In 2021, Jonathan witnessed one of the most powerful music education workshops he's ever attended. Led by Mika Inouye, Sarah Mano Inouye, Mei Li Inouye, and Seidi Inouye, these four taught music educators Japanese American incarceration but through the lens of music. Back in 2025, Jonathan finally was able to interview 3/4 of the sisters, talking about how they made the workshop and the importance of remembering this atrocity. Please. Teachers, students, and admin are all dealing with burnout and trauma in simultaneous and vastly different ways. In this episode, we talk with Melissa Salguero, an incredible music educator at P.S.48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School in the South Bronx.
She has built the music program from the ground up and has raised over $200,000 for her music program. Salguero was honored as the Lincoln Center Arts Teacher of the Year in 2013. In 2014, after P.S. 48 suffered a break-in, Salguero was invited to represent the school on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." She was named the Grammy Music Educator Award Recipient in 2018.
We speak with Melissa about bringing respect into the classroom, creating a safe learning environment, and bearing the courage to teach beyond the standards to meet the students where they're at—even (and perhaps especially) when that means addressing hard topics.

Jon Seligman, Crystal Pridmore, and Sasha Stone share memories and experiences from the 2019 AOSA Professional Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. 8 CVESD music teachers shared a house for the weekend, and many new friends were made! From ukulele jams in the living room to family dinners to incredible conference sessions, this weekend was one that will stay with us for many years. We called in Marc Keehmer, Zoe Kumagai, and Sandra Camarena as they were on the road for Thanksgiving break to share their thoughts as well.

Classroom management looks different for a music teacher with hundreds of students than it does for a general ed teacher with 20-30. How do you create a warm, safe, well managed music classroom when you process hundreds of students through the classroom every single week? This episode we talk about expanding our musical abilities and the fear that can come along with not being good enough. As music teachers we are asked to teach things that aren't necessarily in our wheelhouse, and it's ok to be a couple steps ahead of our students. Teachers need to remember that we're human, it's totally ok to say "I don't know" or " I need help." We are here to encourage and help each other, not to compete or look down on others. If you are feeling down as a teacher please reach out, we're here for you, we don't have all the answers but that's ok.

This week we talk about the Chula Vista Elementary School District Collaborative Concert. How we went from thinking we'd have 40 kids and family members singing together around the rug at the library to accidentally flooding the library with over 200 people, how the concert exploded to over 800 kids and family members by the following year, and how we foster a sense of collaboration over competition in our partnership together. We believe that we only make each other stronger as we build up and show off each others' strengths, and this concert has become a powerful way to showcase those strengths.

Chula Vista Elementary School District is the largest elementary school district California. 5 years ago, there were no full time music or arts teachers in the district. All of that changed when Lauren Shelton began her work in the district. In just 5 years, she has brought more than 90 full time VAPA (Visual And Performing Arts) to serve the children in CVESD. In this episode, you will learn what led to the decision by CVESD to hire VAPA teachers. We get to learn a little about Lauren's upbringing, her strategy in building the VAPA program in the district, and get to hear the struggles and victories that she went through in the building process.
