The forty-first episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Here’s To You, Mrs Hammer and was the nineteenth and final episode of the show’s second season. Sledge suffers an emotional blow as his best friend from High School prepares to marry the former Mrs Hammer. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at some soul searching for Hammer and a dramatic conclusion to the series.
During an interrogation, Hammer is surprised when a suspect’s lawyer turns out to be his old friend Scott Grable (Michael Kaufman) who turns out to be a formidable legal opponent. The pair become reacquainted and spend some time together looking back on the old days.
A dramatic twist follows when it transpires Grable is engaged to be married to Sledge’s ex-wife, Susan Hilton (Heather Lupton, married to David Rasche in real life!). This prompts some serious soul-searching for Hammer and, ultimately, a significant emotional development. Christopher Jackson also appears as Grable’s client.
The episode was directed by Bill Bixby in the last of his eight episodes, with writing credits going to long-time contributors Mert Rich and Brian Pollack.

The fortieth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled It Happened What Night? and was the eighteenth episode of the show’s second season and the penultimate show of the run. Sledge and Dori are seconded to the Narcotics team to help bust a big drug deal. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at a forgotten evening.
When an old friend of Trunk’s, Roy Talbot (Stanley Brock), arrives at the precinct to request the assistance of Sledge and Dori in completing one last operation ahead of his retirement the Captain is happy to help out.
Hammer and Doreau pose as newlyweds and occupy the bridal suite next door to the anticipated bust, cuddling through a hole in the wall. When a pushy bellboy starts them off on a bottle of champagne the duo’s composure starts to slip and they are discovered passed out in bed after the operation has gone badly wrong. A disciplinary hearing stats and looks bad for both officers, until Roy Talbot Jr (Mike Pniewski) shows up with some dramatic evidence.
Monte Landis as an eccentric hotel manager and Sandy Kenyon as the disciplinary hearing chairman, provide entertaining cameos.
The episode was directed by Bill Bixby in the seventh of his eight episodes, with a script by Mark Curtiss and Rod Ash, the last of their five collaborations for the show.

The thirty ninth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled The Secret of My Excess and was the seventeenth episode of the show’s second season. Sledge is assigned a top secret mission by Governor La Chatte. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at a great backwards thinking man.
Sledge is assigned a covert mission by James Karen‘s Fritz La Chatte, the Californian Governor, whose little girl has left him. Assuming the Governor is referring to his daughter, Hammer works diligently to locate her without raising suspicions at work. Dori is a bit more alert than he thinks though and is soon on his case.
After interrogating Joey the Slug (Mark Blankfield) and making a nuisance of himself at Big Mabel’s (Marianne Muellerleile) bar, Sledge tracks down the girl he’s looking for – Angel (Mary Otis – we think this is the same Mary Otis. Please correct us if you know better!). Hammer and Doreau deliver the girl to La Chatte in the middle of a fundraiser, causing some consternation as his wife (Anna Marlowe) reveals he has no daughter. Ernie Sabella (Al Fresco, a sleazy motel manager) and Mark Holton, as the Governor’s resourceful aide, also appear.
The episode was directed by Dick Martin in the last of his three episodes, with Alicia Marie Schudt penning her only Sledge Hammer! script.

After an executive is killed during a paintballing excursion, Sledge and Dori must figure out which of his colleagues pulled the trigger. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at Doreau’s growing frustration.
When Edmund Bryce (Roderick Cook), a major company executive, is shot dead by live bullets at a paintballing course suspicion falls on his former colleagues. The initial evidence points towards Arvin Swenson (Anthony De Longis), but additional information brings both Nakamichi (Glen Chin) and Durward Monroe (John Paragon) into the picture.
While Sledge manages to obtain an invitation to the next paintballing trip, Dori ponders whether all three might have been working together – an idea so abhorrent that Captain Trunk is taken aback. Out on the course Hammer comes face to face with the killer, office secretary Tina Clanton (Lisa Robins) – Bryce’s scorned ex-lover – and a showdown ensues.
The episode was directed by Dick Martin in the second of his three episodes, while Chris Ruppenthal penned his last of four stories for the show.

The thirty seventh episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Sledge, Rattle and Roll and was the fifteenth episode of the show’s second season. When a rock star is killed, his bandmates die in a plane crash and their producer is knifed at his desk, Sledge must overcome his loathing of rock music to investigate the case. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at the consequences of treating people badly.
The murder of a punk rock star, Rak Vulture (Dana Williams), leads Dori and Sledge into an investigation mired in the murky world of the music industry. Rusty’s erstwhile bandmates Rocket, Buzzy and Zippy (Page Mosely, Lee Arenberg and B.J. Barie respectively) deny involvement and set off, while their put-upon roadie Rusty (Tommy Swerdlow) is left to bear the brunt of their ‘edgy’ behaviour.
Manager Jerry Vicuna (Davy Jones of the Monkees) offers Hammer and Doreau little of substance to progress the case, but when the band is killed in a plane crash further enquiries are required. Vicuna’s own death leads our dynamic duo to Rusty, who turns out to be Rak’s more talented and less remunerated brother, who has been working hard to gain a measure of revenge on those who have wronged him.
The episode was directed by Bill Bixby (the sixth of his eight episodes behind the camera), while regular contributors Mert Rich and Brian Pollack provided the writing in their penultimate episode of the show.

The thirty sixth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Model Dearest and was the fourteenth episode of the show’s second season. Dori goes undercover without authorisation to try and infiltrate a human trafficking operation. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at one of the worst attempts at tail covering in television history.
When Sledge hears noises in his hallway his enquiries reveal that his neighbour is missing following an assignment at a local modelling agency and her cousin, Sally (Jill Jacobson), has come to town looking for her. His clumsy efforts to gather additional information lead to a ruined photoshoot, drawing the ire of photographer Don Merrill (Brion James) and the owner of the agency, Jessica Hayden (Deborah Wakeham).
Dori takes a unilateral decision to go undercover at the agency where she is almost exposed by an unwitting Sledge (who has stopped by to apologise to Jessica for his earlier indiscretions). The investigation is assisted, however, in an unlikely way when Hammer’s landlady Miss Davies (Nancy Parker) describes a plumber who was lurking around at the exact time Sally is badly hurt at her cousin’s apartment and Sledge identifies the man as Merrill. Both Hammer and Doreau discover that the agency is selling women to foreign dignitaries, but Dori isn’t about to let herself become the property of a mysterious Sheikh (Mort Sertner) and fights her way clear, just as Sledge reveals himself undercover as a member of the Sheikh’s security team.
The episode was directed by Dick Martin (the first of his three episodes behind the camera) working with a script by returning writers David Ketchum and Tony DiMarco (their last of four collaborations for the show).

The thirty fifth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled They Call Me Mr. Trunk and was the thirteenth episode of the show’s second season. When Sledge brings a suspect infected by a biological weapon in to the precinct it looks like the time has come to say goodbye. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at Captain Trunk’s moment in the spotlight.
After a late-night break-in at a secure military facility Colonel Poltz (William Smithers) contacts Captain Trunk to warn him about the intruder, Richard Sirod (Christopher Doyle). Trunk in turn brings Hammer and Doreau on to the case with strict instructions not to touch the suspect if they see him.
When Sledge decides he knows better and brings the soon-to-be-deceased Sirod into the precinct, the military initiates a lock-down that will result in the inevitable deaths of all those left inside. Besides Trunk, Hammer, Doreau, Daly and Majoy the group includes a fake Doctor and Nurse (Norman Fell and Dallas Cole), while there are also appearances for Greg Travis (as Roger, an attorney), Edy Williams (as a girl in a hallucination) and Diane Sainte-Marie as a TV newsreader.
The episode was directed by Seymour Robbie (his only Sledge contribution) from a script by Mark Curtiss and Rod Ash, familiar names both.

The thirty fourth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Ice Breaker and was the twelfth episode of the show’s second season. An Interpol agent requests help securing a venue for the visit of a prominent archbishop. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at Sledge’s ability to stand and deliver.
During a meeting with Captain Trunk Interpol agent Lionel Dasham (Adam Ant) is assigned Sledge and Dori to assist in the security preparations being undertaken at a local venue ahead of a visit from the Archbishop (Gene LeBell). Sledge is quickly dropped from the team and begins looking at a new case involving a dead body. When coroner Norman Blates (Kurt Paul) confirms the body is the real Lionel Dasham he realises Dori, who has started to fall for Dasham, and the Archbishop are in danger.
Teaming with Trunk to find and eliminate the threat posed by Dasham, Sledge finds Dori, who had been momentarily incapacitated by the villain after discovering his true identity. The case has become personal for her, so she pursues the fake agent while Hammer looks to protect the Archbishop (joined on stage by a local clergyman played by Fritz Feld). That proves a more physically challenging task than Sledge might have anticipated.
The episode was directed by Bill Bixby, his fifth of eight Sledge Hammer! episodes and was written by Mark Curtiss and Rod Ash (their third of five Sledge scripts), from a story by Chris Ruppenthal – his third of four contributions to the show – who would go on to write ten Quantum Leap episodes and two for The X-Files.

The thirty third episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Sledge in Toyland and was the eleventh episode of the show’s second season. When two people are killed by kids’ toys armed with real ammunition Sledge and Dori track the perpetrator down to a local toy factory. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at a painstaking investigation featuring multiple suspects and a group of giant humanoid rabbits.
When first Ronan O’Casey‘s Milo Tieup, a wealthy toy factory owner, and next his mistress Felicia Gilmore (Eli Marder) are killed by specially adapted Tieup toys, Sledge and Dori try to narrow down the potential suspects. Tieup’s widow Inez (Michele Marsh) and her lover Harold Bell (David Clennon), a designer in the Tieup toy empire, fall under early suspicion, but their alibis seem to absolve them.
Ultimately it is rival toymaker Claude Goldfunger (Michael Ensign) who bears responsibility for the murders, but after confessing he opts to try and take down Hammer and Doreau rather than come quietly, with predictable results.
The episode was directed by Gary Walkow, his last of three Sledge Hammer! episodes and was written by a familiar duo, Brian Pollack and Mert Rich, the eighth of their ten shows for the series.

The thirty second episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Hammeroid and was the tenth episode of the show’s second season. After suffering serious injuries in a fight with an android, Sledge is fitted with some cybernetic enhancements of his own. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at a moment of passion for Hammer and Doreau.
After a seemingly indestructible villain robs an armoured van Sledge and Dori’s investigations lead them to the laboratory of Dr Arthur (Art) Deco (Richard Moll), who confirms the criminal is in fact an android of his own creation named BORC. It appears BORC is under the control of Deco’s former colleague Malcolm Dench (Armin Shimerman) and set to continue his violent rampage.
After a crushing encounter, Sledge is close to death but Deco installs a series of cybernetic implants which not only keep him alive, but make him part-android. Hammer’s network of informants lead him to General Skull Fracture (Sid Haig) who succumbs to Sledge’s robotic attempts at persuasion and gives up Dench’s location, setting up a grand finale where Dori must face the possibility of losing Hammer for good.
The episode was directed by Gary Walkow, his second of three stints behind the Sledge Hammer! camera, and was written by Ron Friedman, his only contribution to the series. A year earlier Friedman wrote the classic animated Transformers movie, still the best Transformers movie ever produced.

The fourteenth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled State of Sledgeand was the fourteenth episode of the show’s first season. The precinct comes under siege after internal affairs force Sledge to give a Satanic cult leader his one phone call. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at the performance of Sledge, Dori and Captain Trunk under duress.
When Tom Henschel‘s Inspector Perkins observes Sledge being Sledge in processing the arrest of cult leader Slag (Mark Blankfield) the glowing report Trunk was hoping for evaporates. Slag is allowed his one phone call and dials Angel (Debra De Liso) who gathers the cultists, including Michel Voletti as a Soldier of Evil, to launch a siege of the precinct until their leader is released.
Sledge, Dori and Trunk try to hold their ground with help (or hindrance) from Perkins, a cadet named Ricky (Darren Powell) and Officer Grace (Toni Attell), while The Doors’ drummer John Densmore cameos as the precinct janitor.
Director Daniel Attias followed his work on To Live and Die on TV with this, his final Sledge episode. The story was by familiar faces Al Jean and Mike Reiss.

Sledge meets one of his heroes, but the experience isn’t quite what he’d imagined. In this podcast Gerry and Iain focus on a personal connection between Hammer and his idol.
The venerable Stephen Elliott took centre stage in this episode as Gilmore Yates, a retired cop who inspired Sledge as a young man. The first officer to shout ‘Freeze!’ and an early proponent of police brutality, Yates is not doing so well in retirement. Hammer and Doreau arrive at a disturbance to find he has taken issue with a Social Worker (Daniel Radell), refusing to voluntarily move to a care home.
Sledge and Dori (the former more enthusiastically than the latter) allow Yates to ride along with them the next day, taking him to the firing range where his initial disgust at potentially taking a security guard job is outweighed by the salary available. Yates takes up position at Mr Smith’s (Alan Fudge) jewellers and is shot during a robbery soon thereafter. Dori and Sledge think the case is cut-and-dried, but Yates spots a discrepancy that puts them on the road to catching the true criminal.
The behind-camera talent was again drawn from a familiar pool, with Chuck Braverman working from a story by Mert Rich and Brian Pollack.

The mysterious Juanita (Eileen Barnett) is looking for revenge on her former lover, Alejandro, who lives next door to Sledge. Her henchman Ernesto Gomez (Shelly Desai) is charged with delivering the venom extracted from Juanita’s pet snake and he enlists an associate, Cindy (Karen Lynn Scott), to carry out the job. Cindy makes a critical error, entering Sledge’s apartment instead of Alejandro’s and poisons the inspector.
While Dr Warneke (Alan Blumenfeld) searches for an antidote, Sledge and Dori use Hammer’s last 8 hours of life to try and solve the case, with help from his landlady, Miss Hotchkins (Brenda Strong). There were cameo appearances for Larry Wilmore as a mailman and Patrie Allen as a police officer with a vital clue.
The team behind the scenes were a familiar group, with Chuck Braverman directing from a story by Al Jean and Mike Reiss.

The eleventh episode of Sledge Hammer was titled To Live and Die on TVand was the eleventh episode of the show’s first season. When a gameshow contestant turns up dead before playing for $1m, Hammer puts his General Knowledge to the test. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at some great teamwork between Dori and Sledge.
When Mel Jordan (Caleb Asch) turns up dead in the submerged car he just won on Bob Kenny (Peter Marshall)’s TV gameshow it seems like the pressure of playing for $1m might have been too much for him. Something doesn’t add up though and Hammer decides further investigation is warranted. Assisted by Doreau, he pressures Kenny and takes part in the show, putting his own life on the line.
Bob’s obsequious assistant David (Ken Lerner) and, to a lesser extent, his on-screen sidekick Inga (Suzanne von Schaak) contribute to the mayhem, while there are appearances from Arlene Banas as Mel Jordan’s widow and Cindy Roberts as her neighbour Mrs Perlin. Toni Attell makes a brief appearance as Officer Grace.
The episode was directed by Daniel Attias, the first of his two Sledge episodes. The writers were Mert Rich and Brian Pollack, the third of their ten collaborations for the show.

The theft of an entire nursery full of newborn babies puts Sledge and Dori into uncharted territory. With Michele Marsh‘s Nurse Robbins and Brion James‘ Felix Ridel looking to stay one step ahead, Hammer and Doreau pose as prospective adoptive parents to get to the bottom of the case.
They’re tipped off by Shy Eddie (Dennis Fimple) of a lead at a local adoption agency and although Miss Caulder (Margaret Muse) rejects them as unsuitable, her assistant Margaret (Sherri Stoner) points them in the right direction. Jeannie Elias and Grammy-nominated Burton Collins also appear, as distressed parents looking to be reunited with their baby.
The episode was directed by Kim Manners who, yes, is a man – contrary to anything you may have heard on the podcast. The same cannot be said of writer Deborah Raznick, though it can of Daniel Benton, who was also a writer on the episode. This was the sole Sledge Hammer involvement for all three.

The ninth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Magnum Farceand was the ninth episode of the show’s first season. Sledge infiltrates a group of vigilante cops to put a stop to their killing spree. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at Sledge’s attempts to go undercover.
Sledge faces trouble close to home in this episode as a group of vigilante cops begin a killing spree under the guidance of new DA Evelyn Collins (Janice Lynde). Hammer looks to infiltrate the group, which includes colleagues like Officer Braddock (Mark Rolston) and Officer Jackson (David Leisure).
Before the undercover work Hammer and Doreau begin their investigations by talking with recently released convict Rudy Mednick (Jay Rasumny), but his death prompts a change of strategy. It’s a good week for Captain Trunk too, as he gets to simulate a fight with Sledge to easy the Inspector’s passage into the vigilantes’ confidence.
Chuck Braverman helmed the second of his six Sledge Hammer episodes. The episode was written by Jim Fisher and Jim Staahl, the second of their two contributions after Season 1’s To Sledge, With Love.

The eighth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Over My Dead Bodyguardand was the eighth episode of the show’s first season. Sledge steps up to protect Captain Trunk when his life is threatened. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at the developing respect between Hammer and Trunk.
Sledge is handed another challenging assignment in this episode as Captain Trunk’s life comes under threat ahead of his crucial testimony against a narcotics syndicate. With Hammer personally tasked with ensuring the Captain’s safety, Trunk pushes back – insisting on carrying on with his work. Hammer foils an immediate assassination attempt within the police precinct, before he and Doreau accompany Trunk to an evening meal with his ex-wife Renee (Tracy Reed).
A further attempted killing is prevented at Renee’s home before Trunk is shot through the window of Hammer’s apartment. A stroke of genius from Hammer sees the media report Trunk’s death, but a crucial mis-step puts the lead assassin (Star Trek‘s Robert O’Reilly) back on the trail before a final operating room showdown where Hammer and the assassin go head-to-head with Trunk’s life on the line.
The previously blacklisted Charles S. Dubin was in the director’s chair for this, his only Sledge Hammer credit. The episode was the second of five by The Simpsons writing duo Mike Reiss and Al Jean.

The seventh episode of Sledge Hammer was titled All Shook Upand was the seventh episode of the show’s first season. Sledge acts as bait when a serial killer starts murdering Elvis impersonators. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at some stylish undercover work from Hammer.
After his assignment in the local high school in the previous episode, Sledge is forced to go undercover to solve a string of murders targeting successful Elvis impersonators when coroner Norman Blates (Kurt Paul) determines the victims have been bludgeoned to death with a gold-plated microphone. After taking tutelage from Tom McFadden‘s Mr P at the local Elvis School, he takes to the stage. (There is a real-life acting coach called Thom McFadden. It would be great if it were the same person, but sadly there is nothing to confirm the connection.)
Raymond Ma plays Yamamoto, initially observed as the Elvis School’s janitor, but later revealed to be the killer. His motive is to take revenge on inferior Elvis impersonators, who triumph in spite of his own more efficient impersonations. Director Jackie Cooper makes an uncredited appearance in the audience of Sledge’s Elvis gig.
Cooper directed the second of his four Hammer episodes, working from a script by series creator Alan Spencer.

The sixth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled To Sledge, With Loveand was the sixth episode of the show’s first season. Sledge is assigned to a local high school when staff struggle to control a group of rowdy teenagers. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at more character development for Hammer.
It’s another Trunk-lite episode this week as Hammer and Doreau are assigned to corral a group of unruly schoolkids when the teaching staff run out of ideas. One particular member of staff, Mr Meeks (Paul Keith) is reduced to writing punishment lines on his blackboard as the kids, including 8-Track (Stuart Fratkin), Whitey (Paul T. Murray), Squad (Michael Cramer) and Blade (Brian Tarantina) make his life a misery.
The leader of the group is a troubled youngster named Turk (Shawn Klugman) who is in over his head with local crook Ralph Roscoe (Norman Alden). Hammer sees something of himself in these kids and sets about trying to help them see they can have their fun, but within the bounds of the law, simply by seeking careers in policing.
David Wechter helmed the second of his three Sledge Hammer! episodes, following up the popular They Shoot Hammers, Don’t They?, making him two-for-two in episode titles with commas in them. Jim Fisher and Jim Staahl combined on the first of their two Sledge collaborations.

There’s not much for Captain Trunk to do in this episode as he’s left outside when Dori and Sledge are taken hostage, along with other bank staff and customers, by Frank Doubleday and Britt Leach‘s Cliff and Lou. Doubleday and David Rasche take on most of the work in this one, as Hammer looks to extricate the hostages from a sticky situation.
It’s a small cast for this one, with Michael Ensign (as Crandell) and child star Coleby Lombardo the only other actors to have much to do.
James Sheldon concluded a 35-year directing career with this episode – his only work on the show – with a story by Mert Rich and Brian Pollack, who were also involved in the previous episode, They Shoot Hammers, Don’t They?.

The fourth episode of Sledge Hammer was titled They Shoot Hammers, Don’t They?and was the fourth episode of the show’s first season. Sledge’s former partner escapes from prison and begins a violent rampage, demanding a showdown with Hammer. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at some character development for Sledge.
Much of the drama returns to the police precinct in this episode as Captain Trunk tries to prevent Sledge from indulging a former rival’s demands for a showdown. Dori Doreau tries to keep Hammer calm, but the inspector is determined to face the challenge. John Kogan (Jack Thibeau), Sledge’s childhood friend/tormentor and later partner in the police force, escapes from prison and has revenge on his mind.
Dennis Fimple makes an appearance as a skittish informant, while there are cameos for Charlie Brill as a suspect in a flashback scene, Simmy Bow as Sledge’s mentor Dead Eye Dan and from Jonathan Brandis and Shawn Donahue as young Sledge and young Kogan respectively.
David Wechter directed the episode, his first of three Sledge Hammer episodes. The teleplay was written by Mert Rich, Brian Pollack and Alan Spencer from a story partly their own and partly by Diana (or Jennie) Ayers and Susan Sebastian.

The third episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Witlessand was the third episode of the show’s first season. A mafia godfather puts a price on Sledge’s head and Hammer is forced to go into hiding. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at an early change of pace for the show.
Captain Trunk and Dori Doreau take a back seat in this episode as the threats against Sledge’s life force him to leave the city and his colleagues. After Al Ruscio‘s Don Phillip Souza puts a $1m contract out on him, Hammer survives a series of attempts on his life – including one by Lenny (John Milford), a fellow police officer assigned to transport him to a secret location where he can lie low.
After surviving Lenny’s attack, Sledge is found unconscious at the side of the road by Jacob (Lewis Arquette) and Isadora (Ann Ryerson), members of a religious community that lives in a traditional manner. Hammer is tended to on their farm, but inadvertently discloses his location on a tapped phone call, leading to a final confrontation with Basil Hoffman‘s accountant-cum-hitman Sam Steinway.
Jackie Cooper directed the episode, his first of four Sledge Hammer episodes, with a script penned by series creator Alan Spencer, the second of his five writing credits for the show.

The second episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Hammer Gets Nailedand was the second episode of the show’s first season. Sledge and Dori are selected to participate in a TV ride-along with City Hall looking for any excuse to cut funding for the department. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at the developing relationship between Hammer and Doreau.
Alongside the regular cast, Ronnie Schell is prominent as reporter Phil Gumm, an Action News correspondent keen to show that the stereotypes of a trigger happy, incompetent police force are grounded in truth. He asks and is assigned to ride along with Hammer and Doreau, together with his cameraman (Erik Cord). Things take a turn for the worse when the group are forced to hijack a car driven by a student driver (Lisa Robins) and take part in a high speed chase.
Also supporting the story are performances from Coleen Maloney and Duane Whitaker as rowing newlyweds, Robert Hallak as an armed robber unlucky enough to be caught in the act by Sledge and the film crew, Jennifer Barlow as a cringeworthy singogram that Hammer wants to send Gumm when he is injured in a car crash and Leslie Morris in the first of his 31 appearances as Officer Majoy.
Charles (Chuck) Braverman directed the episode, his first of six appearances behind the Sledge Hammer camera, working with a story by future Simpsons stalwarts Mike Reiss and Al Jean, the first of their five collaborations for the show.

The first episode of Sledge Hammer was titled Under the Gunand was the pilot and opening episode of the show’s first season. Sledge returns from suspension and teams with a new partner to investigate the kidnap of the mayor’s daughter. In this podcast Gerry and Iain look at Sledge Hammer’s debut and his first case.
In the pilot we are introduced to David Rasche as our eponymous ‘hero’ Sledge Hammer, Harrison Page as his superior officer, Captain Trunk, and Anne-Marie Martin as Dori Doreau, a terrorist psychologist. Hammer and Doreau are assigned to investigate the kidnapping of Francine Flambo (Judie Aronson), daughter of Mayor Jack Flambo (John Vernon). Hammer’s irregular approach leads to a dramatic conclusion.
There are supporting roles in this episode for John Lawlor as Police Chief Reisner, Don Stark in the first of his two appearances as Kurt Kruggle and Joanne Baron as the mayor’s wife, Mrs Flambo, who Hammer at one stage accuses of having been involved in her own daughter’s abduction. Interestingly, Baron founded and now co-owns an acting studio with D.W. Brown who played Williard Luxley in this episode.
Martha Coolidge directed the pilot, her only directorial involvement with the show. Creator Alan Spencer wrote the episode, the first of his five writing credits on the show.
