Janet Sweeney Rico is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs at Northeastern University. She has practiced in nursing homes, rehab and clinic settings, homecare, emergency, urgent care and in-patient settings as a Nurse Practitioner and presently practices in the emergency department at Massachusetts General Hospital. She received her BSN from St. Anselm College; her Masters in Primary Care/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a MBA with a specialization in healthcare from Boston University and her PhD in Law and Public Policy from Northeastern University. She has served as the Chair of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, the Co-Chair of Massachusetts’ Task Force for Medically Complex Individuals Turning 22 with ID/DD, on the Boards of the ARC of Massachusetts and Vinfen Corporation and on the Massachusetts’ Patient Centered Medical Home Council. She presently serves on Fallon Community Health Plan’s Board of Directors and as Chair of Fallon’s Safety and Quality Committee. She also serves on the Arc of Massachusetts Board of Directors and as Chair of their Steering and Policy Committee. She serves on the Massachusetts PCA Workforce and Advisory Councils. She is a Fellow in the National Academy of Practice and was the 2018 recipient of the Massachusetts’ Department of Developmental Disabilities Allen Crocker Award for leadership in clinical care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is the 2019 recipient of the Arc of Massachusetts’ Joseph Andrade Award for Leadership and was awarded the 2020 American Academy of Nurse Practitioner’s Massachusetts’ Award for Excellence in Advocacy. Hello all and welcome to Know My Nursing Story, a podcast dedicated to telling the stories of what it is like to be a nurse.
Over my twenty years in the profession of nursing, I've had countless one on one conversations with nurses about their interest in becoming a nurse, the journey including the periodic struggles through nursing school, caring for others, finding your specialty and looking beyond the current moments in time into the future.
Several months ago, I was walking home and it hit me. What if we could share stories of nurses in conversation with the world? How beneficial that would be for aspiring nursing students, aspiring nurses, retired nurses, and everyone else who is curious about the nursing profession.
I have always believed that there is a deep bond amongst nurses but that the scope, breadth and impact of being a nurse on the lives of others has not quite made it to the surface for the general population to be able to appreciate and fully understand.
My vision for this podcast is to give nurses the opportunity to share their story with me for all of YOU to hear and appreciate.
