Having previously released on RNT as part of duo Balako, Diogo https://soundcloud.com/strausz now makes his solo debut on the label with an absolutely stunning offering of electronic Brazilian jazz. A São Paulista now living in Paris, Strausz made international waves earlier this year with his piece ‘Pausa,’ a grand and sprawling orchestral work written and recorded by musicians around the world in isolation. The two songs on Strausz’ new Emancipação EP showcase his gift for instrumental composition that feels at once both fresh and timeless, informed heavily by the classic Bossa Nova and Samba repertoires of his native Brazil, yet translated through a modern production lens, and executed with exceptional musicianship. The end result is an undeniably unique sound that will fit equally well in the collections of jazz and MPB aficionados, as in the crates of modern DJs and listeners alike.

A pitched down lead vocal, crisp drum programming and slinky synth work demonstrates that Mary Jane (not cocaine) is a helluva drug on the A side's 'Main Thing.' On the flip, 'F.T.F. (Freak The Funk)' explores a familiar sample from the golden era of hip-hop, recontextualized in vocoded synths, funky wah-wah clavinet, and shimmery strings layered perfectly over a pulsating disco groove. Mating Ritual Recordings chief @martinhayes returns to RNT and once again shows his knack for simple yet effective selections and slices. Leaning a bit more toward up-tempo material than his previous RNT EP, “Turn You On” does indeed burn relentlessly hot, while “Love Shine” cruises along, alternating between an infectious electric piano vamp and driving percussion. “Easy Come Easy Go” strikes an optimistic and orchestral tone, sending us blissfully into space, and then “Tiff” rounds out the EP with it’s slow and soulful lilt.

The record starts out smooth and summery with The Flow, a club-ready rework of an underground Jamaican disco classic, followed by the furious afro-boogie stomp of “SPF.” On the b-side an extended percussion jam builds ferociously and finally drops into a lovely lesser-known revamp of a killer disco anthem.
