In this episode, I talk to Marguerite deCourcelle -- known online mostly as Coin Artist -- the CEO and founder of Blockade Games. Blockade Games is behind Neon District, Plasma Bears, and Pineapple Arcade. Neon District is their flagship game -- a blockchain-based RPG that with a multi-phased release.
Before we get to all things Blockade, I talk to Marguerite about her art, and crypto puzzles, where she has gotten a lot of attention. Her most popular piece, TORCHED H34R7S, is up now for auction both as an NFT (non-fungible token) and a physical painting. The puzzle was solved in 2018, with a price of 5 bitcoin.

A great Vice article digs more into the story of the person who solved the puzzle after three years.

In this episode, I talk to Wes Pryor, of Liquid Malta. Wes's business provides market making services in the cryptocurrency space, primarily for lower liquidity small cap altcoins, including new listings. They have worked a lot on projects with initial distributions through decentralized exchanges like IDEX. We talked about how those opportunities come about, how they work practically, and discuss a lot of risks in the market.
The idea of market making brand new listings, and going into partnership agreements with exchanges and coin teams, is fascinating to me. Mostly because it sounds a bit scary. Wes is a smart investor and trader and he helps break down exactly what kinds of risks there are, what the practice requires, and how they do what they do.

In this episode, I talk to Edward Woodford, the CEO and co-founder of Seed CX. Seed CX is a platform for institutional investors to trade crypto, with up around 3x margin. We discuss the challenges building a product for institutions, for acquiring proper licensing in the United States, and a bunch of stuff around building a quality exchange business and trading experience.
SeedCX interests me for a couple reasons. For one, collateral is very flexible and can be in bitcoin or multiple forms of fiat. Secondarily, taker fees are only 8 basis fees and maker fees are 0. Thirdly, there is a nightly settlement process so each customer has their own wallets, while trading is on their centralized platform.
I enjoyed this chat with Edward, learning how they have built things, and the challenges they face -- particularly the competition with more "cowboy" exchanges.

We talk about the merits of Proof of Burn, DAOs, and potential for DestroyerDAO. It seems like they are looking for traction based off of the meme around burning "shitcoins" but really have a larger aim in helping legitimate projects. I'm really interested for several reasons. For one, to see if a DAO can work. Second, to see if it can establish the desired incentives to encourage people to actually burn tokens from one project in receipt of DestroyerDAO tokens -- when the only stated purpose of those tokens is to have a say in the community.

Bob Reid is the former GM of BitTorrent and he's been involved in crypto for quite some time as well. He's now undertaking a highly ambitious project with Everest -- an all encompassing crypto project that includes micro-payments, record keeping, micro finance, identification, and more.
As you'll hear in the interview, I call it EverID. They have since rebranded to Everest since it's beyond the ID scope. It's a multi token model that has what I believe to be a unique approach for garnering adoption.

Clay Collins is the CEO of Nomics, a company he's building to be the data layer for crypto. They currently maintain an API will historical and real time price data on thousands of crypto projects from dozens of markets, going back to their inception.
The Nomics API is in use on their own website, nomics.com, which is essentially designed as a competitor to Coin Market Cap.
I have been chatting with Clay about being a user of their API and have been really impressed with the API (including all that they offer for free) and what his goals are for this project. I asked him to come on to discuss Nomics, but also more.
He hosts a podcast called Flippening that is well worth listening to. It is a great podcast and well produced. They recently did a three part series on security tokens that is a must listen.
Clay has been an entrepreneur for a long time, and already grew one startup into a a profitable and successful mid-size business --in Lead Pages. I believe that he has a good voice for the crypto ecosystem and that you'll enjoy hearing this interview.

Lowstrife is one of the most talented traders I know, and perhaps the best scalper I've ever seen. He quite literally takes thousands of (mostly low timeframe) trades per year. He watches the charts, the orderbooks, and goes in for the trade with great precision.

Nik has a fascinating story to tell of trading crypto starting with just a couple hundred dollars, not once but twice. He has participated in the crypto markets of 2014-2016 and again in 2017-2018 with a break in the middle. Both times he started with very little and turned it into real money.
He's even written a book that's part personal story and part guide to navigating the land of alt coins. He approaches markets differently than a lot of technical traders and I think you'll enjoy hearing his stories, and reading his book.

We have discussed DEXs (decentralized exchanges) many times on this show, and in this episode I'm happy to have a guest on who is building one. John Piotrowski is the CEO of The Ocean -- a decentralized exchange that's near launch, which they've built as a relayer on top of the 0x protocol.
I went far deeper with John than I anticipated I would. We dug into what makes a dex a dex, and how they are approaching the ecosystem differently than other participants. For one, they are a hybrid model with off-chain order books. John believes deeply in the importance of deep liquidity on a proper order book system. His past is working at Goldman Sachs and elsewhere, directly with their trading operations. He's aiming to bring institutional level liquidity to The Ocean, something that others have not been able to do.
By taking token custodianship out of the equation, but also embracing KYC/AML and other regulatory matters, they believe it gives them an edge in this emerging market.
The Ocean does have a token element, but it will be a free airdop with a rewards-only model for early adopters. There's no ICO, and even their VC investors do not have a token allocation as part of the investment.

In this episode of Ledger Cast, we offer up a compilation of three interviews Derek did in-person while at Consensus. All three are available independently on our YouTube channel as well.
We ended up digging more into security tokens and stable coins than I expected at the beginning of the show, but I think both are themes we'll see the rest of 2018 and into 2019. We also discussed EOS and their mainnet launch, along with an effort to incentivize dApp development through a massive fund, and how that compares to the dominance in the landscape through Ethereum.
Interview #1 with Fetch.ai Fetch is a project aiming to tackle decentralized ledger technology at an enormous scale -- to handle billions (or more) of agents making transactions, which they're approaching with a new type of ledger technology and what they call "Useful Proof of Work". Fetch will be a token and their private test net is already up and running. They're aiming for a summer release of their public test net.
Toby Simpson is the CTO and co-founder of Fetch, which is a self-funded project to date. He produced the Creatures game series in the 90s and was an original member of the AI company DeepMind (acquired by Google for ~$500m in 2014).
Interview #2 with Havven In this interview, Derek Waltchack interviews Kain Warwick of Havven -- one of the organizations tackling the stable coin market. There are generally three approaches to stable coins, and in this interview, Derek discusses with Kain how they are approaching the issue of establishing stability using multiple tokens. Creating a unit of account is hard for bitcoin as it is so volatile. At its basis, stability and scalability is what's the challenge for all of these projects.
Interview #3 with Platin Platin is a platform designed to put proof of location on the blockchain. They proclaim several uses cases from proximity-based gamification to humanitarian relive using crypto-based airdrops. Derek interviewed Allon Mason and Dr. Lionel Wolberger -- two of the co-founders of the Platin project.

In this episode of Ledger Cast, Derek and I interview Paul Walsh, the CEO of MetaCert, and the head of the MetaCert Protocol. MetaCert is creating the MetaCert Protocol to bring their online trust and reputation platform to the blockchain. They see many benefits for taking centralized information and decentralizing it, and they are creating the MetaCert Protocol to address that.
In this conversation, we discuss the use case for establishing trust for online links, the products MetaCert currently offers, and the benefits of the MetaCert Protocol.

MetaCert offers several products right now on their centralized platform. They have a browser extension that adds reputation scores to website URLs. They also have additions for messaging apps like Slack and Telegram to help organizations prevent scammy URLs from infiltrating their communities. They see the next big battleground for online security as taking place in large part within chat apps; the crypto community is certainly familiar with that threat.
The blockchain allows us to shift our centralized database to a decentralized registry. The Protocol features built-in game mechanics, rewarding participants with Tokens for submitting and validating the categorization of URIs. This incentivized system is the heart of the Protocol. In addition to rewarding participants, the Token will help mitigate the risk of bad actors trying to spoil the quality of the registry.
MetaCert's network can be integrated at most layers of the system: hardware (like your network router), software like a messaging app, or the end user via a browser extension. They currently collect and license their reputation scores to other centralized entities, and they see value in creating a broadly used decentralized reputation blockchain. We discuss with Paul some of the potential issues we see with MetaCert as a distributed protocol, and other questions someone would have for a centralized company creating a decentralized protocol. And at the end of the interview, we wrap up with our own thoughts on MetaCert.
MetaCert has been around since 2011 and Paul is an experienced entrepreneur, with a long history working on the web and in the security realm. We were both impressed with what they are doing and what they're building.
MetaCert ICO The MetaCert ICO details aren't out yet, but most of the information is near ready and pending the completion of legal review. They are seeking to raise $40 million, including in a private sale. They have thus far received a lot of interest. There's no discount or bonus for the private sale, but it allows some investors to have a larger allocation of tokens for the protocol.
Paul said that 75% of the team tokens are going to be locked up and vested over a three year period; he notes he's skeptical of some of the short lockup periods of other ICOs.
Users of Cryptonite will receive tokens as users. Once the network launches, users can pay to use the extension with tokens, but also can earn tokens by participating in the network by reporting websites and establishing online reputations for websites.
The MetaCert Protocol will operate on the Ethereum blockchain.

In this episode of Ledger Cast, I interview Alex Sterk, the community manager of the Ubiq project and CEO of Ubiq Technologies.

Ubiq is built on the Ethereum Virtual Machine and is pitched as an alternative for building dApps to Ethereum itself. It's a proof of work coin, primarily mined on GPUs. They are currently in the window for an airdrop for the Escher token, which is primarily to be used for governance purposes. We discuss this, as well as other fundamental concepts around the Ubiq cryptocurrency and ecosystem.
This interview was recorded a couple of weeks ago, and since then the Escher airdrop has moved from a test phase to a live phase, so you can claim it now. They have articles on their website showing you how to do so.

In this episode of Ledger Cast, Derek and I interview Ivan Poon, Henry Chua, and Jack Yeu from Switcheo. Switcheo recently concluded an ICO to raise funds for their Decentralized Exchange project, which has just launched.
Switcheo is an underdog team in the race to be the top Neo DEX, and they beat the competition to launch. If you picture is like the Ethereum landscape, you can imagine the advantage. As new tokens launch on the network, DEXes are often the only place for early liquidity.
Switcheo doesn't intend to stop with Neo. They are building the DEX in a way so that they can build for Neo, Qtum, and other networks, and the end goal is to be a multi-chain decentralized exchange. But they are starting with Neo and the NEP-5 token mechanism.
This interview was recorded a few weeks ago, and a couple weeks before they distributed tokens from their ICO. Please forgive us if the audio quality is a challenge; we tried to process it as well as we could, and cut any gaps due to the distance between us on the call. I think it's manageable.

In this episode of Ledger Cast, Josh and I talk about the current state of the bitcoin market, including the recent correction, and where we think it's going from here. We also discuss news of the week that helped spur the largest part of the dump, and other stuff we are considering during this time.
Both Josh and I believe that the bitcoin market has found a relative bottom in the low $9,000s. Based on historical corrections, it has been along the same percentage, a little over 50%, as past corrections that ranged from 30% to 60% while maintaining the bull market.
Also, the 141 day moving average -- which Josh found arbitrarily on the bitcoin growth curve, was touched similarly to past corrections.
And you can also see how price has been using the 50/100/200 moving averages for support and resistance.
And the overview the market using the Ichimoku Cloud system with doubled settings, including an intraday edge-to-edge move, and break below the cloud.
That has led into a long legged doji candle that is a potential sign of reversal.
In the low timeframes, you can further see a steep correction that's leading into a possible Adam & Eve doubled bottom, or may not leave the horizontal channel -- it's hard to tell yet. I've combined this with Fibonacci retracement levels to show possible areas of support and resistance.
We discuss the bitcoin price action in addition to several other things.

News of the week Rootstock launched their smart contract platform on a main net on January 5th, after running a test net for months. Here's a good overview of what Rootstock is as well. Nick's origin story Nick learned about Bitcoin in 2011 and bought his first bitcoin in 2012 near the top of the cycle that year, when he became interested in additional uses for blockchain through smart contracts -- though smart contracts were hardly a concept at the time. He bought some in part to get, "skin in the game," which forced him to increase his interest and curiosity about the technology, and he advises the same for others looking to learn about bitcoin and blockchain.
Nick got involved early, and as much as possible tried to not spend earnings he made in crypto, and instead attempted to live as cheaply as possible and re-invest all gains back into the ecosystem. He's been full time almost six years, having quit his job soon after he got involved.
The ecosystem has changed a great deal since then, especially in terms of global market cap, growth trends, and liquidity improvements. Nick noted how traditional economists have ignored network effects when trying to analyze possible value of the ecosystem.

Smart contracts Smart contracts bring a whole new world to bitcoin and the blockchain. There are many ideas and platforms that promise a bright future for putting many things on a blockchain -- but the idea and the reality can be quite different. Nick and I talked about what smart contracts are, how they will look in the next five years, and where we are now with them -- a very early beta and proof of concept.
When you talk about smart contracts, most people think first of Ethereum, with good reason. And there are dozens or even hundreds of alt coins attempting to improve or replace Ethereum. They are attempting to do something different in terms of base language, scalability, governance, centralization, or other matters.
Nick thinks we'll eventually see network effects that bring users to a single standard that is clearly superior -- making the vast majority of other options less valuable. His strategy for trading these is two fold: short term and long term.
In terms of long term bets, his strategy is to, "pepper everything," and plan that one will moonshot and pay for all the ones that didn't do well. And when he talks about long term, it is probably different than most people are thinking -- looking at multi-week moves at least. The speed of the market also makes it a big time saver to bet long term rather than short term -- because to bet short term you're going to have to spend a lot of time and energy and may still lose.
Nick says that the buy and hold strategy for coins with good fundamentals is typically a better strategy -- but it does depend on having quality teams and entries that relatively early.
Nick's tests for an investment:
- Is there a working product?
- Is there a good team that's easy to access? He gives bonus points if they are not anonymous.
- Coin supply and distribution, lock-up periods, and other governance mechanisms.
- Does the idea need a blockchain, or is it being squeezed in?

In this episode of Ledger Cast, Josh and I talk about pricing alt coins relative to the dollar versus relative to bitcoin. This is a common question amongst new investors, and getting your head around pricing an alt coin versus bitcoin can be a challenge.
Many investors say they don't believe in charting versus the dollar at all. While I believe it's important to relate profits relative to bitcoin, USD charts can be valuable. In this episode, we talk about this in depth, and I'll also attempt to describe it here, including some visuals.
In addition to discussing pricing in bitcoin versus the dollar, we also discuss general portfolio strategies, when to be in alts versus bitcoin, and when we decide to go to fiat (cash). We also answer some listener questions.
Thinking about gains in terms of bitcoin When you buy bitcoin for some price -- say $10,000 -- if it doubles in price, it's very clear what you made. Buying alt coins is more dynamic. When you buy another coin, it is less clear, if your goal is to make more bitcoin. Why would your goal be to make more bitcoin? Well, if you could just hold bitcoin and do nothing, and make more USD than trading alts, why would you trade alts? So, if you trade an alt, there are two possible benefits:
- Diversity in your portfolio (maybe flawed)
- To make more bitcoin
The reason investing in other coins for the purpose of diversification may often be flawed is simple: bitcoin going down makes everything go down relative to the dollar, usually. However, trading in alt coins can still allow you to make more bitcoin when bitcoin is either down or (preferably) sideways. Trading alt coins rather than holding bitcoin has potential failures:
- Alt coin can not keep pace of growth with bitcoin (go down versus bitcoin)
- It takes attention, time, and energy (it's stressful)
- You don't get bitcoin fork "dividends", if not holding bitcoin, which has been valued at something like 30% this year
- You pay fees for trading
- You may be liable for taxes due to trade activity triggering tax events
So you have a lot of potential downfalls trading alt coins. However, trading alts is the most potentially lucrative way to increase your bitcoin, and therefore also your dollar balance of your portfolio. An example trade to make more bitcoin
Let's say you bought Litecoin for $25, and it was equivalent to .01 bitcoin at the time. If you sell it for $50, you made 100%, but what if it's still only .01 bitcoin? Or what if it is now less than that? You now have less relative-to-bitcoin value even though you doubled your money. If that same dollar amount was just in bitcoin, you would have more dollars and you never had to make a trade.
It is also possible to buy Litecoin for $100 and it be cheaper than when it was $50. So, if you bought Litecoin recently, it was as low as .00561, yet was $96 at the time. It is so much cheaper relative to bitcoin because in the time that Litecoin had doubled, Bitcoin had nearly gone 5x in value.
Taking advantage of market cycles You can see in the picture above that Litecoin has been its current bitcoin relative price several times this year, yet it's at an all time high versus the dollar. So even though it seems you have have done well, you've only broken even versus bitcoin for much of the year. So, it's always important to know what both your bitcoin relative price is, and your USD price is. The way to take advantage of this Litecoin trade would have been to buy it when it was in the .01 range and sell it in the .02 range. It made that swing six or seven times in 2017, and could've been exploited to gain more bitcoin -- which would allow you to both increase your bitcoin and then of course your dollar value.
Trading relative to bitcoin (if successful), you are able to take advantage of these market cycles relative to bitcoin.
Of course every alt has these cycles, and they make look different. Another we discussed in the show was Monero, due to its very clear cycles. Again in this example, as you can see with the btc relative chart with the orange channel, you could swing trade the market cycles to gain more bitcoin.
Not all coins look like this -- Ethereum shows another pattern that's common, where after a massive run, it spent months consolidating versus the dollar, and because Bitcoin was doing very well, it was losing value versus Bitcoin quickly.
In this Ethereum example, the beginning of June was the last time you wanted to hold it, because Bitcoin performed better going forward while Ethereum consolidates versus the dollar.
USD indicators for impulsion One of the most useful ways I've found to use dollar charts is to discover pending opportunities for impulsion. The Ethereum example above is a perfectly fine example. In this scenario, you wouldn't want to hold it during that consolidation period versus the dollar. But as the ascending triangle is nearing an end, it's getting close to a decision point to leave consolidation and make a larger move against bitcoin. Because an ascending triangle is a classically bullish chart pattern, the bet to make would be to own Ethereum either before it breaks out to get the full move, or to buy the breakout.
The time frame gearing up to the large move is preparing for an impulsive moment in the chart. Using dollar charts in this way can help us predict when a coin may outpace bitcoin, and allow us to make more bitcoin.
This applies to just about any coin in my experience. Another favorite example of mine is Siacoin recently.
In the Siacoin US dollar chart, the two circles were potential moments of impulsion: the first an exit from the Ichimoku Cloud, and the second as a breach of the prior all time high. These look much different on the bitcoin chart.
On the bitcoin chart, the first timeframe looked like a mega bottom. It's a very different story from the dollar version, which had already shown significant recovery. The dollar chart, in my mind, provided a hint toward further recovery, showing signs of bullishness. Yet in crypto, these bottomed out views often look "bullish" to traders for market cycle reasons, while technically they are highly bearish.
The second circle in the bitcoin chart looks much like the first example in the dollar chart: sign of a promising recovery. Yet by this time with the dollar chart, Sia was in fact making a new all time high. But you can see it has a way to go versus bitcoin to achieve an all time high -- because since Siacoin last made an all time high relative to bitcoin, bitcoin's price had increased drastically -- making it even more difficult for Siacoin to outpace it.
High velocity bitcoin and alt coin vs bitcoin correlation There is a common joke in crypto that when bitcoin pumps, alt coins dump, and when bitcoin dumps, alt coins dump. This has often been true, making the joke more painful for your typical alt coin trader. I relate this to the velocity of bitcoin price action.
I broadly believe alt coin price is inversely correlated to bitcoin velocity more than bitcoin price -- and many other people do too; I didn't invent this, but I've tried to verbalize it my own way. At times when bitcoin is mostly sideways, or less volatile, it's possible for alts to outpace bitcoin because trader's are more likely to take money out of bitcoin and send it to alt coins.
When bitcoin is moving very fast, it will be very difficult for alt coins to keep up. Though there are some magical times when bitcoin and alts have both pumped together -- but it has historically included massive influxes of new money distributing to both bitcoin and the rest of the crypto ecosystem.

Target, Sir? (Primary topic on picking buy and sell targets) If you skip to minute 33, we start talking about technical analysis and how we choose buy or sell targets.
Pattern analysis Generally, Josh trades using pattern analysis (his video on this). An example we used for pattern analysis is Ethereum’s multi-month ascending triangle on the high timeframe, and a flag on the lower timeframe. The measured move of this triangle was around $800, which was already achieved.
Bollinger Bands Triggers are used in addition to pattern analysis. In the case of the Ethereum consolidation, Bolinger bands (video) could provide insight to measure volatility. As the bands tighten, the likelihood of a volatile move increases. In conjunction with the pattern, it allows you to predict possible price action.
Ichimoku Cloud The Ichimoku cloud gives us a visual snapshot of the trend, with a lot of information. Again using our Ethereum example, the Ichimoku cloud versus the dollar was signaling bullishness prior to the ascending triangle breakout.
An entry on this example could’ve been made at several levels:
- An agressive entry on the bottom diagonal of the triangle
- Buy the breakout of the Bollinger bands, or the triangle
- Buy the retest of the triangle top
Comparing USD versus BTC pricing We can spend more time on this, but this example shows a Ethereum price comparison versus the dollar. However, the bitcoin relative price is also important. Josh and I both wish to have more bitcoin, so if Ethereum isn’t outpacing Bitcoin, then it’s better to hold Bitcoin.
So the ideal here is to let Ethereum consolidate as much as possible while not in, and buy as the biggest portion of the move is about to happen, so that it can outpace Bitcoin’s bullishness.
Getting this exactly right could be very difficult. However, both of us think it is worth looking at both the USD and BTC pairs for coins. When the charts align, it presents the most opportunity.
Market cycles Market cycles are one of the most important considerations when buying alt coins. Josh gave the example of Doge and how it has these huge pumps relative to Bitcoin. Here’s an example of Doge versus Bitcoin.
Note how the Doge/BTC chart is drastically different than the one versus the dollar. Despite Doge versus the dollar being near an all time high, it has failed to keep pace with Bitcoin. Yet, the bitcoin pair is now in the buy zone again, and therefore may present another market cycle opportunity, and a move in the Doge dollar price.
Double bottoms / Adam & Eves everywhere Right now in alt coins, there are a lot of double bottoms, which are often presented as an Adam and Eve pattern where it’s a V and a U side by side, where the U is often a higher low than the V.
When buying an Adam and Eve, you often see a retest of the pattern break, like you see above. Targets can be the distance of the orange line (middle of two peaks) to the lowest low.
Thomas Bulkowski also notes more identification and success metrics for this pattern.
Many more patterns We spoke of some patterns but there are many, many more. Josh’s playlist on indicators is very good.
There are many ways to trade. We talked about how we tend to do things here, but there are many strategies. Another many crypto traders love is a method of bottom calling, where they try to “catch knives” if you will, and work to catch alt coins at their depths, rather than on trend confirmation.
Selling partials One thing we both do is trade in ranges. It’s going to be hard to call an exact top, so when we are selling, we both try to establish a range of possible prices where we sell. For instance, if we want to see .04 btc to sell, maybe we set sells between .035 and .06 depending on how those prices work within various indicators: moving averages, fibonacci extensions, cloud levels, or whatever else.
