One of the issues I have faced throughout my ministerial career is narcissism. I worked for, I worked around, and I partnered with narcissistic people all my life. I just couldn’t get away from them. I was subject to their power games, their manipulation, and ultimately their attitudes of, “I am in control.” I hated it, and I hate to see people today subject to the pain of environments where power is all about control. In this episode, Dr. Nathan Unruh speaks with Dr. Craig Piso, a man who knows about power, and has written a book called, ‘Healthy Power: Pathways to Success in Work, Love and Life.’

Abortion is a horrendous act and when a woman goes through this act, it can leave her with guilt, shame, and a sense of loss. Denise Walker understands this pain, and started a ministry years ago called, ‘Rich in Mercy.’ This ministry brings women who are suffering from their abortion, face to face with the forgiveness and mercy of God through Jesus Christ. Operation HighGround
Operation HighGround is a nonprofit organization that seeks to reach out to the most unreachable veterans who may not be interested in accepting help for themselves, but who would proudly jump at an opportunity to help other veterans. Operation HighGround is unique … not only in the method of involving our homeless veterans, but in the way we engage our sponsors, providing a win-win approach for all. We seek to improve and re-purpose existing state or federal sites that may currently be under-utilized. We are prepared to use vacant land for modular housing in cases where government-owned buildings are not readily available. The veterans are taught skills by working on the reparation or building of living quarters, which is then used for medium- to longer-term transitional housing. We partner with other established organizations to assist with the screening and treatment of issues for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder or chemical dependency issues. Our sponsors assist in providing job opportunities for the newly trained veterans. This program also assists with the reintegration of veterans and their families. Visit Operation HighGround

Exodus 32 is where we read about the Golden Calf that the Israelites made, because of their fear of living in the wilderness without Moses. It is amazing to me, that they were so quick to abandon the God who just liberated them from being slaves, walking on dry land through the Red Sea, and now they moved from their God to a god made from their own hands. Golden Calves have symbolized this transaction ever since. Today, we might be still struggling with Golden Calves in the Church. For a long time, I have felt that pastors may be evolving into something more that the image of the Shepherd. I realize that most of us have never seen a real shepherd, but the idea of caring for people was the image that Jesus left us, defining what a human shepherd does. Today, the pastor is required to do more than just care for people spiritually, they often must do the fund raising, be the administrator, and in some cases, the pastor is more like a CEO. Pastor Walt continues Thinking Out Loud on the Woundedness of Men. In this final episode of this series, Pastor Walt tells us that men struggle with their identity. For most men, their identity comes from what they do, what they have, and even what they drive. A man’s identity is critical for his self-esteem, his perspective on how he fits into society, and how he sees women. Why do men struggle with who they are? Compared to women, men really are simple creatures … all they want is to be fed, entertained, and loved. If men are told what to do they will usually do it, but society doesn’t tell men what to do, doesn’t tell men how to be a man. Most men feel there’s no place for them, they feel put down, they have no self-esteem, they have no confidence, they often don’t have a father in their life. The most important thing in a man’s life is their significant relationships … with God, other men, their wives, their children. Men are not taught how to be in these relationships. These relationships are central to a man’s identity. Listen in to learn how a man can be in these relationships.

It stems from their wounds, the wounds from the father, other men, women. Men struggle with criticism and rejection. They are intimated by men they see as successful, and feel that other men are better than they are. Men feel like outsiders, like they don’t fit it. Men who reflect on an unfair past hinder their future. Men thrive in victim hood, but they need to learn to use their difficulties to overcome their past. Men need to press ahead, believe in their own worth, and believe that God has made them the head of the family.

Women say they want a men who can stand up to her, who can stand up for her, who can say no to her, a man who is authentic, who is congruent, who is secure in himself, a man who doesn’t compromise his own values, who asks for clarification, who doesn’t make assumptions, a man who can lead the relationship, who can make decisions, who has his own opinions … a man she can trust. Young men ask how they can approach a woman. Men have wounds from the father, wounds from women, wounds from a distorted view of God. Men don’t know who they are as men. The family is God’s perfect design, and Satin is destroying the family. This affects everybody … the whole structure of society. The church needs to address the breakdown of the family, and needs to address the direction men should take to protect the family.

This generation of men is vastly different than previous generations. 100 years ago, men needed each other, worked together, talked together, interacted with one another … not now, not in these generations. Some men want the connectedness that church can offer, but they don’t want Jesus. Keeping the Gospel center for men of every generation is what will bring men the connectedness they truly desire.

God created the family unit and that was His plan, but when you have the head of the family missing, something is missing in the family. The son hasn’t learned how to connect with other men. The son, as the father, are isolated and don’t have close relationships. The place for sons to learn how to be close with other men is in the church. The church can help young men become the man they were meant to be.

Repentance is a foundational teaching in the Christian faith. It represents the first stage of accepting God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Some think repentance only happens when we come to faith, but in reality, repentance is a lifelong discipline. Many have defined repentance as a complete 180 turn in either attitude or behavior. At last! The final episode which reveals and sums up the markers of God's prophetic End Times plan first revealed through Daniel and affirmed by Jesus. Jesus' End Times talk in Matthew 24 (also Mark 13 and Luke 21) touches on the simple and clear markers that signal the final countdown to His return. Two major markers have already occurred: (1) Israel becoming a nation in 1948 and (2) Jerusalem coming back under Jewish rule in 1967. A confirming sign is the repopulation of Israel's land as multitudes of Jews have returned home and are still returning. We are definitely in the prophetic "pipeline!" God IS going to establish His Kingdom on earth. How do we know that? The Lord clearly revealed it to Daniel in a couple of revelations over his lifetime. It was a Sunday morning, and it was an unusual poignant sermon on how evil has permeated our institutions. The pastor referred to a recent passage of a strongly-worded law providing safe abortions in our state. The pastor was not happy with what the legislature did, so he decided to end his sermon in stating that abortion is wrong. Immediately following the end of the sermon, a young lady got up and told her story about abortion. She was honest and direct about her experience, and her story is both heartbreaking and reassuring. In this episode, I talk with her as a follow up from that Sunday morning.

The Old Testament speaks about how the Feasts of the Lord were celebrations where God was recognized for what He did for Israel in the past. All generations were encouraged by these commemorations, and ensured that the next generation would continue with the truth of God. In the last decade or so, the church in America has lost ground in reaching the next generation. We see the results in the riots, in the disrespect, in the murders on our streets. I believe it can be attributed to the failure of the church to reach the next generation with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In this episode, we talk about how the next generation must be challenged with the claims of the Gospel or we will eventually lose relevance in our society as an institution of truth.

Here’s my problem. People who believe in God may do so without the help of what the Bible says about God. The problem lies in believing in a God that may not exist but is made up in the imagination of the person believing. The Bible gives us clear teaching on the nature of God … who He is and who He is not. For example, people will say God is love, which is true, but what is left out of that statement is that God also hates. Hard to grasp, right? Yet, that is what the Bible says. Another question that is often overlooked or not addressed is, “Does God Have Preferences?” Most people would say no … God is no respecter of persons, so He is neutral on showing any kind of preference to people. Proverbs 29:18 is one of the most misinterpreted, misunderstood, and misapplied Scripture, even though many Christians know it by heart. They focus on "Without revelation, people run wild" but ignore the second half of the verse, "but one who follows divine instruction will be happy." This verse has been memorized by many as "Without a vision, the people perish" and they use it as a justification to spend a lot of time, energy, and talent wrestling with church "vision-casting" and mission statements. I’m sure this episode will stir up some controversary. Why? Because, for some time, I have thought that the western church has some serious flaws in terms of practice and theology. Now, it is true, no church will be perfect … that is not what I am addressing in this podcast. What I want to do is to create some self-awareness that our structures or systems in the church could be the reason we are seeing more moral failure in the church. The open testimony of a young girl who tells how she was spiritually abused at the hands of family and leaders of her church. The abuse was all about control. When I first listened to her, I thought she was a disgruntled person who had an ax to grind, but after listening to her several times, I realized that I had experienced some of the same conditions in my life. I hope this podcast will make you think through what is being said in the church, and pray for God’s mercy to bring changes to needed areas of the church. I remember the message of the ‘Reformation’ that brought some needed changes to the church at that time, and I think it is needed again to return to the integrity of the Gospel. Tolerance is the modern battle cry of the culture. There are no restrictions when it comes to being you. The Jewishness of the Gospel is often overlooked in our modern church. We seem to forget that as Gentiles we were grafted into the Olive Tree of God. The Jews had all the covenants God made with humankind, including the New Covenant. We call the New Covenant the New Testament which tells the story of Jesus, who is the New Covenant. Yet, in spite of all the evidence that the Jews who gave us the Messiah, the Jews who gave us all the Scripture that we read, and the Jews who were the first believers in Jesus after His resurrection, we still do not recognize the Jews for their contribution to our faith. Abortion is a moral judgment. This issue must be a moral one because we are talking about taking a life. In this episode, my guest is Brian Walker who has been a long-time pro-life advocate. Brian and I have a frank discussion about today’s climate in American on the topic of abortion. As Brian points out, science is our friend on this one because it does identify a pregnancy as a human being. I find it amazing when we talk about moral human tragedies like the Holocaust, we know that is morally wrong, but the same application is never placed on abortion. Brian is the Program Director of Pro-Life Action ministries in St Paul Minnesota. Brian, along with his wife, Denise, have been active doing side-walk counseling at Planned Parenthood locations, teaching, and helping the church to become active in pushing back the demands of the abortion advocates. When I travel and attend churches in various cities or I watch church services online, I find a dangerous precedent being set by the church. It seems there is a one-sided God being presented that makes God into just a fraction of how He is described in the Bible. I won’t say what is said about God is wrong from the pulpits of the church I watch or visit, it just seems there are many themes about God that are being left out. When a Christian leaves the faith or is caught is some kind of un-Christian like behavior, what happens to that person in their discipling process? Now, no one is beyond temptation and often many of us slip and fall, but we remember how to return to God through Jesus Christ. Some of the problem lies with how we were trained, or as we like to say in the church ‘discipled.’ In business, when an employee is lacking in performance, it can usually be traced to how they were on-board or trained when they started. Discipleship is our training period … it never stops. But with time and experience, discipleship molds who we are and what we do. The culture is changing and is becoming more and more against Christian values. There are those who say that if our Christian values don’t comply and become supportive of the cultural mandates, we will be seen as combatants in our society. The pressure will increase until we give in … we have seen that reality happen with the homosexual revolution. Christians now are slowly accepting the homosexual lifestyle as acceptable to God. What a lie! What a crime against the truth of God’s Word!We are called to love everyone, to forgive everyone, and to tell the truth to everyone. Loving and forgiving is what we do fairly well in the church, but we are lacking in telling the truth. Pastor Walt continues Thinking Out Loud on the Woundedness of Men. Real men are supposed to be strong, courageous, competent, and masterful. Real men are not supposed to show emotions, just keep it all bottled up inside. Real men don't eat quiche. Most men don’t have any male friends, they don’t know how to be a friend to other men. Most men don’t know how to engage other men … they just talk about sports or politics but nothing meaningful. How are men supposed to relate to one another? How do young men learn how to relate to other men? Fathers are models for their sons, but many fathers don’t father their sons. Culture messes with manhood, the regression of society allows men to not be present and accountable. There has to be a place for men … that place is the church. The church teaches morals and values and older men give younger men mentoring relationships, and helps them to find their role in society, in the family, and in relationship with other men.

In this episode, Pastor Walt shares that it's not a man's world anymore. Men seem to be less like men, and men have been emasculated for several decades. Pastor Walt asks why would a man want to be more effeminate? This is Satan’s strategy. His strategy is to confuse and counterfeit what God has created. Policing like so many areas of authority in our society have been under attack for some time, and it continues to be in the news. Belshazzar, the last king of Babylon learned a very swift and harsh lesson about messin' with God's treasures. You see, he took the Temple treasures his ancestor, Nebuchadnezzar, captured from the Jews' Jerusalem Temple in 586 BC and used them for a drinking party in honor of Babylon's gods. As he did so he mocked Israel's God. BIG MISTAKE! God's hand appeared and wrote out his judgment … death, Babylon's judgment, overthrown … which was carried out that very night. Here's the point. We can REALLY anger God and invite his discipline (if not judgment) when we mess with His treasures. And here's something scary … God has treasures that go far beyond the Temple treasures. When I became a Christian back in the early 1970’s there was a movement known as the Jesus People Revival, and these were primarily people coming out from the hippie movement of that era. Churches were not ready for the long hair and barefoot new converts coming to Christ. In time, churches either adapted to these new hippie believers or new churches sprang up to accommodate them. Today, we do better at accepting people into our churches, but I’m not sure we are challenging them to be the kind of followers Jesus is looking for in order to fulfill the Great Commission. There are two prominent prostitutes in the Bible. Prostitutes? Say, what? There are many risqué Stories in the Bible, and the Story of Israel shows that She was the most prominent prostitute. COVID-19 is moving around the world. Some react by panicking! For others, it's just a highly contagious flu-type virus. Most of us are fairly tired of receiving updates on the COVID-19 virus, but I feel it is important for a short commentary on it. One of the ways we can evaluate a society’s value about people is to note how the society views sex. The first assault on sex was how we devalued marriage between husband and wife. In movies, we saw how easy it was to have sexual relationships and that set a pattern for how people relate to sex through casual sexual encounters. Then the assault moved on to include same sex relationships. Now, we now have moved on to the acceptance of having sex with children. Why is leadership the most important element in the Church? Well, we used to have a saying in ministry that summed it up … as the leader goes, so goes the church. Scripture tells us that leaders will be judged with a stricter judgment because of their influence. You see, leaders influence others. Cook's helper or Partner? In Genesis 2, when God creates the woman, she is described in relation to the man. In two Hebrew words packed full of meaning, ‘ezer kenegdo,’ God describes how the two are designed to go together. They are made for each other, just hours apart. Once together, they are to be a resourceful and satisfied pair, at home together in Eden. Modern language versions of the Bible translate these two Hebrew words in confusing and contradictory ways. But there really is no cause for confusion. The two words in Genesis 2:18 are not that hard to translate. An ‘ezer kenegdo’ is someone who is equal, a counterpart, one who works together with another as they help each other through sharing their strengths.

It turns out that there’s been a lot of pollution dumped into Genesis 3:16 by translations into the modern languages we use today. They mix new ideas into the verse and cover over the ideas God put there in the original Hebrew words of the verse. Translations make it look like God cursed the woman when God cursed neither the woman nor the man. The translation of that verse has been incorrect. So, why aren’t our translations doing better? More and more people everywhere are accepting homosexuality. Today, more than half of Christians agree with same sex marriage. Why? Why is this such a big issue for the church? History shows that homosexuality has not been good for any culture. Why should the church be concerned? Because of moral rot in society. There will come a tipping point in our culture, but the voices sounding the alarm now will not be around when that tipping point occurs. The church needs to be the moral voice in society. Ministry Leaders had a goal to get the Unchurched to go to Church, however, the end results were failure. We went from old-style music to new-style music, from sermons to short statements, and took out Worship and the Word. We just wanted to make the Unchurched feel comfortable. The Messaging of the Church has somewhat changed over my lifetime. In my early years of Following Jesus, the Message was about Discipleship and the Surrendering of the Will to God. It then started taking on the ideas that God wants us to live in Prosperity, then where authority was the key to living out a Christian life, and eventually changed into where we live out our lives in good behavior with the right kind of thinking. Yet, in each emphasis the Church goes through, it gets further away from The Cross and the Foundation of the Church. I have spent the majority of my life as a clergy person. The reason I chose this profession was because I was interested in helping broken people come to know the Lord. There isn’t a greater satisfaction in life then to know you had a part in helping someone find Salvation in Jesus Christ.
