In this special Pre-Recorded Podcast, we talk to Sarah Tochiki, the Music Director for both Kauai Community College and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. She is also the person who re-arranged songs from Bandito Tyler for Jazz Big Band. A few weeks ago we Recapped the Kauai Jazz Festival, but this week we pick Sarah’s Brain for how she came up with the Arrangements. As we talk about each song, Aldrine shares the background history of the Bandito Tyler album, and we learn about the Real People who inspired the Characters. Sarah explains how she accomplished the challenging task of balancing the songs original essence while also adding more to the instrumentation. Mike contributes his own perspective as a member of the band, and as the person to plant the idea of re-arranging Bandito Tyler. If you find a song “Boring”, use Chord Substitutions to spice them up. Kahai Challenges Aldrine to demonstrate a couple of ways you can change a song by “Replacing” one or two chords. Aldrine starts by adding notes to the base chord to make new Substitutions. On the next Level, Aldrine shows how you can use Relative Chords as Substitutions, and how you can combine both techniques to make a song your own. The guys also discuss how knowing some Music Theory is a good shortcut to find new Substitutions, but if you want to jump in, it can be as easy as Adding or Subtracting fingers from a Chord. FUSION HA! Last Saturday, it was announced that UU has officially been acquired by Kanilea. Kaimana from Kanilea joined us to answer what the acquisition means for Ukulele Underground. Before we get to the big topic, we also talk about some of the other announcements made during Kanilea's 2022 Showcase. In particular we discuss the new Builder's Experience and the 2022 Platinum model. After that, Kaimana reassures some of the audience's worries by explaining that UU is not going to drastically change, and that UU and Kanilea have already been working together for months. Aldrine explains why the merge happened in the first place, and Aaron uses Disney, Marvel, and Pixar as an analogy for how the new partnership works. The guys also talk about how the public forum won't change, and how any changes is for functional reasons. Now that the elephant in the room has been addressed, UU members ask Kaimana more specific ukulele questions: how much is the platinum, what about the AGXAQ strings, are GOTOH Stealth Tuners discontinued, and what is Master Grade Koa? Before we tackle the classic debate of Mics Vs Pickups, we have a big announcement for Ukulele Underground Streams. This is the last Ukulele Underground Podcast to be streamed on Thursday. The podcast will now alternate with the Aloha Friday Jams on Fridays. The guys explain why the change, and what that means for UU as a whole. The discussion of Mics vs Pickups is started when OG Member, Jim, ask what effects does Aldrine love or hate? Aldrine lists his go to effects and pedals, and what effects he uses for studio recording. We get into the main topic of the podcast by describing one of the major downsides of pickups: the dreaded thump. The team then explains the pros and cons of performing with a microphone. Aldrine recounts his early experiences with pickups, and how he does soundchecks now. It's ironic that as we give the tip to not overcomplicate your set ups, we experience Audio problems. Are there Right and Wrong ways to hold chords? It's a pretty common question that we've been asked before, but on this podcast we try to solidify where UU stands, and what we mean when we teach you the "Right" way to hold a chord. Before that, we give a quick student review, and some suggestions on Bass Tone. A member is taught an Alternative way to hold G, and asks if it's right or wrong? Aldrine tries to show the pros and cons for holding G either way. Kahai brings up that there is usually a reason why certain ways to hold chords become the standard for most players. We use the toolbelt analogy again, and remind everyone to use the right tool for the job. When another member asks if it's ok to play Em with your pinky, we go into a deeper discussion of enjoying your time learning the ukulele, and not trying to find the Secret to Instant Improvement. How do you overcome Stage Fright, and enter the Flow State? Aldrine starts off by suggesting a thought exercise to help focus during a performance. What is the Best way to Hold a Chord? The UU Team tries to answer this conundrum on this week's Live Lesson, but first, Aldrine explains what the "Bling" is hanging from his Headstock. The guys remind everyone what the Songwriting Challenge is, and encourages everyone to write something even if it isn't going to be a Masterpiece. A member is having trouble switching from Bm to Em, so Aldrine shows 4 different grips that are often overlooked when learning chords. Aaron explains how he works around this problem by using his Palm to Support the ukulele, and using the full chord shapes. Kahai brings up that every chord change is different. The same member asks why barring only two strings of the Bb chord is the norm. The Team reveals that there isn't one best way to hold a chord, and justifies why you would want to learn multiple ways to hold the same chord. When someone asks Aldrine how to do the reggae strum, Aldrine uses the analogy of a door opening to demonstrate the timing. Raking is brought up, and along with it, the guys do a deep dive into the genealogy of Guitar and Ukulele players. We're back in our new Studio for another Live Lesson Podcast. A new type of Songwriting Challenge leads the guys to come up with their own Mandela Effect. We'll see how many UUers write songs about October Skies, and how many write about October Afternoons. Before the new Challenge is made, the team helps someone who brought up the observation that uke covers seem to use more 7th chords than guitar covers. The discussion strays slightly into difficult chords and how difficulty is subjective. Aldrine offers some advice for a Student Review, but is more reflective on how much this Student improved by performing publicly. Praise is given for those who completed the last Songwriting Challenge before the guys come up with the new Challenge. Do Straps Make the Player, or does the Player Make the Straps? A student review leads the UU team to question how important is a strap, and how much support should you be getting from the strap? The guys also offer fundamental advice on how you should hold your ukulele to optimize support. This leads to a trip down memory lane when most ukuleles didn't have strap pegs, and playing an ukulele/pick up combo that was great for stage, but impossible to play without a strap. A UU member asks how many ukuleles Aldrine plays for a show, and another member asks why Aldrine wrote a song about Playing Cards. A special guest is announced for next week's podcast, and an extension is placed on the Songwriting Challenge.

Longtime friend and OG Member of the UU Community, Narciso "Seeso" Lobo joins us for this week's podcast. We start of the Live Lesson with an intro to Seeso, and an explanation of the Ukulele World Congress and the Brown County Ukulele Festival. Along the way, the gang reminisces about the online ukulele community, and take a walk down memory lane when Seeso introduced UU to Chicago. We catch up with what Seeso is currently working on, dive back to some of the original Ukulele Youtube Heavy Hitters. This Week, we have a very special guest, Kaniho Giminiz. You might have Seen or Heard Kaniho from some of the Play Alongs.
