There were over 5000 "plans" people sent in for the 9-11 Memorial in New York City. They came from over 60 countries and 49 states. Although everyone thought their plan was perfect, some were downright strange. Sgt Joe Friday, better know as Jack Webb was credited with the following phrase, "Just the Facts Ma'am. As we look closer, the real phrase was, "All I want are the facts man," the phrase "just the facts" came from a parody done about Dragnet called St George and the Dragonet, but Webb was credited with it after a few years. Somebody told me that I was acting like a child. I begin to ask myself if that was true. Do I have things in my life that would represent how a 10 year old acts. The rate of unsubscribing of email lists that people find themselves on is only 1%. In other words, 99%of the people simply keep getting emails about things that really don't relate to their lives anymore and just clutter up their inbox. Often we do the same thing with our lives. The popularity of boxing over the past 100 years has been responsible for many phrases that have come out of the boxing word to become regular words in our English vocabulary. In 1963 Edward Lorenz came up with an idea that would later be labeled, The Butterfly Effect. In essence, he posed the question can something small ever cause something greater to happen. In other words, can the flapping of a butterfly's wing cause a tornado in Texas. At times, we all have relationships that are fractured and there is a huge cavern between us and the people that we care about. It is at that moment that we MUST begin to build a bridge. In the 1950's, America was a powerhouse when it came to developing rockets. Some of the early "Rocket Scientist" were actually from Germany. The phrase was used by JFK in the 1960's and it made it's way to the game of football in 1980's. It means that something is not as difficult as we think. I found out today that all of the "junk" that I have been throwing away is being "renewed" and making a comeback. Everything from Polaroid Instant Cameras to Vinyl Records. Cheerleading’s roots are closely tied to American football’s. The first intercollegiate game was played in 1869, between Princeton University and Rutgers University in New Jersey, and by the 1880s, Princeton had formed an all-male pep club. A graduate of Princeton, Thomas Peebles, took the Princeton cheers to the University of Minnesota, where football and fight songs were becoming very popular. The longest speech in the United Nations was a 7 hour speech by the India Finance Minister. Sometimes we think the longer the speech the better, but Jesus shows us that 2 words, 9 letters can be full of importance. Let's look at those 2 words today on Chewing the Frat.
On 1977 Kansas put out an album with the title cut, "Point of No Return." This was such a powerful and popular song that they had over 2,000,000 plays of the song in 2013. The song talks about sailors being fully committed to the journey and moving past a point of no return. God calls us to move past a spiritual point of no return. One of the most "prideful" people in entertainment was Alfred Hitchcock. I was so surprised. Others on this list included Orson Wells, and Al Jolson. The longest running construction projects in history is Stonehenge, Great Wall of China, and Petra. Stonehenge and the Great Wall took 2000 years to build and Petra over 850. Talk about a long drawn out process. I love Oxymorons. Those are two words that are put together and don't go together. Most are the opposite of each other. Some of my favorites were coined by Comedian George Carlin. He would talk about Jumbo Shrimp and Hot Water Heaters. He would say hot water does not need to be heated. You must want a cold water heater or a hot water cooler. We all have bad habits. Some have more than others but we all have them. As men we seem to have bad habits but we don't want to admit them because we fail over and over again to break them. The Bible has something to say about breaking bad habits, so lets talk about them here on Chewing the Frat.
The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was launched in 1958 and had over 700 trips on the Great Lakes. The Captain was going to retire and they were on the last trip of the season. On November 9, 1975, the ship along with the S.S. Arthur Anderson went through a huge storm. On the afternoon of the 10th of November, the Captain radioed to the Anderson that they were holding their own. At around 7:00 that evening, the ship and every man on board perished. They did not know that November 10 would be there last day. The Bible reminds us of the preciousnes of life and with that in mind, we see three ways we need to live. The great Harry Houdini was known as one of the greatest escape artists in history. From the Chinese Water Torture, to the Straightjacket trick he performed while hanging upside down, his displays showed great feats of escaping from things that bound him. Today we look at the words of Jesus to Lazarus who had come out of the grave alive, but was still bound by things of the past. Jesus said, "Loose him and let him go." Eddie Hall set the world's deadlift record by lifting 1102 pounds. It was such a weight on his physical body that he had a blood vessel burst in his head. He said the pain was "surreal" in his body. In life we as men often have burdens that are not physical but yet can be overwhelming. Jesus had something specific to say about burdens. Let's talk about handling burdens on Chewing the Frat.
One day a customer sent back his potatoes so many times that the chef cut them ultra thin and then fried them to a crisp, and then sent them back out. To the chef's surprise, the customer loved them, thus the Potato Chip was born. Often in our lives, things may appear bad, but may actually turn out to be incredible. The modern GPS system has over 31 satellites involved in its network. It became available for widespread public use the the doing of Korean Airlines flight 007 which killed 267 people. GPS technology is no so far advanced that it is being used in shoes for Alzheimer Patients. Not only is a physical GPS needed by a spiritual GPS is also needed.
