Dawn continues her story of the solo cruise she took in the Caribbean.

  • Eating while cruising
    • Formal dining had a time and assigned seating, but the other meals were whenever
    • There are fancy “restaurants” that aren’t included in the norma meals/cost
  • What have you learned about solo travel that makes it possible?
    • She can do it and doesn’t need to have someone else with her
    • She won’t let not traveling with someone keep her from going somewhere
  • A plethora of people watching!
  • If you want interaction, you can find it, but you don’t have to

Dawn is back! She shares about her solo cruise that she took in the Caribbean.

Travel Story - Caribbean Cruise

  • First time cruising
  • Chose cruise line based mostly on locations & reputation
  • Part of the appeal is to see several different locations in one trip/mode of transportation
  • There was a day at see in between ports
  • Tampa to Costa Maya, Mexico
    • Mayan Ruins
      • Got to climb on some of them
      • There were a lot of bugs there, specifically mosquitos
    • Wished she had prepared for tips for guides and such; needed smaller bills to be able to give specific amounts
    • If you book an excursion through the cruise line, the boat won’t leave without you
  • Belize
    • Brought a smaller boat to take you from the ship to the port
    • Snorkeling
    • Private Island (owned by the cruise line)
      • You can only get to the island if you’re part of the cruise
  • Cozumel
    • Favorite excursion - swimming with dolphins!
    • Also got to swim with Manatees
    • When traveling alone, one challenge is if you want to go do something, but don’t have a place to put your stuff (like when you go to a beach)
      • Also eating at the buffet - when you get up to get more food, you lose your spot
    • Passports and ID cards
  • Grand Caymans
    • Went to a historical building
    • Turtle rescue
      • Breed sea turtles & release them back to the wild

Marissa continues her story about her post-college solo trip around the world!

  • Thailand
    • A well-traveled country
    • Was mostly in Northern Thailand
    • Friend of a friend in Chiang Mai - did a lot of eating
    • Ate a lot of Pad ka Pow, but can’t find it here very easily
  • Laos
    • Took the “slow boat” - takes 2 days to get to Luang Prabang
    • Went up in a hot air balloon
    • Ate bat, rat, & pig knuckles
  • Cambodia
    • Went to angkor wat - largest uncovered ruined temple
    • Most people hire a tuk tuk to take them around
    • She spent 2 days there and still didn’t see all of it
    • Even with touristy and busy places, there’s a lot of local knowledge of where to go when for the best experience
  • Vietnam
    • Ho Chi Minh City
      • One of the busiest she had been to
      • Follow the old lady across the street
    • Hoi An
    • Got into a train wreck
      • Train hit a dump truck, derailed several cars, it was fatal for some people
      • The ambulance there sounded like an American ice cream truck (pop goes the weasel)
    • Hanoi
      • One of her favorite places, food was very good
      • Many school kids who wanted to practice their English
  • Flew home through Seol
    • If you have more than a 2 hour layover, they will give you a day visa and give you a free tour!
    • One of the coolest airports
  • If you could only return to one city, which would it be?
    • Cambodia
  • Which country was hardest to communicate in?
    • Tanzania
  • What country did you feel the most at home in?
    • Slovenia

Marissa joins us to talk about her post-college solo trip around the world to Iceland, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam

  • Captivated by Rwanda
    • First time in Africa
    • Had a stereotypic idea of what it’d be like
    • Rwanda is the Switzerland of Africa
    • Has an interesting and important past
  • Iceland
    • Traveled with a friend from college
    • They lost her bag at the very beginning of the trip!
    • Laugavegur trail (4 day backpacking trip)
    • Reykjavik’s favorite food is the hot dog
  • Croatia
    • Went to islands, saw ruins, great food
    • Was in Dubrovnik during the height of Game of Thrones...quite touristy
    • In Zagreb - the museum of broken relationships
  • Bosnia - Herzegovina
    • Got to hear stories from people who were there when Sarajevo was under siege
    • Mostar - beautiful bridge & old buildings
    • Some east meets west architecture
      • Austrian-esk & Turkish influence
    • When visiting someone, they will always offer you coffee, but they only want you to stay if they offer you food
  • Slovenia
    • An amazing tiny country that has the best of the countries around it
    • Julian Alps
    • Coast (similar to Croatia)
    • Food from Italy
    • Caves
    • Many people were happy to have tourists there
    • Many Slovenian cities have their own cakes
    • Got to stay on a friend of a friend’s sheep farm
  • Rwanda
    • Borders lake Kivu (on one side) that has CO2 building up in the bottom of the lake and could kill life if there’s an earthquake
  • Tanzania
    • Went on a safari in Serengeti National Park
      • You seem to step out of the culture in these experiences because the locals often can’t afford to stay in places like that
    • Stayed near Kilimanjaro
    • Sitting in the back of a bus with chickens and a goat
  • Kenya
    • Maybe don’t stay in River Road in Nairobi
    • Easier to navigate because more people spoke English
    • Went to Mombasa on the coast
      • Lots of Muslim heritage
      • Can get chai on the beach
    • Took a train called the “Lunatic Express”
      • Long train ride, about 24 hours
      • Like a high speed safari with sleeper cars
  • Nepal
    • Kathmandu
    • Trekked the Annapurna Circuit: 12 - 14 days
    • Got chased by a cow, hid up a tree
  • The emotional side of the solo travel:
    • It was really hard to say goodbye to people over and over again
    • When you’re traveling alone for that long, you do want to meet people and make new friends
    • You can take breaks and take care of yourself while traveling

We continue Scott’s story from his adventure on the Mongol Rally!

  • Uzbekistan - Bukhara
    • Got sick, so didn’t get to see much
  • Tajikistan
    • A very poor country
    • Dushanbe
    • Pamir Highway
      • Mostly unpaved road that snakes through the mountains
      • Right across the river from Afghanistan
      • Stayed overnight at a random house/truck stop in the middle of nowhere
  • Kyrgyzstan
    • Still had issues with the head gasket
    • Google re-routed them that changed 10-12 hour trip into a 2 day trip across unpaved, bad roads!
    • Lots of wild horses everywhere
  • Kazakhstan
    • One of the largest countries in the world
    • The longest, most boring drives across the steppe
    • Almaty
      • Had met a woman in Iran who is from Almaty and invited them to stay with her family
      • They eat a lot of horse meat there
      • Got to attend a Kazak wedding, including a drag performance
    • Car breaks down in the middle of a marijana field
  • Had to drive around China
    • N through part of Russia, then into Mongolia
  • Mongolia
    • Lowest population density in the world
    • Roads were sometimes just paths through fields or sand
    • Had to cross rivers
    • Got stuck and the bottom of a rocky ravine
    • Friend contacts the American & British embassy in Ulaanbaatar
    • Find a hut they can set up a tent inside...but then a local Mongol showed up...maybe it was his hut
    • 2 teams from two towns were searching for them, but were having trouble finding them
    • The rescue team almost ran out of gas because of how long they had been searching
      • Then the second team found them from the other side
    • One of the back tires was bowed at a 45 degree angle

    • Each team takes different/unique routes

  • Romania & Bulgaria
    • This is where it felt like driving through the “Old world”
    • Transfagarashian highway (Transylvania part of Romania)

    • Entered 6 days after a coup (2016)
    • Cappadocia
      • Ancient cave dwellings with weird geologic formations

    • Tip - use a microfiber cooling towel
  • Turkmenistan
    • Takes hours to go through the border crossing...with the power out
    • It was like a drive-thru safari with flora & fauna, but couldn’t take pictures because it was a military base
    • Being pulled over and then all of a sudden cars show up (there weren’t any before)
    • They were the only ones in the hotel (nice 5 star hotel)
    • Darvaza gas crater (“the gates of hell”)

    • Had to get car towed to the border of Uzbekistan because their visa was going to expire
  • The American Embassy is really important & he’s really thankful for them!
  • US State Department App

Christine shares about her study abroad experience in Northern Thailand.

  • Spent 3 months in Thailand
  • Picked the program because she was sick and tired of the Seattle Rain
  • Focused on the gender dimensions of conflict
    • Working on the border of Thailand & Burma/Myanmar
    • Rohingya genocide crisis
    • Very recently there was a military coup
  • She was in Chiang Mai in Thailand for 90% of the time, which was very safe
  • Learned about eco-farming = designing a forest in a designated area
  • Mae Sot - border town between Thailand & Myanmar Burma
    • In Thailand they drive on the left, but Myanmar Burma drives on the right to purposefully make the border crossing difficult
  • The people were inspirational and incredible
    • Was so inspired and wants to help do the work they are doing, which motivated her to go to grad school to learn more so she can be prepared to do that work
  • Studying gender studies in conflict resolution
    • There are more women engaged in battle
    • Even those who are not engaged in battle are still affected and involved in the conflict
      • For example, managing resources for the village while many others were fighting, which is being involved in the conflict
      • Trauma also happens to women who are surrounded by and living in the midst of conflict
      • Gender, Conflict, & Peacebuilding by Kimberly Thedin
  • Northern Thailand is very different than southern Thailand (Bangkok area) and very worth the trip
    • Chiang Mai
      • Have khao soi (soup)
      • Visit the incredible temples - remember to cover knees & shoulders, take off shoes
        • Feet hold a lot of significance in Thailand
      • An old kingdom, so there are old walls
      • The northern gate has a night market with lots of incredible foods
        • “Cowboy hat woman” has some great dishes
      • Roti - like pancakes
  • If you’re looking for authentic Thai food, Noodle Nation on “the Ave” in Seattle is the closest to authentic Thai food
  • Learn a little bit of the language when going to any south east Asian country because fewer people can speak their language, so they really appreciate it
    • Thai is a tonal language, so the way you say the word changes what it means

Mikaela joins us again, and this time she shares about escaping to a lake and then the mountains in nearby states to work remotely from beautiful locations.

Travel Story - 5 months in New Hampshire...in the middle of nowhere...then to Vermont

  • She snuck in a trip to Costa Rica
  • Had not had a year without a stamp in her passport since age 8
  • The New England culture of having a “summer home”
  • “Summer Fridays” - no one works on Friday during the summer in Boston (or only works until 1pm)
  • Boston was bad with COVID in March 2020, so they went to a family friend’s lake house in New Hampshire
  • People in Vermont aren’t happy with out-of-staters buying property and moving to their state
  • She loves their condo in Boston and walking everywhere in the city, but right now, that life isn’t possible, so living in Vermont is a much better situation
  • If someone had about a week in New England, where should they go?
    • Fall: Fly in to Boston & rent a car
      • Drive up to New Hampshire
      • Stop in Lincoln - White Mountain Nat’l Park
      • The colors are beautiful and amazing
      • Drive down thru Vermont, starting with St. John’s Berry
      • There are breweries that only distribute in the state or close by
    • Summer: Fly in to Boston & rent a car
      • Fly in mid-week & go straight to Cape Cod (avoid the crowds!)
      • Day trip to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard
        • Take the ferry (you can walk on), but they book quickly on the weekend
      • Go up north to Maine because the coast is gorgeous
        • Bar harbor (go camping)
        • Spend at least one night in Portland (cute walking coastal town)
      • 6-hour drive total
    • Winter: Fly into Burlington, Vermont (don’t waste your time in Boston)
      • A bunch of mountains in Vermont
      • East Coast skiing is very different than in the West: it’s ice, not powder
      • There are some good mountains in New Hampshire & Maine, but Vermont is the best; all the mountains are within an hour-ish of each other
    • Interesting how perceptions of time and how far is too far away to drive differs from place to place

      • Couldn’t change her past, but was able to be a part of her future
  • Learn the history
    • 1994 Genocide
    • Hutu people group and the Tutsis people group
      • 800,000 people died, mostly Tutsis, from April - July 1994
    • The country has done a good job of working to rebuild and overcome the genocide

      • Grouped by trekking ability
      • You can hire someone to carry your bag
      • Get no closer than 20 feet...but you can’t make a gorilla obey that

Beka joins us to share about a mission trip she took to Tunisia!

  • Monastir
    • For many of the Tunisian high school students, it was their first trip to the ocean
    • Food was cafeteria food, which made things difficult with health
    • Bonus Tip: If the country you are visiting has worm medicine, buy it before you go home
    • Went through training in Turkey
  • Tunis
    • 2 day crash course in Arabic (national language)
    • Coffee Shops
      • Most are geared for men
      • Some are for men only
    • There was a small bombing that had happened just before they landed, so they were whisked away right after they arrived at the airport
      • Got into a fender bender, but the Tunisians talked for a minute or two and then drove off
      • Nobody really cared much about the car because no one was hurt
  • Stayed in a local’s house in Tozeur
    • Breakfast - dates from their family date farm, coffee, biscuits (cookies), fresh fruit
    • Tozeur shuts down in the middle of the day in summer because of the heat
      • Therefore a lot of nightlife
  • One night they stayed in the Sahara Desert
    • Rode camels into the desert
    • Got to sleep under the stars in the desert
  • Star Wars
    • One night they went to a cliff where they had filmed the movie
      • There were still holes drilled into the sides of some of the rocks
    • Took a 4x4 into the desert after nap time
      • Ended up at a salt flat, with one cliff that stuck out called “the camel’s head” and climbed up - maybe Chott el Djerid
      • There was a whole village left over from Tatooine sets
        • The only other people there are trying to sell you stuff
    • Luke’s House!
      • Again, it’s the only thing there
      • If you didn’t know where to look, you would never have found it
      • But there was a road leading to it
    • https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/leftover-star-wars-sets
  • Castle that looked really big, but it was just a thin plastic material
  • If you could take us with you to one part of your trip, where & why?
    • Riding camels into the desert and sleeping under the stars
  • What’s your next trip
    • To Texas to see family and go to a wedding
  • Do you have any travel questions for us?
    • What’s your favorite hole in the wall restaurant?
      • Cheryl - olive oil jar restaurant (Monte Testaccio) Flavio al Velavevodetto Rome, Italy

For Winter Break, we decided to binge some classic TV! We watch a lot of episodes from season five of I Love Lucy, where they travel to Europe. Turns out they didn’t actually travel to Europe to shoot these episodes, but they are fun to watch!

Elements of Travel Represented:

  • Ep 11 - Lucy struggles to get a passport
  • Ep 12 - Lucy gets a passport at the passport office...but there’s no one there!
  • Ep 18 - Paris at last
    • Travel as a local vs a tourist/tour group

Wedding Planner, Emilee, joins us to share about her experiences planning destination weddings!

  • The magic of “destination” can be 3 hours from where you live
    • It doesn’t have to be an exotic location; you don’t have to have a passport
    • KEY = has to be at least 3 days
    • Guest count is small enough for guests to stay in the same place
  • Who are the “destination wedding” type of people
    • If you feel like you’re giving something up, you probably shouldn’t do destination
  • Everywhere she goes, she builds in extra days after the wedding (not before) to explore and experience the location
  • The “wedding hangover” is a real thing
    • Can’t really do anything immediately after the wedding
  • Honeymoon advice: don’t leave the night of your wedding if it takes more than 4 hours to reach your destination
    • You will enjoy your trip so much more!
  • Unrealistic expectations for destination weddings:
    • How much it costs to bring stuff there
      • Factor in paying for extra baggage
    • All wedding information needs to be offloaded to the coordinator ahead of time so she knows all the info without having to bug the wedding party while in country
  • Packing
    • Guests - on their own
    • Brides - remember to pack something cozy and comfy, not just cute/sexy
    • It is humid in Mexico, so be sure not to bring hot, long sleeve, heavy material
      • Bring extras of everything because you’ll sweat more!
  • Traveled into Mexico with 180 maracas!
    • Was pulled aside in customs
    • She is often traveling with the materials for the guest welcome bags
  • How to make a wedding planner super happy?
    • Don’t buy things for them, but tips are great
    • Message gift certificate, wine
    • Once you make a decision, stick with it and don’t look back
  • Destination weddings are often cheaper than local weddings for the couple, but they are more expensive for guests
  • Working with the travel agent:
    • Intake
      • Kids or no kids at the resort
      • Look & feel (all inclusive or not)
      • How far away from the airport?
    • Options from agent
    • Agent coordinates all the travel!

  • Alotau

Kamryn’s experience included:

  • A focus on community engagement: education in schools, playing with kids

Hear about dancing in an insane asylum in Moldova, visiting Dracula castles, and eating 20+ donuts (because who’s going to say no to an old Romanian woman feeding you donuts?).
