Christians are told to submit to their leaders, which means giving up our autonomy and putting ourselves under the church’s authority. Focus Passage: John 15:1-11
Our desire for Jesus should lead us to keep His commandments, allowing us to abide in His love. Our desire for obedience should be greater than our desire for sin. This won’t always be true, because our flesh and spirit are in a constant battle (romans 7, Psalm 73:26, Phil. 3:3, Gal. 5:17), but abide means to continue. So if we stumble and fall into sin, God’s desire for us to is come back to him & continue in Him. Your sin does not define you, your fruit defines you. Your failures don’t define you, your obedience to Christ defines you.

Focus Verse:
Jesus promises His disciples that a Helper would come to them and that they would be able to 'see' Him, but the rest of the world cannot see Him. He also gives some insight into what role the Holy Spirit will place in the lives of the disciples since Jesus has said that He is going away and the disciples cannot follow Him to where He is going.
Scripture Focus: John 13:31-35 In this passage, Jesus gives a clarification of the commandment is gave earlier in John's gospel. What does it look like to love one another? What risks to do we run when we know what we are just going through the motions but don't have love for other people as the root of our actions? John 12:44-50 Last podcast we looked at the triumphant entry Jesus made during the Passover. In this episode, Chris looks at Jesus' last words to the large crowds that gathered in Jerusalem. In his final address to the masses, Jesus references the hardening of the people's hearts as in the days of Isaiah and calls people to believe in Him for eternal life.
What made this entry into Jerusalem so triumphant? There is a lot happening leading up to this verse and then comes together in this short passage. ● The high priests are plotting to kill Jesus ● A large crowd is gathering in Jerusalem for the Passover ● Another large crowd is with Jesus as they inter into Jerusalem ● Word of Jesus' raising Lazarus from the dead has reached Jerusalem and the people think he is coming as their King and deliver them from Rome

Sign #6 - Healing the Man Born Blind (9:1-41) Points to the reality that Jesus is Lord of all things, he heals broken bodies and lost hearts Jesus opens the eyes of our heart to who he is and to see the fullness of life in him. Demonstrated by Saul of Tarsus and his persecution of Christians, then encounters Jesus – followed by scales being removed from his eyes when he believed, filled with the Holy Spirit and was baptized, leading him to new life in Jesus (see Acts 9)

Sign #1 - Turning Water into Wine (2:1-11) Points to the reality that Jesus’ kingdom will be characterized by celebration, feasting, abundance, generosity, and joy “Jesus shows his glory…at a wedding—a massive, long party. And not only does he do it at a party, but he does it by producing gallons of wine—so much wine that it would have been impossible to have drunk it all at the party. Whoever this Jesus is, he is not what religion has made him out to be. He is about fullness…” —Josh Moody What about this sign reveals his glory? Context of a wedding Nature of the miracle Hijacked rituals Wine itself TEACHINGS Cleansing of the Temple (2:12-22) The point was never the temple, but it was a means to foreshadow the way to God. The reality that the temple points to is actually Jesus because he is the only way to God. New Birth (3:1-36) Jesus is performing these signs so that people will know about this new birth that he is coming to secure. Through his sacrifice and because of the Father’s love, God is saving a people that will be given new hearts and so they can walk in the light. This only happens through the Spirit. Water of Life (4:1-42) A new day when the gospel is going to all nations, and worship is not centered on a physical place or geographical location and the wellspring of life will be inside of God’s people. Sign #2 - Healing the Nobleman’s Son (4:46-54) Points to the reality that Jesus comes to give life, not just physical, but eternal John 3:15 (ESV) 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

As we begin to look at the Gospel of John, we also share some of the changes coming to the class.
We want to be clear in what we are communicating. We are still a class for young families. But our focus is on becoming everyday disciples as we grow in our relationship with Christ (Matthew 28).
Part of being an everyday disciple will be how we handle ourselves when our kids are driving us nuts, or our friends are going through a hard time. Being able to listen to what is distracting them from the joy Christ brings us and being able to guide them back to the peace He offers. That is our focus. To follow Jesus in every area of our lives.

This week we close out the five BLESS Rhythms as we look at Speak and Sabbath. When in a conversation with someone, it doesn't take long to start hearing their bad news. As we close out this study in 1 Peter, Peter reminds us to be on the lookout, but not to freak out at the troubles we face in our lives. Instead, find comfort and encouragement from the body of Christ.
This week Shawn rounds out Chapter 4 in 1 Peter. We are faced with some pretty big questions in this section. They should be causing us to think about how we are interacting with others as we suffer for Christ.
We've outlined what our calling is, but how do we live that out every day? How has God helped us to live out that calling?
What was the purpose of Christ's victory? What does it mean for us? This passage works through how we have been brought to God and what Jesus accomplished on the cross.
What would it look like to live on mission every day for Jesus? Peter begins this portion of his letter to the elect exiles with some practical ways that we can relate to today.
If you follow Jesus, your life can be summed up by battles and witnesses. We know we are going to face battles as we follow Jesus in this life, but we are to use those battles to be a good witness for Christ. He has guaranteed us an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading. Our work here on this earth as exiles is to live honorably so that anyone who accuses us of evil will see how great our God is.
As we move into chapter two of Peter's first letter, we see a shift in Peter's writing. Peter is very specific in how he writes his letter and makes sure that his audience understands that living the life Christ has called us to live requires sharing the Gospel and just as important, sharing the Gospel together.
Love does! What does it mean to love like Jesus? Many times we can get caught in making sure we are doing the RIGHT thing instead of having our focus on Jesus. We end up doing things from a selfish or prideful standpoint instead of from a pure heart.
Have you ever felt like this were going well and then all of a sudden, past struggles and temptations pop up into your life? These distractions lead us away from Jesus and the holy life we are called to live. In this message, Scott Cunningham shares how Peter advises the elect exiles to overcome those distractions with a hope that leads to holiness.
