The Social Fishing Podcast is hosted by Rhys Creed, and he shares the very best in freshwater fishing content in Australia. Interviewing incredible anglers and talking about both lure and bait tactics for all freshwater species.
Nate Archer is back on the podcast, and this time we're deep into winter barramundi in the impoundments – genuinely one of Nate's favourite times of year to chase them, even though most anglers write the season off as too cold and push it to the bottom of their list.
We go right through how the fish behave once the water cools down. Nate breaks down how to read wind direction and water temperature to find the warm pockets barra push into on a sunny bluebird day, why keeping your lure high in the water column and your retrieve dead slow matters so much more in winter, and how to fish weed-choked bays (or “broccoli towers”, as Nate calls them) without spooking easily-stressed fish. We also get into the difference between chasing them without live sonar – casting the edges and staying stealthy – and using it to find bigger fish holding out in deeper, more stable water on a miserable overcast day.
There's a great analogy in here too: why a small, shallow bay swings in temperature all day like a cup of water left in the sun, while a big, deep bay stays stable like a swimming pool – and why that's the key to finding winter barra. Nate also shares the story of a client's barra from his very first week guiding, a 120cm fish so solid it pushed 42kg on the scales.
We finish up talking about the massive change in Nate's own life since we last spoke. After eighteen years as a carpenter, he's hung up the nail bag for good and gone full-time as a fishing guide, chasing barra and Murray cod across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. He talks us through the moment he decided to make the jump, where he guides now, and the numbers from his most recent trip. We're back on the river for our annual river drift – the trip we do every single year, three boats deep on the Murrumbidgee for three days chasing Murray Cod. This time the podcast looks a little different. We normally sit down around the campfire on the last night to record, but this year we ran out of time, so Dan and I recorded this one on the water instead, kicking off with our first cast on the third and final morning.
We talk through the whole float: the lowest we've ever fished the river, the stitch-up we pulled on the other four blokes to shift camp, and the lessons that came out of three days on the water. Dan tells the story of a big fish, and why hook sharpness made the difference on this trip. Then there's Alex's fish of the trip – a genuine 114cm river cod that had the whole group buzzing.
We also get into the stuff that helps your own fishing: the three time windows of a surface bite session and why the last fifteen minutes of light matters so much, the difference between a big-fish approach and a small-fish approach with your lure choice, and the boat control lesson that took one of our members from two fish to ten in a single session.

Fish kills are disappointing and heart breaking, no matter where we see them or how devastating they are. Recently Murray Cod have shown up dead at Burrinjuck Dam. Fishing this lake often we wanted to know why!
After witnessing a similar fish kill at Blowering back in 2019 we have already had some experience witnessing similar fish deaths with a similar pattern.
In this chat we dive deep into what a ‘roll over’ event is, how it happens and why we believe this is the cause of this fish kill. In this episode we discuss how the water behaves, stratifies and reacts to the environment around it. This also affects fish activity and can be a reason as to why fishing is so tough at times…

You’ve probably heard the saying, “1020 the fish are plenty”? This is in reference to the Barometric Pressure and when it’s over 1020hPa… the fishing is good.
But how does the barometric pressure affect the fish? The most common theory that been around for many years is the direct impact on the swim bladder on the fish… but this theory had its flaws.
So I decided to do a deep dive into barometric pressure and explored other avenues as to how it directly impacts fish, especially freshwater fish. In this episode I look at swim bladders, and how they work. As well as exploring dissolved oxygen to see if this has a direct correlation to pressure changes.
What I find in this episode is fascinating… and well worth a listen for any angler – fresh or salt. Enjoy!

Billy Westerveld looks at Murray Cod in a different way to most, he is very in tune to their behaviours and makes small changes to his fishing with big results. A top guy who is willing to share and help others – which lead him to become one of the SF Team and writing the reports for Lake Eildon.

Alex Ross loves his freshwater fishing, especially land-based fishing for Murray Cod on creek and river systems. Based in the Wagga region and growing up on the Murray River, he has been surrounded by premier cod rivers.

Another campfire chat between six of us from our April float down the Murrumbidgee River in the Takacat inflatables. We took three Takacat inflatables boats and drifted down the Murrumbidgee.
April is all about low flows but on this trip we were met with far from ideal conditions with a fast rising river due to dam releases. We went ahead with the trip and tried to work out if we could catch them during a rise.
Fishing was tough but we still managed to land some great fish. Enjoy the stories, laughs and banter as we recap this trip while sitting around the campfire on the last night of the trip.

This is a sad topic but one that needs to be shared. There is so much false information, blaming and comments going around in the media around the fish kills. So, with that I wanted to produce a series of podcast, articles, blog posts and videos interviewing knowledgeable people and sharing the reasons behind these fish deaths.
This is the third major fish kill along the Murray River we will have seen in 12 years. We as humans have caused this issue and it’s up to us to fix it. This is a MUST LISTEN and SHARE episode.
I was lucky enough to be joined by environmental science teacher Peter Phillips who is completing his PhD on the flooding along the Murray River. He spent over 50 days floating the Murray River in the 2016 floods and has an in depth understanding on this river system.
In this episode we discuss a range of topics including blackwater, the current flooding and what’s causing it, what has happened in Shepparton and Echuca with the suspicious fish deaths. We also discuss the nature of the river and how the flows have changed over the past 50 years, the prediction of these current fish kills and what we need to do to stop this from happening again in the future.

The Annual Lake Windamere Trip! This podcast was all about our big trip to the iconic Windamere Dam. A special place on the calendar for spring each year and it was great to get back to this system and hook into some yellas.
This year was very different with a completely new lake as levels have risen to 88% (and still rising). This has changed the entire landscape and layout of the lake; we have new challenges of locating fish and trying to effectively fish the flooded edges and vegetation.

Ben Wiseman took out his first AYC Competition win this year at Wyangala Dam. I wanted to get Ben on for a chat because his story to wining this year’s comp is very cool. The Social Fishing Team fished Wyangala Dam a week before the competition this year and we shared heaps of information inside our membership platform.
Ben took that knowledge on board and applied it to his fishing the following weekend, which helped his and his mate take out the win. Here is a message I received from Ben a few days after the competition:
“G’day Rhys, I just wanted to get in contact and let you know how your recent trip report on Wyangala helped me take out the biggest cod and win the recent AYC Wyangala Cod Classic.
We used livescope to try and find fish and temp them into biting, to work out a plan of attack for the rest of the weekend. After several hours of scanning for fish and finding some but we weren’t able to get any to commit. After a disappointing session we decided to use the tactics that you described in your trip report from the weekend before and put the livescope away.
We started flicking unweighted swimbaits at the shallow points we had marked around 5am before the sun came up, after a couple of hours with no success the sun was finally up, and we were in full sunlight then my lure got engulfed at 7:45am by a 710mm cod on a shallow point.
Feeling pumped but sore from casting such a large lure for so long I decided to start casting a Gantia before the next shallow point that we had marked earlier. First cast at the point and my rod loaded not long after my lure hit the water and I was into a big cod. After I got it near the boat and a few lunge’s down deep we managed to get the fish into the net, it measured 1075mm at 8:50 am.
I ended up with the biggest Cod for the weekend and our combined efforts got us the win with a total of 2115mm for out two biggest Cod and landing the most fish for the weekend beating at lot of other accomplished teams and anglers.
Only after reading your report and deciding to put the tactics you described in to practice, we able to take out the Win. It has definitely changed my perspective on live sounders as we beat a lot of teams that were running it on their boats.”

It’s crazy the people you run into in life and how a conversation for the first time can be so powerful! In this episode I sit down with Shane Domaille, the man behind the Goodoogang brand. If you have an Instagram account, you will have probably seen the @goodoogang page.
I’ve always wanted to hear from the man behind the brand and hear the story about how it all started. In this chat we talk about how fishing started for Shane, how he grew up fishing with his dad and how he got got into freshwater fishing in recent years.

Steve Starling (more commonly known as Starlo) is one of the most recognised faces in the Australian fishing industry and I feel privileged to welcome him back onto the podcast for another episode. If you haven’t already, go listen to Ep 8 of the podcast to hear our first catchup over 2.5 years ago. A lot has changed since then, and these changes have impacted the way Starlo fishes today.

Jack Hocking owns and runs Lake Mulwala Sportfishing, based on the cod capital in Yarrawonga. He has been guiding for a little over a year and has been fishing since he could walk. Jack is an incredibly accomplished angler and has caught countless numbers of giant cod from Mulwala.

Josh Read lives and breaths fishing and will head out at any chance he gets. In this episode Josh talks about fishing small clear systems for Murray Cod from his punt, and tips on how he does it. He also talks about what happened to the Upper Murray after the devastating bushfires, and what impact this event had on the Murray Cod population. Josh worked with local fisheries and through his local fishing club to clean up after the event, and now in works to restock and study the system for the future of the fishery.
Josh and his girlfriend were also lucky enough to come across not one, but two Golden tagged fish in Victoria and he share this experience. Then towards the end of the episode we talk about live technology and we both share our experiences on this topic.
