Do you know how to use Microsoft One Drive? I kind of do. On Memorial Day I Zoomed with my 83 year old dad and showed him how to use this often confusing computer tool. I was surprised to experience The MORE (how I am growing to know God) in this mundane act of service. Since the Pandemic Period began nearly 100 days ago, we have seen great human suffering. While the federal gov has been generally unwilling or unable to give in meaningful ways to aleviate this suffering, neighborhoods, groups and inviduals have heroically stepped up to give. In the uprising after the lynching of George Floyd, millions have poured into streets around the world in acts of protest and agitating for change. This must be the beginning as each of us, especially me and other white people continue to learn about our racist structures and to repent and seek to change our society. Its clear to see that over the past decade or so and especially since the 2016 election, there's been an erosion of what is considered "common decency" in our society. There's a shocking indecency specifically in words used to describe others and generally what is acceptable for elected leaders to say or Tweet. I live in Ohio where our governor talks daily to the "citizens" of our state. Not far away in Wisconsin voters a few weeks ago had a stark choice - stay at home in safety or risk infection and go out to vote. Why do good people suffer? This is a foundational question that humans have asked throughout the ages. It is being asked more and more urgently during this time of pandemic. About 2600 years ago, the Israelite author of the Old Testament Book of Job asked this same question in one of the most famous narratives in history. How does Job react when all is taken from him? The element scanduim is a component of the brightest light bulbs we see in parking lots and elsewhere. At the heart of all creation is Christ who became incarnate within creation and thus became a part of all matter from the subatomic to the cosmic. Like scanduim in the light we see, Christ is present in all we see - from quarks all the way up to stars and galaxies.

I recorded this episode at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival after celebrating mass with our Bishop Robert Brennan. My heart is heavy and I'm angry too after 20 were killed by an American terrorist in El Paso yesterday and 9 murdered early this morning in Dayton - 90 minutes from here. I talked with a Northern Irish author and am struck by how this form of domestic terrorism we are facing isn't too different than what he grew up with in Belfast. Any yet I am encouraged by the refrain from Bishop Brennan's homily - We are made for better than this. God is here and ready to empower us to support life by enacting common sense gun laws. We pray for those lost and also MUST work to end this violence. There are solutions if we but have the courage to stand up and enact them.

My son and I gathered with 175 others on the evening of the Lights for Liberty action. We gathered for talk, song and prayer at the Mount Gillead, Morrow County Ohio jail where about two dozen migrants are being detained. I witnessed, from a small distance, some of those men reaching out to us from behind the windows. They are "the little ones" to whom the Hebrew prophets and Jesus himself tell us to provide special care.

There are three kinds of phosphorus - the deadly white, the rare and useless black and the red form used in matches to ignite. It is also the key element needed for plants to grow. Christ came to bring light and flame and growth to the world. And there are many forms of his followers - some who are toxic and use his name for bigotry and violence, those with a benign faith that never leaves the church building and those whose hearts are burning and ignited as they bring Christ's Love to the world.

The US Inspector General for the Dept of Homeland Security today said the migrant detention centers the US is running at the border are a "ticking time bomb" Yesterday my son and I attended two rallies asking US Representatives to immediately improve the conditions of these camps and to ultimately #closethecamps. I experienced God's presence in at least two people that I spoke with at these rallies.
