Accidentally Intentional: Recent Episodes

Zoe Asher

Why is depth so hard to find? I'm Zoe and something you should know is that I HATE small talk. Perhaps you can relate. The Accidentally Intentional podcast is for those who are seeking to find depth and authenticity in all relationships. I call it the art of building "RELATIONAL WEALTH." (A different type of rich!)You see, at 20, I realized I didn't have any true friends...and I desperately needed to change that. So, I made it my New Years Resolution to eat a meal with someone different every single day and on my college campus, and get to know their story! It started with me creating cue cards with questions in my pocket in case heaven forbid there was silence. It was terrifyingly awkward at first, but as I kept going, something started to change. The conversations became so transformative for me that I ended up having over meals with over 250 different people on campus by the time I graduated! What started as an accident, realizing I had no friends in college, turned into an intentional practice of getting to truly know others-their heart, their soul, the real person and not just the facade. Now 10 years later, this is still the main strategy I use to build relational wealth in my life, and I'm committed to teaching you how to do the same! I turn on the mic with organic and unscripted discussions with others and invite you into these conversations that help us become a different type of "rich". New episodes every other Thursday! Ever feel like you're the one carrying every conversation?

You're asking thoughtful questions, listening well, and genuinely trying to get to know someone... but they never seem to ask you anything back.

Does that mean they don't care?

Not necessarily.

In this listener Q&A episode, I'm sharing three things to consider before assuming someone isn't interested in getting to know you. We'll talk about why some conversations become one-sided, how to create more natural reciprocity, and when it's finally time to have an honest conversation instead of silently wondering if someone even values the friendship.

If you've ever walked away from coffee feeling unseen, exhausted, or wondering, "Why am I always the one asking questions?" this episode is for you.

You've probably heard the advice: "If they don't match your energy, cut them off."

But what if that mindset is actually causing you to lose really good friendships?

In this video, I'm sharing a different perspective after spending the last 15 years studying friendship and sharing more than 500 meals with strangers. We'll talk about why friendship isn't a scoreboard, why reciprocity can quietly become transactional, and what you should be looking for instead when building meaningful relationships.

Maybe you're choosing your words carefully. Replaying conversations afterward. Walking on eggshells because you're worried they'll take something the wrong way. The harder you try to keep the peace, the more anxious you become.

In this episode, friendship coach Zoe Asher shares the mindset shift that helped her break free from years of people-pleasing, peacekeeping, and relational anxiety. If your fear of rejection has ever stopped you from reaching out, starting a conversation, or putting yourself out there… this episode is going to challenge everything you think you know.

In this episode, I break down the science behind rejection and why you’re actually not getting rejected nearly as much as you think. Using research from Stanford, insights from the Gottman Institute, and the work of friendship expert Marisa Franco, you’ll see how your brain is exaggerating the risk of rejection—and how that fear is quietly holding you back from the friendships you actually want.

Most people think being likable means being impressive. So they try harder. They perform more. They overthink every interaction.

And ironically… that’s exactly what makes people feel disconnected from them.

In this video, I’m breaking down what actually makes someone likable, and it has nothing to do with being the loudest, funniest, or most interesting person in the room.

Well this is just chilling! I’m reacting to the Wall Street Journal piece “I Loved Being Social… Then I Started Talking to a Chatbot” by Alexandra Samuel and unpacking how daily AI chats can quietly crowd out real friendships. We’ll talk about why conversations with chatbots feel easier than talking to humans, how that “comfort” can dull our listening skills, and what guardrails help us keep tech as a tool rather than a substitute for community. I share practical habits to rebuild your people-first life, plus a simple prompt you can give your AI to nudge you back toward human connection. If you want to protect your attention, deepen your friendships, and avoid the slow slide into isolation, this one’s for you.

I cannot believe we are actually here. We’ve created an AI “friend” necklace...a device that listens to your conversations all day long and claims to make you feel less lonely. In this episode, I react to the viral Friend AI Pendant, the controversial million-dollar ad campaign, and why New Yorkers are literally vandalizing the subway ads in protest. But most importantly, I explain why this kind of technology isn’t the answer to loneliness, and how it’s about to make it worse.

When I first heard Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” I expected glitter, heartbreak, and spectacle, but what I didn’t expect were the friendship themes hiding in plain sight.

In this episode, I’m breaking down the hidden emotional truths in two of her songs, “Ruin the Friendship” and “Cancelled”, and how they reveal what so many of us wrestle with as adults: fear of rejection, vulnerability, and being truly known.

Let's be real - I know how frustrating it is to struggle with constantly getting defensive and having absolutely no idea how to fix it. I've watched so many videos on this topic to help my own defensiveness...and none of them give you actual tools and scenarios that you can apply and work through! This video is different. Using hundreds of hours of therapy, research, and practice in my own life, I've condensed it down to 9 steps that actually work to help us remain calm, and not jump to defense mode every time we're triggered. It's just you and me here, working on getting better at this whole relationship thing, step by step. I've been there (and find myself back here again very often), and if I can make these changes 2 degrees at a time, so can you. Let's tackle this together.

You found this video because the thing you want most is to find happiness in your relationships, and also in your own life. And maybe that's because you are currently NOT happy. Or want to be happier. You're not alone. In fact...this is me too. Here's the good news. In this video, we are discussing the 3 key ingredients to becoming happier, and also the 4 necessary goals one needs to have in their pursuit of happiness - straight from the research and science of happiness directly! Let's go.

A lot of what was discussed in this episode is from the work and research of Dr. Arthur Brooks, the Harvard Happiness Professor who has spent decades of his life researching happiness, and also wrote the NYT Best-Selling book " From Strength To Strength" and now just recently co-authored a book with Oprah: "Build The Life You Want."

The opposite of anxiety is peace, and in today's episode with Dr. John Delony, we are talking through exactly how to build a non-anxious life and ultimately find peace, in ALL of your relationships. We're discussing the complexities of vulnerability in relationships, plus the difference between trust-building and oversharing. We're then exploring the consequences of the 'I don't want to bother people' mentality, the overuse of the term "toxic," and the importance of setting healthy boundaries. Then, we are discussing how and where to find peace-filled safe connections, and Zoe gets called out on her anxiety, and what can be done to turn the anxiety alarms down in our life.

I had a phone call with a friend a couple weeks ago that was QUITE tricky to navigate. It was tricky because this friend feels as though they walk on eggshells around this certain family member all the time,  and the family member seemingly drains all their energy (energy vampire). That friend knows that that relational dynamic isn't right, and wanted to know how to fix it! If you have found yourself here before...OR are experiencing this right now, then you'll want to listen in to this episode!

In this new "HELP!" Series, we are going to take a look at nuanced friendship issues that seem to not get much airtime in our day-to-day conversations, though this issue is prevalent enough that it deserves a discussion! Today's topic is "What to do when you feel like you have a friendship that is growing apart." (Could also be said as a "friendship that is falling apart/drifting away etc.)"

I've found myself here many times before, and want to share openly what I've learned through it, the consistent pattern that seems to arise, and what decisions I needed to make in those moments, so that we can all in turn, build relational wealth together!

Generosity...it's an awkward topic to talk about. Everyone has thoughts on it, and I've found it to be incredibly touchy for most of us. And then, to throw another wrench into things is the whole concept of tithing. In today's episode, I speak from my own experience about 3 transformative stories that led me to rethink and completely change my mind about how I saw the topic of generosity, and whether it's something I want to put into practice or not.

In this episode we discuss:
-What it means to tithe, if it is still relevant/important
-Why I've been so skeptical and resistant to the concept and idea of giving/generosity/tithing
-can people and organizations we give to be trusted?
-a crazy moment I witnessed between my brother and a homeless man
-how the book "Circle Maker" by Mark Batterson challenged me in a way I was not prepare for, and more!

This conversation got real deep, real quick. You see, my roommate and I were in the middle of a heart-to-heart, and brought to tears reflecting on our own faith journeys. At that moment, I realized that we wanted to let YOU in on this conversation too! We all need encouraged in our own faith journeys from time to time, and in this episode, Audrey and I get candid, discussing how we learned to actually grow in our faith, what we've changed our minds on with regards to Christianity, and what "living out your faith" tangibly looks like.

In this episode, we cover: misconceptions about Christianity, why obedience is actually important and not just a stupid rule, what the point of having a faith is, how we've gotten it wrong, and what we are committed to doing moving forward!

The struggle IS real. How am I supposed to understand if I’m hearing from God, or if it’s my own brain making it up and my thoughts getting in the way? I brought in the best person I know to discuss this topic of understanding how to hear from God and KNOW that it’s Him talking and not just you.

Kels Johnson is a dynamic communicator, pastor, worship leader, and just an all-around amazing human, and I'm thrilled to have him on the pod!

In this episode, we discuss how Kels hears from God frequently, and how he is able to discern whether it's just good or whether it's God, what to do if you feel like you can't hear from God at all, what could potentially happen if you don't obey when God says GO, and so much more!

To be honest...this episode was for me LOL. I am having the hardest time focusing and being disciplined lately, but maybe you're in the same boat! I invite my friend Jay Ly onto the pod and we have a conversation that goes from focus, to discipline, to leadership, to what bosses can do to help their employees focus, and much more. I think everyone will be able to relate to at least one aspect of this conversation, so we are thrilled to have you be a part of it!

The book Jay mentions mid way through the episode is called "Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance."

Give Jay a follow on Instagram @gcfinancialfreedom, and thank him for being a part of this episode! Surely I'm not the only person who has ever counted myself out due to a physical limitation I'm experiencing. Whether it's an injury, not feeling capable, needing to modify an exercise etc, we ALL let some sort of physical limitation stop us from time to time. But, what if those physical limitations can actually become a surprising strength?

I chat with my good friend and personal trainer, Deanna Dicesere about her own experience with amniotic band syndrome, living her whole life with what many perceive to be a "disability" or a physical limitation, and how that very "limit" has actually propelled her forward into becoming the fitness instructor she is today. It is an inspiring story, and one that will surely FIRE YOU UP.

It's time to stop letting physical limitations hold you back. Whether you are a new mom, an injured athlete, someone that has a physical handicap of sorts, or just hasn’t wanted to make physical health and fitness a priority lately, this episode is really for everyone, so let's dive in!

Give Deanna a big shoutout and thank her for wisdom, and for being part of this episode! You can find her on Instagram, and see where she's teaching next: @deanna_dicesere .

Have you ever watched a friend get something that you so badly wanted yourself? Worse yet, have you competed against a friend, and end up being put in the awkward position of wanting to celebrate their success and achievement, while grieving the fact that you cannot celebrate for yourself? A tricky situation indeed, and one that I was thrilled to unpack with my firsthand experience with my new friend Candace Collins (@cannace on IG) ! We literally met and became friends the day we both auditioned and competed against one another for a gig!

I think you will find this conversation intriguing, and uplifting as well, as we challenge one another to have the hard conversation, grieve AND celebrate at the same time, and never let someone else's success deter us from chasing down our own.

Go give Candace a follow on instagram @cannace , where you will find her speaking candidly about Jesus, mental health, finances, and the ups and downs of motherhood (which include insanely adorable videos and pics of her daughter Lincoln!)

70% of Americans are disengaged at work and 80% of Americans are unsatisfied with their job. Why is this? I have a sneaking suspicion lack of work-life balance is the culprit. In today's episode, inspired by John Mark Comer's Book "Ruthless Elimination of Hurry", we discuss how we have navigated work-life balance, creating margin in our lives, and my bro (who is a pro at this) is HERE to give you some action steps you can take to start creating a work-life balance TODAY.

Buy John Mark Comer's Book "Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" HERE!

John Mark Comer's 18 Ways to Force Yourself To Slow Down:
1. Drive the speed limit
2. Stay in slow lane
3. Come to a full stop at stop signs
4. Don't text and drive
5. Show up 10 minutes early for an appointment, without your phone
6. Get in the longest checkout line in the grocery store
7. Turn smartphone into a dumbphone (grayscale it)
8. Get a flip phone or ditch cell phone all together
9. Parent your phone, put it to bed before you and make it sleep in
10. Keep your phone off until after your morning quiet time
11. Set times for email
12. Set a time and a time limit for social media
13. Kill your tv
14. Single task instead of multitask
15. Walk slower
16. Take a regular day alone for silence and solitude
17. Take up journaling - “the unexamined life is not worth living”
18. Experiment with mindfulness and meditation

I also mentioned the book "Indistractable" by Nir Eyal, which can also be found on Amazon.

How exactly can we navigate a conversation about our faith with someone who vehemently disagrees, or has a very different opinion? Kind of intimidating right? Today I brought in truly one of the best, and it's my very own brother Slater! As a Christian apologist, he has literally traveled the world doing this exact thing -- having incredible conversations about Christianity/Jesus with people of different faith backgrounds (or no faith backgrounds at all). In this episode, Slater is here to give you hyper-practical ways in which you can discuss your faith with someone who doesn't agree, and have an amazing conversation as a result! These are actionable steps that you can take and use TODAY in your own life!

What is discussed in this episode:
-What is Christian Apologetics?
-Is God real?
-Is Christianity true?
-What evidence is there for God's existence?
-How can I talk about faith with someone who doesn't believe in God or agree with me?
-How can I have a conversation about faith if I don't know much about the bible?
-Bonus Q&A speed round between my mom and brother
...and much more!

We are back with PART 2! Continuing our conversation on "How to Be Content and Happy While Single," Lou and I now dive even deeper in this second part to more nuanced facets of singleness. Sit back, relax and enjoy, as Lou and I try and address every possible angle of this "singleness" conversation.

Lou Phillips is a global speaker for the RZIM ministry, and he also has been single for these past 29 years of his life, which is why he is the absolutely perfect friend to have this important conversation with!

He's a global speaker for the RZIM ministry, and he also has been single for these past 29 years of his life. I couldn't think of a better person to sit down with and discuss practical ways in which people can learn to be not only content, but joyful and happy in their "singleness"...for however long that is, whether it be temporary, or for a lifetime. My friend Lou Phillips and I get extremely candid about our experiences being single for so long, and in this episode (Part 1 of a 2 part series), we try and address every possible angle of the "singleness" conversation.

If you're married, this conversation is also for you, as we address ways in which not only married couples/dating couples can improve, but also what the church can do better to help the single people out there. HINT: It's NOT to try and set us up.

If you've ever been to, or even associated with a church before, there is a high chance you have experienced "church hurt." It's the act of being hurt by someone in a church. Why in the world would someone quit their very comfortable 6-figure salary to take a huge risk and start a company?! In this conversation, which is more of an interview style, I sit down with one of my friends Taylor Hiott, who quit his job as a computer salesman 3 years ago, to create what is now a massive consulting company, Nine University, which teaches people how to sell products on Amazon.

You may have seen him acting like a goofball with a pink towel on his head in a (now viral) video advertisement for his company, but today we pull back the curtain and see a side of Taylor that few have ever seen before. We get personal and discuss what drives him, what frustrates him most, what his dreams and goals actually entail, and the type of person he believes can achieve their own definition of "success." He has so much wisdom for those who are currently trying to pursue a dream and enter uncharted waters along the way.

I think we've all heard it before: "Hollywood is so ___ (fill in the blank with a negative phrase or connotation somehow relating to people having no soul, no moral compass etc.)" So, how then, is it possible to stay grounded in such an cut-throat environment?

In this conversation I had with Film Director and Producer Spencer Folmar, we cover a myriad of topics, such as: how he got his break into Hollywood, imposter syndrome, how coronavirus is changing the landscape of the entertainment industry and his plans to pivot, and what he believes is MOST important at the end of the day.
