Welcome to the Out of Privilege podcast with Dr. Byron Burkhalter, where we talk about issues of racism, white privilege and the role they play in current affairs. We take an historical and sociological look at various issues and how they have laid the foundation for the systemic racism that the United States in particular is battling today. In an earlier podcast, we talked about whiteness as a political coalition. However, the census data show that white as a category will no longer be a standalone majority of the U.S. population by 2042. In anticipation of that, political strategists have been working to weaponize the changing demographics of the country and weaponize the insecurity that generates among whites to try and maintain power. In this week’s episode, we talk about what this type of racialized strategy means for this year’s election and why it is perhaps more worrying for the election in 2024.
Is white privilege preventing us from living up to the founding ideals of this country? Does it take us further away from each other and the community building required for us to realize the true American dream? In today’s podcast, we talk about the first article in the 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones and what it is going to take for us to understand how to love this country in all its glory along with all its flaws.
Football players being booed for peaceful protests, the shooting of two police officers in LA and its impact on support for the Black Lives Matter movement, and anti-racism education being called un-American by the President -- these are just a few of the topics connected to race making news this week. In today’s episode, Byron offers perspective on each of these and how they perpetuate racism in the country today.
In this week’s episode, Out of Privilege co-founder Wendy Apperson talks with me and two other women about what it means to be a mother to bi-racial children. Two of us are white and the other is Black. We share our different perspectives based on our experiences and those of our children, the fears we have in today’s environment and our hopes for the future. While every story is unique, there are some common themes that emerge as we help our children navigate a racially charged world.
In today’s episode, Dr. Burkhalter shares an historical perspective on the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that was put in place to enforce the 15th amendment to the US Constitution, ratified by the states nearly 100 years earlier. In the midst of an election year, we talk about why it is necessary, how it was gutted and what it means for so many people in this country to encounter still today barrier after barrier just to be able to do something the constitution guarantees them the right to do.
In today’s episode, Out of Privilege co-founder Wendy Apperson joins in discussion with Lisa and Adam, two individuals who have embarked on a journey toward anti-racism. They share what drew them onto the path, what they have discovered and their advice for others starting the journey.
In today’s episode, Out of Privilege co-founders Wendy Apperson and Byron Burkhalter talk about helping individuals embrace and embark on a journey of self-discovery on the path toward anti-racism. That starts with confronting personal complicity with white supremacy head on in what can be a very vulnerable and shameful experience.
In today’s episode, we talk about the history of affirmative action and why it is making a resurgence today as the board of regents for the University of California schools have voted to reinstate it amid a decline in diversity among their student population.
In today’s episode, we examine how whiteness is actually a political group driving influence in ways that perpetuate white supremacy. While the initial establishment of this political group was intentional, the maintenance of that group has become more of a habit.
In today’s episode, we talk about what it means to take a sociological approach to addressing racism in corporate environments and how that differs from what a lot of individuals and organizations are trying to do to create a more inclusive environment.
