One Man and his Therapist: Recent Episodes

Stephen Dalton | Zak Powers | Genuina Media

Ten years ago Stephen was lost. He needed guidance and help to find the person he knew was meant to be. One day, in 2015, after coming close to death and hitting new lows, he picked up the phone and called the number of a therapist in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland. The person who answered was a very respected Therapist called Zak. Zak went on to help Stephen find the person he was meant to be, and so much more. Zak helped Stephen get sober from alcohol and move into a thriving and deeply peaceful new chapter of his life. Then the therapy stopped for a few years, and both men went on with their lives.

But now, Stephen and Zak have decided to start Therapy again. Only this time, you are also invited to listen.

This, is One Man and his Therapist.

Real Therapy.

Real Growth.

Real Healing.

In today's session, Zak and Stephen discuss more about Stephen's grappling with what it is to be a man. Until Zak poses a very succinct question "why does this bother you so much?". As the episodes progress, we get closer and closer to the actual date that we release them on compared to the date they were recorded. But we are still a few months behind. With that in mind, this episode was recorded in late Spring 2024, but is being released today, October 1st 2024. The reason this is apt is because in this episode, there is much talk around the topic of sobriety. And why is October 1st related to Sobriety? Well in Ireland, it is the first day of the month of STOPTOBER, when lots of people experiment with stopping drinking for one month. And coincidentally, Stephen was recently interviewed for the Irish Independent around the topic of Sobriety and that article is also released today! So lot's of sobriety talk and familial addiction talk today. We wish you peace.Disclaimer: Welcome to our Podcast - ‘One man and his therapist’ wherethe opinions expressed by our presenters are entirely their own. Today I celebrate 4 years of sobriety. It’s been the best 4 years of my life on this wonderful adventure. When I stopped drinking I thought I was losing so much, I did not realise how much I was going to gain. My peace of mind (most of the time), a lot more joy on a daily basis, and of course my beautiful wife Rebeca who makes me laugh every day at least 100 times. Thank you to all of you for continuing to listen to the podcast, it’s a vulnerable thing to do, but I know that it helps lots of people and that makes it all worthwhile. If you’re starting out on a sober journey, just know it gets better and better if you stick with it. This weeks episode is just me reflecting on the last 4 years, and there’s also one of my meditations at the end. You can get access to lots of this content on my patreon as well. Details below:

In this weeks episode, I interview Rob Walsh, lead singer of 'The Panik Attaks', Dublin's finest punk outfit. Rob is sober for nearly 2 years and has a very interesting take on his own recovery and his own journey to Sobriety. I know there will be a lot of identity here for many. I also share my first Blog entry on why I believe the word 'Alcoholic' is outdated. Something for Every. Human. Here.

In this episode I am joined by Yoga Therapist Camilla O'Callaghan. Camilla lives in the West of Ireland and practices Yoga Therapy at her beautiful home in East Clare. She came to the studio a couple of months ago, to talk about her life with Yoga and how Yoga can help our minds and our bodies in infinite ways. Yoga has always been very important to me in recovery as a means of checking in with myself and getting back to basics. Something for Every. Human. Here.

In this episode the opening monologue is on the current world situation and then I talk to an old mate and a truly inspiring man called Calvin James. Calvin has fought many battles over the years, from his own booze and drugs battles to working with Dublin's homeless population. Today Calvin continues to fight battles, mainly for some of the world's most vulnerable people in places like Syria and Iraq. He has spent a lot of time there and has founded a charity called Syria's Vibes. He is a modern day warrior. This is a great episode. As always, something for Every Human Here.

In this episode I take a train ride out of Dublin and I visit the home of Frankie Lewis in County Wicklow, where we break bread (sorry!) and talk all things nutrition. Frankie is a hugely knowledgeable Nutritional Advisor and has so much to say on best food practice. One of the big elements of my sober life is maintaining a good, healthy attitude to food and Frankie taught me so much in the time I spent with her. If you would like a session with Frankie, listen to the episode for details on how to contact her and how to use my discount code. As always there is something for every human here. We all find keeping a balanced attitude to food difficult and Frankie is a great voice to listen to for a little help in this sometimes overwhelming area.

She has had some knocks over the last couple of years but has come back stronger than ever. In this episode the lovely Mike Rice joins me. Mike is an up and coming comedian and a very honest, open guy. In this talk, we as two young Irish guys sit down and talk about the Irish disdain for anyone who "makes it big", growing up in Ireland, drinking habits, general mental wellbeing and much more besides. I had a lot of fun recording this episode so I hope you take a lot from it.

In this first episode of the podcast I get interviewed by my former therapist Zak Powers. In the conversation we chat about what took me from my earliest innocent encounters with alcohol to how alcohol nearly took my life. Zak was my therapist for three and a half years and he knows me more than most people, in fact he probably knows me more than I know myself. So in this episode you have an opportunity to witness a former patient and therapist interact for about 50 minutes (the time I used to have in a therapy session with Zak). I think there should be a lot of identity here for most humans.
