- Use the curiosity gap!
Different
- Boring = forgotten.
- Different "sticks" in your memory - like curiosity (above).

I decided I must share this with you and, interview this young guy who is slowly putting Tim Ferris in the shadows as he travels across 40 countries:

You’ve got a new book coming! Is this your 1st book?

It is. I’ve contributed chapters to a couple other books on things like travel and unconventional education, but this is the first full length book that’s truly all mine. I finally get to get my whole message out there exactly the way I want, and that feels really good to me as an author. So far at least, my early readers seem to appreciate the strength and uniqueness of the message. And judging by the early success it has seen, it definitely won’t be my last book. I’m already thinking ahead to what comes next, particularly about the elements of this one that relate to self-discovery and education.

Your book is ranking #2 right now in “small business”?

I’m not sure of the exact ranking because that changes pretty frequently, but it already hit #1 bestseller status in the Public Relations category two weeks before launch from preorders alone. I think it has a good chance of doing the same in Small Business. I’m not an expert on Amazon launches or rankings, but I think that’s pretty darn impressive considering how little I knew about book marketing when I started this journey. It’s now up there next to books that have hundreds of five star reviews, and some really well-known names like Dan Norris, Gary Vaynerchuck, Peter Thiel, Chris Guillebeau, and Jon Lee Dumas, I had initially hired someone to handle the marketing for me because I didn’t want to to have to think about it, but that whole thing ended up blowing up in my face and I had to learn to do it all myself. I’m glad I was able to recover so well, though part of me wonders if it could have gone even better.

Launching Brand Identity, with Gregory Diehl.

This is one of my favorite authors and one of my FAVORITE books. Holding true to the "Digital Nomad" existance, I interview Gregory Diehl in Morrocco.

With the evening prayer blaring in the background from some UNKNOWN source in the highest (the Atlas mountains) mountains of North Africa, you can't help but imagine Humphry and Bacall, or Tim Ferris on the wing in some exotic land!

Excerpts from the interview:

How big was your existing audience? On a professional level, very small. I had a lot of clients I had worked with a lot of clients before in various aspects of sales and branding, so I reached out to them to help me refine the book and spread the word. They are the ones who ended up as case studies in the book. I also had a fairly large network of personal connections who didn’t necessarily care about the business subject matter of the book, but liked way of thinking and my take on things. They became some of my beta readers and early reviewers.

How did you build your audience before launch? My strength has always been cold outreach and direct conversation. I spent a lot of time on forums and in book groups on Facebook just reaching out to let people know what I was planning on doing with the book, which contributed to a lot of 99-cent presales and initial buzz when it launched. It was really encouraging to see the early readers start chiming in of their own accord to say glowing things about the book to back up my own claims.

What are the steps you used to launch? I understood two very important things:

The book needed to be good
I needed to generate immediate social proof that it was good.

I tried to accomplish both of these things at the same time by working with as many beta readers as possible to help me refine the rough draft, and most of them agreed to download the book on the day of launch when it was free and leave a “verified purchase” review. In addition, I used some services that allow you to reach out to potential reviewers and send them advance copies of your book in exchange for an honest review. As of now, about 2.5 months after launch. I have 84 reviews, with an average 4.8-star rating.

You used the pre-sale method - did that hurt or help you on launch day? It’s hard to say, since I have not tried the alternative, but my book did hit the #1 spot in Public Relations even in the preorder stage. I think having it up there for months before actual launch probably helped gain a lot of exposure from Amazon’s regular browsers. I plan to do the same again, but maybe only a month of preorder this time with the travel book.

Last week I had the excellent opportunity to interview a non-fiction AND SEO master, the one and only Dave Chesson of Kindlepreneur.com! If you are not familiar with SEO, it's "Search Engine Optimization", and it's the difference between a "Disappearing Camel" or a "Steady Stream". ???What??? You see most authors don't want to bother with a complicated website, they just want to publish in Amazon and let Amazon "do the rest".

BIG mistake!

The Question is: Do you want a disappearing camel, or a steady stream?

Your author website is your hub, everything you do in cyberspace should point back to your website.

And when you get your SEO right, it will supply a steady stream of sales, instead of the "disappearing Camels" you get when you launch a book in Amazon or do an occasional promotion.

SEO is NOT easy, but if you ask me, I LOVE this technique as compared to "just" publishing in Amazon. And it can make a non-profitable book in Amazon, profitable on your blog!

How the F do they do it?

Back-ends, SEO, WTF is that?!

Some authors just seem to EFFORTLESSLY make TONS of money on Amazon!

"SEEM" is the keyword here.

There is A LOT of effort going in to these sales.

What you don't see is all of the work they are doing on their websites/blogs.

THE SEO AUTHOR use his blog or website to supply a constant stream of traffic to his book.

The book can be anywhere: iTunes, Amazon, B&N, Kobo, you name it.

It doesn't matter where your book is, when you have a website that is ranking high in the "SERP's" i.e. Google, you can funnel those viewers anywhere you want -- you can even sell your books ON YOUR BLOG directly!

This is probably the most overlooked, and YET THE MOST POWERFUL method of all!

Especially if you are publishing super niche books that just can't make it on Amazon--Then forget Amazon and sell them on YOUR own blog!
