In this episode, Carrie Pattison discusses the fascinating concept of pleiotropic effects in herbal medicine. Pleiotropy refers to the ability of a particular herb or plant compound to have multiple benefits on the body. One herb that exemplifies this concept is saffron, also known as the "golden spice." In this blog post, we will explore the historical uses, sourcing, and potential health benefits of saffron, shedding light on its pleiotropic effects.
Historical Uses and Cultural Significance: Saffron has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations, including the Romans and Greeks, recognized its medicinal properties. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote about saffron's use in gynecological conditions, while other physicians like Dioscorides and Galen praised its aphrodisiac qualities and ability to soothe skin irritations. The use of saffron in traditional medicine spans various cultures, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In this episode of the HealthQuestPodcast.com, naturopathic physician Dr. Kate Rhéaume, ND, shares valuable insights on stress management and the role of nutrition in supporting our overall well-being. Stress is a common experience for many of us, and understanding how to effectively manage it is crucial for our mental and physical health. In this podcast, we will explore some key takeaways from Dr. Kate’s interview and discuss practical strategies for reducing stress in our daily lives.
Understanding Stress: Dr. Kate explains that stress is any change in our environment, whether positive or negative. Our perception of stress plays a significant role in how it affects us. While short-term stress can be mitigated by stress hormones like adrenaline, long-term stress can lead to chronic health issues such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and increased risk of chronic diseases.

We have used Carlson Lemon Flavored Liquid Fish Oil for nearly 20 years. The difference in our health has been exceptional. Marine based omega-3 is my number 1 recommended nutritional supplement. I have come to believe that without sufficient and balanced omega-3 fatty acids one will struggle to manage inflammation. This has been my personal and professional experience.
There are compelling distinctions between Carlson Fish Oil and almost every other brand of fish oil in the market today. It is these distinctions I will discuss today with Jolie. It is easy to claim that a product is the best, but how do you know? The distinctions we discuss could be done by other companies but there are very few companies willing to commit to this extraordinary level of quality.

Krill are small, shrimp-like marine crustaceans that belong to the order Euphausiacea. They are found in all of the world's oceans, but are most abundant in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. Krill are an important food source for many marine animals, including whales, seals, penguins, and fish. They are also harvested by humans for use in a variety of products, such as fish feed, omega-3 supplements, and food for human consumption. Krill are known for their distinctive red color, which comes from the presence of the pigment astaxanthin in their bodies.

What else can we call it? NOW has tested many products and many have been found to have numerous significant problems. These products are then sold to an unsuspecting consumer that trusts that the supplements are what they claim to be. Amazon knows this. The FDA knows this. Yet both fail to take action.
This problems include but not limited to:
Many do not contain the potency stated on the label.
Many are mislabeled.
Many contain ingredients not listed on the label.
Many are contaminated with heavy metals

There is a lot of consumer confusion about foods and supplements as nutrition. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know which foods are truly healthy and which are not. With so much information available, it can be hard to know who to trust. This is why it is important to find an independent retailer to trust when it comes to finding healthy, natural foods and quality supplements..
Independent retailers have been around for decades, and they have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to natural foods. They are passionate about health and helping others, and they are not limited by the restrictions that larger stores face when it comes to providing information about health and nutrition.

Reducing carbohydrates and exercising are two of the most important steps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eating too much carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and other health issues. Exercise is also important for weight management and overall health.
Carbohydrates are found in many foods including bread, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables. Eating too many carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, as the body stores the extra carbs as fat. It can also lead to insulin resistance, which is when the body does not respond to insulin properly. This can lead to type 2 diabetes and other health issues.

Carotenoids have been shown to benefit skin health by supporting a clearer complexion while also maintaining the quality of skin. There are many different carotenoids, each of which produces a different color. The most commonly known carotenoids are beta-carotene and lycopene. Beta-carotene is responsible for the orange color found in carrots while lycopene is responsible for the red color seen in tomatoes. While more clinical trial data is needed, early studies indicate that the consumption of lycopene may decrease the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Colored carotenoids such as Beta-carotene and lycopene are already used in dietary supplements for their photoprotective properties. However, they provide skin protection at the cost of coloring or darkening the skin. When consumed in large amounts, the accumulation of carotenoid pigments in the human body has been proven to color the skin in the short term.

In this interview Ross Pelton discusses Rapamycin and autophagy. These were new terms for me. The story of Rapamycin is interesting and intriguing. Rapamycin is a drug that was developed after discovery on Easter Island led to the drug’s development. This is an example of how a natural compound in nature is discovered, researched and developed as a drug. Ross covers this discovery in this interview and in his newest book: RAPAMYCIN – The Most Promising Life Extension Drug. This was all new to me and Ross’ book is a powerful introduction.
“Autophagy (pronounced “ah-TAH-fah-gee”) is your body’s process of reusing old and damaged cell parts. Cells are the basic building blocks of every tissue and organ in your body. Each cell contains multiple parts that keep it functioning. Over time, these parts can become defective or stop working. They become litter, or junk, inside an otherwise healthy cell.
Autophagy is your body’s cellular recycling system. It allows a cell to disassemble its junk parts and repurpose the salvageable bits and pieces into new, usable cell parts. A cell can discard the parts it doesn’t need.
Autophagy is also quality control for your cells. Too many junk components in a cell take up space and can slow or prevent a cell from functioning correctly. Autophagy remakes the clutter into the selected cell components you need, optimizing your cells’ performance.” Source: ClevelandClinic.org

In this interview with Monique Wellise we will discuss the most important nutrients for cardiovascular support. It is axiomatic that a heart cannot be fully healthy if one is not well-nourished. A person who is well-nourished will do better than someone who is not. Is this even debatable? I think not.
This concept of being well nourished is at the foundation of all health. The body is dependent on an ongoing supply of the essential nutrients to function properly and to support the structure of healthy tissue. In this interview we will discuss Omega-3 Fish Oil, CoQ10 and Magnesium as perhaps the 3 most important.

“Think of your immune system as an internal network of cells, organs, tissue, chemicals, proteins, enzymes, and hormones that fight off infections and foreign invasions of viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, etc. Your immune system is always at the ready and monitoring your body’s health like a military detail protecting a physical border. When your immune system senses infection or bodily invasion, it will send antibodies or secrete chemicals in the body to help defend it.
Your immune system is usually on duty or activated without you even realizing it. If you have ever had a cold, fever, or mild inflammation, then those are good signs that your immune system is activated and working. Those are physical signs and evidence that your immune system is healthy, as unpleasant as the experience may have been.

In this interview, Dr. Russell Jaffe used a phrase that conceptually made a lot of sense in a few words. He said “Inflammation is Repair Deficit.” This simple sounding phrase is a profound statement that leads to seeking how to facilitate repair in the body.
Inflammation is not a disease. It is a result of the body’s attempt to heal. When we use targeted nutrition, we are giving the body the specific nutrients to facilitate repair. Dr. Jaffe’s research has led to our understanding of the role of specific antioxidants for inflammation repair.
“Inflammation is like a smoldering fire that eventually eats through the fiber of our being. Because it affects the connective tissue infrastructure upon which our bodies are built, repair deficits can occur in any part of the body that is stressed, lacking in nutrients, or more exposed to toxins. This makes inflammation an underlying co-morbidity for many ills

The Aquathin system uses “Multi-Barrier Technology” integrating three different methods to provide the cleanest and safest water possible. Aquathin water is pure enough to use in laboratory settings.
In order to make an informed decision we need to determine what is the problem and what are the possible solutions. It makes sense to suggest that you want to know the quality of your water source. Most people who take supplements do not know about DSHEA. Even within the supplement industry many people were not around in the early 1990s or don’t remember. In this interview with Asa Waldstein, we will discuss the whys and hows of DSHEA and how dietary supplements are regulated.
In 1991 David Kessler, head of the FDA, said all dietary supplements should be taken off the market pending clinical drug-like trials. Yikes!!! This would make virtually all supplements illegal. This was life or death for the supplement industry. FDA raided, with guns drawn, the office of Dr. Jonathan Wright. This became not only an assault on dietary supplements but on alternative health care providers as well. Supplement use was being criminalized.
The shockwave was enormous and galvanized a grassroots movement that led to the law that gave respect and legitimacy to supplements and alternative health. The past 27 years have been good overall but not without controversy and the need for oversight. This was very real and and serious time for the supplement industry, for alternative health providers, and most significantly the customers.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It makes up about 16% of the weight of the body and weighs approximately twice as much as the brain. Compounds such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are critically important for the structure, function and appearance of the skin. As we age, the body’s ability to produce these compounds declines drastically. Existing collagen fibers begin to stiffen, break and lose their shape and elastin fibers begin to fray and lose their elasticity. Age-related changes in hyaluronic acid also contribute to loss of moisture and progressive drying and aging of the skin.
Collagen & hyaluronic acid are key components that help maintain moisture and promote the skin’s strength, elasticity and smoothness. Over time, things like poor diets, smoking, UV sun exposure and just aging in general reduce the skin’s ability to produce collagen and hyaluronic acid. In this interview Ross Pelton will review the basic structure of skin, the skin’s two primary components, collagen and hyaluronic acid and how oral ingestion of these agents can reverse skin aging.

Your mitochondria are like tiny power plants within your cells. They use oxygen and calories as fuel to create the energy your body runs on, known as ATP (adenosine-5’-triphosphate). You have mitochondria in almost all your body’s cells, but they’re especially concentrated in the parts of you that require the most energy, namely your brain, heart, and muscles.
How much energy you have really depends on how well your mitochondria are functioning. When we are young and our mitochondria are strong, we have plenty of power to keep our brains, hearts, muscles, and nerves working without flagging. As we get older, though, things change.

“Stress & Anxiety are natural components of our daily lives. When managed they can provide us with a healthy dose of motivation and may lead to creative expression. When left un-checked and uncontrolled the effects can be disruptive to both our daily lives and to our health.
When we lose perspective on simple stress, impatience, irritability, lack of concentration or nervous exhaustion may manifest. It can take a physical toll on our bodies as well. Muscle fatigue, physical exhaustion and indigestion are just some of the side effects of un-managed stress.
The outside causes of stress can be due to a multitude of reasons. The problem is not so much the stress, but how we deal with it intellectually and how our bodies are able to deal with it physically. Our body’s ability to deal with and counter the effects of stress can be compromised by a poor diet, a lack of exercise, poor self-esteem, an imbalance of nutrients and, as silly as it may sound, a lack of laughter in our lives.

Phosphatidyl Serine (PS) can play a critical role in both maintaining and improving mental performance – name and face recognition, recalling locations of misplaced objects, concentration, and focus – which is often an unfortunate component of the normal aging process. A multitude of scientific studies have shown that SerinAid PS can significantly help maintain and improve mental performance, can help improve mood, and can make a valuable contribution to lowering both physical and psychological stress.
FDA Approved Qualified Claim
Recognizing how effective PS really is, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in February, 2003, granted two significant health claims for PS, indicating that PS may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in the elderly.

The magic is in the body
This is the initial premise: The Power to Heal, Resides in the Body! With this as the foundation, we can consider all healing interventions as means to achieve improved health by facilitating a healing response. All healing interventions can be judged on various criteria all of which lead to an understanding of how these affect the body’s ability to heal. Our goal should be to assist nature (our body and it’s processes) to heal, restore, maintain health. There are many safe and natural ways to promote healing and health. Naturopathy is one of the ways we can employ the healing power of nature.
In this interview with Naturopath Dr. Michael Schwartz, we will discuss the foundations of a naturopathic approach to health. I would contend that mankind has been using some form of natural healing throughout the existence of man. Mankind has always had the ability to assist healing, with each culture finding its own way. Michael describes the four foundational principles of naturopathy and I think these traits are seen throughout medical history. This includes Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and other traditional healing systems.

We all need clean water. We all depend on our sources for water to be pure, clean and uncontaminated. But how do we know? This is a big concern worldwide. We assume our city water supplies are safe, but look at Flint, Michigan. We assume well water is safer but that also is not always true. We assume that bottled water is a good alternative but consider the millions of plastic pollution caused by discarded plastic. Even bottled water is not always a reliable source. Water can be legally pure and still contain harmful contaminants.
In this interview with Alfie Lipshultz, we will discuss some of the many challenges with our water supply. We also discuss the best ways to assure your home has pure water. Alfie has been in the pure water business for 40 years as the founder of Aquathin Water Purification Systems. Aquathin Systems are used around the world. They are used in home settings and all the way up to large scale applications. I suggest that you explore the Aquathin website. We have learned a lot about protecting our eyes over the past couple of decades. The conventional wisdom was that there is nothing we can do to change the course of eye issues. Medical professionals used to tell us macular degeneration could not be stopped, much less reversed. We didn’t know that UV (ultraviolet light) was harmful to the eyes and more recently we have discovered the concerns over blue light from computer and phone screens
Surprise, we now know that nutrition is critical to eye health. Those of us who believe and promote good nutrition for health now have clinical studies that reveal the important nutrients that support eye health.

According to Mayo Clinic, nearly 70% of Americans use at least one prescription drug. More than half take two. I find this astounding. How is it that the majority of people need medications. They don’t. Why do I think that?

Why are mornings so hard for some people?
This is the question we are going to answer. We will explore some of the reasons why people may have this issue. Low energy in the morning is common. There are some people who simply are slower to rev up and this is their natural state. There are people who thrive as night owls and this is their natural state. So this discussion is for those who have trouble sleeping and/or difficult mornings. If you have challenging morning this interview will help you consider some of the most common possibilities.

As the population ages, more attention is being devoted to the prevention of disease and its effects. Heart disease heads the list, with millions of people suffering from it throughout the country. Aging also can affect the quality of one’s life–reducing energy and vitality. In recent years, medical research has looked to compounds known as antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals in the body, preventing cellular damage that can otherwise contribute to diseases. Researchers continue to find evidence that CoQ10 affects our health in powerful and positive. Studies link optimal immune system function with an increased level of CoQ10 in the body and prove that it promotes the maintenance of healthy tissue as well. With aging, the ability of our bodies to produce and metabolize CoQ10 declines, possibly from diseases, insufficient dietary intake, and oxidation. Some reports state that this decline in CoQ10 becomes apparent after the age of 40. In this interview with Dr. Barry, you’ll discover how to increase your energy, vitality, and improve your overall health.

This is the dirty little secret that the pharmaceutical statin manufacturers don’t want you to know. If you do not have heart disease, statin drugs are of no benefit, and they come with a huge risk of side effects. It has been said that statin drugs can actually increase your risk because of their adverse effects on CoQ10 levels. Remember that statin drugs exert their effect on cholesterol by interfering with liver function. This is not a good thing. Statin drugs have only been proven to be beneficial in men who have had previous heart attacks. I know that may be hard to believe but that’s what the studies reveal.

Your body comes with its own built in defense system that is always on surveillance to protect you from immune challenges and more by responding to attacks as they happen. Sometimes that is not enough. The challenge two-fold. The first step is to fortify our nutrition in order to support our natural immune function.* For many people this is works very well. So this would be considered as foundational.
But even the most diligent natural health consumer will be exposed to something at sometime and begin to experience symptoms of the emerging threat. The best response is to begin your program to bolster your immune system for an increased and immediate defense. I have found that if I begin my emergency protocol AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, then I most often can stop or blunt the effects. The longer one waits, the greater the risk of being affected to a greater degree. Time is of the essence.

It has long been a common held belief that eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) contributes to much disability and death. The consumption of sugar, salt, trans fats, red meat and processed meat have all been implicated in health challenges. Most of us have assumed that these foods are not healthy. The shocker is that these foods are at the bottom of the list of classes of foods that do us in. With the exception of sodium consumption, which is the number 1 factor, the other “bad” foods contribute far less to death and disability that we previously assumed.

CBD is perhaps most well-known for its benefits to the brain. Previously we have discussed issues like sleep, mood, stress, anxiety and inflammation. Those are powerful and significant all on their own. But research and experience is revealing that CBD has profound benefits throughout the body. Endocannabinoid System (ECS) receptors are found in abundance in the gut.
What is emerging in the science is that the ECS receptors are found throughout the body but especially in the brain and gut is where most of the heavy lifting is done. This connection between the brain and the gut has emerged to be one of the most important realizations of the past decade. We even hear of the gut referred to as the second brain. If you deal with pain and inflammation then it is in your interest to explore the world of nutritional solutions. Remember that pain and inflammation are symptoms of underlying disorder. Reducing pain and inflammation is important especially for those with chronic conditions. Using products like Endo Inflame can provide relief and comfort, which are very important, but they often don’t address underlying issues. For example, if you have joint pain for whatever reason, it is often necessary to seek relief from the pain. But for long term success you must also support the inflamed system or tissues. In the joint pain example, you want to support bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, collagen, synovial fluid, circulation, muscles etc.

Ultimately the solution involves creating environments where people have opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. Proper and targeted nutrition can make a huge difference. Has beneficial effects on key neurotransmitters*
Facilitates homeostasis (biological balance of body and mind)*
Nourishes the endocannabinoid receptor sites*
Aids production and retention of endocannabinoids*
Over the course of this series we have considered products for anxiety, mood and sleep and now memory and concentration. Each of these challenges can be inter-related as a problem and can easily lead to challenges in the others. Stress can affect sleep. Poor sleep can affect mental clarity. And they can all affect your mood. The challenge is to figure out the best way to nourish your system.

In times of change, one has to understand and adapt to that change. In this podcast, I will give my overview of how my thinking has evolved and how best to move forward.

I have a strong personal interest in this topic. I have reported on this frequently because my wife, Debbie has been challenged with Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 40 years. In her case it was severe. She left her job as a teacher in 1989 and never was able to go back to work. She spent the next 15 years just trying to survive day to day by consuming 8 narcotic Darvocet doses each day. Those were tough days. So we personally know the challenge of auto immune breakdown. I have great empathy for those who suffer and their families. Our lives were turned around in 2003. Greens and sprouted foods have been a part of the human diet for thousands of years. The animals consumed for food also consumed green grasses and leaves. The insects consumed green plants. In the ocean, krill eat green algae, sardines eat krill and so on up the food chain. It all starts with energy from the sun becoming plants on the land and algae in the ocean. These greens eventually become the omega-3 fatty acids that are so important. This is one reason why grass fed beef is better than grain fed beef. It's one reason why wild ocean fish are better than farm raised fish. It's one reason why we are encouraged to eat green foods.

I love Sovereign Silver First Aid Gel. We have used Sovereign Silver products in my home for nearly twenty years. It is the only silver product I use and the only one I recommend. This is one case where there is no other silver that I know of that meets this high standard. Most companies that sell silver products do not manufacture their own silver products. They are made by some other company. So you have to dig deep to compare silver products. Sovereign Silver has done the analysis of virtually every other silver product in the marketplace and you can literally see the difference. You can review all of this at the Sovereign Silver website.

In this interview with Neil E. Levin, we are looking at nutrients that can influence mood, stress, sleep and tension issues. We are also considering nutrients for memory, brain acuity and concentration. There are often multiple factors occurring at the same time. If you have everyday stress in your life, you may not be sleeping well. If you don’t sleep well, it’s hard to restore your brain and this may affect your mood. This could lead to nervousness. Any of these can affect your quality of life.

In this interview with Dr. Audrey Ross, ND, we will discuss the importance of B-vitamins in human health. We will also discuss the newer forms of B-vitamins known as Coenzyme B-vitamins. Dr. Ross will also discuss several nutrients that are surprisingly also forms of B-vitamins. This is a good example of making distinctions in the marketplace. Many companies don’t use any of the newer forms of nutrients. Country Life Vitamins uses all 7 of the currently available Coenzyme forms of B-vitamins and was one of the first companies to develop a Coenzyme B-complex supplement. This is why I wanted to speak with Dr. Ross about the role of B-vitamins and the importance of Coenzyme B-vitamins.

There has been a huge growing interest in collagen supplements and with good reason. Your cells exist in a collagen medium. Collagen provide the supporting structure for tissue throughout the body. This is most easily observed in bone, skin, hair and nails. These are obvious points where collagen deficiency can be seen. These are also the areas where the research has revealed very specific effects. But don't lose sight of the fact that if collagen is deficient in the obvious tissues of the body, then this deficiency exists throughout the body. Improvements in skin, hair and nails can be considered a sign that collagen status is improving throughout the body. For example, blood vessels need collagen for support and repair. OSA stimulates collagen production in the body.

The advent of refrigeration and food processing has resulted in less fermented foods in the diet giving us less beneficial bacteria. One solution to this lack of beneficial probiotic rich foods is to consume probiotic supplements.

Liposomes are basically a nutrient wrapped in a layer of fat (phosphatidylcholine, an important beneficial fat molecule). This is the same way that nutrition is delivered to babies through breast milk. Little fat bubbles fulled with nutrients. Liposomes are sometimes used with drugs to deliver drugs to specific targets in the body. Liposomes are also used to deliver nutrients into the body. Liposomes are better at carrying nutrients into the body and also delivering that nutrient into the cell than powders which make up most tablets and capsules. The phosphatidylcholine part of the liposome is then added as a healthy fat to cell membranes. These are important distinctions in the delivery system that determine how well your supplements are absorbed and utilized.

This has never been more relevant than today, when more people, young and old, are being diagnosed with brain disorders – such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, learning disorders, and dementias – than ever before.
In her new book, naturopathic doctor Karen Jensen explores the intricate communication network between the heart, the brain, and the gut. An increasing body of research suggests that these three “brains” all work together to determine our mental, emotional, and physical health. These three brains not only influence optimal brain function but the very essence of our identity.

Hemp is an important agricultural commodity around the world. Hemp played an important role in the growth and development of America as well. Until 1937 when the marijuana tax act criminalized all cannabis including industrial hemp. This is a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water. The road back to US hemp production is just gaining traction.
Hemp based products have been available in the US for probably a decade or so. Products like protein rich hemp seed, hemp oil (not to be confused with CDB Oil), hemp fiber for rope and fabrics have come into the marketplace. These products are made from hemp grown in other countries. Canada for example produces industrial hemp. So the challenge of making industrial hemp legal again in the US been formidable but doable.

One of the reasons that inflammation is so devastating is that chronic, highly active inflammation from one cause will adversely affect many other structures and functions in the body. One problem will lead to others. The drugs used to treat the disease will likely contribute to additional problems. The drugs cannot heal chronic inflammation. Only your body can do that and only if you put into place that which leads to healing. The good news is that even serious chronic condition can be dramatically improved in a few months with the serious application of healing lifestyle, diet, and supplementation.

I have often said companies need two things to succeed; image and substance. A company with image but no substance is selling you fluff. A company with substance and no image, gets lost because no one knows about them or what they do. You want to buy from companies that have substance first as that is the most important thing. It is when you want to look deeper into the substance of a company that the distinctions become clearer. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone and to prevent hypocalcemic tetany. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Vitamin D sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.

In this interview Dr. Hector Lopez will discuss the science, biology and application of PlusCBD Oil from CV Sciences. Not all CBD products are the same so remember that our discussion is only referencing this particular CBD.
The first part of our interview we discuss how CBD exerts its effects in the human body. Part of this discussion is on the endocannabinoid system. What is this system and what is the difference between endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids from hemp. What are the differences between CBD from hemp and THC from marijuana?
Secondly we will discuss the various applications for CBD for the average consumer. Perhaps one of the most important applications is for balancing neural health. It is the delicate balance between our nerves being calm and excited. It seems that CBD helps to normalize this balance.

In this interview Dr. Michael Murray will discuss the issues related to detox and cleansing. How does the body get rid of and/or neutralize harmful chemicals? Our bodies are amazing in the ways in which we deal with the many forms of assaults we face daily. What are the risks from a lifetime of exposure to hundreds, if not thousands, of chemicals? It is bad enough to understand the risks of one chemical in the body, but what about the synergistic effect of many chemicals together? No one knows. How many of today's health challenges are made worse by this exposure? Being naturally healthy requires that we consider how to avoid those toxins in the first place and how to get rid of the ones we have.

We will explore the science of NOW Respiratory Care Probiotic. Respiratory Care Probiotic is a probiotic combination featuring L. acidophilus NCFM®, which has been used in over 60 scientific studies. When used alone or in combination with B. lactis Bl-04, NCFM® has been shown to support a robust and balanced immune response to seasonal respiratory challenges, as well as to support an active lifestyle. NCFM® can rapidly populate the intestine and adhere to the intestinal wall, which is helpful for use during and after temporary disruptions to intestinal microbiota. Remember, nutrients are not drugs and do not treat diseases like respiratory allergies. Supplements like probiotics are natural bacteria that provide a functional benefit that supports respiratory health. Don't confuse nutritional support with drugs. They are not the same.

Maintaining an internal acid alkaline (pH) balance in the optimal range supports your bones and your body. Bones are the body’s “mineral storehouse”. Not only do bones provide strength, but they also house our mineral reserves and allow us to maintain optimum pH levels. Increasing the intake of alkalinizing minerals through an alkalinizing diet is the most fundamental and effective way to keep your pH within that all important health restoration zone (6.5 – 7.5).

What is a Probiotic?
The word Probiotic, according to the WHO (World Health Organization) means:
“Probiotics are living microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”
Pro means “For”
Biotic means “Life”
Probiotic means “Pro-Life”
In other words, probiotics are “good bacteria”. Your native intestinal micro flora is your indigenous probiotics. Probiotic supplements provide beneficial living bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobactia, that help to support digestive balance and digestive health.

There are many things which can interfere with sexual pleasure. One needs to do a careful and comprehensive look at what could be influencing factors. For an obvious example, there are many medications which can interfere in one way or another. Smoking and alcohol consumption can be a factor. Stress, anger, fear can certainly intrude and make it more difficult to sustain desire and performance. The point is that you have to consider other factors in your life and deal with them as well. A good nutritional product can help, but it cannot fix the other issues that are under your control. Strive to understand what are your influences and make changes where you can.

hsHgb A1c is a marker of insulin resistance and when it is elevated, that means the body is no longer properly managing blood sugar levels. When this number is elevated, that also strongly suggests a tendency toward higher inflammation throughout the body. The graph below represents the correlation between Hgb A1c levels, blood glucose levels, and 10 year survival probability. Research has shown that insulin resistance and prediabetes can frequently be improved with diet and exercise. Hgb A1C provides a reliable test to evaluate the effects of dietary and nutritional support programs.

There have been numerous scientific and clinical studies that have revealed the benefits of certain nutrients for eye health and specifically AMD and the history of some of these studies is revealing. The studies that more experts refer to is called AREDS and AREDS-2. (Age-Related Eye Disease Study). These two studies were sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). So these are serious studies. This action by DEA is signaling a hard-line position on all cannabis products. It is perhaps only a shot across the bow of the hemp industry at this moment, but it certainly has many concerned and considering how to respond to the potential threat. Just to be clear, this is not an enforcement issue. CBD continues to be available in the marketplace, but it's future is a little more obscure. For those who have discovered the benefits of CBD, then the concern that they may lose access to CBD is genuine. The risk that CBD may become an expensive pharmaceutical drug is possible.

Using just water, the results showed that e-cloths removed over 99% of bacteria, locking them away inside the cloths' fibers, where the bacteria stay until the cloths are rinsed. Further test show that, after a rinse with hot water, e-cloth reintroduced just 0.01% of bacteria back onto a sterile surface. Think about that. Wipe over 99% of bacteria off surfaces and wash it away with hot water. The cloth does not cross contaminate. All without any chemicals. And superior results for surfaces. You really should try them and see for yourself.

In this interview I will be speaking with Josée Fortin, who is a naturopath from Canada. We will explore one of A Vogels products Molkosan. Molkosan is a prebiotic made from a concentrated whey rich in L+ Lactic Acid. Molkosan is one of Alfred Vogel’s original remedies. Made from whey obtained from organic milk, Molkosan is rich in a substance known as L+ lactic acid which is now known to support the growth of good gut bacteria. In this way, it acts as a prebiotic. It does this by creating the proper and desirable colon pH. Proper pH = happy bacteria which will flourish better. This is different from prebiotic fibers which serve as food for the bacteria. This is more about the environment of the gut. It is also important to note that bad bacteria do not like L+ lactic acid.

What is Aged Garlic Extract?
GarlicMost people think garlic is garlic. Not so. AGE is the only truly odorless garlic supplement. The garlic used is grown organically and cultivated to enhance it's beneficial constituents and for quality standards. The garlic is cleaned and sliced and then aged in stainless steel tanks for up to 20 months. In this process the garlic is changed. The harsh compounds become mild and odorless and are converted to the beneficial natural compounds that are responsible for AGE's unique properties. AGE and it's various constituents have been the subject of over 750 scientific publications around the world including Japan, the U.S., South America and Europe since its development in 1955.

In this interview Dr. Pande will discuss some of the issues with probiotics in general. If you are an informed consumer then you know that there are many products that are low quality and low effectiveness that exist in the marketplace. We have discussed these issues in previous podcasts. The solution is to understand the distinctions and seek out high quality products with clinical science to validate their claims.
In this case we are discussing the clinical evidence for IBS and Lactospore. Lactospore is also a unique probiotic in the manner in which it protects itself and that it is heat stable. It can even be used in baked goods and still remain viable. That's a first for me. Heat is usually destructive to probiotics. So this is an interesting exploration of a novel probiotic. Dr. Pande explains this very well.

Inflammation is not a disease. It is a result of the body's attempt to heal. When we use targeted nutrition, we are giving the body the specific nutrients to facilitate repair. Dr. Jaffe's research has led to our understanding of the role of specific antioxidants for inflammation repair.
"Inflammation is like a smoldering fire that eventually eats through the fiber of our being. Because it affects the connective tissue infrastructure upon which our bodies are built, repair deficits can occur in any part of the body that is stressed, lacking in nutrients, or more exposed to toxins. This makes inflammation an underlying co-morbidity for many ills.

In this interview Natasha will introduce us to the industry adopted probiotic standards. As you examine this issue you will gain the knowledge about how to judge and choose a probiotic. Natasha will explain how and why these standards are important and how consumers can make judgments based on those standards. If consumers don't know what to look for then it is nearly impossible to make an informed choice. This is a challenge for all consumers of nutritional products. We have discussed this several times here at HealthQuestPodcast.com. Until the FDA has corralled the cheaters, consumers must become wary and educated. Good companies with great products are out there. You need to learn the difference. Good companies want to earn your trust because they do everything possible to created safe and effective products. Bad companies, or even careless companies don't care about quality, effectiveness or even safety.

This interview is largely about the new approach to multi-vitamins. Dr. LowDog and MegaFood worked long and hard to create products that will meet most of your basic nutritional needs. Dr. Erin Stokes will discuss the rationale behind the formulas. The approach is basically this; your multi-vitamin is two per day and is age and gender specific. There is no calcium in the multi-vitamin as calcium is impossible to get in significant amounts in most multis. MegaFood has a separate calcium bone formula that is designed to let you adjust the calcium to your specific needs and to get enough calcium to make a difference in the formula. Separating the multi from the calcium helps ensure you will get the best amount of both.

In this interview with Tom, we are going to discuss metabolic enzymes (also known as therapeutic enzymes). I am certain that many less consumers know about or understand this part of the enzyme story. This also surprises me because the research on metabolic enzymes goes back 50 years. I have known about and used some form of enzymes for nearly 40 years and we always have some in our natural medicine chest. I consider them to be a very important adjunct nutrient for pain and inflammation. Metabolic enzymes are those enzymes that are taken for purposes other than digestion. For that reason metabolic enzymes are taken between meals on an empty stomach.

The nutritional products industry is rapidly changing. In some ways it is a victim of its own success. Those who have been in the industry a long time, like me with over 40 years, have wanted good nutrition to become widely accepted. Now that better nutrition is being embraced by a much larger community, we have many new participants in the marketplace, from more consumers, to more mass market and internet access, more product manufacturers, more raw material suppliers and so on. The business of nutrition is changing in ways that are not obvious to the average consumer. In this podcast, I will discuss some of the important issues that I think you should know about. They are issues that affect us now and will shape the future. There is much good to discuss and celebrate in the world of nutrition. There is also the bad to be concerned about and avoided. NattokinaseIn this interview, Dr. Holsworth will discuss the origins of nattokinase and the emerging science that reveals the benefits. The basic issue here is that fibrin is the factor in our blood that forms blood clots. Too much fibrin thickens the blood increasing one's risk of cardiovascular disease. Consumption of nattokinase has been shown to enhance fibrinolytic activity leading to reduced fibrin in the blood. Nattokinase has also shown benefits for blood pressure support. These are important distinctions that determine how well your supplements are absorbed and utilized.

Some people experience an increase in LDL cholesterol when taking EPA + DHA fish oil. It is this rise in LDL that has doctors and researchers puzzled. Why is this the case and more importantly how can this outcome be influenced by the nutrients we take. Again, we can look to the science for answers.
Researchers wanted to know if either EPA alone or DHA alone as nutritional intervention would provide different results. The research has shown that EPA alone will lower triglycerides without increasing LDL. These effects were seen in several studies and so now there is growing consensus that EPA alone is more appropriate for some.

Infants are bathed in protective, beneficial microflora as they pass through their mother’s birth canal. As a result, babies delivered vaginally are bathed with friendly, protective Bifido bacteria. In contrast, babies delivered by caesarian section (C-section) become bathed in the bacteria from their environment. When this occurs, babies lose out on the benefits that B. infantis supplies.
