Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giannettino didn't hold back when asked about the denial of the city's proposed hotel tax. The measure, which needed to be brought forward by the city's Assembly representative, was ultimately killed. Giannettino called it a contradiction, because that representative, Assemblyman John Lemondes carried through similar measures for Weedsport and Skaneateles. That wasn't the only topic of discussion, though. GIannettino also gave an update on a city project that could be transformative for downtown and talked about the closure of Wells College.

On this episode of Inside the FLX we're talking about the work being done by law enforcement to curb work zone incidents, like the two fatal ones that happened in recent days across the region. Sheriff Brian Schenck from Cayuga County joined us via Zoom for his monthly touch base, discussing a range of issues. He says work zone safety starts with a mindset change from motorists. While law enforcement can write tickets - there aren't enough deputies to cover every work zone in a county like Cayuga. Schenck also discussed a visit from a Finger Lakes SPCA shelter dog, which he hopes can lead to new programming opportunities at the Cayuga County Jail down the road, as well as a recent three day training to better assess behavioral threats that lead to violence. Today on the show we are talking about rural healthcare. According to the National Institute for Healthcare Management -- 12.6 of the 19.6 million people who live in New York are considered medically underserved. Which means there aren’t enough primary care providers, high poverty rates, and a high elderly population. If you live in the Finger Lakes you probably know the doctors in your community by name and can count them on one hand. Moreover, if a trip to the hospital is necessary -- it’s probably a 25-30 minute drive away.
Enter a new pilot program between URMC and Five Star Bank aimed at addressing the access issues associated with rural healthcare. The program’s creators asked a simple question: What if there were common access points that took the stress out of connecting with a doctor? What if it could be as easy as going to the bank? Something people in rural communities often do several times a month. It leverages telemedicine portals by placing them in high-traffic banks in very rural communities, and according to those involved with its launch -- there's a lot of upside.

We also got the Mayor's perspective on a series of developments that are happening, or expected to happen over the next two years in the city. Properties like the former DeSales high school and Madia's market, the latter of which was destroyed in a fire a few years ago, will see major changes and Mayor Valentino hopes its a continuation of some really promising development in the city.

There are few things that frustrate people more than assessments. The process is complicated, and oftentimes, property owners assume that because their assessment is increasing by 5-10% that their property taxes will go up too. While that's sometimes the case, it's not universal. However, in recent years residents across the region have faced a very different problem: Assessments increasing by 100-300%. Today on episode #492 of Inside the FLX we're talking with Matt Horn, a former Geneva City Manager, who now serves as director of municipal services for MRB Group. The expansive conversation covers a lot of ground, including how assessments work, what the process looks like for municipalities, and the best practices for property owners as they navigate appealing an assessment.

When we spotlight local businesses on FingerLakes1.com one of the most-common questions we get from readers is "How do they do it?" Then when that feature hits social media, we'll see dozens of comments that read "Gee, I hope they can make it!"
People are genuinely very curious about small businesses and their survival for two reason: First, because they fail at a higher-frequency than large corporations; and second, because they're often in competition with much larger companies.
So, how do small businesses compete with big brands or corporations? On paper, it seems like an easy question to answer. But, it's not. It's complicated and varies by the business. More importantly though, it's hard to find small business owners willing to talk about it.
Earlier this month I caught up with Christine VanDusen, who hosts The Relentless Podcast, and owns Blush by CV Designs in Seneca Falls. We talked through this very reality - being a small business and competing with names like Walmart, Amazon, and more.

On episode #488 of Inside the FLX we're joined by Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck who discusses the recent death of two police officers in Onondaga County over the weekend. He spoke about the grief and emotions officers deal with when an incident like this occurs, as well as the reality that in current climate - 'routine incidents' aren't so routine. Schenck says training is important for community and officer safety.
We also discuss a new traffic campaign kicking off today to remind motorists of slow-moving agriculture vehicles, as well as money recently raised by the sheriff's office for the Special Olympics.

Coming up in just a few day the Seneca Housing Coalition will partner with dozens of agencies across the county and region for the third edition of its annual Housing Fair. The event, held during Fair Housing Month, aims to connect people to resources in the region as local, regional, and state leaders take aim at the growing housing crisis. What's being done to address the workforce shortage in the Finger Lakes? Unemployment rates are historically low. Most counties in the region reporting 3.5-4.25% jobless rates. That means employers are competing for a smaller pool of workers than ever before. Making matters worse, population decline has exacerbated the problem. For example, the National Institute for Health Care Management reports that 61% of primary care health professional shortages are in rural regions. And since 2005, 181 hospitals serving rural communities have closed. However, workforce challenges aren't limited to the healthcare. Agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and hospitality all face worker shortages.Today on Inside the FLX we're talking with Lynn Freid, from Finger Lakes Works, otherwise known as the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board. This organization is tasked with bridging the gap and identifying opportunities for workforce development in the region. She talked about the trends they're seeing, as well as the long-term goals here.

Geneva is set to discuss the creation of a ReUse Center aimed at reducing landfill waste during a public meeting on February 26 at the Geneva Community Center.
The initiative, a collaboration between the City and Town of Geneva, seeks to repurpose items like electronics, construction materials, and repairable goods, offering them at low costs while preventing unnecessary waste.

Educating people about the mental health crisis often feels academic. It's been labeled a crisis by experts who work in the field, but a new two-day training opportunity that's open to the public across the Finger Lakes hopes to bring it home. URMC Thompson Health is offering a mental health first aid training program. The goal is to help people identify the warning signs of someone dealing with a mental health situation or substance use disorder. We were joined in-studio by Kristin Seyfried and Amanda Reynolds to talk about the program and opportunity it presents for the Finger Lakes.

Deb Turner has led the Finger Lakes region's 211 Lifeline program for many years. It's a program dedicated to connecting people to services - dozens of them - across the region. Among the most-controversial items inside Governor Kathy Hochul's 2024-25 proposed state budget are massive cuts to school aid. Among the most-staggering cuts in the Finger Lakes - Penn Yan losing $2.2 million, Watkins Glen losing $1.9 million, or South Seneca losing 1.5 million.
This week we caught up with Hammondsport Superintendent Kyle Bower, who said his district stands to lose more than 30% of its state aid if Hochul's budget is adopted as-is. It's a reality that he says would devastate his district, and most other rural ones across the region.
Sports, programs, and staff would be cut if the budget is approved as proposed by Hochul; and the impact wouldn't stop there, Bower said. A significant tax increase would also be necessary to keep districts functioning.

On Wednesday, February 7, Geneva City Council held it's monthly meeting. Mayor Steve Valentino said the agenda looked light from the outside, but explained a couple key actions taken by Council during that session. He also discussed upcoming work on the tunnel under 5&20, which is one of the last components of the city's Downtown Revitalization Initiative, and storm sewer work that will contribute to improving the water-related issues.

When Summer Johnson ran for Marion Town Supervisor, she did so knowing that the community her family calls home needed someone dedicated. "I was called to action," Johnson said of her decision to run. In November, she was elected, and after being in office for a little more than a month - focus has shifted to finding ways to help better the community. Johnson left her full-time job to engrain herself in the responsibilities of being town supervisor, a decision she says will allow for better focus and attention to the Town and County's needs, like a housing shortage, declining population, and more recreational opportunities for young families moving into Marion.

After nearly two decades in the Auburn Enlarged City School District, Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo will retire in January. The announcement came earlier this month at a board of education meeting, in which he said it was time for new leadership. On Tuesday, Pirozzolo was in-studio, reflecting on a lengthy career in education, and the work ahead to guide the district through this transitional period.

She joined us on Monday to discuss the biggest headlines of the month, including work that's underway now to repair the Cayuga County Office Building after a damaging wind event earlier this month, as well as updates on how economic development money will be allocated moving forward, and an emergency order over the migrant crisis in the U.S.

The Wayne County Board of Elections office has undergone a major change. While most election offices are integrating new technologies and stress is building as the 2024 presidential election looms – this office is feeling better about how it will serve the community. While he's not sure what the data means, it's something that has local law enforcement's attention. He also talks about a new program he hopes local residents will take advantage of called 'Yellow Dot'. It helps first responders quickly sort out information about individuals when they're involved in an accident or medical emergency. He also discusses a report released by New York State on a suicide that happened at the Cayuga County Jail in November 2022.

While the Finger Lakes will always be known for some of the best wine, craft beer, spirits, and cideries in the world, many are exploring non-alcoholic options as younger generations are consuming less alcohol. In fact, data shows they're consuming 20-30% less alcohol than past generations. We were joined by the creator of nonROCaholic Chris Clemens, who is also known for his work on Exploring Upstate, a longtime blog that stopped publication in 2021 after a years-long run.

Known for over a century as a graduate-level healthcare institution the College recently announced new undergrad degree programs in imaging sciences and healthcare administration. In March voters in the village of Wolcott will cast an important ballot about the future of their community. The dissolution process has been started after a petition with 85+ signatures made its way to village hall last month. That petition means voters will cast a ballot on whether the Village should study dissolution, a process that would end village government there. The process is complex and one that many feel happens quickly, so we're going in-depth on how it works, what steps are involved, and some of the commonly asked questions about dissolving a layer of government with Matt Horn. He serves as director of municipal services for MRB Group and has seen this process up-close-and-personal.

What happens now that WellNow Urgent Care, one of the most-readily available healthcare assets across Upstate New York, is out-of-network for Excellus subscribers? The two sides had been locked in contentious negotiations, and on January 1, 2024 the clock expired. WellNow was forced to stop accepting Excellus health insurance, which means for those who visit -- they will be charged an out-of-network fee of $165 for a visit. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Biernbaum is back on Inside the FLX discussing the realities of healthcare access across the region, now that such a large number of residents have been alienated.

Aphrodite Jones is a New York Times best selling and prolific true crime author. She's hosted a television series, and more than one of her books has been turned into a movie. We sit down with her upon the release of her new book documenting the crimes of Karl Karlsen, a Seneca County man who killed his first wife and son nearly two decades apart, for financial gain. For nearly two years Jones spent 5+ days a week, interviewing Karlsen from prison, as well as his second wife. All told, the book was a nearly four year project, and one that Jones considers among her most-important work.

In this episode, we sit down with Billy Harvey, who works in bus sales, and talks with districts across Upstate New York about their fleet needs. Historically, there’s been a lot of focus on the decline of traditional media. Newspapers, radio, and television have had to evolved-or-shrink, with many across the U.S. shrinking or disappearing entirely. The health of the news business is something of an interesting debate, though. While digital is attributed to doing the most damage to traditional outlets like newspapers, shifting consumer habits have made it difficult for even the most nimble of digital orgs to survive. To discuss the state of media in the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and the U.S.-at-large — I sat down with Steve Keeler, longtime professor and Telecommunications Department Head at Cayuga Community College. Keeler recently retired, at least partially, after 36 years full-time with the College. We discussed the evolution of the news business, who’s doing the most-innovative work, and what an evolving media landscape means for consumers.

This week we’re taking a deeper look at the Pay Transparency Law, which took effect in New York on September 17, 2023. The law mandates employers with four or more employees disclose the compensation or salary range for every advertised job listing, promotion, or transfer opportunity. The law specifies that the disclosed compensation range must be the anticipated pay for any advertised job position, encompassing both the minimum and maximum annual salary or hourly compensation. In a matter of hours — longtime local music educator Dan Hacker will march with the Band Directors Marching Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. That appearance, nearly six years in the making, will mark a major milestone in his music journey. Hacker says the journey wouldn’t be complete or the same, if not for the impact his students had on him throughout his career. While Hacker doesn’t teach students day-to-day anymore — he was widely known, respected, and cherished in the Waterloo Central School District for his impact on students and the school’s arts programming. He joined us to talk about marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and how he’s preparing for it.

WellNow Urgent Care has announced that it will stop accepting Excellus BlueCross BlueShield insurance starting January 1, 2024. This decision is due to ongoing dispute regarding what WellNow deems as ‘unfair rates’ offered by Excellus. The urgent care provider has indicated that this change will take effect unless Excellus agrees to pay providers a ‘fair rate’. The dispute is centered around reimbursement rates, with WellNow requiring Excellus to elevate its rates for their services. Without an agreement, WellNow’s facilities would be classified as “Out of Network” for Excellus insurance holders — creating a healthcare access crisis across the Finger Lakes and Central New York. To discuss it all we are joined today by Dr. Rob Biernbaum, Chief Medical Officer for WellNow Urgent Care.

Newark Police Chief Richard Martin says it's been a surreal experience 'coming home' to serve as the community's law enforcement leader. It's been 22 years since Martin worked for the police department in the place he calls home, but the time was right.
"It's been surreal," Martin said recently appearing on Inside the FLX. "[I] felt it was time for change." The longtime law enforcement veteran spent more than a decade with the Rochester Police Department, as well as several years in academic, research, and administrative roles.

Many people know Ray Ciancaglini from his Second Impact Foundation, devoted to raising awareness of and preventing head injuries in young athletes.
Ray knows the issue firsthand, after suffering permanent damage from consecutive blows to the head as a professional boxer. He tours the country, talking to student-athletes about the importance of treating head injuries. He also gives talks on good character.
This summer, Ray held a Take Your Role Model to the Game night at a Geneva Red Wings game at McDonough Park. There, he met brand new Geneva Fire Chief Del Parotta, and Ray found out the department needs up-to-date firefighting gear. Ray will host a benefit dinner to help the department purchase that gear on October 6 at Belhurst Castle, with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. There will also be a raffle of sports memorabilia and other donated items.

The council approved the submission of a Restore NY grant application for 22 E. Genesee St.
The council approved the sale of a property at 197 State St. The property was acquired in 2019 through a tax foreclosure. Housing Vision Consultants will purchase the property and will invest approximately $5.6 million to create 16 one-bedroom apartments and common living space.
Appointed to the Public Arts Commission were Arthur Hutchinson, Janie MicGlire, Sara Douglas, Nicki Schwarz, and Sam Giannettino. Hutchinson's Harriet Tubman mural will be unveiled in downtown Auburn Saturday.
We also discussed the latest concerning the high level of HABs found in the city's drinking water from Owasco Lake. The city is using a power-activated charcoal system to treat the water.

In this episode, we talk with Sarah Whiffen, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.
FLCC has introduced a pair of mobile apps to help students get the help and services they need, and to make them aware of services they might not know about.
Finger Lakes Community College implemented new mobile-friendly applications to enhance student outreach and support during the pandemic: a chatbot service and online medical and mental health services. The goal is to identify students before their struggles turn into crises and prevent them from missing classes or leaving entirely. Initial results show students are taking advantage of these tools.
TimelyCare
FLCC implemented TimelyCare in fall 2021, providing free unlimited telehealth and emergency mental health support. All matriculated (meaning enrolled in a degree or certificate program) full and part-time students are covered. Students covered this fall, who continue in the spring semester, will have coverage through the summer of 2023.
- Telehealth: The wait for service is 10 minutes or less, designed to keep students out of urgent care, and doctor’s offices.
- Mental health: Unlimited Talk Now service for emotional crises with a licensed social worker and up to 14 scheduled mental health counseling visits per year.
- Results: During the 2021-22 academic year, 280 students posted 1,000 visits. Fifty-seven percent were for mental health care. So far in 2022-23: 363 students have registered to use the service.
EdSights chatbot
The college launched the EdSights chatbot service in January 2022 that uses artificial intelligence to identify struggling students. Students need to opt-in to get messages from the chatbot; 98 percent have done so.
How it works:
- Students can text the chatbot, programmed to respond to 350 questions provided by staff (Example: When does the library close?)
- In addition, the chatbot sends texts to all students to assess their needs, first by asking how they are doing and asking students to respond to a multiple choice answer. Based on their response, the chatbot asks further questions to narrow down the specific problem. (Example: If a student reports things aren’t going well, the chatbot asks if the problem is academic, financial, emotional, etc.)
Results:
Surveys sent out by the chatbot have an average 35 percent response rate, meaning just over 1 in 3 students are telling FLCC how they’re doing in a text format..

In this episode, I visited with Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark Gearan at his office in Coxe Hall.
We discussed his transition from heading the Peace Corps to higher education in the '90s, his first stint at HWS, his move to Harvard in 2017 to become President in Residence, and his work at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
We talked about his old job becoming available again when President Joyce Jacobsen decided to concentrate on teaching and writing a book, how HWS has changed in his five years away and the challenges facing higher education, particularly those facing liberal arts schools.
We also discussed the connections HWS has built with the Geneva community and the Geneva school system.
We talked about our increasingly divisive politics. Gearan said it's a time for what he called "radical empathy."

Cancer Support Community Rochester has evolved over the past several decades as it delivers high-quality programs and support services to those affected by cancer.
Established in 1959, the agency was originally named Cancer Action. In 2000, the agency was re-branded as Gilda’s Club Rochester, in honor of the famed comedienne who died of cancer in 1989. The objective was to create an even more informed and healthier population. This collaboration with a national network of cancer support organizations enabled us to offer an even wider variety of programs, including much-needed social and emotional support to those living with cancer and their family members.
Today, our newly-named (as of October 2021) Cancer Support Community serves over 5,000 people annually. Gilda’s spirit lives on as members both give and receive support and encouragement through our unique programs and events. We offer over 1,000 free programs each year to those whose lives have been impacted by cancer.
Each of the 50 Cancer Support Community affiliates across the country, including Cancer Support Community Rochester, maintains individual not-for-profit status, which assures that 100% of your donations stay right here in the Rochester community.

- Two keys to the city were presented by Mayor Quill connected with the Kate and Harry Freeman International Underground Railroad Month Proclamation. The first was to Pastor Ted Freeman, Jr. Second was to National park Service Ranger Kim Szewczyk. Ranger Szewczyk is retiring at the end of the year.
- 2 public hearings were held. The first was for the Restore NY Communities Initiatives Grant Application for 22 E. Genesee Street. The second was for the city of Auburn Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) 2022 Program Year Amendment. Because no contractors are available to start work on the Casey Park skate park this year, and CDBG funds must be spent in the year they are allocated, that portion of this year's grant will be used for sidewalk repair.

In this episode, we talk with Geneva Town Supervisor Mark Venuti and get a recap of this week's Town Board meeting.
- The Supervisor has submitted his proposed budget to the Town Board. A special meeting must be held to schedule a public hearing at the board's October 11 meeting.
- There will be a 3% increase in town water rates, primarily due to the increased cost of chlorine and other chemicals used to treat the water.
- A resident wrote a letter to the board questioning why certain town fees are imposed.
- There will be a trail work day on September 25 at the Kashong Conservation Area. Volunteers are welcome. The town is considering improvements at Kashong including picnic tables and an osprey nest. The town may also sell Kashong t-shirts as a fundraiser.
- The town has been chosen to work with the Cornell Design Connect program next spring. Students provide municipalities with low-cost advice in their areas of expertise and gain real-world experience.
- The county is holding a mattress recycling day in Geneva and Canandaigua on September 24.
- The county has installed signage at the town recycling center to make it clearer what materials should be put in which bins.
- The fix-it clinic and free stuff day were rained out and rescheduled for this Sunday.
- NYSEG has estimated it will cost about $65,000 to install two electric vehicle charging stations at the Town Hall. NYSEG will cover $60,000 of that cost.

- An update on the canned food challenge between the Sheriff's Department and Auburn police and Auburn Community Hospital. The food will be donated at this weekend's Tomatofest in au.
- On October 13 the Sheriff will be joining numerous Sheriffs from across the state in a friendly competition at Watkins Glen Raceway to raise money for our Sheriff’s Summer Camp for kids on Keuka Lake.
- School is in session. With this comes concerns related to school bus safety, speeding in school zones, and pedestrian safety.
- We continue to see a significant increase in driving while intoxicated or impaired offenses – alcohol/drugs as well as substance abuse in our community.
- Fentanyl continues to be a leading cause of overdose death and counterfeit pills containing fentanyl are becoming readily available across the country and are making their way into our community. One pill can be fatal.
- On Saturday, September 3 Acting Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome – Antonacci and the Sheriff held a public safety community outreach event in Fair Haven. We met with community members to discuss public safety issues. Nothing major of concern – primarily traffic and parking concerns.
- The population within our jail has increased significantly over the past two months. Nearly 160 inmates in our jail currently.

In this episode, we talk with Spike Herzig with the Foundation for the Geneva Public Library.
The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the library. It’s raised nearly $200,000 over the year for library programs and materials. If you have books to donate, call the library and you can make arrangements to have your books picked up.
The sale is from Friday, September 30 to Friday, October 7 in the Community Room at the library. Prices get lower as the sale progresses. On Sunday, October 2, everyone who comes in gets a free book, no purchase necessary.

In this episode, we talk with Gilda Brower, who’s been involved with the CNY Tomatofest in Auburn for 25 of its 37 years.
This year's event is set for Saturday, September 10 in Auburn. Tomatofest raises money and collects food donations for ten food pantries in Cayuga County.
The event includes family and children's activities, music and dance, craft vendors, and displays by local non-profit groups. Onondaga Coach is sponsoring a raffle. The first prize is a "steamboats and stallions" six-day tour of Kentucky. Admission to Tomatofest is free.
Saturday night, Auburn Public Theater is hosting "CNY Rising Stars," featuring three groups of young musicians from the area, Glass Image, Continuum, and Sydney Irving and the Mojo.
We discussed the challenges of feeding the hungry in Cayuga County, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year's canned food challenge between the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department and Auburn Community Hospital.

· The Auburn Fire Department applied for the FY2021 Assistance to Firefighters Grant for the purchase of new emergency portable radios. The grant has been awarded $219,122.72 in Federal funding for the project. This amount, along with the City’s 10% match of $21,912.25, brings the project total to $241,035.00. This was the full amount the Fire Department requested.
· Update on the 2022 Annual Road Improvement Program from City Engineer Bill Lupien.

Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua, in partnership with Bristol Mountain, will hold its first-ever Bike Rodeo on Sunday, August 28 from 1 to 4 pm at Bristol Mountain, 5662 Route 64 in Canandaigua!
The free event is designed for children who are entering pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and will feature equipment safety checks, basic bicycle safety skills, music and bike decorating. All event participants will be entered to win a bike. A parade will take place at the end of the event where children will compete for the coveted prize of best bike decorations. Food and drink will be available for purchase. There is no charge to participate in the Bike Rodeo.
There will be no formal bike riding training – participants are expected to be able to maneuver their bikes on their own.

- The town will work with Blueprint Geneva and Growing Cycle, LLC to expand its curbside composting program.
- The town amended its site plan code concerning the placement of trees in residential subdivisions.
- The cost of upgrades to the city's Marsh Creek pump station has gone up. The town has American Rescue Plan Act funds to help pay its one-half share of the cost. The town will also work with the city of Geneva and the town of Waterloo on an expansion of the town's wastewater treatment plant made necessary by increased development.
- The town will work with HeatSmart Monroe-FLX to provide energy audits and other ways for residents to save on their energy costs. In so doing, the town will get points toward its Clean Energy Community status with NYSERDA.
- The town has submitted a Community Development Block Grant application on behalf of Real Eats, which has exceeded its employment goals to be eligible to receive the grant.
- The town board passed a resolution in memory of George Smith, who recently passed away. Smith served the town in several capacities over the years.
- The town will submit a grant application for a two-bay electric vehicle charging station at the town hall as soon as NYSEG makes a site visit. The town plans to purchase an electric vehicle for the code enforcement officer.
- Senior cleanout day will be Thursday, September 8. Fix-it day and free stuff day will take place on Sunday, September 11.

We talked about her business background as an HR consultant and owner of Divine Coverings. We talked about the advantages of co-working for new businesses, both having an office infrastructure, and having other people to share ideas and challenges. She told me why it's important for her to be located on a busy street in the heart of downtown.
We discussed her many years of mentoring young people. Melody started the Beverly L. Smith Empowerment Initiative, named after her mother, to give young women a chance to further their educations.
We also talked about the racial attitudes of young people in light of the events and protests of the last few years.

In this episode, we talked with Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.
- The Sheriff appeared before a county legislature committee to discuss adding a School Resource Officer in the Moravia School District.
- June was a busy month, with over 1,700 calls for service. We talked about the work of the 9-1-1 dispatchers who handle many of those calls.
- We discussed the Supreme Court's rejection of New York's concealed carry restrictions and the gun debate raging across the country. The Sheriff says law enforcement should have a greater voice in crafting gun laws and he says the focus should not be on restricting the rights of legal gun owners. He says very few gun crimes are committed by owners of legally registered weapons.
- We talked about the marine patrol. Four boats patrol Owasco and Cayuga Lakes and Lake Ontario, with a focus on educating boaters on safe operation.
- The department is instituting a state-mandated Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program for jail inmates with addictions.
- The department is looking to hire both part-time security officers for the County Courthouse and other county buildings and full-time Deputies. The deadline to apply for the full-time slots is August 3.
- The department will host a medication take-back event on July 27 at the Cato Fire Department from 4-6 p.m.

23 gold records, nine platinum albums, 32 Billboard chart hits, 100 million records sold, and over 21 million plays on the radio. That's the legacy of Tommy James, who will appear with the Shondells Friday, July 15 at the Vine at del Lago Resort and Casino.
In this far-ranging conversation, we discuss Tommy's start in his hometown of Niles, Michigan, how he had an accidental hit in Pittsburgh, and his record deal with Roulette Records, a mob-controlled record company that robbed him of tens of millions of dollars but gave him creative freedom as an artist he would not have gotten from any other record label.
We talked about the songwriting influences that led to rock and roll classics like "Mony Mony", "I think we're alone now", "Draggin' the line", and his move toward more psychedelic-influenced songs like "Crimson and Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion."
Tommy's songs have been covered by numerous artists over the years. In 1987, Tiffany's version of "I think we're alone now" went to number one, only to be replaced at the top of the charts by Billy Idol's version of "Mony Mony."

The Day of Caring is August 4th. Volunteer teams will fan out to as many as 20 locations in the county to do projects. United Way is soliciting both projects that need to be done and volunteers to do them. The event began last year at the suggestion of Nucor Steel.
Prior to the Day of Caring, United Way is conducting a personal care drive for hygiene and other items that will be distributed to food pantries and similar organizations throughout Cayuga County.

Summer is officially in full swing and that means plenty to do outdoors. Ted and Chris discuss the Pied-billed grebe which can be found locally including at the Montezuma Audubon Center. Chris tells us about volunteer opportunities in July which involve pulling water chestnuts out of the waterways. Water chestnuts not only clog up waterways for boaters and kayakers but also alter the habitat for local water life. Chris also lets us know about hydrilla and updates where it stands locally. When Jennifer Lake took on the role as CEO of Goodwill of the Finger Lakes -- she like many other leaders -- did not see a pandemic on the way. Few people did. However, while her role hasn't evolved a ton, the work she does every day to keep Goodwill running in the Finger Lakes region, and expanded coverage area that the district covers has been extra important amid the pandemic. Goodwill stores operate as a staple in local communities, and while the pandemic may slow down growth and expansion -- Lake remains optimistic about the organization's future.

How are schools going to function moving forward? Stephen Parker Zielinski is the superintendent of schools at South Seneca. It's a smaller, rural district, and we wanted to catch up to ask him about potential budget cuts, navigating a pandemic on limited staffing, and what some of his expectations were moving forward. When Leslie Danks Burke set out to run for New York State Senate in the 58th District she could not have imagined what this campaign would look like. Even the most-astute politicians have been thrown for a loop by the Coronavirus pandemic. Traditional campaigning has been turned into virtual town hall events -- conducted over Zoom or Skype. Door-to-door petitioning was shut down as it became clear that the Coronavirus was too much of a risk to have face-to-face contact. And now, primaries and special elections have been pushed to June. That said, there's an even greater need now for candidates to connect with voters -- to learn more about the things they're concerned about. The economy has been ground to a halt, jobless claims are in the hundreds-of-thousands in New York alone, and the healthcare system at-large was left unprepared for a crisis of this magnitude. It is truly rare for an entire economy to stop. Except that is essentially what we’ve seen in response to the Novel Coronavirus, or COVID-19. The pandemic that started in China, spread to other European countries like Italy with devastating result — is now putting an intense burden on the U.S. healthcare system. Hospitals are stressed, supplies are running low, and in an effort to stop ‘the wave’ from capsizing hospitals — Governor Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump have issued a mixed bag of guidelines and expectations.
Among those, the shuttering of all non-essential businesses for the foreseeable future. This week, we explore the reality of shutting down entire industries — and look at the prospect of small business surviving in a post-COVID world. During the conversation, Kane confirmed circulating rumors that the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Grand Council has decided to call-out for an estimated 30 to 40 Onondaga Nation men to descend upon Seneca Falls in the aftermath of the violent brawl last Saturday.
With possibly even more on the way from Mohawk communities in Canada, the governing body of the Grand Council comprising of 50 chiefs has sought to mobilize men to reach Cayuga Nation territory.

What does the Finger Lakes Land Trust do? That's a question the newsroom has gotten a number of times over the years. This week a conversation with Andy Zepp. He's the executive director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust, who works as a conservation advocate in the region. The Land Trust was founded in 1989 to protect forests, farmlands, gorges, and shorelines in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It has grown to save more than 23,576 acres across the state by creating public nature preserves, and helping landowners to conserve their properties.

Earlier this month it was announced that around $30,000 had been secured in funding through Ontario County Economic Development for Port 100, a co-working space in downtown Geneva, which had seen its public funding disappear unceremoniously after a decision by last year's City Council. Maureen Ballatori, who runs the facility, as well as her own marketing agency out of the co-work space is going to be in-studio discussing the changes, and what 2020 has in store for one of Geneva's most-exciting ventures.

Last month Ryan and Tracey Wallace outlined plans for a $20 million project in the town of Geneva. It would be placed on Carter Road, on property owned by the Wallace's, and would account for some- $20 million worth of new investment at the site. The project would be another solar village, much like the one in downtown Geneva, and according to Ryan, is exciting because it would produce as much energy as it uses.

Her goal has been to inspire other people, and this past fall - she had the opportunity to showcase the best-of-the-best in leadership qualities. "I wanted to create the knowledge-base and use my experience to help others," she explained in that interview. "There are so many things I experienced, and getting to share that now with others is so rewarding."

In Geneva, The Trinity Episcopal Church on South Main Street is the site of that continued debate. Developer Mark McGroarty has gained support and approvals from the City, mostly-clearing way for a development at the Trinity site, which has deep history in the city itself. He was in-studio this week alongside Murray Heaton, a local attorney with a practice in Geneva; as well as Major General Bruce Tuxill, a ranking member of the congregation, which despite being smaller - still has a voice in the future of the church. McGroarty, Tuxill, and Heaton support the proposed redevelopment. While the development team still has a couple more hurdles to clear - they are hopeful that work can begin in 2020 to bring new life to the Trinity Church. The site was announced this week as one of the 'Five to Revive' by the Landmark Society of Western New York. Each year the organization selects historic sites that it views as favorable for their support and redevelopment.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Small Business Administration are two federally funded agencies that work hard to improve quality of life in rural communities. What many people may not realize, though, is that these agencies are not nearly as one-dimensional as some may believe. Richard Mayfield, who serves as State Director for Regional Development with the USDA returned to the FingerLakes1.com Studio with Steve Bulger, Regional Administrator for the SBA. Bulger oversees efforts in several states, including New York. The duo talked about programs available individually, as well as programs that both agencies work together on. Earlier this month the news and newspaper industry was rocked by the headlines that Gannett and GateHouse would be joining forces in a merger of epic proportions. The $1.4 billion deal clears way for what New Media CEO Mike Reed says will be better, stronger journalism. That said, not everyone takes the merger as a sign of 'good times'. Rather, some view more merger prospects as a net-negative for news products across the board, and those who work in the industry.

Scott Johnson is running for Town Supervisor in Sodus. The lifelong resident and businessman says he's working to bring positive changes to Sodus and Wayne County. Among motivating factors for his candidacy was the flooding along Lake Ontario, New York's lackluster efforts to address this, and a desire to improve community assets and improve Sodus' position in Wayne County as a whole. Johnson says there is a lot to be optimistic about, and this week he was in-studio discussing the things he wants to see continue moving forward in 2020 if elected this fall.

Randy Walker is not new to politics. He's served on the local school board, which was an important experience for him; and also served on the Richmond Town Board for several years recently. Now though, he sets his sights on the job of Town Supervisor. As he runs, the focus of his campaign is on long-term planning and spending. He says it's something that the Town Board has lacked; and now the State Comptroller's Office has weighed in, giving guidance on how much should be spent, and how much should be saved. Walker discusses his philosophy of governing, as well as politics in a small community that is driven by a shrinking population. He also discusses the plentiful natural resources that the Town possesses; and the unique opportunity to drive an expansion in the area of recreation.

David Hayes attributes his desire for openness and communication as primary drivers for his candidacy. Hayes is a Republican, and defeated incumbent David Kaiser in June's primary contest. It’s fair to say that the Finger Lakes Region benefits from a stable, advancing wine industry. That’s exactly what the New York Wine Industry Association is aiming to accomplish. The not for profit advocates for stability and advancement of the wine industry in New York through advocacy and public education. It’s the only association of wine and grape professionals across the state, which focuses on informing, promoting, representing and defending the diverse interests of New York’s wine industry.

The United States Department of Veteran Affairs, or VA, tracks a lot of data. It's a massive entity, serving over 18 million across the country. With sprawling services available - providing access to anyone would be challenging. That said, providing services to those in rural communities, which the VA estimates is somewhere around 4.7 million vets, is an even bigger challenge. Vets choose to live in rural communities for a variety of reasons. However, providing services in those communities is still vital. This week, Dr. Marek Kopacz and Kelly Mohrman of the VA Health System are in-studio discussing the work being done in form of outreach; and research to better serve vets across the board.

The Fingerlakes Beard Bros have a simple philosophy: Provide the best products - for guys in the Finger Lakes to make the most of their beards. Dustin Bovard and William Hanvey set out on this journey a relatively short time ago. The duo have navigated an emerging marketplace that's dominated by some big brands. Their products are already available in select retail environments - but most of their sales come online at this point. Bovard said the reception from the community has been incredible thus far. "It's been really overwhelming - in a good way," Bovard explained during a chat inside the FingerLakes1.com Studio. "The community - friends, family, acquaintances, and even strangers - are buying into our products because they're affordable and high-quality."

One of the easiest and fastest ways to improve the community is through family. The Fatherhood Connection, founded by Reggie Cox, has spent years connecting fathers with the skills they need to be proactive, strong parents in a variety of environments. Reggie says that the basis for the faith-based effort is 'availability'. Being available, as he proudly said during a recent appearance on Inside the FLX, has a profound impact, and makes a big difference on that child's life. He says the research backs it up, too. The aim of the Fatherhood Connection is to help fathers become the parental figures their children need them to be. Reggie Cox was joined by Tracy VanVleck, Commissioner of Human Services; and Don Black, a mentor within the program, who has been an advocate for The Fatherhood Connection, who helped bring it to Seneca County.

Christopher Folk says his unique experiences make him the ideal candidate for Seneca County District Attorney. With background in the tech space, plenty of management experience, and time spent in local courts as Waterloo Town Judge - Folk believes one of the keys to being a strong District Attorney is understanding how to grow and become better in the position. That means finding efficiencies within the office, developing better procedures, and of course, prosecuting cases. The local attorney from Waterloo was in-studio this week discussing his platform, looking ahead to a primary, which will be held on June 26th.

The State of New Jersey recently made headlines when the state's high school sports governing body announced major changes to the way football would be handled moving forward.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association passed a bill that reduces in-season full-contact limits from 90 minutes per week to 15 minutes and preseason full-contact hours from unlimited to six.
"The image of the 'rub some dirt on it' football coach is really one of the past," said Chuck Klaus, former president and current board member of the NJSIAA executive committee. "They want their kids to succeed, they want them to do well, but ultimately they want them healthy and safe."
Reaction has been swift across the country on this issue. While some believe that it's in the best interest of student athletes - others believe its weakening those students. We've attached some reaction to the bill's passage at the bottom of this story.

In 2018, the CDC produced new, shocking data that showed a 30 percent increase in suicide rates over the last two decades. That increase prompted a lot of discussion, dialogue, and ideas about what could be done differently to improve mental health treatment, services available, and remove stigma. Those efforts are now being realized in a number of unique, exciting ways in Seneca County.
