April 16, 2023: “The Resurrected Life: Community, Friendship and the Work of the Holy Spirit” Week 1Theme: The tree of the knowledge of good and evilScripture: Acts 2:46-47 and Genesis 3:8-13Notes: We were created to live in community with one another and with God. In Acts 2, we hear the story of people becoming Christians. What followed for those who became Christians? They did not go their separate ways. They were gathered together by the Holy Spirit into a community, and it is within Christian Community that the resurrected life is lived. We are created for community. We can see this truth lived out in the Garden of Eden until Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Immediately, community was broken. What followed was like a tree that grew quickly. The roots of the tree were idolatry. The trunk of the tree was pride. Limbs shot off the trunk that include hyper-individualism, fear of the other and fear of rejection (fear can be broken down into rational, primal, and irrational fear). Christian life is different from this—a different tree so to speak.

Pastor David’s devotional for September 21, 2022 I Corinthians 12:4-7
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. Within the church there are several foundational doctrines. One doctrine is “The Ministry of all Believers.” The doctrine is just what it sounds—every Christian, regardless of age or station in life, is called to serve in the ministry of the gospel. Thinking back upon your life, is there a favorite ministry you have engaged in? If so, what was the ministry and why is it a favorite? When it comes to the Ministry of all Believers, it is important to remember that ministry is not just something that happens at the church! Most ministries happen away from the church, in places of work, in neighborhoods, on the golf course or bowling alley, among family members—wherever it is that we are spending time with other people—because ministry has to do with how we live our lives day in and day out. As you go about this day, think about the opportunities that come your way to do something that is helpful and blesses another person’s life. Ministry! Sometimes as we go about living our lives, God nudges us to do something very specific. Have you experienced God nudging you to do something or say something? If so, what was it, and how did acting upon God’s nudge impact a person’s life? Did it have any impact on your life? I remember years ago when I was a new pastor, an opportunity arose for me to become involved in youth ministry. I had served as a youth director at several churches prior to becoming a pastor—so I had been there and done that! But the church I served was in a time of transition between youth leaders, and a need arose as did a nudge from God. At first, I was able to ignore the nudge. After all, I was already busy, and I didn’t need more to do. But for the next couple of weeks, the nudge kept coming to the point that it seemed like everywhere I went there was a reminder—you need to do this! Making a long story short, I gave in and took over leading the youth. The youth program grew as did the youth who were in the program, and I was greatly blessed by the experience of being with the kids. My involvement only lasted a year before God’s nudge lead me to do something else, but that year was a great blessing and I loved every minute of it. Of course, nudges from God don’t happen every day. As a result, sometimes it can be difficult to know God’s calling, and how best to serve God. In my sermon on Sunday, I suggested four questions that can be helpful in discerning one’s calling and opportunities to make a difference in the world. The first question is “what are you spiritual gifts?” By Spiritual Gifts, I mean talents and abilities that can be used for the common good (I Corinthians 12:7). We all have gifts and recognizing our gifts can help point a direction for ways we can serve. What are your gifts?
The second question has to do with God given passion. What are things you love to do? Make a list of a few of them. In my sermon, I mentioned loving to travel with Geri, spend time at our Zion property, running my chain saw, and preaching and teaching. What is on your list? Now, think about these two questions related to your list: Why do you love it? And what is the impact on others when you are doing it? The intersection between things you love to do, the gifts you have to offer, and the needs of others is a great place to look for opportunities to make a difference in this world. It may not be the only place to serve—but it is a good place, one where each one of us can make a difference in the lives of others for the common good. God bless you and I hope to see you soon! “A Beginners Guide to Kingdom Living” (The sermon on the mount and the Christian Life) Week 6 Theme: Living into the Kingdom Scripture: Matthew 7: 13-21 Notes: Jesus says the gate is narrow and the path is difficult that leads to life and few travel it. Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has been showing us baggage we need to unload to make it through the narrow gate. We need to let go of our anger and hatred, we need to let go of our judgementalism, we need to let go of storing up treasures on earth, we need to let go of worry, we need to let go of false piety. Of course, it is not easy to let go of these things—Jesus did say the path is difficult that leads to life, and few travel it. But, with the help of God all things are possible! If we were to describe this path in a few words, we might say the Golden Rule or the Great Commandment, and this is a good starting point. But of course, there is more to following Jesus. The Sermon on the Mount makes that clear. Along the path we encounter false prophets who promise that if we leave our path and follow them on theirs, our lives will be better. There are a lot of false prophets today. So, it is important to remember the Golden Rule, the Great Commandment, and Jesus words “Not everyone who cries Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but those who do the will of my Father. And that is what we have been talking about. Kingdom of God living. It is not easy, but it is good.

Theme: Judge not lest you be judged
Scripture: Matthew 7:1-5
Notes: We live in a time when judging others has become a form of entertainment. We watch families going through crisis and take some satisfaction in knowing that while we are not perfect, at least we are better than them! We would do well to remember Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount: Judge not lest you be judged. Jesus was not saying that we have no need for judges. We do, and it is important to hold people accountable for actions. He was saying “don’t be judgmental.” Don’t think of yourself as somehow better than others. Don’t hold people to a different standard than you hold yourself. Just the act of judging other people means we have a log in our eye—and it is hard to see through a log! It is important to take the log out. So how do we break the practice of judging others and in the process remove the log from our eyes? First, remember everyone has a story. Second, remember people are more than their worst moments. Third, remember that the judgments we pass say something about our lives and our brokenness and our need for the healing grace of God—which leads us to prayer.

Pastor David’s devotional for March 30, 2021 Ephesians 4:11-14a 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.14 Then we will no longer be infants Romans 8:28 28 We know that all things work together for good[a] for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Sanctification. It is a theological word that is intended to capture the ways the Holy Spirit works within us to grow us in the faith. In Ephesians chapter 4, St. Paul compared sanctification to growth from infancy to maturity. When we first become a Christian, we are a like a baby in the faith—we have much to learn and experience. Over time, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we grow up in our faith until that day when we reach maturity or what Paul calls the full stature of Christ. This growth is marked by change—the Holy Spirit changes us in many ways. Some of the ways the Holy Spirit has changed me includes growing in humility, in patience, and (rather than having to know everything) being willing to embrace the mystery of God. What are some changes you can point to in your life since becoming a Christian? And, as I have grown in my faith, I have times when I feel closer to God, and I definitely trust God more and more. How has growth in faith impacted your relationship with God? Growth in faith has also brought greater awareness of the struggles and needs of people around me, and it has made me more aware of what I can do about the need. How has growing in your faith impacted the way you involve yourself in the lives of other people? Sanctification always includes the Holy Spirit convicting us of times when we are wrong. While we might like admitting it, there are times when Christians “get it wrong.” We can have moments when we are judgmental, we can have times when we expect others to believe as we believe and behave the way we think most appropriate. As I mentioned in my devotional 2 weeks ago, for several years I was wrong when it came to my understanding of human sexuality. Thank God, the Holy Spirit worked on me and brought about change. Because of the work of the Spirit, I am more accepting and a better pastor for many members of our church. Early in my ministry the Holy Spirit convicted me concerning forgiveness. Before then, I held on to old grievances. Since then, I have learned to move quickly to forgiveness. These are just 2 examples of many I could offer from my life. How about you? Have there been times in your life when the Holy Spirit convicted you? Have there been times when you realized that you had been wrong about something or someone, and you needed to change? In Romans 8:28. St Paul tells us that all things work together for the good for those who love God and are called according to God’s purpose. This is a powerful affirmation of the power of God to use Christians like you and me, Christians who are not perfect and don’t always get everything right. Our limitations do not limit what God is able to do within us and through us. God can take our failures and mistakes and redeem them for God’s purpose, bringing good out of failures, struggles and even suffering. Have there been times in your life when you experienced God making your failures or struggles or suffering into something good and in the process blessing the life of another person? Our God is a God of redemption, redeeming every aspect of our life. This brings us back to Sanctification. The goal of sanctification is that you and I love God and love people fully and completely. By the grace of God, I believe God will accomplish this in my life and yours. God bless you! And I will see you in church.

February 13: “Aware” Mental Health and the Christian Faith, week 1 Theme: Mental health awareness and the prevalence of grief Scripture: Psalm 38:9-11, John 16:22, and I Thessalonians 4:13-14 Notes: We begin this short series of sermons offering research on mental health. 50% of young people say they are dealing with anxiety, 40% with loneliness and 39% with depression. And, with the impact of the pandemic, all of us are dealing with grief. Research also shows the importance of faith and spirituality when it comes to mental health. We will unpack a little of this research the move on to the mental health topic of the sermon-dealing with grief. Everyone is grieving now. Grief is defined as the normal and natural emotional reaction caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior. We grieve what we have lost, and we all have lost much during the pandemic. Common experiences of grief include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Grief carries with it experiences of forgetfulness. What can be done about grief? For those who are grieving, be aware of common experiences, pay attention to getting stuck in one experience for too long, talk about the loss honesty and openly, seek help of others—support groups, Stephen ministers, counselors. As a community, we help by Acknowledging how much it hurts, Accepting how long grieving takes, Acknowledging how hard it is to find companions, and adoring Jesus together in worship.

Have you ever been to a party where an unwanted guest shows up? Maybe the party was so good the police show up, threatening the party. Maybe it’s that a person no one wants to be around—the obnoxious person whose presence ruins the party. Today we are going tell you about a party with an unwanted guest. It is party time in Jerusalem, the great Passover feast! Everyone who is anyone is there. People come from across the land! And, Passover parties were not just feasts—they were a time of great expectation that one day the host of the party—the Messiah, would come. Jesus makes his way to the party. His followers know he is the long awaited one. So, as he enters Jerusalem, they shout Hosanna. This is going to be the best party of all! But, soon, the shouts of Hosanna turn into shouts of crucifixion. What happened?
We begin this sermon teaching about the triclinium and how the disciples were configured around the table. This is important, given where Jesus was seated. Being in the place of honor, the person on his right would serve Jesus, and the person on his left would be served by Jesus. The person on the opposite side, at the end was in the servant’s seat. John was on Jesus right, Judas on his left and Peter, the rock, in the servant seat. Where will you sit?

In todays sermon Rev. David Devereaux discusses how the advice Christians give others in times of need may not only not help, but be bad theology. The Book of Job is used in this sermon series to explain the point that God doesn't cause bad things to happen as Job Discovered after loosing everything we worked so hard for while being a dedicated follower of God.
Many young people today struggle with the notion that you have to be a Christian to be favored by God. They wonder why we would say that a good Buddhist, for instance, will be condemned to hell, unless he or she converts to Christianity. This is just another form of the judgmentalism that seems to keep young people away from the church. But, is it true that proponents of other faiths will be condemned by God? Isn’t salvation God’s initiative, not ours? In this sermon we will explore the 3 most common Christian answers to the question: Christian Exclusivism, Christian Inclusivism, and Christian Universalism. We will explore how we as Christians can maintain our belief that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, without judging others. Paul, in Athens, gives us a good model.

June 24 Sermon Audio: Earthly Life, Kingdom Living by Desert Spring United Methodist Church - Las Vegas
The parable of the Good Samaritan—who can argue with such a simple and truthful message? Be a neighbor to those in need. It’s pretty simple. Even “earthly life” understands this. Except, we all have our limits, don’t we? We all draw the line somewhere. Remember the story of Jonah? We all draw the line somewhere. Thank God, Jesus doesn’t. If he did, where would we be? On which side of his line? Remember, Jesus tells the story as a way of helping us understand the Great Commandment to love God and love others as ourselves. Love is not conditional. Love is sacrificial. Love is not only a feeling, it is a way of living. Love is not something we choose to turn on and off, it is a condition of the heart.
The parable of the lost sheep. Jesus told 42 parables. The parables are stories that come from everyday life, in the time of Jesus. Because it was an agrarian time, many of his parables have to do with farming and livestock—specifically sheep. Tending sheep in the environment of Judea was challenging. We will look at pictures of folks shepherding sheep in the area. Jesus tells a story of a wealthy shepherd—100 sheep was a lot back then. One wanders. We have some things in common with sheep, like “the grass is always greener.” We can nibble our way lost. Which one of you, having 100 sheep—and, one gets lost—wouldn’t leave the other 99 and go to find the one? The Religious leaders wouldn’t go after the lost. We know this by what they taught, and even more so by how they lived. People get what they deserve. Get lost—pay the price. But, Jesus is different. He focuses not just on the 99, but also on the one. He never gives up on us. It wasn’t easy being the “Good Shepherd.” It cost him his life to save us! Relentless love!
“Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.” Pay attention. That is what Jesus is saying. Pay attention! If we don’t pay attention, we will hear a story, but miss the spiritual truth of the story. And, what is that truth? Well, there is a sower—God. And, there is seed—the Word of God. And, there is soil—some ready, but most not. Hard crusty ground isn’t going to grow anything. Earthly live can make us a bit hard and crusty. But, the sower is the eternal optimist, sowing seed there none the less. Rocky ground—plants with no depth can’t stand up to the pressures of earthly life. Kingdom living requires Kingdom focus. There are plenty of weeds that grow—it’s easy to give into earthly temptations, and miss out on Kingdom living. In the end, Kingdom living isn’t about us, it’s about the sower and his plan for a harvest—a harvest that includes you and me.
