Jimmy Kipple Sound
another gloomy January weekend brightened by faffing with the sounds of ice cubes; ten, this year, 'cause, i mean, how could i not?
i re-listened to previous years submissions, partially to get my head in the game somewhat, partly to try and find aspects i hadn't concentrated on in the sound source. I've been guilty of using ancillary sounds a lot in the past i think - the clunk of the ice hitting the glass or the glass hitting the counter; the tear of the cube being taken from the tray - and figured i ought to be a little more circumspect this year, so made a point of only selecting the clinks and rattles of the cubes suspended in the drink [water] for this year.
I cut 30, small, percussive sections of clinking & set them away in a pattern in FruityLoops, a sort of gritty pulse punctuated with some lightly distorted samples and some pitched up or down a little. I mixed in a little assertive chatter made in Leafcutter John's Forestry and then made a couple of versions - one pitched down dramatically and one reversed and one as it was which i then chopped into something like a structure. I then made two copies of that file, played one forward, the other back & applied differing filters to both to try and bring out the... jittery cubist xylophone shambles of the whole thing.

so yeah, as ever, i scrolled through this stuff, this list, checked a few memory cards & sticks lying about. Choices are usually based on whether i can even vaugely remember what the file is, coupled with any immediate delight or attraction to the file name.

i deeply enjoyed playing with Daniel Díaz' sample pack; i figured to zoom in, splice brutally but neatly in order to transform them but keep them recognisible - there's occasion distortion and a little compression but fundamentally this is made up of a number of layers of the sounds looped and granulated and looped an granulated.

Something cobbled together in late 2020, early 2021; stuck inside, avoiding mutant strains & trying not to doomscroll.
A sort of gloomy patchwork of sounds assembled from recordings made in furtive journeys to work, cold quiet days around the flat and files found on SD cards gathering dust in the front room...
Moody but hopefully not unpleasant, brooding without being dour; some kind of banal psychedelia? There's at least one drone, a number of fumbles, rain & traffic etc., tannoy annoucements, birdsong, machines in the hallway & a cough on the radio.

I played 2hearts V3 Heavy.wav back over a Bluetooth® speaker in a three storey stairwell at work on Friday evening; work, you're going to probably be unsuprised to hear, is pretty quiet. It's a stairwell i'm quite enamoured of - when the heating's on it has a real Lynchian hiss to it - but at the moment it's almost comically unevenftul. You can hear my boots creak at one point, i'm sure, probably concerned that somebody from security was going to come by bewildered by the racket in the almost empty building.
I'm a lousy technician so the recording peaks about half-way through.

Six minutes or so of motorway noise, recorded near work on Friday morning / shortwave radio recordings made in the early hours of Saturday morning / a number of recordings of rain in my backyard, in town, at work, made since Christmas...

i've tried to be Cageian, in that i've not really treated any of the sound sources, beyond fading them & placing them, a little bit of EQ * but * i've been particularly uncageian in that my choices were never really dispassionate - i rather vainly tried to arrange them * pleasingly *; chance was involved but wasn't always adhered to... perhaps it's self evident - but i kind of love all these sounds. even the traffic, as oppressive as it can feel sometimes , has a beutiful gauzy whoosh to it...
they're all three flows, these types of sounds, it seems to me. Yeah, they've a * start * & an * end* but their defining characteristics are more about a certain fairly relentless streaming, no? even if they flicker and lurch at the edges...
& it's this relentlessness that is my excuse for this piece going so long - i wanted the them to weave, intermingle. Pretty cheaply, i guess, i made a feature of the more percussive bursts of radio static (most, by no means all caused by my shifting between bands) but i was more interested in the way they keep going, flowing, all three somehow intense and meandering...

i took this weeks project as an impetus to just cut and paste something together, didn't let the "musical" side put me off, just revelled in the excuse to splice and juxtapose the contents of my recorder - some sounds recorded intentionally for this project, most just what was there; fragments snatched over the past three months or so.

... some pink noise, an aubergine being chargrilled, nextdoor's bins, a ventilation system, a brief hydrophone recording, a waterfall, a self-service check-out, various birds, some metal stairs, traffic, rain, ice, snow, various paperbags, a train station tannoy, a malfunctioning videocall, a dehumidifier, gulls, small pieces of plastic, wind, demolition work...

it's my age and inclination, i think, but i am deeply enamoured with collage and assemblage aesthetics; the way the world necessarily leaks in to even the most perverse and hermetic project; the way you can sort of synthesise the sheer abundance of the world; a nest of implications and connections; the way things become strange when they're oblided to be in overlap or proximity.

i used no effects on the final piece beyond a little panning at times, a little EQ-ing; some of the files and chopped into the thing had been processed, but for the most part - as the relentless bumps of mic-handling shoud indicate, the component sounds are essentially unprocessed.

There's more hisses, flickers and drones; more birdsong, more traffic, more clicks, rattles and pulses... maybes everything's packed a little denser, maybe everything is a little more cohesive? You probably don't need it, but hopefully it pleases, maybes even soothes a little? credits releases February 18, 2021

It is, as they say, what it is - if you've heard any jks up until this point, i can't imagine there's much to surprise you here. There's more hisses, flickers and drones; more birdsong, more traffic, more clicks, rattles and pulses... maybes everything's packed a little denser, maybe everything is a little more cohesive? Another January evening, another recording of ice rattling in glasses [i made Al a Gin & Tonic this year, v. pro social].
From the second year on, i've been trying to make these in some sort of conversation with each other, even as i try to make a point of heightening their differences; last year's was an extended, highly processed drone so this this years should be cleaner, more percussive...
with that in mind, i chopped small sections out of the recording of the ice cubes [& bevarage] and set them to rattle away in a more or less randomised pattern at 108bpm. I tried to chip away at it, make sure ithad some sort of swing but it wasn't obviously repetative, you know? Once i had a framework i liked, I processed it further in audiomulch - making a couple grittier/degraded versions and putting it through a ludicrous disteneded granualtion thing i've been working with for something else.
With four versions rendered i then set about chopping them about, making them kind of fit together as an inconsistently consistent ~beat. & here we are.

it's been drizzly here so i basically spent a bunch of time when i wasn't cooking or revisiting movies that somehow simultaneously vex and impress, cultivating flickers, rattles, and drones out of Tobias's field recordings.
I went long 'cause [a] there was a lot of stuff to play with and [b] something about texture invites duration, in my head; like i feel you've got to spend time with the thing to know its texture... i can't decide how wrong-headed this is; overly literal? or maybe fallaciously abstract? i really dunno, but it's how i get to thinking, fwiw
so yeah,i made selections from most of the recordings - i used a couple more or less fully - and tweaked some granular delays to extrude pieces of them that walked the tightrope between recognisible and transformed... i collaged thse together as i went along, initially planning on coming in under 5 minutes, slowly accruing enough sections that pleased me until i was over twice that length... i imagine the piece as slowly displaying through a number of panels/fields; for every abrupt shift there's a long segue...

Growing up on near the coast, i have long been captivated by bits of sea glass - they hold some weird, ambiguous, place in my heart - and seem a productive phenomena to think about time with; once useful things carelessly abandoned to the elements, once sharp things rendered smooth, once entirely fabricated things approximating the natural once again. And the colours! Frosty whites, evocative blues and turquoises, greens both pale and deep, browns suggesting booze, coincidentally suggesting seaweed... would that all our waste could be rendered so innocuous and casually beautiful...
so, yeah, i chose to work with three pieces of sea glass; not technically stones i guess? but, the way i figure it, the sand that made the glass was once rock, and these pieces, sea and sand-worn are, if not rocks, then, uh, rock adjacent? & they have all been collected from the coast of North East England...
i had intended to make something smoother, more gauze-y - i guess i may yet, as these are pleasing samples to my ears - but i ended up rather liking the the scrape and chip of the ~eight minutes i recorded fiddling about with the three most appealing pieces near the top of the jar i keep these things in on my windowsill. There's a varying amount of granular delay at play here - a quintessential smoothing/eroding effect to my mind - but that aside there's no real effects added bar some eq-ing and compression; most everything else is cut & splice; where it gets weird - that strange digi-brittle & rumble - is just me playing games with playback speed in the main - micro universes extruded from dragging things out and out again. I felt justified in using rain recorded yesterday morning, 'cause [a] i reallly like rain & [b] it's a way of including the water than formed these odd pieces of glass in the first place... heading to the beach didn't appeal yesterday - it was raining - & anyway, waves and sea seemed a little too on the nose, i figured...

so many pleasing sample sets from last week to play with - i was/we are a little spoilt for choice. I ended up taking a lot of sounds from @breannajohnston's comprehensive shards of domesticity [https://soundcloud.com/breannajohnston/isolation-sample-kit-disquiet-0433-kit-bits] , a few of samarobryn 's kitchen sounds [https://samarobryn.bandcamp.com/] - especially feeling the gas ignition - and one of @sam-knot-poet's frogs https://soundcloud.com/sam-knot-poet/frogs-disquiet0433. & i included a few of mine, cause, y'know they were kind of lying around & i wanted to play with them; self-indulgent? Yeah, most likely.
There's minimal effects - a little distortion, some EQing, a little delay on on the Astralgus tincture & a little reverb on a few things. It's probably not music but approximates a groove - if something so cluttered and distracted can be said to constitute a groove; i tried to carve away bits that felt a bit too much, build spaces and gaps to let the thing approximate breathing...

I do collect sounds and textures - timbre is the word i probably should use but never quite have the bottle to without qualifying it with doubts and word salad - and i faff with them, splice them, process them. try to arrange them in pleasing sequences; sequences that please me, at least.
How much use such things might be during these strange, agitated, vexing, worrying, curiously dilated times, i really don't know. I find it helpful to make them, i think - they're a kind of distraction, a more-or-less spurious focus for my attention. Would they cover my social obligations or rent when retreating to the Florentine countryside? My guess is no, not really.

Some have been treated heavily with filters and effects, transformed into something like an abstraction; some are presented as is. Whilst upstairs have been symptomatic - untested - for over a week, we're all well, so far; i hope you & yours are too.

I can't think in narratives very well - like, i think i can follow them, but i am easily distracted - preoccupied with shards and details and incidents rather then * stories * as such. The moment not the arc. I suppose any sequence is a narrative, but, equally, we all know a narrative is not necessarily a story, right?
I do collect sounds and textures - timbre is the word i probably should use but never quite have the bottle to without qualifying it with doubts and word salad - and i faff with them, splice them, process them. try to arrange them in pleasing sequences; sequences that please me, at least.
How much use such things might be during these strange, agitated, vexing, worrying, curiously dilated times, i really don't know. I find it helpful to make them, i think - they're a kind of distraction, a more-or-less spurious focus for my attention. Would they cover my social obligations or rent when retreating to the Florentine countryside? My guess is no, not really.

got #53 through the random number generator & was quite glad to get https://soundcloud.com/name-constant/solitary-ensembles-x3-melondruiechaonautncdisquiet0431; a brooding, rich, damp little piece - to my ears ideal for soundtracking the discovery a secret in a horror film.
I initially intended to make something more or less like i always do - a distended collage of elements and gritty little sounds, lathered in hiss and lurches * b u t * somehow i got hung up on a small loop of kick & snare that i could pitch up [and down] into a [to my ears] not unappealing lope…
So yeah, i sort of shoehorned the more delicate work of @melondruie, @Chaonaut & @name-constant into a garbled and tangled beat work-out with resolutely extraneous found sound edges. The only audio i provided was the snatch of birdsong, everything else is a snippet extracted from the three stems more-or-less egregiously repurposed.
A good way to spend a bank holiday afternoon i think. Cheers @disquiet, as always & thanks again to @melondruie, @Chaonaut & @name-constant
I took the opportunity to listen back to my previous submissions - they have been in something like conversation i think; i have tried to make each new one a kind of commentary on the previous years… After listening to last year’s reletively un-filtered, though aggressively edited piece, i got to thinking that i should make something totally anonymised/transformed, ideally unrecognisible. I started in a similar place and made a thing i like quite a lot - a spliced, chaotic, busy thing. I then took tiny sections of that and put 'em through multiple granular delays, trying to keep the sound * clean * - unfiltered/effected, kept at actual pitch - even as it’s blurred, abstracted. I then layered these sections up into this protracted drone thing; i kind of fear the intermediate steps are * better *, but, well, it’s nine o’clock on Monday night & i’ve got a deadline to hit, y’know?
Thanks Marc - these projects have been a delight these past nine years. ^______^

I always appreciate this perennial prompt to [more-or-less] arbitrarily go back through my 2019 folder, make some sort short, strange, scrap-book of the sounds i've recorded, rendered, left to approximate whatever the equivalent of dust might conceivably be for such tenuous but undeniably * real * objects...
All selections were made arbitrarily; i was more likely to audition a sound if i couldn't quite remember it & i was more likely to use it if it offered a definite contrast to the sound used for the section before, if you see what i mean.

I’ve spent quite a few hours just playing with it this weekend - to the point where i was convincing myself not submit anything, that the play was the thing as it were, but then i remembered that the Junto is at least in part about the un-resolved and contingent, not necessarily about the final or complete…
i tried a few angles and i’ve made something else which i liked a lot but felt a little too similar to other things i’ve been doing lately - self-consciously abrupt chops and sequences, minimal signal processing &c &c - so i figured i should work against that somewhat.
Which in the end amounted to quite a lot of granular delay with a little phase and ring modulation at times. This piece is essentially 15s sections of an earlier iteration each dragged out for a minute and sequenced to as to fade in/out over thirty seconds (there’s an additional untreated copy of 10 Street crossing and railway in there too, y’know for * t e x t u r e *)

i mean this - “rauschen” is noise in the sense of white noise, waterfall noise, background noise, static, wind in trees, rain, etc. The blurred, diffuse, continuous kind of noise, not short individual non-tonal sounds. - is almost exactly my shit. Line hum, shortwave radio, rustle [etymologically related to 'rauschen'?], hiss and fizz. All the good things. & that's before Marc even gets around to invoking Robert Rauschenberg, somebody whose work has captivated me since i was an arty little brat in high school. His works density and elegance, the strange utopian gleanings in the collage work,the comfort with mess and scrabble; the ability to find strange trash-inflected grace in the available shambles...
So yeah, for good or ill, this project appealed d e e p l y and i have hours and hours of recordings to chop and blend, overlay, crash, paste. So yeah, there's not much method beyond digging through my memory cards looking for the suitable muted crackles, rumbles and clicks. There's a lot of rain here - it's been wet & i have this vague fantasy of starting a podcast of rain recordings - but also vending machines, basement ventilation outlets, pumpkin seeds (yeah, i know, always with the pumpkin seeds), a waterfall, freshly recorded radio static and wear rumble. I made a point of minimising interventions beyond chopping, layering, rearranging; one sample is slowed down but in the main the only effects applied are tweaking the eq levels on some of the recordings and some forced panning here and there.

I took some delight in working through the large number of samples from a particularly voluminous guitar and frankenstiening something small, agitated and disjointed from them. I made a point of using every sample at least once - there are some repeats - with little processing beyond layering / grafting / cropping. I've a mind to come back to the better sections of this and make something else out of them, maybe - but i was trying to discipline myself; minimal effects, no easy moves towards grain and drone...

a faintly aggressive working through each of the 12 available samples, a self-conscious attempt to make 12 different sounds that go some way to confusing the vocal and the machinic, i guess. This sort of obliterative fuss is something i'm kind of inclined to tbh; an affection for strange buzzes, non-verbal mouth sounds, the textures of * tape * and the strange alien textures that can be extruded from * normal * speech...
I'd like to side eye the idea of * this one-time artistic, non-commercial purpose *; the non-commercial's no biggie, but the one-time seems to suggest that we're not able to make our contributions available for derivative works in future [have i got that right, Marc?]. I've always understood this to be a fundamental aspect of how the Junto works as an ecology, & it's certainly a not insignificant part of its attraction to me. While i'm fussing, whilst, i get the point being made in fragment 10, the leap from a metaphor of drowning to the analogy of the imperceptibility of our environment/air seems... clumsy, right? I mean, i know i can't articulate a coherent point, but still, seems best to either stick with water or opt for something like, uh, carbon monoxide, maybe?

omg. the first weekend in January 2019; i know it was in some sense inevitable but equally, somehow, i never quite expected it - my relationship with time is… i dunno… both somehow arrested and faintly delirious, i guess. & yet in spite of - maybe beacuse of? - this i keep fiddling with sounds…
To the matter in hand: I got three glasses (an old Nutella jar, a larger tumbler sort of thing and a ahem liberated pint glass) out and filled one with water, the others with ice cubes and proceeded to record my faffing - pouring, shaking - for three and half minutes or so.
Before actually doing anything with the new sounds i - kinda self-indulgently - relistened to the previous six submissions i’ve made for this annual project; guess it’s a body of work at this point, huh? (!) Most years i’ve been trying to hold previous submissions in mind, either as inspirations or as, uh, anti-inspirations; something to respond to, anyhow. As i’ve been using so many effects in the past few years I felt i ought to make a point of using as few as possible this time; in the end beyond some compression and eq-ing i’ve used nothing. In addition, i made a point of not pitching samples up or down. Instead, i’ve simply made an awkward cut and paste abstraction, with a bias towards reasonably seamless loops interspersed with sharp and definite splices. Some of the loops are tiny, in order to create buzzes and ersatz sines, others work more conventionally, if scarcely in any sense musically. I had this temptation to keep refining, condensing this piece - to a sort of seething, over-eventful, brittle mush but also wanted it to breathe or at least stop and start, pulse and jitter… this is, i guess, a sort of compromise between those two inclinations.
A really soothing afternoon in all; clicking about in various Audacity projects, shuffling, fiddling, reviewing… gonna head off and watch Tokyo Story now, something that’s not quite not a New Year tradition 'round these parts. Thanks again, always, to Marc & peace to all Junto folks. &, it occurs to me now, thanks to Kirk, who gave me the ice cube mold i’ve been using for at least five of these projects now.

i took a slightly uneven loop [0m48.761s - 1m06.580] from Amélie.'s comparatively up-tempo evocation of the joys of over-the-counter medication [https://soundcloud.com/user-215090509/disquiet0350-high-on-dafalgan] & tried to both honour it's melody and propulsion whilst paying attention to the project's injunction to smooth &, uh, de-drama it...
So yeah, i went straight for the long reverb chains, convoluted granular delay and, y'know general methods of creating a general haze without quite lunging for the obvious slow it down & drag it out options...
Should someone choose to turn up the volume and focus on it? Well, hmm, that's the question... Hopefully i've kept some trace of the original's momentum, even if i've sort of made it one long implication out of it's spritely definition ...

I started off quite wary of this week’s junto; i have a… faintly overwrought relationship with SCARE QUOTES the glitch SCARE QUOTES i guess; a deep affection coloured by a certain… wariness? i always wonder to myself if i’m doing it right which is kinda ridiculous but exactly the sort of thought pattern i’m inclined to… maybe that in itself is a glitch in itself?
So yeah, i figured i was gonna sit this one out & i tried not to think about it but, well, it was a quiet Saturday & ended up thinking about it quite a lot and ended up, y’know, tinkering.
My main problem at first was how to make * honest * glitches, not something that was * simply * an effect but then, in the process of even gently mapping something out I [re]discovered that my aging computer is running out memory & storage space & so it was actually quite easy to make the poor think skip & buffer during playback; play a bunch of files whilst downloading a large-ish pdf & i could [let it] turn the smoothest playback into something jittery, stilted & breaking…
so yeah, with the idea in mind that a glitch is an abrupt skip or lurch intrinsic to the playback medium, I got to work mangling things & then mangling the mangled things; in the end this piece is as much about splicing as glitching i suppose but, at least in my mind the two are connected; maybe the deliberately abrupt splice is the fully intentional glitch?
so yeah, what we have here is some rain, an alarm, a faintly randomised set of percussive pre-sets, one of those tedious advert tracks recorded off of a spam Soundcloud account, some YouTube fragments, some hiss, & iterations and entanglements thereof.

i jumped at the chance to make fairly bold & kinda arbitrary excisions from Force Damages Drum Machinations [https://soundcloud.com/forcedamage/0346-drum-machinations] & auditioned the first week's kits/samples again - i was uhming and ahhing about maybe going with Yash's glorious clinky set for another week but though mixing it up more in the spirit of the brief and i kinda fell in love with MtnViewMark's [https://soundcloud.com/mtnviewmark-bits/0345-br-beat-disquiet0345].
So yeah, i made a point of arresting the rather nice unfolding of Force Damage's piece making a couple of tight loops,one played pretty much straight at the start, the other murkily processed and slowweedd ddoowwnn at used at the end; a beat was made to compliment the loop & then sort of arbitrarily take over in the middle along with my main contributions - unatteneded machines in a train station & rain (both processed & unprocessed) recorded yesterday afternoon.

i was pretty taken with the clinks & clunks of Yasha's Before They Melt [https://soundcloud.com/yasha/before-they-melt-disquiet0345], not least that they had all been named with solid abstract-syllabic names.
So, yeah, I cribbed the samples, & begin making an overly convoluted, but still resolutely metronomic set of patterns at 73bpm in my much beloved mid-noughties edition of FruityLoops (6.0 Producer edition, fwiw).
I added a generic-y & heavily filtered kick/bass sound & generic faux-808 hihat which is then pretty much buried in the mix; and various chopped 'n' squashed low-rez version to chop & tangle...
In addition, there's rain from a couple of months ago, a wavering little sinewave & bonus hiss.

It's not especially Branca-oid, but i made this subdued shriek from 30 seconds of birdsong & mic rumble that i recorded yesterday.
I looped the recording a number of times and set up the sequence to play ~10 times & then layered that recording ~ten times so there's a at least a hundred versions of the same sound at some level here. I then started dragging and massaging that recording through an interminable number of delay lines, filtering it & dragging it again until any birdsong was implicit only; the rolling rumble, still readily detectable to my ears and the waveform, is the consequence of the mic rumble.

i was pretty wary about submitting anything for this week's Junto 'cause it's another that uses words that i'm uncomfortable with - key among them "musical" & "composition" - but i had a simple idea that i wanted to hear so i got involved anyhow.

It seems to me that the key aspect of a lottery is it's arbitrariness & the disjunction between the numbers * i * pick & the numbers spat out by the organisers overly complicated &, let's be generous and assume, effectively random numbers generators.
With that in mind i generated a run of numbers on random.org and used those as a key for which files i'd extract from my handheld recorder, and how long each extract would run - eg. seven seconds of track seven, eight seconds of track eight &c

I tinkered, i played. I'd hoped to record fresh crackle but my turntable remains boxed-up & unconnected so i went scrounging around for recordings of run-out grooves; came up with one from 2012 that pleased & suggested some sort of rhythmic usage.
I scrolled the Herzes, looking for one that pleased - settled on 326 & certain divisions of same. I filtered them so they'd kind of waver, hover, around their true frequencies.
I then made to sort of have them - the crackle, the rhythm, the sine/drones - sorta argue sorta dance, sorta * exist * in something like the same spacetime; i'm enamoured of the fizz and throb...
I considered the sort of music that might be conducive as partially-heard, partially-background music for an art event but came up with little more than ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ; so hear we are.

I snaffled a loop of Carlos' track to pan right as a part of mine, reversed it & then buried it amidst degraded train station and granulated & dragged alarms. I think there's some sympathy between the two sides but Carlos is bring the purpose & weight; i'm just sort of gently squalling about.

Another January weekend, another day spent faffing with ice cubes in glasses in the kitchen; one year i should actually record a drink, shouldn't i?*
After recording a few cubes in a large tankard-style glass, I made an annoying though possibly reusable rhythm out of small sections of clink, thwock & crack. I took this track and, for conceptual continuity, placed it in a re-used Audiomulch set up from last year. I tweaked this set-up a bunch too, mind - made additional connections, added egregious amounts of delay - so as to not feel too lazy, too repetitive, i guess. I made 3 versions of the output from this set up - 1 at 1bpm, 1 at 66.5bpm & 1 at 115bpm - & sort of tried to get them to argue sympathetically; in addition there's some super lo-resolution mp3 tracks, 'cause there's something icy in that defocused texture, to my ears anyway. Finally i made the playback somewhat wayward, just to sort of... aqueous it all up, you know? It's sorta sliding...
Shouts & peace to Marc who keeps this whole thing going with admirable focus & dilligence & to all Junto-ers new & old. :)

by circumstance & inadequacy i've not contributed to any of the Bassel Khartabil dedicated Juntos until now; i'm more than a little ambivalent about turning up now for this posthumous one - i really hope it isn't somehow disrespectful. i'm sincerely saddened by his death and, fwiw, i mean well... nothing throws the intangible, ostensible, benefits of micro-cultural production into relief than somebody's untimely death right? but what else to do? * everything *, really, is ultimately inadequate in the face of cruelty and injustice and, fundamentally, mortality...
Some of the sound sources here are so literal that i'm wary to describe them; i figure they can be inferred but if * you * really want me to spell 'em out, i will.
Apologies for over-running - again, it honestly feels somewhat disrespectful - but i felt i could just about structurally justify the length.

it's another one of those Juntos where the source material is so beautiful that my interference with it has a gross ineptness to it; not that that actually stops me or anything but you know, caveats, right?
i took a small, delightful section - 18m30.991s - 19m23.719s - and mangled it - compressed it to super low resolution, put it though granular delay - then kept adding reverb before reversing before adding reverb; smearing, effectively, i guess. I had hoped to not totally drown the compression artefact-y-ness of the reuslting sounds but probably did tbh 'cause reverb's a helluva drug. My stereo field is ebullient, though maybe understated.

i was going to dedicate today's ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ to Agnès Varda but, then, it didn't really strike me as the sort of thing she'd want; not that three rough and ready recordings of waves on beaches in North East England are anything she'd have much use for either, like... but, well, i figured i'd do something & it was a nice evening for walk so, well, here we are.
just dragged a bunch of things that have been kicking around Quick Access [the most recent ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ , Margaret Rutherford on cycling, field recordings from Byker last Monday, the usual dronal mush i mess about with on a ~daily basis, a percussive bit, a tap dripping] into Audacity & made with the slice & dice; chopping a sequence together, then chopping that up, then chopping that - ended up making an eventful and oddly, to my ears, coherent clag. I'm still super-wary of calling my stuff the em-word but it is what it is, yeh.

All of goo, some recordings of the rain and hail from earlier today, some sounds of public transport infrastructure i'd recorded earlier in the week - and played them back one at a time into my Zoom recorder whilst, uh, waggling the input wire about so all its connections were intermittent, breaking the sound, right? An awkward way to make a semi-percussive mess but, equally, a pretty fun way to spend a couple of hours.

i went for 'uh' because i have a kind of faith in uncertainty & hesitation. i dragged it out a wee way (~5s ) in my bathroom & then chopped interesting segments of varying related lengths (fwiw .053, .106, .214, .428, .856, 1.712s) and had them shuffle at various [more-or-less arbitrary] volumes through different patterns (sequenced in my old copy of fruityloops {@ 122bmp}). Excuse the click-y non 0db crossing chops and starts if you will; i kind of like 'em even though i know they're not right.

a gentle but forceful yank and close of the cutlery drawer, looped and filtered elaborately - phases and grains and such and such through occasional reverbs and ~ring modulators; augmentations from gentle crypto-rhymic dragging and agitating of the contents; teaspoons, bottle-openers, skewers, etc. I like the cheap colours certain distortion suggests. I like clanks and snaps and abrupt edits.
fifth time around for the annual “Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it" Junto. Last year i was quite resistant to effects so this year i felt i was game for a few more - differing reverbs, granular delay [obv, natch], strange phasing. The ice cube is one in the shape of Pac Man, eased from the rubbery mold [hence the creaking] juggled and flung between a small tumbler that used to contain chocolate spread and a post pint glass that i, uh, liberated from a pub. The humming/droning is a tiny sample of the ice clinking looped into a certain sine-ish ness.

My intitial efforts felt to pleasant, not noisy enough; my affection for rumbles, drones &c &c, coming to the fore, right? So, whilst fumbling about through my SD card looking for raw material i came accross an extended and unintentional recording i'd made in my jacket last Thursday and figured that was a good place to start...
I hacked away at large sections of that recording looking to destabalise any rhythm - lot of walking, right - &/or intelligibility; silences were inserted, rough cuts made. I layered this up with seperate material before adding additional sources - drones i'd fabricated in Audiomulch, Mike's flat's door, popcorn eaten and dropped, the roller-shutter at the self-storage place, a more or less arbitrarily treated sinewave, and a s l o w e d earlier iteration of the final piece...

not that i actually did any sums you understand - just dragged a few things backwards and forwards through some convoluted audiomulch set-ups, looking for something that seemed to move and remain still, change and remain constant. A pulse of sorts is the result, brought up and down it makes something like sense but doesn't, on balance, suggest anything of the scale or the remorseless of the tick, of anything, of * e v e r y t h i n g *

I almost didn't contribute again this week, but it was too hard to resist something so resolutely appealing, even if my bodged and botched audio doesn't really give much of a sense of warranting placement in any given Major Motion Picture.
There's no synths as such, but recordings of a stairwell, a fridge, rain a week ago, & a nice afternoon were combined and mangled and dragged and delayed in Audacity so as to be not so incongrous were they placed within the soundtrack of more-or-less ill-advised sequel to a once-box office failure turned endlesly re-edited minor but definite classic.
Obviously i have opinions for days about the wisdom of making a sequel to Blade Runner; DM me if you need that in your life i guess.

Setup my trusty old EURORACK UB802 with cheap guitar cables from CRTL ROOM OUT L to 1, CRTL ROOM OUR R to 2 & FX SEND TO LINE IN 3/4 L & then spent hours on the floor recording squalls, buzzes and pulses to Audacity. Lord knows what Soundcloud's compression's gonna do to this; could well improve it for all i know.

Slightly cheating, as ever, i didn't make something of Murch's technique so much as put a recent thing of mine through it; mainly out of intrigue - it's such a neat little technique, right?
That said it's no doubt neater with analogue tape i reckon; my sped-slowed piece is very digibrittle; not unpleasantly so, but noticeably y'know? O to have access to high-end tape recorders of the late 1970s...
But yeah, so, this is mainly a sped up 4x - re-recorded - slowed down 4x section of BUSINESS & LAW BUILDING, layered with the original at a slightly lower volume and phased for cheap pseudopsychedelic whirl. It is, as they say, what it is: the sound of a pertend soundcheck in a fairly reverberant room.
I'm totally gonna Murch/4thworldize or at least demi-Murch other things from now on. & i should actually read his book. He has a book, right? [{Googles} yeah, he totally has, but i think i'm particularly interested in Chion's Audio-Visions.]
Always feel a fraud when these projects are about music but i made this & found it pleasing:
I Googled about, stumbled through music theory on Wikipedia; chose an appealing chord from here [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-diminished_seventh_chord] & then produced it with relevant sine waves [identified here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_key_frequencies] through individual mixer channels in Audiomulch. I then played these waves back into my front room through conventional stereo equipment, moving the recorder after two minutes of each wave.
In Audacity i mixed the recorded and re-recorded constituent notes back together - deliberately roughly - before tinkering with them in FruityLoops - fading, chopping, phasing, adding reverb &c &c &c
I'm fully prepared to learn that i have done this incorrectly.

door bell and thumping, various bank holiday work sounds -, rain, whine, hum &c, incipient middle age; dedicated to whoever i heard cleaning a bar & listening to Naught By Nature yesterday - your time.
[re-upped 03/05/16 after i went to delete a comment & managed to delete the track itself - infinite duh!]
uploaded just to upload something i guess; i've been round this and round this - partially 'cause i built it to loop but also out of vague and uninspired paralysis too...
our fridge is alarmingly quiet - it's bundled with the flat at least ten years old and scarcely a premium purchase but for all it's cracks and unergonomic fittings it works more or less silently. A says it's noisy at night but i've never noticed. So there's that.
Or at least, there's this - one of the fridges at work; industrial - uh, more accurately retail - second hand and - pleasingly to these twentieth century ears - noisy as anything.
So yeah, i record a few minutes of the fridge heard here when i should've been working [it was an evening shift on Friday, it was quiet but yeah, still, art-shirk in full effect] and spent much of the rest of the weekend listening to it, attempting to accompany it. My gut instinct would've been to just upload it as it is, 'cause seriously, what's to add? Especially if you take Marc's instructions to heart - "It’s preferable you simple add material to the field recording, but you can also use the field recording as source material" - I mean I rarely feel i augment anything so much as i tinker, interfere, muck about. [entropic, right? right.]
but yeah, i made cued up a bunch of more or less annoying sine waves [disturbing A's TV watching the other night and revealing strange resonances in the flat's construction/topography] which you can hear gradually fade in here. I rather liked the abrupt shut off & rather like the idea of making something which doesn't quite loop neatly, loop neatly.
&, bonus, now it's uploaded the version playable is compressed, obv., so adds a whole new set of unintentional artefacts to the sound, it isn't really the sound, i guess; a lesson in dabbling with popular distribution channels & high frequency sonics if ever there was one. Download the .wav if you want to hear what i think it actually sounds like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ is aimless, on-going and inherently incomplete. / as has been established, here & elsewhere / i really do like the sound of Central Station / of transport infrastructure in general tbh /
ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ is a wilfully perverse relationship with clock time & calendars. / a tiny event, recorded in Penge as i recall / copied and phased / fidget and tap /
ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ is sometimes fussily contrived, sometimes comparatively arbitrary. / a bunch of sounds from a morning in winter / overlapping but essentially unedited / i do like the feel of cities at eight in the morning, so maybe i'm an optimist?
ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ is one hundred seconds every ten days. / curious in the calm and flicker / vague impacts / airconoid hum /
ｐａｔｚｒ ｒａｄｉｏ is a consequence of various commercial platforms and services. / i mean, given the chance i'd stand about stations and platforms all day / which i guess makes me one of those guys / luckily, i have to go to work

so i'm super wary of these choreographic juntos but this thing i've been tinkering with this week seemed sort of appropriate - a looming, out-of-phase low sine wave, an awkward scrape/thump/scratch arhythm made of cutlery & polysterene . . . the processing is reletively light, but definite - a little granular delay adn reverb, a little phasing; f i l t r a t i o n of various levels. so.

five sounds that i've found pleasing over the past few weeks - the rattle, clank, tinkle of coathangers brushing past coathangers w/ workshirts, the rustle of fingers on disposable coffee cups, the crinkle and snap of medication blister packs, the dull click of my newish second-hand shortwave radio, the sound of tweezers hit on a metal bath - chopped up more or less sympathetically and sequenced at 133BPM in my trusty old version of Fruity Loops.
Everything's amplified and compressed but it's still the quiet end of things, give or take, i think.

I fell in love with all three sounds to the point where i wasn't sure i wanted to do anything to them. But, y'know, i copied & dragged 'em, persevered... I was particularly enamoured of the hydrophone recording, the ripples and pulses and flicks.
My process was piecemeal & patchwork - i make no claims on "complex signatures of intelligence" - i simply made loops of varing length tweaked and layered and faded them; some quite drastically i guess, but on the whole i made some sort of effort to keep the comparatively un-amended sounds high in the mix; for honesty's sake, maybe? Certainly because i was so taken with them... Otherwise lo-resolution MP3 murk is probably one of the defining characteristics of this clag, such as it is.
Shouts to Charles for the sounds & Marc for the opportunity.
&, fwiw, it does loop seamlessly.

i was this close to starting this junto before it was announced but bottled it, partly 'cause it's not in keeping with the spirit of the thing & i wasn't totally confident that Marc wouldn't be trickster-like, change it when we least expected...
But yeah, i made tighter but cleaner loops than i have done in previous years and processed them more lightly - there's a little eq-ing and a little phasing and some delay but basically the sounds are pretty much as recorded, just looped and faded.
The initial/final unlooped sound is me separating the two-parts of my [new, recently recieved] ice cube tray slowly.
The whole thing loops quite well if you're so inclined.

i dragged M1 into low rumbles and hisses after tinkering with it aimlessly; i chopped M2 into a faintly jittery pattern before slowing and adding reverb adding reverb and a little distortion, These tracks were mixed & mingled with more or less granular delay and a little more reverb until i made this.
I MAY TRY TO SLOW THINGS DOWN LESS IN 2016 BUT IT'S DIFFICULT TO RENOUNCE SO PLEASING AN INTERVENTION / LIFE BEGINS AT 33⅓* / RELATIVELY RESTRICTIVE CC LICENSE AS PER JUNTO INSTRUCTIONS

i was a little stuck with this one - for time, for ideas i guess - but felt a real urge to get back into the junto swing; & if it hasn't got the possibility of failing, of not working, it's not an experiment, right?
Anyhow, I made a simple, though hopefully diverting enough beat in Fruityloops, layered it with some rainfall recorded this afternoon then distorted and filtered everything until it made appealing fizzes and slurps; obviously i pitched most everything down and reversed it all too - what can i say? I Have A Problem. Anyhow, here we are; it crawls and seethes in a not uninteresting manner to my ears, still, it's safe to say that you'd be best off with Toasters beautiful original: https://soundcloud.com/toaster-1/beacon-for-marissa

i recorded a sample from the second hand on an old battery-powered clock we have kicking about in the backroom and just made a bunch of percussive patterns with it - pitching it up, pitching it down &c &c mainly in homely old copy of Fruity Loops 6.
THE QUESTION MARKS SHOULD BE CLOCK FACES
I was like this close to not uploading it as it didn't seem particularly sweet or playful but i made it playfully which i think counts for something & i can't be the only person who finds something sweet in shimmers, thumps, and rumbles, can i? & i overshot a little too; still i think this still just about meets the criteria for this week's assignment.

i took small sections from r beny's delightful https://soundcloud.com/rbeny/mt-umunhum-disquiet-0189tone-layer & Ahornberg's wonderful Digital Frippertronics https://soundcloud.com/ahornberg/digital-frippertronics & looped them. These loops were panned a little and faded up & down inconsistently. i then added a distorted rumble extracted from a month old field recording and slowed, reversed rain that i recorded Tuesday night.

for me the most salient aspects of matryoshka dolls for me are that they each contain a replica of themsleves at lower resolution [until, of course, they don't]
with that in mind i adapted [an admittedly dull] minute's field recording, making six versions, each sped up by about a sixth and rendered as lower and lower resolution mp3s; i then split each down the middle so in some [brute & ovbvious] sense each version contains each version [until it doesn't]
i'm not sure how listenable the result is but i also don't think it's unintriguing in it's own small way

i'm always spooked when i'm obliged to be melodic... this is teh result of a rather convoluted journey to a drone - a small section of Michael Raphael (aka Sepulchra)'s original recording [02m45.614 - 3m62.080] was cropped and filtered before being looped and looped and layered and reversed and phased slightly and looped and layered and reversed and looped over again a few times; i then selected a section from this longer clag of loops and layers to fade-in and out alongside a little buried granulated burble.

i made extended loops and sequences of the three samples with a view to making something that was dense and molten; i adjusted speed and pitch egregiously. I was maybe more deliberately interested in merging and smearing the samples into difficult to recognise shapes than normal but i still think they're clearly there; i didn't really work against their tendency to drone and hang. on reflection, i didn't really intend it to be so bleak-sounding either but it is what it is.
