Here’s how I use Bark with my own kids and why it’s been such a game changer: (try bark right here https://www.bark.us/?ref=SIMPLIFY)

Comprehensive Monitoring: Bark monitors texts, emails, YouTube, and even 30+ social media platforms. But the best part? It flags potential issues like cyberbullying, inappropriate content, online predators, or signs of depression or anxiety. I can’t tell you how relieved I was when Bark caught a concerning text exchange before it became a bigger issue. Yes, you can monitor kids text messages, with a degree of privacy for them.

Custom Alerts: This is where the app shines for moms who don’t have time to micromanage every app or conversation. Bark sends you a notification only if something needs your attention. That means I don’t have to waste time scrolling through endless messages or posts—it’s already done for me!

Balance Between Safety and Privacy: One thing I’m always conscious of is how I approach my kids’ privacy. I want them to have freedom, but I also want to protect them. Bark strikes the perfect balance by not spying on every detail but giving me enough insight when something’s off. It helps create trust between you and your kids, so they don’t feel like you’re constantly “big brother-ing” their every move.

In my opinion Bark is much better than Qustudio or Famisafe based on how dedicated they are to keeping kids safe online.

What kind of phone is a Bark Phone? In short, it's an Android. The longer version you can find here. https://www.bark.us/?ref=SIMPLIFY

Now, I know that phrase, “throwing everything I own away,” can sound a little drastic. But I’m here to tell you that in 2013, as a family of five, we did exactly that. We packed up a single suitcase for each of us and moved from Alaska to Florida, leaving behind all the clutter. It was a monumental shift for my family, one that I had no idea would lead to such profound mental health benefits.

Let me walk you through how we did it, why we did it, and what it changed for me, especially as a mom.

► 💻ONE OF THE VERY FIRST THINGS I DID AFTER I DECLUTTERED WAS START THERAPY. HERE'S A GREAT ONLINE COUNSELING TO TRY:

https://onlinetherapy.go2cloud.org/aff_c?offer_id=2&aff_id=4059

There are a lot of online therapy platforms out there, and this one I trust. I will be completing an online-therapy.com review shortly, and doing it in comparison to my betterhelp review. It's hard to find an online counselor you can trust, and I know recommendations like this can be really helpful. Therapy online has become very normal, and useful, especially for moms.

Listen in as I share my ever-evolving journey with daily household chores, specifically the dishwashing routine that has shifted to accommodate my family's current work-from-home and schooling dynamic. I explore how life's different seasons demand flexibility in our routines, and I'll walk you through our current dish cycle which includes a nightly reset by my diligent 12-year-old son, a strategic midday run, and my morning unloading ritual. I also stress the importance of having a manageable number of dishes to keep the kitchen chaos at bay and how sustainable practices can be achieved through self-correcting habits, such as avoiding disposable paper plates.

Moving from the kitchen to the entryway, I offer insights on organizing shoes and beauty products, especially for those with large families. You'll get a glimpse into my personal approach to managing footwear for my family of six, where each person is allocated a daily pair and a seasonal pair to minimize clutter. I also talk about how we handle the allure of adorable, non-essential shoes for the little ones, balancing indulgences with spatial and financial realities. For more tailored solutions, I highlight the creative ideas from the Motherhood Simplified group, underlining the benefits of intentional purchases and storage solutions. Tune in for these practical tips that could revolutionize the way you manage your household's daily grind.

We all know that even the tidiest homes aren't immune to the occasional socks on the floor or misplaced keys, and that's perfectly human. But what if you could reset your living space in just 20 to 30 minutes? I share insights into maintaining a 'clutter threshold' and the behaviors that contribute to our daily disarray. Dishes -

Papers/school and art work

It becomes clutter when...

It doesn't fit in to the space you have, or is beyond your clutter threshold.

This episode is all about how I do clothes for my kids - and the people I am 100% responsible for clothing.

I have mastered clothes decluttering. Partly out of necessity, but in hindsight it's because once my subconscious experienced such a different way of existing that supported the life I wanted MOST, it became second nature. I wanted a simple, easy, fun, life. And never ending laundry made that harder.

  1. I tell them openly about why I am getting rid of my own things. Today I got rid of some things and told her it was because I didn't have time to use it any more, and someone else would love to use it.

  2. I talk about why sometimes we have to get rid of their things - like they're too small, they're worn out.

  3. I talk about all the things we have and love and why we have them, how we use them and how much we appreciate them. My idea behind this is that it’s normal to talk about what we keep, why we keep it and have contrast for things we don’t and why we don’t keep it.

She still struggles to let things go, but today when I told her I was getting something that the entire family really thought was pretty cool, it ultimately is something I was keeping for the ideal version of myself I want to be but just am not right now.

I know I couldn't tell her that much detail so I just kept it at "we don't have time to use it and someone else will really love to use it!" and she was satisfied. It also helped me let it go too.

  1. We did it because it was the best option for us at the time. Logistically it made the most sense.

  2. It was really hard. I had no concept about how much we had, or how much fit into a suitcase.

  3. No one wanted my stuff. Straight up, no one wanted it, needed it or would take it.

  4. Would I do it again? Under those circumstances, absolutely. Just because? Probably not.

  5. Do I think others should do it? Maybe. What I think people should really take away from it are these two things: 1. you're going to have to trash things. 2. You're going to get familiar with what and how much you really have. And it will surprise you.

You've been around for a while now and have maybe seen how that little time above will turn into a big red "Oh no, you missed this opportunity!".

And it's because I know that the moms who have the most decluttering success are decisive, and a boundary on time is a big motivator for being decisive.

Think of this as your first lesson in DECIDING that you will declutter.

And not only will you be deciding to declutter, you will also be deciding on things like this:

--> Giving your kids better opportunities for creativity, play, and responsibility in an age appropriate way.

--> Saving money because you have clarity on what toys are worth buying (or not) AND knowing what clothing you have, so you know what you need

--> Less overstimulation while playing, less overwhelm when cleaning it up (for you AND your kids).

--> Reducing your never ending to do list down to what you can actually manage

--> Leading your family toward simplicity, fun and ease instead of forever nagging them and resenting them for not helping out more

--> Feeling peaceful in your home, instead of overwhelmed

--> Excited to have guests, instead of embarrassed

Come with me as I show you exactly how I decluttered, and have kept my home clutter free with 5 kids for almost a decade!!

If you're still struggling with...

--> Moving clutter from place to place inside your home

The Decluttering Intro Pack is for you.

--> Overstimulation in your own home

The Decluttering Intro Pack is for you.

--> Not being able to find things in your home

The Decluttering Intro Pack is for you.

--> Spending your days cleaning up the same messes over and over again

The Decluttering Intro Pack is for you.

Don't miss out on this opportunity. You owe it to yourself and your family.

Get the Decluttering Intro Pack now.

See you in there!

This is the top misunderstanding I see moms have that holds them back from decluttering.

Here's the problem with being introduced to a totally new idea or concept:

People don't know how to understand it, and often don't trust it will actually work - or last.

Especially these days where we're exposed to trends that come and go in days.

No one understood what the Nugget couch was when it first came out - it's a couch your kids can rearrange AND it's super comfy? I don't understand. Then you saw it, and maybe got one (or two) and were like OMG THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!

The same is true when moms learn about Decluttering Simplified and thinking it's "just another checklist" or thinking that decluttering is something you should just know how to do without any true skills being taught to you.

If decluttering was as easy as piecing together random checklists, and just getting rid of you stuff, we all would have done it by now right?

(By the way.. how are those random checklists, and attempts to do it on your own working out? Not so great I'm guessing, I see it all the time and everyone does it at some point!)

Haphazardly trying to declutter with patchwork information you've found in random places and just moving things from place to place indefinitely isn't how you declutter a home, and keep it that way.

What does?

Implementing a step by step process that follows tried and true decluttering strategies that both remove your clutter, AND gets to the root of incoming clutter.

It’s called Decluttering Simplified because I have truly made decluttering as simple as possible for you in this program - especially if you are a mom. You know nothing about motherhood is simplified, so you need a program that IS.

It’s a full approach to clutter in your home - including reducing what comes in, managing what you keep, and learning to let things go when it’s time. It’s not just a checklist to get rid of things once because you will always have things coming in, which means they will always be going out.

It’s all about learning the things about managing a home and stuff as a parent that you NEVER learned growing up. It’s transforming the way you raise your kids and teach them about consumption, personal responsibility and decision making, and caring for what you have and how you spend your time and energy.

Decluttering Simplified teaches you to value your time, your energy and advocate for yourself and ultimately get to the root of ALL waste. And teaches you how to balance your needs with the needs of your family so you aren’t the only one doing the work inside of the home.

If that sounds like you, then go get into Decluttering Simplified. You don't want to miss this opportunity to enroll!

Edit

*By the way, I truly mean “If this is you.” There are PLENTY of people who want to cut corners or just organize the clutter in their home. Those are NOT the people we want in the Decluttering Simplified.

There’s work to be done. But if you’re ready to commit to it, I am here to give you all of the steps and support you need to make it happen.

I was so surprised at how well all of the tiny projects in the course built so much momentum. I made progress WAY faster than I expected, and I have been able to keep the excess down.

Listen in on what it was like when I decluttered my home with 3 kids, by myself while working outside the home 10 hours a day.

Episode links:

How to make your home your home peaceful, creative and easy to clean up

For show notes and resources mentioned in today's episode, head to https://motherhoodsimplified.com/3-reasons-decluttering-cant-wait

Let me tell you about the worst day I had when I decluttered our home in 2013 down to what fit into our suitcases.

The general circumstances are this:

I had 3 kids, 7, 4 & 2 years old.

I owned a small preschool where I cared for children for 5 families during the hours of 7am-5pm. Which meant for 10 hours a day I was on site 30 minutes from home.

My husband was living 4,500 miles away in our new home state of Florida (I was in Alaska).

We had one month to have everything we own fit into a suitcase, and with such short notice I had very little help available for childcare or decluttering (a big physical task).

So, those circumstances alone are like WTF impossible, right?

I got it done, so definitely possible, but totally bananas.

One night after I put the kids to bed I was supposed to be sorting through piles (again) to coordinate selling, and pack away for either donation or the dump.

I had started my period, that day every single kid at the school (and my own) must have been taken over by some full moon or something, I don't know and I just could. not. move.

Literally laid in the middle of my floor and just stared at all the work I had to do and got not a single thing done that night.

Not only did I get nothing done, but I cried.

For so many reasons I cried. Fear of letting all of our stuff was the biggest reason. I thought I was making an irresponsible and terrible mistake (it wasn't).

As well as a whole lot of other emotions like resentment, grief over leaving the only place I had ever called home, and worry about the impact it would have on my kids.

The good news is that I was able to do it. And I came out ahead - so far ahead that almost a decade later I am STILL reaping the benefits of that experience.

A big part of you is probably wondering if you can declutter your home and finally be able to walk into it without seeing all the unfinished work you have to do.

And my answer is, YES, you can. You absolutely can.

Even if you have kids at home, work a lot, don't have a supportive day to day partner, worry about not having enough or whatever it might be for you.

I have been able to simplify my decluttering process into one that works for moms no matter their circumstances.

I did it under super extreme conditions and while yours might be different, they're still workable IF you have the right system and plan in place.

And IF you are willing to take that first step.

And more on that in just a bit

But first I have another story to tell you tomorrow - so check back tomorrow to check that out, you're going to love it.

I’m a highly empathic and compassionate person. Every personality test I take proves that time and time again, so know that what I am about to say comes from a deep place of knowing that sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is tell a truth. Here goes...

If you don't declutter your home, and prioritize clearing out the stuff that is causing you excessive and unnecessary stress, burden and feelings of anxiety...

Your one season of motherhood will flash before your eyes and you will miss so much of it.

And not only that, all the beautiful gifts you want to give your children like your time, patience and life lessons that will serve them as adults will fall short.

And if you are currently overwhelmed by the heaviness clutter brings to your as a mother, you are not alone and nothing is wrong with you.

You have just been born in a time where that is NORMAL and accepted for mothers.

Everywhere you look it's buy more, get more, you need BETTER stuff. It's gifted to you, and it's not only a conscious message we get... it is deeply embedded into our society right now.

No other generation has faced the intensity that we do now with social media, a total restructuring of pretty much every major aspect of our society, family roles and pressure to live a highlight reel.

That's not your fault

But it is your responsibility to change it once you're aware of it. So that you can step over to the other side where:

You can live in a way that feels like you are deeply caring for your family, yourself, your home and everything in it, especially the people.

You have the patience your kids need from you (most days).

You raise kids who WANT to come home after they’re grown.

Undo generational habits and stories you carried into your life that you don’t want your kids to carry into their adulthood.

Value your time and energy and balance that with all of the unpredictable and urgent needs of motherhood - without the guilt.

Release the resentment and heaviness you feel in your home and toward your family because of pointless messes.

See a clear direction for your life, how you’ll be able to support and encourage your kids in finding their own direction instead of being all consumed by the daily busy work.

Be able to just walk into a room, and relax instead of seeing piles of stuff and work you need to do.

Live in a home where it’s easy to get help from your family because it’s simple enough to manage and still has all the things everyone want’s and needs.

All of that sounds like not just a dream, but like a deeply fulfilling season of motherhood right? Well, it's true and possible for your real life.

Take a minute to think about what all of that would REALLY be like for you.

Pull out a piece of paper and make a list of all the things that would be different for you if you only had HALF of those benefits of decluttering I just laid out above.

How much easier and more fun would being a mom be for you on a daily basis?

Spend some time thinking about it, because I have something fun O coming for you tomorrow. Even better hit reply, and let me know what you're most excited about when you declutter!

Today's episode is knowing the signs of what decluttering in maintenance mode looks like. In Decluttering Simplified you figure out what this looks like for you so you can recognize it and work toward it.

How is your time spent differently? How do you feel? Etc. And then we set up measurable milestones

But once those start to happen for you, how do you stay there?

Maintenance mode for me looks like being able to pick up at the end of the night and not fall behind on things like laundry, dishes and also being able to do the thigs that matter to me - cooking, budgeting, time on myself etc.

Once I notice those things slipping I know that it's time to declutter again.

Use Decluttering Simplified to get to, and then maintain your clutter free home!

Have you ever gotten to the end of the day and just laid there totally exhausted by the day and you just can't seem to figure out what you actually did all day? Me too.

You have already spent the day cleaning and catching up but there are still dishes in the sink, laundry to be done and once again everyone in your house seems to have left their stuff all over for you to clean up? Sometimes I just can't do another freakin' chore.

Even if I know it needs to be done. If someone makes me go behind my kids and clean up those tiny pieces of string, straws and cardboard scraps they left on the kitchen table again I will cry (insert bad straw that broke the mama camel's back joke here ).

When I Googled "how to make my kids stop making a mess" it told me this... Keep only what you need in all areas of your home Simplify your kids toy collection

Each and every mom out there feels the hefty weight of trying to keep up on the messes that come with raising kids and that will affect their energy levels and mental/emotional state.

Add in the need to declutter on top of manage these daily messes, and there is a whole new set of decisions that can affect us and our time we have to do anything else in a day. Everyone at some point is going to question if they're doing enough, but moms have it on so many levels that I want to make sure you know that you are not alone when you question what you actually got done at the end of the day.

Especially if it feels like that answer is nothing. Of course we can make to do lists, chore charts and check them off so that we can feel good about our productivity....and yet there will never be a time where we don't have days where we feel like we still fell short and forgot something or didn't pay enough attention to our kids.

Every time you question yourself know that there are a million moms out there feeling the same pain as you. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I can't give you a world where you will always have the energy to do all the things in a day, but I can make sure you are surrounded by people who tell you that even when certain decisions don't give you the results you wanted that it will all be ok.

That is the moment when friend Krista, (not coach Krista) will be there to tell you to just go to bed and leave the messes for tomorrow... and then the next day (when you are ready) I'll be there to help you figure out how to clear some major clutter to get chronically caught up!

I hope this gives you the gentle nudge to trust yourself to make a decision today even if it isn't contributing to having a more simplified home today, but I do know that you are a wonderful mother who isn't perfect (none of us are) and that's ok. We don't need to be perfect, we just need to be bold in our decisions, and compassionate in our forgiveness of ourselves. Talk soon,

Check out last week's episode called "the right way to declutter" and it will help identify why you may be experiencing difficulty letting go of your things. And then here's my number one top to help you move past this guilt:

  1. Do something small. Anything small. Get rid of it, let it go. See how it feels after you are done. In the moment it may be hard, but long term it is fully worth it. And I know you believe that on some level because you are here listening to this podcast WANTING to declutter but being held back for some reason. That's okay.

  2. Give yourself some time to reflect on how it went for you. It sucked in the moment, but now with your new experience you can see that nothing bad happened. No one was hurt. You feel relief, have more time and energy, etc.

  3. Now is the point where you can alleviate that guilt and transform it into something else. You likely feel guilty because you believe you are contributing to a problem (may or may not be true) but I do know that once you decultter you have the ability to be a part of a solution rather than just feel like the problem. Maybe that solution is being financially responsible within your family, serving your community better and being involved or helping creating sustainable living solutions for our planet. You just can't be a huge problem solver when you're so bogged down in the day to day, even if the day to day is getting stuck on what and how to declutter.

The ONLY right way to declutter is to ultimately get the stuff out of your home and possession for good. I say possession because a storage unit means it's still within your care and responsibility.

Some things that hold people back from actually making this progress and final decision are:

  1. Not wanting to be wasteful. The waste was in the purchase. the money and resource. Decluttering is not inherently wasteful. Unless you are just buying things so you can declutter them, which is another conversation.
  2. Wanting to redistribute it to people who can use it. People don't need clutter. And we already live in a society with a surplus of things we don't need, and a shortage of a lot of things we DO need like community and financial literacy.
  3. Wanting to get your money's worth.

There are a lot of different intensities to grief, so here is the definition real quick: a deep sorrow, or less intense; trouble or annoyance.

Ways you might not know you are grieving as you declutter:

  1. Closing a chapter of your life (baby stages, relationships ending, career, old life, old body)
  2. When moving, a deep loss of more than just stuff. The walls of your home, your community, comfort zone, familiarity, scenery.
  3. Fear of losing memories, security, people.
  4. A childhood wound trigger - financial history, home life, insecurity, memories.

Acknowledge your grief. The intensity can stop you in your tracks, but that doesn't stop the grief. The season of life is still over, the relationships, you are still moving. Acknowledge it, articulate it (with a friend or therapist, or FB group).

Then, find the things you are looking forward to next. This isn't fake it til you make it. This is sitting with the shit and then getting yourself out of it. Because the other choice is to just sit there indefinitely.

Kelly Haller (aka the Tidy Rebel) and I sit and jam out on our thoughts on anti-minimalism and how to actually declutter in a way that feels good to you and your family.

Minimalism and decluttering can be a trend, and just another thing we feel we should do and that defeats the entire point to us.

Enroll in Decluttering Simplified Have you ever experienced decision fatigue? Click here for the full transcription of this episode

We can make at most 100 excellent, high level decisions before we begin to max out our brain power. As mothers we simply do not have the time or energy to waste on insignificant decisions.

Organization is often sold to us as a solution for our decision fatigue. I am here to bust this myth for you.

When you organize the stuff in your home, you are really just making a series of decisions on how to store things.

It’s essentially attempting to create a system for your decision making. The problem is that when you organize your clutter you still have the same amount of decisions to make on an every day basis.

When you choose to declutter, you make the decision once and are done with it forever.

Here are some real life examples of decluttering and decision fatigue. One mom inside of the course I created, Decluttering Simplified said this:

“I finally chose to declutter this book, and now I am free. I never have to make a decision on it again.”

The book she is referring to was one that she had been trying to read for a year. It sat on her counter, her nightstand and daily she was required to make a decision about it.

To read it, or not read it? Bring it up to her bedroom, or not? Spend time with her family, or read her book.

She even brought it on a family vacation and made decisions on it while on vacation.

What she realized is the book required her to make many decisions almost daily. Never was the decision to actually read, and benefit from the book.

The way she explained her decision fatigue was so clear. Here is another example from a mom inside of the group. This mom decluttered a cupcake stand she never used, but made many decisions on before that.

The cupcake stand represented the mom she thought she should be. It sat on her counter for a long while until she needed the counter space back.

She had to decide where to put it. Which led to a series of decisions made on how to rearrange he pantry so it fit.

It fit in there for a while, but was mostly in the way.

Which inevitably led to her needing to make another decision on where to keep the cupcake stand.

Organize a different cabinet? Declutter some tupperware to make room? Something else?

Ultimately, after a long series of decisions about a cupcake stand that was never used she decluttered it. Now, it might not be a cupcake stand for you that is consuming all of your decision power. It can be anything – nail clippers, sunblock, toys, shoes, or a sippy cup for your kids.

The point I hope you get from this episode is that your clutter requires, and demands a lot from you. In very seemingly small ways that add up over time.

Decluttering is also a series of decisions you need to make.

What do you do first, next and last?

Where do you take the items?

Should you sell them? For how much?

When should you declutter? Do you include the kids, and how?

You can experience decision fatigue in decluttering as well, so the less things you need to figure out yourself the more time and energy you have to spend actually decluttering.

Which is exactly what I offer inside of Decluttering Simplified. Not only do you have the full step by step plan available to you, but you also have accountability and support in implementing the content.

Check it out and enroll right here!

This episode is all about why we are so emotionally invested into our clutter, and how we can break free from it.

-our childhood wounds are being relived, whatever those are and it can be the OPPOSITE of your childhood wounds

-avoiding your home because it's too overwhelming to be there. So we find other things to do, places to go, things to have.

-buying things because it was a good deal and we had FOMO, scarcity based mindset and feeling like we will be deprived or not have enough

-we become victims of expert marketers telling us well be a good mom, our kids will be happier/smarter/more well rounded

-we want to keep up with trends and the joneses. To feel accepted/included.

So how do we move past it?

-the most effective thing, dive into your decluttering with a critical mind. If we declutter only from emotion that's when we regret it, or get rid of the wrong things.

You can start small, and you can start simple. Sometimes we think we have to go from where we are now to the extreme opposite that we probably don’t even want. You have time/ there are so many steps between where you’re at now, and white walls one spoon and 2 outfits AND

You can get support in this

-start to let the layers of stuff go. See the relief you feel, and how safe it really is to declutter.

-take a step back and ask critically "why is it hard for me to let this go", "realistically what will happen if I let this go" what is the WORST case scenario.

-create voids in your home and life so that you can fill it up with something better. We fear white space not realizing those are the spaces for the things we DO want to have grow.

This the ACTUAL end result of decluttering, spoiler alert. It isn't just a clean house.

It's the ability to actually see your life for what it is, and what is/is not working.

It's basically standing there as a naked and exposed version of yourself. I don't lead with this because honestly, it's not the sexy microwaveable answer people want.

There is a lot of truth in how your internal world mirrors your external world.

Whether its falsely curated, or a total mess or something in between.

Ways it does not make you happy

  1. It doesn’t erase your past experiences and traumas

  2. It doesn’t change your belief systems about yourself and your life

  3. It doesn’t nurture relationships

Ways Decluttering makes you happy:

  1. It gives you relief

  2. It makes your days easier

  3. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and pride in your home

  4. It gives you time and energy for relationships

  5. It eliminates a lot of the things that lead us to perpetually judge and shame ourselves

  6. It breathes life into us

It's stepping into a new normal. One where you have space, energy and clarity. Boundaries. Tolerance for only what serves you

It's being able to see the ROOT issues of your life and then address them.

After you've decluttered is when the real work begins. Not to say decluttering isn't work, its about establishing boundaries to protect what you do want. The example of me absolutely freaking out over something I had put boundaries up and then fetl like they were being violated and I absolutely was sent into a tail sping because I didn't want to go back to my old way of being.

In the same way we freak out when we've decluttered and family/friends go over board with gifts and hand me downs. You will get to a new normal where you aren't freaked out by being derailed any more.

So yes, we talk about decluttering and all the work that goes into it but we can't expect it to make us happy. Happiness isn't an end result or something that just comes once we've gotten rid of enough stuff. It happens when we decide to intentionally and always only keep things that align with our happiness.

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you declutter, it never seems to make a dent?

Here's why - it's could be one, two or a combination of these things. Or maybe none apply.

  1. You have a skewed experience of accumulating versus decluttering. You have been accumulating in the form of shopping, holidays, birthdays, hand me downs, thrift stores, Amazon for YEARS. Maybe even decades.

If you're like me you never really knew that intentionally letting stuff go was a part of managing a home. Logistically it makes sense but it's just not always something we think about.

It takes time to recalibrate this.

  1. You don't realize how much you are still consuming so when you do declutter, it's almost immediately RE-cluttered. THink about when you go shopping or get things delivered and how much is coming in versus how much you actively let go.

It's similar to the first point above, but a more immediate and daily experience of what you accumulate versus what you declutter

  1. You haven't reached your personal clutter threshold yet. We all have one, some are bigger, some are smaller. It also changes based on the season of life we are in. But if you've decluttered a lot and have not RE-cluttered, this is likely where you are getting hung up.

  2. You haven't put the finishing touches on your decluttering yet. I'm talking about organization. Yes, it's an essentail piece of the decluttering puzzle but it's the LAST piece. Most of us try to lead with this. However, if you have decluttered enough and really don't think there is anything left you might just need to create systems and a flow around the stuff you have left. The way you know have reached this point is by having all of the stuff you own comfortably fit in the spaces you have. I'll give you an example with the toys.

At the end of the day we are just humans with nervous systems only capable of processing so much stimulus.

  1. The point of Motherhood Simplified and my work is to help you declutter. I can't in good conscience give enable to you get more stuff, especially if you haven't yet decluttered.

  2. There isn't a single thing I own that will change your life. Nothing I can sell you, other than my course would be aligned with the value I want to give you, and the way I seek to serve inside Motherhood Simplified.

  3. We are surrounded by quick fixes, and band-aid solutions, and distractions from the root issue and work that needs to be done. Sharing links or products I have take away from the bigger vision I have which is to help you master your home, and what is in it.

  4. I am here to actually support you, and yes, I am a business and profit is essential for me as a business and mother, but I won't do it at your expense. When you purchase a course from me I know it benefits you in the short and long term, and will save you time, energy and money and will give you your motherhood back .

  5. I know that when you declutter you stop caring what others have and are only concerned about what you have. You stop seeking lists of toys, gadgets, and IKEA hacks. You get hyper focused on you and your home, and what's in it and not only know, but believe you know exactly what serves your family and what doesn't. What I have, isn't necessarily what you need.

Why mothers need to declutter differently than anyone else.

-in dec 2020 140,000 women lost jobs, 16,000 men gained jobs.

The balance of the mental load in the home has historically been skewed and put onto the mother.

Which means we have less time, energy and overall bandwidth to just “get things done.” Especially right now.

We’re figuring out how to school our kids. We’re seeking ways to support them emotionally. And we’re doing it blindly.

And we’re doing it in homes that are overwhelming on a regular day. “Regular.”

We don’t get huge pockets of time to do this so we need to do it in bite sized pieces (workshop plug)

We are making decisions on behalf of, or holding the space for others to make the decisions. So YOU need support in that.

When you get support, you can better support others - aka your family.

The whole point of decluttering is to have enough, but not too much.

It's why I won't ever give a list of what you should have, or how much. It's different for everyone, and it changes based on your season of life, home size, and more.

The only way you will figure out what this balance is for you is to actually declutter! Dive in and get started with Decluttering Simplified. It requires action, and introspection. Asking yourself questions and thinking critically about what you have, need, and use.

How do you tell if you have enough, but not too much.

Toys

Clothes

Parkinson's law says if you have more, you're going to use more and then you get stuck in this cycle of being too far behind to actually catch up.

I’m just going to get right to it

There is a lot of unpacking we need to do with these most common decluttering beliefs, and if someone would have told me these back in 2012 I would have believed them all. I know better now!

1. Decluttering the means you'll do more laundry.

I held onto way more clothes than we could realistically even use. I told myself it was because my kids were messy. They grew too quickly and unpredictably. They ruined clothes. Among other things, but the biggest reason I told myself we needed the excessive amounts of clothes…

If I had less clothes, I would be doing laundry ALL the time. Even though I was already doing way too much laundry just trying to maintain what we had.

Here’s the thing. You need an amount of clothes you can comfortably manage. If you can manage doing 2-3 loads a day - go for it! But if you’re drowning and living out of laundry baskets or piles, without enough room in closets or drawers, you probably need to declutter.

2. Only rich people can declutter.

I definitely would have believed this. When we ditched all of our stuff other than what fit into one suitcase each, we had no money to our names and were flying 4500 miles away from the only place we had ever called home. I was worried sick each night about money and how we would replace all of our stuff.

The craziest thing happened though. My husband and I got resourceful as heck, and were able to generate all the resources we needed. I don’t have an exact number but about 80% of the stuff we parted ways with when we moved from Alaska to Florida we NEVER repurchased - it was clutter, so why would we?

Even better, because of this our money situation as a whole massively improved. We learned to be stewards of our money and to spend it on things that aligned with our values and budget.

We need much less than we think we do, and we confuse essential with modern convenience.

More importantly we forget that the world is a benevolent place and we are always provided for and we are more resourceful than we give ourselves credit. We can generate money and resources when we need it.

3. If you’re going to declutter you have to be a minimalist.

I don’t identify as a minimalist, though I am sure many put that label onto me. I have five kids and want a big home that we don’t ever have to leave if we don’t want to. I like to have nice things, and I have fun giving my kids gifts on Christmas and birthdays. That doesn’t fit into the mainstream definition of minimalism usually.

I want to have a home that is easy to maintain and allows me to be present with my family and pursue all of my creatives dreams and goals.

What do you think? Do you relate to any of these myths on either end? I want to hear your thoughts!

Decluttering is not microwaveable! meaning there isn’t a way to make something that should take ten minutes, happen in one. And if you can...It’s not natural 🤣

Decluttering is a long game, and it often goes slower than we like - for a lot of reasons. For example

😅decision making on all the things is hard

👯‍♀️we have a lot of kids

⏰we have work and school and sports and all the things to do

🏠 we’ve spent years, or maybe even decades accumulating stuff so of course it takes time to get rid of it.

I just wanted to let you know that if you think it happens quickly, or overnight - or in a weekend, or even a month... and disappointed that even though you’ve been working your 🍑 off, and feel like you have nothing to show for it, you’re doing it exactly right and nothing is wrong with you.

This is why I love before and afters - often times you don’t even realize how much you HAVE done because we’re such immediate beings we can only see what’s left in front of us. So take them, even if they’re just for you 😊

Today’s live at 2pm eastern will be a pep talk on the decluttering long game 🏈 and how to stay sane while you stick it out.

Here's the thing.. you know how all kids learn how to read on their own timeline? You're going to declutter your home on your own timeline as well.

Just like when we teach our kids to read, we intentionally and systematically do things to help them along the way - I do the same for you and decluttering your home.

Just like when your kids master reading sight words, and then move onto something more challenging like a simple story, then a beginnger chapter book, then college text books...

So do you in your decluttering process.

You're going to figure this out in your own individual timeline.

You have varying degrees of challenges, roadblocks, time availability, sizes of homes, amounts of stuff, emotional attachments, family on board (or not) - and OF COURSE it is going to take you time.

Of course you're going to feel like maybe you're not making the progress you "should".

That's NORMAL! You are making progress. You are figuring it out.

Give yourself a whole lot of grace and realize what you HAVE done, and what you HAVE learned. That will give you a jumping point to keep going forward.

Decluttering is a skill you master, just like reading. Eventually it becomes second nature and easy to do - but just like reading you'll always be able to find new ways to challenge yourself. Like learning to read in another language - or read computer code🤪

Ps - Today's live is going to be ALL about decluttering on your own timeline - and ways to give yourself super simple beginner steps while you learn to master it - just like reading!

Her story is so powerful, because she is a mom just like you, who has found freedom in her days because she decluttered.

Lindsey shares with us how decluttering helped her gain freedom in her days as a mom and tells the truth about the ebbs and flows of her journey - meaning that sometimes she's actively and massively decluttering, and other times she's not. But even in her seasons of not, she knows she is still making progress and moving forward.

brainstormwithme What are you doing with all your stuff and piles while there is nowhere to take it?

Enroll in Decluttering Simplified to get more support in deciding where to donate your things.

Here are my ideas - take them or leave them AND add your own creative solutions!!

  1. Give directly to the source. My personal opinion - donation centers have been a VERY easy way for us to unload our excess in ways that leave us without a whole lot of connection or personal responsibility. I am 100% guilty of this. Having way too much that is overwhelming to me and being excited to drop it off knowing full well, that most of it was also going to a burden to the places taking my donations. I think this is a powerful time to put a lot of consideration into what we have, and who we give it to. Obviously use safe practices for sanitation, but I also believe that the world has not stopped turning and people will still be needing stuff (like my toddler and baby who have outgrown their clothes, and I can't hit up our consignment store per usual). I am viewing my donations in a new way, with a whole lot more personal accountability than before when I could easily just drop it off and make it someone else's thing to deal with.
  2. Be discerning about what is trash and even donatable/re-sellable. Many centers are aready having glorified trash left on their doorsteps. Many are already issuing the message that they will not be accepting donations for a long while to prevent the spread of Corona. Many are also addressing the long standing issue that they are overwhelmed with too much stuff and will not be accepting donations when they are already full. This is a powerful display of the truth that we haven't been able to see before this which is that much of what is donated becomes trash because of overconsumption. Utilize your trash and recycling.
  3. Create piles within your home to go with a plan! Use a sticky note, tape or just a piece of paper labeled where they are going. Hide it in that closet (roganized and labeled), garage, spare bedroom. And then circle back to #1 and as much as possible find a direct source you can feel good about giving it to.
  4. Create a running inventory of what is in your home, what is needed and what you're getting rid of. Move things to the to go list periodically as you realize they aren't used, needed or wanted .

That's all I've got!

What are your ways you're doing this?!?! We need your help and ideas!

We dive deep and talk about how really, the only thing that will set you free is finding your own personal freedom and then geek out on all things enneagram and how it has helped her heal and become a truer version of herself and how that supports her motherhood.

There is a whole lot of urgency in motherhood and often times we confuse it with what's important. We spend most of our time doing all of the urgent things - laundry, dishes, toys, messes and it takes up all of the time for the things that are important like being present with your children, creating a home that makes your kids feel welcome and celebrated, or being able to have a life outside of being a mom.

In today's episode we talk about the difference between the two and how to recognize urgent things you can eliminate in order to make room for the important things.

We all have misconceptions about minimalism and the minimalist lifestyle we have been led to believe that aren't true and hold us back!

They hold us back because we think that it has to be "by the rules" or we aren't doing it right or well enough and our minimalist club card will be taken!

We will be kicked out of the club and won't be allowed back in.. but guess what? That club doesn't exist and the card doesn't either so this is your permission to make minimalism work FOR you, however that looks.

In this episode we talk about

... common minimalist lies we are told and believe like...

... it's a form of deprivation - no decor, toys, white walls, no collections, no sentiments

... you have to have a tiny home and one kid

... you can only have the essentials

... and the TRUTH which is that true minimalism is making it work for you, in your own way

This is my first LIVE postpartum episode with you! So of course I am going to be sharing how I have recently set up my home to work FOR me and not against me in this postpartum phase.

With a newborn, a toddler and 3 big kids I felt like our home needed to be re-curated. So I went on a mission to declutter the old and bring in some NEW - specifically in the form of toys for the toddler.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

... What toys I purcahsed for my toddler and why

... My thoughts on bringing Montessori into the home

NOT decluttering is actually more wasteful than decluttering - because when you declutter you are being brave and bold enough to actually look at your consumption habits and past shortcomings and realizing that you don't actually have a problem of not enough, but a problem of too much.

We want to declutter and we have so many reasons WHY, and we have so many reasons we don't - one being that decluttering and letting things go can feel SO wasteful.

We see the potential in everything. We see something that someone, somewhere could use at some point.

We see piles and piles of stuff that will contribute to landfills and that makes us feel so bad.

But this is the hard truth - most of your clutter that you don't want - no one else wants. The waste is NOT in decluttering, or throwing things away. It's falling into the consumerism and overconsumption trap in the first place.

This is episode confronts this issue head on and teachers how to become a part of the long term solution, and not letting yourself continue to be a part of the problem.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

... overconsumption and the fact that it is the reason for waste

...the REAL story behind where most of our clutter went when we let it all go

...clutter pile shifting on a global scale

... and the truth that you clutter really isn't that special, useful or needed by anyone

... Plus the one powerful lesson you can learn to actually make a change and be a part of the waste solution

Did you know that one of the side effects of a cluttered home for siblings is increased fighting? Biting, pushing, hitting, yelling all increase within the confines of a cluttered and chaotic environment. The opposite is also true in that you can find relief from these symptoms by decluttering and creating order, predictability and room to breathe within the home.

This is NOT a parenting episode teaching you how to change or manage behavior in your kids. It is just my personal experience through teaching in many classrooms all over the country and within my own home and the anecdotal evidence I have collected that proves our environments can literally make or break us.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

...how impactful the environment really is on us, AND on your kids

...real life examples of dramatic changes in behavior I have seen in kids when we decluttered the classrooms

... how it gives you time, energy and space to see what's really going on with your kids

... how your chaos becomes your kids' chaos, and on the other end of it, your calm can become their calm

Today I share with you what those are and what the foundation of the Motherhood Simplified movement is based on.

Often times moms come into the Motherhood Simplified community with the same root issues but seeking the same bandaid solutions. I often find myself giving advice that I can FEEL through the internet that is frustrating to the moms I get to know becuase.... it's not the easy answer.

It's not the answer we're sold by Target and the Container Store and Home Goods. But these answers - which are my opinions - about clutter in the home and the impact it has on us are strong.

So strong that I will shout them from the rooftops to any mom who will listen because I know they will be infinitely more helpful to you than any fluffy, unopinionated, easy answer I can give you.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

... the strong, and sometimes unpopular opinions I have about clutter and how they will HELP you more than any weak, unopinionated bandaid solution

I wholheartedly believe that BEFORE is the answer, and for so many reasons. In this episode I tell the story of my different postpartum experiences I have had. The good, the bad, the ugly and what I wish I would have known about decluttering BEFORE actually having the baby. Because for me, every time, the hard work comes after you have the baby. Especially if you already have other kids.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

... why it's so important to muster up the energy you can while pregnant to declutter BEFORE the baby comes

... how much it will pay you if you DO this

... how to get started in the fastest, and simplest way without burning yourself out while pregnant before baby comes

Toy Story 4 has us all talking about toys and our kids' toys and making us feel all kinds of things about them!! Because it's Toy STORY and a good story does that. In this episode I share with you my biggest takeaways from the movie and why I think that it actually sends the exact opposite message of keeping all the toys, and that we should really watch it with an open mind and hear the messages that will really help us be intentional about what toys we have and keep in our homes.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

....some of my favorite take aways from Toy Story 4

... The fact that we have TOO MANY toys, and not enough kids to actually play with them

... the mark of a good generational, favorite toy

You know all those moms who do it all. Well, I know their secret and it's not what you think it is.

I'll be totally honest and LOVE being the one who "does it all", I am a 3 on the enneagram and it just is what it is and I am who I am. BUT I know the secret - and it's this... we do NOT do it all.

We eliminate the unnecessary, invaluable and time/energy suckers and focus on what matters MOST to us. That is the secret. It is that simple and that complicated.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

... The number one and number two way moms who appear to do it all, ACTUALLY do it all

...What my life used to be like when I put on a show of having it all, and how it is now when I actually feel like I am doing it all

But what if we switched that story and started telling ourselves, no, I am going to do this becuase KIDS.

Meaning instead of pushing the blame off onto our kids (I mean it is the easiest excuse in the world) we decided to say no, they are the REASON I am doing these things now.

In this episode we talk about who you need to become in order to declutter your home and how. We get so caught up in the HOW to do it, we forget to see the bigger picture and that is WHO we are becoming in this process, and who need to continue to evolve into in order to finish.

When you set out to declutter your home you start off overwhelmed, unsure, stuck, unable to make decisions. As you continue on through the process you MUST start to change and become a woman who makes decisions, who takes action, and gets herself out of her rut. That is so much more fun to focus on than HOW you're going to get it done and makes it easier to stick with it long term.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

Join us for a conversation with REAL mom Lindsey Camp and hear her story about how she decluttered her home. Lindsey started off by watching the Minimalist documentary on Netflix and then asked if anyone knew of a support group or how to apply the same concepts to a regular mom. Love you Minimalists but mama's need to take a different path toward simplicity, right?!

Lindsey's story is powerful as she talks about her life before she decluttered and how overwhelmed and tired she was and how she can now take a pole class twice a week, relax with her husband and let her kids be free range kids like she always wanted them to be (instead of constantly worried about what they were getting into and if they would get hurt.) How her relationship with money has changed, and her best tip for someone on the fence about whether or not they should declutter or not.

IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT

.... How Lindsey got started on her decluttering process, her struggles and hesitations and HOW she got past them

...the benefits she has experienced because of her decluttering

...she shares her truth about the big mindset shifts she's experienced in her motherhood and how her clutter is not a part of that.

It's that season.. where all the gifts and toys come rolling in and making your house a cluttered mess.. right? Wrong. Your home is cluttered and overwhelming to you because of what happened the other 11 months of the year. In this video I teach you how to clear out the clutter so that you can have a Christmas season of JOY and FUN, instead of opening up a long line of toys and gifts and deep heavy sighs of "oh, great, more work.". I reject the idea of "experiences" as gifts, and limiting yourself to a strict criteria.. if that works for you, great. But handing out approved gift lists, and requesting experiences only don't solve the problem of your cluttered home. You need to declutter and clear out the existing overwhelm and burden so that you can have room for gratitude, joy, and have fun giving and receiving this holiday season.
