The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life, not for the sake of excellence but in an effort to be seen as equal in a society that sees little value in her and believes she's undeserving of access to meaningful resources and success. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.
Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss the origins, signs, and some of the adverse mental and physical health impacts of the black superwoman complex.

Veterans are at increased risk of committing suicide within the first year of leaving active duty and suffering job loss within 2 years after becoming a civilian. This is in direct contrast to the expectations of both veterans and employers, who expect great workplace success but are often mistaken and disappointed. Why are veterans more likely to fail in the civilian workplace the more successful they are in the military? What active duty supports and resources are lacking in civilian life? How do we—the loved ones, community, and businesses—help facilitate their successful transition to employment?
U.S. Navy Captain (retired) William Toti, author of “From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership,” discusses these questions and offers solutions to facilitate veterans’ successful transition to civilian employment.

Sometimes we turn ourselves inside out to be who people want us to be because we’re afraid people won’t like us, may think we’re selfish, and may reject us. Feeling our feelings can be uncomfortable. Imagine being told by 5 neurologists that you were going to die from a brain tumor in 6-12 months, and there was nothing they could do to help you. Faced with this shocking, devastating diagnosis at 33-years old, my special guest, Sandi Gold, was racked by fear; but in the next moment, she was enveloped by “this incredible love” energy coming from her art work. At that moment, she chose love over fear, chose love energy to guide her healing and lead her to health practitioners that listened and supported her approach, and chose to trust her body’s wisdom to heal. Sandi used love to guide her in her quest to live life to the fullest.
Sandi Gold repeatedly achieved what doctors defined as the impossible. Almost 40 years later, she shares her healing journey from brain illness, side effects of her life-saving treatment, and family trauma in her new book, “I Chose Love.” Ms. Gold is also an artist, a certified expressive arts specialist, and was featured on ABC’s News Show 20/20, profiled in People Magazine, The New York Times, Boston Globe, USA Today and in hundreds of newspapers throughout the country. She’s been interviewed on National Public Radio and Connecticut Public Radio and been a speaker at academic institutions, including Brown University, and many hospitals and schools.

Meditation and mindfulness can literally save your life!
Typically, men don’t want help for mental health problems due to stigma; and for those who want help, it can take months to get in to be seen by someone. So, what are they supposed to do in the meantime?
With my special guest, Dr. Obari Cartman, PhD, a psychologist and author, we discuss:
The divorce rate in the U.S. is still greater than 50% for first marriages and greater than 70% for third marriages. While divorce is painful and may bring up feelings of loss and grief for some, it’s a train wreck for others!

It’s tough to win the game when you don’t know what the game is or what the rules are. You can succeed despite barriers and setbacks when you know the rules and have the right mindset and tools.

The history of African-Americans is complex, nuanced, rich and full—one of courage, strength, and resilience side by side an ugly, painful history of a proud, diverse people’s unyielding struggle for liberation against the yoke of inhumanity. Our resistance and refusal to submit to oppression beckon us to embrace black history as a journey of power over pain.

Expand your mental perspective, and celebrate the power, strength, resilience, and achievements of the African-American community found in an empowered black history narrative.
Loss is a part of the human condition, and grief can occur around any kind of loss, not just the loss of a loved one. So, why do we have so much difficulty accepting death, even when we know it’s expected from an existing illness, even though we know everyone dies. Why are so many stuck in grief?
Lyn Prashant, PhD is CEO and Founder of Integrative Grief Therapy. In the Art of Degriefing Part 2, Dr. Prashant and I discuss non-death losses and approaches to transform your grief and get unstuck. Again, according to Dr. Prashant, "Love is not the reason we grieve... IT'S ATTACHMENT."

There is a spiraling crisis of African-American male teachers and students in this country. African-American boys and young men are suspended and expelled at much higher rates than their peers of other races, and up to 50% of children expelled from preschool are African-American boys, even though they’re only 20% of the students.
My special guest, Lamarr Darnell Shields, PhD, the Founder and Senior Director of Education and Innovation at the Cambio Group, and former professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education discusses this shocking trend, causes, and solutions that help African-American boys and young men express their brilliance, including the necessity of recruiting and retaining African-American male teachers.

Each and every one of us want to matter! We want to be seen for who we truly are, and we want to be heard. When we feel invisible, it’s painful! We tell our stories in an effort to be understood, to be valued, to know that we matter. We tell the story of our loved ones and the society for the same reasons and to leave a legacy of our values, standards, accomplishments, hope, and resiliency for the inevitable hard times and losses. Storytelling enables us to see ourselves in each other. Through this bridge of connection and understanding, we can overcome differences, transcend indifference, and see our shared humanity.

· The significant impact of our stories upon those who hear them and its generational legacy
· His motivation to write stemmed in part from the false perceptions and narratives about African-American men

· Storytelling is one of the most effective ways to make visible the humanity of the marginalized or “those who linger in the shadows”
· The need to tell our stories when mainstream media remains silent

“Write your story. Tell your story because no one is more qualified to tell your story than you are. Tell your story.” ~ John W. Fountain

Many women strive for excellence every day for themselves and their families. The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life to prove she isn’t inferior or inadequate and that she's deserving of the same equal opportunities and access to meaningful resources and success as her white male counterparts. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.
Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss:

· How this system conditions all women to meet the needs of others while ignoring their own
· How the recent resignation of former Harvard President, Claudine Gay, the only African-American female in Harvard’s history, illustrates her excellence wasn’t enough to prove her worthiness nor shield her from false accusations of plagiarism, and how she was discredited by a wealthy donor whose wife had actually committed plagiarism
· How does any of this apply to and have meaning for the average, hardworking woman
· How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources is designed to keep most Americans impoverished because the color that matters most is the color green
· If you don’t like you, you don’t value you and won’t take care of you. You have to like you to exercise self-compassion and take care of yourself.
· How your wellness super powers help you achieve and sustain health and wellness, including weight loss.
