varsity, a top HALB family team received a shocking upset as West #4 Heschel defeated East Champion SKA 6-5. They will now take on Ma'ayanot, who completed the West sweep defeating North Shore.
In Girls Hockey, the semifinals are set following SAR's 3-2 overtime win over Heschel. The Sting will now take on Frisch in a repeat of last year's championship, a 1-0 Double Overtime affair won by the Cougars. The two will vie for the chance to each bring home a 2nd banner in the last three years when the winner takes on the winner of Ramaz and HAFTR, taking place on Long Island this Friday afternoon.
Moving outdoors, softball has moved into the knockout stages as well. The 4 top seeds enter the postseason with a combined 3 losses between them and seem poised to compete for the crown, however, they will need to first get past their quarterfinal opponents. Top seed, undefeated Hillel will square off with 8th seed TABC on Friday with the winner taking on the winner of last night's "Torah Bowl" between Heichal HaTorah and Netzach Hatorah. On the other side #2 Darchei Torah will host Frisch and on Wednesday MAY will travel to Brooklyn to take on Central champion, #3 YDE.
And in Girls Softball, East top seed Central found themselves on the wrong side of a major shutout, losing 10-0 to West #4 Frisch. The Cougars, the defending champs will await the winner of West #2 Bruriah and East #3 Shulamith, meanwhile West champion Hillel hopes to avoid the same fate when they play HAFTR and HANC will host Ma'ayanot to round out the quarterfinals.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Happy Yom Ha'atzmaut everyone!
It's Mid-May which means the continuation of the Spring sports season and a ramp up to the postseason. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Boys Soccer experiences a logjam while Girls Soccer becomes very clear, the top seed in Girls Varsity Hockey comes down to one night, and in Boys Volleyball, Ramaz suffers a loss...of sorts...Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in boys volleyball where Ramaz is no longer perfect. No, the Rams are still undefeated, having knocked off SAR this past week to improve to 7-0 and clinch the Western Conference, however, the contest marks the first time this year that Ramaz has not swept a match. Ramaz cruised in the first 2 sets against the Sting before dropping the third set 21-15, ending a 22-set win streak dating back to the 2nd set of the finals last year, where they faced SAR. The Rams will now go from one matchup of undefeateds to another, as they face Flatbush tomorrow night where the winner will be the only remaining team without a loss on the season.
Moving over to Girls Hockey where two games this Wednesday night will set the playoff picture. Of the 6 teams heading to the post-season, five will be from the West, with 4 in action and the Western Conference championship on the line. Frisch and SAR will square off with the winner being crowned the top team in the West while, at the same time Ramaz and Ma'ayanot will face off where Ramaz will have the opportunity to jump into the 3rd seed with a win. The 2 seed will go to tiebreak between HAFTR, HANC and SKA as the East champion, with that team being the only East team in the postseason. Joining the 5 will be Heschel, who know that they will be on the road come the first round of the post-season, but will await the contests to know whether they will be the 5 or 6 seed.
In Boys Varsity soccer, the top seed in the East and West may come down to tiebreakers. In the East, North Shore and DRS sit tied at 13 points with a North Shore contest against HANC remaining. Should North Shore lose, the two teams would be deadlocked with their only matchup between them a 4-4 tie. Out in the West, it could be three teams who may sit at the top where TABC and Kushner are tied at 11 points, but Frisch sits right behind them at 10 points with 1 game in hand. Meanwhile, Girls Varsity soccer is having no such problems. The East and West have clear-cut winners as SKA and Frisch have gone through the year spotless. The only spot still up for grabs is the final playoff spot in the East, which will either go to North Shore or HANC. HAFTR, Central, Ma'ayanot, Kushner and Heschel have already locked up the remaining berths and await the postseason tournament.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Frisch continues their dominance on the hardball rubber, Flatbush soars into the conversation on the Volleyball board and Frisch hands Ma'ayanot their first loss of the season in Girls Soccer. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We've covered every sport so far this Spring season, with the exception of Baseball. Thus far, the diamond has belonged to the defending champs and this week only served to widen the gap between Frisch, last year's runners up SAR and everyone else. The Cougars went 2-0 this past week, defeating Heschel and MTA by a combined 18-1 and are now 3-0, tied with SAR who took wins over Hillel and TABC themselves. The two teams are the only Western Conference squads without a blemish. DRS joins them at 3-0 in the East, but its clear that we are potentially headed for a championship rematch between two schools who have dominated the Spring over the last few years. Other scores from the diamond, Ramaz picks up their first win in a thriller 11-10 over JEC, TABC edges out MTA 2-1 in extra innings and DRS outlasts Flatbush 6-5.
Speaking of Frisch dominance, the Girls Varsity Soccer Cougars are looking to defend their crown as well, and to this point have stood up to all challenges, including defeating previously undefeated Ma'ayanot this past week, 4-1. The win was Frisch's third in the past 8 days, having also swept SAR in a home and home to improve to 5-0. The only other undefeated West, Kushner, has yet to really start their season, having only played 2 games, albeit two big wins over Bruriah and Na'aleh. They face SAR and Ramaz this week, in hopes of making a run at Frisch for a late season meetup atop the West. In other action, Central picks up their 4th win, edging out Flatbush 4-3, and Heschel picks up their 4th win with a dominant victory over Ramaz.
Finally, we take a peek back in on Boys Volleyball where Flatbush has joined Ramaz in standing out amongst the pack. The Falcons sit at 5-0 after knocking off previously undefeated HAFTR in 4 sets, as well as Magen David and Frisch in the last 8 days. Flatbush will have a chance to continue their road to the top tonight against 3-1 North Shore as they look to keep pace with Ramaz, who, at 6-0, still has yet to drop a set. The two are on a collision course for mid-May, right before the playoffs.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back everyone to the JM in the AM Sports Update as we kick off our coverage of the 2024 Spring Sports season. For the next few weeks, we will bring to you all of the action in soccer, boys volleyball, girls hockey and the diamond sports. Straight ahead, Rambam takes flight in boys soccer, Ramaz Boys Volleyball extends their dominance, but of course, we can't totally move forward without running down Saracheck. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll kick off at the top with the biggest competition in all of Yeshiva League sports, the 2024 Red Saracheck Memorial Basketball Tournament. 21 teams converged on Yeshiva University for the last and notably the best basketball of the school year. The action kicked off Wednesday night as two Yeshiva League teams, DRS and Frisch met up in a first-ever play-in game, which saw the Wildcats advance into the tournament round. Of the seven Yeshiva League teams in the field, three, TABC, Flatbush and league champion Magen David would make it to the final four, but the crown jewel would go to a perennial non-Yeshiva League competitor, the YULA Panthers. YULA climbed over both Yeshiva League finalists, Flatbush by 9 in the semifinals and Magen David in overtime in the finale 69-59. The win marks the 5th straight tournament won by a California team and YULA's 9th overall title. In the Third Place contest, Flatbush would erase a 9-point third quarter TABC lead, but a fantastic effort by Eitan Sulemanoff with 25 seconds to go would be the difference as the Storm took bronze with the 67-66 victory.
Coming into the 2024 Spring year, the Ramaz Rams were the personification of dominance in boys volleyball. It has been nearly five years since Ramaz tasted defeat, a feat tempered by the cancellation of two years due to Covid, but still impressive, especially after running the table to a league championship last year. For the start of the 2024 season, only more of the same. The Rams have already racked up four wins, now halfway through their regular season, running off straight set victories in each contest. They sit 2 games clear of TABC with a matchup between the two coming up on Monday. Meanwhile, in the East, HAFTR heads the leaderboard at 3-0 with Flatbush at 2-0 right behind them.
Moving over to Soccer, a surprising name tops the standings. The Rambam Ravens have remained perfect thus far, opening up with a 3-0 record, including a thrilling 7-6 win over DRS. Rambam will have three games next week against Flatbush, HANC and YDE, where they can open up a commanding lead and put pressure on the rest of the East to keep pace. Meanwhile in girls varsity, Ma'ayanot has jumped out to an impressive 3-0 start of their own, outscoring their competition 35-1 in the process.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We have reached the end of the 2023-2024 Winter sports season! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, two basketball championships highlighted by bitter rivalries and divisional pride. All that and more coming up, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The Yeshiva League reached the conclusion of its version of March Madness this past Sunday as four teams converged onto the Max Stern Athletic Center on the Campus of Yeshiva University to crown the 2023-2024 JV and Varsity Basketball Champions. The JV finale kicked off the day with All-West foes Frisch and SAR meeting up in what had become a championship staple showdown in the mid- 2010s. The first half was a close affair that saw Isaac Stepner drain a buzzer-beater three to give the Cougars a 7 point lead at the break. The third quarter would see a changing of the tide, though as SAR racked off a 16-5 run capped by a buzzer beater three of SARs by Evan Goldberg and the Sting would barely look back as they rolled to a 59-47 victory.
The marquee matchup of the afternoon was the Varsity finale, an all-Brooklyn showdown between #2 Flatbush and #1 Magen David. Two close contests throughout the season were echoed early on as Flatbush took a 10-9 lead into the 2nd quarter and a 6 point advantage into the half. Flatbush looked to pull away early in the 3rd, but a 9-3 Warrior run to end the quarter closed the gap to within 2 and a minute a half into the 4th took the lead. Flatbush would eventually regain the lead, but with 42 seconds left, Marc Sardar give the Warriors a 44-43 lead. The Warriors would have control of an inbounds with 12 seconds left and a chance to ice the game, but a Jacob Hadded steal gave Flatbush life and an ill-advised inbounds foul with 9 seconds left put Ronnie Chaya at the line for two and a chance to win the game. Chaya would only hit one of two and the game would go to overtime tied at 44. The extra session would see a 2-point Magen David lead with 1 minute to go but that would be as close as the game would get. Missed free throws and a lid on the Flatbush basket doomed the Falcons as much as the Magen David foul shooting as the Warriors went on to win the Battle for Brooklyn finale 57-48 for their first championship since 2017-2018.
With those two seasons now in the books, we have come to the close of the 2023-2024 Winter Sports season. The Sports Update will now turn to spring sports including soccer, boys volleyball, girls hockey and of course, the diamond sports as we roll toward June and the end of the school year. We will be on break next week but will return in two weeks with all of the spring action.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Two more championships have been handed out with the Winter sports finale only days ahead of us. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, three hockey powerhouses meet up on Championship Sunday and a near major upset results in a thrilling semifinal in varsity basketball. All that and more coming up, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
This past Sunday saw JV and Varsity Hockey crown its champions, and for those following this season, the winners were no surprise, although the games themselves proved to be something different. Varsity was on the menu first this past Sunday in Frisch as the top two teams and perennial contenders, DRS and TABC did battle. TABC looked to reverse a lopsided loss to the Wildcats in DRS during the regular season and for most of the game, looked like the more aggressive team, but the Wildcats would not break and found themselves in the driver’s seat following a Max Pockriss 2nd period goal. Doniel Austein held down the DRS net and a heads up Jack Greenbaum goal in the closing seconds capped off the 2-0 victory for DRS’ first varsity win since 2017.
In the evening session, the top seeded SAR Sting met up with the JV Wildcats in a game that was every bit the opposite of the early one. Nate Zitter would give the Sting the lead less than 30 seconds into the contest and would steal the show over the next period and a half, picking up a natural hat trick en route to a 4-1 SAR win. SAR completes the undefeated the season and tabs their first JV crown since 2015.
With boys hockey now complete, all eyes turn to JV and Varsity Basketball this coming Sunday at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University. The early game will see an all-West affair as #1 Frisch and #2 SAR square off for the third time this year. Frisch earned their way to championship Sunday with a 64-44 win over #3 Hillel, while SAR went on the road and dispatched previously undefeated East champion DRS 47-38. In the two contests played earlier this year, both teams took home victories over the other, with each team taking their wins by 5 points.
The evening session will see an All-Brooklyn battle that nearly wasn't. While top seed Magen David easily punched their way to the final with a 64-50 drubbing of HAFTR, their Sunday opponent, Flatbush almost found themselves on the losing end of a spirited exhibit from the defending champion North Shore Lions. The Lions held a 9 point lead in the 4th quarter, but watched the Falcons chip away and force overtime, closing out the final 10 minutes of play on a 17-2 run to stave off the upset 57-51. The JV game will tip off at 2 with the Varsity contest following at 5PM.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
They say that good things come to those who wait and here on the JM in the AM Sports Update, we bring you all of the good and the great that is the Yeshiva League Playoffs! Straight ahead, the Winter Sports Regular Season is over and the playoffs lie directly ahead of us. We'll run down the last week and get you ready for the next 4. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Varsity Hockey certainly had its intrigue as half of the seeds were not determined until Monday night. In the East, DRS finishes with the top seed after avenging their only loss on the season to HAFTR and will be joined by HANC as the two seed, HAFTR at the 3, Magen David at the 4 and Rambam in 5th. Magen David takes the 4th seed despite taking two losses this week, as their loss to Flatbush came in Overtime 9-8. Joe Catton netted his 32nd goal of the season to give the Falcons the win, but by going to OT, Magen David got the point that they needed to advance. In the West, TABC wrapped up the 1 but not without a fight from Kushner who the Storm defeated 3-2. The Kushner loss and Frisch win over SAR on Monday gave Frisch the 2 seed, Kushner the 3 and also dropped SAR to the 5 behind MTA. So the playoff brackets will look like this. East #1 DRS will play the winner of Tomorrow night's contest between West #4 MTA vs East #5 Rambam, West #2 Frisch will face East #3 HAFTR, East #2 HANC will take on West #3 Kushner and West #1 TABC will await the winner of tonight's battle between East #4 Magen David and West #5 SAR.
In JV SAR keeps the undefeated season, but not perfect as they tie Frisch 2-2. SAR will take the #1 seed, DRS the 2, despite taking a 1-0 loss at home to the HAFTR Hawks who will be the 3rd seed. The 4th seed will go to YDE after a crazy week where they topped Frisch 3-1 and then went in to TABC and earned an 8-7 overtime victory to claim the higher seed over Frisch. This means that we will see two repeats from this past week as Frisch will travel back to YDE for the play-in game for the right to face SAR in the semifinals and HAFTR will go back to DRS in the other semifinal. Fun fact: If Frisch defeats YDE, their matchup against SAR will make all 3 playoff games repeats from the last week.
In Varsity Basketball, Magen David wraps up the East with a win over North Shore and will join Flatbush with a bye at 2. HAFTR takes the 3 while North Shore sweeps a home and home with DRS to finish tied at 7-7 and take the 4 seed while the Wildcats take the 5 (and you wont believe who they play next...) and Waterbury takes a win over Rambam to earn the 6 seed. Out West, TABC sweeps Ramaz to take the 1 seed and drop the Rams to a 10-4 record, tied with Frisch, but Ramaz earns the 2 and the bye. Frisch will have the 3, Heschel the 4, Ohr Yisroel earns a playoff berth at 5 and SAR wraps up the West at #6. The playoff lineup will see East #3 HAFTR host Waterbury while DRS will travel to North Shore for their third straight meetup with the winners to head to either TABC or Ramaz. The West #3 Frisch will square off with SAR and Heschel will meet Ohr Yisroel with the winners to head to Brooklyn for either Magen David or Flatbush.
Finally, in JV Basketball, several ties pockmark the board. In the East, DRS runs undefeated at the top while North Shore, Flatbush and HAFTR all finished at 7-3. The Lions were awarded the bye while the Falcons and Hawks will welcome teams to their nests as the 3 and 4. Magen David earns the 5 by virtue of a win last night over YDE who takes the 6. Out West, Frisch and SAR earn the 1 and 2, both tied at 9-1, Hillel finishes right behind them at 8-2 for the 3rd seed. TABC and Ramaz both at 5-5 finish at 4th and 5th and JEC defeats Heschel to lock up the last seed in the West. So the playoff matchups will see East #3 Flatbush host #6 YDE and East #4 HAFTR taking on #5 Magen David with the winners to go to Frisch or SAR and out West, #3 Hillel will host JEC while Ramaz will travel to TABC with the winners going to DRS or North Shore.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back from Yeshiva break folks. February is only a few days away, which means that the playoffs are right around the corner! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we reset all leagues as we gear up for a whirlwind week to wrap up the Winter Sport Regular Seasons! Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
We'll start out by running down Varsity Hockey. Two results last night help bring a little more intrigue at the top of both divisions. In the East HANC's win over Solomon Schechter brings it to 11 wins, tied with DRS at the top. DRS will take on 4th place Rambam and 3rd place HAFTR this week, while HANC faces North Shore. All 4 teams have wrapped up playoff spots, with Magen David holding the edge for the final spot, but Flatbush and YDE can both find themselves in the hunt with sweeps and a little help from each other. Out West, TABC leads at 10-2, but will face a challenge Thursday as they play Kushner, winners of last night's contest with SAR to jump into 2nd at 9-4, a win over 3rd place Frisch. With a win over TABC or a Frisch loss this week, Kushner will clinch the 2. Frisch will take on MTA and SAR both of whom are 7-6 and fighting for the 4th spot in the division. An MTA win or an SAR loss will give MTA the higher seed. Entering the final week, 11 games have playoff implications beginning with tomorrow night's games in Flatbush, DRS and HANC.
In JV, SAR and DRS have locked up the 1 and 2, respectively. HAFTR and Frisch have clinched berths as well. HAFTR can clinch the 3 and escape the play-in with a win or tie against DRS tomorrow night, otherwise Frisch can jump over the Hawks with a win over YDE or SAR. Should YDE lose to Frisch, the MTA- Ramaz game means that the winner will advance to the playoffs, but a tie means that neither will and YDE would have taken the 5th spot.
In Varsity Basketball, both divisions still up for grabs as Flatbush leads the East at 12-2, but Magen David only needs 1 win to take the division. Both have locked up byes. HAFTR and DRS have clinched berths and have the inside track at the 3 and 4. North Shore, YDE and Waterbury will fight for the final 2 berths with North Shore only needing a win to have a shot to run back last year's championship. Out West, Ramaz and TABC will play a home and home, where a sweep means the division to either side. A split could open the door for Frisch to swoop in and overtake both and even result in needing tiebreakers to decide the West #1. Heschel clinched a spot with a 2 point win over SAR last week and now leaves Ohr Yisroel, SAR and JEC each fighting for the last 2 spots, all 3 at 6 losses.
In JV Basketball, 11 of the 12 playoff spots have been clinched. DRS has won the East and will join HAFTR, Flatbush, North Shore, Magen David and YDE in the postseason. Out West, SAR and Frisch can still go to a coin toss to determine the division, meanwhile Hillel hopes SAR falters or it will take the 3 spot. TABC and Ramaz are fighting for the 4 and the 5, but the 6th will come down to JEC and MTA. MTA is currently at 3-7 with JEC at 3-5. JEC needs one win in its last 2 games against SAR and Heschel, otherwise MTA will take the spot due to the tiebreak.
With the last games in all leagues occurring next Tuesday, and the possibility of certain spots still hanging in the balance, the JM in the AM Sports Update will allow for all proceedings to play out and will instead come to you next WEDNESDAY with the full playoff picture to discuss.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we cruise into winter break on a shortened week, but the playoff picture becomes more clear. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Only three hockey games on the week, all in varsity. YDE keeps themselves in the mix for the final East playoff spot, downing Solomon Schechter. Now at 5-7 the Thunder are tied with Flatbush and sit two games behind Magen David with the Warriors facing its two Brooklyn foes to end off the season. Out West, all 5 playoff spots have now been earned with Frisch knocking off Ohr Yisroel last night. This combined with SAR's win over JEC has given TABC, Kushner, the Cougars, the Sting and MTA the 5 spots out West. Where each one slots is up for grabs on the other side of the break.
In Varsity Basketball, TABC and Ramaz continue their battle at the top of the West, both advance to 9-2 with wins over SAR and MTA respectively. The Storm rode 18 points from Ayden Gurin to outlast the Sting 47-46. Both now sit right behind 10-3 Frisch, but Ramaz has the chance to take the outright lead in the division with a win over Ohr Yisroel tonight. Ohr Yisroel will look to take another step toward clinching a playoff berth, a situation that has been prolonged by JEC who upended HAFTR 68-56 to keep alive at 6-6. Out East Magen David moves a win away from clinching the East with a 49-42 win over North Shore and DRS clinched a playoff berth with a 9 point win over YDE.
In Boys JV Basketball, DRS wraps ups the East and stays undefeated downing Westchester and out West, SAR stays in the race for the top spot, downing TABC by 12. The Sting will look to keep it up tonight against Ramaz. The Rams look to rebound from a loss to Hillel who have wrapped up at least the 3 seed with an 8-2 record. The 6 point loss for the Rams drops them into a tie with TABC. A loss by Ramaz tonight would drop them to 5-5 and lock them into the 5th slot securing a first round date with TABC in Teaneck once the post-season begins.
We hope that everyone enjoys their winter break and rests up for the mad dash to the postseason that will ensue on the other side. The Sports Update will be on break as well and will return in two weeks to once again bring you all the latest scores and standings around the Yeshiva League.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Winter break is fast approaching and that means that playoff races are tightening up. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Magen David Basketball gains control of the Varsity East, Frisch locks up the JV Basketball West and in JV Hockey, not many games, but quality will sure make up for quantity, but first a mea culpa. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Before we begin, a correction. On last week's episode, when covering the accomplishments of Reuven Rozezadeh, I mistakenly referred to his school as Ohr Torah. As a high schooler in the late 90s and early 2000s one can certainly see where my thoughts were going, having played against OTI at several points. Rozehzadeh's play has benefitted Ohr Yisroel all year and as a token, last week's report has been re-recorded and edited, on the archives, in place of the erroneous segment.
We'll start out in JV Hockey, where there were only two games this past week but both were important for the standings board. We start out at the top, where SAR has set the stage for a run-away season. The Sting blank DRS 3-0 to move to 9-0 and clinch the top seed in JV. The Sting have not ceded a goal since November 30th and will look to close out a perfect regular season when they face Frisch in February. Speaking of the Cougars, in the other matchup, HAFTR leaps Frisch into 3rd place by virtue of a 2-0 Hawk win. The win locks up a playoff berth for the Hawks who join the Cougars and the aforementioned SAR and DRS in the post-season. YDE, Ramaz and MTA will all make a run at the final playoff spot on the other side of the break.
In Varsity Hockey, a stunning turn of events at the top of the league. In what most expect to be a preview of the championship, the DRS Wildcats put a major hurting on the TABC Storm 5-0 in the Greenhouse on Wednesday. Five different Wildcats posted goals and Doniel Austein locked up the shutout to clinch at least a first-round home game in DRS and a major leg up in the mental battle as we head toward the postseason. In other action, Kushner takes two on the week to leap into 2nd in the West at 8-4. HANC bounces back with two on the week, downing HAFTR and YDE to lock up at least the East #2 and in the race for the final playoff spots, MTA rides wins over Ohr Yisroel and SAR to clinch the 4th of 5 spots out West and Magen David defeats Flatbush and SSLI to go 4 up for the 5th spot in the East.
Moving over to Varsity Basketball, where the Magen David Warriors have earned the inside edge for the top seed in the East, Moses Smeke's buzzer-beater 3-pointer capped a 63-60 win over the Flatbush Falcons to move Magen to 10-1, still behind Flatbush's 12-2 record in the standings, but with the Warriors in control as they await a home-and-home with North Shore bookending winter break. The two teams met in the Finals of the Satran Tournament this past weekend in HAFTR, with Magen David downing North Shore 57-36, a repeat of which could spiral into disaster for the hopes of a championship repeat in Great Neck. The Lions defeated YDE this week to gain some cushion, however, with their last two games against DRS, who topped Hillel to move above .500, the door is open for YDE and Waterbury to both sneak past North Shore down the stretch. Out West, TABC powers past Frisch 34-32 to jump into a tie with Ramaz at 8-2. Both sit two wins behind Frisch at 10-3 but one will be guaranteed to earn win number 9 when they play each other tonight in Ramaz. And in the battle for the 6 spot out West, SAR and JEC, both presently at 5 wins will square off Thursday night looking to separate themselves from the other.
Finally, in JV Basketball Frisch completes their 9-1 record with a 3 point win over TABC, locking up the West top spot. Hillel is right behind them at 7-2 following their win over JEC this week, but the road to the 2 seed is in SAR's court as the Sting are 5-1 and play JEC and TABC this coming week. In the East, DRS will look to wrap up the top spot, tonight, when they play Westchester.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
On the first Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of 2024, an Ohr Yisroel Senior with a day that would make Deion Sanders envious, Flatbush Basketball gets ready to put the finishing touches on both regular seasons and HAFTR hockey continues their streak with visions of home games in their sights. All that and more, straight ahead. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
It's a rarity in the Yeshiva League that you find a player who is such a major contributor on both the Hockey and Basketball courts, but when it comes to a small school looking to make runs at the playoffs for the first time in both varsity leagues, some of those days can become legendary. Such was the day for Senior Reuven Rozehzadeh of Ohr Yisroel this past Sunday. On the hockey court, Rozehzadeh nailed an "Ovech-trick," a 6- goal effort to lead the team to their 3rd win, an 8-3 victory over JEC. Ohr Yisroel finds themselves 4 points behind MTA for the final playoff spot in the West, but with an easier schedule down the stretch than the Lions, Ohr Yisroel could find themselves in the mix and will start that stretch tonight in MTA. In the evening session Rozezadeh played for the Ohr Yisroel basketball squad and had the hot hand in the first half dropping 21 of his game-high 29 points to lead Ohr Yisroel over Waterbury 66-49. Now at 7-5, Ohr Yisroel will await results of several contests involving Heschel, SAR, JEC and Hillel to see what they need to accomplish in their last 2 games to stay in the fight for a first-round home game.
Back to other action, first in varsity hockey, HAFTR followed up their win over DRS by sweeping YDE in their home and home, 5-4 and 7-3. HAFTR is now 8-3 and still in the fight for a quarterfinal home spot. They can help themselves even further in their matchup with 8-2 HANC tonight. HANC is looking to bounce back from being DRS's rebound, losing to the Wildcats 4-2 at home. Meanwhile, YDE's playoff hopes are now on life support following Flatbush's 3-0 win over Rambam. With that, unless Magen David and Flatbush tie tonight, one of those teams will have their 6th win, 2 more than YDE, with only 4 games left for the Thunder on the schedule. Also, Kushner dominated Frisch at home 6-1. That result makes tomorrow night's contest with the two top teams, DRS and TABC in the Greenhouse even more critical, as a TABC win would virtually wrap up the top spot in the West.
Unfortunately for the JV Hockey Storm, the playoffs are not in the forecast for the first time in team history. Following the team's 2-1 loss to Frisch and 3-2 loss to DRS, TABC has been eliminated from playoff contention. HAFTR helped their cause by defeating YDE, whom they are now tied with in the standings, 6-4. The league now gears up for a potential championship preview, as the last two undefeated teams, SAR and DRS meet up next Monday in SAR.
Back to Varsity Basketball where Flatbush, who has already clinched a first round bye by virtue of their thrashing over Waterbury, can take the East #1 Spot with a win over Magen David tonight. HAFTR finds themselves rooting for the Falcons as a Flatbush win keeps a first-round bye in play for the 8-3 Hawks, with a game to play against Magen in February. Meanwhile, YDE and DRS find themselves with playoff clinching scenarios in the East this coming week. Out West, Frisch downed Hillel by 6 to keep a first-round bye alive as they face TABC Saturday night. The Storm took the first meeting and with a win would keep the inside track, but a Frisch win would bust things wide open with TABC still having to also face Ramaz in the coming weeks.
Finally, in JV Basketball, Magen David and Flatbush both keep hopes alive for a first-round bye. Flatbush takes wins over HANC and Rambam to finish at 7-3 and Magen David improves to 5-3. They along with DRS, HAFTR, North Shore and YDE have clinched all East playoff berths, with only seeding left up for grabs.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
We are in the last week of 2023, which means that the playoff run is about to begin for the Winter Sports season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Both Varsity Hockey and Basketball have divisions that have been thrown wide open by hard-fought battles that now leave favorites with tough matchups wondering whether home court will be theirs. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
It's certainly a noteworthy moment when you can truly feel that anything can happen in a season. For Boys Varsity hockey this year, there most definitely is the feeling that anyone can emerge as the champion of the 2023-2024 season. The latest example occurred between HAFTR and the last undefeated, DRS, this last Saturday night in HAFTR. Jonah Oliner broke a 1-1 tie early in the 3rd period and the Hawk defense stepped up to the task of knocking off the Wildcats, potentially throwing the East into chaos. While a DRS win would have given the Wildcats cushion against all teams other than HANC, who it could have squared away in their matchup tomorrow night, but now, HANC, 8-1 following their 11-6 win over YDE, with a win over DRS would only have 1 game left against a team currently over .500, while the Wildcats still need to play TABC, 8-1 and leading the West following their 4-1 win over SAR and HAFTR, opening the door for HANC and a slim chance for HAFTR to still take the East. In other action, MTA took 2 on the week to jump over .500 at 5-4,throwing them into a tie with Kushner for the final playoff spot in the West.
In JV, DRS took two wins on the week, knocking off Frisch 4-2 and HAFTR 3-2. DRS stays undefeated at 6-0 and gear up to meet TABC, who fell to SAR 6-0. The win for the Sting keeps SAR perfect as they roll toward a meetup with DRS on the other side of the calendar turn to decide the league's top spot. For TABC, the week ahead is crucial as they play Frisch in addition to the Wildcats. Should TABC not pick up any points in the two matchups, they will risk missing the postseason due to the two ties that will cost them all tiebreakers. HAFTR, at 3-4, isn't quite in the same boat, but they still hold their own destiny in their hands, starting with a matchup against faltering YDE tonight in Brooklyn.
In Varsity Basketball, both conferences are shaping up to be exciting down the stretch run, as the West finds six teams between the 2 and 4 loss marks and the East sees two Brooklyn teams virtually guaranteed to walk away with byes. Out West, Frisch, Ramaz and TABC all hold two losses by virtue of TABC's 40-36 win over Frisch. Yonah Mandel's 10 points were crucial for the Storm in a defensive battle that keeps TABC in the running for the West top spot with a rematch between the two set for January. The second group in the West, Heschel, SAR and JEC all have 4 losses with Ohr Yisroel right behind them at 6-5 to keep things interesting. Ohr Yisroel salvaged its week that started with a 13 point loss to Frisch by defeating YDE 48-45.In the East, Flatbush and Magen David each pushed their claim forward with wins over DRS. Both still sit at only 1 loss, and expect to remain so until next week's showdown between the two that, barring any shenanigans on behalf of 3-5 North Shore or 6-3 HAFTR in their matchups with Magen David, will determine where in Kings County home court will reside.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
December keeps rolling right along, and with it, the Winter sports season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, high stakes matchups in both Varsity Hockey and Basketball and undefeateds stay undefeated in JV hockey and basketball. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity Hockey had a night last night as 4 of its top teams were in action. In the East, the top 2 teams, DRS and HANC met up in the Greenhouse, with at least one team guaranteed to put a mark in something other than the win column. DRS got on the board early and HANC would struggle too long to make any sort of comeback as the home team would cruise to a 4-1 win and a 9-0 record. Out West, the #2 and #3 teams Frisch and SAR squared off in Paramus. SAR took the lead in the first but could not hold it, as Tal Glassman and Eli Kahn would give Frisch the 2-1 win, tying the two teams at 6-3, right behind TABC. In other action last night, Magen David erased a 3-0 Rambam lead and would see Henry Tawil put home the game winner with 20 seconds remaining for a 5-4 Warrior victory to climb back to .500 at 4-4.
In JV Hockey, the early game of the Frisch-SAR doubleheader saw SAR face its biggest challenge of the season, as the game went scoreless for 34 minutes, but SAR would would stay undefeated thanks to Jack Linhart's snipe from the low circle and Michael Goldmann's second consecutive shutout for the 1-0 win. That coupled with their 4-0 win over YDE, now has them at 7-0, becoming the first team in JV Hockey to clinch a playoff berth on the season. With TABC and DRS upcoming before winter break, SAR will turn their focus now to the #1 overall seed. In other action, MTA breaks into the win column with a 1-0 shutout of HAFTR Saturday night. The Lions will look to pull back into the playoff hunt when they face YDE tonight. HAFTR, who started the season off with 3 wins, has now suffered 3 straight losses with a tough schedule on tap, starting with DRS this coming Saturday night.
Moving over to Varsity Basketball where Flatbush has rebounded nicely from their loss to Magen David in last week's update, taking 3 wins on the week, bookended by a 10 point win over defending champ North Shore and a statement win over West Co-Leader Ramaz 64-44. The Falcons now hold the league's best record at 10-1 and become the first Varsity basketball team to clinch a playoff berth. They'll also become the first team to complete their season with 3 games between now and January 2nd, where they will finish off with a big contest against Magen David. Speaking of the Warriors, Magen David stays sharp following their win over Flatbush, as Josh Chabbot stays hot dropping 18, knocking off SAR 62-50 to improve to 8-1, as does Frisch with their 52-46 win over Heschel. DRS, Waterbury and YDE each pick up their 3rd wins and Ohr Yisroel takes two to jump over .500 at 5-4.
In JV Basketball, Hillel and DRS both hit their 2nd half with wins to stay undefeated at 6-0 and 5-0 respectively. For the Heat, a 62-44 win over MTA and a 63-53 win over Ramaz, who has now suffered three straight losses after opening up 4-0 and the Wildcats, a convincing win over Rambam. DRS begins an important stretch tonight, which will include home-and-homes with 4-1 Magen David over the next week. A sweep would all but clinch the East top seed for the Wildcats. In other action, Frisch knocks SAR from the ranks of the undefeated with a 58-53 win. Frisch now stands at 5-1 behind Hillel with SAR at 4-1, ahead of both team's key matchups with Hillel, starting tonight with SAR, in Deal.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Chag Sameach and Happy Channukah everyone! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we recap two of the Yeshiva League's best rivalries as Magen David and Flatbush meet up in Varsity Basketball and TABC and Frisch squared off in Varsity Hockey. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
It's barely mid-December, but already Flatbush- Magen David has cemented itself as the hottest ticket in Varsity Basketball. The two squared off in the championships of the Magen David and Cooper preseason tournaments, resulting in splits. The squads met up for the first time in regular season action this past Saturday night in Flatbush. Magen David held a 3-point lead entering the fourth quarter and would pull away at the line, running up a 20-5 spread in the final frame for a 57-39 victory. Josh Chabbot led all scorers with 15 for the Warriors who now lead the East at 7-1 after knocking Flatbush from the ranks of the undefeated. Both teams have a two game lead on 3rd place HAFTR after the Hawks dropped two on the week, including a 65-59 decision to Ramaz that same night. Milan Kushner dropped 20 to pace the Rams who now have the league's best record at 8-1. The other HAFTR loss on the week saw defending champion North Shore take its second win on the season, a 54-29 result. North Shore now sits at 2-4, and looks to climb back into the race near the top when they square off with Flatbush tonight in North Shore. In other action, Frisch dropped MTA to keep pace with Ramaz and Ohr Yisroel pulls above .500 with a 58-47 win over Heschel.
In JV Basketball, Frisch now joins Hillel, Ramaz and SAR atop the West after a 64-54 win over the Rams and Hillel's thrashing of Heschel. All 4 teams sit at 4 wins with Hillel and SAR at 0 losses, Frisch at 1 and Ramaz now at 2. And in the East, after losing two of their first three to start the season, Flatbush has put together a solid December, taking 4 wins in 10 days to jump to 5-2. The Falcons took wins over Brooklyn foes Barkai and Magen David and avenged an early-season loss to YDE with a 15 point win on Thursday night.
Varsity Hockey's version of rivalry week saw the second leg of the Route 4 Rivalry take place in TABC on Tuesday night. This meeting wound up being nothing like the first contest which saw Frisch take a 1-goal victory over the visiting Storm. Instead, TABC took out their frustrations on the Cougar net, shelling Frisch 8-3. TABC now sits alone at 7-1 awaiting SAR whom they play next Thursday. SAR currently sits in 2nd place at 6-2, but with two contests in between, including one against Frisch, the gap between TABC and the rest of the league could be massive by the time the ball drops on that contest. In other action, DRS and HANC stayed perfect in the east, downing North Shore and Magen David and Kushner pulls above .500 at 5-4 following a 7-5 win over Flatbush, the Falcons 2nd straight loss by that score. Kushner sits four points clear of MTA for the 4th spot in the West, while Flatbush now sits in a three-way tie with YDE and Magen David for the 5th spot in the East. That deadlock will be broken tonight as the Falcons and Thunder meet up in YDE.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back everyone to another season of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update! As we enter December, we stand squarely in the middle of several extremely tight races in hockey and basketball. We'll take you through all the latest, straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
We'll start out in boys varsity basketball, where the Flatbush Falcons continue their torrid streak through the first half of the season. The Falcons upped their record to a perfect 7-0, dealing losses to SAR, YDE and DRS over the past week and now gear up for a showdown with rival Magen David this coming Motzai Shabbos. The game was set to be billed as a "Battle of the Undefeated," until Frisch changed plans this past Sunday, knocking off the Warriors 62-46 to drop Magen David to 6-1. The Cougars, themselves now sit at 6-1, having rebounded from their lone loss to Western Division-leading Ramaz last Wednesday night. In other action, the rough times continue for defending champion North Shore as the Lions are still winless at 0-4 after losing a tough battle with TABC 51-38 and HAFTR takes two wins on the week to improve to 5-1.
Moving over to JV Basketball where the four remaining undefeated teams each picked up wins this week. Magen David downed North Shore 65-40 to improve to an East- best 4-0, while DRS knocked off HAFTR 69-47 to jump to 3-0. Out West, Ari Halpert's 13 points paced SAR to its 4th win, 59-28 over Heschel, and Hillel topped MTA 53-36. In other action, in a rematch of last year's JV final, TABC once again knocked off Ramaz, this time by the score of 55-51. Both teams sit right behind the undefeated in the division, with Ramaz at 4-1 and TABC at 3-1.
In Varsity Hockey, DRS remains undefeated, defeating Frisch on the road on Sunday. Moshe Aryeh's goal late in the first period stood up as the only tally of the night in the Wildcats 1-0 victory to improve to 7-0. They are one of two teams left undefeated in Varsity Hockey, as HANC currently sits behind them at 6-0. The Hurricanes knocked off HAFTR 4-3 on Motzai Shabbos courtesy of Ilan Kogel's two scores. Both DRS and HANC have one more contest prior to squaring off against each other on December 18th. In other action, Rambam continues their hot streak, knocking off Flatbush last night 7-5 to take their 7th win overall and 5th in a row. And Kushner continues their give-and take-season, defeating Hillel 2-0 to improve to 4-4. Coming up tonight will be the eagerly anticipated rematch between Frisch and TABC in TABC for control of the Western Division. Frisch took the first contest back in early November, 4-3, but a TABC win would open a 2-game cushion and remove the Cougars tiebreak advantage. That game will start at 7PM.
Finally, in JV hockey, only two contests on the past week. TABC and Ramaz tied at 2 apiece. The tie puts the defending champion Storm in a strange position, sitting at 6 points with a record of 2-2-2, tied in a pack of teams that have all played less games, with easier schedules remaining, and only four contests to go, 3 of which are against SAR, Frisch and DRS, none of whom have dropped a contest on the season. SAR took the other contest on the week, topping HAFTR 4-2, to improve to 5-0.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Good morning everyone! Today on an abbreviated Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up the 2022-2023 sports season. I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The final 4 championships took the field over the last 48 hours, with all diamond sports declaring winners. We'll start off with Boys Varsity Softball where an old powerhouse has reclaimed their throne. One year after a shortened first-round exit, the Hillel Heat are once again on top of the Softball world, taking out last year's champions MAY 3-1. The win marks Hillel's first since 2018 and fourth in the last 8 seasons.
Contrast to that, JV Softball which saw a newcomer walk away with the top award. In only their first Yeshiva League season, Netzach HaTorah emerged victorious, blanking MAY 5-0. The Knights finished their first regular season with a record of 6-2 and outscored opponents 8-0 in their 3 playoff contests.
Finally, it was quite the Sunday for Frisch, starting out with the Girls Softball championship Sunday afternoon, which saw the Cougars knock off Hillel 6-4 only one year after the Cougars failed to qualify for the postseason. Then Sunday evening in the Baseball final, Frisch squared off with SAR in just about the most "2023" way possible, where the Cougars locked down an 8-6 victory to get the last word in on the school year. Sophomore Akiva Rotenberg took home MVP honors for both his day at the plate and on the mound, shutting down the Sting for a five-out save.
One last public service announcement, the HASC Hockey tournament will take place this Sunday in Teaneck, featuring 11 school alumni teams in a 12-team tournament to raise money for Camp HASC. Games will take place in TABC, Ma'ayanot, Noam and RYNJ throughout the day starting at 9am.
On that note, this brings to a close the 2023 Spring season and the 2022-2023 school and sports year. A Yasher Koach to all the boys and girls that participated this year and a Mazal Tov to all of the graduates. Once again, a heartfelt thank you to Nachum and the JM in the AM and Nachum Segal Network family for helping bring to light the amazing efforts and accomplishments of all participants and giving a platform to share them with everyone. September is right around the corner and we cannot wait to join everyone in welcoming the 2023-2024 school year.
For all of us at JM in the AM, this has been the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Have a great summer!
Thanks Nachum!
Happy 6/13 everyone! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up the indoor season and get set for the last handful of games on the diamond, and we recap the 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Boys volleyball capped off the indoor sports season as two powerhouses, SAR and Ramaz met in the finals. Ramaz, the most decorated school in boys volleyball history jumped out to a first game win 21-18 before the defending champion Sting took game 2 21-16. Game 3 would prove to be pivotal as Ramaz would take the 3 point win and then roll in Game 4 by 10 points to take home the school's third banner in the last 4 championships.
Moving outdoors, the boys softball championship is set as defending champion MAY will look to repeat, but will need to go through perennial powerhouse Hillel to do so. The 2015, 2017 and 2018 champion Heat took out YDE 3-0 and will go toe to toe with the Eagles next Monday night at MAY. MAY will also play host to the JV Championship as the Junior Eagles outlasted YDE 7-6 to advance to take on Netzach Hatorah who pulled off the shocking upset of defending champion Hillel 2-0. That game will happen this Sunday afternoon. The Hillel varsity girls will look to make it a double as they advance to the finals defeating Ilan on Sunday 7-2. They will square off with Frisch who defeated Bruriah 2-1 in their semifinal contest.
In Baseball SAR battered Heschel 8-1 to advance to the finals where they await the winner of tomorrow night's contest between DRS and Frisch.
Finally, the 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Tournament took place this past Sunday and its 16th version paid homage to the very first, 16 years earlier. The morning session of the junior high hockey tournament featuring 8 teams from the NY and NJ leagues saw HAFTR, HANC, Yavneh and Noam take victories. In the afternoon, Moriah rebounded to defeat HAFTR and then knock them off in a play-in shootout to join HANC in one semifinal, while Noam shocked NY league finalist HALB 3-2 with a last minute tiebreaking goal to advance to the semifinals with Yavneh. The semifinals would see HANC defeat Moriah 2-1 in overtime on Isaac Silbiger's 2nd game winning goal of the day and Yavneh blank Noam 3-0 to set up a showdown of the two league champions and a rematch of the very first tournament finals back in 2006. In that showdown, Yavneh came away victorious, and in this contest, they would do the same, as Eitan Goldwasser and Max Pomerantz scored for the Redhawks to give Yavneh it's third tournament banner. Fellow Redhawk Adin Katler took home Tournament MVP honors with 3 goals and 2 assists on the day. Goalie Zac Nussbaum posted three shutouts and is the first honoree announced for the first-team all-tournament squad. The remainder of the first-team and second-team all-tournament awardees will be announced over the next few days. You can relive the event by going to our website, mwtournament.com and in the process donate to help us wrap up our goal of $10,000.00 for Hatzolah. A special thank you to HAFTR for providing their facilities for the day and to everyone who donated, sponsored, bought raffle tickets and volunteered their time for the 16th year in a row.
Stay tuned next week for our final episode of the 2022-2023 school year.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, if it seems like I'll be repeating myself for the next 4 minutes, it's really because I am. Two schools pockmark the Yeshiva League landscape this coming week, and it's nothing that we haven't already seen this year. All that and maybe more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in hockey where this update might make you think of boys in March, rather than girls in May, but Girls Hockey, will, in fact, feature a repeat of the Boys championship as Frisch and SAR will square off in Maayanot tomorrow night. Both teams advanced on shutouts, as League top seed Frisch blanked Kushner 3-0 while SAR rolled over East champion HAFTR 6-0 to square off for a championship for the second time this year. SAR will look for its second championship in a row with the girls having won last year over Heschel and its second hockey championship this year, with the boys having beaten Frisch a few months ago.
Speaking of SAR beating Frisch, boys soccer saw the Sting knock off the Cougars 9-8 last week in the semifinals, as Senior star Gabe Sklar netted 8 goals to lead SAR to the finals where they will square off with another Jersey nemesis, TABC. The Storm dominated North Shore 9-3 behind Avishai Avidan's 4 goals to advance to tonight's championship in JEC. The game will follow the Boys JV Championship which will also feature SAR and North Shore, after their wins over TABC and Frisch making it very apparent that the powerhouses of the future in Yeshiva League Soccer are exactly as they are right now.
Over in girls soccer, the JV championship saw Frisch defeat Ma'ayanot 6-5 in TABC last Wednesday. The varsity squad will look to do the same tomorrow night in Ma'ayanot against who else, SAR as the teams will lock up at 6:30 prior to the hockey finals between the two schools that I just mentioned a moment ago. Frisch, the top seed pulled out a nail-biter 6-4 win over Kushner while SAR steamrolled over SKA to give us yet another finals matchup between the two schools.
That being said, by this time Thursday morning, only boys volleyball and the outdoor sports will remain undecided.
Boys Softball will be at the semifinal stage as Heichel Hatorah and Keter Torah, Magen David and MAY, HANC and YDE and Maor and Hillel will have their quarterfinals before the week is over. The same for Darchai and Netzach Hatorah, Flatbush and Hillel, TABC and MAY and HAFTR and YDE in JV, and MTA and DRS, TABC and Frisch, Flatbush and SAR and JEC and Heschel in Baseball. Girls Softball expects to be in a similar position as HAFTR and Ilan and SKA and Frisch will play this week, with HANC and Hillel and Bruriah and Shulamith all to be determined.
The 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place Sunday June 11th in HAFTR. As usual, the 8-team event will be a fundraiser for Hatzolah, with our acclaimed memorabilia raffle, this year highlighted by our top prize, an autographed Adam Fox All-Star Game Jersey. Tickets for that and the rest of our amazing prizes will be available on our new and improved website which will go live over the next few days. For more information, to become a sponsor or to donate and help the kids reach their $10,000 goal, please e-mail mwtournament@gmail.com.
And that was your Tuesday Morning Frisch and SAR Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Indoor sports are semifinal ready and outdoor sports are winding down leading into the shavuos break. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, top seeds advance in Girls Varsity Soccer, but not in Boys Varsity Soccer, two shutouts highlight the girls hockey quarterfinals and a newcomer find themselves hot in the playoff mix in boys varsity softball. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in soccer, where, in Boys Varsity, a trio of quarterfinal contests took place Wednesday completing the round of play. The 4-5 contest lived up to the billing, going to sudden death, where Frisch outlasted host HANC 6-5 to advance to meet top seed SAR. The other half of the bracket saw West Champion TABC trounce DRS 11-3, and saw a major upset avoided as North Shore outlasted Ramaz 5-4. Both Semifinal contests, in SAR and TABC will take place tonight.
In Girls Varsity, the last two semifinal spots were filled, with the two higher seeds moving on with lucky 13 spots on the scoreboard. Kushner defeated Heschel 13-5 and SAR outpointed North Shore 13-11 to advance. SAR will next meet up with East Champion SKA tonight on Long Island, with the winner awaiting the winner of tomorrow night's contest between Kushner and Frisch in Frisch.
In Girls Hockey, the semifinals are all queued up after two first round shutouts. Home teams SAR and Kushner each advanced following shutouts over Ramaz and Heschel, respectively. Heschel and Kushner were scoreless for over 30 minutes before the Cobras struck for 3 goals in the final minutes for their 3-0 victory to advance to play top seed Frisch. SAR blanked the 6 seed Rams 4-0 and will take on East Champion HAFTR. Both contests will take place tomorrow night.
Heading out onto the diamond, a big week in the Central as Zichron Paltiel knocked off Magen Abraham twice to jump to 5-2 and catapult into the playoff picture. The wins kick wide open a door left open by Magen David's 12-9 loss to Shaare Torah, handing the Warriors their 2nd loss in a row and third on the year. Zichron Paltiel can lock up the post-season spot when they take on Flatbush tomorrow night. However, should Flatbush prevail, the two teams and Magen David will all be tied at 5-3 with at most two, and depending on Maor's matchup with SAR tomorrow night, only 1 of the three may find their way into the knockout stages.
Tickets for that and the rest of our amazing prizes will be available on our website over the next few days. For more information, to become a sponsor or to donate and help the kids reach their $10,000 goal, please e-mail mwtournament@gmail.com.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Playoff time is back in the yeshiva League and we are only a few short weeks away from crowning our Spring Champions. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, two Ramaz teams celebrate making the playoffs in entirely different fashions, a final already set in Girls JV Soccer, a major upset in Boys JV Soccer and the top seeds open up play in Varsity Soccer. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
In Volleyball, Ramaz completes the undefeated regular season, and will join SAR in the semifinals awaiting the winner of tonight's matchup between DRS and Magen David and the other quarterfinal where Flatbush will host North Shore. The Wildcats and Warriors will meet up for the second time in a week. Last week the Warriors jumped out to a 2 games to 0 advantage and were only points away from a sweep before DRS took over, won the 3rd set and held Magen David to only 8 points in each of sets 4 and 5 for the 3-2 victory.
In Girls Hockey, Central could not seal the deal on a playoff berth, losing identical 5-0 results to SKA and Ramaz on consecutive nights. As a result, Ramaz jumps the Wildcats gaining the 6 seed and a date with 3rd seed SAR in Riverdale on Thursday night. The 4 vs 5 matchup will happen tonight as Heschel travels to Kushner. Frisch and HAFTR await the winners in the semifinals.
In Boys Varsity Soccer, SAR opened the playoffs as the 1 seed knocking off 8 seeded Kushner 16-7. They will now await the winner of tomorrow night's contest between Frisch and HANC. It will be one of three contests on the night as the other half of the bracket Ramaz and North Shore and DRS and TABC will take place meaning that we will know our semifinal participants by Thursday morning.
In Boys JV, an Overtime upset as North Shore downs top seed Frisch 6-5. Their finals opponent will be determined tonight as SAR and TABC meet up in TABC.
A close call in Girls Varsity as Frisch eeked out a 4-3 win over Maayanot to advance to meet up with the winner of tonight's Kushner- Heschel matchup and SKA blitzed Ramaz and now awaits the winner of North Shore and SAR tomorrow night. Meanwhile, in JV, Frisch and Maayanot each put up 7 spots in their semifinal matchups and will meet up in the championship.
Meanwhile in Boys Softball, MAY did clinch the top seed, sweeping Darchai and will be joined in the post season by Hillel, YDE and HANC with 8 games left this week to decide the remainder of the post-season participants.
The 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament has been announced for Sunday June 11th in HAFTR. The 8 team field will include the host Hawks, HANC, HALB, Har Torah, Yavneh, SAR, Moriah and Noam. The kids will once again be raising $10,000 for Hatzolah. To sponsor or donate, please e-mail mwtournament@gmail.com.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Just as quickly as Spring sports have begun, the month of May brings us within inches of the playoffs. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, JV soccer's postseason has been determined, with varsity boys and girls not too far behind, Girls Hockey has their top spot decided and Boys Softball defending champs are on the verge of locking down theirs as well. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
In Boys Soccer, the eight playoff teams have been decided with the top 3 seeds locked in. SAR, TABC and North Shore have each won their divisions and will be 1-3 in that order in the postseason. Ramaz, Frisch and HANC all took wins this past week to finish at 6-2 and depending on how the tiebreakers fall out, will place 4-6, meanwhile, DRS and Kushner finish with 10 points and know that they will either face SAR or TABC in the first round.
Girls Soccer is a little more undecided, as each of the 3 division winners have finished at 8-0 and will need tiebreakers to determine their seeding. Kushner finishes in the 4 seed but will need to wait to see how tiebreakers shake out between North Shore, Ramaz and possibly Heschel to find out their opponent. Ma'ayanot has also earned a berth and will need to wait to see how the top 3 shake out to know where they will be playing in Round 1.
The JV league playoffs have been decided. In Boys JV #1 Frisch will host #4 North Shore and #2 TABC will take on #3 SAR. Frisch's 6-3 win over TABC last week locked up the top spot for the Cougars. In Girls JV Frisch and North Shore will square off as well with the same seedings, while Ma'ayanot in the #2 will host #3 SAR.
In Girls Hockey, a clear #1 has emerged as the Frisch Cougars have finished the regular season undefeated following a 3-1 win over SAR last night. The win, gives Frisch the top seed in the upcoming playoffs and relegates the Sting, now 7-1, to 2nd place in the Western division. In the East, HAFTR took two wins to up their record to 4-4. The results have put HAFTR on the edge of a playoff berth, depending on what happens in the remaining contests this week featuring Central and their matchups with SKA and Ramaz.
In Boys Softball, MAY can clinch the East with a win over Darchei this coming Friday and can clinch the top spot in the postseason with a sweep. Meanwhile, clear divides have formed between the top and bottom of all three divisions, as MAY and HANC have 6 wins in the East, 4 ahead of Darchei, Magen David and YDE each have 5 wins in the Central, 3 ahead of Flatbush and Zichron Paltiel, and Hillel, Heichel and Keter Torah all have 5 wins out West with the Central and West still up for grabs heading into the final week.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, as we enter the month of May, MAY continues their torrid run in Softball, TABC puts their undefeated record to the test in Boys Varsity Soccer and it's a two team race at the top of the West in Girls Hockey. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
In Girls Hockey, Central has risen to the top of the East with a record of 3-3 following their 1-0 shutout win over North Shore. Central now has a two point lead over the Lions and HAFTR who dropped identical 2-0 results to Ramaz and SKA to drop both teams to 2-4. Out West, Frisch, SAR, Kushner and Heschel have all clinched playoff berths. The division has become a two team race, though, as Frisch and SAR are both undefeated following Frisch's wins over Kushner and Ramaz and SAR's 5-1 win over SKA. The two will meet up next Monday night in a showdown to decide the West crown.
In Boys Volleyball, the defending champs have made their presence known. The SAR Sting swept two contests on the week, including a straight set victory over previously-undefeated Flatbush. Now sitting at 6-0, the Sting will gear up for the only remaining other undefeated team, Ramaz. The Rams took 3 on the week, knocking off North Shore, DRS and YDE to match SAR at 6-0.
In Boys Varsity Soccer, SAR wrapped up the Central with a 13-6 win over Ramaz. SAR and TABC remain the only undefeated teams, as TABC took care of JEC and Kushner this week, but will face a tall task against Frisch tonight. In their last meeting, coming out of the Pesach break, the Storm were able to take a 2-1 win over the Cougars out in Paramus. The playoff race will definitely be an interesting one, though in the middle of the pack. Currently 6 teams not leading their respective divisions are tied with 8 points at some variation of 4-2 or 4-3. How this week shakes out will have a massive impact on who goes on to the postseason and who goes home.
Moving over to the diamond, MAY is putting on a clinic in Boys Softball, taking an undefeated 6-0 record into the month of May. The Eagles have scored double digits in 5 straight contests, including a sweep over DRS, 14-3 and 12-2. Magen David has hit the half-way point at the top of the Central at 3-0-1. The Warriors took identical 12-2 wins over Flatbush and Shaare Torah this past week to lead the division. Out West Hillel and Heichel Hatorah remain locked in a heated battle, as Heichel stayed undefeated with a 10-run win over MTA. The two will meet up next Wednesday.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we welcome the diamond sports back into the mix as Softball and Baseball are in full swing, we have an early playoff position clinched in boys volleyball and a logjam in girls hockey. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Leading off, boys varsity softball, where the defending champs, the MAY Eagles have jumped out to a 4-0 start, sweeping doubleheaders against Rambam and HANC while giving up only 1 run in the process. The three shutouts have MAY at the top of the East. Out West, three teams still have 0s in the loss column with Hillel at 3-0 after wins over MTA, TABC and SAR, Keter Torah at 2-0 and Heichel Hatorah at 2-0, following a sweep of Frisch this past Friday, which included a 15-14 barnburner in Paramus. The East has just barely gotten underway as Magen David and Flatbush have each pulled out the only wins in the conference so far.
On deck is Girls Softball where Frisch and Naaleh have opened the season with wins out West, Frisch at 2-0, Naaleh at 1-0 and Shulamith-LI took a 12-3 win over Flatbush this past week to join HANC at 1-0 and drop Flatbush out of the ranks of the undefeated to 2-1.
In the hole is Boys JV Softball, where defending champion Hillel has also cycled to a 4-0 record. Their lead over the West is now 3 games over the only other team to have a record over .500, Heichel Hatorah who is only 1-0 following an 8-6 victory over winless MTA. Out East, MAY is currently ahead in wins at 3-1, but the defeat was a big one, taking a 14-7 loss to HAFTR who sits at 1-0. Darchei is also undefeated at 2-0.
Cleaning up is Baseball in which the defending champ Frisch Cougars made an emphatic statement to open up their title defense on Sunday, walloping Flatbush in Brooklyn. They join Kushner and SAR at 1-0 on the early season out West, while DRS has rode 1-run wins over HAFTR and Flatbush to a 2-0 record at the top of the East.
In Girls Hockey, both divisions have become logjams as the West and East each have 3 teams tied for the respective division leads. Frisch and Kushner posted shutouts this week to join Heschel at 10 points and Central and North Shore each took victories to join HAFTR at the top of the East at 2-2.
Finally in Boys Volleyball, Flatbush has clinched a playoff spot following a 4 set win over Frisch to push their record to 6-0. They gear up for matchups with the other two remaining undefeated sides as they travel to 4-0 SAR this Thursday and then await 3-0 Ramaz in mid-May to wrap up their regular season.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back to the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update as we begin our coverage of Spring sports. On today's edition, we will bring you up to speed on soccer, girls hockey and boys volleyball as the diamond sports all first kick into high gear this coming week. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start off with Boys Varsity soccer where all teams will be at least halfway through their schedule by next week. In the East, DRS and HANC have jumped into the lead at 6 points. The Wildcats are 3-0 with the Hurricanes at 3-1, their only loss, a 5-3 defeat to DRS before the holiday break. North Shore is right behind both teams at 5 points, 2-1-0-1. In the West, TABC currently sits at 3-0, 2 points better than Frisch and Kushner. The Storm have already defeated the Cobras in a high-scoring 7-6 battle to open their campaign and will take on the defending champion Cougars tomorrow night in Frisch. The Cougars could not overcome the Cobras, falling to Kushner 6-3 to start their season. Meanwhile, last year's runner up, SAR, remains undefeated in the Central at 4-0, two points better than Ramaz, at 3-0. At least one of these two teams will have a 1 in some other column after tomorrow night, when they meet up in SAR.
In Boys JV, TABC and Frisch are your leaders at the halfway mark in the 9 team field. TABC at 4-0 and Frisch at 3-0. Frisch will look to square things up tonight, when they face off with YDE.
In Girls Varsity, SKA has jumped out to a 4-0 record in the East, with the next three teams behind them all stuck at 2 points. SAR and Ramaz are at the top of the Central at 5-0 and 4-0, respectively, both were in action last night and came home with wins against Flatbush and Central, respectively. Meanwhile, out West, Frisch is at 3-0, but it's Kushner who has jumped out to a 5-1 record, leading the West. Frisch has already gotten the better of the Cobras this year, but Kushner will look to even the score against the defending champs tonight in Frisch. Frisch, though, is in rare form, having outscored opponents 47-5 in their matchups this year.
In Girls JV, Frisch, SAR and Ma'ayanot have jumped out to the top of the 7-team field at 4-0, 4-1 and 3-1. Frisch took care of Central, last night to take the league lead.
Moving over to Boys volleyball, Flatbush has blasted out to a 5-0 record. The rest of the league is all bunched up way behind them beginning with SAR and Ramaz, both 2-0, DRS, Magen David and North Shore all at 2-1, with DRS heading into a battle with 0-3 YDE last night. Flatbush will have a chance to further their grasp on the top spot when they take on 1-1 Frisch, in Frisch, tomorrow night.
Finally, in Girls hockey, Heschel has already played 7 of their 8 games, jumping out to a 5-2 record in the West. Their two losses have come to teams right behind them in the standings, Frisch and Kushner. Kushner is currently at 3-1 and Frisch is currently 2-0, both looking upward at the defending champions, SAR who currently sit at 4-0. In the East, teams are just hitting their mid-season as HAFTR leads the division at 2-1, and no other team has played more than 3 games.

Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck Tournament caps off our Winter Sports coverage. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Twenty-four teams converged on Yeshiva University this past weekend to vie for one of the three tier championships at the 2023 Red Saracheck Memorial Basketball Tournament. Eight Yeshiva League teams were among the participants including last week's League championship combatants North Shore and Frisch. Unfortunately for both teams, neither would reach the final, however, the league was well-represented on Championship Monday. In the Tier III Championship, JEC upended Kohelet 52-42. The Thunder shook off a Day 1 loss to Fuchs Mizrachi to take victories over Maimo and Mesivta of Greater Philadelphia to reach the final. Yosef Heller took home the MVP for the Tier.
Tier II saw DRS fall to that same Fuchs Mizrachi team. DRS found itself in Tier two following a qualifier loss to Magen David to begin the tournament. DRS defeated RASG and Berman, but could not overcome the Mayhem, who also took out TABC on their road to the final. The 53-39 victory by the 14th seed over the Wildcats was set in motion early with a 22-4 first quarter stretch that allowed Fuchs to coast the rest of the way.
The Main event of the tournament, however, was the Tier 1 final, which saw 2nd seed Valley Torah take on 5th seed SAR. The Sting earned their way to Championship Monday by knocking off the tournament top seed Shalhevet in a stunner on semifinal Sunday 57-55 behind 23 points from Akiva Shanzer. Valley Torah punched their ticket by defeating Cali rival YULA by 10. The Sting rolled out to a 16-6 lead, but the Wolfpack were resilient, chipping away and closing the gap to 1 at the half 31-30. The second half was all Valley as the Wolfpack rode 17 points from Johnny Dan to their second straight Tier 1 championship.
With Saracheck drawing to a close, so too does the 2022-2023 winter sports season. Tune in after the Pesach holiday for soccer, boys volleyball, girls hockey, softball and baseball as the JM in the AM Sports Update turns the focus to the Spring.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
Today's JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated in memory of my father Avraham Menashe ben Dov Be'er Halevi, on this, his 17th Yehartzeit.
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update we crown our final two champions of the 2022-2023 winter season as Boys JV and Varsity basketball take center court. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
A year after championship Sunday saw four New York teams fighting for the JV and Varsity crowns, we returned to a more traditional New York-New Jersey affair. The JV matchup kicked off the afternoon with two West teams as 1 seed TABC squared off with 2nd seed Ramaz. The underdogs would hold the upper-hand for most of the contest as the Rams held 7 point leads out the 1st and 2nd quarters and would even hold a double-digit lead in the closing moments of the 3rd, paced by the inside play of Sophomore Isaac Ohayon and the hot hand from beyond the arc, Sophomore Nate Sugar who would finish the afternoon with 15 and 12 respectively. However, foul trouble would be the name of the game for both teams, but especially for Ramaz, and it gave TABC new life in the final quarter. Prior to that point, TABC had been a dreadful 3 for 10 from the line, but Sophomores Eyal Kinderlehrer and Yonah Mandel would combine to shoot 6 of 8 in the final 8 minutes and the Storm would outscore the Rams 18-4 down the stretch to erase the deficit and turn it into a 6- point TABC victory, 46-40. Kinderlehrer and Mandel finished with 14 and 11 respectively, but Mandel's massive back to back 3's were the spark that brought the Storm back from near-certain defeat, earning him MVP honors. The win completes the undefeated season for the Storm who bring home their 2nd JV title in the last 6 years.
The main event of the afternoon would prove to be a real catfight as the North Shore Lions and Frisch Cougars matched up for the Varsity trophy. Frisch would find their grove early, specifically Senior Alex Zakheim who single-handedly outscored the Lions 11-10 in the first quarter, but a rare off-day for the Cougars as a whole proved to be their undoing as North Shore would allow only one bucket from the field in the 2nd quarter, and jump out to a 24-17 halftime lead. Zackheim would continue to drain shots, finishing the afternoon with a game-high 24, but by the time the rest of the Frisch squad found their groove, North Shore had already opened up a double-digit lead and did not slow down, riding a 26 point 4th quarter to a 63-43 championship victory. Junior Ben Abizadeh led a group of 9 Lion players making marks on the scoresheet, topping 20 points, en route to pulling in a Varsity final MVP to match the JV MVP that he took home in last year's championship by the Lions. Senior David Orbach and Junior Jordan Zarka each added double-figures in the North Shore victory helping lead North Shore to their 2nd Varsity title and the Junior group to their 2nd championship in a two-year stretch.
With that, another winter sports season has drawn to a close. However, that does not mean that the competition is over. The close of the Yeshiva League Basketball season, means that it is time for the 2023 Red Sarachek tournament. Starting this Thursday, you can tune in to MacsLive and Yeshiva League Pass for all of the action as 24 of the nation's top teams converge on Yeshiva University to vie for the most prestigious title in Yeshiva sports. We'll recap all of the action for you right here next week.

Happy Pie Day everyone!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, hockey crowns its champions, but nobody wanted either season to end on time, and the matchups are set for this Sunday's Boys Basketball championships. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Hockey had its turn to shine this past Sunday as hockey would actually have a Championship Sunday for the first time since 2019. However, in a twist, due to the participants, the contests would need to be played at two different venues in two different states. The JV took center stage to begin the day, as seen live on the Yeshiva Sports Network, and sponsored by the Nachum Segal Network, at Frisch as TABC and DRS, the two division champions squared off in a rematch of last year's contest. A scoreless contest through one period of play, DRS opened up the scoring early in the 2nd on a goal by Sophomore Aiden Frenkel. TABC would answer back midway through the period on a power play goal by Sophomore Bentzion Keiser to knot it up at 1 apiece. The teams would clamp down and we would remain scoreless through the third sending the championship into overtime. However, it would not take long to determine a winner. Three minutes in, Sophomore Aiden Rauzman took a pass at mid court and fired a rocket into the top far corner of the DRS net completing the 2-1 victory, mirroring DRS's 2-1 victory over TABC in Frisch the previous year. Rauzman and Storm goalie Sophomore Shai Forgash would take home MVP honors in the win.
The night portion of Championship Sunday would occur two hours East in DRS, where Frisch and SAR packed the Greenhouse for the Varsity championship, also seen on the Yeshiva Sports Network, sponsored by the Nachum Segal Network. The scoring would come fast and in waves as Frisch charged out behind two goals by Senior Jake Feit and one by Senior Ethan Alter to a 3-0 lead mid-way through the first. SAR, however, would not crumble. A laser shot by Senior Stephan Nayowitz would get the Sting on the board before the end of the first, and a two minute stretch in the 2nd would see Junior Asher Rudman land two of his own to tie the game heading into the third period of play. Alter would take the lead back for Frisch in the early moments of the third who looked to dig in and preserve their advantage. However, a Cougar penalty would give the Sting another opportunity and SAR would capitalize on an Eytan Krausz rocket to tie the game. Like the JV game, time would trickle down and we would find ourselves in an extra session. Unlike the JV, this one wouldn't be decided until late in the period, when in a mad scrum in front of the Frisch net, the ball found its way to the stick of Sting Senior Gabe Hornblass, who would put it home off the back bar at the top of the net to give SAR its first varsity championship since 2018. Rudman, one of the lone Juniors in the contest recorded 2 goals and 2 assists and walked away with well-deserved MVP honors.
We now turn our attention to the last remaining open leagues, JV and Varsity Boys Basketball. The finals are set for this coming Sunday at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University. At 1PM, the top 2 West seeds, TABC and Ramaz will meet up to determine the JV crown. TABC throttled SAR 57-29, while Ramaz rode 25 points by Sophomore Isaac Ohayon to upend favored Magen David 54-49. At 4PM, Frisch will be back in action after surviving Magen David 61-59 behind 43 combined points from Isaac Schiffman and Alex Zakheim, but it will not be the Sting that they see in this final. SAR fell last night in an instant classic to North Shore 58-56, setting up a battle of the cats, the Cougars and the Lions in the city this Sunday. You can catch all of the action starting around 12:45 live at MYHSAL.COM in a joint production of the Yeshiva Sports Network and MacsLive, sponsored again by the Nachum Segal Network.

Chag Sameach everyone!
We are in the home stretch of the Winter Sports season! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the first pieces of gold have already been awarded in Girls Basketball, Hockey will do the same this Sunday and Boys Basketball will follow suit, but not before two high-level semifinal matchups. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Girls JV and Varsity Basketball are the first to complete their seasons and crown queens of the court. In JV, Frisch topped SAR 48-40, finishing off a perfect season to take home the first of the fall championships. Their older sister Cougars, however, could not do the same. The SKA Sonics completed their perfect season, knocking off Frisch 62-52 behind 31 points from Sophomore Daphna Steinmetz. The Sonics, more used to hanging B Division banners have now earned an "A" League championship to accompany the last banner raised in 2019.
The next set of championships will come this Sunday, as the Boys JV and Varsity Hockey leagues get set to hand out their first set of Winter hardware. In a first, this year will feature a same-day split venue doubleheader, with the JV Championships between DRS and TABC taking place first in Frisch. The two met earlier this year, in TABC, with the home team victorious and now looking to cap off a perfect season. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00PM. The day will then shift back into New York, where the Varsity championship will take place in DRS. Unfortunately for the host school, the Wildcats will not be involved, having dropped their semifinal matchup to Frisch 4-1. Frisch will now go back to the final and join the earlier repeat matchup by taking on...SAR. The Sting throttled any chance of a double repeat final, knocking off TABC 5-2. SAR led 3-0 entering the 3rd, but 2 goals in two minutes closed the gap for the Storm, however, the Sting would keep at it and stretch the lead back out in the closing minutes. Puck drop for the varsity final will be 8:00PM. You can catch both games on the Yeshiva Sports Network with pregame festivities, with current coaches Avidan Berman and Josh Kass and former coaches like David Kolb and yours truly, beginning at 12:30 and 7:30PM by going to the Yeshiva League website, MYSHAL.COM. To become a sponsor, like Yeshiva League Pass, reach out to YLSweisguy@gmail.com.
The following Sunday will see JV and Varsity Basketball's championship take center stage at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University. Varsity Basketball's semifinals will take place over the next 6 days, with both #1s and #2s advancing. West #1 Frisch, 15 point winners over Flatbush in the quarters taking on Magen David in Frisch on Thursday night. In the other bracket, East #1, undefeated North Shore will face off with West #2 SAR following the Sting's 48-41 victory over DRS. That contest will take place next Monday. In JV, East #1 Magen David rounded out the semifinal field and will host West #2 Ramaz. Magen David dropped Frisch 72-66, which means that unfortunately for my broadcast colleague, but fortunately for all of you that tune in to the championships on the Yeshiva Sports Network, Cougar coach Dovey Forman will be joining me, once again in the booth this year. In the other bracket, TABC and SAR will square off this Thursday night. SAR represents the only non- #1 or #2 seed in the JV or Varsity semis.
And that was your Wednesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Nachum!
The days are ticking down to the 2022-2023 Winter finals and two matchups are already set. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, JV Hockey and JV Girls basketball are gearing up for their big games, Varsity hockey and Varsity Girls Basketball will get there tomorrow night and JV and Varsity Boys basketball will take their time as their final is almost three weeks away. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
JV Hockey is the first boys league to have its championship matchup set. The 2023 final will feature the same teams as the 2022 final, the TABC Storm and DRS Wildcats. The Storm reached the big game by upending North Shore, 8-1. For DRS, the road was a bit more treacherous. The Wildcats took on SAR last night, following the Sting's 7-3 thrashing of Flatbush in the quarters and for most of the game looked as if they were primed for an upset. However, three goals in the final 6 minutes of the game would spell the downfall for the Sting, as Sophomore Yitzy Yudin's game winner helped DRS to a 4-2 win and another championship appearance. The championship will be Sunday March 12, location to be determined.
Varsity Hockey will be next as both semifinals take place tomorrow night. TABC, the #1 seed will take on #5 SAR. The Sting advanced following a 7-1 upset over YDE, the only hosting quarterfinalist to lose. The Sting and Storm split the regular season series, with each winning on the other's home court. In the other semifinal, #2 DRS will host #3 Frisch. DRS shut out rival HAFTR 5-0 in their quarterfinal matchup and will get a shot at redemption against the Cougars who shut them out 4-0 in DRS during the regular season. Much like JV, a repeat of last year's championship is still in play, but would take victories from TABC and Frisch to set that up.
In Basketball, Girls JV becomes the first to know its finalists, as SAR and Frisch both took massive wins in the semis and will meet up in a rematch of last year's semifinal contest, won by the eventual champion Cougars. Frisch has continued its dominance, winning both games over the Sting this season. In Varsity, the semifinals are set, as Frisch will host HAFTR tonight and SKA will take on Flatbush tomorrow night.
Moving over to Boys, in Varsity the full set of semifinals will be determined tonight. At 7:45 West #2 SAR hosts East #3 DRS with the winner to take on East #1 North Shore, 59-49 winners over JEC. In the other side of the bracket, West #1 Frisch takes on East #4 Flatbush with Magen David waiting in the wings after drubbing TABC 59-46.
Finally in Boys JV, TABC and SAR advance to the semis where they will meet this Thursday. SAR advanced with an overtime upset over DRS while TABC dominated HAFTR. Ramaz ended North Shore's bid for a repeat last night, defeating the Lions 51-46 and await the winner of last night's contest between East #1 Magen David and West #5 Frisch.
Championship Sunday is drawing ever closer in all leagues and the Yeshiva Sports Network is the only place to experience the hockey and basketball finals. For the 3rd time, YSN will be streaming all four championships with myself and an all-star cast of coaches and athletes breaking down each contest. Playoff action has hit a fever pitch as every postseason has reached at least the Quarterfinal stage. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a freshman powers Flatbush over HAFTR in Varsity Basketball, the semifinals are set in Girls Varsity Basketball and in JV Hockey, a battle "for pride" and, no...we're not "Lyin". All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Varsity and JV Hockey each had one game played this week, both 1 goal affairs. In TABC, the #1 seeded Storm survived a scare against 8th seed Kushner, defeating the Cobras in Teaneck, but it did not come easy. Tied 1-1 until the 2 minute mark of the third, Storm Junior Shay Fields netted the go-ahead and game-winning goal. In dramatic fashion, the Storm would need to kill off a late Kushner powerplay, but did so and will now await the winner of tomorrow night's contest between #4 YDE and #5 SAR, in Brooklyn. The other contest tomorrow night will feature the 5-Towns rivalry with #2 DRS hosting #7 HAFTR, the winner to face #3 Frisch with a spot in the championships on the line.
In JV, the drama took on more of a comeback variety out in the Battle for the Pride between the 5 seed MTA Lions and 4 seed North Shore Lions. North Shore jumped out to a 3-0 lead on 2 goals by sophomore Elijah Kule, but MTA would not go quietly, scoring twice to close the gap. However, they would not get any closer, as North Shore now advances to play TABC this Thursday night in Teaneck. Also Thursday night will be the remaining quarterfinal contest with #3 SAR hosting #6 Flatbush, the winner to play #2 DRS.
Moving over to basketball, where the quarterfinals in varsity are all set. The JEC Thunder upset #4 Hillel in Overtime 57-55, Senior Michayel Cornick with the grab and lay in down low at the overtime buzzer to represent the difference. JEC will now move on face North Shore tomorrow night, the winner to play the winner of West #2 SAR and East #3 DRS. In the other bracket, the Flatbush Falcons took 21 points from Freshman Sam Jemal to outpace East #5 HAFTR 49-41. The Falcons will play West #1 Frisch next Tuesday night, the winner to play the winner of Magen David and TABC, taking place in Brooklyn next Tuesday.
In JV, by the time we have our next update, we will have reached the semifinals, as all four quarterfinals will be played by next Monday night. This Thursday, West #1 TABC will host East #4 HAFTR, the Hawks 59-45 winners over Flatbush this past Wednesday. The winner of that contest will get to watch Saturday night as DRS and SAR square off in Woodmere. In the other bracket, North Shore and Frisch advanced to the quarters with first-round victories on Wednesday. North Shore downed YDE 59-38 and will next take on Ramaz, while Frisch upended West #4 Hillel 65-53 and will square off with Magen David. Both contests will take place Monday with the winners to meet in the next round.
Finally, in Girls Varsity, the semifinals are set and will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday. Undefeated SKA continued their roll, scoring 77 in a rout over Ma'aynot and will face East #3 Flatbush. The Falcons traveled to Ramaz and ran away with a 55-38 victory and will face the Sonics next Wednesday. In the other semifinal, next Tuesday, West top seed Frisch, winners of a 12-point victory over HANC Will take on East #2 seed HAFTR, who narrowly defeated SAR in the quarterfinals.

The playoffs are upon us as we count down the days until we crown our 2022-2023 Winter Sports champions. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, first round matchups are under way in almost all leagues. We'll take you through a heavy week in basketball and a light week in hockey, but both equally impactful. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start off in Boys Varsity Basketball, which saw the most action over the past week. Six matchups took place Tuesday night to determine the final seedings. North Shore defeated DRS 55-34 to finish undefeated at 14-0 and take the top seed in the East. Unfortunately for DRS, Magen David took an 11 point win over TABC, meaning that the Warriors would take the East #2 seed while DRS would have to play a first-round matchup. The Wildcats squared off with East #6 Waterbury, defeating them 49-37 to advance to play the West #2 seed, the SAR Sting. SAR earned the West #2 seed by virtue of TABC's loss, but could not earn the #1 seed as Frisch defeated Ramaz to take the West crown. Frisch will now await the winner of Flatbush and HAFTR, playing this Thursday night. Out West, Hillel earned the #4 seed and will face off with JEC tonight, with the winner heading to North Shore. In the remaining first-round matchup, TABC ensured that there will be a new champion, as the Storm rode 22 points from Netanel Benloulou to defeat Ramaz. Their reward, another matchup with Magen David.
In Boys JV Basketball playoffs, West 3 seed SAR knocked off MTA and will advance to face East #2 DRS. The other 3 first-round contests will all take place tomorrow night. West #4 Hillel will host Frisch with the winner to face Magen David. Out East, #4 HAFTR meets up with #5 Flatbush and #3 North Shore takes on #6 YDE with the winners moving on to play West winner TABC and #2 Ramaz in the quarterfinals.
In Boys Varsity Hockey, the last game of the regular season, YDE scored late in the 3rd period to force overtime against Flatbush, and then proceeded to end the Falcons season on a Jack Harary game winner with 19 seconds left in the extra session. As a result, the Thunder gained the #4 seed and will host the SAR Sting next Wednesday night. The winner will face the winner of tonight's contest between #1 TABC and the other benefactor of YDE's win, #8 Kushner. On the other side of the bracket, the first game of the playoffs has already taken place as Frisch scored 4 unanswered goals in the last 14 minutes to upend #6 HANC 5-2. They will now await the winner of next Wednesday night's contest between #2 HAFTR and #7 DRS.
Over in JV, Flatbush succeeded where the Varsity could not, downing YDE to gain their entry into the postseason. They will square off with #3 SAR with the winner taking on #2 DRS. The other quarterfinal contest will take place Thursday night as #4 North Shore hosts #5 MTA with #1 TABC waiting in the wings.
As the playoffs roll on, stay tuned to Yeshiva League Pass and all of the YLP handles on Instagram for all the latest updates as all leagues approach their respective championships.

After four long months of competition, we have finally reached the last day of the regular season for the 2022-2023 Winter Sports year. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, top seeds in Varsity Basketball's East and West find their fates intertwined, JV Basketball has their bracket figured out, and Varsity and JV hockey all come down to one final game to cement the playoff picture. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
In Boys Varsity Basketball, North Shore clinches the East crown, taking wins over HAFTR and Magen David. The Lions will know tonight who will join them as an East bye as both DRS and Magen David are in action. DRS will need a win over North Shore or a Magen David loss to TABC to clinch the East #2 seed. It's been a rough week for Magen David, also losing to SAR to drop to 9-4 taking their ability to clinch a bye on their own out of their hands. SAR will also be at the mercy of another team to determine what their seed will be. Having finished at 12-2, they will need to await Frisch's contest with Ramaz tonight to see whether they will be the West #1 or #2 seed, that by virtue of Frisch sweeping the season series with SAR 58-48 this week. A Frisch win will give the Cougars the West crown, but a loss could possibly drop them to #3 if TABC can beat Magen David. While so much still remains up in the air going into the last day, we do know that the 6 teams that we've mentioned, in addition to Flatbush, HAFTR and Waterbury in the East and Hillel, JEC and Ramaz in the West will all be moving on to post-season action starting next week.
In JV Basketball, the regular season has reached its conclusion and the playoff bracket has been determined. Magen David joins TABC finishing with a perfect 10-0 record after dominating HANC as the two win the East and West, respectively. DRS and Ramaz each picked up wins on the week as well to finish at 8-2 and will be the #2 seeds from the respective divisions and will earn byes as well. In the East, #3 North Shore will take on YDE, while #4 HAFTR will host Flatbush. YDE defeated Flatbush 70-64 to tie their season series and their record, but missed out on the tiebreak by 2 points, by virtue of the Falcons' 8 point win over them earlier this year. Out West, SAR's late-season slide sees them at #3 hosting MTA while Hillel will host Frisch in the last quarterfinal matchup.
Moving over to hockey where the focus of both JV and Varsity will each come down to one game to complete the playoffs. In Varsity, TABC locked up the #1 seed with a 7-3 win over Kushner and DRS took the 2 seed with a win over HAFTR and a YDE loss to HANC. The Frisch Cougars will wind up in the 3 seed and HAFTR, taking two losses on the week will drop to 7th. 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th will be decided tonight when YDE takes on Flatbush. SAR, HANC and YDE will all fit into 4-6 in some order depending on the outcome, but Flatbush is fighting for their playoff lives and only a win will do the trick. The Falcons have taken a possible 5 points in 3 games, with wins over Ramaz and Solomon Shechter and a 1-1 tie to Rambam, putting them in position to jump Kushner for the 8th and final spot in the postseason. A YDE win will give them the 4 seed and a home playoff date with SAR, by virtue of the Sting's 3-2 late game win over MTA last night.
In JV, that same matchup will determine the final participant as YDE looks to play spoiler to Flatbush's attempt at the postseason. The Falcons took a win over Rambam to put them into a tie with Frisch, who also needed a late goal to top MTA this week 3-2. A Flatbush win, tie or overtime loss will get them into the playoffs over the Cougars to face #3 SAR, the winner to play #2 DRS. In the other half of the bracket #4 North Shore will meet #5 MTA with the winner earning a date with #1 TABC
As we come down to playoff time, stay tuned to Yeshiva League Pass and all of the YLP handles on Instagram for all the latest information regarding who is in, who is out and who is going where once the knockout stages begin.

With everyone back from winter break, the next two weeks become the most action-packed and intense of the season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, TABC pulls the JV double as both hockey and basketball clinch the West top seeds, and the Varsity Basketball West gets thrown wide open as the clinching window slams shut. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start off in JV Hockey where the West crown was decided this past week following a pair of TABC wins over Frisch and SAR. The 4-1 win over SAR, the more important of the two games as it put the Storm out of reach of the Sting, who will finish 2nd in the West at 8-2. As a result, TABC has also clinched the #1 overall seed in the upcoming playoffs and will leave the DRS-North Shore battle on Thursday night to decide the #2 seed, but also the 3 and the 4 seed as both teams and SAR can shift depending on the outcome. The 4-0 win over Frisch served to put Frisch's season on the brink as MTA captured a playoff berth leaving the Cougars fighting with Ohr Yisroel and Flatbush, all at 8 points, however, with the Falcons having the easier schedule down the stretch.
The JV Basketball Storm followed suit with their undefeated hockey bretheren, finishing off their undefeated regular season with wins over Heschel and SAR. The victory over SAR, a 51-47 Overtime thriller also served to knock SAR further down the charts, who end their season on a 3-game slide with a subsequent 13-point loss to Frisch and, depending on how Ramaz and Hillel finish off their seasons against JEC and MTA, could push them out of a first-round bye altogether. Speaking of MTA and JEC, the Lions and Thunder are in a race for the 6th seed in the West with an MTA win or JEC loss giving MTA that spot. In the East, Magen David has already clinched the 1 seed, but there is still plenty of uncertainty as DRS, North Shore and HAFTR fight for 2-4 and Flatbush, YDE and Rambam are in a race for 5th and 6th.
Moving over to Varsity Basketball where now only one undefeated team remains, that being the North Shore Lions, on the heels of Frisch's 59-45 drubbing of SAR this past week. An SAR win would have put the finishing touches on the top seed, however, the loss now kicks the door wide open for Frisch and TABC to enter the conversation as SAR will face Magen David and Frisch in 2 of their final 3 contests. A Frisch win on Thursday and the Cougars will control their own destiny at the top of the West heading into Ramaz next Tuesday, depending on SAR-Magen David tonight and TABC- Magen David next Tuesday. Certainly not an enviable schedule for Magan David, who also face North Shore this week and can either pull themselves into a race for the top seed in the East or fall out of competition for a bye altogether. Meanwhile, we now know the remaining teams in the West playoff hunt as JEC's 60-54 win over Heschel locked up berths for JEC and Ramaz to join SAR, Frisch, TABC and Hillel in the postseason.
Finally, in Boys varsity hockey, Frisch knocks off SAR 4-3 to ensure that the race at the top of the West stays between two teams, as the Cougars stay ahead of TABC, winners of an 8-2 contest with Kushner. However, Frisch only has a one-point lead, meaning TABC controls their own destiny with a game in hand, including a contest against HANC and a return bout with Kushner on the horizon.
As we come down to playoff time, stay tuned to Yeshiva League Pass and all of the YLP handles on Instagram for all the latest information regarding who is in, who is out and who is going where once the knockout stages begin.

As winter break rolls on, a handful of games are on the slate that will kick off the final weeks of the Winter sports regular season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we set the stage for the stretch run in basketball and hockey. All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start off with the largest slate of the last 2 weeks, Varsity Basketball. North Shore took another step toward the East crown, taking a 40-30 win off Waterbury to improve to 11-0 on the season. The Lions hold a two game lead on Magen David with three games to play. Waterbury would rebound with a win over Magen Abraham to even their record at 6-6 and put them on the brink of a playoff berth. A Waterbury win or YDE loss will give the Wolfpack the 6th and final East spot. Out West, MTA downed Kushner 46-33 behind 17 points from Gavriel Rudman. The West also has one spot left up for grabs, but can be taken care of with a JEC win or Ohr Yisroel loss. The two will face on February 7th.
Moving over to JV where one game was played, but one with a major effect on the West playoff outlook. Ramaz knocked SAR from the ranks of the undefeated, downing the Sting 56-50. The result leaves TABC as the only undefeated team out West at 8-0 with SAR at 7-1 and Ramaz at 7-2. For SAR, they now find themselves in limbo as to the first-round, as they play TABC on Thursday night. A win can give SAR the division title, however, a loss would put them in a potential tie with the Rams, meaning that SAR could slip from a bye all the way down to having to play a first-round game in only a two-week stretch.
In Girls Varsity, Ramaz and SAR both picked up wins. Both teams are set for the postseason, as the West teams are wrapped up with Frisch and Maayanot joining them. Out East, one spot remains, but can be wrapped up with a HANC win over North Shore next Tuesday.
In Varsity hockey, SAR avenged their earlier loss to Ramaz, blanking the Rams 7-0, officially eliminating Ramaz from playoff contention and keeping a first-round home game in clear focus in Riverdale. The Sting will face Frisch Thursday night as both battle for position in the upcoming postseason. Kushner and TABC will both do the same tomorrow night as Kushner looks to improve their standing and keep their playoff hopes alive as they battle with MTA and Flatbush for the final playoff berths.
JV Hockey begins an important stretch this week as well, as Frisch faces TABC on Thursday. A TABC win would put the Storm in position to clinch the West with a win over SAR next week and would cripple Frisch’s playoff hopes as they battle with Flatbush and Ohr Yisroel for the last berth.
For a more in- depth look at the playoff races in JV and Varsity Hockey, keep tuned to Yeshiva League Pass for an interview with yours truly on Yeshiva League Face-Off hosted by Josh Kass, dropping this week. We dive into both leagues and tear down all possibilities with the remaining matchups on the other side of the break.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Good morning everyone and a happy 2023!
Today on the first Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of the calendar year, TABC varsity hockey begins the year the same way last year ended, DRS varsity basketball puts the pressure on the East with a 3-spot and Hillel enters the conversation in JV Basketball. All that and more, straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Varsity Hockey where the start of 2023 turned out to be a continuation of 2022 for the newly minted team to beat, the TABC Storm. Within a week and a half, TABC has taken control of the West and the league, knocking off Frisch and DRS. The Storm completed the sweep of their 2022 finals nemesis Cougars by the score of 5-3 behind a hat trick from senior Eitan Adler. They would then follow that up with a 6-2 drubbing of the Wildcats behind two goals apiece from senior Eli Altman and Junior Shay Fields. As a result, TABC is 10-1, but currently sit one point behind Frisch, who have 21 points, by virtue of that OT loss to TABC 2 weeks ago. Both TABC and Frisch now head into the break, but for the Storm, the road to making March 2023 different than March of 2022 has already begun. In other action, only a week after appendix surgery, Rambam Junior Zevi Herskowitz makes an emergency appearance in the last 7 minutes of the Ravens' contest with Magen David last night and single-handedly turns a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 victory keeping Rambam's slim playoff hopes alive. Also, HAFTR takes two wins on the week, knocking off YDE and HANC, stopping the Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime, on yet another Jacob Wolf extra-session winner.
In JV, TABC has also established themselves as the favorites, jumping out to an early lead on DRS en route to a 4-1 victory, and becoming the sole remaining undefeated team in the league. Frisch kept their playoff hopes alive defeating Ohr Yisroel 4-1, moving into a tie between the two teams, but both will likely need to win out, which include a game against MTA for both and contests with TABC for Frisch and SAR for Ohr Yisroel and have help out East to keep Flatbush away to have any shot at the postseason. MTA is now 3 points up on both after knocking off JEC last night.
Moving over to varsity basketball, they may not be leading the East, but the rate that DRS are knocking off opponents sure has put pressure on the rest of the league to keep pace down the stretch or fall behind. The Wildcats took three wins in 4 days, knocking off Rambam, Flatbush and HAFTR to end 2022, upping their record to 10-3. North Shore still leads the East at 10-0 and don't seem likely to fall so far, even with a matchup with DRS looming at the end of the month, but for Magen David who, after losing to Flatbush this week, currently sit at 8-2, only one loss ahead and with games against undefeated North Shore and SAR and 2-loss TABC on the docket, one more false step could find the Warriors on the outside looking in at a first-round bye. In other action, TABC got their 9th win and thrust Hillel virtually out of the race for a West bye, with a 59-53 Overtime win behind 19 from Yaakov Salamon.
The Hillel JV Basketball heads in the opposite direction, though, taking wins on the week over Maor and JEC to improve to 5-3, locking up a playoff spot and thrusting them into the race for a first-round home game. A game with Frisch, also 5-3 this coming Sunday will determine which will be guaranteed that berth, but, spoiler, the two could potentially meet again at whomever wins come the first round of the playoffs.
With the playoff race heating up, keeping up to date is a must, and the best place for that is Yeshiva League Pass. For all the latest scores, standings and rankings for both hockey and basketball be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg!
Thanks Mattes!
Today on the last Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of 2022, a light week that passed sets up a huge week ahead on all fronts as we expect the first sets of many playoff tickets to be punched before the turn of the calendar. We'll take you through it all, straight ahead, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Only 10 games were played this last week, three of them in total on the hockey court but two major results that prove interesting for 2023. In Varsity, YDE continued their impressive season, knocking off Kushner, 6-4. Joe Dweck scored twice for the Thunder in their 8th win of the season. The Kushner loss officially clinches a playoff berth for Frisch ahead of their rematch with TABC tomorrow night in TABC. YDE can become the next team with a win over HAFTR on Thursday and a little help from Magen David, HANC and North Shore in their matchups this coming week. Speaking of HANC, the Hurricanes jumped to 11 points with a win over Solomon Schechter, two behind DRS who also gears up for a matchup with TABC on New Year's Day.
In JV, only one score on the week, but a biggie at the top of the West. The TABC Storm turn a 2-1 deficit with 4 minutes left in the 3rd against SAR into a 4-2 win, behind two goals from Yoel Gellman in the process. TABC is now the sole undefeated team in the West, making this coming Sunday against DRS the battle of the two last undefeated teams in the league. In other action up ahead, Frisch and Ohr Yisroel will do battle Thursday night with both trying to keep pace with MTA and stay ahead of Flatbush for what is currently the 6th playoff spot. MTA will also be in action, taking on JEC on Monday night.
Moving over to the hardwood, where Boys games made up 6 of the remaining 7 games this past week. In Varsity, Frisch kept their hopes of a division title alive with a 69-65 win over Hillel last night. The Cougars now head into a long break with two games against undefeated division leading SAR after winter vacation. Hillel, now at 7-3, going 1-1 on the week having knocked off Heschel by 20 are still in the hunt but will need to knock off TABC tomorrow night to have a realistic shot at a bye once the postseason comes around. Out East, HAFTR defeated HANC 60-45 to move into a tie for 4th in the East with Flatbush at 6-4. HAFTR will square off with YDE and DRS in an effort to cement their postseason hopes before the winter break. Flatbush and Magen David square off tonight as the Warriors look to lock up their postseason berth, currently sitting at 8-1.
The Magen David JV team will look to do the same in the first game tonight, hoping to improve to 8-0 and clinch the top seed in the East. The Warriors knocked off North Shore this past week, dropping them two games behind Magen David. Now having beaten both DRS and North Shore in the past two weeks, Magen David controls their own destiny in wrapping up the East crown. Also taking wins this past week, HAFTR put up 91 points in a win over HANC, improving to 6-3 and Hillel improved to 3-3, knocking off Heschel 64-33.
Finally, in girls Varsity, HAFTR improved to 7-1, knocking off HANC 37-31 and keeping them in the hunt to battle SKA for the East when they meet Saturday night in HAFTR.
Good Morning Nachum.
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Route-4 Rivalry gets special showcase in Hockey and Basketball, SKA's claim in Girls Varsity Basketball gets stronger, and the playoff race heats up in JV Hockey. All that and more, straight ahead. Chag Sameach, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start off with Varsity Basketball, where, while the East awaits their marquee matchup this coming week between North Shore and Magen David, the West had their top rivalry, TABC and Frisch on the docket on Saturday night, with both teams looking to put a dent in the other's chances to vie for the division. Earlier in the season, the Cougars walked away with a 13 point victory, meaning that a sweep would all but end TABC's chances in the West and leave them to battle for a quarterfinal matchup. However, the home team would not cooperate as Netanel Benloulou's 30 points catapulted TABC to a 55-44 win, bringing TABC to 8-2 and keeping them in the mix as we head toward the back-stretch of the season. In other action, Waterbury pulls to 4-5 with an overtime upset over DRS and Hillel skates by Ramaz by 3, 69-66.
In Girls Varsity Basketball, Ramaz hands Frisch their first loss 57-56, leaving SKA as the only remaining unbeaten team, currently sitting at 9-0.
And in Boys JV, DRS suffers another close loss, dropping a 41-40 decision to North Shore, taking their second loss on the season, in a three day stretch, by a combined total of 3 points.
Moving over to hockey, ten months ago, the Frisch Varsity Cougars and TABC Storm met up in Frisch in a classic, with Eli Knapp putting home the overtime winner for a 2-1 victory in a game that would serve as the catalyst for Frisch down the stretch on their way to a championship. The two met up last night in Frisch, in overtime, in a 2-1 contest, but this time it would be the Storm, behind two goals from Ryan Brandwein pulling out the win and dropping the last undefeated team in the league. Frisch still controls their own destiny out west, having gained a point on the night, but the two will meet up again next Wednesday night with the West title potentially on the line before the turn of the calendar. Also on the week, SAR continues their up and down play, one week after defeating TABC, losing to last place Ramaz 3-2 and beating MTA 2-1. Harrison Agus with the game winner for the Rams, who would take two on the week, also defeating Magen David last night 5-3.
In JV Hockey, with DRS, TABC and SAR running away at the top of the league, the race for the remaining three playoff spots is heating up behind them. Two of the favorites to take spots, North Shore and Flatbush met up in a rematch from last week, where North Shore blanked the Falcons 2-0 in Great Neck. In this contest, however, Flatbush would get their revenge, but the Stars would still earn a point as the Falcons pulled off a 2-1 OT win. The victory pulls Flatbush to 3-3 and sets them up in a race to the finish with Frisch, Ohr Yisroel and MTA, the Lions a 6-1 winner over Kushner this week, upping their record to 4-2-1. Back to the top, all eyes will be on SAR and TABC as the sole remaining game this week on Thursday night in SAR.  With the playoff race heating up, keeping up to date is a must, and the best place for that is Yeshiva League Pass. For all the latest scores, standings and rankings for both hockey and basketball be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, happy Chanukah everyone!
Good Morning Nachum and Mazal Tov to you and your family.
Today on the JM in the AM Sports Update, after a very eventful week in the Weiselberg household, a one-day delay only adds to our coverage. Straight ahead, SAR returns to the conversation in Varsity Hockey, Magen David and North Shore get ready for a showdown in Boys Varsity Basketball, and SAR and TABC continue their undefeated seasons in both JV sports. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll start out in Varsity Basketball where North Shore finds itself in a very unfamiliar position over the last few years. Hot off of last year's JV championship the Junior-heavy squad rolls into mid-December at 8-0, despite a scare against Magen Abraham this past week, a 56-52 Overtime win for the Stars. Now, North Shore gears up to square off against the other Magen, the 8-1 Magen David Warriors, a squad full of Juniors still stinging from last year's overtime championship loss. The Warriors have a battle-tested schedule off late, taking victories over Flatbush and DRS. The two teams will meet up for the only showdown this season next Wednesday, in a battle that could either determine the Eastern Conference, with a North Shore win, or bust it wide open if Magen David is victorious. In other action Frisch moves to 8-1, knocking off Heschel, and will now gear up to play SAR tomorrow night, in a battle that could do the same for the West.
Speaking of SAR, the Sting Varsity Hockey team has shrugged off their slow start and taken 5 of 6 points from top ranked opponents in the last 10 days. Following a 5-2 win over HANC and an overtime 5-4 loss to undefeated Frisch, the Sting rolled into TABC, against whom SAR suffered a 4-1 loss less than two weeks ago. However, the Sting would have their revenge as, tied late in the 3rd, Junior Asher Rudman would put home the game-winner for the 4-3 SAR victory, knocking the Storm from the ranks of the undefeated and placing the Sting 3 points behind the Storm for 2nd place in the West. In other action, Flatbush suffers a pair of close losses, taking a pair of 4-3 losses to HAFTR in overtime on Saturday night and to rival Magen David last night at home, both results come about after defeating Magen David in Magen David, last week, by the score of, you guessed it, 4-3.
Onto JV where SAR and TABC control the West in both sports. In Basketball, the Storm dropped Hillel to improve to 7-0 while SAR last played two weeks ago, but currently sit at 5-0. Both teams are gearing up for battles with 5-1 Frisch, SAR tonight and TABC Saturday night. Wins by both teams would cement the two as the above-and-away favorites and set the stage for the division crown on January 26th when both teams meet in SAR for the last game of the regular season. In Hockey, SAR is 6-0, following a 2-0 shutout of Frisch, 2 points ahead of TABC at 5-0. The two teams will know who has the advantage much earlier than their basketball counterparts as the two are set to square off next Thursday in SAR as both teams next contest. However, For TABC it's the beginning of a brutal stretch, as they follow it up with DRS on New Year's Day and Frisch and SAR again on the other side of the break.
With the Yeshiva League back, keeping up to date is a must, and the best place for that is Yeshiva League Pass. For all the latest scores, standings and rankings for both hockey and basketball be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm going to try to get some sleep.
Elliot M. Weiselberg, Esq.
Good Morning Nachum! Â Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update Cross-conference matchups highlight the week in Varsity Hockey, while intra conference rivalries take center stage in Boys Varsity Basketball and Frisch and SKA stay hot in Girls Varsity Basketball. All that and more straight ahead. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
We'll open up with Girls Varsity Basketball where Frisch and SKA have opened up identical 5-0 records to lead the West and East respectively. The Cougars take a 2 game lead in their division picking up wins over 2nd place SAR by 4 and 3rd place Maayanot by 11, while the Sonics have the upper hand over 4-1 Flatbush, handing them their first loss 51-37. Flatbush will get the chance to rebound this coming Saturday night when they play HAFTR. The Hawks have won 4 in a row since dropping their season opener to SKA, taking 3 of those wins, over Central, North Shore and Solomon Schecter in the last week.
In Boys Varsity, rivalries were the order of the week, with the most notable one being Frisch's 61-48 win over TABC. The win puts Frisch behind SAR at the top of West. SAR put an exclamation point this week of their own, drubbing DRS and knocking off JEC, a tough end to the week for JEC, bookending a win over rival Kushner with losses to Ramaz and SAR. In the East, Magen David continues to roll, with a 27 point win over HAFTR and a 50-37 win over YDE behind identical 24 point efforts from Senior Asher Melamed. The next stop for the Warriors will be a home matchup with rival Flatbush this coming Saturday night.
Moving over to hockey where the past two days saw two key inter-divisional contests with results that will make for an interesting 2nd half. Frisch stays undefeated, knocking off DRS 4-0 on Sunday. Senior Andrew Srulowitz posted Frisch's 2nd shutout in a row, having also knocked off MTA 7-0 earlier this week. The game starts a tough stretch for the Cougars where beyond MTA tonight, Frisch will play SAR on Thursday, Kushner next Thursday and then a home- and-home with TABC to round out 2022 in games that will likely determine the top of the West. Speaking of SAR, the Sting seem to have found their way back on track in the nick of time, having won 3 of their last 4, including a 5-2 win over HANC last night. A scrappy contest between the two sides, SAR's Morrison Dolfman broke a 2-2 tie with just under 5 minutes to go to give SAR the victory. Now at 3-1-0-2 the Sting can insert themselves into the conversation with Frisch and TABC as they square off with each over the coming week. In other action, Isaac Dweck scores twice for Flatbush, including the game-winner in an Overtime thriller with YDE to improve the Falcons to 2-1. Flatbush will look to state their case in the playoff race over the next 6 days squaring off with Magen David twice and HAFTR, both of whom sandwich Flatbush on the current standings-board.
In JV Hockey, DRS has opened up a 6 point lead on the rest of the East, but not without a scare from Frisch in a 4-3 win that saw the Cougars erase 3 DRS leads but could not overcome a fortuitous carom on a Josh Lampert game-winner late in the 3rd period. And Flatbush improves to 2-2, taking their 2nd win in a row, 3-0 over YDE behind an Omri Adaf shutout in YDE last Wednesday night.
With the Yeshiva League back, keeping up to date is a must, and the best place for that is Yeshiva League Pass. For all the latest scores, standings and rankings for both hockey and basketball be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram.
And that's your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Good Morning Everyone!
Today on the inaugural Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of the 2022-2023 sports season, the action has already kicked into high gear in all leagues and we'll bring you up to speed on the opening month of the Winter Sports season. All that and more straight ahead. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We'll start out in JV Hockey where three teams remain undefeated. DRS has breezed through their first 5 games, defeating all divisional opponents, including a dominant victory over Rambam, last night. The Wildcats will play two games in early December before a championship rematch with TABC on New Year's Day. Out in the West, The Storm, themselves remain undefeated at 3-0, but are joined by a resurgent SAR team, who has already taken on one challenge, defeating Flatbush 3-1 in a rematch of the pre-season Martin Weiselberg Memorial tournament championship. Also in the thick of things out west are MTA and Ohr Yisroel, both with 2 wins as the season heads toward the half-way point. Moving up to Varsity, the defending champion Frisch Cougars lead the way at 5-0. A 3-0 win over last year's semifinalist HANC has headlined the early season and sets them up for a showdown with DRS this coming Sunday. Right on the Cougars heels are TABC. The Storm enter the week at 4-0 but will meet up with SAR in Riverdale on Thursday night. The Sting have hit some hard luck over their first 3 games, losing their first two game of the season, against Kushner and DRS in overtime. Speaking once again of DRS, the Wildcats lead the East with 4 wins, but the early upset of the season involved DRS on the losing end, dropping a 3-2 overtime contest to YDE. YDE currently sits at 4-1, right behind DRS and just ahead of HANC, both of whom do not have favorable schedules compared to the Thunder. Moving over to basketball, North Shore has rolled out to a 6-0 record in the East with very few close contests in the early half of the season. The way things are going, the East may come down to the very last game of the season, where the Stars will face currently undefeated DRS. The Wildcats are at 3-0, but have the upper-hand over the North Shore, having defeated them in the finals of the Magen David preseason tournament. Out West, a tight race at the top with last season's runner up SAR out to a 5-0 start, with Frisch and Hillel behind them at 4-1 and defending champion Ramaz at 3-1, their only loss, a season opening championship rematch with the Sting in Riverdale. In JV, five teams remain unblemished as SAR and TABC leas the West at 3-0 with Frisch behind them at 2-0. That will not be the case a week from now as the Cougars and Storm meet up Saturday night in the first end of the Route 4 rivalry in Teaneck. Out in the East, DRS and Magen David are 2-0, but both still trail behind North Shore and HAFTR in the win column as the Stars are currently 4-1 and the Hawks 3-1.
Thanks Nachum! Good morning everyone! Today on an abbreviated Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we wrap up the 2021-2022 sports season. I'm Elliot Weiselberg. This past week saw two of the remaining three finals played. Indoors, 4th seeded SAR walked away with their first Boys Volleyball championship since 2014 sweeping North Shore 3 sets to none. For SAR, it was the 2nd time in a little over a month facing and sweeping the 2nd seed Stars, having done so in their final game of the regular season. SAR represents North Shore's only 2 losses on the year, with this one resulting in the culmination of the playoffs. Outdoors, Frisch's girls tennis team won the final girls championship of the 2022 Spring season, defeating Flatbush 3-2. The result underscores the matchup as both teams were undefeated heading into the contest, both having yielded less than 10 individual matches on the season. Frisch finishes with 7, while Flatbush's hopes were dashed with their 10th. This leaves one championship remaining, the Boys JV Softball championship between YDE and Hillel, which will happen this coming Sunday in Deal. Hillel is the home team for this contest, but one can imagine that most of the participants wont have too far a drive to play this game. However, for us at the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, it will bring to a close the 2022 Spring season and the 2021-2022 school and sports year. After the long pause in school sports and the slow build, the restrictions and mandates, the school year and all championships have been contested and awarded. We are thankful that we have been able to reach this point after months of "virtual everything" and that kids are able to be kids and participate in sports with their friends and that we've been able to bring it to you every Tuesday Morning. Thank you to Nachum and the JM in the AM and Nachum Segal Network family for helping bring to light the amazing efforts and accomplishments of all participants and giving a platform to share them with everyone. September is right around the corner and we cannot wait to join everyone in welcoming the 2022-2023 school year. For all of us at JM in the AM, this has been the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Have a great summer!
Thanks Nachum!
We are almost at the end of the line for the 2021-2022 School year. Several more leagues wrapped up this past week, including Girls Hockey, Boys JV Soccer, Boys Tennis and Boys and Girls Softball and Baseball. We'll take you through those and let you know what's on tap for the final week straight ahead on this Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Congratulations go out to the SAR Sting girls hockey team on a dominant 5-0 win over Heschel. Five different Sting scorers contributed, including game MVP Zoe From. With the win, the Sting become the first Eastern division team to win a girls hockey championship since 2003. The loss breaks Heschel's grip on the league crown since 2018. It was not as positive for the boys JV Soccer and Girls Softball Sting, though, as in soccer they fell to Frisch 10-2 in the championship and softball dropped the final to Ma'ayanot 10-1. For the Cougars, it makes 3 out of 4 soccer finals won by Frisch in the Boys, Varsity, JV and Girls JV leagues, with Kushner taking the varsity girls final. For Ma'ayanot, it's their first softball title since their consecutive run that ended in 2017. Speaking of Frisch, the Cougars also added some hardware on the Diamond last night, winning the Baseball championship over TABC 2-0. Both teams earned one-run semifinal victories to advance to the championship over the past week as the top ranked Cougars edged SAR 5-4, while TABC upset host MTA 2-1. This is Frisch's first baseball championship since 2018.
In boys tennis, the DRS Wildcats steamrolled to victory, blanking Flatbush 5-0 on Thursday. The run concludes a perfect season, in which DRS dropped only 3 of its 45 individual games all year, posting 6 shutouts in the 9 meets throughout the season. Flatbush will now set their sights on a girls championship when they face Frisch in the finals. The Falcons defeated Central 4-1, while Frisch blanked HAFTR 5-0. Similar to DRS boys, each have dropped single-digit games in their 8 matchups this season. That final will happen tonight. In Boys Varsity Softball, the MAY Eagles have won their first championship since 2014. MAY shutout DRS 3-0 on Sunday to take the crown. The Wildcats did not have much time to turn around prior to the final having only punched their ticket to Sunday with a grueling 1-0 win over Maor on Friday Morning. MAY and DRS finished deadlocked in the East at 7-1, having split their season series as their respective only losses, but it would be MAY walking away with the one that mattered most. This leaves only 3 championships left to be played, Girls Tennis between Flatbush and Frisch tonight, Boys Volleyball between SAR and North Shore tomorrow night and Boys JV Softball between YDE and Hillel. As such, next week will be our final Sports Update of the 2021-2022 School Year.
As the School year comes to a close, you can still get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Frisch sees plenty of soccer action, and plenty of soccer gold and results from the 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High hockey tournament. All that and more straight ahead, good morning I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We'll start off in soccer where Frisch has taken home 2 of the 3 championships that have already been decided. The Boys Varsity team capped off a perfect season with a 12-5 drubbing of SAR for what essentially is their 2nd consecutive championship, having won the last championship in 2019. Joining them are the JV Girls Cougars who doubled up Ma'ayanot 8-4 for their first championship since the 2016-17 season, where they also topped the Rapids in the finals. The JV Boys will square off with SAR tonight at JEC. Unfortunately for the Girls Varsity team, the chance for a Frisch sweep ended with a semifinal loss to SAR. The Sting would not be so fortunate in the championship, though, falling 12-5 to Kushner. In Boys Volleyball, the SAR Sting advance to the finals after upsetting the top seed Ramaz Rams 3 sets to 1. The Rams shook off a dominant 21-9 Sting first set victory to win the second set 22-20, but the Sting would take the third in extras and seal the match off with a 21-13 4th set win. The Sting will advance to play North Shore in the finals. SAR, the 4th seed swept the regular season meeting between the two 3 sets to none. Outdoors, the Boys JV Softball championship is set, as YDE will square off with Hillel for the title. Hillel defeated Heichel Hatorah 3-2 while YDE upended Darchai 11-1 in the semifinals to advance. Finally, congratulations to the Moriah Mountaineers, the 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Hockey Tournament champions. Moriah went undefeated through Har Torah and HANC in round-robin action, rival Yavneh in the semifinals and in a rematch of the 2022 YMSSA championship, shut out Ramaz 3-0 to take home the school's 4th tournament title. Tournament MVP honors went to Moriah goalie Jared Helwani, winner of all 4 games, yielding only 1 goal on the day. Helwani had himself a day in other parts of the event as well, walking away with two of the prizes from the renowned memorabilia raffle held. On the whole, the tournament, played in HAFTR, on Sunday was successful in all of its goals, raising over $11,000 for Hatzolah. Thanks Nachum! Straight ahead on the Tuesday JM in the AM Sports Update, the Frisch Cougars look to dominate the soccer world, the playoffs are set in baseball and softball, and a spring update with boys hockey results in it?? What could that be? Keep listening to find out. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. We'll start off in soccer, where the Frisch Cougars will have the chance for an unprecedented feat. The Frisch Boys Varsity team advanced to the finals after a dominant win over North Shore and now await the winner of SAR and TABC. SAR advanced to the semis with an impressive 11-8 victory over Kushner, led by 8 goals from junior Gabe Sklar. Ironically, the bracket in Boys JV is exactly the same, the JV Cougars knocked off North Shore 9-6 and now await the winner of TABC and SAR JV taking place tomorrow night in TABC. Frisch's JV Girls were the top seed and earned a bye to the finals where they will face Ma-ayanot, 10-2 winners over Kushner in their semis. That leaves the girls varsity squad who will square off with SAR next week in SAR. The Sting trounced Heschel to advance and vie for the opportunity to face Kushner, winners of a high scoring 15-10 contest with SKA. This will mark Kushner's 4th straight trip to the finals in Girls Varsity Soccer. In Girls Hockey, the Cougars were not as fortunate, as the battle for New Jersey's last remaining participant was a close one, however, Kushner downed Frisch 1-0 to advance. The Cobras will play top seeded SAR in a battle of the rink teams with winner to face the winner of Heschel and Ramaz. On the diamond, all softball and baseball leagues have their brackets set. Boys Varsity Softball will see Magen David square off at MAY tonight, SAR visiting YDE tomorrow night and Maor and Hillel on the road to face TABC and DRS respectively on Thursday. In JV, top seed Hillel hosts HAFTR. MAY meets neighborhood foe Darchai, TABC will travel to YDE and DRS will host Heichel Hatorah. In Girls Varsity East top seed Central will meet up with Hillel, Ilan will play HAFTR, tonight Ma-ayanot will face SKA and Shulamith will host SAR tomorrow. In Baseball, we'll end off the same way we began, as Frisch advances to the semis with a 3-2 win over Kushner. The winner will play either SAR or Heschel who will meet on Thursday. The other half of the bracket will have Flatbush hosting TABC and MTA in a NYC showdown with Ramaz. Finally boys hockey, yes boys hockey...while not Yeshiva League per se, a yasher koach to the group of 10 boys from our leagues who took part in a floor hockey tournament on Long Island this past weekend against competition from all over Nassau and Suffolk county's dek hockey leagues. The group made an impressive showing making it all the way to the finals against established teams and players, several of whom appear in travel and international competition. Not only did the group gain the admiration of the other teams, but the tournament itself took the time to note their performance as well as the respectful manner in which they competed. A true kiddush hashem and what will hopefully be the start of many successful events. Kudos go out to goalie Max Newmark, offenseman Yitzy Yudin and defenseman Nathaniel Lawrence, all noted by the tournament organizers for their exemplary play. Speaking of tournaments, the 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place June 12th in HAFTR. As we have been mentioning, the event will once again couple as a fundraiser for Hatzolah. Host HAFTR, HALB, HANC, Har Torah, Moriah, Yavneh, Ramaz and Kushner will all compete to bring home the 2022 crown and will look to raise $10,000 in the process. We are excited to announce, especially off the heels of last night's performance, that the grand prize for this year's tournament raffle will be a jersey autographed by New York Ranger defenseman Adam Fox. Tickets will be available for purchase on our website at www.mwtournament.com later this week. To help the kids reach their goal, please reach out at mwtournament@gmail.com to donate or sponsor. Thanks Nachum! We have hit the last week of the 2022 Regular Season! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we'll run you through the leagues that have already started their postseasons and get you set for those are about to. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Starting out in Girls Hockey where the Heschel Heat have a familiar result, a shutout. The Heat defeated the HAFTR Hawks in their quarterfinal matchup in the City last night by the score of 4-0. On the season, of Heschel's 9 games played, 8 of them ended in either a shutout win or a shutout loss, including a season opening 1-0 win over the team they beat last night and a 2-0 win over the team they will advance to face, the #2 overall seed Ramaz Rams, in a rematch of the two teams to face in the last championship. The other quarterfinal will see Frisch travel to Kushner with the winner to face off against #1 seed SAR. Moving over to Boys Varsity Soccer where one semifinal is already set. Top seeded Frisch and #4 North Shore will square off after knocking off the two city teams that we just discussed. The Cougars downed Heschel 9-1 behind 5 goals from senior Judah Volodarsky and the Stars knocked off Ramaz 7-4. In the other half of the bracket, TABC advanced over DRS 12-5 behind a 5-pack from Avishai Avidan and will await the winner of tomorrow night's contest between SAR and Kushner. Girls varsity soccer sees half of its semifinal field set as each bracket saw a game played over the weekend. Frisch had themselves a good Shabbos following a 4-3 win over Maayanot on Friday afternoon and will now await the winner of SAR and Heschel, happening tomorrow night and Kushner continued their perfect season drubbing Ramaz to advance to face either SKA or North Shore, which will take place tonight. Heading outdoors, the quarterfinals are set in both boys and girls tennis. On the Boys side, DRS takes the top seed going undefeated at 6-0 while dropping only one single match of the 30 played this season and will host SAR with the winner to play either Frisch or Magen David. The other side will see West top seed Heschel meet up with YDE with the winner playing either Flatbush or Ramaz. For the girls bracket, Flatbush and Frisch both finish the season atop their respective divisions at 6-0 and will host Ramaz and SKA respectively. Flatbush's bracket will contain Heschel and Central, while Frisch's will have HAFTR and SAR. To the diamond where we enter the final week of the regular season in all 4 leagues. Boys varsity softball knows it's #1 seed as YDE wraps up an 8-0 season with a 10-5 win over Shaare Torah on Friday. DRS currently sits atop the East at 7-1, but will need to wait for MAY to finish their season as the Eagles sit at 5-1 and can finish in a dead heat with the Wildcats depending on their remaining two games with Darchei. Out West TABC sits at 5-2-1 but can still be caught by Maor with a win over Frisch tomorrow night, which could also result in a deadlock in the West as the two teams tied each other in their only season meeting. Meanwhile in Baseball, Flatbush topped JEC to move a win away from clinching the East when they square off with HAFTR tonight in Maimonides Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Frisch will hope to do the same out West when they meet JEC tonight in New Jersey, after a missed opportunity Sunday, which resulted in a 2-2 tie with Kushner and last night with a 1-0 loss to SAR. JEC is looking to jump Kushner into the final payoff spot, which they can do with a win or a tie. The 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place June 12th in HAFTR. The event will once again couple as a fundraiser for Hatzolah. To help the kids reach their $10,000 goal, please reach out at mwtournament@gmail.com to donate or sponsor. As the School year comes to a close, you can still get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. Good Morning Nachum! The Indoor Spring Regular Season has come to a conclusion. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we'll give you the rundown of the final week and catch you up on what the postseasons have in store. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. In Girls Hockey, the Ramaz Rams and SAR Sting have won the West and East divisions, respectively. SAR clinched the top spot by virtue of a 3-2 overtime win over HAFTR this past week to leave HAFTR squarely in 2nd. The Rams also needed overtime, but would wind up in a 0-0 tie with Kushner as both teams gear up for the playoffs. Joining those 4 will be Heschel who will host HAFTR and Frisch who will travel to face Kushner. The Ramaz Boys Volleyball team will also enjoy a bye, taking the regular season crown after SAR defeated North Shore in straight sets last night. Ramaz finishes undefeated at 8-0 with North Shore right behind them in 2nd place. North Shore already knows who their semifinals opponent will be as Flatbush, the 3 seed, kicked off the playoffs last night with a 3 sets to 1 win over YDE. Ramaz will take on the winner of DRS and SAR, that game, TBA. In Boys Varsity Soccer the East Division was also decided on a tie as DRS and North Shore squared 6-6. The deadlock gives the division to the Wildcats, but will force them into the 3rd seed as they will finish behind SAR and Frisch, winners of the Central and West respectively. SAR eked out an 8-7 victory over Heschel to finish the season with Junior Gabe Duerr finishing off the double-hat trick with the game-winner and Frisch downed Kushner 9-5. Speaking of Frisch, the JV Cougars finished off their season undefeated with an 8-4 win over the Cobras. TABC, SAR and North Shore will finish in order behind them. In Girls Varsity, SKA, SAR and Kushner each go 8-0 to top their respective divisions and in Girls JV a virtual tie at the top as Frisch and Ma'ayanot each finish at 7-1, each taking their only losses on the season to each other. For the first time since 2019, the Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place. The 8-team event, once again a fundraiser for Hatzolah will take place June 12th in HAFTR. Stay tuned for more details, including the participating schools, over the coming weeks. As the School year comes to a close, you can still get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Good Morning Nachum! As quickly as the Spring season has come, we are on the precipice of it being over for several teams as the indoor sports enter their final week of the regular season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Ramaz continues to rise in Boys Volleyball and Girls Hockey and Frisch knocks off Heschel on the court and on the diamond to shake up the top of the divisions as we roll down the home stretch. All that and more to come! Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Ramaz and North Shore appear on a collision course at the top of the Boys Volleyball League as both stayed undefeated this past week. The Rams improved to 7-0 following a 5-set win over SAR last night, coming back from dropping the first 2 sets and needing extras to survive the third set 27-25 before taking the last two sets, leaving them a game against Frisch away from an undefeated season. For the Stars, it was a 3-set win over YDE that helped them improve to 6-0. North Shore will meet up with HAFTR tomorrow night and then have to meet up with SAR to finish out the season. The Ramaz girls are showing out as well as we head down the home stretch in Girls Hockey. The Rams took 2 wins on the week, knocking off Ma'ayanot 2-1 and blanking Central 4-0 last night. That combined with Frisch's dominating 4-0 win over Heschel last night puts Ramaz in the driver's seat for the top spot in the West with only a matchup with Kushner next Monday remaining. A win will guarantee the Rams the top seed in the Western Conference heading into the post-season. In Boys Softball, TABC dropped from the ranks of the undefeated Thursday night, first losing to MTA 8-3 and then winding up in a 6-6 tie with Maor. The unfortunate night dropped their record to 4-1-1 and put them percentage points behind SAR in the West. The results also open the door for Hillel, who find themselves within range of the top spot as the season rolls to a conclusion. In Baseball, Frisch had themselves quite the week, taking out two of the top teams in the league. Thursday night saw the Cougars knock off previously undefeated MTA 3-1. Last night, it was a masterful one-hitter from Jack Ruditzky over the East-leading Heschel Heat 3-0 to propel them to a 5-0 record, the last remaining undefeated team in the league. The Cougars will play three more games, but have clearly staked their claim as the favorite for the league crown. As the Spring season continues you can get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. Good Morning Nachum! The Yeshiva League has returned from Pesach break and the calendar has turned to May, leaving just over a month and a half left of the 2022 Spring season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, two no-hitters thrown in Baseball, DRS continues to run away with Boys Soccer and the last undefeated team falls in Girls Hockey, Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg The Mets weren't the only Metropolitan area team throwing a no-hitter this past week. In fact, the Yeshiva League, saw not one, but two no-hitters on the baseball diamond. The first came Thursday night as Yehuda Speyer struck out 17 North Shore batters en route to a 9-0 JEC win over the Stars. It was the first of two wins for the Thunder on the week also shutting out DRS on Sunday. The other No-Hitter on the week came last night, as MTA's Gavriel Rudman blanked Kushner 6-0. MTA is also riding a shutout streak, as Rudman was on the mound on Friday as the Lions defeated DRS 10-0. Rudman had 12 strikeouts in the win, as the Lions lead the West with a 5-0 record. Also taking two wins on the week, Frisch, downing TABC 4-2 and doubling up Ramaz 8-4. Girls Hockey has no more undefeated teams left as last night saw the last two remaining 0's turn to 1's in the loss column. Heschel saw its 5-0 record fall after getting run over by Kushner 7-0 in Kushner. Heschel still leads the West with 10 points, but join a group of Kushner, Frisch and Ramaz, all with 1 loss. Ramaz's entry into the group brought us our second undefeated-no-more as the Rams downed SAR 2-1. SAR now finds itself tied atop the East with HAFTR at 4-1, both teams have one game between them and their head-to-head meeting in what will likely decide the division on May 11th. Also on the week, Central got their first win, defeating North Shore 5-2 and HANC defeated SKA 3-1. Moving over to Soccer where DRS just keeps on kicking. The Wildcats picked up 3 wins, including 2 by identical 12-4 scores over Rambam and HANC. DRS is now 6-0 and have outscored their opponents 70-20, holding both the top spot in Goals Scored and Goal Differential thus far. Frisch and SAR have stayed undefeated as well. The Cougars defeated JEC and Hillel to stay a perfect 5-0 atop the West, 1 point ahead of TABC while the Sting downed Heschel 11-6 to improve to 3-0 in the Central. Finally in Girls Soccer, DRS and SAR see their female counterparts still undefeated as SKA defeated HAFTR and the Sting blanked Central to both move to 5-0. But the top record goes to the Kushner Cobras who stand at 6-0 after narrowly escaping perennial powerhouse Ma'ayanot 7-6. The Rapids, sit behind them in the West with a record of 5-3. As the Spring season continues you can get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Good Morning! As we roll towards Pesach, all Spring sports have now commenced, giving us an action packed 2nd week of April to discuss. Straight ahead, on the JM in the AM Sports Update, we'll kick around some soccer scores and Hockey, Softball and Baseball are just a swing away. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The Diamond Sports are here and all but one team in Boys Varsity Softball have thrown their first pitches. In the East, MAY and DRS have jumped out to 4-0 records, each sweeping doubleheaders with Rambam in the process. The two teams will meet at the end of April in what could be the determining factor in who takes the division. Out West 4 teams are 2-0 and will await the other side of the Pesach break to separate from each other. In Girls Softball, SKA and Ma'ayanot have jumped out to 2-0 records atop the East and West respectively. Central, HANC and Hillel are each 1-0 and four other teams have at least 1 win on the early season. In Baseball, TABC and MTA are 2-0. MTA opened the season with a 10-3 win over SAR and a 5-4 win over JEC, while TABC upended Heschel and Ramaz. For Ramaz, a low end to the week that started with a 5-0 win over North Shore behind a phenomenal 19 strikeout effort by Junior Max Tanz. Back indoors, girls hockey continues, where Frisch appeared poised to bump up behind Heschel's hot start, defeating SKA 9-2 and Ma'ayanot 2-0, but was shutout last night by Ramaz, 1-0. The loss puts the Cougars and the Rams into a tie at 2-1, 1 point behind Ma'ayanot for 2nd in the West. Both have 2 games in hand on the Rapids, who split the week, adding a 2-1 win over SKA to the Frisch loss. Out East, HAFTR and SAR continue to separate themselves from the pack, each taking a win on the week. In Boys Varsity soccer, DRS, North Shore and Frisch each added wins on the week to up their records to 3-0. DRS and North Shore each defeated HANC, while Frisch topped JEC. Heschel remained undefeated with a drubbing of Magen David, while TABC preserved a 1-point lead in the West doubling up Kushner 12-6. Tennis has also gotten off to a smashing start for DRS, who lead the boys East division with a 3-0 record, sweeping Rambam, North Shore and Flatbush in all 15 matches played on the early season. On the Girls courts, Central has also jumped out to a 3-0 record, sweeping Shulamith and Magen David after narrowly edging out North Shore 3-2. As the Spring season continues you can get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, chag sameach, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Good Morning! Now that the Madness of March has drawn to a close, we turn our attention to the Spring sports as we work our way down to the last few weeks of the 2021-2022 school year. Straight ahead, on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Boys Volleyball, Girls Hockey and Soccer take center court. Good Morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
The last champion of the Girls Hockey league has jumped out to the head of the pack in the early going. The Heschel Heat have opened up a 5-0 record, outscoring opponents 18-0 in the process. Heschel's final three games of the season will come in May, against perennial West division powerhouses, Kushner, Maayanot and Frisch. Out East, HAFTR has the top spot at 3-1, taking 3 in a row, including a 3-2 overtime win over Maayanot after dropping their season-opener to Heschel, 1-0. SAR and SKA are right behind them, but in this early season, its anyones ball game. In Boys Volleyball, SAR has taken the early lead, winning 3 games without dropping a set. Two-time defending champ Ramaz is right behind them at 2-0, also yet to drop a set. Flatbush and Frisch have won their season openers, while North Shore has not yet begun their season. Everyone else is looking for their first win after slow starts. Boys and Girls varsity soccer have just gotten started. Boys soccer has seen 11 of the 16 teams pull in a win, with no team playing more than three games. Kushner and DRS are both 2-0 with DRS scoring 24 goals in their 2 contests to make them an early favorite in the East. Meanwhile in Girls soccer, Kushner has opened up a massive advantage in the West at 4-0, outscoring their opponents 50-7. SAR leads the Central at 3-0, with the East just really getting their feet under them as HAFTR leads a group of 3 teams with one win. In JV Boys Soccer, Frisch, SAR and TABC have each amassed 2 wins, while Girls JV sees Maayanot at the top in the early going with a 3-0 record. As the Spring seasons kick off, please continue to get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. Good Morning, We at the JM in the AM Sports Update join the rest of the Nachum Segal Network family in asking for your help, given recent events. The Lower East Side studio was home to many live in-person Season premieres and tournament previews, as well as the first ever edition of The Court Report. Please help support our Network and in doing so, support Nachum, who has been there to support us for so long. With absolutely no real way to segue off of that - Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck tournament wraps up the Winter sports calendar, Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. The 2022 Red Saracheck basketball tournament returned in grand fashion after a few years on the sidelines due to the Covid pandemic. 24 teams, the largest gathering, converged on Yeshiva University to rekindle the greatest weekend in Yeshiva Basketball. Of the 24 teams, 10 of them were from our very own Yeshiva League, including semifinalists, Frisch and TABC, runner-up SAR and league champion Ramaz. Early on, Tier 1 was destined for intrigue when Ramaz and Frisch were upended by 10th seeded Magen David and 11th seeded Yavneh respectively. #8 Flatbush survived a scare, while SAR, TABC and DRS easily advanced to Day 2. Friday's action saw three Yeshiva League teams advance to the Tier 1 semis as SAR topped Flatbush, DRS defeated Shalhevet and TABC downed Yavneh. A bid for four Metro area teams fell just short as Magen David jumped out to an early 19-10 advantage over 2 seed Valley Torah, but could not hold on, being outscored 48-31 the rest of the way. Semifinal Sunday brought its own fireworks as Isaac Solomon nailed two free-throws in the final minute to cap a furious 4th quarter comeback for the DRS Wildcats to knock off the top-seed SAR Sting. Their Monday opponent would be the #2 seed Valley Torah Wolfpack, winners over TABC by 11 after holding them to 12 total second-half points. The Wolfpack rode hot 3-point shooting to a 14 point lead with 11 minutes to go in the contest, but like in the Yeshiva League championship last week, that's when things got interesting. The Wildcats went on a 15-0 run to lead 43-42. Gabriel Rbibo gave the Wolfpack the lead again at 44-43 and on the ensuing Valley Torah possession, a strip by DRS star Ari Ivry appeared destined for a fast-break lay-in, but Wolfpack leader and tournament MVP Johny Dan made the play of the weekend coming in from behind and swatting away the opportunity. A David Paz 3-pointer on the other end of the floor, and Valley Torah was on their way home with the 2022 Tournament trophy, ultimately finishing with a 55-45 victory. Also taking home trophies, Ramaz rebounded to take home the Tier 2 championship defeating Ida Crown, and fellow Yeshiva League participants MTA and HAFTR met in the Tier 3 final, with the host Lions walking away victorious. With that, we wrap up the Winter portion of the Yeshiva League and turn our attention to Spring. Starting next week, we will bring you all off the soccer, boys volleyball and girls hockey action and get you geared up for the diamond sports as the month of April rolls on. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, underdogs reign supreme as the 2021-2022 Winter season draws to thrilling conclusions, with more still to come! All that and more, good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Boys JV Hockey and the two boys basketball leagues all wrapped up their seasons over the last seven days. We start out last Tuesday night where DRS and TABC met in Frisch for the JV Hockey championship. TABC opened the scoring in the 2nd period, on a shorthanded effort by Sophomore Shay Fields. DRS would battle back though and within a two-minute stretch, Freshman Yitzy Yudin and Sophomore Ariel Rogoff gave DRS a 2-1 lead that it would never relinquish. The championship is the first for the Wildcats on the JV level since the 2014-2015 season. We move over to Basketball where the championships took center stage at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday night. The night kicked off with an all-East JV contest between Magen David and North Shore. The #3 Stars jumped out early with hot 3-point shooting to take a 21-9 lead in the 2nd quarter. The Warriors would ride the press and climb all the way back to tie the game at 37-37 with over a minute to go. Each team would have an opportunity for the win, but neither could hit and the game would go to overtime. In the extra session, North Shore would jump out to a 5- point lead at 46-41 with under 30 seconds to go. Magen David would close the gap to 3 and have a chance to tie at the buzzer, but the open look from beyond the arc would not go, giving North Shore the 46-43 victory and its first JV Championship. Sophmore Center Ben Abizadeh, a force on both ends of the floor took home a well-deserved game MVP. In the Varsity Championship, an all West battle between #1 SAR and #2 Ramaz saw SAR force Ramaz into a lackluster shooting first half, opening up a 19-6 lead going into the locker room and a 26-12 lead with 11 minutes left in the contest. From that point on, it was all Ramaz. The Rams rode a 17-2 run the rest of the way taking their first lead of the game on a Cy Aminzadeh pull up jumper with just 12.7 left to go in the contest. SAR would get one last possession with the ball, but a last second shot would fall just short as Ramaz claims their first varsity championship since 2010. Aminzadeh paced Ramaz through the early shooting woes and would claim the game MVP, leading the victors with 11 points in the comeback effort. Both teams will be back on the court again this coming Thursday when the 2022 Red Saracheck Tournament kicks off at YU. This year's tournament will feature 24 teams, the largest in history, 10 of which are from our area. Action kicks off Thursday morning at 10am with the top seed Sting looking to rebound against Berman Academy. You can catch a full-day's worth of action only on Macslive.com. As the tournament rolls on, please continue to get all the latest information from and be sure to follow Yeshiva League Pass on Instagram. And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Thanks Nachum!
The first fall champion since 2019 has been crowned, and it's a familiar face in a familiar place. We'll recap the Boys Varsity Hockey Championship and set the stage for the next week in the Yeshiva League, straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity Hockey has its 2022 champion, and it just so happens to be the same team that won its last championship back in 2019, the Frisch Cougars. The West 2nd seed Frisch Cougars dominated their rivals, the West top seed TABC Storm 5-3 in BPY on Sunday night. The Cougars were able to overcome three one-goal deficits and a hat trick by Storm senior AJ Seplowitz with a team effort, putting home three goals in the final 6:13 of the game for the 5-3 victory. Senior Sam Weinberger earned MVP honors scoring two goals that bookended the Cougar effort. Junior Jacob Feit added two goals of his own. Frisch has now appeared in the last 4 varsity championships played, winning in their last two of those appearances.
JV Hockey will look to do the same tonight when DRS and TABC square off in Frisch at 8PM. TABC downed HAFTR in their semifinal contest last Tuesday night by the score of 6-1 to earn their way into yet another championship game. The two teams faced off in the regular season, with TABC upending the Wildcats in Overtime 4-3. That game will be carried live on MYHSAL.com through a broadcast of the Yeshiva Sports Network sponsored by Yeshiva League Pass and Camp Dovid Hockey Camp.
Basketball will look to name its JV and Varsity champions this Sunday night. The JV Championship will lead off the proceedings and will feature two teams who earned their way to the finals through upsets. The East #2 and #3 seeds Magen David and North Shore will square off at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University, after knocking off Frisch and Flatbush the respective West and East top seeds. The two teams split the regular season series and will rely on the championship as their "rubber-match," to decide who will be the 2022 champions.
That game will be followed by the Varsity championship, which will feature Ramaz, winner of their semifinal matchup over Frisch 62-45, last night, behind 24 from Senior Julius Rubenstein , and the winner of tonight night's semifinal between TABC and SAR. The All-West semifinals came to pass last Tuesday night when Frisch upended East top seed DRS 56-55. The JV championship is slated for 6:30 with the varsity finals tipping off at around 9 PM. Like hockey, you can find the broadcast for both championship games by going to MYHSAL.COM and clicking on the link on the homepage.

Thanks Nachum!
This Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated to the memory of my father Marty, Avraham Menashe Ben Dov Be'er HaLevi on his 16th Yahrtzeit.
The playoffs have arrived and boy have they produced fireworks. We'll take you through all of the week's postseason action straight ahead on this Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I'm Elliot Weiselberg
Varsity Hockey starts us off with two major upsets. Last night saw West #4 SAR upend East #1 DRS on the road 4-2. Junior Gabriel Hornblass paced the Sting with 2 goals in the victory. The win for the Sting avenges a regular season embarrassment at home and will mark the third time in the last 4 varsity hockey playoffs that one of the #1 seeds did not reach the varsity semifinals and the first time that a #4 seed has defeated a #1 seed since the 2017-2018 season, when West #4 Frisch defeated East #1 DRS. Speaking of which, the Sting will now advance to play Frisch in Frisch following the Cougars decimation of Magen David. Frisch and SAR each split the season series with home victories. As we speak about that 2017-2018 postseason, this will be the first time that the two have faced in the post-season since the championship game of that playoff season. On the other side of the bracket, though not a seeding upset, a ranking upset nonetheless. East #2 HANC behind the stellar play of Junior goalie Joey Diamond defeated West #3 MTA 2-1. The Hurricanes will travel to TABC who have already had to deal with solid goaltending in their 5-0 win over East #4 Rambam that was 0-0 for the majority of the first two periods in Senior goalie Sam Korman’s final game as a Rambam Raven.
Unlike Varsity, JV Hockey went a little more "by-the-numbers" as both 2 seeds defeated the 3 seeds to advance. Continuing the goalie theme, East #2 HAFTR defeated West #3 Frisch 3-0 behind a shutout from Hawk goalie freshman Max Newmark. On the other side West #2 Kushner avenged an early season loss to Rambam, knocking off the Ravens in Kushner by the score of 4-2. As a result, each will travel to the opposing division's #1 seed, for Kushner, that would be DRS and for HAFTR, that will be TABC. That game will be next Tuesday night.
Varsity Basketball has ¾ of its quarterfinals set with an upset to note as well. East #5 YDE upended East #4 Waterbury in Overtime 53-50. YDE will advance to play West #1 SAR, date and time to be determined. The other two matchups saw the favorites advance as East #3 Magen David won the battle of the Magens defeating East #6 Magen Abraham by 19. The Warriors will take on West #2 Ramaz on Monday. In the West, #3 TABC defeated #6 Hillel 40-30 to advance to face East #2 Flatbush. East #1 DRS will await the winner of the remaining First round contest between West #4 Frisch and #5 MTA.
JV Basketball’s post-season will get a boost tonight as Ramaz and North Shore and Flatbush and SAR will face off in the quarterfinals. SAR advanced to the Quarters after defeating JEC in the West play-in game 52-37. The only quarterfinal contest that has been played saw West #1 Frisch throttle DRS 81-52. Frisch will advance to play the winner of the only Quarterfinal contest remaining after tonight, which will see East #2 Magen David host West #3 TABC on Thursday night.

Thanks Nachum! Happy 2-22-22 everyone! As we roll out of President's Day, the Yeshiva League has wrapped up its Fall and Winter regular seasons. All hockey and basketball playoff matchups are set and we’ll take you through all of them straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update. Good morning, I'm Elliot Weiselberg.
Boys Varsity Basketball saw a potentially messy situation alleviated when Flatbush, Magen David and Waterbury each picked up wins, avoiding a possible 5-way tie for seeds 2-6. As a result of their victories over HANC, Heschel and Magen Abraham, respectively, the three teams finish at 9-5 with easy tiebreaks behind East #1 DRS. The Falcons will join the Wildcats with a bye while #3 Magen David will meet up with #6 Magen Abraham tomorrow night and #4 Waterbury will host #5 YDE. The winners of those contests will head West to meet up with either #1 SAR or #2 Ramaz. Meanwhile heading East will be the winner of tomorrow night’s contest featuring #3 TABC and #6 Hillel and next Thursday night’s contest between #4 Frisch and #5 MTA. The Cougars earned the right to host their first-round contest following a 54-49 win over TABC last week. In JV Basketball, Flatbush earned the East #1 seed, defeating HAFTR 45-40 and winning the tiebreak over Magen David who will slot in as the East #2 seed. Flatbush will await Thursday night’s play-in round game between SAR and JEC for the West #4 seed, while Magen David will host West #3 TABC next Thursday. The Storm were able to avoid the play-in round with wins over Frisch and Kushner on consecutive nights. The Cougars entered that matchup already having the West top seed locked up and will square off with East #4 DRS tomorrow night. The final first round matchup will feature West 2nd seed Ramaz hosting East #3 North Shore. That game will take place next Tuesday night. Moving over to hockey, where Boys varsity ended the season with some mostly expected results. TABC took 2 wins on the week to wrap up the West #1 seed and will square off with #4 Rambam on Sunday night. The winner will meet up with the winner of tomorrow night’s matchup between East #2 HANC and West #3 MTA out in Uniondale. MTA finished in the 3 seed by virtue of Frisch’s win over JEC. The win earned the West #2 spot for Frisch, who will face off with East #3 Magen David tonight, where the winner will meet up with either East #1 DRS or West #4 SAR who will meet up next Monday night. In JV Hockey, the final piece of the puzzle was determined Wednesday night as Kushner defeated MTA to clinch the West #2 seed and eliminate the Lions from playoff contention. Kushner will now host East #3 Rambam this coming Monday night with the winner to face East #1 DRS, while in the other bracket West #1 TABC will await this Saturday night’s contest between East #2 HAFTR and West #3 Frisch. Good Morning Everyone!
It's been quite a stretch since we last brought you the JM in the AM Sports Update. Almost a full winter regular season has passed by, and with the playoffs on the horizon, now is a good a time as any to bring you up to speed on where teams stand in hockey and basketball. We'll set up the last week of the regular season and look ahead to the playoffs. All that and more, straight ahead, I'm Elliot Weiselberg. Hockey's JV and Varsity East divisions have their playoffs set, while the West still has spots to be determined. In Varsity, the top 4 teams in each of the two conferences make the playoffs with the top 2 in each earning first round home games. The East will see DRS, HANC, Magen David and Rambam advance. Rambam worked their way into the postseason by overtaking Flatbush on the play of goalie Sam Korman who backstopped the Ravens to a 2-0 win over HANC and a 2-1 win over Flatbush themselves this past Sunday, knocking the Falcons from playoff position. The West is somewhat more complicated as the 4 playoff teams have been determined, but most of the order is still up in the air. SAR will be the 4 seed and will travel to DRS in a repeat of a confrontation from last week, where DRS dominated 7-3. In front of the Sting, three teams sit at 21 points. TABC will have the advantage, having two games still remaining with two non-playoff teams, Kushner and Ohr Yisroel. Any slip ups will open the door for Frisch, who will face off Motzai Shabbos with JEC. Frisch put the pressure to the Storm this past weekend following a 2-1 overtime victory over TABC in Frisch to sweep the season series. Waiting out the stretch is MTA, who have no more games left, but still have a shot at the two seed if Frisch loses their finale and TABC takes a point in either of their last 2 games. Otherwise, the Lions will travel to HANC in Round 1 In JV, the top 3 teams in each of the two conferences make the playoffs, with the division winners getting a bye. DRS and TABC have locked up the East and West, respectively. Behind DRS, HAFTR takes the 2 seed and will host the West #3 seed, while Rambam locked up the East #3 seed Monday night, avenging an early season loss to North Shore 5-1 to overtake them for the final spot. Out West, behind TABC, Kushner has locked up a playoff spot, but wont know whether it will be the West #2 or #3 seed until the Cobras face MTA tomorrow night. Currently in 2nd with 10 points, Kushner needs only one point to lock up a home playoff spot. Meanwhile, MTA will be fighting for their playoff lives. A regulation loss will deadlock them into a tie with Frisch, who will overtake them based on tiebreakers
In Varsity Basketball, the top 6 teams in each of the 2 conferences advance with the top 2 teams each getting byes. The Varsity West has its 6 participants and its 2 bye teams. SAR ran away with the division, with a 13-1 record, while Ramaz earned the 2 seed following wins over Heschel, Frisch, Kushner and Ohr Yisroel to open up the month of February. TABC, sitting at 10-3 will be the 3 seed. Frisch, MTA and Hillel will be 4-6. Frisch currently sits at 8-5 with a game against TABC. Out East, DRS is tops at 12-2, but 2-6 is a mess, as Flatbush, Magen David, Waterbury and YDE currently sit at 8 wins, meanwhile Magen Abraham rounds out the final East playoff spot and can also still reach 8 wins. In JV, the top of the East is ruled by Brooklyn as Magen David currently sits at 8-2, however, Flatbush at 7-2 can cause a little chaos with a win over HAFTR tonight. Doing so would deadlock the 2 teams and force a coin flip to break the tie for the conference top seed. North Shore at 6-3 could still make waves at the top of the division, but already knows that it will be in the playoffs, while DRS and HAFTR squared off last night in their battle for the final East berth. Out West, Frisch, Ramaz and SAR have clinched berths, TABC can do the same with a win tonight versus Frisch or tomorrow against Kushner, and JEC has the edge over Kushner for the final spot in the West.
