Welcome to The HealED Podcast! I'm your host, Marie-Pier, and today we have an incredible guest joining us, Jasna Robinson-Wright, an amazing registered dietitian at The Balanced Practice.
In this episode, we're diving deep into the intersections between health conditions, eating disorders, and navigating dietary restrictions without triggering disordered eating.
Jasna and I discuss the dangers of jumping straight into the most restrictive route when addressing health issues. We challenge the common belief that cutting out dairy and gluten is necessary for various health conditions.
We also explore the confusion and misinformation surrounding food and nutrition advice in the information age. With everyone feeling like experts on nutrition and readily giving advice without solid evidence, it's important to discern what's valid and what's not.
Moreover, we delve into the pervasive influence of diet culture, wellness culture, and weight bias in society. Popular diets often receive media attention and hype, despite lacking proven effects. Believing that certain foods are "bad" can lead to guilt, shame, and potentially worsening health conditions or disordered eating.
So, grab your favourite beverage, sit back, and get ready for an insightful and transformative discussion on healing, health, and intuitive eating. Let's dive right in!
Want to join Jasna's Workshop on the intersection of Diabetes and Eating Disorders? Check it out here. This workshop aims to provide guidance for individuals living with health conditions, such as diabetes, on navigating dietary restrictions without triggering an eating disorder.

In this episode of The Balanced Dietitian Podcast, we talk about SUGAR and the stress we experience around food due to societal norms and our attachment of worth to certain foods.
We challenge the concept of food/sugar addiction and review how to increase balance in our nutrition.
I believe in a balanced and consistent approach to nutrition that focuses on adding rather than restricting.
Here's whats covered in this episode:
[00:00:05] Welcome to Balanced Dietitian Podcast where science and psychology combine to empower individuals with a better relationship with food and body for a better life.
[00:03:31] Food can become tied to self-worth, leading to a hierarchical system with certain foods seen as "better" or "worse". Diet culture has now merged with wellness culture, with sugar demonized as the worst thing to consume.
[00:06:57] Dieters may attach more worth to certain foods due to deprivation, leading to heightened emotional response and dopamine release. Importance of considering psychology and morality in relation to food.
[00:11:19] Don't fear sugar, focus on health-promoting behaviors. View nutrition as addition, not restriction. Stress around food is worse than the food itself.
[00:15:14] Assess your relationship with sugar and understand nutritional needs, especially for those with sensitivities.
[00:18:49] Dopamine release not indicative of addiction; restriction triggers addiction behavior in rats.
[00:23:46] Intuitive eating balances thoughts, emotions, and intuition with food. Anti-diet doesn't mean it's a free for all with food. It's still important to strive for balance and understand how food impacts our bodies.
[00:24:44] Podcast host invites audience on instagram to share thoughts on sugar and debunk diet culture. Aims to promote a healthy relationship with food to improve lives.
Conclusion: You can eat sugar. Sugar is NOT bad. Balance OVER restriction Everyday!

Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian podcast.
Happy last day of May! How are we feeling, my friends? Today, on the podcast, we're talking about the reasons why food freedom doesn't work for you.
This is a little bit different because I believe that food freedom CAN happen for everybody. I believe that we were all born intuitive eaters and we can all heal our relationship with food for the better. You can work towards having a better relationship with food and with your body, so that you can truly feel more at peace and live the life that you want. I truly believe that, BUT sometimes food freedom doesn't work.
So, today I want us to talk about the reasons why food freedom may not be working for you, and then we can talk about some things we can do a bit differently so it CAN work for you.

Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian podcast.
I celebrated my birthday last week and I ended up taking the whole week off to celebrate! Growing up in a big household meant our house was always busy, so now that I’m a bit older, my birthday is an opportunity for me to spend the day doing things that I like, things that nurture my soul, and things that are fun and joyful; which meant getting out in nature this year. I get all of my best inspiration when I'm out in nature and connecting with myself, and I came back feeling inspired and excited to talk to you about the idea of having a Nutrition Foundation. It's something that can be a bit misunderstood when it comes to being anti-diet, so we’re diving into it on the podcast this week.

Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Balanced Dietician podcast. I’ve been feeling good the last few weeks! I always kind of forget how my mental health is impacted by winter until we get into spring again. Every spring I just feel like a different person.
It's really interesting because most folks who do the healing journey, to have a better relationship with food and their body, will experience something similar. When you have a not-so-good relationship with food, we kind of know it's not great, but we don't realize how bad it actually is until you've healed. When we can look back and just realize how things used to be, we realize how far we've actually come; pretty cool, right?
For most of us, our relationship with food wasn’t always bad. It started to get tricky we were trying to manipulate food in order to change our body. Body image is often the source of our food relationship issues.
So if we do the work to heal our relationship with food, but we don't do the body image work, it feels kind of like a bandaid solution; we're not doing the deep work that started the problem.

Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast; The place where we talk about all things, food, body, mind, and the anti-diet.
When I started to diet, I didn’t know the consequences of dieting. I didn’t know what would happen to my body, and to my mind. I didn’t know, because I was not informed properly. I was told that dieting was gonna make all my dreams come true and that I was gonna feel so good, and that's not actually what happened.
Do you know what actually happens to our bodies when you diet? Why does our body not like dieting? What can actually happen when you diet?
I believe in body autonomy. We can all do what we're meant to do and what feels best for us, but I also believe in informed decisions.
So today, I encourage you to get informed on the hidden costs of diets so that you can make the best decision for you.
In this episode, we discuss:* The PROBLEM and the SOLUTION that diet culture has created * Diets were designed as a short term solution * How diets affect our Hormones * Other bodily changes brought on by diets * Weight is the least important part of us BUT it is a part of diet culture you need to know about

Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I’m so happy that you are here with me today.
How are you doing, my friend? How are we feeling today? I was a little under the weather on this week’s podcast but I had to record this episode because it’s an important conversation!
We’ve made it to the end of April and the end of this Canadian winter. It’s starting to actually feel like spring now and slowly moving towards the summertime, which is really exciting. I know that this transition, period can often be difficult when we are healing our relationship with food and our body. There's a little bit more emphasis on bodies over the summertime, so I invite you to take a moment and just check in with yourself about how we're feeling about this new transition into summer. What thoughts do we have around food in our body as summertime is coming along?
Wherever you are in your healing journey, I invite you to check in with yourself on how we are feeling about it and join me today for a a conversation about food psychology.
In this episode, we discuss: * Nourishing our body to feel good is important but HOW we eat is equally important * How we feel about our relationship with food * Feeling disempowered in our relationship with food

How many times have you found yourself sitting on the couch, watching TV with a bag of chips and the next thing you know they’re all gone? Does the term boredom eating mean anything to you? The first thing you need to know is that there’s absolutely noting wrong with boredom eating but on today’s episode I want to talk about how we can begin to relate to it differently, understand it better, and maybe choose to do something different when those feelings arise.

I didn't post a podcast last week because, truly, I didn't want to! I know I know, the algorithm is probably upset with me BUT, I am leaning in to doing things that ONLY feel aligned and last week, it just didn't.
I have come to many realizations in the past few months regarding hustle culture... and honestly, I want to opt out. I am curious, how do you feel about it? Do you see the similarities between diet culture and hustle culture?
This week, I want to talk about the "non-negotiables" if you want a great relationship with food.

Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I am so happy you are here with me this week.
I am starting to feel a big shift in my energy now that winter is starting to come to a close. Back in November, I shared how much of a negative impact the winter months have on me as I am truly a summer person so the change in temperature is certainly welcome.
I know that this time of year can be challenging for many of us because there’s a lot of pressure to be bikini body ready. We know that in the summertime, it’s very likely that more of our body's going to be exposed which can make us feel very vulnerable and push us to want to diet for the summertime.
If you are feeling that way right now, you’re not alone and this episode is for you.
In this episode, we discuss: * [02:48] Dealing with diet culture leading up to the summer months * [06:11] The impact of wellness culture on eating disorders * [07:30] Wellness culture and diet culture * [12:05] Sneaky ways wellness culture shows up in everyday life

Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! Welcome back to the podcast. I am so happy you are here with me this week.
This week we’re running a replay of a solo episode I did a couple of years ago about 6 reasons why food freedom or healing your relationship with food has not worked in the past.
In this episode, we discuss: [02:15] Reason #1: You are still restricting
[03:21] Reason #2: You are just not eating enough
[04:32] Reason #3: You have not addressed your internalized fat phobia
[06:07] Reason #4: You are still listening to external sources to tell us what we need
[07:50] Reason #5: You are doing mindless eating
[10:33] Reason #6: You try to add more control around food

As I was preparing for this trip, something I really wanted to talk about is body changes because our bodies are made to change however we were taught and made to believe that our bodies should never change. That is extremely harmful messaging. No matter where you are on your journey, body change is hard.
In this episode, we discuss: [03:56] Body changes can be hard no matter where you are on your journey
[07:00] Looking at body changes in a neutral way

Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I hope you are doing so wonderful. It is already mid-February. Last week I got to host another workshop on emotional eating. It was so good. I love to be able to teach about emotional eating because it really bridges my love of psychology and nutrition together. I feel this is a topic that has a lot of shame and guilt around it.
One of the themes that came out a lot at the workshop that I wanted to bring on this podcast is the idea that if I know that emotional eating is not helping me why do I keep doing it? A lot of hopelessness starts to set in when we feel out of control and can not stop.
In this episode, we discuss: [03:38] If we know something doesn’t work for us, why do we continue doing it?
[04:51] Food and emotions are deeply linked
[07:28] Emotional eating is a often way we cope

Welcome back to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! Welcome, 2023! I hope you had a wonderful holiday in general and here we are in 2023. How do we feel? There are so many parts of me pulling when I am thinking about a new year. I love the new year, goal setting, reflection, and new year vibes. There is also a part of me that hates how diet culture gets involved in goal setting and the unrealistic expectations that we put on ourselves for the year.
Today I want to talk about goal setting but I want to do it differently. I really want to talk about what can be helpful and what is unhelpful and try to detach that from what we have been taught and what diet culture has taught us. A lot of us have been taught to set goals and motivate ourselves by shame.
In this episode, we discuss: [03:10] Value-aligned goal setting and experience goals
[04:12] We are NOT setting weight loss goals
[09:11] Set experience goals instead
