Alma 62-63

We are wrapping up the Book of Alma in this episode and the principle of UNITY is what stands out to me.

Mormon points out to us that it is the influence of the righteous who lived amongst the Nephites who enabled them to conquer their enemies and finally drive out the Lamanites.

In our lives, when contention arises and there is a difference of perspective, how can we strive to seek after righteousness?

I believe the examples of Pahoran, Captain Moroni, and the other Nephites who flocked to them for the cause of Liberty show us the power of the prinicple of Unifying or Uniting with one another.

Though anger weakens our unity with each other, what blessings does Unity bring?

In these final chapters we can see that Unifying brings stability, healing, and synergy.

What does unity require? It requires acceptance, but what does the spirit of unity enable us with? The ability to allow God to intervene on our behalf and allow His grace to heal and accomplish what we cannot do on our own.

Without the Lord's strength, the Nephites could not have done what they did on their own - they were out numbered and often found themselves weakened by the dissent of their own brethren, but the Lord's grace still enabled them to be victorious when they unified under the cause of liberty and exercised faith in Jesus Christ.

Alma 30

The antithesis of JOY is ANTICHRIST, for if JOY is found in Jesus, the removal and denial of Jesus is to remove true JOY from our lives.

Preserved in the Book of Mormon are the strategies and cons of the philosophies of an anti-Christ named Korihor. But be aware that there is not just one anti-Christ. We live in a world full of them and to learn their teachings and truly consider what we would be purchasing if we bought into their teachings is crucial in sharpening our discernment.

How important is Jesus?

He is everything.

That's why satan devotes everything he is to distracting us from the true source of our JOY.

Alma 29

Alma Chapter 29 is a continuation of the JOY chapters - I just wanted to make it a separate episode.

Alma teaches us that God grants unto us according to our desires. Do we desire salvation or do we desire destruction? It sounds obvious, yet it is the ultimate choice that we as mortals must decide between.

Join us as we discuss the importance of our desires and how, once again - focusing on Jesus, on the redemption of others and of ourselves brings true JOY.

View Details

Alma 27-29

I call these the "JOY" Chapters. In these chapters we find the true source of Joy. Lasting JOY comes not because we have finally obtained the perfect life or circumstance and not because we have finally achieved great status or accomplishment. JOY comes through Jesus Christ.

J - Jesus

O - the redemption of Others

Y - the redemption of YOU

When we focus on Jesus Christ and His characteristics, when we love others and truly desire their redemption, when we open our eyes and finally grasp that through Jesus Christ we can be saved and that everything will be ok when He is our partner - we experience JOY!

How do we make a mighty change in our lives? How do we let go of wicked traditions (or at least behaviors that aren't serving us) and adopt new ones? How do we allow "the plan of salvation to be made known unto us as well as unto future generations?"

There isn't a better group of people to study to find the answers to these questions than the Anti-Nephi-Lehis.

As you listen to this episode, please approach it with someone in mind that you desire to build more brotherhood with. Where would you like to make a change? How might this circumstance be given to you for your own good, for a miracle to take place in your life?

Alma 19-22

I'm concerned that there are too many of us who don't realize the faith in Jesus Christ that they posses and work in their daily lives. They wonder if they have faith, or how to get faith, or think that other's have more power in their faith to work miracles in their lives.

In this episode, I highlight the various acts of faith that are taken by the Lamanites that Ammon and his brother Aaron will teach. These are the beginnings of a group of people who will be known for their exceedingly great faith and commitment to Jesus Christ - the Anti-Lehi-Nephis.

I desire that you will see yourself in them.

I desire that the power of your faith will grow as you acknowledge the faith you exercise and then intentionally take ownership of these devotions to God.

Alma 18

The gospel is simple and the three pillars of eternity can bridge the gap between perceived divisions.

There is truth and though the Lamanites had passed down the tradition that "whatsoever they did was right" the truths that

1) God is the Creator of Heaven and Earth and He created man in His own image and know the thoughts and intents of His creations

2) That a Fall from God was necessary - introducing the choice between wickedness and righteousness

3) But before the world was even created, a plan for Redemption was put into play making possible the Atonement of Jesus Christ for each who choose Him.

These simple truths were the beginnings that made it possible for thousands of Lamanites to be converted.

Today we learn from the efforts of Chief Captain Zoram who, in order to save the Nephites who had been taken captive by the Lamanites, went unto Alma, a man with the Spirit of Prophecy to learn how he could rescue his fellowmen from their enemies' hands.

We too believe in prophets, seers, and revelators and after just experiencing General Conference, what specific instructions did we receive to help do the same? Are we treating their instructions as suggestions or as prophecy?

"Be it according to the will of the Lord," can be the hardest words to utter, let alone stand by, when we are feeling desperate or weak in faith.

Listen and learn about the persecutions that the believers of Alma's teachings received at the hands of the Ammonihahites and also the faith that Alma had to break the bands and crumble the prison walls around him. This power only occurred when it was the right moment and was in harmony with the Lord's will.

Do we have the strength of faith needed to rise and break the bands of our own persecutions? That is a sobering question to answer and pursue.

Alma teaches the people of Ammonihah the truth that, through Jesus Christ, all mankind will be resurrected from a state of mortality to immortality. When we teach the "WHY" of God's plan and the desire He has to rescue us from a lost and fallen state to give us immortality and eternal life, the "HOWs" make sense. This is how God parented Adam and Eve and this is how we can help our children receive understanding.

Alma 12:1-19

For the people of Ammonihah, to be of the Order of Nehor and to not believe in the resurrection, it supported their belief that they had no need to repent. They were abiding by a philosophy that fully supported the "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry for tomorrow we die" perspective. Their belief system enabled the adversary to lay his traps of lies and deceit dragging them further away from the ways of God.

When Zeezrom discovered that God knew all of his thoughts and that Alma and Amulek spoke of a resurrection with a judgment, he began to listen.

In this episode, we discuss how our thoughts, words, and works enable us either to receive more of the mysteries of God or to lose them. We learn how closely they are related to one another along with the relationships we have with ourselves, others, and God. To lie to man is to lie to God. That is what Zeezrom learned and the magnitude of that truth caused him to tremble.

For coaching services, email me at carrie@sisterscriptorians.com. From now until the end of the year, I am offering my coaching services for $200. That is 10, one on one sessions with me as we identify the thoughts that are holding you back in your relationships and help you to take steps forward towards what you truly desire. The repentance of Amulek is a glorious example of how we can change course and allow our hearts to be softened. Counsel on how to repent and change course.

Just like an angel of God appeared to Amulek, telling him to return home because he is to feed a prophet of God, we too can return to our homes and invite the prophet into them. Alma's experience with the people of Gideon was completely different than his experience with those in Zarahemla. He knew they believed, desired to repent, and had faith in the word of God. He saw their diligence and how they heeded the words he taught them. These were a people who were disciples of Jesus Christ and were in need of the tenderness the gospel provides.

And that is what Alma taught them. He spoke of the Savior and how intimately the Savior knows His children, because he suffered for their infirmities so he would know exactly how to succor them and blot out their transgressions.

Such truths about our Redeemer gives me hope of better things to come, courage to give up my fears, confidence that Jesus has my back when I walk in straight paths, and that His love can be perfectly provided for me in any given circumstance.

After the battle with the Amilicites, the Nephites humbled themselves and they grieved for the loss of their loved ones and their sustenance that was trampled down by the armies. Yet, they knew their mourning was because of their abominations and they chose to face up to their errors and be "awakened to a remembrance of their duty."

However, soon, because of their prosperity, pride grew in the church and because of it, Alma would give up the Chief Judge seat in order to spend all of his time combating pride and inequality.

How does pride show up in us? How does prosperity grow that pride? If prosperity leads to pride, why DOES God choose to bless us with abundance and how does it further His work?

Abinadi's teachings connected the disconnected and attached once again to detached. The law of Moses would not save them. Jesus Christ will! And connecting once again to the true source, to He who has the power to save us from sin and death, allowed a relationship to grow. No longer was it just a checklist of laws to keep, but a person to grow closer to, to cleave to, to become His seed.

A tender root out of dry ground. No form no comeliness. Despised and Rejected. A man of sorrows. Mosiah 13

How are the Ten Commandments crucial to our salvation? Salvation doesn't come by the law. Salvation comes through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, however, the Ten Commandments are the foundation of living the higher law that Jesus would teach His disciples. They are the bare bones of how to Love God and Love our Neighbor.

Mosiah 11-12

In this episode we see the effects that flattering words can have on a kingdom, a society and how procrastinating our day of repentance leads us to consequences heavy to be born.

However, is it possible that the Lord's consequences are for our own good? Can difficult times be opportunities to course correct and learn His ways? Is there something marvelous to be learned from the Lord's description of Himself as being a "jealous God?" These are questions to consider and reflect upon as you learn and liken these chapters to yourself.

This week we explore the history of Zeniff and his people that left the land of Zarahemla to take back the land of their inheritance from the Lamanites. Just like Zeniff, sometimes we too can be overzealous in our pursuits. These pursuits have the potential to "bite us" and changing our experience.

All is not lost! As we turn to our Lord and remember the deliverance of ourselves and our fathers, we can, "In the Strength of the Lord." still be victorious.

We have a seer for our day.

We actually have 15 men who have been called, set apart, and sustained as prophet, seers, and revelators, but this episode will only focus on the words and direction that President Russel M Nelson has given to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since April 2018.

During these times of uncertainty and chaos, I ask all Sister Scriptorians to deeply contemplate the direction and promised blessings associated with these directions that our Seer has given to us.

Has a seer blessed your life? When king Lamoni discovered that king Mosiah was a seer - someone who can know of things which are past, of things which are to come, through him shall all things be revealed, secrets things will be made manifest through, hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known – which otherwise could not be known – are made known by Him, he rejoiced exceedingly.

Mosiah 5

The people of Zarahemla knew of the surety and truth of king Benjamin's words. The Spirit of the Lord God Omnipotent had witnessed to them not only the truth, but had changed their hearts. The atoning blood of Jesus Christ had cleansed them of their wrongs and they no longer had a desire to do evil, but to do good continually.

As covenant makers and keepers, we too can have the experience that the people of Zarahemla had. We can have it at baptism, in the temple, when we partake of the sacrament, or even in the privacy of our own bedroom as we commune with God and put off the natural man.

Mosiah 4

The address of king Benjamin is a guide on how we can do mortality partnered with the matchless power of God. We learn about the way we can love God, why we should serve one another, and how we are all unprofitable servants to the Lord God Omnipotent. He is everything good and divine and it is our journey to choose Him, to value who He is and what He represents and to put off the natural man who is an enemy to God. King Benjamin teaches us how to do this.

In Mosiah 4, the people do this very thing, right then and there as they face the temple listening to their prophet king. They learn how to be obedient and put their trust in God. They beg for a remission of their sins, receive it, and then are counseled to care for all those who beg for food, clothing, and our substance. By doing so, we retain a remission of our sins.

2 Nephi 2: 1-10

Father Lehi now turns his attention to his son Jacob - his first=born in the day of his tribulation in the wilderness. What an interesting way to acknowledge one's son, yet it does give us more evidence as to how difficult these days were. But, despite the difficulties and the sorrow that Jacob suffered, none of it was in vain. In fact, quite the opposite.

This week we learn a little deeper the characteristics of God - His mercy and that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever and how these characteristics bless our lives to the degree that our afflictions can also be for our gain.

2 Nephi 1: 1-4

After Nephi had ended his teachings about the words of Isaiah, his father spoke, reminding Nephi and his brethren of the many tender mercies of the Lord in bringing them out of Jerusalem. The journey had not been easy and much sacrifice of comfort and trials of faith had been experienced, but NOW they stood in the land of promised. Father Lehi asked his family to reflect back on all the Lord had done for them, how merciful the Lord had been.

What a perfect time of year for us to do the same. To recognize that the trials we experienced, the stretching moments, and the trials of our faith may truly have been for our benefit. What tender mercies did the Lord give to you to make you mighty and deliver you. What you may have been once happy to escape from with the close of 2018 may have just been the perfect lesson to help you in your "Becoming" for 2019.

Nephi's brethren desired to know if the words of Isaiah pertained to things temporally or spiritually.

The short answer?

Both?

This week's podcast focuses on Nephi's teachings regarding the prophet Isaiah's prophecies regarding the scattering of Israel, the gathering, the marvelous work that will be of great worth, and the nurturing role the Gentiles of a mighty nation will play.

Sometimes, when we learn about the last days, we focus on the dire circumstances we envision will occur. That is exactly why we must hold onto the promise by the Lord prophet that "The righteous need not fear!"

"Let us be strong like unto Moses!" (1 Nephi 4:2). This episode will ponder upon Moses and a particular attribute of his that did make him strong. The family has finally reached the sea and the land which the Lord provided them was filled with fruit and honey. Bountiful was their respite. But now what?

After many days in Bountiful, the Lord commands Nephi to get into the mountain. It is there, in prayer, that Nephi learns that he is to build a ship. As far as we know, Nephi didn't have ship building skills, but that is okay. The way he was to build the ship would be after the manner of the Lord and not of man.

After Nephi had counseled his brothers on how to obtain answers to their questions (personal revelation) he answered their questions. Questions are a part of the process that all of God's children go through as they come to understand His gospel and deepen their faith. This is a holy process between God and His child. We believe the Bible to be the word of God, however, from Nephi's vision, we learn that many plain and precious things pertaining to the gospel of Jesus Christ, including covenants, were removed intentionally by the adversary. God's work among his children, however, will not be thwarted. God had a plan. He would manifest himself unto the remaining seed of Lehi and he would reveal many plain and precious truths. They would record them and when the timing was right, the Lord would make this record known unto the Gentiles beginning a marvelous work of restoration. We know this record as the Book of Mormon.

In this podcast we review some of the plain and precious things that Book of Mormon reveals, not only making it the perfect companion to the Bible, but securing it's role as an essential testament of Jesus Christ. For those who read and follow its teaching, the Book of Mormon empowers us by eliminating our stumbling blocks and empowering us with the power of God.

BUT the Lord's ways can not be thwarted and for those who choose him, the Lord always delivers in power, hope, and glory.

He desired for all of these things to be made known to him. As he was pondering upon these desires, the spirit of the Lord appeared and asked him, "Behold, what desirest thou?"

What desirest thou is a future focused question. It doesn't dwell on what you were or what you currently can bring to the table. It is focused on what do you want to become! Being moved by the Holy Ghost, Lehi prophesied of things to come. His words must have been spine tingling as his family sat at his feet and heard of the coming destruction of Jerusalem, of Jesus Christ coming 600 years from the time they left Jerusalem, of his life, of a prophet who would prepare a way for him, of his ministry, of his death, but then ultimately his resurrection. Lehi testified of the purpose that the Lord had for them, that they were intended to be scattered, but would eventually be gathered. Just as John the Baptist prepared the people for the Lord's coming, Lehi prepared his people in the same way.

We have a prophet today and his job is the same as prophets of old, to prepare a way for us to come unto Jesus Christ. What did the prophet last say? How has your life changed because of his words? What are you doing to prepare yourself to come unto the Lord? As we listen to our prophet today, we can be filled with the same type of drive and hope that motivated Lehi's family to keep moving forward until they reached the Promised Land.

In Chapter 9 Nephi takes a moment to let us in on an act of faith that he is currently experiencing. He was commanded to do something and he wasn't quite sure why, but he knew that it was "a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not."

We can gain strength from Nephi's example and testimony for when we are asked to obey commandments we don't fully understand or receive personal revelation to act, yet we don't understand why. We can sometimes become impatient, waiting for the Lord's "wise purpose" to be made known to us, to manifest in some magnificent way, only to become dissappointed in our lack of clarity.

Nephi's testimony of God's characteristics of "knowing all things from the beginning," that He "prepareth a way to accomplish all of his works among the children of men," and that He has "all power to fulfill all of His words" can put our fears to rest. The Lord does not work in deficits and everything will be for our good. Promise!

Book of Mormon  1 Nephi 5

It is not very often that we have an opportunity to study a woman of the scriptures, but we are given an opportunity in the Book of Mormon to know Sariah. Sariah is the wife of Lehi and the mother of the four sons that we have been studying. What was this journey like for her? What were her thoughts about leaving her home? How did she reconcile between her questions and following her husband the prophet and his dreams?

Nephi records the distress of his mother and the doubts that arose in her. Despite her feelings of grief and fear she chose faith and was able to "know of a surety" that the Lord was directing their path. We will give honor to her experience and the woman that it made her into.

What experiences may you be wading through right now that just might be your "know of a surety" moments? Let Go and Let God just like Sariah did.

Book of Mormon. 1 Nephi 3: 31-1 Nephi 4

In order to unify his brothers and to motivate them to, one more time, go and get the Brass Plates, Nephi relied on a shared experience in which they all could draw strength from. He referred to Moses and how the Lord delivered the Israelites from Pharoah's army. He reminded them that they knew this to be true and then asked, "Wherefore can ye doubt?"

Are we providing our children with "Wherefore can ye doubt" moments? Are we allowing them, recording them, remembering them, expressing gratitude for them, and celebrating them? Are we preserving them so that when our children face the "mighty Labans" in their life that they can remember the might of the Lord and ask themselves "Wherefore can ye doubt?"

1 Nephi 2: 16

What if we were to stop ranking our experiences with the spirit? What if we were to stop assigning the degree of confidence we allow ourselves to feel when we receive manifestations of the spirit? No doubt we would have confidence if it was a face to face encounter, but if it's just a thought or a feeling....well.......

I love how Nephi, in a moment of concern, turned to the Lord. He had great desire to know the mysteries of God and so he turned to him in prayer. He cried unto the Lord and proclaimed, "He did visit me." We aren't sure exactly what that means, but we know what that visitation produced. It changed Nephi and if we allow ourselves to recognize when the Lord visits us, it can change us too.

1 Nephi 2: 14-16

Father Lehi had had enough! He was tired of the murmuring, complaining, insults, and resistance of his eldest sons Laman and Lemuel. So he did what every parent at one time or another does, we lay down the law - except he did it being filled with the Holy Ghost. It confounded his sons and for the first time on their trip they stopped murmuring and complied - but only temporarily.

Listen to today's episode and discover what the difference is between directing behaviors and guiding the hearts of our children as we teach them to seek God.

If Nephi said that Laman and Lemuel murmured "because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them," (1 Nephi 2:12) doesn't that make knowing God's characteristics and attributes necessary to exercise our faith in him? To see his hand in our lives? To temper our complaining and rebellion?

While referring to Lectures on Faith, this podcast will focus on the first three characteristics - That God is the Creator and Upholder of All Things, That He is Merciful and Gracious, Slow to Anger, and Abundant in Goodness, and that He Changes Not. Hopefully, by the end of this episode you can see areas of weakness in your faith that need fortifing so that your faith can become productive. He wants us to know Him so we can understanding His dealings.

President Ezra Taft Benson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints summed up Pride as Enmity Towards God and Enmity Towards Our Fellowmen. Enmity is hostility to, hatred for, or a state of opposition. Pride began before this life here on earth and is the "Universal Sin." We all struggle with it from time to time! BUT knowing what it is can help us to minimize it and help us move towards humility. Learn how Enmity Towards God  began and discover whose side you are actually choosing when you feel hostility towards Him. 1 Nephi 2

Around 600 B.C., Jerusalem was not a place friendly to the prophets of God. How remarkable is it then that Lehi was found listening to the prophets and accepted a call from the Lord to preach repentance unto the people? When he had sufficiently delivered the Lord's message, the tender mercies of the Lord offered Lehi protection by warning him to leave Jerusalem in order to spare his life.

The Book of Mormon can be seen as an epic invitation for us to depart also - to depart from pride. We invte you to accept this invitation and begin your journey by reading President Ezra Taft Benson's 1989 General Conference Talk, "Beware of Pride."

1 Nephi 1

What is the key to Nephi's success, determination, and positivity? Lucky for us, he doesn't keep it a secret.

He knew the goodness of God! He saw it, felt it, and was blessed by it. He knew who his power source was. It was the gift giver, the one making him mighty and delivering him over and over again.

It was the Lord!

And the Lord was showing up for him, just like He does for you, by bestowing His tender mercies upon us.
