Coronaverse: Recent Episodes

The news is keeping track of this pandemic like it's some sort of scoreboard where common sense and decency are on the losing side. What we forget when we tune into media is how it affects the individuals around us. It's not all bad, it's certainly not all good, but it's not all bad either.

For the finale show I got to sit down and talk to the person who inspired me to do this whole podcasting thing in the first place. Chelsea Weber-Smith is a cool, talented, funny-ass person. Their podcast American Hysteria is honestly one of the best podcasts out there, especially if you like to learn about things that you know you should know, but get a little sad about knowing afterward. The real history of this country is super messed up, fam. I'll still be making episodes of Counter Culture Media, so look out for those. But, for now, I must say goodbye to the Coronaverse because, to be honest, I already focus too much of my energy combatting the existential dread that comes with a plague-like apocalypse. Hey friends. I'm stepping away from podcast land for a while so I can meditate and transcend reality...or at least just get my sh*t together a little bit. I will be back, but I couldn't tell you when. I can't go without getting the interviews I had ready to make into episodes out into the world. I owe the people who took the time to talk to me that at least. I'll see you down the road. I just gotta sink into my fortress of solitude for a while. Dueces. May 13th 2020. Texas.

42,403 cases of Coronavirus have been confirmed, 1,158 have died.

On March 13th, the country reported that just 40 people had died from the coronavirus, now, just two months later, the number increased to 76,617. I started this project with the idea in mind that I needed to get as many interviews with people as fast as I could to get a glimpse into a short and unique period of time. I was putting out three episodes a week there for a while because I thought, well, I better capture all of this as fast as I can because there's no way it's going to go for too long. It was meant to be a side project for my main podcast. It was meant to be for a little while. Now, as other countries who quarantined right are opening back up, ours is trying to do the same just because things don't look as bad. And... things went just about as we expected them too. We reacted too slowly, and we're reopening too quickly. I want to see my friends and family. I just moved home and I'm struggling with the fact that because our governments are so bull-headed that they're going to make things worse before they get better. And so, I keep recording. I keep collecting stories from all over the country and I probably will be for longer than I anticipated. I've been talking to friends, family, strangers, even some people that I never thoughtI'd ever get the opportunity to. Like, I'm still a little unsure if the interview with Days n Daze actually happened or if I was just delusional. I've been listening to them for a decade. They just signed onto Fat Mike from NOFX's label and their new record broke the top 100 charts. I'm going to do an interview this Monday with the person who inspired me to get into podcasting in the first place. My impostor syndrome can suck eggs. It's been really radical, and it's been teaching me a lot. For one thing, famous people are just people, and if you talk to them like that, it's just good conversation. Another thing is that... I really miss my friends. When the apocalypse started, I was in the middle of hanging out with my traveling friends, really living things up, and loving my time with them. Then, poof, it was gone. The most important thing I've learned through all of this is how much it means to talk to your friends, how easy programs like zoom make it to just... hang out. It lacks hugs, it lacks physical social cues, but it's really amazing that we live in a time like this. I sat down with my friend Annie who's living in Texas with her husband, living on a friend's property until all of this blows over. She's got a really great laugh, and listening to the audio to edit for this episode really made me smile. I'm glad to be alive in a time where, even though everything feels like it's falling to shit, we all have each other, no matter the distance. After getting all nervous and interviewing strangers for a while, it was really good to just sit down and catch up with my friend.

This is her story from the Coronaverse.

The mega-wealthy are affected in a different way than the working class, who in turn are being affected entirely differently than the poor. Artists are suffering more than accountants in most regards. Grocery store workers are heroes in their own regard. Everyone has a different level of being affected based on any number of different parts of their life. My guest today is Molly Woodstock, host of the Gender Reveal podcast, gender educator for media like NPR and The New York Times, they are a big part of the heart of Portland as well as a long-time Trans-right activist. Today they tell me a bit about how the pandemic is affecting their life and a lot about how it's affecting Trans people everywhere. This is their story from the Coronaverse.

Be sure to go check out Molly Woodstock's podcast Gender Reveal: https://www.genderpodcast.com/ You can learn a lot from news and textbooks, but hearing the individual stories of a multitude of people different experiences being Trans will really educate you even further. There's a lot of talk about how none of us could have seen this coming, which is absolute rubbish and I think we all recognize that. We had a whole defense set up for something to fight against something exactly like this that might happen for years. Then something mysteriously happened to the CDC and all the preparatory work we had in place to keep us safe if a global virus did strike. Was there another warning that foretold of this pandemic? Would be have been more prepared if we'd taken the alignment of the planets a little more seriously? My guest today is Dan Shukis lives in Breckenridge Colorado, where the sky is much clearer at night than it ever is in Chicago. He cohosts one of my favorite Podcasts about the esoteric called The Cosmic Keys, and he is an expert Astrologer. This is his story from the Coronaverse.

Be sure to go check out The Cosmic Keys at https://www.cosmickeyspodcast.com/listen their interviews are really damn good and their weekly forecast helps you stay in tune with the cosmos. You can follow them on Instagram as well to stay up to date with all their esoteric knowledge.

A lot of my focus is on artists. We live a different kind of life that most of the people who are being affected by this Pandemic, by this lock down. Some artists are busier than ever, finding time away from their busy schedule to catch up things they were putting off until they were forced to spend an extended period of time in one place. Some artists are struggling to make ends meat, hoping their main form of income opens up, or if some representatives can get us some more of that fat stimulus money. Bands like Days and Daze, a group I've been fanatically obsessed with for about a decade, sing about the love of travel, the need to get up and go, the anxiety of being stuck in the same dame city for too damn long. Now, they're finding ways to cope because, while they've lived a life praising getting the hell out of town, they're respecting the pandemic and staying put until its safe to pursue their passions again. I sat down with two of the members of Days and Daze to see what life is like staying still for once. This is their story from the Coronaverse.

If you want to watch the zoom interview, uncensored, find my YouTube channel. Just type Counter Culture Media into the search bar to find the interview with Days n Daze and a few more video interviews.

Life's different for everyone. All of this sort of came in like a wrecking ball and changed things almost overnight. A lot of what I've

been focusing on it how all of this is affecting us, the adults, in this strange time. Something we always need to consider when

observing current events is how it's affecting the kids. They are the future, after all, and they'll remember these times when they're

the adults who run everything. I sat down with my nephew, Joshua, and asked him how the pandemic has affected his life. This

is his story from the Coronaverse.

Essential workers are still getting up to go risk their lives for us while many people who are starting to receive unemployment are making more money than they ever have before. Lots of people are throwing the term hazard pay around, but it really doesn't look hopeful for a lot of the workforce. There are loads of people in this country who rely on their art to keep their bills paid. It's been difficult for a lot of folks, but that's not always the case. Some people aren't very affected by the pandemic financially, and their buying more art than ever before. I sat down and talked to Austin about how he stays busy with carpentry and home repair, how he's been taking this time quarantined to work hard and better himself at the same time. This is his story from the Coronaverse.

This pandemic has affected every single person in a different way. That's why I feel it's so important to get as many stories as I can. It's important to see, not only how it's affecting us, but in a lot of regards why it's affecting some of us more than others. It's easy to understand things like population density, or how quickly a state responded and shut down. Then there are more complicated factors like money, race, and sexuality. I'm really grateful to have met my guest this week, he's a kindred spirit and I really value the conversation we had. Vincent Jones finds himself affected by this pandemic from every angle, and his response was to start a podcast called Queerantine and Chill where he releases daily interviews with people from the LGBT community from all around the world and how this pandemic is affecting them. This is his story from the Coronaverse.

States like Georgia and Texas are announcing that it's time to reopen. These are states with major cities, Houston, Austin, Atlanta. But they're wide open spaces. The numbers aren't anything to take lightly, but in places like New York and New Jersey, the number case cases and deaths are starting to look staggering. They're small states with very dense populations. It could be that they've made testing more accessible, making the number of cases more accurate than other places in the country, but we need to consider that a lot of us are taking this pandemic a lot more lightly than those places being hit the hardest. My friend Cassandra attempted to make the long trip home back to New Jersey, only for her family to tell her to keep moving because it might be just about the most dangerous place in the world to be at the moment. This is her story from the Coronaverse.

Jobs are changing drastically is a very short amount of time. Some people are losing their jobs, unemployment is at a record high. For some businesses, the option to work from home has popped up, seemingly out of nowhere, kind of like they could have done this the whole time and just refused to do so. For some, it's very convenient, for others, especially those with disabilities, it comes as an insult that their accessibility could have been addressed ages ago. My friend Michelle is an advocate for people with disabilities. She was recently let go from her job doing so for the city she lives in, and she's got a lot of insightful things to say about it all. This is her story from the Coronaverse.

Michelle runs a page called End Audism on Facebook. Go like and follow her there so you can keep up with how America treats our fellow citizens who are deaf, especially during this uncertain time. That's https://www.facebook.com/EndAudism/

There are tons of people making jokes that they've been experts at social distancing, and avoiding crowds even before the pandemic. For some it might be true, for a lot of folks, we miss crowds. We're starting to feel the effects of feeling isolated, missing the communities that we're so used to being a part of. For a lot of bands, the inability to gather in crowds has changed not only their normal life but their livelihood. Without concerts and shows and music festivals, musicians are finding new and innovative ways to get their music out there and to unite the community they've spent years to build. I got to Zoom some hometown heroes of mine from Colorado Springs and hear how they've been keeping up with the rapidly changing times. This is Conner and Shawn from the Tejon Street Corner Thieves. This is their story from the Coronaverse.

We all agree that we can't return to the normal we had before all of this started. We all agree that what comes after this pandemic is going to be drastically different than the system we had in place before. Some of us don't know what's going to happen when all is said and done, but some have a pretty clear picture as to what the future holds. You heard right, there's a whole new podcast coming to Counter Culture Media. Join Tyrel and me as we report the news of the times, straight from the headlines of tabloids and other reputable sources. Ann is an artist in Texas. She's actually the artist that does the covers for my books. She had some shows planned in the coming months, but due to the pandemic, she finds herself at home in the country with her man and her animals. She says that she chose to be an artist in a world full of cubicles and this, of course, meant that she chose a life where she'd never get to retire. That is until all of this happened. Now, she's living the life she never thought she'd have, an unexpected and unplanned retirement, for the time being anyway.

In the Coronaverse, a lot of people are talking about how things haven't changed one bit. That's good. If you're chugging along like normal, remember to be grateful. Not everyone has that luxury. In this episode, I talk to artist Anwyn. All gatherings across the country have shut down. Being a worker for the Renaissance Festival, her life has just been canceled for the foreseeable future.
