In today’s episode, we sit down with Guy and Charlotte Cote of Cote Cattle Company in Granby, Massachusetts—and it’s a meaningful one, because their story isn’t just about starting a farm. It’s about bringing one back to life.

Charlotte’s family has owned the property since the 1940s, when her grandparents first established it. Over time, the land grew quiet—no barns, no animals, no daily rhythms of a working farm. But Guy and Charlotte decided to change that. They started small, rebuilt step by step, and turned the family place into the full-time operation it is today.

We talk about what it takes to revive a legacy, the challenges and wins along the way, and what it means to build something lasting—on ground that already carries generations of history.

In this episode, we sit down with Peter Sheppard and his daughter Heather Sheppard-Lunn of Sheppard Farm on Apple Hill in south-central Pennsylvania as they look ahead to a milestone 50th anniversary celebration. Peter shares how the fold began in 1976 with just six cows and one bull—and how decades of intentional breeding built a program centered on traditional Scottish Highland standards, calving ease, and foraging ability, resulting in 560+ registered animals in the National Herdbook.

Heather talks about launching their direct-to-customer grass-fed Highland beef sales in 2008, growing the herd to serve both beef buyers and brood cow clients, and preparing the next generation as her daughters get involved. Together, they discuss why they carefully screen buyers and what it means to bring home an Apple Hill Highland—clean genetics, classic conformation, and a long-term commitment to the breed.

The Glendenning Fiesta Sale is back for its 3rd Annual celebration in Celina, Texas, happening May 1st and 2nd—and this episode is your preview of the sale experience and the tradition behind it. In this episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand, we sit down with Mark Hubbell of Hubbell Longhorns in Hastings, Michigan, for a conversation rooted in legacy, growth, and passion. A 5th-generation cattle rancher, Mark’s family operation dates back to the late 1800s, evolving from a dairy and crop farm into the thriving Texas Longhorn, beef, and crop enterprise it is today.

From placing Longhorn horns on the front of his winter beater in high school to receiving his first Longhorn as a Christmas gift in 1995, Mark shares how a simple fascination turned into a lifelong calling. Today, Hubbell Longhorns spans roughly 900 acres, running about 250 head, with an impressive 125–150 calves expected in 2026. Through careful selection, retaining top heifers, and strategic herd growth, Mark has built a program focused on both quality and scale.

We also talk about the next generation—how his son Garrett joined the program and helped expand the herd—and what the Longhorn experience has taught Mark about patience, perseverance, and passion.

Josh shares what makes Battle on the Prairie a can’t-miss stop—built to showcase Longhorn evolution at its finest and bring the industry together in one electric setting.

Battle on the Prairie is a heifer and bull futurity focused on identifying select heifer calves that can mature into the elite, productive cows of tomorrow. We talk about the challenge of predicting which calves will become the best three-year-olds, the value of evaluating cattle and programs side-by-side, and the packed-coliseum atmosphere that includes sponsors and industry insight alongside the competition.

We also highlight the youth program, “Sawyer Spotlight,” created to give kids real ring experience with their heifer (parent-escorted) in front of the judges. It’s a non-judged class with announcer Q&A, encouragement, and awards for every participant—designed to build confidence and grow the next generation in this breed. In this episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand, we visit with Trevor Maxwell of Lone Chimney Longhorns at Maxwell Ranch, located in Glencoe, Oklahoma.

Trevor shares what it’s like to still consider himself a new breeder, how he works to help others just getting started, and why raising Longhorns is such a true family affair at Maxwell Ranch. When he’s not out in the pasture, Trevor also serves as a baseball coach at the local school, balancing ranch life with community life.

Since starting their herd in 2013, the Maxwells have grown to about 45-50 Longhorns, blending original Vanizm bloodlines with genetics from Cowboy Tuff Chex, Coach, Drag Iron, Tejas Star, and Tempter. Trevor talks about his passion for the breed, the joy of sharing Longhorns with others, and the excitement of continually diversifying their pedigrees.

Whether you’re a seasoned breeder or just starting out, this conversation is a reminder of why the Longhorn community is so special.

Today we have a special double episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand. We talk with Travis Johnson from in the sunny panhandle of Florida where he started raising Texas Longhorns a few years ago at his ranch, LTJ Longhorns. In the first episode, Travis shares how some long grass turned into an introduction to Terry King, purchasing his first longhorns & traveling to over a dozen sales &/or futurities in the first year. From there, he has grown his herd to 50+ head. The advice that has been given to him the most and the advice he would give other new breeders is to be patient; patience is the key to growing a good herd you'll be proud of.

Not only did Travis jump in feet first to the Longhorn breed, he also joined SETLA (Southeast Texas Longhorn Association), the area TLBAA affiliate. In the second part of today's episode, he shares how he became involved in SETLA and the importance & benefits of being an involved member in your area longhorn affiliate.

Travis is passionate about the herd, the SETLA organization and grateful for the mentoring he has received from Jimmy Jones, Terry King and many others. Fun fact, he's also passionate about little dessert cakes and nutter butters.

Today on From the Pasture with Hired Hand, Molly sits down with Ray Webb. Ray and his wife live in the beautiful Texas Hill Country just south of Marble Falls at their ranch, The Webb Family Farm. Molly and Ray talk about how he fell in love with Texas Longhorns long before he owned any and he provides insight to breeders who are just getting started. He shares the importance of introducing yourself to fellow breeders, a good photo of your animal and the value of asking questions. His herd is special to him for many reasons, but what you may find fascinating is he shares that his cows have a preference on the music they listen to when Ray is out in the field. (spoiler: apparently Webb cows have a flair for 70s disco every now and then!)

When people in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia and North Carolina are heard talking about an incredible set of horns they just spotted in a field, most would assume they had just seen an impressive whitetail deer. That is unless, of course, the field is owned by Leonard New River Ranch of Galax, VA. Their herd of Texas Longhorn cattle draws far more attention than a commonplace deer.

In 2019 they added their first registered Texas longhorn cow, and from that moment they were hooked. Shawn and Ellen started Tobin Longhorn Cattle Company in 2020 with the purchase of three heifers, one cow with calf at side, and a bull. With each passing year, they are continuing to grow. They have recently started taking genetic samples from the herd, and combining that with weights and measurements of each animal. They are hoping to produce animals that put the pounds on easily, that are feed efficient, with a tenderness to rival any breed of cattle, while not losing the characteristics of the Texas Longhorn that has made itself such a unique breed.

Diamond B Ranch was founded like many other programs in the industry, for the love of beautiful longhorns. We all know that a single longhorn in the pasture multiplies quickly, and for us, that first longhorn turned into a passion. Soon, a few head built a large herd and became a working ranch. We are located in the heart of the Texas Panhandle; while the grass is not always greener here, it is nutrient-rich and grows healthy, happy cattle. In 2021, we purchased our main herd sire, Cut’N Dried, and will be building our future around his boast-worthy genetics.
