S4 Reflection 03 – Mike: Loose Plans
Reflection is an important part of what we believe in here at xPRCx. Working on ourselves to better parts of our community, better educators, and better people. If we want our scene to be one where we all get better, we need to reflect on where we are at and what we have done.
Mike is supposed to be running the Chicago Marathon this year but those plans might be a little looser than he thought. Hurdles and barriers can throw a wrench in what we want to do and on this reflection Mike shares how he his keeping loose plans as he is working towards his goal of running another marathon.
So get your running shoes on but at point you might have to take them off.

S4 Reflection 02 – Josh: Change is Tough But Change Can Be Good
Reflection is an important part of what we believe in here at xPRCx. Working on ourselves to better parts of our community, better educators, and better people. If we want our scene to be one where we all get better, we need to reflect on where we are at and what we have done.
It’s a new school year and a new role for Josh Buckley. This year he is serving as an Assistant Principal at two elementary schools, splitting his time between both campuses. For his reflections this year he really wants to focus on his first year as an assistant principal and what he is feeling and working through. For this episode he is focusing on the challenge of this new change in role and how he wants to view the change and challenges it presents as an opportunity to learn and grow.
So as they say, the times they are a changing.

We are back again this summer with our Summer Conversation Series! Our goal is to hit up as many educators as we can and share their response to a single summer question.

Season 03 Reflection 14 – Josh – We need to do something different this time.
This is Josh. I am tired of kids being shot and killed in school. I’m tired of us as a nation being unable to do anything different about it. I am tired of people in power being unwilling to lead on this issue. This is like six minutes of venting. It probably has nothing new in it. You’ve probably said these same things yourself and at this point a ton of other people have said the same thing. But I didn’t want to talk about Professional Learning, classrooms management, or anything else to do with education this week. I don’t want to talk about punk or music. I want something to change.
If you don’t want to listen to this episode, don’t. I don’t blame you. But if you are tired of seeing students being murdered then join me in doing something different. Make this the political issue you will vote on. Make this the thing you will knock on doors for a candidate for. Make this the thing that you will donate money to. Make keeping our kids safe and passing gun legislation that will protect our communities the thing you are willing to stand up for.

Is it really the end of the school year? Josh wrapped up with students last week and Mike has 9 days left until the end of his school year! On this episode the punks reflect on this school year, on the things they struggled with and the things they are proud of. S3 Collaboration 02 with Joshua Stamper and Mike Earnshaw
One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record.
We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC.
On this punk rock collaboration, Josh plays moderator for a Q&A with Mike and Joshua Stamper about their recently released books on Edumatch Publishing. Joshua’s book is ASPIRE to Lead. In it he shares a guide for aspiring leaders to enhance their leadership capacity through active self-development and goal setting. In Mike’s book, The Educulture Cookbook, he hares real, relevant, and emotional stories that have helped to cook up collaborative school and classroom environments that showcase staff and students knowing their strengths, building on their weaknesses, collaborating, displaying empathy, and becoming empowered to work together to change the world.
They each share some key insight into their books, the impact of reflection and relationships in education, and what its like to juggle being a school leader, having a family, and writing a book.

S3 Reflection 07 – Mike: Sometimes We Need to Laugh
On this Punk Rock Reflection, Mike focuses on the power of laughter. He tells a personal story about taking the time to laugh. How laughing helps him wash away some stress and how it helps him deal with getting stuck in the pit. Some times it’s rubber chickens and sometimes it’s sitting around and just telling stories. Those pick-me-ups can help us get through and bring us up when we are feeling down.

Recently the admin team on his campus conducted listening session with parents, students, and staff. He dives into what they heard and how they are going to act on that feedback.

S3 Collaboration 01 with Gabbi Buckley
One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record.
We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC.
On this punk rock collaboration, Josh brings on his wife and previous guest collaborator, Gabbi, to talk about how we get beyond putting a bags of chips in mail boxes and help teachers see that we appreciate what they do and how getting involved in our community can help school leaders share the story of their school and the educators dedicated to the students in it.
Gabbi is in her third year serving as principal at Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ. Before that she was an assistant principal, team leader, and English teacher. The Buckley family dog, James Tiberius Vanderbeef (AKA Jimmy Beef), makes an appearance as well but he doesn’t have much of anything stimulating to add to the conversation.
So get a bag of baby carrots for your dog so they will be quiet while you listen and let’s get to it because this episode is all that and a bag of chips.

Season 3 Episode 04 – First Quarter Check-In

Season 3 Episode 03 – Reactions
It seems like we are all dealing with a lot this year. That instead of the normal juggling we do as educators we are actually juggling flaming chainsaws. You might have noticed that you're quickly going from zero to sixty. Or in Spinal Tap fashion, we go right to eleven. How we react is one thing we can work on. We are all coming to school, all of us, with stress, fears, worries, and the world on our shoulders. How we react to our students, our colleagues, and if you are a school leader, your staff, matters.

The PRC Summer Conversation Series keeps on rocking! One of the cool things about summer and punk rock is all the big shows and festivals. A ton of bands getting together and putting on one giant show! We decided to try and do the same thing with our Summer Conversation Series. We wanted to bring as many people on as possible to answer the question, what is one thing you would do to change education?

"Circle Pits are for Classrooms!"
Don't we want our classrooms and schools to be places that are engaging, active, and moving together with a common mission? Well, then we want them to be just like circle pits.
In this episode Mike and Josh discuss how schools and classrooms are the perfect place for circle pits. Kids up and engaged, moving together, and picking each other up when they "fall" in the learning. We all have a role to play in the pit. You might be the band on the stage or maybe your administrator is. Heck, the kids can even be directing the pit from the stage. The key is that we are all in it together, we are working in unity, and we are their to pick each other up.
So...let open up the pit.

Punk Rock Reflection 28 - Mike: It's Okay to Stop
On this Punk Rock Reflection, Mike shares two separate stories. One is professional and one is personal but they both taught him the same lesson. Sometimes it's okay to stop. We don't need to chase every thing, push as hard as we can, or do more than healthy. That is true for us all as educators and as humans.
So, pump the brakes, slow down, and as a wise man once said "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Punk Rock Collaboration 14 with Daphne McMenemy

Daphne is the author of a series of books about a girl named Gracie who learns to code and be a problem solver and recently published Gracie: The Maker. Episode Nineteen of the Punk Rock Classrooms Podcast!
"Split Albums and Sharing the Stage"
Bands in the punk scene would put out albums together where they would "split" the record. Each band would contribute a couple songs. Each band could count on the other to help get the record out there. Bands would often share the stage too. Mike and Josh remember $5 punk shows with 15 bands on the bill. Bands would share the stage and let the crowd hear so many different sounds all at one show. You could hear a ska band, a metal band, a grungy folk band, a dirt punk band, and a hardcore band all at one show. You were exposed to so many different types of music and it was awesome.
As teachers we do not have to be the sole provider of information and knowledge in our classrooms. We can put out that "split album" with a teacher in another content area by creating that cross curricular lesson or inviting them in to help teach a skill that maybe we aren't a master in. We can also share the stage by bringing in community members, and other experts (even virtually) to help our students learn from a variety of people and resources. We can connect our students to real world applications for what they are learning easier than ever before.

In this episode Mike and Josh discuss how schools and classrooms are the perfect place for circle pits. Kids up and engaged, moving together, and picking each other up when they "fall" in the learning. We all have a role to play in the pit. You might be the band on the stage or maybe your administrator is. Heck, the kids can even be directing the pit from the stage. The key is that we are all in it together, we are working in unity, and we are their to pick each other up.

The beauty of a punk show is that you didn’t need a fancy venue or really any venue. Shows in bowling alleys, church basements, house shows, someone’s backyard, a warehouse, an old grain silo, parking garages. It didn’t matter. If you had passion, instruments, and the drive to make it happen...a show was going to be put on.
Education and learning can and should be the same. We don't have to confine what we do or where we teach our students to just the "classroom." There are so many more venues where our students can learn, connect, and grow.
