Amanda Lamb is back to introduce the third true crime podcast from WRAL. "The Killing Month August 1978" tells the story of a family crime business run by three brothers who would stop at nothing to keep from getting caught. The Johnston brothers operated in Chester County, PA in the 1970s. When young members of the gang started talking to police, the brothers turned from theft to murder.
Amanda talks to Kathy about her personal connection to the story and why she wanted to tell it.

Under the Boylan Street Bridge in Downtown Raleigh you will find a store with only local in mind. Shauna Greenwell has owned the space for 20 years, and in that time she has been through many iterations.
Starting as a gallery and frame shop, as with most business in 2020, she had to pivot. Now you can find a coffee bar, an art gallery, a bodega with only goods from NC, and beers on tap.
Her events range from wrestling to food truck rodeos.
It's a part of old Raleigh that is holding on to everything that made the 1990's in Raleigh magical, all while showcasing today's best in art and food.

Chef Sarah Cuni is the chef and owner of Pittsboro's Cafe Root Cellar and Chapel Hill's Root Cellar Cafe. She joins us fresh off of a WIN on the Food Network's Supermarket Stakeout!
Chef Cuni left her northern roots in Connecticut to expand her love of farm to table cooking to the south. She took over Chapel Hill's Foster's Market in 2013, changing the name to Root Cellar Cafe. For Hannah Weisberg, the closing of her workshop and event space Dove & Olive Mercantile was only the beginning of her career. The workshop had just opened in 2020 but closed its doors that fall due to the pandemic. Then, Hannah knew the need for connection was more important (and challenging) than ever. She launched The Women's Social Club (WSC) to see if other women felt the same way. What began as twice-a-month meet-ups in parks and other outdoor venues around Raleigh, has evolved into a community of over 700 women with a variety of in-person event offerings in multiple cities, an online community, and more chapter locations opening across the country.

Recipes in this episode: DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON - served in wine glass 1 ounce Pernod Fill rest of glass with chilled sparkling wine (we used Dibon Cava)
BLACK WIDOW SMASH- served in tall cocktail glass or tumbler 8 fresh blackberries 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, finely diced Juice of half a fresh lemon 2 barspoons of honey 1 ½ ounces tequila 2 dashes of orange bitters Then add sparkling water to top of glass (we used ginger beer)
Put first 4 ingredients into glass, muddle together. Add a handful of ice. Then add tequila, bitters, and sparkling water (or ginger beer) to top of glass. Mix and serve.
POISON APPLE CIDER- served in mug or warm beverage container 4 cups apple cider 2 Tablespoons brown sugar 4 cloves The peel of one orange 1 star anise Nutmeg to taste 1 cup whiskey
Put all ingredients into pot, simmer on low for at least 20 minutes till flavors meld, then serve warm (serving note: can be poured into CLEAN coffee or hot beverage urn to keep it warm for serving)

Farmers and vineyard owners are already seeing the effects that climate change will have on the wine industry. Grapes that make up favorite wines like Merlot and Pinot Noir are becoming harder and harder to grow. These grapes -- which have been around for centuries -- are being threatened by our changing climate. In this episode, we talk with Preston Williams, who owns a winery and event space in Norlina, NC. He just started a winery using muscadine grapes. Preston has been farming all his life and says that climate change is one of the challenges farmers just have to be prepared for.

Two people died and 25 people were injured, including nine firefighters, after a gas explosion shook downtown Durham and destroyed buildings on April 10, 2019. Kong Lee, 61, who owned the Kaffeinate coffee shop, was one of those killed in the blast. Nearby businesses, including Saint James Seafood, experienced damage and were forced to close. After nine months, Saint James will officially reopen on Thursday, Jan. 23.
