banned from youtubeoriginal show notes from previous post on Chacata DosA tenor sax and a conga drum is what's on the menu at Joseito's Hideaway Jazz Sunday Brunch. We present some sides from sessions lead by hard blowing tenor sax jazz artists from 1954 to 1965. This mix spins some of the giants of soulful tenors who some had recorded some of their battles together in records and live dates in blowing sessions that became legend. Such as, Gene Ammons along with Sonny Stitt as well as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin who shared a group. Two of the most recorded congueros in jazz are Candido Camero & Ray Barretto who sometimes were interchangeable to the same artists, like Gene Ammons in this mix. A lot of Ray Barretto fans don't know this side of work of him and that his first real love of music was jazz. When his mom went to work at night the radio was his babysitter and it was always tuned to jazz. His inspiration was Chano Pozo who worked with Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra bridging Afro-Cuban music with jazz. He was to do some sessions with Sabu Martinez who took Chano's place in Dizzy's band after his murder. Ray had sat in with the greats on 52nd street like Candido had done before him. Even when he got to replace Mongo Santamaria in Tito Puente's Orchestra and leading his first Charanga based groups, he was still moonlighting as a jazz session player. There are other great percussionists in this mix such as Carlos "Patato" Valdes, Tommy Lopez and the great timbalero Willie Bobo playing congas. By the mid 50's these cats were starting to get work in jazz sessions by all the labels and by the early 60's it was not uncommon to see a conga player listed among the musicians. While this set focuses strictly on tenors there were many jazz musicians that utilized congueros. Art Blakey used Sabu, Ray & Candido, who another drummer Elvin Jones hired on a number of recordings, pianists Red Garland, Billy Taylor, Wynton Kelly & Randy Weston, alto saxophonists Lou Donaldson, Cannonball Adderley & Eric Dolphy, trumpeters Art Farmer & Kenny Dorham and guitarists Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery and Grant Green. This set also has some fine organists that were changing the sound of jazz. By the late 50's the organ was starting to be crept in replacing pianists and even bass players. While some critics thought it was too domineering and should stay within the r&b field, the public were digging the blues soul jazz despite the progressive trends in modern jazz. We have Jack McDuff, Johnny Patton, and Shirley Scott with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis with whom she did a lot of recordings with and also here with her husband Stanley Turrentine. The majority of this set is blues based or how one back cover notes described as "conga blues" we do include some latin tinged base pieces into the mix. We end the set with what inspired this mix, a king among tenors Sonny Rollins with the "thousand finger man" Candido in a blazing showpiece of interplay between two gifted musicians that is a virtuosity in performance. Charlie Parker Showcase 1945-1953banned from youtube It starts here with Bird, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Bud Powell and the sidemen that laid that foundation Max Roach, Curley Russell, Cozy Cole, Tommy Porter, Duke Jordan, Ray Brown, Kenny Clarke, Hank Jones, Milt Jackson, Teddy Wilson, John Lewis and others on these sides that gave us what perhaps the best jazz nuggets in the era of the beboppers. Charlie Parker who hailed from Kansas City arrived in New York City in 1939 at the age of 19. He was nicknamed Yardbird early in his career and eventually just known as Bird for the remainder of his life. Bird on alto saxophone and with trumpeter sidekick and chief co-conspirator Dizzy Gillespie became the leading figures in the new development of Jazz that was emerging out of Harlem during the mid 40's. They both had been members of all the leading big bands and now they were experimenting with new forms of improvisation within a smaller group setting but allowed more freedom. This mix starts with Charlie Parker's first sides as leader as well with Dizzy from the mid 40s. He had a very young but promising Miles Davis on trumpet after his collaborations with Dizzy. Miles were to eventually start recording under his compositions as he was the director of Bird's group. He took them into the studio along with Bird and cut some classics to tape for his first singles. Bird also was part of the Cu-Bop improvs with Latino musicians that jammed on the stages across clubs on 52nd St. With Chico O'Farrell directing the Machito Orchestra they recorded Afro Cuban Jazz in 1948 with various pieces within suites that was to focus on the alto solo voicing of Bird. He went to record with Clef/Verve an album continuing within a latin vein (South Of The Border) as well as record within a new environment of violins and cellos. They brought together the finest string musicians from various orchestras that resulted in the recordings Charlie Parker With Strings. That same year in 1949 a New York night club was named in his honor called Birdland on Broadway. Bird had battled addiction since he was a teenager after an auto accident that lead to hospitalization. The morphine addiction that developed eventually morphed into a heroin problem thru out his life. He was able to get clean when in California after being committed to a mental state hospitable. But after returning to New York City he resumed the habit. But he was able to record many recordings that are still considered masterpieces. But when he became unreliable a young Miles Davis managed the group until he was no longer able to be counted on especially after the death of his daughter to cystic fibrosis. Bird died in 1955 after a heart attack while suffering from pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer. Bird's sides with Dial, Savoy and Verve records will be always testament to his innovations in jazz such as original melodies over existing jazz standards and his revolutionary fast virtuoso solos of rapid chord changes and advanced harmonies. After his passing Bird Lives was scrawled on many walls and so his art continues to enrich us. Chacata Dos spins some vinyl sides of Congolese musician and vocalist Ray Lema’s albums thru the 80s.
In 1974 after traveling through the country of Zaire (as it was known before the war) as an ethnomusicologist he became the musical director of the National Ballet of Zaire. By the mid 70s he was playing guitar in the thriving scene of soukous in Kinshasa with Tabu Ley Rochereau and Franco. In 1978 his band Ya Tupas won the French Maracas d’Or award. He got invited by a production outfit to the United States. He learned studio recording techniques and recorded a mini lp. He began recording for Celluloid Records and after a stint in Belgium he moved to Paris. His greatly received Medicine album was released by Mango records. Since then he has become internationally known and worked in various international collaborations. Based in France he continues to record defying styles, in this mix we explore his experimental fusion of Congolese music with various contemporary styles of the time. Ray was ahead of the curve and before most in the world music category. We present this innovative musician and hope you enjoy his music as well.
