In this MEN'S mental health awareness month we talk MEN:)
I was recently faced with a situation where a male friend called me and couldn't stop crying. It was a sudden realisation that i have not paid attention to this -i have never seen a man cry! And, i had no words to console him. I just kept mum and then quickly added -let's coffee!
And, that is the germ of this episode.
Why don't men express themselves?
Especially in front of the women in their lives?
Is it a cultural thing?
Or is it ingrained in them to be MACHO?
Something underlined by moviemakers and advertising makers?
Time to correct this ?
Our guest is Dr Kersi Chavda- an eminent psychiatrist with a huge clientele of people in the public arena- from politicians to actors etc.
We talk:
Men don't cry and why?
Major symptoms in men's mental health
A lot of artists, actors and politicians are ur clients-what are major areas of concern when it comes to people in the public arena?
What needs be done to take care of it?
You can double this up with EP 37 of THE SOS SHOW with Dr. Kersi Chavda on Mental Hygiene.

I am terrified of the word INFLUENCER- WHICH IS why i have been talking to a few influencers to understand more of what they think of being an influencer.
I rarely and only when needed go on instagram or facebook- because these best celebs and influencers living the bestest lives can make one feel shaky and i am not sure how many of you out there feel the same....
And, then comes the news if a celeb suicide and influencer suicides and i wonder why did people who have or are projecting their best lives with possible fame and money END IT ALL.
What is the psychology behind this influencer culture

Do you know that your brain works in different frequencies through out the day- from the time you get up to the time you fall asleep, and while you are sleeping!; these frequencies are defined as beta, alpha, theta, gamma, delta. It is being researched and proven that the slower your brain wave frequency, the better your mental and physical health. It is also being researched that slower brain wave frequency, gives you access to your subconscious mind- and it is being proven that our life, our decisions, our behaviour - in-fact, who we are, 95 percent of it, is controlled by our subconscious mind and 5 percent by our conscious mind. So, whats the big deal here? The big deal is that, we do-not know, that 95 percent of the time, we take decisions that are controlled by our subconscious programming.
And, if we access our subconscious mind and re- programme it according to the WE that we want to become, or the life that we want to create, we will be able to manifest and fulfil the life, we exactly want to live.
So, again how do we do this?
By being able to control our brain waves and access our subconscious mind more frequently and reprogram it.
Mediations are a way to do it. And, since i have been digging into this bit for quite sometime- i mystically came across this book- change your brain waves by Scholars and researchers Yukio and Susanne who explain this phenomenon through the practise of chantings.
This episode is cross-overed between our two shows THE SOS SHOW AND THE ARTISTS.

Dear SOS Show Community,
As we approach the end of another transformative year, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for being an integral part of THE SOS SHOW. It has been an extraordinary journey filled with meaningful conversations, insightful stories, and a shared commitment to mental health awareness.
This year, we proudly added 20 episodes to our collection, contributing over countless hours of content aimed at fostering understanding, empathy, and resilience. Among the highlights were episodes 116 and 118, where we delved into the experiences of caregivers and ventured into the stories of mental health founders in episode 120.
One standout episode that resonated with many was episode 116, focusing on sensitizing people to the importance of mental health. This episode became our most shared, a testament to the power of our community in spreading awareness.
Our exploration into the depths of mental health in smaller cities and towns in episode 111 shed light on crucial issues often overlooked. Additionally, we embarked on a creative journey with episodes delving into the intersections of artists and mental health, covering topics like compassion, synchronicities, forgiveness, ambition, and the significance of understanding one's ambition.
Episode 106 took a deep dive into the foundation of healthy relationships, discussing the importance of building trust. We placed a spotlight on caregivers in various episodes, emphasizing the indispensable role they play and why it's essential for them to receive care too.
As we stand on the cusp of a new year, we want to assure you that THE SOS SHOW will continue to evolve and gently shake things up. Our commitment to bringing you valuable insights, fostering dialogue, and promoting mental health remains unwavering.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible community. Together, let's continue to break down barriers, raise awareness, and support each other on our mental health journeys.

On World mental health Day Oct 10th, we also approached the 100th episode of THE SOS SHOW. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the journey; and to everyone tirelessly working to create awareness about mental health and well-being. One of the toughest parts of our existence is our relationships- and this is not just becoming complicated by the day but also drastically transforming with time. We examine some key issues in human relationships in today's times and try and find the loopholes and key areas that we can work on every day to keep us going through them sanely. Our guest for this episode is Kamna Chibber-Head - Mental Health Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Fortis Healthcare.
Key pointers:
1) How do we define relationships in today's time- when marriages are falling apart and people are busy on their cell phones and careers? 2) How do interpersonal relationships matter when we are in a constantly connected world? 3) Do virtual relationships count? 4) We are constantly connected yet isolated 5) how do good interpersonal relationships make us happy- which part of our brains and chemicals it triggers 6) women have this thing to be emotionally dependent on men.. men have this thing to keep everything inside- where do the two meet? And because women are emotionally dependent they also are ok with abusive unhappy relationships- 7) Relationships require time and attention- how do we choose them and build them- personally and professionally?

Why is stress the next biggest challenge in the mental health space- because we can take stress very casually and it can keep accumulating and turn out to be a silent killer. Stress modifies our brain. Chronic stress leads to anxiety and depression. It's not necessary that everyone gets stressed only by life-altering events- like this pandemic, or the loss of a dear one, or a grave fall in businesses. I know of people who get chronically stressed with the smallest of things- vegetables are over, the maid has not come, some grocery missing at home- little things for them are the big things which then get spilled to other people in their environment.
How can we effectively manage stress in our everyday lives and what are those little things that can become a part of our daily routines to transform our lives.

Hi Folks, we are back with a second COVID wave, unfortunately. There has been a continuation of job losses and financial strains.
1 person dies by suicide every 40 seconds and 1 ATTEMPTS suicide every 3 seconds.
This is our humble endeavor to reach out and help the ones attempting suicide every 3 seconds.
10 ways to fight SUICIDAL THOUGHTS:
1) Know your own thoughts- how harmful are they. 2) Phone a friend/ acquaintance 3) Think of people who are emotionally connected to you 4) Know that everything is impermanent- this too shall pass!! 5) Focus on glass being half full. 6) Center your mind on a chant- UNDERSTAND the functioning of your brain through the brain waves-Gamma, Beta, alpha, theta, Delta. Knowing your brain will make it easier for you to control it. 7) Stop blaming yourself for everything. 8)Call the helpline numbers ( during the pandemic you might not be able to get through some of them) 9) Know your neighbors- your fastest reach for help. 10) You are not alone- reach out to us.
What can you as an individual do, to help someone:
1) Let's be aware of each other - Keep in touch- especially the elderly, the ones living alone and the ones who have lost their close ones. 2) Be empathetic, don't judge, accept the other person going through a crisis, don't be indifferent- like- it's not my problem!! 3) Keep track of their well-being.
A small note:
We at Ep.Log Media along with Metaphysical Lab have successfully produced 50+ episodes covering stories of people battling mental illnesses, to practitioners and mental health activists, the podcast has become a rich source of information on mental health, and also a platform for sharing lived experiences.

Continuing our discussion on Entrepreneurship and mental health ( chk our earlier episode 20), we are in conversation with Michael Freeman. Dr. Freeman serves as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, and as a Mentor in the Entrepreneurship Center at UCSF. This week on The SOS Show, Suchita is joined by Mr. Kapil Mehta, the founder of Secure Now, an insurance brokering firm.
MHCA 2017 has put physical and mental health as equally important. IRDAI has directed mental health insurance companies to include mental illnesses in their repertoire. But we are still very far from there.
Some of the important pointers we talk: Lack of implementation of MHCA 2017 How do insurance companies define Mental Illnesses How many insurance companies have included mental health What is included in the insurance- as OPD plays an important part. What is the amount of insurance why are insurance companies hesitant in the following suit Why aren't caregivers included in this? Challenges and loopholes and how can we overcome them. How can you get mental health insurance!
The great takeaway is to make data on Mental illnesses transparent and easily available so their understanding of mental illnesses makes the insurance more applicable.

What are the Loopholes existing in the MH care systems in a developed world like the US and where does a developing world stand? How effective are therapies and how do we measure them- as defined by Dr. Bridget Nash- Coffee clutch therapy vs Evidence-based therapy. Why everyone should learn CBT and how it has proved to be super effective in countries like Zimbabwe- an anecdote there. Continuing our quest with hearing voices and understanding Schizophrenia- this episode of THE SOS SHOW explores hearing-voices.org- an organization that supports the voice-hearers and their caregivers and is making efforts to create more awareness on voice-hearers globally. The organization currently is in 38 countries. We spoke to Kate Crawford who is a voice hearer and works for the organization and how they are trying to have open conversations around Mental illness. We talk about Kate's personal journey about hearing voices from an early age of 4 to now- but now she is more comfortable with her voices; her efforts to support other voice-hearers have helped her tremendously coping with her own life...
www.hearing-voices.org is an important organization that one can reach out, to understand more about this least understood mental illness.

A profession that saves lives is the highest risk group when it comes to suicides. The data from the U.S states- 1 doctor dies per day by suicide. A particular suicide that came to the forefront a few months back- Dr. Anurag Kumar- who wrote this post on medium about being severely depressed and trying to take his life multiple times till he finally succeeded and, that too, while he was undergoing medication and everyone was aware of his condition and intention.
So does that mean that we as people are helpless in taking care or saving a life and a life that decides to go will go?
We talk to Dr. Chetna Dengri and Shivangi Mishra (medical students) about what they undergo in the process of becoming doctors that could possibly push young medical doctors/ students to take their own lives.
What does their day, their profession, their teachers, and their parents demand out of them- Is our competitive culture, dirty competitive spirit leading to this? Is this culture leading these 19 years olds to breakdowns, which in turn is killing their spirit? Can we do something about it, are we doing enough or are we as helpless!!

How do we define Disability? Does this definition vary from country to country?
Dr. Satender Singh takes us through his journey of living and fighting for his rights and hence the rights of others- Fighting the stigma of his disability- discrimination, and harassment.
Disability is in the environment he reiterates, in our awareness, in our understanding. We try and understand the kind of work that needs to be done from a rights-based perspective.
70% of disability is in villages- what are we doing about it? What is the government doing about it? Why are laws/ policies made but not implemented? Currently, what are the rights of a person with a disability that they must take note of!!

How can a parent-child relationship define the mental health of a child?
In our earlier episodes, some of our guests felt that their mental illness was due to "bad" parenting. Do parents especially in India make an effort to understand - really understand their child- or are they just a "project" for them as pointed out by our guest for today- Varkha Chulani. Find her at www.varkhachulani.com.
The points of discussion are: 1) Can "Bad" parenting lead to mental illness in a child? 2) What could be a possible difference (in percentage) between genetic and sociological reasons for a child's mental illness? 3) Do Indian parents understand the EMOTIONAL WELL BEING of a child? 4) Are we taught to build a relationship with our children? What are the ways and is it something that needs to be constantly worked upon. 5) Some points on BAD parenting 6) Expectations from their child- is it justified? Can that stress on a child lead to mental illness?

Two specific loss of lives in the past month has shaken us- one is Dr. Anurag Kumar the psychiatrist and other is Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput ( which is still under speculation/ investigation.) Both these suicides led to a huge social media uproar- one had a suicide note and depression attributed to it; the second one had no suicide note, but depression and other things are being attributed to it. The second suicide triggered other suicides. The suicide amidst the doctors has been the highest for a while- the figures (speculative/ internet) from the U.S are appalling- one suicide a day- 1 million suicide a year. We do not know the accurate figures from India.
But the point that comes out of the discussion and social media uproar is - are we using the word "depression" the right way; and are there different kinds of depressions that can trigger a suicide besides "clinical depression". We also talk about IPC 306 - abetment to suicide. Can we as a society be more aware of each other and be more empathetic to prevent suicide?

In Mental Illness, it is not just the medical care that counts but also the psychological care. Perhaps as we move deeper into the podcasts on our show we realize that psychological care should take precedence over medical care.

A revolution in mental health - where the rights is given to mental health -and the onus to central n state government -In this enlightening conversation with Arjun Kapoor we talk about Mental Healthcare Act (MHCA) 2017
Arjun is a lawyer and is a Research Associate at the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy (CMHLP). His areas of interest range from law & development, mental health policy and psychology.
In this episode we discuss the definition of Mental Health & Illness in the Indian Law, what was the need for the MHCA 2017, a peek in the history of the law for mental health, why is the act so important and how is it going to bring a change.
The law defines the fact that, Mental Healthcare is not just a law for healthcare, but is a step to ensure human rights.
Some Takeaways from the episode are:
-The right is given to people suffering from various mental illnesses where they can demand a treatment wo any form of discrimination
-The state has to look into the demand and provide treatment
-The biggest challenge though is the infrastructure m the gap in mental health professionals, this is where community like Atmiyata can come in

Caregiving for someone with mental illness is as hard and especially when the mental illness has psychotic traces like schizophrenia.
Practicing active empathy, compassion and sensitivity can really help.
Namarita shares her story of her family dealing with her mother having schizophrenia. We also talk about the voices and the dimensions that the person living with schizophrenia deals with. Modern medication since 1887 have not been able to cure the side effects of medication or the reason behind the voices.
We try and decipher this from the caregivers point of view.
The causes/ trigger for schizophrenia could be varied from genetic, to trauma, to sensitivity quotient of the person to the person getting inside a new environment.
Developing a buffer system unconsciously can really help. We still have a severe lack of psychologist and psychiatrist to deal with severe mental health cases.
How are we going to bridge this gap.

Bipolar is hard to gauge. It can pass of like a mood swing or even depression. But there is a deeper reason to it; that deeper reason can be genetic or as we take this discussion on bipolar further- it can be a stress trigger. We don't have any concrete answers yet- As Shreevatsa Nevatia the consulting editor of India today and thriving with bipolar points out- Bipolar is like WHO DUN IT!

A TEDX Speaker & Ashoka Fellow, Reshma Valiapan, is among the people to embrace Schizophrenia and take advantage of it to become successful at a plethora of activities, one of them being Painting.
Schizophrenia is a very tough mental illness where the person suffering and their environment both get affected in equal and more proportions. This was first identified in the year 1887.
John Nash, the Nobel prize winner, Albert Einstein's Son, The most admired Novelist of American Pop Culture Jack Kerouac, all were diagnosed with this chronic mental illness .
One of the primary symptoms is they hear voices- who tell them to do various things.
In our podcast- THE SOS SHOW- with the admirable artist, Reshma Valliappan we try to decipher those voices; we also try and understand the basis of Schizophrenia.
It's very strange that with all the medical developments we still don't have a complete understanding of this mental illness- in fact, we are still at the tip of the iceberg.
In this conversation, Reshma strongly feels it is the dysfunctional parenting that leads to this chronic illness- SO DO WE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO DYSFUNCTIONAL PARENTING- AND CAN WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AS A SOCIETY!!
We still don't have any good medication without side effects for Schizophrenia; in fact, THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE SO SEVERE THAT THE PERSON STOPS FUNCTIONING AT ALL; IS ANYONE LISTENING TO THIS. AND CAN WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. So what are the alternate forms of medication to deal with Schizophrenia?
This and much more as we explore and dig deeper into this misnomer and very little understood, mental illness in the EP 1 of THE SOS SHOW.
Here are few take aways from the episode:
1) the basis of Schitzhophernia-is it DNA or something else
2) medications for schizophrenia
3) psychotherapy
4) alternative medication
5) building a strong community to support

The discussion on MENTAL HEALTH has been a taboo in most of the societies. With the WHO estimating a figure of 300 million people affected with depression, 60 million with bipolar, and 23 million with schizophrenia- we are just getting started in defining MENTAL HEALTH; We still classify mental health as MADNESS.
In our podcast- THE SOS SHOW- we are going to a demystify a lot of beliefs around mental health- We are going to speak to the fighters, the innovators, the fearless ones and more, about what MENTAL HEALTH means to them, how can we redefine the already defined- WHAT MENTAL HEALTH REALLY IS and how can we break all the taboos created around it; Also, how can the society, the medical and the government infrastructure be smoothened to bring an immediate help to someone needed, without being embarrassed about it, without be worried about it even in the middle of the night; Also how do we eradicate the indifference related to mental health in the minds of the people.
THE SOS SHOW intends to open up the discussion on mental health and bring about a real change and A LEAP in our cultural ecosystem with regards to MENTAL HEALTH.
