Recorded live at DCA in Philly.

AUDIO DISCLAIMER:
This recording was taken from an 8-track tape cartridge. I did the best that I could to clean up the fidelity. 8-tracks were known for not being the highest of quality. There are four 1 second blank spots thoughout the mix when the tracks changed.

Here's another rare DJ mixtape from 1975 that I just finished remastering! This is from the Doug Barnes reel-to-reel mixtape collection. This was a time before 12" single extended mixes, turntables with no pitch control, slip cue mixing 45's and extending short tracks by using two copies and cutting back and forth. This is a cool 6 hour mix by Doug and contains some rare early disco tracks! Enjoy!

GENRE: DISCO
From the Ben Plumly Jr. Reel-To-Reel mixtape archives.

This is the earliest DJ recording that we have in our archives from Ben. This was one of Ben's first mixtapes when he first started DJing in 1979. He wanted me to title it "First Rookie Mix" since it's the beginning of his DJ career and a few mixes are a little loose. This was a time where DJs were mixing tracks with live percussion, so mixes weren't as tight as drum machine driven tracks. Enjoy!

Adding to the musical legacy of Roy Thode I am pleased to present a new series, “Roy Thode’s Musical Mystery Tapes Discovered”; a collection of previously lost or unidentifiable recordings. This first installment is a cooperative effort with Jim Hopkins and his San Francisco Disco Preservation Society. The musical surprise we are presenting here was discovered after reviewing Jim’s recent digitizations of the master analog tape reels that Roy recorded on Saturday night March 7, 1981 at The Saint, in NYC. This music was a surprise we thought worth sharing as well!!

This is currently the earliest DJ mixtape that we have in our mixtape archives. A time before beat matching. When DJs would slip cue 45's to have a non-stop mix. This tape is 49 years old!.....therefore, there are some audio dropouts at the beginning and end of the tape.

*This tape was recorded at the slowest speed on reel -to-reel tape, at 1 7/8" inches per second. This speed is usually reserved for voice recording only. Since the tape was recorded at the slowest speed, there's more room for drop outs in the audio, which you will hear from time to time throughout the mix. The tape is also 45 years old. I was able to polish up the audio, remove hum that existed in the recording, and remove the excessive tape hiss.

From the Jason WIlliams reel-to-reel collection. Unfortunately, the tape on the reel was Maxell brand, on a Scotch brand metal reel, and the tape was in the wrong box. Therefore, this is a mystery mix, with no knowledge of the DJ that made it. It's still a cool 3 hour mix. Most likely recorded by a S.F. DJ back in 1980. Enjoy!

*This tape took some time (6 hours) to restore. The recording was taken from a reel-to-reel tape, that had been converted to a VHS Hi-FI video tape, in the mid-late 80's. VHS Hi-FI tapes that were recorded in the SLP (slowest speed) are very hard to restore. After years of the DJ VHS tapes sitting in poor storage conditions (sometimes in damp/hot garages, storage units, or basements), the tape tends to stretch out/shrink, which causes bad tracking issues when playing the tape back. This tape was having tracking issues, so I sent the tape to my friend Tom Yaz. He has a high end VHS cleaning machine that cleans tapes, and revives them. He then converted the audio to digital for me, to remaster. I had to trim 25 mins. off of the beginning of the mix, due to major crackling issues in the recording. There are some areas of the mix that had very minimal tracking issues. I was able to remove most of the sound artifacts, but there may be some areas that you can slightly hear it in the mix. I was also able to remove the tape hiss from the recording, as well as slight hum sound from the VCR. New EQ was also applied.

GENRE: IMPORT DISCO

I just found this tape in a stack of damaged tapes to be repaired.

Another homemade reel-to-reel mixtape by Michael Lee, made with his import 7" 45RPM collection. The brand of tape (Scotch) that it was recorded on is notorious for sticky shed syndrome, after decades of storage. This is where the tape layers stick together on the reel. When you try to play the tape, it sheds apart and the tape is destroyed. I was able to ressurect the tape with the "tape baking" process, and was able to save it. The only part of the tape that couldn't be saved, was the last few minutes, which shred apart. Therefore, the first song on side 2 had to be removed. Click the photo above to see the track listing. Enjoy!

PLEASE NOTE: There are a few 10 second gaps where a song ends, and the next song starts. This was intentional by the DJ, and was done to get applause from the crowd. Also, this set was recorded on a longer reel to reel tape, which means that the tape is a lot thinner than a normal reel-to-reel tape. Therefore, due to the age of the tape, and the tape being thin, there are some audio dropouts throughout the mix

Today (posting date) marks the 43rd anniversary of 12 West nightclub that was based in New York from 1975-1981! Happy Anniversary! This live DJ recording was another reel-to-reel tape that I had to salvage from the mold monsters. It was covered in mold. It took close to 3 hours to fully hand remove all of the mold from the tape. It was a success, and another tape has been resurrected! This mix was recorded New Years Eve 1976-into-1977. Another early recording of DJ Jimmy Stuard! Alan Harris had me hold the release of this recording to be presented today for their 43rd anniversary. *Contains a live performance of "I Need A Man" by GRACE JONES!

This tape was covered in mold. I had to hand clean the tape and removed all mold. The tape was also improperly wound on the reel. Parts of the tape were bent over, which created drop outs in the recording. Once digitized, I used a spectrogram to view the audio waveform to locate the drop outs. I then had to edit those out, or replace them with identical sections of the recording. There are still some drop outs in the live Grace Jones performance of "I Need A Man" I was unable to fully remove those drop outs due to grace singing live over the track.

I'm pretty sure that I removed all of the drop outs that I could locate. If you hear any (besides the ones in the Grace Jones performance), please let me know the time position in the mix in a comment below. Thanks!

This tape was difficult to transfer, due to the tape particles shedding off while converting. It was lightly shedding (which is not common for Maxell tape), but I was able to digitize the reel after stopping the tape quite a few times to clean the shedding particles from the clogged tape heads. The sections were then edited back together to reconnect the mix.

Recorded Saturday night 11-5-77. The week after his munumental performance on Halloween weekend. Jim started the evening with this classical piece, which was in keeping with his lifelong desire to be a classical opera singer. The evening turned into a collection of incredible music and mixesd, and another unforgettable evening and morning with Jim. As difficult as we all thought it would be for him to follow his performance of a week earlier, he once again proved he was the Master Of The Turntables. The people who did not attend Halloweenweekend showed up in force to enjoy the night. Approx. 1800 came though the Saturday night and morning.

Recorded Saturday night 10/29/77. Burgess was at the top of his game at 12 West. This was his first Halloween of 2 performances, and the year Star Wars popped up on the scene. Jim used a number of techniques: dialog from the Star Wars movie and other movies. Overlays of record on an instrumental break in the recording giving a completely different sound to both recordings. Phasing two of the same records which dropped out the bass and gave the record a spacey sound, playing two records a beat behind to echo the verse, and his classic signature movement of "Magic Bird Of Fire". Mid-point in, "Magic Bird Of Fire", the 12" inch single 45 RPM recording, he waited for the appropriate time and changed the speed to 33 RPM at the end of the recording. All in attendance stopped and applauded his genius. He played to a crowd of 1500 most of whom wore great costumes and disguises.

The "Magic Bird Of Fire" portion appears on the weekend after Halloween recording on 11/5/77

Recorded live at the Trocadero Transfer in San Francisco. I posted this in the past, but it was a direct transfer from the reel-to-reel tape. This version has new EQ, and all levels have been leveled out between songs. From the Rod Roderick tape archives.

Alan wrote: Recorded live Saturday night, May 5, 1979. This evening was extra special and was the "Rhinestone Cowboy" party that was attended by over 2200 people. Most members and guests wore something cowboy or Indian. There is a very specail moment where Alan overlays Glen Campbell's Rhinestone Cowboy over Gino Soccio's "Dancer", a brilliant execution.

DJ Jimmy Stuard was was a rising star in New York City. He had made the move to NY under the recommendation of Billboard Magazine's Barry Lederer in 1976.

Stuard was originally from Oklahoma, and moved to Boston to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Like many others (Arthur Baker, Tom Moulton, Maurice Starr, Michael Jonzun, John Luongo, etc.), he emerged from the fertile Boston scene before relocating to NY. Boston disco fans will remember him as an early DJ at the club 1270, and in both cities his influence and technique as a DJ is still famed. His only record work was mixing the US version of "Sessomatto," the first release on West End Records.

From the Michael Lee tape archives. This tape was recorded live at The Mind Shaft in San Francisco. I was able to salvage most of the recording, minus the last 42 minutes of Side B. The recording was on Scotch brand reel-to-reel tape. This brand of tape is notorious for sticky shed syndrome. This is where the tape becomes sticky and binding starts to fall apart and clog the tape machine heads. "Baking" the tape is a process of drying the tape out in a food dehydrator, to try and restore the binding to it's original state, to be able to to try and digitize it. Usually this process only takes 2 hours in the dehydrator. This tape took 6 hours in the dehydrator, and it was still clogging the heads on the tape machine.

From the Jimmy DePre tape archives. Recorded live at D.C.A. nightclub in Philly, PA This recording was taken from an 8-track tape cart. Therefore, the sound quality is not of the highest quality. You will also hear a slight dropout every 22.5 minutes due to the tape changing tracks. I did the best that I could to remaster this recording. Excessive tape hiss was removed, and all levels between songs have been leveled out.

This is tape 1 of 2 for that night.

From the Michael Lee tape archives. This is a home recorded mixtape. It's a slip cue mix and not beat matched. This is a compilation that Michael made from his import disco 45RPM record collection. There are some great rare disco tracks on this tape! I did some remastering on the mix. I added new EQ, and leveled out the levels between songs, so that they all match.

Another rare bar mixtape from 1976. This was the soundtrack for The Bolt bar in San Francisco, in 1976! From the Rod Roderick tape archives. These tapes were bar tapes that were played off of reel-to-reel tape. Perceptive Audio supplied the tapes to bars. The tapes were made by Sanford Kellman (He later owned The I-Beam club in San Francisco).

I spent 3 hours repairing/restoring this rare Disco DJ mix....

Whomever digitized the original digital file for this, had the audio recording level set too high. The audio file was over saturated in volume, and distorted. I was able to repair it, to the correct level, and remove the distortion. Tape hiss has been removed, and proper EQ was applied. I also enhanced the stereo seraration.
